    QOTD: 4th
Great Show! I heard a lot of great feedback on the 20-30 something event you did hear in Seattle! my boy Henri (helped with the event)really appreciated your presence!

    All of Gary’s Critics:
Look i understand being critical of things like his intro maybe his design and layout (both of which i like) but i really hope that as you are criticizing something specific (his intro music, having an intro at all, etc) you are offering him something different or coming up with your “original” idea, otherwise to be honest there is absolutely not merit behind your criticisms. Thank you and Gary, I’m really appreciating the way things are looking and coming up since i’ve seen the first episode!

I LOVE BOEDECKER!!! I’m so happy you do too. I love Oregon Pinot’s in general, Scott Paul, Boedecker, Domaine Serene……there are so many amazing winemakers down there.

like the new funky type intro, good job and I do like the music unlike Jude.

Just ordered a case of the Boedecker Pinot as our palates (as I’ve learned from drinking quite a bit of the wines on the show) are very similiar. got on mailing list too…

QOTD: Gary, I’m going to hang out with friends, watch some fireworks, and just do it up big. A great friend and I are planning on opening our first Chateauneuf du Pape, and I’m really looking forward to that.

Wow, loved the episode, although I don’t know what to think now, having paid over $40 at nearly every vineyard we went to in Oregon. I’m not disappointed, really, because those were all estate reserve Pinot’s that I could not obtain anywhere else, but to hear you say you feel the price point should be $30 for a great experience, has made me optimistic I can find some more reasonably priced Pinot’s in DC.

Have a great 4th of July!

Hanging out with my son and daughter in law an the expected new baby, BBQ and lots of wine but none for her. Some fireworks watching. Little baseball. What you expect for 4th of July. I would love to get some of the Boedeker Stewart Pinot. Sounds like its right up my alley.

Nice show, great opening letter. I’ll be checking out that Boedecker for sure.

I’m sending the kids to Grandma’s so I can spend the holidays exploring wines in the Sierra Foothills and Lodi. Highlight is sure to be BBQ@TO!

    DaveyDonut

Wow… you said Oregon correctly I think every single time… almost brings a tear to my eye. :~) Nice, I’ll have to go pick up the Boedecker. 2006 was just too warm in Oregon and it made everything too alchoholic and everything tasted the same (very forward). 2005 was, and 2007 should be, a much better vintage (despite what Parker tells us).

QOTD: I’m flying down to California to go backpacking in the Emigrant Wilderness for 7 days with some of my closest friends from college. Can’t wait! One is turning 30, so he’s freaking out. Time for some nature action away from the city!

I get very nervous when I see you doing Pinot Noir. I have to look at the list of wines first.

Great show. Lemelson’s forte is in the higher end. I have been to that winery. It is stunning. No expense was spared building it.

Oregon Pinot’s. I love them. I have been to OPC, INPC and visited more then 40 of them. Of course DDO is my favorite (commercial post) and Cloudline for the money. I am a big fan of Argyle despite what they did to us. :)

This weekend, getting my house ready to sell. Working hard during the day and drinking some great wines at night.

    Happy 4th..

Great show. Absolutely 100% on the money w/ the Oregon pinot call. The really good ones are a steal compared to their Burgundy counterparts.

QOTD: My husband is in Moldova right now, so I will be hanging with a old friend I havn’t see for awile.

I read about a wine glass at Bed, Bath, and Beyond that sounds cool. It is pourous and aerates your wine while it is in the glass. Really? Maybe you could do a little comparison i.e. decant and glass aerate the same wine see what you get. We decant a lot of stuff, but sometimes we don’t want the whole bottle at once.

Sorry I haven’t posted in a while, but things have been a bit hectic. Fear no more, the answer to the QOTD:

I traveled over 550 miles by car amidst the insanely high gas prices to spend the 4th of July holiday with my wonderful family. I couldn’t be in a better place right now.

Mott & Gary: What are your plans for the 4th? Take it easy guys!

I tried a Boedecker pinot noir about 2 weeks ago, and it was really great. I’ve seen a few bottles at LWS, and I’ve been meaning to grab some for the cellar — better do it soon, since it’s probably going to disappear thanks to the Vaynerchuk-bump. :)

QOTD: A young cousin is passing through town this weekend, and we’ll be showing him the local sights. It should be fun!

