Carmenere was often confused with Merlot for a while. Survived Phylloxera only because it was planted in Argentina and Chile and they called it Merlot for the longest time. The world dodged a bullet on this species that almost got wiped out. I like the taste of it!

I would be so rediculously stoked if I could get a wristband. I may lose sleep over this :(

Not big on the carmenere, or really chile in general.

QOTD: I’ve never had a Carmenere. I’ve seen one bottle from France in a local store and have contemplated trying it, but after today’s episode, I’m kinda skeptical.

I PROMISE to try a Carmenere sometime before the end of June, IF I can find a bottle from Chile and it’s not one from this episode.

Good show, and you were great on Conan!

Congrats on yesterday’s book release!! (Already have all 3 wristbands). Great showing on Cramer yesterday – I was looking forward to see how both of your energies worked on camera – think it worked REALLY well. A blast to watch.

QOTD: Just looked at my consumption history on Cellartracker, and it appears I have never had a 100% carmenere bottle. Will promise to try one, hopefully my luck will be better than yours on todays show.

Montes has done some perfectly serviceable Carmenère. I like them a lot, especially since they’re inexpensive and unique, but haven’t had too many lately.

Your shirt totally rules!! I need to get one of those… Speaking of. Have you looked into baseball card prices lately? It’s ridiculous. I thought it was bad enough in the early 90s when there were about 6 different brands, but once EVERYONE started coming out with different “special series” I knew the industry was doomed.. there were like 15 different Fleer series going at once! And at the time, every card in the series was worth $50, when a Don Mattingly rookie card was worth $45. I haven’t picked up a Becket since the early 90s, but I remember even then the first 40 years of baseball cards were like 8 pages long, and the last 5 years was like 20 pages. I’m sure they can’t even publish everything now! But case in point, I remember around 1993 my Upper Deck Ken Griffy Jr. rookie card was worth around $125, and now it’s worth about $25!!! That’s so sad… I also have an autographed Donrus “Rated Rookie” Greg Maddux card that’s worth like $20 :-(

What’s this show about again? Wine? Hmm…

QOTD: 2003 Botalcura Carménère La Porfia Grand Reserve that I got from you guys! 91.6 point average on cellartracker.

QOTD: We found Carmenere a few years ago and have found several that we love as well, so I believe you Gary. The last great one I had was probably a PKNT Carmenere. It wasn’t anything outstanding, but it was solid and I’d drink it again.

QOTD: The last one that I remember was from Colvin, out of Walla Walla. It was a while ago, but I remember it being pretty good.

An idea… You should have a mini American flag under your table so you can have that in one hand with your 2X4 (the over-oaked wine) in the other to really represent Hacksaw JD.

    Good show.

I almost fell out of my chair laughing when you sniffed the Y Toro. I wondered if it would be too veggie even for you.

QOTD — I’ve had it in some blends, but the last 100% was the 2003 Concha Y Toro, actually, which I was not impressed by.

    Great show Gary!

My last Carmenere was a Concha Y Toro, but I had a little more luck with it than you did (it was a Casillero del Diablo lable). From the sounds of things, it was like an imaginary mix between the Errazuriz (defintiely oaked) and the conha y toro (a little green) you tried today…

  35. May 14, 2008

    Jon Ward

The last Carmenere I had was the Natura 2006 vintage and I liked it quite a bit. I’ve been looking for others to try but unfortunately, the wine selection in my part of the world is pretty laughable and WL can’t ship to TN :(

Nice show, i would like to see more from south america, i’m from venezuela.

QOTD – I have never had a carmenere but after to reaction to the veg flavors in the Concha Y Toro Carmenere I have to seek it out just to experience it.

The last Carmenere I had was by Origin which is an Albertson’s house brand. It was a 2004 and wasn’t bad. I liked it enough to purchase 2 more bottles which are stored at home. Other Carmeneres I have are 2005 Vina Requingua Puerto Viejo Reserve, Concha y Toro Casillero del Diablo, Hacienda Altavina which is a Fresh & Easy brand.

  46. May 14, 2008

I have never tried a Carmenere, but next time I’m out buying wine I will likely seek out and try a bottle.

I can’t say as I remember but will put it on the list of things to do.
Where does that “Oak Monster” come from, BTW? The barrel, the chemistry set or
the terroir? The oaks growing on the land?

    Promise.

  52. May 14, 2008

Yeah, the Chilean Crameneres are still pretty hit-and-miss.

