I have had the ‘04 Ciro, and I definitely got the tomato component, but I actually don’t like tomato flavors in my wine so much, I have discovered. I had the ‘98 Travaglini, and it didn’t kill me, but was better than the ‘03 sounded. I also have an un-opened ‘01 Antoniolo Gattinara (though not the single vineyard) in my cellar.

Love the Librandi (yes, I’ve had it and gone back for more). And nice shade of link-it-up blue on the cake there.

You know, I feel bad, I didn’t have anything good for a show yesterday, almost feel like I let you down.

How about this, though: go for the Friday three-peat. New Noblaie, on the couch. You know you want to.

QOTD 2: Nope- jobs, dates, and $$ do not add up to SF trip, darn it.

Fun and wacky show! Will definitely try the Antoniolo if I can come across it.

QOTD #1: The Mott-ster is 44…he couldn’t have turned 40 while taping the Thundershow or we definately would have heard about it previously.

QOTD #2: No, there will be no sighting of me at the San Fran partay. You need to throw a party back at the Wine Library or in NYC and I will sooooo be there!

  58. June 11, 2008

    Happy birthday Mott.

    Mott is 43

Wish I could, but my trip to NYC in 2 weeks is breaking the bank.

  61. June 11, 2008

    JR

QOTD: Mott has got to be between 44 and 49 otherwise we would have heard about the significance of a 40 or 50. So ill go 47.

Damn, Italy is a confusing place wine-wise. Hard to get one’s head around all the difffereent regions and DOC DOCG IGT etc etc. Shambles.

Awesome episode though. I would love to get more understanding of Italy

  62. June 11, 2008

    lurkerking

    Gary,

Long time listener, first time caller. Good show. Love when you have some of the more “obscure” wines out there, especially when they turn out to be somewhat accessible… well except where I am at the moment (PA), thanks to some rather silly liquor laws.

Speaking of, last weekend I was in Piscataway, which I came to learn is very near The Wine Library. So I decided to check out the store on the way and stock up on a *ton* of wine (of course I did not transport this over state lines, etc. etc.). Your staff was *incredibly* helpful. I handed them a list and they found me the wine I was looking for (most of it, anyway) about 10x faster than I would have been able to do it myself.

One of the many wines on my list was the Walnut Crest cab, which you can actually get in PA but not the 750ml. Just wanted to try it, like everything else on my list, because I’ve totally been suckered into your “experience everything” mentality with wine. Much to my surprise, I got a little bit of “do you *really* want the Walnut Crest?” attitude. Yes, I’m sure; that’s why it’s on the list.

I was a little taken back by the implication that my taste in wine was a little off (even though in reality I have never tried the WC cab). I know you say you aren’t really involved in the day-to-day of Wine Library as much anymore, but as the visionary of what that place is supposed to be about, I thought you might want to know that not all the troops seem to have the message of what you’re trying to do.

If nothing else, it got me to stop lurking!

    Have it your way,

    LurkerKing

  63. June 11, 2008

    Dominus

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOTTSTER!

    QOTD #1: I will guess 45?

QOTD: #2″ I may make Aug 9 since it falls on a weekend. As Brian says, bring your enthusiasm down south on the “East” coast.

P.S. I still believe the Alpha, Bucklin and Dom show would have kicked those Italian wannages.

  64. June 11, 2008

    Palmer

    happy 49th, Mott!

6 pm in San Fran on a Thursday? tough for us L.A. guys, but we’ll see…

  67. June 11, 2008

I thought you, or somebody, said a couple of weeks ago that Mott was 46, which would make him 47. Or maybe I’m hearing things.

QOTD II: No, I live on the East Coast and hate that flight to the West coast….

  68. June 11, 2008

Herzlichen Glueckwuensch zum Geburtstag, Herr Mott!!
As to your age sir, I’m going with 29. Very diplomatic.

  70. June 11, 2008

    Ryan W

    QOTD – Mott happy 39th B-Day

QOTD2 – I would love to show up, but it is probably too much right now with me buying a condo in the next few months. July 9th is my b-day, so that would be a great bday gift for me.

As for Monday’s show. I requested to see the ending just because I hate not knowing how everything fared, but I don’t think anything less of you Gary V for not wanting to show it because you are definitely a straight shooter.