QOTD: Non-stop BBQ-ing from tonight through Sunday. My brother and sister in law are returning from Oregon–I’m sure they got to your book signing in Portland. Sunday will be an all-out battle of the N.W. vinos: Those that they’re bringing back from Oregon vs. those that my wife and I brought back from Washington a few weeks ago. It’ll be a grand way to toast the good ol’ USA. Happy Fourth, everybody!!

Gary, First off the book signing in Seattle was pretty good. I’m always shocked at how big your personality is compared to… well the rest of you. Next, you suck, because as of today my favorite Oregon wine shop is totally out of Boedecker Stewart, and they wanted to know where the rush came from.

QOTD: Hopefully my third wine-tasting session with my parents. They are trying to get me into wines they like and I’m just trying to get into wines in general. I’ve got a £26 Chateauneuf de Pape, a £23 Rjoca and a £16 Riesling. They are also buying 3 wines each, at the same price points… so it should be a good Saturday, at least! ;)

Since I finished Uni, they’ve loved trying to include me in more things… I don’t think they like that I wasn’t living at home for 4 years! Heh.

Hope everyone else has a great weekend.

Heading from Northern VA to the outskirts of Mebane, N.C. to visit with my eldest son and his family. Gonna give up the beltway for some peace and quiet.
Re the show……………., while the wines sound great, they are a little…….(no, a lot), beyond my price point.
So, I need to take a passie-pass, and settle for 3 bottles of (previously rated) La Linda, or 4 bottles of Los Alamos Melbec….both, pretty darn good wines.
Not to worry though…….when I hit the lottery, (you gotta play to win), I’ll reconsider the Oregon wines.

  77. July 2, 2008

    Dominus

First, great show. Loved it. #496! Wowwwwwwww

Being a member of OPNC (Oregon Pinot Noir Club) I’ve had these wines and have some stored in my mini-cellar and you are dead on in your ratings. Prior years of Lemelson were exceptional though I haven’t tried the ‘06.

I’ve been to the Willamette Valley and it is a wonderful and beautiful area that made me think to buy a small vineyard and grow my own pinot. Well, that has yet to come to fruition but on my radar like you owning the Jets one day. You’ll realize your dream before me.

QOTD: Going to the Mall watching the fireworks over the Washington Monument or to the local Rockville high school to watch fireworks and enjoy a nice Zin as Spoiled referred to.

Hope your holiday is wonderful. This is one of my favs.

Cheers and I raise a glass to the great US of A!

Told you I’d try it! This rules…

7/2/2008 rated 92 points: Lots of toasty oak on the nose, along with some dried pine cone and raspberry wound up with licorice. There’s also this nice aroma of cherries covered in truffle salt with just a dash of black pepper. Very beautiful aromas, and what I seek in an Oregon Pinot. Beautiful in the mouth, showing tons of that truffle salt covered cherry. Finish isn’t quite as intriguing as the sniff, but tasty never the less, mainly showing toasted cherry and the raspberry licorice. A beautiful wine, blending perfectly new world Pinot and Burgundian class, and a steal at $30.

Love the Oregon Pinot, so big ups on the show. Now I have to add Bodecker to list of entry level bottles to try. Even though I am scheptical of most, besides the Ransom (a total steal at 20 bones)and Grochau Cellars that really stunned me at a tasting with other big names that were more expensive, and if Bodecker is rocking maybe add it to the gotta hit list for the fall trip to Walla walla and Oregon.

QOTD: Wife’s family on the 4th with some Oregon Pinot non the less then Fire works on the Mall. Saturday will be a day of hiking and hopefully a little rock climbing, weather permitting.

QOTD: I’ll be working at “The Pepper” on the 4th, and attending a wedding at St. Patrick’s Cathedral on the 5th. Reception at the Rainbow Room, looking so foward to it. Gotta bring my big camera for this one! There will lots of wine flowing.

Have a happy holiday everyone. God Bless America.

