qotd: Not a big sports fan, but having seen this with my Dad on dvd and hearing it referenced over the years many times, I’m going with the the 1958 National Football League Championship game on December 28th that went into sudden death overtime between the Colts and the Giants. Baltimore took what I’ve heard many times referred to as the single greatest football game ever played.

2002, in the last game of the regular season, two of the top rated high school hockey teams that are long time rivals were playing for a conference championship. I had coached players from both teams for several years on an off season select team. It was a very fast, extremely physical, hard fought game that ended with a 1 goal difference. While the rest of the players glared at each other and the fans continued taunting each other and the players, the kids I had coached met at center ice embracing, congratulating each other and reminiscing. Priceless!

GV: I think you’re going to have to update your thinking on what the demographics are for WineLibraryTV. We know it’s not age, but a mindset – but based on the comments I’ve read here, it should also include an a pitcher in a little league all star game.

I also fit this bill, and had a lot of similar experiences in baseball as well as other sports. However, the image I kept seeing when thinking back was not me, but my Dad. Everytime I thought about baseball, I saw my Dad in the backyard saying “come on now; pitch to the glove.” Or playing one-on-one basketball with me in the driveway with his homemade hoop attached to the garage. Thinking about it, he must have spent a billion hours palying some kind of ball with me. Can’t beat it.

Rookie 3B Ryan Zimmerman hits a two-run walk-off homerun to beat the Yankees and silence their many fans. Sweet.

Gary, fabulous that you will be in Rockville, MD on 26 June — see you then.

QOTD: My favorite sports moment comes from the 1994 Stanley Cup final, which, alas, my Vancouver Canucks did not win. But coming back from being down three games to the New York Rangers was pretty wild, the excitement peaking in game 6 in Vancouver. The Canucks were up 3-1 with just under 2 minutes left. Local boy (from Vancouver, that is) Geoff Courtall takes a pass, puts on the moves and backhands the puck high into the net, putting the Canucks up 4-1. But wait, the ref doesn’t signal a goal, and he lets play continue. The Rangers pull their goalie, and Mark Messier scores with about 50 seconds to go. Score 3-2 Vancouver. Plenty of time for the Rangers to score again. But wait again! A review of the Canucks “goal” is ordered, and the replay clearly shows Courtnall’s going in. The arena goes absolutely nuts. The clock is set back to the time of that goal, and the Canucks go on to win the game 4-1, setting up game 7 in New York. 14 years later I can still feel that moment. Sports drama at its best.

I tried Gavi last night and it was awesome. Thanks for helping me break out of my habits of just going with the traditional chard or gris.

Going a little selfcentered on this one, and am going to say my golf shots. Sticking the green from 185yds out with my five-iron. The feeling is great. However, last years superbowl was my favorite game of all time.

    No doubt the Mets/Jets/Knick champoiships.

GV, crazy, the day I watched the video (Friday 6/6) I went to a small Italian bistro in NYC (Il Bastardo) to celebrate life, and white wine was going to be ordered. The choices included a Gavi (which by the way was my “go to” wine on first dates when I was single), needless to say I suggested that the table try the Gavi rather than the “usual” pino grigio…well…4 bottles later…

You have a good (a la “Kid from Brooklyn”) gimmick going and it certainly gets people’s attention.

I would, however, appreciate your pronouncing the wines correctly: it is La Scolca not La Scola. In Italian, the ‘c’ before the ‘a’is not silent and it is pronounced like ‘k’.

I don’t think of sports when I drink wine…I think of food, travel, art, literature, oh yeah, and making love.I am obviously in the minority!

Good show – still don’t like the tease with the blind tasting.
Never had a Gavi that I can recall.
I will have to give it a whirl.

    Sports moments:
    – Hole in one in 1988
    – Scored 23 points in the town championship basketball game in a come from behind win.
    – Hit a grand slam when I was 15
    – Hit one out of the ballpark (315)
    – doubled to left center in my first ever attempt at switch hitting
    – Celtics winning the championship

I found a selection of about 6-8 Gavi’s locally… I picked up 3 different bottles for a party this weekend. I gave four options a Riesling (Schoffit ’01), chard (Elderton), Sancerre (Pascal Jolivet) and the Gavi’s. Its funny the Gavi went like hot cakes followed by the Sancerre. Most people started with the chard till everyone else was telling them how good the wine was. Good news was the Gavi was $10 and the Sancerre is closer to $20. Good call.

QOTD: Two actually. Both golf related. 1st was Nicklaus winning the ’86 Masters and 2nd was a hole-in-one I had several years back (6-iron, 186 yds.)…
