Fav Pinot Gris waas the 2003 Mambourg Pinot Gris by Pierre Sparr. Had this on my 12th anniversary at a great little restaurant and it went very well with the 6 course meal we had. Very versatile. Great show… love the battles. I’m usually a lurker but I’ll try and leave more comments.

QOTD: Lemelson Tikka’s Run 2006 (Oregon). I think I’ve commented about this wine 3 or 4 times now, it’s fantastic and completely changed my whole outlook on the grape.

    Cephalopunk

The Lis Neris was described as having “laser sharp acidity” and “roundness”?

QOTD: Alsatian Pinot Gris is pretty much the best for me… although the Neusiedlersee-Hügelland Grauburgunder from Austria was awfully nice. I’d like to try more Pinot Gris from Oregon.

  12. May 22, 2008

Well, I guess it’s Pinot Gris for Thirsty Thursday night. I can’t remember if I ever did have one…

    Nice! Summer whites!!!

  14. May 22, 2008

QOTD: I need to try an Alsatian, I’ve just had the mass produced Italian ones and a SIMI from Healdsburg. Summertime is a’comin’!

I’ve had a Grigio but not a Gris. At least that I know of, since, I didn’t realize there was a distinction. Very informative.

QOTD – Trimbach Reserve Pinot Gris from the Alsace (2004 or 2005…I can’t remember which). Very, very good PG.

QOTD – Must admit to never having had either of these types of wine.

first time in top 10…I don’t feel nay different…

  19. May 22, 2008

    Lawrence Leichtman

I have to go with the Trimbach as well as they are always my favorite Pinot Gris.

  20. May 22, 2008

    Dr T from N. Carolina

I’ve only had a few Pinot Gris, and didn’t care for them.As for the Pinot Grigio, I’ve only had the inexpensive super market versions (Bolla, Bella etc.), inoffensive but hardly special. I’ll go with Bolla, in memory of the sting ray and leek soup it accompanied, made by my wife (and the sting ray caught by my father-in-law on his second trip to the US)

QOTD: I’ve enjoyed many Pinot Gris wines over the years. I don’t have a favorite. Sorry. I’ve had plenty from Alsace, CA, and OR. I traveled on Route Du Vin in Alsace and enjoyed the heck out of it.

    Very good and quick battle!

    QOTD:
A German “Grauburgunder” aka Pinot Grigio from Schlossgut Diel!

Long time lurker here. You finally coaxed me into posting…actually, I just, finally, got off my lazy butt and decided to do it. Anyway, my wife and I “found” wine a couple of years ago and we absolutely love it. We’re big into trying different wines, and so I like to make up some theme when I go to the local shop. I’ll try three bottles from Bordeaux, or three Rieslings, or three under $10…you get the idea. We’re really enjoying it. I love the show, you do great work…very entertaing and at the same time informative. Keep it up.

QOTD – We tried one bottle of Pinot Gris and I am 95% sure it was corked…it was horrible. The other 5% lies in the fact that it was kind of early in our wine “career” and my palatte may have just been that far off. Either way, it was bad enough that I have shied away from trying another one.

  24. May 22, 2008

QOTD: I’ve had plenty and disliked almost all. But I’m not counting it out yet. I want to try an Oregon one.

You know, I use to live on a winery. I’ve sniffy-sniffed a good amount of wines (Still too young, can’t admit to drinking any here.) Never have tried a pino gris or grigio. I like to fruitier ones, so maybe Ill try the 2004 Gris.

Nice head to head…love the cross-country battle.

Embarrassingly, I’ve never had one – Although I made some mushroom risotto with some cheap pinot grigio years ago – but never actually tasted it. Oops.

Love the head to head wine-tastings…QOTD: I don’t know if I ever had a Pinot-Gris…will have to give it a try…not sure if I will like it but love the description you give Gary ” Forest-floor action “…”Metal Aluminium Bat”…Can’t wait! Pinot Grigio I like when it’s very hot out…a break from red wine during summer.

QOTD: I don’t think I have tried a Pinot Gris. I do like Pinot Grigio. Last had one from Grape Creek (Texas). Very good.

A P-G Head-to-head! Love the wine, love the format!