    Word up,

    Ryan

  71. June 11, 2008

    tnfdude

Awesome! Thanks, GV, for doing a show based on my suggestion! I’m glad at least one of the bottles rocked it out. I had a bottle of the 01 Travaglini at Barolo in Seattle, it’s definitely a wine that needs food. Thanks again!

    Happy B-day Mott!

Gotta check my work schedule but 99% sure I’ll make it. Thanks for showing the West Coast fans some love. And thanks for picking the best city in Cali to party in!!

  74. June 11, 2008

    Newman

QOTD: Courtesy of Douglas Adams, the answer is 42.

QOTD2: Can’t be done, as the U.S. has an absurd drinking age.

On another note, I thought I’d let you know I bought yellotail shiraz the other day. Why oh why would I do such a thing? I had never had yellowtail or shiraz yet, and therefore it qualified as expanding my palette. I also wanted to know what all the fuss was about. I’ve got to admit I’m not a huge fan. Waaaay too much oak and vanilla.

  75. June 11, 2008

    Martin

What was that background music? A great Italian wine and no food pairing suggestions?! Partying in San Fran would be a awesome but it will have to be just a dream this year. Happy birthday! Are you 45?

  76. June 11, 2008

    Withnail

QOTD1: Guess Mott is 38. (He reminds me of a friend who is 36.)
QOTD2: Won’t make it to SF. I lived there for 4 & 1/2 years but can’t visit then.
    I hope #500 is an hour-long episode.

    Hoyun

QOTD1 – 37?? Happy Birthday to you good sir!

QOTD2 – Sadly I will not be making it to either. First I’m not 21. Second, my moneys going towards a volunteering trip to Iceland. But believe you me, I’ll get some wine tasting done in Iceland!

Happy B-day Mott. QOTD – Dunno – 45? I suggest going with my mothers theory, she’s 39 forever, even if she was born in 1926.

QOTD 2 – West Coast – sorry dont think I will be able to make it unless work calls for it.

Good show, I would like to learn more about the Italian wines.

  88. June 11, 2008

Happy Birthday Mott! Like me, I believe he is 39 and Holding. Well, I doubt I can go to SF now, but maybe that OWC wine blogger thing in Oct is doable, I’m thinking about it.

Bonarda and Charbono, I’ll have to remember those are the same thing. I think I’ve only had Charbono from the west coast in blends.

    QOTD 1: Happy Birthday, Mott! I’m guessing you’re 49.
QOTD 2: Gary, I’ll be in San Fran. in July, but on the wrong week. Too bad! When are we doing the Vayniac Cab release party? I’m going to make a special trip for that one. You better host a big party out there.

I’ve had Gaglioppo, that one! Actually I’m the only one with a review for that wine in CellarTracker right now. I picked it up from you (with free shipping) because Dr. Debs wrote about the previous vintage. I didn’t get the interesting finish you got, but I did enjoy it. It was perfect for the broccoli, chicken, and mushroom casserole that we had. We were looking for a light red wine and that hit the spot.

MOTT at 43! Still going strong!

No way I am driving 14 hours south even for a great party and overwhelming amounts of good vino. But thanks for the invite.

All I have to say is HELL YES! This is the episode I have been waiting for. Honestly, Gary has an overwhelming personality and his human side comes out when he is dealing/talking to other people. The fact that he had Mott come in front of the camera was brilliant. I LOVED IT. I also like having a younger palette to counter balance the expertise of Gary. I have an extremely young palette and could learn a lot from having someone like me have their comments referenced to an experts like Gary’s. This gives me a reference point. LOVED IT and happy birthday Mott.

    SF? Hell yes
Todays epi? good one with two new wines I’m unfamiliar with, last one sounds GREAT.

I am with the 42 crowd. Mott good job showing Gary how to drink wine! So I will try to clear my calendar for the 7/10 party. Gotta plan some customer visits in the Bay Area around then.

Not that I am one to point out others mistakes that much since I make plenty of them myself, but just a little note for those new to the Bay Area. They don’t much care for having the City by the Bay referred to as “Frisco”. Something to keep in mind if you are trying to be polite and fit in when you are there. No big deal though in any case.

Aw Man, I don’t think I can do either date in SF. A Thursday in July is nearly impossible, and Aug 9 is BarCampHouston. :( I will be there in spirit, and will maybe see you in Houston again?

