Great Show Gary.
I love bubbles too but I think they are overpriced.
By the way, yes, crushed / shaved ice with sweet bean is from Korea and it’s called Pot-Bing-Soo. Pot stands for “Sweet Bean”, Bing stands for “Ice” and Soo stands for “Water”. It is really popular in Korea and Japan.

QOTD: My favorite Wine Moment is always on going. What I mean is… I could say things like, the time I went to epernay and had Champagne where it was born, or when I was in Chianti barrel tasting in a Castle, but what I think is so special about Wine is the fact that just about every time you open a bottle of Wine it’s potentionaly a Wine Moment.

Great show Gary! Thank you soooooo much for the shout out for Amy. She was so surprised! We had a very nice dinner with some good wine (the malbec I tried smelled like poo, literally, but tasted great) to celebrate her b-day. Thanks again, and great spot on Conan!

Congrats on finishing med school!

Well, I am only 19, so my story may be lacking in class and grace, but it has heaps of awesome to make up for that.
Basically it was (Canadian) Thanksgiving weekend of last year, and my friend’s dad had just had his 50th birthday the day before. A bunch of us went up to finish off the keg from the previous night’s celebrations. Unfortunately there wasn’t a whole lot left so we finished the keg with only a small buzz (most of us at least). So this one guy (the drunkest one there I might add) disappears, and comes back with a bottle of red wine, no idea what kind, from Peller Estates if I were to guess. Anyways, he’s all riled up and he’s telling us “come on guys, we gotta finish this fast” and so we get in a circle, throw our hands in the middle, let out a cheer. Then we start chugging the wine straight from the bottle in succession. In I would say under a minute the bottle was done. We ended up doing the same thing to another bottle maybe 30 minutes later.
Basically, it was a pretty epic night and started what would become pretty regular ‘wine seshes’ as we call them. This is actually what got me into wine, and by consequence, winelibrarytv, which in turn got me into wines a bit more seriously. I still partake in wine seshes obviously, but now I also drink wine outside of that environment, and from a wine glass instead of a wine bottle.

QOTD–Luckily for me, my best wine moment lasted about 3 days…

What I remember of it goes like this…Visiting family in San Diego, my wife and I left our daughter with the inlaws and flew into San Fran, rented a convertible and took off for Napa and Sonoma. Stopped for lunch at the Oakville Grocery, visited a couple of wineries nearby (Groth and Silver Oak, I think). We then took a twisting, winding road (The Oakville Grade maybe?) to our next stop, which was Landmark Vineyards. Had tour of the winery with the director marketing, sampled a little wine and checked into our room at Landmark. Had dinner at a little restaurant near the winery and went back to the winery for the night. Played Bocce Ball until it got too dark to see. The next morning we took off and hit several other wineries that I don’t remember. I remember trying to go to the tasting room at Rodney Strong, but they didn’t open until 10am. What’s wrong with a wine tasting for breakfast? I think we also hit Seghesio that morning. The we had lunch and tour (with barrel tasting) at Chateau Souvrain. After that it was off to Jordan for another tour and lodging for the evening. (If you ever look at the label, the far right windows on the 2nd floor of the winery is where we stayed. Our room had a view into the barrel room. I didn’t get much sleep that night. I kept trying to figure out how to get in there! Before retiring back at Jordan, we had dinner at the Healdsburg Charcuterie–Wow!!! The next day we headed back to Napa, visited several more tasting rooms, including Grgich and Kunde. Lunch was at the La Famiglia winery (Mondavi) on a terrace overlooking an olive grove. After a tasting at Opus One, we had a private tour at Mondavi, which included a tasting which included Tok a lon vineyard I-Block Sauvignon Blanc (Maybe fume blanc?). Anyway, we headed to the FEDEX in Napa to ship the wine home. After 3 days of amazing food and even better wine, we were really in the mood for something different…McDonalds it was!

As an amazing final note, when I returned to work on Tuesday, we hosted a wine dinner featuring Rodney Strong. He was an amazingly funny man.

Sorry it was so long, but I wrapped up just in time to turn Conan on!