QOTD – Lieu-dit Stierkopf 2004 Pinot Gris, Alsace – Grapefruit on the nose, a hint of lemon. Rich mouthfeel with a citrusy tang, slight bitterness, like a sweet Grapefuit. Excellent, I gave it 90pts but Sarah found it too bitter.

  33. May 22, 2008

QOTD: I thought of a few I liked, MacMurray Ranch Russian River Valley, Chehalem (OR), and from Alsace, ALBERT MANN, LUCIEN ALBRECHT.

    UTshock

I haven’t had many bottles of Pinot Gris. I suppose my “favorite” is the only one I remember, and that’s the 2006 Alma Rosa Pinot Gris. I remember it being crisp, but it didn’t blow me away.

    QOTD: St. Innocent Pinot Gris.

For those who don’t know St. Innocent wines, they need to in a big way. Great Chardonnay as well as Pinot (Gris,Blanc and Noir) all kept at a reasonable prices despite his success.

Actually, I haven’t had any white wine in ages!
I’ll have to try some more soon.
It’s Californian Cabernet Sauvignon tonight though! ; )
First American wine in ages, too.
You guys better be makin’ good juice! ; )

Oh yeah and I still can’t leave comments without bothering you about this after seeing ep. 292:
Quit the foie gras, Gary!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I wanna hear you say it!!!!!

    Good day.

Gary, is that the same shirt you wore yesterday?!
We had several Pinot Grigios from Italy last summer, but I tend to prefer Alsatian Gewertz.

Can we please have a Jersey “Wet Garbage” T-Shirt now? HILARIOUS! I’ve never had pinot gris, btw…I’m assuming ti tastes the same.

QOTD: I have to go with Zind-Humbrecht Turkheim, but i’m not even going to get into the SGN’s…it wouldn’t be fair. Also, check out Alois Lageder’s single vineyard grigio “Benefizium” from the Alto Adige in Italy. And for new world, I really like Elk Cove from Oregon. Peace.

  53. May 22, 2008

Awesome battle. Love the head to head competition especially with 2 kick ass vinos.

QOTD: I’d have to say Trimbach – high end or low they are always cosistently good (Kris is prob my favorite value pinot grigio – it has it all over santa margherita at halsf the price)

  54. May 22, 2008

    Suzanne

QOTD: I’ve had Pinot Gris before, but none that stand out in my memory, though.

On a different note, had some very spicy Indian curry the other night with a Gewurtztraminer on your recommendation–it was awesome! I’ll have to try the Pinot Gris again with spicy food to see if it works out, too.

  55. May 22, 2008

The best Pinot Gris I have ever tasted is the 2006 Del Rio Vineyard’s Pinot Gris. It emphasizes ripe tropical and citrus fruit qualities and juicy, mouthwatering freshness.

By the way you keep mispronouncing Oregon. Say it like this: ORYGUN

  74. May 22, 2008

    lumpyatst

New to this wine thing but have been lurking for a week and feeling guilty. Last time I had wine was on a cruise 6 weeks ago but would like to try some more, enjoyed a fume blanc then and also a sangiovese wine, first two bottles of wine consumed ever. I need to find some wines my wife would enjoy as she has had no experience with wine or other drinks. Again, I enjoy your show, wish you could ship to Minnesota.

Old Jim Stock-aka the Haw River Wine man introduced me to Lis Neris, back in the day. Thanks Jim.

QOTD: Jermann P/G, and Zind Humbrecht ofcourse. Also the higher level Lis Neris-Gris??-has always been popular with me.

  78. May 22, 2008

    BobbyTiger

QOTD- Never had a good Pinot Gris………..but…..as your wrist band got a complete work out from your dribbling these two apparently fine wines, maby I have found one. Time will tell. Nice head to head Gary.

  79. May 22, 2008

    Christophe - Titus Vineyards

It’s gotta be either a Trimbach or a Zind Humbrecht. There was a small Alto Adige I liked too, Kupelwieser; very nice. Past tense because shopping locally it is very valley centric.

    cgatesman

FINALLY! I’ve caught up! Been pretty crazy with work lately, and I fell so far behind on shows. Now, I’m back, baby!

    Good show!

QOTD: I can’t really say what my favorite Pinot Gris has been. I don’t drink them much. Not a huge fan.

  81. May 22, 2008

QOTD: Never had one except a few sips. Its reputation is the “merlot” of white wines.

