Read an article about Kosher wine in WS the other day, very interesting the levels there were, especially in Israel, some sets of rules said only Jewsish people could handle the wine…making manpower a huge part of making the wine. Pretty wild stuff.

QOTD: Toss up between the Professor and MaryAnn, esecially because in the first season’s theme song they got Punk’d ♫”…The movie Star, and the rest! Here on Gilligan’s Isle!”♫ Put that in your beaker and decant it.

Good ep. How come you didn’t have Mott provide a different palate’s perspective on this wine? Just wondering.

QOTD : I was between about 9-12 when I was watching that show, so obviously it’s Ginger – those sequins really showed of her curves :) My nickname is even Ginger! (Totally unrelated, but never let the truth get in the way of a good story)

I love the show. But the “taste relativism” is getting a bit much. SOME WINES ARE BETTER THAN OTHERS. It’s NOT all subjective. Just as Beethoven is better than Haydn, or a hamburger is better than a pile of maggots. An 82 Petrus is BETTER than a 2006 Yellow Tail. Yes, people like things differently, and that’s what’s important when deciding what to drink, but at some point a wine expert has to be able to say, “Yes, this wine is better than that one.”

QOTD: How can I choose? Today I guess I’m most Professory.

    Awesome idea for the weekend.

@BF on “taste relativism” – some wine is good and some wine is bad. But within the giant universe of good wine, there’s a whole lot of preference, and I think that was Gary’s point. …also, did you just compare Haydn to a pile of maggots?

Happy weekend everybody. I’m going to go find someone to look up.

    QOTD:
Mary Ann would be at the top. Girl next door thing. She would have been good in Maxum. I liked the Professor for what he could invent and Gilligan for the “Who gives a sh*t” approach to most everything. I agree with bfrankphoto in that the professor never lost weight, but then again, neither has Hurley on Lost. Too many Papaya’s I think. Gotta stop, starting to digress.

    Liked them all actually.

Mary Ann… how could I resist the innocent farm girl persona? And Dawn Wells is a great person in real life too.

this wine is completely out of my price range so I’m not even tempted. Some recent memorable wines were my first Chilean Carmenere which smelled of smokey bacon, an Argentinian Melbac which smelled of pumpkin pie with fresh cream!!! and a Canadian Baco Noir which smelled like olive oil! Anyways as you point out its often hard to find some of the more obscure wines that you feature, maybe the mail order thing is in my future…

going to my cousins wedding tomorrow, so will see lots of people I havent seen in a long time.

I’m a little young for Gilligan’s Island, but I saw a decent amount of reruns when I was younger…so I’m just gonna go with the Professor.

    QOTD: Gotta go with Maryanne.

Getting ready to go to the local wine bar to see if they will display my wife’s wine themed paintings and have a couple of slurps. Oops some GG just slipped in there. Looking forward to the weekend. It is my Mother-In Law’s 90th Birthday. She still loves her red wine.

Don’t know. Ginger was sexy, the Professor was smart, Gilligan was goofy, Maryann was cute, the Skipper was, umm, the Skipper. All the parts were greater as a whole ensemble.

QOTD: I’ll go with Mary Ann as my favorite… though I’m still confused as to why she was on the “Three Hour Tour” in the first place. Somehow this young, single, girl from Kansas ended up marooned on a island in the Pacific with a bunch of people she had no apparent connection to. If this were Lost they would have needed four or five flashbacks to give us the reason.

  66. June 6, 2008

QOTD: Talk about the things that separate people and their tastes! This is one of the classics. Beatles or Stones? I’ll take the Beatles. Big Mac or Quarter Pounder? Give me the Quarter Pounder. Then… Ginger or Mary Ann? Mary Ann all the way for me baby!

  67. June 6, 2008

qod-easy! Thurston Howell lll. He drank, relaxed, and had boatloads of cash to have anything he wanted, including Ginger and MaryAnn. Actually maybe only Ginger, SHE could be bought, and hey, she was in Playboy. Great job on the last 2 episodes, Gavi and Lagrein!!! My suggestion again would be to quickly point these out on a map. To locate areas on a map only increases the interest.

QOTHD: Man…The professor was pretty badass…so I’ll go with him, though he never invented a way to get them off the island…so maybe it should be Ginger for hotness…nah the professor…If we were stuck on the island I’d make him help me make wine.

