I’m bookmarking this cause I live in Half Moon Bay, only a short drive from some of these wineries. Gary, you ever gonna tour the Santa Cruz wineries? If so, I’m SO THERE!

QOTD: My most unique characteristics, in comparison to the people around me, are my passions. While most of my friends like beer, video games and high contact sports, I am a wine drinking, magazine/book reading, cyclist who does what other people don’t.

Keep bringing the thunder Gary, and HOW IN THE WORLD DO I GET THE NEXT GENERATION WRISTBAND, PLEASE?!?!?!?!

QOTD- I don’t think I share any of my characteristics with anyone I know! ha
    I’m just unique in general.

Drinking a Valpolicella right now. There’s a crazy sweetness going on- beyond fruity. Like candy. Like those fizzy cola bottles, you know the ones? This is interesting but I’m not sure I like it! It’s all in the spirit of trying new wines though, Thanks Gary! All my favorite wines still come from France though!
Never even tried one from the U.S.A! (Don’t worry, I’ll get around to it! I a new wine drinker.)

    Gary… BOSTON RULES!
Just started watching this amazing show, and I am trying to pick up on the episodes I’ve missed so far.
HOW DO I GET A WRIST BAND???

Also, tip for a future show: South American wines. I know there are great wines in Chile and Argentina, but you have to try some of the Brazilian wines out there. Just a suggestion…

QOTD: My eyes change color according to the light. Blue-green-gray. My forehead won’t stop growing.

Funny that you mention dandelion. I have a dandelion wine fermenting right now, sadly I won’t get to try it for at least another year.

QOTD: one of those rare American Formula One fans, Wine for the qualifiers and big barley wine or double IPA for the race.

  31. June 19, 2008

    Sonnenuhr

I’m getting really bored with many CA wines. Overoaked fruit-bombs with absurd alcohol levels. All thanks to Robert Parker, who has done more damage to wine than phylloxera.

PS Having a Bordeaux wine tasting and Robert Parker book burning this weekend!

  32. June 19, 2008

    purplejuicebruce

Yea Santa Cruz Mtns I used to live in San Jose and drive the Mountain to Santa Cruz almost every weekend. I have only tried one wine from there Savannah Chanelle Monmartre Alc. 16.9% couldn’t tell it was wonderful.
Qotd My proclivity to Petite Sirah!

  33. June 19, 2008

    Lawrence Leichtman

Like you, I’m not a fan of these over the top wines. I will be in Santa Cruz next months so I will give them a visit. The question you asked is what other people should say about you not what you say about yourself.

QotD: I would say my most noticeable unique characteristic is the fact that I’m tall. Most unique, though, is probably my singular inability to determine my own truly unique characteristics.

Great show today, way to call it like you see it, even if those wines would probably be right up my alley.

EpiOsode [sic] #489? Somebody should check the spelling… :-)

Main characteristic? Well, great respect for reason over emotion, except in wines, of course…

I’m glad you gave Clos La Chance a chance.

QOTD: Others seem to feel that my most unique characteristic is that I have a lot of curly/wavy brown hair. I think my most unique characteristic is my piercing intuitive perspicacious nature. Must be the DNA.

Hey Gary, thanks for the show today.

Gotta give Mott props, that was nice camera action. I liked the kinda chill episode today after yesterdays Thunderama- nice changeup. Thanks for the show!
Qotd: My over the top, complete, and utter devotion to reggae music. I dont like the reggae music…I LOVE the reggae music!!

  50. June 19, 2008

    Kirk (aka: slave2thevine)

I would say that one of my most unique attributes is that I am a controlled storm of emotion and poise. I have been told that the clarity, calm, and ease of speech that I share my concerns or frustrations can be frustrating. I use passionate vocabulary and thoughtful meaning…but a calm, soothing voice.

  51. June 19, 2008

    pawncop

Enjoyed the episode and the education.

My most unique feature, I guess my bald little head. And my scathing wit.