Oooh, a draw! Didn’t see that one coming. Sounds like two completely different palates.

QOTD – Never had a Gris, but now I’ll have to try one. Had two different Grigios last night. Really enjoyed the Bottega Vinaia. :)

  86. May 22, 2008

I have had only one Pinot Gris, it was ok. Drinkable but definitely lacking the thunder. Don’t remember the name.

  87. May 22, 2008

I can’t remember the last Pinot Gris/Grigio that I had, but now I really want to try both of these selections in a head to head death match!

QOTD.. don’t know if it was the best ever, but it’s the one I thought of and that is Willamette Valley PG from Or E Gon ;) , not sure if I spelled that just right..but close enough.

I’m still new to the wine world and have yet to try a Pinot Gris (Grigio). I’m working my way around to them but it is slow going ($$).

Glad to see a Binner on the show. I’ve had a bunch of their wine and all of it excellent. So that’s probably the best one I’ve had…

  96. May 22, 2008

Never had an actual Pinot Gris, but I have had Pinot Grigio. Unfortunately, I have not had very good ones.

    QOTD:
    -Never had one :(

  98. May 22, 2008

    theemptyglass

QOTD: Sorry Gary, I don’t remember any of the pinot grigios or gris that I’ve had, I know I’ve had and enjoyed many, but there’s none on my list of ones that I’ve reviewed, so I can’t really give details. But you requested we reply anyways.

Great show Gary! Thanks so much for everything you do.

QQTD: I have had a Pinot Grigio. I really enjoy their clean crispness. I have only had Italian Pinot, but I am really excited to try different areas.

A battle for the ages! Can’t France win something for a change?!?

QOTD: The only Pinot Gris I’ve ever had was from Oregon, and I can’t even recall the name because it was Blah!

    QOTD: Can’t remember it’s been so long….

    Where’s the wrestling move?

  104. May 22, 2008

Antwerpen (Belgium) is only 400 km from the Alsace. I had some of my first wine-holidays there as a student. Many budget friendly wines. So I had a whole lot of Pinot Gris. I did not taste Trimbach or Zind Humbrecht yet but I did taste and like Kreydenweis a lot.

  105. May 22, 2008

    Badger Ann

QOTD: I’ve tried Pinot Gris from Oregon. It wasn’t very memorable. I’d be willing to try one from Alsace.

Pinot Grigio has never impressed me, to be honest. I think there are much better whites similar in weight out there – I’ll usually reach for an albarino, sauvignon blanc from NZ, or German riesling instead.

  106. May 22, 2008

Haven’t had a pinot gris or pinot grigio before. great episode as always gary

  110. May 22, 2008

    terroirist

The last two I remember were the ever popular Santa Margarita Pinot Grigio. I don’t remember the vintage. For the QPR it does not bring the thunder.. and the Kris Pinot Grigio was a better deal price wise for the quality.. I’v never really been into this varitial, however I’ve never had one from Alsace..

Well, it wasn’t straight P. Gris, but I just had a 2000 Grunspiel from Marcel Deiss, and it was incredible. Of course I think there was more Riesling and Gewurz than P. Gris.

QOTD: 2006 King Estate – The wife is a big New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc drinker, but she loves this and I must admit that it is quite good. I bought all the had at the local World Market.

QTD: My favorite inexpensive pinot grigio was Ecco Domani pre-2004, but the later vintages give me a headache even after just a few sips. I liked it because it was really light and fruity in the beginning but it had a real bite at the end. I have not found another that I like but I am trying.

QOTD: I have not tried many Pinot Gris..but there is one that I like very much… (Just left for 10 mins. looking for the bottle!)
Its ANCIEN / Carneros / Sangiacomo Vineyards I love the peach and honey and subtle acidity of this wine…
I think I will try the Binner

I have not had one to my recollection, but I have recently added one to my cellar that I need to open soon. One of the great things about the show is it gets me psyched to try new wines.

The best pinot gris I have had recently is the King Estate Pinot Gris, 2006, Oregon.

Gary, despite that you’re in a fruity mood, I’ll answer the QOTD: Best Pinot Gris I’ve had is… I haven’t had a “best” one. My sister served Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio, but what’s there to say about that? Someday I’d like to try an example from Oregon or Alsace.

