  • WFT is a Baller? Good episode, unusual and enthusiastic.

QOTD – Lagrein, nope, totally under the radar.

Nice show!!! I think it would have been cool if you spoke up more on the area these wines come from known as the Alto Adige. I think a lot of the V nation and the lurkers have probably had a pinot grigio from Alto Adige, or some other white wine that the area gets so much attention for. Point is, if some of you have a favorite producer in the area, there is a chance that they might make a lagrein. Two of my favorite are Alois Lageder and Elena Walch. Both make rockin whites but they also do the lagrein thing. There are also some cool blends out there too like Lagrein/Cabernet. Fun stuff and keep going with shows like this!!!

QOTD: I have had a Lagrein, 2005 Kupelwieser Lagrein Intenditore. I had it last summer, didn’t take any notes though. I don’t remember why I got it. I think that you had recommended some other grape from northeastern Italy and I went looking for it at Total Wine, they didn’t have it but they recommended the Lagrein instead.

Thank you for this episode and encouraging us to try something new! I watched the episode while I was riding the Tokyo subway home and decided to get off at one of the main stations to go hunting for a Lagrein. I found about 3 on the shelf to choose from and I must have looked funny in the store playing back the episode on my iPod while I tried to figure out if any of the wines on the shelf matched the ones you had reviewed. They turned out to be all different so I just grabbed one, took it home and the family loved it. Thanks again for the suggestion and keep the shows coming!

The only Lagrein that I’ve had is Caldaro Lagrein “Dunkel” 2005. As you said in this episode, it is a food friendly wine. It’s been a few months since I had it but I remember that it was nice. I will have to try some other producers to get a better well rounded opinion of this varietal. I had it along side an Aglianicco because I was doing my own little taste comparison. I liked to Aglianicco better but the Lagrein was nice. Thanks Gary!!

Never even heard of this wine before. My 21 month old daughter gave her spaghetti-o’s a sniffy sniff yesterday. She was so proud…it was hilarious.

Not a lurker. Actually, I haven’t missed an episode since I started watching 8 or 9 months ago. AND, this is definitely not my first comment.

QOTD: Never tried one… but I will!

Rookie ex-lurker here, as this is only my third comment. Yet another varietal I’ve never heard of! But thanks to you, Mr. Vay, my hubby and I have been expanding our pals and trying new things. We will put Lagrein on our list. Recent new reds (our preference) we’ve tried and liked a lot are Carmeneres and Tempranillos. Thanks for the tip!

Absolutely GREAT show!! QOTD: Here we go… I consider myself a pretty serioud wine geek. I have over 1,000 bottles in my cellar. I have tasted at least 60 varietals (and counting). I have NEVER had a Lagrein. I have never even HEARD of a freaking Lagrein. And THAT is why I love this show!!! Yes, I will definitely seek some out, although in Ohio, it may not be available since our wine selection is completely controlled by our big distributor network. Gee, I guess I could order some from Wine Lib. 😉

I don’t have the time to watch or reply to most of the shows, but the Lagrein struck a chord.
There was a grand tasting of Alto Adige last Feb. where I tried a dozen or more, in addition to other varietals grown there.

Castel Sallegg LG riserva 2003 very chicken farm /barnyard gary will like
Tiefenbrunner Linticlarus LG Riserva 2005 great nose, length and ripe tannins
H Lun LG 2006 Thin , but similar style to gary’s description
Cantina Terlano Porphyr LG Riserva 2005 noice nose, exc acidity great color
Brig lLG riserva 2005 light, reminded me of pinotage. under $15worth a try
Cantina Bolzano Perl LG 2005 very nice, and also a value about $20

Sorry for the late response, I’ve been unpacking at my new place in New Orleans (awesome place, but it took FORVER to get settled in!)… I’ve tried two Lagreins myself. Both would easily qualify as nice, “different” table wines that are something I’d drink just about any day. the better of the two was the 2003 Colterenzio Schreckbichl Lagrein Trentino Cornell Sigis Mundus. I gave it 89 points, though I might score it 87-88 if I tried it now. It was a bit oaky (nothing compared to cali wines I’ve had, but still, to my old world palate, a bit oaky), but not bad. Still, I haven’t had a Lagrein that has really knocked my socks off.
