Oh Yeeeeeeah, finally a VA wine that might bring the thunder, but for 28 bones it might still be a hard sell. I think that is the major down fall for most of the dominions wines, they are just overpriced because of the economics of the small production. Linden is one of the few bigger wineries I have not tried yet, so maybe next we are headed that way to see the folks we will give them a try.

QOTD: Nothing, VA is already made a few appearances.

GaryV – too bad on the Basignani, you must have a bad bottle. I’ve had a number of their cabs from previous vintages (not 2005), and they have consistently decent. Yes you can find plenty better at 20 bones – but I’ll have one once in a while to support the local guy.

Parker also talked up Basignani years back in his newsletter. Said he wouldn’t give numbers, because Bert was a friend (Parker lives nearby) – but Parker did plug the wines as respectable, almost certainly the best reds in MD.

I don’t get by your store very often – maybe twice a year – but I’ll try to bring a better example with me next time.

Wish I could send you a few local wines, but it is legal to do so? Might be a hard sell to the wineries, when some others did show too well

Are your figures from Outer Limits?

Always wonder how members of the Vaynerchuk family cringe in anticipation of Gary’s approval/disapproval of a new dish or gift or recommendation.
Surprised no one has sent anything in from Arizona. Not impressed with the stuff I’ve tried here but there’s always a first time. Fun show.

I think I’m going to go hang out with my buddy Chris at the winery in Tularosa, New Mexico, this weekend. I’ll pop you off some bottles (I know I said I would before, but things happened!) Is there anything special that you want Gary? Check the website if you so desire and I’ll send it out to you, if not, I’ll make up my own mind what you want!

QOTD: At 32 you’ve got time to wait for these newbies to get up to speed but some of us, who are slightly more age advanced, know that there plenty of supplying countries and states that are already delivering the goods. So, I’ll encourage my kids and grandkid, when he comes of age, to experiment but not myself :) It’s already like, “So many wines, so little time.”

Hey Gary. Good show. Being in the DC/MD/VA area, I’m able to enjoy some good locally grown and produced wines. I’m glad to see you have a Linden wine. I love their wines, and the vineyard is a great place to visit.

I went to a wedding that was in a round barn at a winery in Michigan. I think…and this is a real stretch, it was called “The Round Barn Winery”. The place was really pretty, and the wedding fantastic but the wines…well, they weren’t terrible. But I hear some Michigan wines are really good. You should do an Idaho show also.

I liked this episode. For VA wines, I’ve had some nice ones, the best being one called “Octagon” from Barboursville Vineyards.

I’m a Pennsylvanian so I can’t recommend something from the “other 43″ (I’m really curious about Alaskan wine) but I would recommend another PA winery: J. Maki (French Creek Ridge). Wicked good sparkling wines and what I’ve had of their still wines I prefer to Chaddsford.

I will have the Linden tonight as my son sent me a bottle from a DC wine shop. The Basignani was served to me at a friends in Baltimore as the best wine in Maryland. I politely told him it wasn’t my style while pouring my glass into one of their house plants. I never asked if I killed the plant but that stuff could have. Haven’t had any PA wine to date.

QOTD: I’m waiting to taste some decent wine from SC. I visited Irvin-House Vineyards about 30 minutes from where I live and the tour they gave was awesome–got to punch down some grapes and walk in the vineyard–but Muscadine is just not my thing.

Really interesting on the Petit Verdot that you and Mott agreed on all of the flavors but felt so differently about the wine. Great demonstration of trusting your own palate.

    ACTION FIGURES:
The first one is a Cylon Centurion, the second is a nameless space man figure from a 1979 Fisher Price “Alpha Star 1″ playset, the third is Ovion.

If I’m right, it’s not really fair having one of them not even have a name!

  41. June 30, 2008

    Neil

A California native, I tend to favor Sonoma and Napa. Oregon and Washington trail markedly and the other 46 are squeezed out of the local wine shops entirely. All things being equal, I’d more than likely experiment with a French or Italian wine over a PV from Vermont. Liked the show though.

  42. June 30, 2008

    Dominus

MD red wines are horrid. Being a MD native, I have been to MD and VA wine festivals and by far MD wines are the worst. They make a palatable dessert wine (Elk Cove Sweet Katharine) comes to mind but all in all, abysmal. Now, for VA wines a step above but still need some work though there are some good Cab Francs and Viogniers (Horton is fab). That being said, great show highlighting what we have to offer here on the East Coast. I’ll send you a bottle from NC.

    Welcome back.

    Cheers,
    Dom

P.S. I personally helped design an older Linden wine label many moons ago. Glad it showed well. :)

Granted, if it were possible to send bottles over the border without any problems, I’d be game for giving you some more BC wines to check out. But alas, I’ll just have to bring them to you the next time you’re in the province, or in Washington.