    I really enjoyed this format.

QOTD – The only (and so by default the best) PG I have had is the 2005 Waterstone Carneros Pinot Grigio. I enjoyed it but was not overwhelming in my opinion.

QOTD: Trimbach is a good go to Pinot Gris. I also really like A to Z from Oregon. Duck Pond can be good (the current vintage (06)is a little hot though). I had an amazing one from Germany once…can’t remember the producer though.

QOTD: Haven’t had too many, but the Esca 2006 Pinot Grigio is the best one of that variety that I can remember. I’ve had some really lame, flavorless, watery Italian Pinot Grigios but those were by the glass in restaurants that didn’t have much to offer. Oh, and Santa Margarita, which was pretty lame too.

He really wants to talk to you about that misunderstanding some of your young Vayniacs had at the Gruet Winery. He’s taking it very seriously. Great show today! Yes, even you GV. I like the head-to-head action.
Best Pinot Gris I’ve ever had was a 1996 by Sparr. It had an awesome almond/ cheese rind thing going on and great minerality… I should look for some more good PG.

QOTD: Well, from Germany i prefer the grauburgunder from markus schneider (Pfalz) and Schlossgut Diel (Nahe). From Italy the Collavini Pinot Grigio Collio (Friuli). From Alsace i also had some good Pinot Gris, but can’t exactly neme them. I think it’s very exiting, that Germany has reached such a high quality-level in grauburgunder and weissburgunder. There is more to find then the better known Riesling…

Living in the heart of Oregon’s wine country, I have had several pinot gris’. Believe it or not though, the best I have had was from an amateur winemaker friend who lives nearby. He bottled what he made under the label of “Fermenting Friends” and his 2006 was outstanding.

QOTD: I haven’t tried any pinot gris. I tried ‘bella sera’ pinot grigio, which is a cheap wine. I also tried a Pinot Blanc by Chalone, and it was ok, although I tried it together with a nice Chard that overpowered the pinot blanc.

No Pinot Gris that I can say I enjoyed. I haven’t had that many yet, but it’s hard to say which one was your favorite when none of them stood out as good wines. I’m working on it! I’ve only had a couple of bottles earlier this year, one a 2007 from Tasmania and the other a 2007 from Central Otago in New Zealand – both produced by The Wine Society (an Australian non-profit wine club). I bought a case of each as an experiment (trying different wines right!). Good refreshing summer wines and (from memory) an alternative to Rieslings in terms of food matchings.

I might do my own cold-zone head to head – Tassie vs NZ :-)

Pinot Gris used to be called Tokay Pinot Gris in Alsace. But it changed because its name resembled too much to the Hungarian Tokay wine.
I like it better when it is vendange tardive (late crop) that turns it into a moëlleux (sweet wine), especially the one of the Hugel family heading their business since 1639.
I’m a happy owner of a 1997 vintage, labeled Tokay Pinot Gris. I keep it preciously to drink with foie gras that can be prepared with a bit of this nectar.

Can’t remember the last Italian Pinot Grigio I’ve had, and I’m DYING to try an Alsacian one after seeing your reaction to the Binner. Hey Gary,

Sorry to correct you on this, since you are going to Portland pretty soon, I thought I should mention this to you.

Its always dangerous to speak in superlatives, but the 1989 Zind Humbrecht Pinot Gris Clos Windsbuhl Vendange Tardive is far and away the best PG I have ever had. No surprise coming from one of the greatest winemakers living and a fabulous vineyard. BTW all of the 2005 ZH Pinot Gris are terrific.

I have been enamored with Vino for the past few years and am only starting to feel a little comfortable with my wine tasting and evaluating. These episodes help me fine tune my nose and palate much better. That’s why you are the best at what you do, you know your audience.
    Be blessed Brother!

One more I cannot believe I had left out was from Alsace; the Donines Schlumberger Pinot Gris ‘Les Princes Abbes’, also biodynamic. they are so cool they still farm with horses and hands only! Ronck on Gary V enjoy the downtime; its much deserved!

QOTD: Best PG? Never had. All were like cheap, sour, drink along wines. I mean, they did not add to the food but were better alternatives to beer…. :-(

  242. May 23, 2008

Best one I’ve had so far – Goose Bay Pinot Gris 07 from new Zealand – and its even kosher! The QPR might be a little tough at around $23, but it’s a very good wine.