  52. June 19, 2008

    Palmer

QOTD: my ability to foster friendships with people across a wide spectrum of completely disparate groups – and bring them all together. “a genius of random people”

On the white, if it’s a little sweeter than Kix… Honeycomb cereal is sorta in between Sugar Smacks and Kix. Give it a nibble. I’ve had some wines that are sort of cereal-y and Honeycomb usuallly matches up with the flavor well. A little sweet, grainy like Kix, but not overwhelming and toasted like Sugar Smacks.

By the by, sorry again I couldn’t make it down to Boston tonight after all your warm invitation! I haven’t been staying in touch so it came up rather suddenly. Feel free to come visit us in New Hampshire, too, I feel pretty comfortable speaking for my fellow New Hampster-ites in saying we would love to have you and I’ll strongarm every wine drinker I know to come, to boot! :)

Gary thanks you so much for so many good times! Entertainment. I love Indian food and want anybody to help me out for a great wine pairing with such strong “over the top” taste that India brings to the table. Cheers

    Dominus

Good show and glad you were honest, as always.

QOTD: Unique characteristic? Unique to whom? If I had to describe myself, I would say it has to be my unbridled passion and commitment to those who treat me with respect and love.

P.S. Having the Rasina Brunello right now. I’m sure it would have spanked the Chance Meritage, Quite nice.

A week from todayyyyyyyyyy I get to meet the G-Man. :)

Hey Gary, the Sugar Smacks mascot was Sugar Bear – not a frog! Honey Smacks was the one hawked by a frog – “Dig ‘em” Frog to be exact.

QOTD: My most unique characteristic has to be my humility. I’m proud to be humble. :)

I love that fact that even though you know the folks who own the winery are fantastic people, that doesn’t influence your rating of the wines. Honesty is the best policy!

i would do the third thirsty thursday if I had friends who drank wine a lot. But I don’t, although there is a wine tasting at a wineshop just down the road every thursday. So once I do get that crowd, its a garauntee i’ll have something to do.

qotd: i’m a very loyal friend, sometimes I think too loyal because I’ll get burn by it. the most recent occassion was a buddy of mine completely trashing my apartment because he had too much to drink on a night right before an exam in one of my classes. needless to say he’s not allowed back in my apartment. but I do think it is one of my better qualities if I don’t get too carried away.

So just got back from a formal tasting as a guest with a wine club that has been at it for 23 years. Great guys. Double blind tasting. I guessed west coast cabs and they were cab merlot blends from Washington. The 2005 Walla Walla Spring Valley Uriah got my highest score. Killer.

My most unique characteristic might be the number of hobbies and sports I pursue. I want to do a lot of things. Not someone who wonders what I will do when I retire!

Great to see Santa Cruz on your show. When I grew up there 40 years ago (am now in Western NY) there were no grapes. The hills were alive with another cash crop that you might give a sniffy sniff to but would not drink…

  97. June 20, 2008

    Bruce

My aura is my most unique characteristic. Hey, I’m west coast, not far from the Santa Cruz Mnts.in fact. Yes it is my unique aura…can you see it?…can you see it now?

Our Third Thirsty Thursday tasting group (that meets on Friday) was moved from this Friday to next, but we’ve met each month since March. We were total strangers at the start- pretty cool.

Interesting to hear about an area and winery I’m unfamiliar with. Fun show. Mott is so under appreciated…

QOTD: Unique implies one of a kind, so I guess my only truly unique characteristic would be my DNA… ;)

  99. June 20, 2008

    Great show!

QOTD: My unflinching objective realism. Even if it’s something I really don’t want to see/know, if it’s true, I see it. And even if it’s something I really do want to see, if it’s not there I don’t see it. I’m insanely perceptive. My blessing and my curse!

Great show – please keep rockin’ the T-Shirts – they’re really fun!

QOTD: I don’t know if there’s one particular characteristic that makes me unique, more the combination that does it. I’m a mining engineering student who plays the fiddle/violin and enjoys water polo.

QOTD That I tend to use my emotion to decide whether something is right or wrong rather than my brain

  106. June 21, 2008

That’s such a funny anecdote about Michael Irvin. It’s great how you can think of these things off-the-cuff. I don’t know that I can do that! My most salient characteristic is curiosity. I am curious and inquisitive. Did you know that Irvin is one of 17 children? I was curious and looked him up :-) .