QOTD: The last one I had was a Carmenere-Merlot blend called “oops”. The labeling is kinda gimmicky, but it easily beats out most of the other Crameneres I’ve had, and it’s cheap, too (~$10). I’ve also tried some of their other varieties (including a Rose of Cramenere) and not been disappointed.

  53. May 14, 2008

QOTD: I have never had a Carmenere but I do promise to try one in the next three months (free.winelibrary perhaps ;-)

QOTD: 2005 Concha y Toro Carménère Terrunyo Peumo Vineyard Block 27…for me 86……I have become a huge fan of this grape because I like the veggie, loam, Road Tar aspect of these wines, plus is doesn’t hurt the wallet. Great Restaurant wines!! It is funny the day you send me a shout out you pick a grape I love!

Can’t remember our last Carmenere, but I know we’ve had at least one. Great job on Conan and Mad Money, both were hysterical! I just got your books yesterday and read quite a bit. It’s very hard to put down and I know I’ll have to read it a few times to catch all your witty lines. I hope you come out with 101 wines every year to keep us updated on what you think are the hot buys. Thanks for everything Gary and for another great episode.

QOTD: Havn’t had a carmenere but I will try one. May go out right now and find one in fact. Might even try the Concha Y Toro if I can find it. For $4, why not. It’s worth a try even if I hate it. Good show and nice job on the “real tv” as well.

THe last Carmenere I had was a 2006 Santa Rita Reserva Carmenere. I thought it had a well rounded balance and lingering persistence. Its aroma is dominated by red fruits and spices. Priced decently. I really love the Carmere grape. Good show.

I think it was called Casa Silva and it was after a couple of other bottle wines so I don’t remember what it taste like. I drink more Spanish wines then I do Chilean wines.

  69. May 14, 2008

    Have not had a Carmenere.

Alas, I cannot promise to try one. I have purchased too many of the wines you have recommended and need to work through those first. Thus, I will need to have glass in hand for the next 3 months in order to do so. So, thank you for all of the recommendations. And you are welcome for all of the orders.

QOTD: Never had one but as soon as I can find one I will try it…..

Gary if you would consider it could you make some comments about the varietals general taste characteristics during the show? It would help this wine newbie to understand some things better….just a thought.

I don’t want to seem pushy, so if you haven’t seen my previous 2 comments asking for this, please continue to read: if you could give my Dad, Ed Sherman, a Happy Birthday shout-out this Friday, May 16th, that would be so incredibly awesome!!! Thanks GV!

    JonE

What about the smoke G-Man?? Yeah vegetable city, but any campfire action?

QOTD: The last carmenere was Colores del Sol. The name is very pretty, more so than the vino.

  74. May 14, 2008

    Mike L

It’s awesome how wine can really surpass or really fall short sometimes. Great show, it shows me that there can be misses, but that’s the beauty of trying wines and expanding palates.

QOTD:I had a Carmenere recently, but I can’t remember what it was. It was from Chile as was a Cab that I had from around the same area. It’s amazing how old world tasting they both were. The guy at the wine shop said something about Chile having a lot of really really old vines..just fascinating stuff!

I promise to try one if you promise to boycott foie gras, Gary!
I’ve decided I’ll keep watching the show, but I definitely won’t buy anything, (including the book!!) untill you come out one day and announce that you were wrong to eat foie gras and you’re going to start being more animal friendly!
Come on Gary! You’re just another “wine snob” till you do,
even if you hide it with your average guy sort of facade!
You can’t change the wine world till you’ve got its people on your side!

2006 Casa Silva Grand Reserva Carmenere. This wine, if you can find it, is an balanced (weird) FRUIT BOMB! Hi-C central!

  84. May 14, 2008

    Jeremy L

    GARY-
Please do one more Carmenere show very soon. Give all the vayniacs some hope for such a wonderful variety. In fact, just do a whole show on the Casa Silva wines. They are making 100% Sauvignon Gris. Thats right, Sauvignon Gris..an old white bordeaux varietal that is almost extinct. Good wines all around. Additionally, they make 100% P.V. pretty interesting. and no, I don’t work for them. Just a Silviac

Hmmmm…Can’t remember the last one I had, but I tried quite a few while traveling in Chile last fall, and wow, some are delicious. I have been pretty disappointed with what I have been finding stateside and wish someone would start importing Misiones de Rengo Carmenere, it was our go to wine down there. It was available at three levels; Carmenere, Reserva, and Gran Reserva. If I remember correctly, the Reserva was our favorite and came in at a whopping 7 bones. The monster reared its ugly head in the Gran Reserva, so not worth it.

