    I bought a 2006 Casillero del Diablo Carmenere sometime within the last six months. It’ll be my first carmenere but I don’t expect to start drinking any 2006s until 2009 at the earliest. I have too many 2004s and 2005s to try. Some of them are also varietals I’ve yet to try.

    We have enjoyed both the Casa Silva – Carmenere Reserva ($8.49 on sale) and the Concha y Toro “Casillero del Diablo” – Carmenere ($6.99 on sale) as well as the Veremonte “Primus” Cab/Merlot/Carmenere Blend(which went up substantially in price this year to $18.99). We have been pronouncing it “Car-men-air-a” but we do we know…

    QOTD I actually have had Casillero del Diablo & Concha Y Toro. I was excited to see you do this grape and disappointed that no keepers where identified. I am trying to remembers but I got turned on to Carmenere by the couple from the Wall Street Journal.

    A big Chile week.

    QOTD – I surprised myself checking the records, I’ve never had a 100% Carmenere. However last week I did have a Cabernet-Sauvignon/Carmenere blend, so since you did Chilean Cabs yesterday I’ll combine the two – Külapëlli Vineyard 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère Reserva Especiale. A delicious wine I rated at 89pts, bought in Jan 2006 and a couple of extra years in the bottle did it no harm whatsoever!

    I tired the Casillero del Diablo Reserve 2005. I’ve heard it isn’t the best carmenere, but it wasn’t bad for a first. It was worth the try and it went well with the beef stew I made that night.

    Two months ago I went to my local wineshop and they had their “Managers Favorite” on the first rack at the top with a huge sign and arrows. It was Casa Silva 2005 Los Lingues Gran Reserva Carmenere. I decided that since it was friendly enough at $18 to try it. The first time I uncorked it and poured it I fell instantly head-over-heels in love with it. In context I was coming from an ignorant palate full of embarrassing earlier mistakes. I bought another bottle a week ago and decided to give it another spin, it has lost that “loving feeling” just a tad, but still is quite an excellent wine.

    Odfjell “Aliara” Carmenere. Also very Cab-like, but still maintains some of the distinctive rustic Carmenere character. You should check out Concha’s high end Carm, “Terrunyo”

    QOTD: In Situ Reserva Carmenere. Nice price point at around 15 US bones.

    And I’d always been pronouncing it “Carmen-air”, not “Carmen-yair”, so I stand corrected.

    QOTD: The last Carmenere I had was my father-in-law’s Concha Y Toro version. I liked it less than his Concha Y Toro Cabernet/Merlot blend, which I’d rate an 80. Someday he may pay more than $10 for a bottle. But in the meantime, I make sure to bring a bottle or two of other red table wines to the family dinners.

    Love your shows and hey, it’s my first comment.
    Carmenere is definitely one of my favourite vino. Actualy we say “vin” without the “o” in romanian.
    My last one was the “varietal” 2006 Carmenere from Misiones de Rengo (www.misionesderengo.cl).

    Couldn’t agry more with @ridehood up here, Misiones de Rengo wines are extremely good. Ask them for samples and I belive you would make a lot of money importing them, if somebodyelse doesn’t allready.

    Palo Alto Reserve – I got a big stash as Sainsbury’s (in the UK) ar selling at 3 bottles for £10. That’s a total steal – even if a little too enthusiastic on the fruit front, it’s not fake. Having been to Chile earlier this year and drinking a lot of Carmenere I find it tremendously consistent and invariably great value.

    Gary V., I’m a long-time lurker, first-time commenter. Been watching the show for a few months now and it’s transforming my life. I too was disappointed that two out of your three carmeneres turned out to be so wack. I’ve enjoyed the Casillero del Diablo (a C&T label) immensely, for like $6.99 at Trader Joe’s. It has struck me as a varietal with the classiness and classic-ness of a Cab. Sauv., so it was interesting to learn that it was once revered in Bordeaux. If I remember correctly, I liked it as a kind of warm-blooded cousin to Cab. S., really a varietal worth looking into. Thanks again. I’ll continue to comment.

    My last was the 2005 Casa Silva Carménère Gran Reserva Los Lingues and it rocked!! Probably the first example of this varietal that I had which was truly ripened. Colour was very deep and lots of fruit in addition to earthy characteristics. To that point I had had very poor experiences with Carménère but was inspired by GV to varietals a number of shots before sitting them on the bench – great advice. My “pal” was getting a little tired of all of those jammy shiraz’ so this wine and a Bourgueil I had recently really hit the spot.

    Ah Ha! Finally, I have had carmenere from Chile. Terra Noble Gran Reserve 2003 and really enjoyed it, it was one the first wines I tried in starting to expand my expereince.

    I’m a big carmenere fan. Love the Concha y Toro Terrunyo carmenere. I have steered awawy form them, cuz they tend to be treated with too much oak and are too sweet. As a categoty they have a lot of potential. The Montes Purple Angel is good, but over priced at $40, but has a few % Petit Verdot in it which oughta get Gary excited.