I think the best I’ve had was an ‘05 Weinbach. Not sure on the spelling there or which it was if there’s more than one. Are you thinking of Bananas Foster? Great fried banana dessert.

A DRAW …WAW,BUT TO BE HONEST GARY I THINK THAT YOU WERE FAIR ,BUT ANYWAY TO ANSWEAR THE QUESTION OF THE DAY ,THE BEST PINOT GRIS I’VE HAD IS THE TRIMBACH FROM THE ALSACE ,AND ALSO ENJOY ITALIAN PINOT GRIGIO VS DOMESTIC ONES JUST BECAUSE OF THE FACT THAT THEY’RE DRYER ,BUT I GOT TO TELL YOU THAT I HAVE A WEAKENESS FOR THE KING STATE PINOT GRIS FROM OREGAN .

Great head-to-header! QOTD: The most interesting Pinot Gris I tried was the Nobilo Icon, Marlborough NZ–it was almost peachy-orange in color, with a honey, floral nose-more like an Alsatian but with a wierd little acidic zap.

  254. May 23, 2008

I honestly don’t think I have ever tried a pinot gris? I finally decided to start trying more white wines lately, so i guarantee next wine stop i make i’ll picking up one of these bottles!

Very good head to head contest.

QOTD: My all time hands down favorite is the King Estate “Domaine” Pinot Gris (from Oregon). Well worth the few extra bones over the regular bottling and it’s Organicly grown to boot.

We had our first pinot gris last weekend. 2000 Trimbach Vendanges Tardives from Alsace. It was mighty delicious, and I was surprised at it’s sweetness. It was a great match for the thai take out we had.

I’ve many pinot grigios, and they have all been sharp and citrus like flavors, much drier than the pinot gris.

I’m wracking my brain but I can’t remember one that i’ve had but I for some reason feel like I did try one awhile ago and it reminded me alot of gewurtztraminer. Great episode, always nice to see both wines bringing the thunder. There seemed to be a long stretch where most of the wines on WLTV ended up sucking. I’ve heard Oregon is a great spot for pinot gris.

  266. May 23, 2008

    Miguel Cavalcanti

Great show! A high-level draw is good though methinks you favored the Binner just a tad. QOTD: Klein aux Vieux Remparts Pinot Gris “Burgreben” — just AOC so not a grand cru, but at 17 bones a pretty good deal because it was outstanding with pork/ginger/cabbage/garlic/tsin-tsin potstickers. We’re also witcha on the “Izzit sweet or not?” thing. It’s not! On the other hand, it does seem just a little sweet, except when it’s not. Cali PG is all sweet, bland, no focus, but thanks to posters for the many Oregon recommendations.

Qotd: Nothing stands out as the best one, but the Keesha- Hungry Pinot Gris brought smone recent thunder for sure. Gary, just wanted to say that I finally bought the book last night…awesome. The intro made me remember why I got interested in WLTV and really spoke both from, and to, the heart. I stumbled onto WLTV during a difficult time in my life and it has only been a blessing in a myriad of ways. Seriously- Thank you Gary, we are so lucky!

    Hey GV,

QOTD – I’ve had one Pinot G, in my time as a legal wine drinker and that was at the first tasting I ever went to that a friend was kind enough to put on. No clue what it was, but it was definitely from Cali.

  277. May 24, 2008

    Rebecca

Hey Gary ~ Nice face-off! I think the Binner would be my favorite of the two… Pinot Grigio isn’t my favorite white (so many of them can be thin and lacking in the fruit department); but as it’s the season, I’ve tasted several lately. I’m going to go with the 2006 J Pinot Gris for now.

  278. May 24, 2008

05 and 06 elk cove, oregon PG is outstanding. also try columbia winery, washington 07 PG. latter is reasonably priced crisp and well balanced. elk cove is $25 a bottle. it is crisp, clean and wonderful with halibut, shrimp, scallops or just sitting on a deck enjoying the spring and summer.