Now off to email my favorite Aunt and Uncle Paola and Gustavo in Sydney haven’t spoken to them in ages!

QOTD: The Professor. I liked Gilligan when he played the beatnik, Maynard G. Krebs on Dobie Gillis.

Thought you were going to have to send your favorite shirt to the dry-cleaners when you took a swig from the decanter. Luckily you weren’t lying down on the couch when you did it.

    QOTD— Gilligan of course

QOTD: hmm. who would I like stranded with or who do I think I’d like to be? Maybe it’s different answers. smile.
OK. so I like Ginger cause she is so shallow. And it’s the professor cause he is almost as smart as I’d like to be.

    hahahaha

qotd: the Professor, he knows the scoop.

BUT SERIOUSLY, Gary, I need resolution. Of course I’m talking about episode 477, or, as I will here on be referring to it as; Le mystère de l’épisode 377, Mystère et Intrigue dans le New Jersey. ” It’s killn me Gary. Grape flavors? No way!

Gary, let me tell ya… go over to your pals at Admiralty Wine and get some Tishbi Estate Winery Syrah or Single Vineyard Red Meritage(-esque)!

QOTD: Maryann’s a cutie, but I do enjoy the discourses of the Professor, and of Thurston Howell III as well.

Later man, have a good weekend!

  94. June 7, 2008

    Fangorn81

You know Gary, the first half dozen times I watched this program I thought you were saying “Ma” every time you said “Mott”.

It was like, what is the deal? This guy has his MOM tape him ranting about wine? Why is he always yelling at his mom?! Then when I found out you OWNED a huge wine store, I was like, there is no way that he has to have his MOTHER taping this, doesn’t he have some employees or something?

Of course, when I finally heard you talking ABOUT your mom TO Mott, I knew something wasn’t right. Then, FINALLY you said “Chris Mott” and I was like “OMG duh!” That is the guys last name!!!

Man I felt kinda stupid, but it was still funny. I think it was your accent that threw me off.

Oh yeah, QOTD: The professor. Bamboo was his muse.

  101. June 7, 2008

QOTD: I rather like the crazy straw that is your mind. Makes perfect sense to me. I’m gonna hafta go with the Professor-quiet, smart, easier on the eye than the other island offerings. Then again, Ginger……………..
    Have a goofy weekend.

I’m so glad you asked that question because NO ONE ever gives credit where credit is due: the island. My favorite character is the island. You can change Gilligan or anyone else but with out the island there would be no show. Thank you island.

    Lovin me some kosher wine.

QTOD – Mary Ann, of course.

Great show, good to see that the wine improved with its newer vintage.
QOTD I would have to say ginger because of her I refer to all redheads as gingers plus she was a very good looking women, close second would be the professor even though he did make all the stuff, but could never fix the boat

    GV,

My favorite character is from ‘The Producer’, which aired October 3, 1966. Phil Silvers played Harold H. Hecuba III, who wound up stranded on the desert isle (didn’t EVERYONE at some point) and had the castaways put on a presentation of ‘Hamlet’.

Gilligan: “I never said I was an actor”.

Hecuba: “When the great Harold H. Hecuba III says you’re an actor, you’re an actor”.

    Gilligan: “Okay, I’m an actor”.

Hecuba: “Believe me, you’re no actor”.

They don’t write ‘em like that, anymore…

  112. June 7, 2008

    Pete G

Way to get on the soapbox and preach it Reverend G – respect your “pal”!

QOTD: Was not a fan of the show. If I had to watch it I would focus on Ginger fo shizzle.

  113. June 7, 2008

    Malphas

Got my computer back up and running, so I missed a lot of the fun these past few weeks.

QotD: I think my favorite character from Gilligan’s Island would have to be either Gilligan himself, or the Professor. Everything happens to Gilligan, but it’s the Professor who started the whole “coconut tech.”

  114. June 7, 2008

    Nathan Stuart

Ya Gilligan always maid me laugh. But it never occurred to me that Mr. Howell probably had a great collection of wine! That was a good point Chris in Tulsa.

Off Topic, but just tried a 10 bone Aglianico called Ars Poetica – Vulcano.
Would love Gary to try it to tell me if this is an OAK MONSTER. I’m a newbie at this tasting stuff and I’d like to know if I’m right or not.