Gary, look into this wine, I think it would really hit well up here. Find someone going down there to bring you back a bottle or two to try, and please import it! Its great, I would order the first case from you for sure.

I like the South American approach!

QOTD: Wow! By chance, I was drinking the Casa Silva Reserva (’05) before I watched WLTV today! This is my first carmenere, and am surprised by how long it took a RP rated wine to open up (24 hours, with about 2/3 of that in the ‘fridge). It was terrible within the first few hours of opening, but now is very rich and ripe, with prominent red fruit flavors on the attack. The nose is a nice balance of old and new with some dirt-bomb and slight tobacco layered over the fruit on the nose. There’s even a nice mid palate of strawberries and vanilla! This is probably the best wine I’ve had in the last month, though last night it was in the bottom 3!!!

  95. May 14, 2008

    Dominus

Good show though what does one expect from a very finicky varietal.

QOTD: Yes, love the Car juice and I’ve had the Luis Felipe Edwards Reserva which I thought was quite tasty.

  96. May 14, 2008

    Kurt

QOTD: I last had a carmenere when I was in Chile a few months ago. The name of the producer escapes me (probably from Casa Lapostelle). We visited so many wineries, including Aquitania (tiny boutique), Almaviva, Casa Lapostelle, Neyen, and so many more.

    The end of a relationship.

Just received Gary’s book in the mail today, and was astounded to only find 1 Washington State wine represented. For a man that has been such a proponent and ambassador for the state, this is perplexing and disappointing. The only conclusion I could come up with was that Gary and I just do not share similar palates, so it is Goodbye.

Too bad the wines were duds today! We had a lot of good wines today! Went to Wollersheim Winery in Prarie du Sac, WI for the tour and tasting.

QOTD: It’s been awhile, but I’ve had 2 Carmeneres- 2005 La Misiones Gran Cuvee and a blend with 60%, the 2005 Inama Carmenere Piu. Have to try more!

Hi Gar!! Yes, I had some wonderful wines at the Wollersheim Winery with fellow vayniacs Kristen and Michelle. I’ve never had a Carmenere, and I can’t make any promises but I will keep it in mind for the future.

Just went to a Chilean wine tasting. Really liked the Sauv Blancs. I brought a Viña Santa Rita Carmenere… it was good – nice meaty smell & flavors, went well with the grilled italian sausage I brought.

QOTD: I have had three, I do not recall the names. 2 were under $10 and were greeen as green can be. The third was $17 and was pretty good, still had some vegetal, but good core of plum.

GV, QOTD: What a coincidence, last carmenere was concha y toro. We agree. What was that song? Four Tops? ” Can’t get next to you”. Mouthful of barnyard rotting hay. I’ve been trying it over the last year or so and it just doesn’t get any better to my pallette.

QOTD: Terra Mater’s Paso del Sol was the most recent Carmenere I tried, about a week ago. It was total crap. I’m not surprised that the Frontera was a loser for you; while Concha y Toro does make some great wines — and their slightly higher end Casillero del Diablo is perhaps the greatest QPR carmenere on the market — nevertheless, their low-end Frontera line has always disappointed me. While Chile is generally a very reliable source for low-end (

QOTD: I have tried various Carmenere, but either I was not a huge fan,or there was a malbec in the tasting group that I feel in love with. Maybe I will do a little homework and find one that sounds like something that I would dig and try it.

I’ve had quite a few carmeneres, but none of them were memorable. I’ll always try one if it’s a good value, but it’s not a unique varietal that I seek out.

Chilean wines can try all they want – they still haven’t proresse very far past dirt in a bottle. Was that too snobby? Oh well – I’m wine snob that loves comic books.

Glad to see a Carmenere episode! I really love this grape and if you look hard you can find some real value.

Nice show . I went through a Concha Y Toro – Casillero del Diablo (Cellar of the Devil) Carmenere phase for a while.. For the price it’s tasty. The lower end Concha y toro isn’t the best but, I dig the dirt. I predicted a while back that this was going to be the new Break out grape .. Taking over the Pino Noir craze.. I was wrong. .. I think It’s propbaby Malbec.. Who cares really.. Anyway.. I am always willing to try Carmenere. It have had pleasant experience with it over all.. And turned some friends onto it, who would have probably not strayed away from their yellow tail a while back..

Santa Rita Reserva ‘05 and Casillero del Diablo ‘06…..they’re about all a pittsburgh yuppie can find/afford, but don’t take that as a complaint. My developing/non-discriminating palate enjoyed both quite a bit.