Good show though, GV, always good to see some off the charts wines showing well!

I would send you an Arizona wine, but it will have to wait until the weather cools below 100F, maybe October. We do have some wineries that are beginning to bring the thunder. Maybe you need to make a trip here instead, if you can take the heat!!

There are some good wines coming from the Elgin area, south and east of Tucson, Arizona, made by Callaghan- one I tasted is called Caitlin’s 2004 – a mix of 46% Petit Verdot, 31% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Cabernet Franc and the Padres 2005–39% Tempranillo, 31% Petit Verdot, 19% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Cabernet Franc. All the grapes are sourced from his vineyards adjacent to the winery. Good wines with great aging potential.

My wife will laugh too, but if I can’t get Aquaman this time – there’s always a chance we’ll be blessed with a third. Maybe if we have a enough kids she’ll give up arguing!

Quite interesting that those regions can grow wine. With cigars, you can pretty much make ‘em anywhere, but if you want to make good sticks, you need to get your tobacco flown in from Honduras, Nicaragua, the D.R., etc.

NY Finger Lakes Guy here. But also have toured and had a number of Maryland wines. Most still have a way to go! But try Boordy Vineyards in Hydes, MD. I think certainly the best in MD!
Many very good wines…Petit Cab, Seyval-Vidal-Chardonnay, Cab Franc and Chard among the best.
Also, a great winery to visit.

Did you ever try the Virginia Albariño I left for you this past January?
I have been a huge fan of Albariño since I visited Spain in 1994. A number of years ago I was at a Spanish tapa’s bar in Washington DC and they were serving a Virginia made Albariño from a winery called Chrysalis that I thought was pretty good. Since there are not too many folks in the USA that grow Albariño, and especially on the east coast, I left you a bottle of a 2006 Chrysalis Albariño (you were not in that day) hoping you would review it on your thunder show or at least send me a note on what you thought. Since the wine cost me a little over $20 I am a bit disappointed that you have not commented on the wine. What gives? By the way I am no way associated with the winery, I just love Albariño.

    Hey Gary (and or Chris),

Gotta tell you–it’s pronounced Chadds (space) Ford winery. The wine is made about 10 minutes from where I go to school (Go West Chester Rams!) in Chadds Ford, PA. It’s sold all over local wine shops and it is excellent. They make excellent whites as well and their prices are quite reasonable.

    Just thought I’d drop you a line…

I’m from Southeast PA, but have never been a big fan of Chaddsford. I have been to another winery near Chaddsford called Va La Vineyards in Avondale, PA. URL is http://www.valavineyards.com/index.html. They have a very fun and off-kilter sense of humor and make many wines from grapes I’ve never heard of. They also make a lot of their wines in micro-quantities of 20-250 cases. I’ve have a nebbiolo and something else I can’t remember. One thing I can say is that these are NOT your typical wine shop or state store wines.

Ever tried any Colorado wines? Visiting the wineries would be a pain (they’re all on the west side of the state and I’m here in Denver) but the local wine shop does have a small CO section. I’m curious what 4000+ ft of altitude does to grapes and the wine made from them.

I was poking around wine topics in wikipedia this weekend (where’d that 4 hours go?) and hit Missouri and found that before prohibition it was one of if not the top wine producing state in the US. My parents just bought some property near the Arkansas border and I’m wondering if there’s any good MO or Ozark appellation (it’s an official AVA) wines out there.

Can you recommend a good dirty New Jersey “sweatshirt” to go with the Maryland “sweatpants?” Maybe some limburger cheese for a pairing??? I lived in Maryland for 8 years was was hoping so badly that you would find something I could suprise other wine enthusiasts with. Maybe next time.

Hey Gary, how about a wine from the littlest state with the OLDEST vineyard in New England, Sakonnet Vineyards (http://www.sakonnetwine.com). They produce some interesting varieties and it would be interesting to see what you think about the Ocean State’s offerings! Love the show as usual and I’m pretty upset I’ve missed every opportunity for a 4th Generation EVERY TIME, including BOSTON!

Holy Shiz. My wife and I went to MD circa 1995 and stopped by Basignani on Robert Parker’s suggestion and were blown away by their Cabernet Sauvignon. It was unfiltered, lots of sediment, and tasted like a grilled Porto Bello mushroom and we loved it. So I was disappointed to hear the 2005 was…sucky.
The Linden tastes like a CAVE? Laughed out loud. Lots of love.