Start of show…. Zzzzz…what? :) Kidding. Classic. I attempted to expand my palate this week- I almost bought a $35 borolo- but then thought “Oh ‘S’ I am not putting down that coin for a wine I haven’t tried”. I’ll get there, though, so keep the faith. I’m not a lost hope yet darlin’, so don’t ignore me just yet like I know you want to. I have just a _little_ Hebrew in me, so I’m still just a smidgin’ cheap. I’m getting there.
QOTD: Just had a big “A” 24hr-4day family reunion less than 2 wks ago- hanging out with brother _maybe_ if we feel like it. We still have family hangover. Maybe catch a barb’que- You?
As for Pinot- I dunno- Mortal Kombat is probably the only vid game I can swing= maybe I should try this one?
Macho Man in the background- nice- he’s the first WWF impersonation I could do- still can (as much as a girl can). :) I dare you to give us a Macho Man opening… disregard past… a new one. Still lovin’ on your shows, GV… Thank you so much for staying with us (especially slackers like me).

Don’t worry, no wine will be consumed. This is a pure gin and tonic and mai tai adventure.

Hey GV thanks for another great show. I dated a guy from Oregon for a minute; he turned crazy, but he did introduce me to Oregon wines which was great! QOTD: this weekend I am taking a friend up to my family’s lake cottage in northern Michigan and hanging out with my family for a couple of days. Beach, family, food, and wine – no better way to spend the holiday! Keep it real.

Glad to see that the OR put up a decent showing today. All those wines looked a little dark to me, compared to what I usually think of Pinot Noir from Oregon.

I’m a lurker, but also under 21. Here’s a question: I saw on some game show a question about what temperature wine is best served (or maybe it was stored) and it said 45 degrees (F). Is that about right??? Just curious. Loved the show, quick, succinct, yet full of fun…the good kind of fun.

sooooo happy you did a show on oregan pinot.. i have been subconciously waiting for this. i think if i lived in the states, i would be drinking a lot more of these bad boys. 30 bucks is some change, but, in the scheme of good wine, it is a deal.

Will in fact be celebrating my own birthday too, on the 5th. I feel for the other bloke you mentined because it’s hard having a birthday on a holiday weekend when everyone’s away.
Anyway, he delightful BabsHoney has promised to prepare the steak dish on the cover of this month’s Gourmet and we’ll wash it down with a celebraory bottle of Turnbull cab. Also some prosecco with the birthday cake. We hope to get over to have a gander at the Brooklyn Bridge waterfall tho methinks that might turn out to be a disppointment. Still b-days happen only once a year so I’m gonna enjoy it.

Yo Gary, you need to represent the dirty Jers hard-core. I’m talking mustache, baby. Give it some thought; if you’re like any other Russian I know, give it a few days and you can bring some serious heat to the table.

Hi gary: love this show, maybe because I luv Pinot Noir. Since you’re in Oregon, have you tried any Pinot from Domaine Serene? I like them, the Jerusalem Hills was a very nice experience. What you think?

not even fair to put a 2005 up against 2006. the 2006 is just way too young!!! plus 2005 seems to be a pretty good year for oregon pinot. you should redo the 2006 next year with the 2007!!

  127. July 3, 2008

Ah, very nice! I live in Portland Oregon, so I’m familiar with these wines. My tasting notes for the Lemelson and Boedecker wines are on my blog.

Stoked to see you do a Siduri wine – they are absolutely one of my favorite RRV PN producers!!!!!! And GREAT people – their Oregon offerings (esp their Hawks View Vineyard) are some of my favorites, and are not as pricey as their Cali counterparts.

Ah, Oregon pinot. That’s a religious experience for me. It was great to see the episode. And I’ve been a Siduri fan for a few years now.

QOTD: I’ll be spending the evening of the 4th with my wife and kids at the Winery at Wolf Creek a few minutes from home. We’ll take some snacks, buy a bottle or two of better-than-average Ohio wine, sit on the grassy hill and watch the fireworks from a few miles away.

  134. July 3, 2008

    W Miree

Great show. I probably drink more Oregon Pinots than any other red wine. I am also a big fan of Siduri, buying several bottlings every year. I was excited about the Boedecker. I will be out at the IPNC in McMinnville, Oregon at the end of this month, and will certainly look this wine up.

QOTD: Several food/wine events with good friends and family, starting tonight at a live Maine lobster dinner, tomorrow lunch and swim party, 4th night at a club on top of the largest mountain around Birmingam and that has a viewing patio overlooking the city less than a block away from a huge 20 minute fireworks display. The fireworks display is so close it makes your whole body vibrate when the explosions go off.

    Hi Gary,

Thanks for reviewing Oregon Pinots! Even if we are not one of the “Other 46″

So good to meet you at your book signing in Beaverton last night. Very informative, inspirational and entertaining.

