QOTD: 13 years ago was walking through the liquor store with a girl that I really wanted to bang and as I was going to grab some Ruffino Gold label she goes- I love this so I am thinking great got to get 3 bottles now- still less than getting a hooker so what the heck- but turns out she was oogling the Carlo Rossi Paisano- Grabbed the handle on the gallon and smiled all the way to the register!

Good QOTD! About five years ago my brother and I had a private tour of Mondavi with several tastings along the way of their best stuff and ending with a fabulous lunch with four different wines. It was a beautiful day with a lot of really good wine. And sharing it with my big brother was the best!

the other day i was thinking about where in hell are the contest winners? presto!

qotd: there are so many, and not enough. i can say my most recent one. i had some friends over a few weeks ago. they like wine, like everyone, but are not really into it. so, we had 3 bottles already, a real nice swiss white wine ( we live in switzerland), a 2001 GC riesling from alsace that was getting there, then with our veal, we had a disappointing 03 savigny les beaune 1er cru. at this point, the 4 of us are a little loopy. i look at my friend delphine and say, do you want something real good? did you ever have gevrey chambertin? so i took her downstairs to the cellar and we picked out a 02 gevrey chambertin.
the moment i guess was when she still had the mediocre savigny in her glass and i gave her a whiff of my gevrey. she just said wow! it was that moment of discovery for her, and sharing for me that made it. the bottle was good. brimming with deep dark fruit, traces of dirt. it was being with friends, drinking good stuff, and laughing.

QOTD: Sitting around the kitchen table at my mother’s house catching up with my friends, three years ago. We had all been on around the world adventures and there’s nothing like seeing old friends – we were sneaking some CNDP from mom’s cellar IIRC.

Best beer moment: Drinking Arrogant Bastard IPA, Smoked Porter, and 750’s of warm La Fin du Monde north of Banff in the Yukon, camping with my friends. We were grilling veggies, without the use of tongs and it was bear season…

Love the bubbles. Love the small grower’s, which are also a value when you consider that a 1988 Dom P that goes for over $300 is probably not any better than the $100 1988 De Venoge.

QOTD: Before flying home from Paris four years ago my girlfriend and I stocked up on great cheese, cold meat, pâté, bread and wine. We smuggled it all on the plane and had an amazing meal. The wine tasted fantastic. We were very happy on a crowded flight that would have been miserable if we had to eat the airplane food and drink their wine.

QOTD: So many! Quaffing Beaujolais Nouveau as a student in France in 1983. Discovering Gewurztraminer on a balmy spring evening on holiday in Alsace in 2000. A New Zealand sauvignon blanc at a dinner with my then fiancee in the late 80s. The list goes on.

Definitely a fan of guests. I think instead of a simul-cast of mott, you should do a Mott confessional. His true feelings on the wines you make him taste, and everything else that is WLTV.

QOTD: Last night in Vienna after running around Eastern Europe with two friends from highschool. Ordered some random bottles of red wine and reminisced. Couldn’t even tell you exactly what we drank, but good times, good food, great friends, and wine . . . could you ask for much more?

Qotd: the ‘95 La Grande Dame Veuve that my wife and I popped after our wedding reception in our room after the crazy/wonderful day. It tasted amazing but at that moment..anything was bound to be incredible. Awesome show- I love the guest shows, as well as the bubbly episodes! Have fun on Conan!

QOTD: Had my girlfriend and another couple over in college and opened a bottle of 2003 Hayman & Hill pinot noir and my room instantly filled with the scent of fresh flowers. It was really incredible and all four of us could smell it. I’m usually the one calling out smells but this was so strong and so distinctive that we were all able to enjoy it together. Thanks, vino!

I think you were referring to Azuki bean, but I’ve always known them as just red beans with ice, from china and korea

Is the mouse wine happening at the NYC Diggnation show? That would be an even better reason to get there.

    Excellent show!

Why not have a mirror on the wall behind you then we can see Mott :-)

QOTD … It’s on 2 separate occasions recently, but it is the same. Local wine shop brought some wines over from BAVA and on another day Chateau Margaux.

After tasting and enjoying wines for a few years, my “pal” certainly went up a gear tasting these wines and could really enjoy them for the their complexities.

Didn’t expect you on so early, nice, I get to watch while I’m fully awake and it’s still light outside!

Matt seems a natural, good guest, relaxed and funny.

QOTD – My two most recent birthdays, where Sarah went Above & Beyond in finding wines that fitted in with exactly where I was at the time – last year wines from 1967 to match my 40th birthday, this year wines from 2 countries I didn’t have (India & Uruguay) as I continue my globe-trotting purchases.

    Good Luck on Conan!

I love bubbly, which flows into my answer of the QOTD.

Every Christmas Eve, after my two daughters go to bed and the presents are under the tree, my wife and I share a bottle of bubbly. She and the girls are the best gifts in my life.

QOTD: My favorite wine moment was with my wife – we had a 2001 Chateau de Pez with a meal. It was one of those epiphany-type moments for her where she exclaimed “This, THIS is the perfect red wine”.

Matt was a good WLTV-guest-taster – comfortable, authentic and not the least bit nervous or self-conscious on the show. Congrats on the MD! Good choice with the bubbly and a nice cross-section of bottle choices.
Gary- thanks for mentioning the Gruet tasting-room PR. No matter how good the product, wine is about people – and the Gruet folks have created for themselves a reputation of consistently providing an unpleasant, snooty, and often downright RUDE tasting experience for guests (customers!!) visiting their tasting room in Albuquerque. In this day and age of service??? There’s a LOT of good cava out there for the price (or less) of Gruet’s offerings – I like buying local and/or USA products, but those folks need to handle their customer relations WAY better. We have lots of choices and don’t have to give our business to endorse a product whose producers make us feel bad!

Favourite wine moment was having my first taste of 2000 Bordeaux with friends for my 40th birthday.

QOTD: Mine was also with a girl – my girlfriend got really stoked the first time she had the ‘05 MD Boxer. It’s definitely not everyone’s wine, but it was the first time she got really excited about a wine I bought. It was really cool to share that.

QOTD: In 1996 my husband and I went to France. We were wine drinkers but didn’t know much about the wines of the world. One day we drove into a village and we sat at a cafe reading our travel books. That’s when we realized we were somewhere incredible. We were in Gevrey-Chambertin. We had the best afternoon tasting incredible wines in people’s basements/cellars. We’ve remained huge fans of Burgundy while we continue to expand our palates.

During that same trip to France, we went to Champagne, Loire, Alsace…….and more.

Lurker coming out…. big vote for the Matt-cam, with split screen shots. Gary still gets top billing.
