QOTD: “The OTHER French Sparklers, ALL UNDER 20 BONES!”
    >>>Like you, I love sparkling wine almost as much as I love finding a value, and with Champagne being so branded and often pricey (sometimes regardless of quality), this ep. showcases French sparklers at reasonable prices, with no Champagnes.

Gary, I have a great idea for a show or shows. How about have a random employee of Winelibrary do a duo with you. Intro them a little, where they are from, what they do, how long they have been there, and then ask them to taste wines with you and be honest about what they sniffy sniff and taste. What they like and don’t like.

I would love to see more of Winelibrary peeps as well as get a view point from younger palettes. They could even give it an amateur score of like 89+ or whatever.

Good luck Gary and congrats on joining Revision 3. I love those guys and watch their shows all the time.

    Woody Wednesday

Woodward Canyon Old Vine Cabernet Sauvignon 2004

:( That is the only woody wine you have in stock. bummer.

Too bad you don’t have the 2004 Leonetti Reserve and Quilceda in stock.

That would be insane with a big thick juicy rib-eye and some flourless chocolate cake.

    gary,

ok, maybe i’m the only one who feels this way, but…i think the whole ordeal with the missing ending wasn’t that big of a deal. in fact it was kind of fun. i like a little spice.

my advice, don’t worry about that one…come out swingin tomorrow!

“To air is human – to forgive the wine….”
How about evaluating 1 wine (your choice), pop and pour, breathing in bottle 1,4, 8 hrs and overnight. Decanting? How does breathing & decanting change a wine?

QOTD: Dan’s Aussie (Non-Barossa) wines that bring the thunder!

Gary, you promised me in an email a few months ago that you’d do a show on lesser known Aussie wines. Something other than Barossa Shiraz, so here it is… ok The last wine has some Barossa shiraz in it but is a multi regional blend… and it’s my fave big big red so lay off me! :)

    Pewsey Vale Riesling 2006

Never had this before but… 91points WS for 12 bones. I’ll let you be the judge.

    Tyrrell’s Semillon Vat 1 2000
    http://winelibrary.com/reviewwine.asp?item=37957
Not exactly rocking the QPR but this would be a good example of what Aussie Hunter Valley Semillon has to offer. This is the only one i can find in your stock.

    Paringa Sparkling Shiraz
    http://winelibrary.com/reviewwine.asp?item=29960
This one’s for you Gary… I know you love the bubbles and we down here like to think sparkling shiraz is a bit of an Aussie classic! Also from one of my fave regions… the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria, this wine is all about the QPR!

    Penfolds Cab/shiraz Bin 389 2005
    http://winelibrary.com/reviewwine.asp?item=37276
My favourite BIG Aussie red, the “Poor Man’s Grange” comes in at a crazy 25bones in the US! We pay double that over here!

    Hi Gary

    Great show; thanks.

QOTD: What wines would I like to see presented on tomorrow’s show?

Now one thing that gets me at times is the constant slagging of Australian wines as big, but simple fruit bombs. Now I can’t deny that this isn’t true at times (and you could perhaps argue that the American export market is at times driving the production of this style), BUT generalising about Australian wine like this is a great miss-justice. I live in Hong Kong and don’t drink that much Australian wine here, but most of the wines I buy for my ‘cellar’ back home in Australian are not Fruit bombs and are not South Australian Shiraz. Australia has a diverse range of different wine regions producing unique and distinctly different wines.

So I was going to suggest a show on one of Australia’s lesser know regions – perhaps Tasmanian Sparkling, Yarra Valley Pinot or Hunter Shiraz (med bodied, dry and earthy; just like I assume you’d like!). I looked through the Wine Library catalogue for the first time and was pretty disturbed to find that so many wine styles and regions were represented.
    No Coonawarra Cabernet!
No Mornington or Yarra Valley Pinot Noir!
    No Tasmanian Sparkling!
    No high quality Hunter Shiraz!
    No Grampians Shiraz!
No Marsanne (oldest plantings in the World)!
Only one Rose (why no Turkey Flat when you stock their other wines?)!
Only one Rutherglen Fortified (some of the best value fortifieds in the world)!

So my suggestions highlight some of Australia’s contributions to the World’s fine wine that aren’t bold South Australian Shiraz (A STYLE WE DO WELL BUT IT”S NOT ALL WE DO!!!!)
    Here goes:
    1) Morris – decent Rutherglen fortified – http://winelibrary.com/reviewwine.asp?item=17338
    2) Tyrrell’s Vat 1 – a decent Hunter Semillon – http://winelibrary.com/reviewwine.asp?item=37957
    3) Mt Mary – a decent Yarra Valley Cabernet – http://winelibrary.com/reviewwine.asp?item=33259
    4) Cullen – a decent Margaret River Cabernet – http://winelibrary.com/reviewwine.asp?item=35241

    5) A sentimental favourite; Pikes Riesling – http://winelibrary.com/reviewwine.asp?item=9685

    Cheers
I hope the above wasn’t too much of a rant :)
    Andrew

    I was going to say – the 3 best lo-alcohol ’school-night’ wines…

but then I saw such a thing as ‘vinho verde’ red and I’m fascinated.

I see that a bunch of other people asked for wines from Sardinia, from Greece, from Lebanon and from Israel. Although I like my original idea of choosing one from each country, I would be happy to see a whole episode on each country separately (although you recently did an Israeli show).

Never a dull moment on the show. Don’t get your knickers in a twist over what some have to say. Keep your eyes on the prize-changing the wine world.
QOTD: A salute to Canucks-Okanagan wines, Canadian Icewine, Riesling etc. A Great White North show would be appreciated.

I wish you had a Turkish wine too. There are a whole bunch of fancy new Turkish, Greek and Lebanese restaurants opening in NYC (Pera, Kellari, ilili), and they seem to be proud of each others’ wines. Even even the Turkish restaurants have Greek wines, and the Lebanese restaurants have Israeli wines.

Hi Gary. QOTD – 1. How about a show on old wines – literally the oldest vintages that you can find, well outside their drinking windows?
    2. Also not sure if you’ve done it but Sardinian Wines? 3. Also wine packaging – a show on wines out of the heaviest bottles in the store in terms of weight and asking why wineries need to use unnecessary amounts of packaging to stand out (environmental angle/wines supposed to be big and powerful but actually aren’t) etc. etc.

Thanks for the link to the blind tasting episode. Was interesting to see the other 5 and how they ranked.

Congratulations on doing a tough job well.