QOTD – Maryann is my favorite – I’m a sucker for the girl next door type !! :)

  116. June 7, 2008

QOTD-Ginger on Monday Wednesday Friday. Maryann Tuesday Thursday Saturday. Sunday compare stories with the Professor

  117. June 7, 2008

    Rebecca

The professor! He was most likely to figure out how to make some truly tropically, nutty vino.

  118. June 7, 2008

    Sharon

Wow, I haven’t seen that show in so long, I guess Ginger being Marilyn-esque is the most memorable for some reason. You’re so right about everyone’s tastes being different, and evolving, it’s so true.

  119. June 7, 2008

    Kristen

loved when you drank out the decanter…that was classy!

QOTD: Wow, I didn’t think the Professor would be so popular, but he was my favorite. And I agree with Rebecca, he’d definitely figure out how to make some wine (probably for the Howells).

    Solid episode!
I have a question to any vayniack that can answer it. I haven’t been into wine for long, but I’m wondering how do winemakers infuse different flavors (i.e. cherry, strawberry, apple, pear, pepper, truffles, etc.) into their wines?

    Thank you

    QQTD: Ginger

    MrJCG1

    Omar,

They don’t really “infuse” those flavors. The wine “triggers” the same taste buds that, say, a cherry would.

It’s quite similar to eating something for the first time and saying, hmmm, that tastes like (fill in the blank). Oh, I got a good analogy. The first time most people try frog’s legs, they usually say it tastes like chicken. But, we all know it’s not chicken.

Wine (well “real” wines) are made completely from grapes. The flavors come from grapes alone.

QOTD: The Professor. He lacked the hot pants that Ginger and Mary Ann wore, but he could fashion a radio out of a coconut. How cool is that?

QOTD: I have to go with the professor.

QOTD: I have to go with the Professor, too. I always thought he was handsome and super smart. If there’s anyone who’d get them off the island using coconuts and a little ingenuity, it was the Professor.

QOTD: Common every young guy had to like one of the ladies, Ginger or Mary Ann? Ginger was hot, but you knew she was high maintenance and it wouldn’t last, so Mary Ann it was…..:)

I’ve had this wine and for the money, get something else! There are so many great wines, but if you have to have Napa Valley, go with Bravante Vineyards Cab or their Trio. Each is about half of what this bottle cost.

QOTD: Overall, Mary Ann (come on!); the professor was cool — where did you think MacGuyver came from? — but if he could make an FM radio out of coconuts, why didn’t he make a cell phone out of a banana or a plane out of a palm tree and get them off the island?

  162. June 10, 2008

    Shawn

Gary, Gary, Gary. I feel a little disappointed that you felt like you had to explain yourself so much. That wine did not bring the thunder. At that price, and with that score(no matter how much you hate giving scores), that wine should not be purchased, unless you’re really curious.

    QOTD: I love redheads

Great friday show, eventhough i am watching it on Tuesday and would never i a million years spend $70 on that wine.

QOTD: Well, my wife actually owns the entire Gilligan’s Island series on VHS tape (go figure). And I certainly watched the re-runs on TV when I was a kid. I’d have to say that the Professor was my favorite character. Although, if he was so bright, you would have thought he could have devised some way to get off the stupid island!

As always good information, good show.

QOTD – When watching as an 8 to 10 year old loved Ginger and Mary Ann, now they all are pretty lame.

    QOTD: Mary Ann.

$72 for a 90 point kosher wine seems steep to me. I’m not sure how you can recommend it given the QPR.

I will be honest – just an OK show. I am not crazy about pricey wines, unless I am getting a true pedigree.

QOTD – Definitely Maryann. I would have loved to have found a nice cave on the island, opened up a bottle of elegant Burgundy, and ……..

  172. July 10, 2008

Nice to see the wine get a better score than the last one. Im sure its hard to deal with the hate mail, etc from wine drinkers and winemakers when you call it like it is. Thankfully you didnt have to slam them again. QOTD: I never liked the show. It was just goofy and I found it boring. I did like the professor, though.

  176. June 17, 2009

    looper

Somehow, I just don’t buy the 90 point score that you gave this wine. Seemed a little bit like lipservice.
Anyways, nice show, love the couch.
This was WLTV with a nice warm fuzzy message to it.