    E-Dub

    Gary,

LOVE Carmenere! First experience with it was in a chilean flight at a local tapas joint about 18 months ago. It was a Vina Santa Ema Reserve that was from the 90’s. One of the most memorable wines I’ve ever had and a light bulb going off in the development of my palate.

I can specifically remember the nose having overwhelming mocha and coffee notes that were backed up on the mid-palate. The finish was exceptionally long with chocolate covered strawberries and cloves. Looked for it ever since, and have tasted every other carmenere that I have seen in the PLCB or on a menu.

Some are really bad, but some are equally magical.

    E-Dub (Still a wristband rookie)

Ps… Since you’re into new things how about a Tavel show for summer and mothers day?

On the “trust your own palate” thing… I just had a bloody mary that my friend made for me. It was the BEST bloody mary I’ve ever had. Flat out…. bar none. It. Was. The. Best.

Even with that, we decided to pick nits and I explained that I would like a little lemon and a little less heat. We tried again and HOT DAMN…. I was near the big O. He said he liked it better the other way.

It just goes to show, everyone’s palate is different.

QOTD: I had my fair share of Carménère. It’s on the 60 mark, I guess. After all, I am going for a South American wines specialization. I personally think they are excellent for blends, and too hard to tame to become a nation representative as Malbec is for Argentina. When it achieves perfection, it is luscious, full bodied, coherent and new worldly with a hint of green. When it is rushed to comply with demand, it is green as a decorative fern (similar to Leatherleaf Fern).

I suggest the already mentioned: Botalcura, Calina, Santa Ema and Anakena. My favorites are Anakena and Terra Andina (excellent budget Carménère) and Santa Ema and Perez Cruz.

    P.S. Enough begging, I don’t want a wristband anymore!

    Hi Gary,

Had a million Carmenere´s down here… please at some point in your life, try the Carmín de Peumo bottling from Concha y Toro, pricey and hard to find, but oh my, is it worth every cent… serioiusly, top 25 wines of all time, that is one of them for me.

Hey I got my Amazon books (6) but would love for you to sign them… any way to do that? I missed your NYC book signing by a day, had to fly out to San Jose on tuesday… bummer.

Casa Silva Reserva. Seems like carmeneres tend to fall into one of the two camps you hit on this show: overly vegetal and a little difficult, or cleaned up and cab-like (like the tomboy skater chick who cleans up well?). Would you agree or do you see more range? Definitely a grape I look for, and a good number of reasonably priced ($10-15) options are out there.

QOTD: My last Carmenère from Chile was the “MontGras Carmenère Reserva 2005″. 87 points by the Wine Spectator, but I really disliked it: for me, the wine had rather thin mouth-feel, a hollow mid-palate and an awkward finish. But I really liked the “La Joya Carmenère Gran Reserva 2001″, which I had last year.

Of the 50 (or so) single varietal wines I’ve tried, it’s one of those that I really haven’t explored very much. The last one I had was the 2005 Santa Alicia Carménère Reserve. QOTD: I believe someone mentioned the Casillero del Diablo Carmenere, cheap and good. Everyone should try this one to start with if you haven’t had it, let it breath though. About 7 bones at Trader Joes, widely availabe. 88pts WS but should be more.

Gary: Concha y Toro Frontera series is usually crappy. That is their bottom line. You had some bad choices today, as you somewhat admitted. I’ve never had a good wine from Errazuriz.

    Some other recommendations:

    Concha y Toroyo Terunyo Carmenere
    Anakena Carmenere Single Vineyard

Thanks for the Carmenere review. I happen to drink Concha y Toro Carmenere as my “every day red”. I enjoy it just sipping or with a nice steak. I never thought it was the best of the best, but I never blasted it like some comments have or you did. At that price point, i’d like anyone to come up with something better.

That being said, I’m open for trying other, more expensive Carmenere. I dont have any in the cellar now, but i’ll see what I can find. I’ll review it, though not as well as gary, on my website.

Ventisquero ‘Quelat’ Carmenere and just last evening. Although Concha Y Toro’s Terrunyo (single vineyard) is the big winner for me $30 beans, 94pts by Parker. Love to try Concha’s reserve carmenere even above that that Parker gave a 97. Carmenere has hit the big time and it is does have a lovely little tale to tell. I enjoy the chilean blends with loads of merlot alongside carmenere and cab. There is a certain racy, meaty, exotic quality about it I sometimes find irresistable. Good show Gary, there are a lot of fine Carmenere’s out there. Great grill companions too!