Linden also does a “Hardscrabble Chardonnay” that is outstanding. A buddy of mine who is now the West Coast manager for Neal Rosenthal wrote the following tasting note on Cellartracker about the ‘99

“WOW. This has to be up there with the all-time great ringer performances I’ve witnessed… A $20-ish,1999 Chardonnay – from Virginia – inserted into a flight of 1er Cru white Burgundy, and it’s picked by the group as one of the top two wines in the flight… Again, this shows the value of blind tasting. TN: Intense citrus (lime / lemon zest), yellow fruit, custard. In the mouth, fairly pronounced acidity up front, tailing to a nice finish. Bright, fresh and balanced. The group consensus: Puligny-Montrachet… Not surprisingly, we could not stop talking about this one for the rest of the evening. I need to go see this local vineyard and congratulate the winemaker.”

Gary, your Arizona wines are on the way. Two from Callaghan and two from Dos Cabezas. There may be a few more that Kent Callaghan is trying to get from other wineries. All are coming express delivery from the wineries to prevent heat damage and you should have them in a few days.

I have some Indiana wines on the way for you (one of them a Zinfandel I rather enjoy) from Oliver Winery. Just like little jonny H pointed out, we really shine with the icewine. Jonny, we should coordinate and send a bottle of Ohio and Indiana icewine when the time is ripe. That would be fun!

As someone who grew up in Wyoming, I gotta tell you that not a whole lot of things actually grow there (other than sagebrush). Yes, there are a few isolated spots with crops, but most of the ranchlands are devoted to livestock. That said, as far as I know, there is only one Wyoming winery (and it’s practically in Nebraska) — Table Mountain Vineyards. My hat is off to the valiant crew at TMV. Growing grapes in the harsh Wyoming climate must take tons of work!

I should be in Laramie to visit my family this summer, and I’ll see if I can find some TMV wine that I can send your way. At the very least, they should have an incredibly unique terroir.

I visited a Florida winery last month: Rosa Fiorelli. Wow. Different. Most of their stuff is made with muscadine grapes, a native vine. Wines made with it taste sweet and mediciny. Most wine drinkers will hate it. The best was probably a Blanc du Bois white (a hybrid created in Texas).

QOTD: Haven’t found an Indiana wine worth sending to the Thunder Show. First impressions Gary, first impression!

    GR8wine

    Gr8 show Gary,
Linden is regarded by some as being the best winery in VA (or more accurately, some folks think Jim Law is the best winemaker in VA). I just bought a bottle of that very PV last week. I might have to open it and drink it with some friends while we watch the Thunder show!
There’s a website that has a utility showing what states in which I’ve ridden my motorcycle. How ’bout a website to track and show from what states’ wine you’ve tasted? There’s a winery in every state, so there’re definite opportunities to explore. Here’s my list:
CA, WA, OR, NY (the big 4), CO, DE, FL, HI, IN, MD, MI, MO, NJ, NM, NC, OH, PA, RI, TN, TX, VA.
Inexplicably, I don’t recall having one from SC, KY, or VT because I’ve had opportunities to do so. Now I’m gonna have to seek out OK and AK.
Oh, and I have sent you wine. You tasted one of them on the Thunder show.

  104. July 1, 2008

    Kristen

Nice, glad to hear you liked the PV!

QOTD: Damn, I wish I had known! I would’ve brought a bottle or 2 from Sakonnet Vineyards in Little Compton, RI. You reviewed the 2003 Estate Chard, but there’s a whole bunch of new releases! I’ll see what I can do….the Vidal blanc and the Port are fabulous! :)

QOTD: Ohhhh…yeah. Um. Wisconsin wines are just bad. And worse? They’re not really from Wisconsin most of the time — they take grapes from Washington or California or New York and bottle them up.

The only exception to the rule, and even then it’s a qualified exception, is Stone’s Throw Winery in Door County. They use California grapes, but the product isn’t bad, ultimately, and maybe worth a taste?

I like the Ceviche Sauv Blanc. Gotta be careful, though — some of the wines are truly atrocious.

Baja Mexico cabs are great QPR but the northern neck of Virginia is the shizzie for great stateside wine outside Napa, Ingleside makes some awesome Bordeaux blends and Cab Francs for around $25 as well as some lower priced crowd pleasing Kool aid stuff. I live in NC, home of the Scuppernong grape once upon a time made famous by The Virginia Dare winery of Ontario California. I would proudly send you a bottle of NC wine if I could find one that wasn’t literally shizzie like ol’ Maryland there.

My husband and I checked out a few PA wineries within an hour’s radius of our home in Western PA a couple of years ago and came away with one thought:
EEEEEUUUUUWWWWW!!! Couldn’t find one wine that didn’t taste like formaldehyde. So I guess it depends on the “WHERE” in PA??

Heading to a couple Ohio wineries (Debonne, Grand River) on the 4th with family—brother-in-law lives in the vicinity (and does a good job making his own wine from local varietals). We’ve been to many along the “trail” in and around Geauga County (most recently Laurello—a bit pricey for most I liked). Quality is all over the map with these Ohio wines, but we love to visit the wineries periodically for the comaraderie.