  107. June 21, 2008

    jason

good show today. maybe it was not as ’spectacular” as the other days “mailing list” show, but none the less. it is a show of a small house producing wines that are of the track a bit. maybe i am just out of touch and everyone knows these wines. it is not where i play.
QOTD: whit, humor, insight loyalty. sorry for a few, but what can i do. it is a wine blog, not my final exam.

  108. June 21, 2008

    The Doc

QOTD – my honesty in all aspects of life, which is sometimes also my downfall.

  109. June 21, 2008

    Harry

Nice show. Perhaps its my chameleon-like ability to pick up on accents. I speak like whomever i’m speaking to – in several languages. My Spanish in La Paz is different than in Lima (although crappy in either locale) as is my English in NYC or Mississippi. It can prove handy sometimes, but troublesome others.

Thanks for the kind words Gary. Even though we didn’t get 90’s, we appreciate your feedback and thank you for taking the time to devote a whole episode to Clos LaChance. What an honor!

We hope you will continue to taste future vintages of these wines (espeically the Meritage. 2004 was the first off a vineyard we planted in 1999. We are excited about the quality now….and are REALLY excited about the upcoming vintages. And to put us in the same category as Insignia and Cakebread. That is a huge compliment for us.

Have a great upcoming trip to the West Coast, congrats on your 500th episode.

The latest from Clos LaChance–we are battling a big wildfire last night and today. Winery is evacuated and closed until further notice. My blog has pics.

    Cheers, Chery, Clos LaChance Wines

Don’t spill the wine on the camera!!!!!!!!!
QOTD- Even keeled and great under pressure and I only worry about what I think can be changed. If not it is not worth the mental strain and anguish being upset about it because it is not going to change.
Unlike the wine world, which you are changing.

    Interesting show again, Gary.
I have to admit, I have been following WLTV for maybe a little over a month now, and after watching maybe 40 or 50 episodes, have sensed that you have a bit of a bias against Cali wines! I respect your palate and your individual tastes though, since “being true to one’s pal” is the most important thing you’ve taught us!

QOTD: If you were to ask my girlfriend she would probably say that I think a loooooot/way-too-much about everything. In my defense, I always say it’s better to think too much than too little (right? hehe).

Sorry, to clarify my last statement- I misphrased that; I don’t believe you have a “bias,” which would mean you unfairly approach Cali wines when you taste them; rather that it seems you’re not so often taken by them as you may be with wines of other countries (like Portuguese wines as of late, etc.) Although I remember you raving about that Black Owl (whatever the name of that wine with the owl on it was) red wine a couple weeks back- really made me wanna try it!

I was just at this Winery on Saturday, and had not seen this show.
The Hills right in front of the Vineyard were on fire. Really! We had a freak lighting storm roll through and the hills were on fire all over the place. The fire trucks and bulldozers rolled up the hill as we sipped the wine. I felt like getting out the fiddle.

Fun fact: I proposed marriage to Sharon at this very winery about 18 months before. And we were married in July 2007, so I am fond of the winery.

Thank Gary for allowing these folks on the show.

OH! I love the wineries in the Santa Cruz Mountians. There are many fine wineries in the area.

Thanks for the mention Gary, but San Saba is located in the Salinas Valley near Soledad–the vineyard is pushed up against the Santa Lucia Highlands. Please come visit us.

Decent show. I am not a fan of the “one winery” preview, but I understand why you do this.

QOTD – My most unique characteristic is the fact that I have virtually bright orange hair. I met you at the Boston Wine Expo and if you remembered me, then you would simply by the striking hair color.

“unique”. Meaning “not like others”. I’d have to say my prolific sweat glands. I’d be amazed if I ever met anyone who sweats more than I.

    Val Ahlgren

    Hi Gary,
Finally tuned in to your show and searched Santa Cruz Mountains. A note about Clos la Chance: It is not in the Santa Cruz Mountains nor are any of the wines you tasted on the show from grapes grown in the SC Mts. They are, however members of the Santa Cruz Mts. Winegrowers Association.
Would love to send you samples of Santa Cruz Mts wines grown and made here in this really fascinating appellation. How can I get Ahlgren Vineyard samples to you, not having distribution in NJ?
    Incidentally, real