Carmenere is our best selling wine by the glass. And the funny thing is most people have never heard of the grape, but once they taste it they love it.

I loved your t-shirt. Haven’t seen the phrase “Rated Rookie” in a while. It makes me wish my 1986 Jose Canseco Donruss rookie card was still worth something.

I’m a big carmenere fan. Love the Concha y Toro Terrunyo carmenere. I have steered awawy form them, cuz they tend to be treated with too much oak and are too sweet. As a categoty they have a lot of potential. The Montes Purple Angel is good, but over priced at $40, but has a few % Petit Verdot in it which oughta get Gary excited.

Ah Ha! Finally, I have had carmenere from Chile. Terra Noble Gran Reserve 2003 and really enjoyed it, it was one the first wines I tried in starting to expand my expereince.

My last was the 2005 Casa Silva Carménère Gran Reserva Los Lingues and it rocked!! Probably the first example of this varietal that I had which was truly ripened. Colour was very deep and lots of fruit in addition to earthy characteristics. To that point I had had very poor experiences with Carménère but was inspired by GV to varietals a number of shots before sitting them on the bench – great advice. My “pal” was getting a little tired of all of those jammy shiraz’ so this wine and a Bourgueil I had recently really hit the spot.

Gary V., I’m a long-time lurker, first-time commenter. Been watching the show for a few months now and it’s transforming my life. I too was disappointed that two out of your three carmeneres turned out to be so wack. I’ve enjoyed the Casillero del Diablo (a C&T label) immensely, for like $6.99 at Trader Joe’s. It has struck me as a varietal with the classiness and classic-ness of a Cab. Sauv., so it was interesting to learn that it was once revered in Bordeaux. If I remember correctly, I liked it as a kind of warm-blooded cousin to Cab. S., really a varietal worth looking into. Thanks again. I’ll continue to comment.

Palo Alto Reserve – I got a big stash as Sainsbury’s (in the UK) ar selling at 3 bottles for £10. That’s a total steal – even if a little too enthusiastic on the fruit front, it’s not fake. Having been to Chile earlier this year and drinking a lot of Carmenere I find it tremendously consistent and invariably great value.

    Hello Gary (from Romania),

Love your shows and hey, it’s my first comment.
Carmenere is definitely one of my favourite vino. Actualy we say “vin” without the “o” in romanian.
My last one was the “varietal” 2006 Carmenere from Misiones de Rengo (www.misionesderengo.cl).

Couldn’t agry more with @ridehood up here, Misiones de Rengo wines are extremely good. Ask them for samples and I belive you would make a lot of money importing them, if somebodyelse doesn’t allready.

QOTD: The last Carmenere I had was my father-in-law’s Concha Y Toro version. I liked it less than his Concha Y Toro Cabernet/Merlot blend, which I’d rate an 80. Someday he may pay more than $10 for a bottle. But in the meantime, I make sure to bring a bottle or two of other red table wines to the family dinners.

Odfjell “Aliara” Carmenere. Also very Cab-like, but still maintains some of the distinctive rustic Carmenere character. You should check out Concha’s high end Carm, “Terrunyo”

Two months ago I went to my local wineshop and they had their “Managers Favorite” on the first rack at the top with a huge sign and arrows. It was Casa Silva 2005 Los Lingues Gran Reserva Carmenere. I decided that since it was friendly enough at $18 to try it. The first time I uncorked it and poured it I fell instantly head-over-heels in love with it. In context I was coming from an ignorant palate full of embarrassing earlier mistakes. I bought another bottle a week ago and decided to give it another spin, it has lost that “loving feeling” just a tad, but still is quite an excellent wine.

I tired the Casillero del Diablo Reserve 2005. I’ve heard it isn’t the best carmenere, but it wasn’t bad for a first. It was worth the try and it went well with the beef stew I made that night.

    A big Chile week.

QOTD – I surprised myself checking the records, I’ve never had a 100% Carmenere. However last week I did have a Cabernet-Sauvignon/Carmenere blend, so since you did Chilean Cabs yesterday I’ll combine the two – Külapëlli Vineyard 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère Reserva Especiale. A delicious wine I rated at 89pts, bought in Jan 2006 and a couple of extra years in the bottle did it no harm whatsoever!

QOTD I actually have had Casillero del Diablo & Concha Y Toro. I was excited to see you do this grape and disappointed that no keepers where identified. I am trying to remembers but I got turned on to Carmenere by the couple from the Wall Street Journal.

