  • Aged and Rounded
Tried the wine without food Friday and opened a second bottle with crab cakes on Sunday. The wine is better with food, but is very good in all instances. Would give it a 93 right now, but there seems to be slight chance this wine will actually improve with another year of aging. Will come back to it then.

  • thkorent
QOTD: I have lived in Friuli for 2 years when I was a lot younger. I have not enjoyed most of the wines I've tried then, but I think my palate has developed now. And even back then there were some efforts - most of them tocai or sauvs - that were just really enjoyable.
  • Jen
QOTD - No but I am anxious to find one now to try.
  • agentorange
    QOTD: Not yet.
  • MtnCharlie
QOTD: Yes, but I can't remember the producer. It was out of watching WLTV I was introduced. Thanks GV.
  • Colin Komar

  • Keith

  • wannaBconnoisseur
Q-No, but it is high on the list.
  • Lawrence Leichtman
How opportune. I watched this and it was on the wine list at the Compound in Santa Fe where I am right now. Had it with halibut and I and everyone at the table was blown away. $42 on the menu so @$18 retail it is a great deal. Hope it's not all gone.
  • MGM
QOTD: Yea, big fan of the Tocai Fruiliano, but never had that producer. I'll have to look for it, but I'm in Chi-town so not sure if it is even available out here. Any help with that?

PS- The region of Friuli brings the MAD THUNDER when it comes to Italian whites!
  • JayZee
QOTD: Sadly, no, I have not. I will have to rectify that shortcoming.
  • Rob P
Never tried one of these, but will definitely try to track one down. Good show!
  • Tommy Vernieri

  • teckdeck2008
qotd: never had a tocai before, i would try different varietals like that more often, but being in a small town selection sucks. and since my parents pay for everything still, i'm not allowed to buy wine off the internet. it sucks, but in a year max i'll be on my own, so i look forward to that day.
  • David Masi

    Gary,
I am currently serving in the US Navy stationed in the middle east. When I am not taking war fighters down range I am watching your show on my ipod. Love your show. It always brightens my day and keeps me motivated. You’re a great American. Keep it up. Ciao, Russ

Some news - Tokai, as Gary is saying, is changing his name, for avoiding any confusion with the Hungarians Tokajs (Aszù, that is botrytized and Furmint grape, for dry tokaj) .The new name will probably be simply TAI.
I know because i live very close to friuli.
    ciao a tutti
  • I've had lots of Tokay, Tokai, Tok-ee-doke... :-)
But I have never had a Tocai Friulano.
So, at $18 bucks a pop, I will try to seek one out!!!

(by the way, Gary--long time no see! I just got your book from Amazon, and it is so good that now I am committed to rejoining the flock and to catching up on all the episodes I've missed)