Forgot to guess… Mott is 44? I just like the sound of 44 :)

Gary I don’t know where to go to buy a Wristband. There was no buy wristband link in the Schwag section and I also responded to your Seesmic and haven’t recieved a sticker yet either (coolest sticker ever BTW), keep up the good work with your show and can’t wait to see you on Revision 3.

So has Mott made legal drinking age yet. I kid 42 is my guess. I have had the Ciro many times but did not know it wasn’t Sangiovese. Disappointed in the Travaglini as that is the Gattinara I can get here and I have bought it for over 20 years. wasn’t ‘03 the really hot year in Italy? Will have to get a few bottles of the Antonio as it sounds great. Won’t be in SF as I live 2700 miles away and while both parties sound great at the price of plane fare and gas expense in CA, not likely to happen.

    Interesting contrast:

    TRAVAGLINI GATTINARA 2003

This wine made the Wine Spectator’s Top 100 wine list in 2007.

“Has lots of dried flowers and very ripe fruits, with a Christmas pudding undertone. Full-bodied, with chewy tannins and a long, rich finish. A little Port-like, but rich and impressive. This is consistently delicious. Best after 2010. Score – 91.” (James Suckling, http://www.winespectator.com, Dec. 15, 2007)

Maybe you had an off bottle?

QOTD: Mott is 43. That’s my guess. :-)

Glad to see the DNA is still working for you.

QOTD: I thought you said at the beginning of the show that Mott was 50. But I like Oscar Wilde’s quote about women, and maybe it applies to men too: “No woman should ever be quite accurate about her age. It looks so calculating.”

    QOTD1: I’m guessing 48.

QOTD2: Yes! Yes and yes! I live in SF, saw the pics from last year’s event, and I can’t wait to head out to Fort Mason to meet all you Vayniacs and hang with Gary. (Don’t forget drink some great wine.)

On a side note, last time I was at Fort Mason was for Oktoberfest, and it was downright terrible. A horrible event planned for about 1,500 when really about 5,000 people showed up. I’m sure this one will be much more enjoyable.

    Cheers!

QOTD 2. Oh, I wish I could make it, but can’t.

Say, Gary, have you ever done a show on Teroldego Rotaliano? It comes from the same neck of the Italian woods as the Lagrein you did a show on just a few days ago. I like the shows on obscure Italian grapes. (And there are sooooo many of them.)

    Gary,

After your review of the Antonolio I had to buy a few to see if the WA91 was too low or your 94+ was too high. Since I generally don’t trust WA on Italians, I’m hoping you’ve got it right. This could be one of the best values of the year if you are.

QOTD 1: 46 for the Mottster.

Gary (and Mott), this former lurker wants to say to you, I love your podcasts and what you’re doing, please keep up the good, no great, work.
Re: the Crushpad event on August 9, I didn’t see any “link it up” info or anything on the Crushpad site, crushnet etc., or maybe I’m just looking but not seeing ? Ooh, getting kind of deep…anyway, thanks and if you can be of help on the details of that’d be great.

    Cheers!

    Happy birthday Mottster!
I would guess that you are in your high 40s – 48 years old.

I won’t be able to make the SF bash.

I really like the Gattinara’s and I am hapy to see a review of wines other than Travaglini from this region

Is it me or do I here a Coldplay song in the background while Mott is holding up his cake? Could someone else turn up the volume and give a listen and let me know if I’m crazy?

Ok. Tried the Antoniolo last week. Definitely better than the 91 Parker gave it, but not sure about 94+. A solid 93 in my book and it might hit 94 with a few more years on it side. Bought several bottles, so will come back to it.

I had a ‘95 or ‘97 Travaglini back in 2003, and it was quite possibly the best wine drinking experience I’ve ever had – like smooth cherry and strawberry velvet, and was thick on the palette. So I’m rather disappointed that the 2003 was thin and wasn’t very good. Maybe 2003 wasn’t a very good growing year? Hopefully the 2004 will be better.

Happy birthday, Mott! Nice to see you get some camera time and sit down with Gary. Also nice to see you liking more and more reds. Train that palate! QOTD1: I believe Mott is 42. QOTD2: Obviously past the time, and probably wouldnt have been able to anyway with work and whatnot.