We have enjoyed both the Casa Silva – Carmenere Reserva ($8.49 on sale) and the Concha y Toro “Casillero del Diablo” – Carmenere ($6.99 on sale) as well as the Veremonte “Primus” Cab/Merlot/Carmenere Blend(which went up substantially in price this year to $18.99). We have been pronouncing it “Car-men-air-a” but we do we know…

You dragged out our first comment after months of “lurking”.

I bought a 2006 Casillero del Diablo Carmenere sometime within the last six months. It’ll be my first carmenere but I don’t expect to start drinking any 2006s until 2009 at the earliest. I have too many 2004s and 2005s to try. Some of them are also varietals I’ve yet to try.

I am into Carmenere in a big way. As I understand it, the grape has only survived in Chile and was mistakenly marketed as Merlot for the many years. If I am not mistaken, it took DNA analysis to make the distinction. (An idea for a blind taste test for a future episode, mayhaps?) I like the Santa Rita Reserve 2005 as well as the Caselliere Del Diablo and Veramonte. Inexpensive and fits the groove in my palate…

It’s funny. I was catching up on about a weeks worth of episodes with a bottle of Carménère from Valle Colchagua. It’s the 2006 Natura. Gotta say…not a fan. The description that they gave on the back of the bottle and the way it tasted didn’t really match for me. And you know who showed up? “Grrr!” The Oak Monster was very in the forefront.

I love Carmenere. Veramonte Primus is my favorite. I’ve had several vintages. It was so remarkable that we decided to plant some when we did a re-plant. It has delivered with fabulous spice flavors. 100% or a blend it’s been great. The funny thing is is it doesn’t present well at all initially (compared to cab or merlot) but develops very well after a few years. It definitely needs acid adjustment, however.

    Responding to Richard Bakker…

That Colores del Sol Carmenere is AMAZING!! Especially for the value! Actually the whole line is great… they have a Chardonnay, Sav. Blanc (My favorite), Merlot, and Cabernet! Great great brand!!!

    bro man,
carmenere is named for its hue, which resembles a deep garnet (aka: the color carmine), and comes from the dalmatian coast of croatia (similar to primitivo). Italy is growing some serious carm. these days (esp. imana piu from veneto). Incredible mid pallette structure, obvious dark fruit (leather, tobacco, etc.), great acid…
    Come to the southwest.

Love the episode on Carmenere, thought you would like to know:
The winemaker that is called the “King of Carmenere” in Chile is named Mario Gueiss, he is making wines for Vina Casa Silva and does an excellent job.
He use to work at Vina La Joya and his wife Joanna still works as the head wine maker.
Two Chilean wineries that are making incredible Carmenre, a grape that not all wineries know what to do with.

Hi Gary, Thank you for the Carmenere episode. Although from Concha y Toro I’ve would have gone for the Casillero del Diablo Carmenere. The last Carmenere I had was a Santa Ema Carmenere 2003. Pretty well balanced, although a bit tannic. And I can’t remember what the Frontera tastes like. So, I’m gonna have to try it again.

Interesting show on Carmenere. I have never had the specific Carmeneres you tried. Curious why you would think a very young 2006 wine would be over oaked..of course the wine maker might be making a wine to age a few years and obviously the oak will fade as the flavors meld over a couple years.

If you hate oak and only drink young wines you must hate Grange and all First Growths too? I am new to your site so I don’t know where you stand on this.

Thank you for doing a Carmenere show! I find this grape to have such a cool history, I’m wicked excited about it. Gary, my favorite wine these days is a carmenere from Chile, Paso Rojo 2006, Central Valley. I bought a case, because I got such a great deal on it as they were closing it out. That is from my wine distributor, by the way. I run a restaurant. After drinking the case with my wife and some frineds over a month, I purchased the remaining 10 cases that my distributor had. In my opinion, it is amazing. I can send you a bottle if you would like.

Qotd: the last one was the ventisquero reserva 2007 carmenere (which really needs to breathe for 3 hours or so) it starts off all dirty and green but after 3 hours or so it really opens up to reveal explosive fruits.

I also like the terra andina which also needs a bit of air but when it opens you get explosive strawberry and raspberry and even a hint of like almond paste.

Yo! Drinking a 2008 Chilean Fairtrade Carmenere right now at this precise moment in time. Unfortunately – it’s not a great bottle either! But I’ve had some nice Carmenere’s in the past from Chile, the Cono Sur one is very solid if a little on the “beefy” side!