I just went back to my hometown of Kalamazoo, MI for a wedding and stopped by St. Julien Wine Co. I must recommend the Braganini Reserve 2006 Traminette and the Braganini Reserve 2006 Syrah. Big ups to my hometown winemakers!!

    Gary,
Great show – you picked one of Virginia’s best with Linden. Jim Law from Linden sets the standard for the almost 200 wineries currently in Virginia.
When are you going to do a tour of Virginia wineries????? VA is only a short drive from NJ. October is Virginia Wine month.
Recommend you start with Linden, then Pearmund Cellars, then Rappahannock Cellars and finish with Barboursville.
btw a good starting point for VA wines is http://www.virginiawines.org/

Interesting show. :-) The US of A wines we get up here come mainly from the big four: California, NY, Washington, and Oregon. I tried a wine from Ohio once… was not impressed at all. Tasted like something someone made at home in their garage or basement. Definitely curious to see what else is out there.

I won’t lie. I want to make sure I get a wristband so I’m commenting. Not sure if this episode is part of the random pool but oh well. Besides, the QOTD is interesting.

I live in Japan and one time I had a Japanese Bordeaux style meritage blend that was good. It was $70 a bottle good but they were selling by the glass for around $15 so it was worth it. Unfortunately, I don’t remember the name.

I’m coming to this one a little late, but a very interesting episode nonetheless. I’m not surprised by your evaluation, and wonder if you were a little gracious towards Chaddsford. I tried their Pinot Noir and thought it was terrible. I hear they make a very nice Meritage, but I’m not anxious t find it.

I lived out west for 20 years, and have been to Napa, Sonoma, and the Santa Ynez areas. Now that I am in Pennsylvania, I’ve been trying the wines here and in Ohio. I am thoroughly unimpressed by the Pennsylvania wines, especially the reds. Granted, I’ve tried only around 15 thus far, but not one has been memorable, let alone worth any amount of money.

I’ve been satisfied by one Ohio winery so far: Laurello Winery in the Lake Erie region. They produce a few “Super Tuscan” blends that are actually pretty good.

    Dessert Wine Nerd

Macho Man was tight. Tiiiiiight. Though I hated his decline in the WCW and his lame role in the NWO ( one of the worst angles in wrestling history….ok, ill admit Hogan turning heel shocked everyone, but come on, the NWO lasted far longer then it needed to. didnt matter, the WWF was kicking taik with Stone Cold, the Rock, and Mick Foley anyway. Thank GOD the WWF won that war). Ouch on the last wine. I feel for them, but what can you do? QOTD: Sometimes these sites that explain wine shipping laws are confusing. Id love to be able to send you some Icicle Ridge wines if I could. I need to check this out further.

  154. March 12, 2009

    Todd

MD wineries can not send you wines to taste as the law prohibits the shipping of alcohol IN or OUT of MD.

    How do we change that?????

  155. August 26, 2009

    John

I agree that Basignani is a bust. I tried it at the Maryland Wine Festival last year, and it was a disaster. Big lines, over-rated. Same with Boordy, so I’m glad to see that you haven’t tried any of theirs.

On the MD Eastern Shore boutique winery called Tilmon’s Island. Unlike anything else I had tried from in-state. Difficult to get hands on, but worth it, if you can.

  156. September 13, 2009

    John J.

Gary, MD ISN’T checked off that list. basignani isn’t a wine. It’s awful, everyone I’ve had is bad. I’ don’t know who gave, or recommended that to you. Best thing about that winery is the label, which is a joke.
Md liquor laws are awful too, which I guess is a good thin when it comes to this wine.
If you wanna check Maryland off your list, try another one please. You should go with Black Ankle winery. They are making great MD wines right now.

Gary when I came across this episode, I had to comment (even though this is almost 300 episodes ago!) I did undergrad in Maryland, and I had the 2005 Basignani Cabernet Sauvignon (if you can even call it that) as part of a 3-week wine tasting course. This is my review (which is up on Corkd btw) verbatim, from when I tasted it in January of this year:
“I need to preface this by saying maybe I had a bad bottle (not corked, but something was definitely way off about this wine)
This wine was extremely briary, with a bizarre metallic and acidic taste. It was basically undrinkable. This might be an anomaly, but I can only tell you what I experienced with the particular bottle I tried. 55/100.”
SO yeah…a terrrible product. However, I did have a pretty serviceable wine from Maryland and I would LOVE to see you try it on the Thundershow. 2006 Boordy Vineyards Chardonnay. That review is also up on Corkd, tasted the same day as the Basignani disaster: http://corkd.com/wine/view/62246-2006-boordy-chardonnay.