QOTD. Three candidates for the best Pinot Gris I’ve ever had, two Italians and one Alsatian. First, 2006 Castelcosa “Ramato.” “Ramato” is Italian for “copper colored,” which results from extra long skin contact. I met the winemaker, Marco Furlan, and he said that this is closer to the traditional way of making Pinot Grigio. He didn’t have a high opinion of Pinot Grigio as it is made for the American market. “Ramato” won’t be for everybody. It reminded me a bit of some the wine being made by Radikon. My second candidate is 2005 Vie di Romans “Dessimis” — nose of honeysuckle and rainy street, palate rich and high acid, just beautiful. My third candidate is 2005 Lucien Albrecht “Cuvee Romanus” — nose of ginger, green tea, & ginseng. All three are amazing wines in different ways.

  285. May 25, 2008

Very, very good show!! I love these taste-off’s. I suggest a head to head battle between the 1999 Chateau Musar from Lebanon and any red Bordeaux.

  286. May 25, 2008

Not a whole lot of experience with PG’s. Last one I had was the Hugel (Alsace), which I picked up at Waitrose (the grocery store) in London about a year ago, on my way to a Thai dinner at my cousin’s. Waitrose is probably the highest quality grocery chain in the UK (way better than anything here in the US). Most stores have a very decent selection of old and new world wines (at all price points).

  288. May 26, 2008

The best pinot gris I’ve had is from Bergstrom in Oregon. I’ve had a number of pinot grigios, most often Santa Margherita, but none have been quite as good as the Bergstrom. Though, in my effort of become more of an Italian wine snob, I’m anxious to try as many as I can! I’m on the lookout for the Lis Neris! Mille grazie, Gary!

    GR8wine

    Hi Gary,
Very nice show. Those 2 wines really demonstrated the classic difference between the Italian Pinot Grigio’s and Pinot Gri’s from Alsace. The one exception is that in my limited experience I’ve found the Pinot Gri’s to have a little more body than the Pinot Grigio’s.
QOTD: Unfortunately I can’t remember the name of the Pino Gri I had from Alsace since it was in a wine class, but it was very full bodied, almost like a chardonnnay.

  293. May 26, 2008

    Hey Gary, great face off.

I’ve never had a Pinot Grigio before… the only white wine I’ve ever had was the white wine you brought to the Conan viewing party at Bounce, so unless you brought a Pino Grigio/Gris to the Conan viewing, then I’ve really never tried it before.

    Great show!

Ahhh..you can’t call it a draw! Ties are worse that losing..just think how the wines feel.

I’m curious to why you tasted the Pinot Gris first, because it has higher rs. Maybe that put the pinot grigio at a disadvantage?

QOTD: I remember really loving a ‘92 Trimbach SGN I had–although I’m not sure if that counts. The first time I had an Alsatian pinot gris was like a revelation for me. Before I tried one, I had bashed pinot grigio because the majority of them I tried stunk, but now I’m hooked on trying new ones.

  300. May 27, 2008

QOTD: Gotta go with my home province of BC, Canada. The Pinot Gris here is among the best in North America (at least from what I’ve tasted). Of the ones I’ve had, two stand out: Wild Goose Vineyards and Burrowing Owl.

  301. May 27, 2008

QOTD: I’ve never had pinot gris before, but I have had pinot grigio a couple times. They were mostly your average pinot grigio, but not poorly made either. I can’t remember the producers off the top of my head, mostly because they didn’t surprise me, but they were solid-effort type wines.

  305. May 27, 2008

    Hi Dave,

I just recently discovered your show and I love it. I am one of these lurkers you sometimes talk about but I am trying to catch up to your shows *470+*!! Wow! Someday I watch 2-3, some days none. Anyhow – more to the point, I never had a Pinot Grigio before but I am planning on trying one in the next few days. We drink a lot of wine at home but mostly red since it is what we prefer. One small request Dave: what do you think about home wine making in general and using kits in particular? I realise they are not that good for your business but beyond that? If there is anything to say about it, it would be nice if you could do a show on this at some point. I recently started making some and I actually have a few batches going, none of which is yet ready to drink but we’ll see… Great show Dave – keep’em coming.

Nice Battle Royal today. Great to see both wines rock it out. I love me some wines from Alsace. Had a Trimbach one with some sauted sausage, potato, onions, and peppers with herbs and spice. Good easy meal that satisfies. QOTD: Sadly ive had nothing but cheap and crappy Pino (like Cavit…. yuck).
