EP 495 The Other 46

Gary Vaynerchuk tastes a few wines generously contributed by some Vayniacs who stopped through after visiting wineries in the mid-Atlantic. Gary was excited to try these 3 reds from some of “The Other 46” states and wants to taste more!

Wines tasted in this episode:

2005 Chaddsford Due Rossi
2005 Linden Petit Verdot
2005 Basignani Cabernet Sauvignon

You can’t mark Maryland off that list yet Gary, that wasn’t a Maryland wine. I don’t know what you call that swill, but it’s not wine.
Qotd: Next time I’m up there, I’ll drop you off a bottle of BLACK ANKLE. That is a wine from Maryland that rocks. Every time I serve it to a guest they can’t believe it came out of MD. Maryland can make great wine, it’s hard to get the capital to do so for small wineries here though with our archaic liquor laws.
I don’t know why I continue to watch this episode because it makes me cringe at the end.
Although that look you have when you spit out the Basignani cracks me up, because it’s my reaction to it as well. I’d be really surprised if the person who gave that to you was from MD, or had ever had any basignani before.

What am I waiting for? How ’bout sub-90 degree temps??? Here’s my QOTD: what do you want w/a cooked bottle of NC wine anyway? 😉 Seriously though, I’ve quit shipping for the summer after receiving my second shipment of heat-damaged wine, but would LOVE to send you some Shelton or Childress when it cools a bit, so stay tuned!

My husband and I checked out a few PA wineries within an hour’s radius of our home in Western PA a couple of years ago and came away with one thought:
EEEEEUUUUUWWWWW!!! Couldn’t find one wine that didn’t taste like formaldehyde. So I guess it depends on the “WHERE” in PA??

Heading to a couple Ohio wineries (Debonne, Grand River) on the 4th with family—brother-in-law lives in the vicinity (and does a good job making his own wine from local varietals). We’ve been to many along the “trail” in and around Geauga County (most recently Laurello—a bit pricey for most I liked). Quality is all over the map with these Ohio wines, but we love to visit the wineries periodically for the comaraderie.

I no longer live there, but there are several vineyards in Southern Illinois that i used to go to with friends. I’m no aficionado, but I liked their wines.

Gary, have to thank you for expanding our wine knowledge. Now I do understand that it is imperative for us, wine lovers, to try different wines for all over and give the wine world a chance.

    Thanks…

Walked out the France aisle and picked up a wine from NC and a blueberry wine from Jersey.
Not a Proust cartharsis after imbibing, but a good experience. Thanks Gary.

    GV,

Love the other 46 concept. It was great seeing you in Seattle. I have had a different MD Cab and it didn’t quite work for me. We’ll see what happens. I agree that ID is on its way!

  • Matty C.

I just went back to my hometown of Kalamazoo, MI for a wedding and stopped by St. Julien Wine Co. I walked out of the tasting room with a big smile on my face because I was bringing some great Michigan wine back to San Francisco. I can’t wait to do a blind tasting with some of my industry peeps. I must recommend the Braganini Reserve 2006 Traminette and the Braganini Reserve 2006 Syrah. Big ups to my hometown winemakers!!

  • Jim From VA

    Gary,
Great show – you picked one of Virginia’s best with Linden. Jim Law from Linden sets the standard for the almost 200 wineries currently in Virginia.
When are you going to do a tour of Virginia wineries????? VA is only a short drive from NJ. October is Virginia Wine month.
Recommend you start with Linden, then Pearmund Cellars, then Rappahannock Cellars and finish with Barboursville.
btw a good starting point for VA wines is http://www.virginiawines.org/