I forgot to pass on a hello from CP Lin. I spoke with him earlier this week from New Zealand. I told him I was planning on hearing you speak and he asked me to say hello. So there.

Enjoyed the show Gary! Oregon pinot noir’s have a special place in my heart. It took a monumental glass of one a couple years ago to open my eyes to the wine world…haven’t looked back since. Just missed you out in Portland, hopefully, I’ll run into you somewhat soon.

QOTD: Writing this from the Denver International Airport on my way to my family’s house in South Dakota. We’ll all be watching archived shows all weekend.

Gary great episode. I grew up on those Ludens cherry drops LOL. Even if my throat didnt hurt i would be popin them like crazy lolz. That 1st and 2nd wine sounds awesome.

    QOTD:
-Going to the in laws house in napa to watch fireworks and then going wine tasting this weekend. Probably going back to alpha omega because i am pretty much in love with that place now.

    Diana L-S

    Great episode Gary!

QOTD: I’m helping run a tag sale but then spending the rest of the weekend with family relaxing on the deck and probably drinking some wine.

To kick off the holiday my employer had a wine and cheese day at work today. We sampled sauvignon blanc, riesling, rose, pinot noir, merlot and a dark zinfandel. The owner took us through the guide of developing a palate, proper tasting and then we tried each one. It was a lot of fun. And had some incredible cheeses to go along.

    Have a great holiday!

    gary -

nice ep. since i’ve had (and much enjoyed) Siduri’s Rosella’s Vineyard Pinot (NOT in oregon), it reminded me that Rosella’s Vineyard is right next to Gary’s Vineyard, and THAT reminded me to tell YOU to do an all-Gary’s Vineyard episode! Gary does Gary’s!

My son turns 19 years old on July 4th.
It’s a big deal as he also gets his first car he purchased, with a little help from Mom and Dad. We have that on Friday, with a special good morning breakfast, plus afternoon BBQ’s.

Then on Saturday and again on Sunday there are meetings with friends and family, and yes more BBQ..

BTW: Hot summer nights, try a Rose’ from the Bandal area of France. Do you know what I am talking about? Have a safe holiday and see you at the Crush Pad next week.

Hey, Gary-glad you liked the Boedecker. It really does rock! I always liked Siduri’s California Pinots, too bad their Oregon PN doesn’t measure up…

QOTD – Hosting the massed with another Epic BBQ. We are the party people in our circle so I just got done cooking the chicken and the ribs are in the oven now! 30+ folks, dogs, burger and the chicken and ribs. Pool splashing and all that.

So your gonna torcher me and make me want to break the bank on a $30 Pinot. Thats fine on my expense account but hard on the home budget. I dont normally roll that big…

QOTD – A group of 10 old friends who I haven’t seen in a while are coming over and we’re doing steaks on the grill. I think I’ve found the best source of steaks in the world – butcher Bryan Flannery down in California does amazing things with meat. He’s not cheap, but for good friends and a special reunion he’s worth it.

Question is, what wine to I pair with amazing beef? Here’s a link to my cellar peeps, if you want to give me a suggestion: http://www.cellartracker.com/list.asp?iUserOverride=brucejones . If it helps, I’m also serving truffled stuffed potatoes and a sweet onion, corn, zucchini and basil saute.

Aloha, I just wanted to vent a bit about shipping costs. I live in Hawaii, and I am a big fan of the show; therefore, I wanted to order a “Mott..Link it up!” T-shirt. However, as usual, we get reemed on shipping just because we live on an island in the Pacific. If I’m not mistaken, the only shipping option on a $15 T-shirt is $23 to Hawaii. As mentioned, I am just venting and I understand the current shipping costs. However, please let me know if there is a cheaper/more feasible way for those of us in Hawaii to order stuff from you. Mahalo.

Living in Ireland I don’t get a chance to taste much Pinot Noir from Oregan but I was in the states in Feb and i picked up a bottle of Lemelson Thea’s Pinot Noir. You pretty much described what I drank. It was interesting but nothing like any Pinot Noir I’d drank before, I was wondering if all Pinot’s from Oregan/Washington are of a similar style. I’m guessing from your reviews maybe not.

    Keep up the good work.

Great show…Luden’s throat drops, oh the good ol’ days, I am pretty sure they serve no medical purpose only yummy deliciousness.