Oh, and yes, it is Korean. Unless the Koreans got it from somewhere else. But I’m pretty sure it’s widely known as being Korean. I’m already starting to see it in all the restaurants over here. It’s pretty much just a summer food.

Congrats on med school!

QOTD: March 2006 I was traveling through southern Italy with some friends from architecture school and on our last night in I Sassi, Matera we decided to stay up all night to climb through the gorge at the edge of the town. Around 4:30 AM we stopped halfway down one side of the ravine and we broke out some random bottle of white wine, and laid on the rocks looking up at the shadowy silhouette of the Sassi above and a church carved out of a pinacle of rock. We stayed there in complete silence, listening to the river at the bottom of the gorge, passing around the bottle of wine. There was nothing to be said for the moment. When we decided to move on, I took the empty bottle, wrote our names and the date on it, and placed it a niche in the rock face rising above us.

I was in Germany for an Orchestra tour and one family I stayed with brought out a bottle of wine to go with dessert. I don’t even remember what it was (possibly a rarely seen stateside red Rhine?). The taste was rich, complex and paired well with chocolate. Most importantly, I was able to spend the moment with some great German people.

QOTD: It was with a girl, on her birthday. Neither of us knew anything about wine, but we had some great cheese out (I believe it was ossau-iraty, manchego, and possibly dubliner), a loaf of ciabatta, and some fruits. We had picked out two wines – mostly for their labels. ‘05 Cycles Gladiator Pinot, and ‘04 Barrel Monkeys Shiraz (McLaren Vale). We opened the pinot first, and found it soft, light, and pleasant. Sitting in the dimming light on summer evening, with the descending sun entertaining us through a window, I cared less and less about the world outside that room. When we opened the Barrel Monkeys, I was taken aback! While the pinot seemed to be one, pleasant flavor, the shiraz was deep and dark, and changed as it ran over my tongue. By now the light had become appropriately dusky, and I imagined a cool Persian night, with perfumed breezes and rustling dunes… and a campfire (I smelled smoke in the wine). We talked late into the night.

I’m curious: Have you had the ‘47 Cheval Blanc, and what was your experience? I’ve read that it is “technically” flawed, with low acidity, high residual sugar, and excessive volatile acidity, but that somehow it works transcendentally! Did it knock your socks off?

Maybe you could do a show where you simply talk about a few great wines that stand out in your memory – the circumstances, with whom you drank them. It could be the first wine-less WLTV show!

Excellent episode with the Doc! Congrats to you completing Med school, you were fun to have on the show. Can’t wait to see you Gary on Conan, but it’ll have to wait till tomorrow, it’s just too late for me having to get up at 4:45 to go to work like I usually do. Best wine moment was camping with Edie and having a Moscato D’Asti in front of the camp fire before we ever got very serious about wine. Still our favorite type of wine. Thanks for everything Gary! Oh and by the way, I see Amazon shipped 2 things to me today and I’m excited to read them

QOTD- my favorite wine experience was when I took my first trip up to the fingerlakes on my 21st birthday. I tried somewhere in the ballpark of 60 wines and eneded up with a tremendous hangover at 4pm in the afternoon!!! haha

Gary – I think that the shaved ice dessert you’re talking about is Filipino. Possibly Halo-Halo. Shaved Ice, sweet milk, beans, and sometimes ube (purple yam) ice cream.

QOTD – my favorite moment has to be when I took a two week trip to south america last summer. I was having dinner in a small restaurant in Rio de Janeiro with four of my best friends and I bought a bottle of cabernet sauvignon to go along with a plate of seafood pasta. I can’t remember the producer, but I just remember it being one of the best bottles of wine I’ve ever had.

QOTD: My best wine moments so far have been both a romantic setting and times with friends ..once while lost in Spain at night, walking along the train tracks with friends..drinking, laughing..and freaking out!!!!

Actually, I think we’re always searching for the best wine moment, every time we open a new bottle!

QOTD: My best experience I probably forgot, or blacked out! But the best are always shared with special people. There are so many, Dinner with Bruno Borie (Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou winery owner) always pops in my head as being most memorable.