QOTD: Unfortunately, I won’t be celebrating with my own family, but I will be celebrating my boyfriend’s aunt’s 70th birthday today. And, tomorrow I am doing a 4th of July style hamburger cookout in my small Swiss village with some friends. Happy 4th of July everyone!!!!!!!!

Gary – those dot candies you mentioned – are those the ones that are dots of candy on strips of white paper ???
Well… if so, they are an old candy type called shoe buttons from the time when they wore high-buttoned shoes.
This weekend with the family – no definite plans but we might just have a casual cook-out type deal.
    Have a good holiday yourself.

Great Show! We’ve been fans of Boedecker Cellars for years. I can vouch for their quality across the board. They have mad skills. If you order from them, get a few bottles of their rose and purity chardonnay too. Just incredible!
They’re one of the invited winemakers at IPNC (http://www.ipnc.org) this month.
If you’re coming to IPNC or find yourself in the Willamette Valley/McMinnville area, you can buy their wines at Roths Market in McMinnville right across from the event.
This weekend? Repairing our hacked website but squeezing in a mtn bike ride in Falls City and a few bottles of the aforementioned rose. So it’s not a total loss…

    Gary,

A lurker makes his first post! After watching 10 episodes I came to realize you taste a lot of f***ing wine. Forty Malbecs in a week? Question of the day for you: What wines do you drink at home?

As for my July 4th I had a friend get us access to the Cabrillo National Monument after hours with his high security pass and got to watch all the fire works for down town San Diego, CA from a cliff overlooking the Pacific. I hope yours was equally amazing. And from the bottom of my heart thank you for such a passionate wine show. Your commitment really shows.

    Thanks Gary

A screwtop – good on them; they do sound like they care about their wine. Coming from Australia I still can’t believe so many US wines are still produced under cork.

QOTD: Well it’s Monday so … the weekend just gone was about a spectacular afternoon on a friend’s junk in Aberdeen Harbour Hong Kong. “Next weekend” I’ll be back in Australia an getting very excited my trip to the Claire Valley next Monday morning.

    Cheers

Had a great time at your book signing in Portland! Thanks for coming out. We hope you enjoyed your time here. I was so pumped at how many people came out to the event. You were charming and entertaining and insightful as usual. I even paid full list for the book, but it was worth it once it had your sig on the cover page.

We went to the beach and barbecued chicken and had a Chinon Rose with friends.
I took the book with me and our friends started reading it and now they are interested in your programs.

HI GARY, HOW ARE YOU? Was there a question? If so I missed it. Pinot from Oregon can be very nice!

Saw a bottle of Siduri at a local wine shop in Kobe, Japan that I go to. But the Boedecker sounds like the real deal. I’ve had Patricia Green, Drouhin, and some others and generally enjoy Oregon Pinot quite a bit. Old school funk with new world pizazz.

    nice show, nice tee-shirt!

i am heading to SF, shortly i pray!

i liked that Shaw Siduri in the the context of the rest of their wines this past
RRV Winter Wonderland; thought it only behind their way pricier Keefer Ranch PN.

II really liked that episode Gary. QOTD: We went the North Fork of Long Island and tasted! We were really suprised at the quality especially of Merlot. There’s a small producer on the south fork called Channing Daughters who’s doing some cool stuff make small productions of blends and rarely heard of varietals- right up the WLTV alley!

GARY! I cdnt wait to get my hands and mouth on Boedecker…Im drinking it now, have to say my palate doesnt agree about this wine. I agree its complex, I get the tea, I get the heat, I get the Ludens cough drops…but I wasnt blown-away. I have a question…when I received the wine, as it was shipped overnight, the bottle felt warm to me. I taste more of a “sour” flavor and want to know if you think that too much heat could cause this sour-ness.?

Isn’t Oregon in the mid-lower North West? Washington is the “upper” NW.

You had to mention pork belly, didnt you? Thats it, Im throwing down. I will out pork belly you anytime, anywhere. mmmm with a sherry jus and some potatoes and quails egg. Youre going down Vaynerchuk, youre going down hardcore. Nice showing on some of the pinos. Oregon is def. something I need to check out in the future. QOTD: Probably something simple. I want to cook some veal saltimbocca. Watched a recepie on the Food Network and it looked like perfection. Family will love that Im sure.
