Good show. That was a lot to take in.

QOTD: Try and get ahold of some of the pre-taped WLTV episodes from Mott, find a wine that Gary pans and short it before the episode airs… It’s that simple. Who knows, it might not even take a year.

    Kick ass show!! Cramer rocks!

I’m not buying any more stocks cause I lost about 5K 2 years ago when I first started watching Cramer.

I might start investing in 2005 bordeaux though!!

  50. July 10, 2008

    ChezJim

WOW! These 43 minutes left me exhausted. That was incredible. I bought wine once as an investment. Couldn’t let it go when it was time to sell. I haven’t done it again. It’s just too fun to drink.

BOOO YAAAH, Cramer is the man. Probably the only investment show on TV that you could keep a non-investor entertained with. That’s just too much enthusiasm for one episode of WLTV, some kick ass wines too. Hope I’m lucky enough to try some one day.

  53. July 10, 2008

    prplhaze

That show was just incredible. The intensity was amazing. What a great group of wines to taste too, I would not mind getting my hands on that port.

    PhilB

The expectations were high, but man did you prevail!!
It was great! and SO instructive too…
Just one thing though, I know the prices will keep soaring (and soring some of us too!) but for example, a wine with a 70-year lifespan will not keep increasing at the same rate throughout its’ life, will no? When is the right time to sell : 20, 30, 40 years from now? You need to get some solid ROI to justify keeping an investment for that long… Although I guess the people who bought ‘45 Mouton back in the days probably paid 15$ dollars for it…

Anyhow, a great, great show! Thanks!

Amazing episode. Towards the end I thought Cramer was a good example of what happens when you don’t spit during the thunder show…

  58. July 10, 2008

    Matlatzinca

I have to agree with ChezJim, I don’t think that I could invest in wine. It is really just too good to drink it. I might buy some of the ‘05 bordeaux to keep for special occasions, but I doubt I would ever sell it.

I got a hold of some ‘04 Boudreaux (the WA wine Gary loved) and thought initially that I would keep that as an investment. Turns out I’ve given a few bottles away as gifts, and celebrated with another bottle yesterday.

  59. July 10, 2008

Gary, interesting show. I usually buy and drink immediately, never thought of investing or laying down for future.

Rockin show guys, top 3. This show has shed some new outlook on wine investing. I need to get a bottle of the 77 Dows port…being the year I was born plays a great factor in adding that to my collection. I do have a problem though, living in Ma. how can I order it ????

Excellent show!!!!! Investing and wine – my two favorite topics! And a little bit of Manishevitz bashing, just for fun – that’s going down. You’re line “If a crapload of people want it, prices go up” should be tattooed on everyone’s forehead.

Don’t know what I would short but for small time investing I would get a few bottles of Israeli wine — yes, I really would, because that’s the undiscovered wine world that will be a world leader in a few decades! The next Portugal!

too much! did like the 77 dow when I had it, but was not too impressed with the 2005 Sansonnet – which I bought a case of on futures……should improve with age though. Who do you sell the wine to when it’s time to sell?

  89. July 10, 2008

    Lawrence Leichtman

I have invested in wine up until recently as I have gotten too old to redeem the biggest Bordeaux wines. But my investment till now has paid great dividends with 1st and 2nd growth Bordeaux wines bought in ‘85, ‘86, ‘90, ‘94 and some great burgundies as well bought at much lower prices. I now have 300+ bottles that are 20+ years old at an initial investment of no more than $10K but now worth more than $50K without the dollar inflation that may put it at $80K and will be drinking them for a long time. Get an inexpensive cellar. Put them away intelligently, drink them over time and the investment in wine will be worth it. Where else can you get an investment you will enjoy this much?

  90. July 10, 2008

    window washer

How many glasses of Port did Cramer have before the show?

  91. July 10, 2008

    David

So the question which wine is so over hyped and in a year everyone will be saying what the F was I thinking buying it?………Not so sure I know the answer but I have to think some of the Aussie bombs that will not last in the cellar.

  92. July 10, 2008

    CBG

Great show!!..reminds of the Ali G show when Bruno made those college kids jump off that camper and spell P.A.R.T.Y…each one was trying to outdo the others energy…I cried a little when you rinsed out the glass with the latour.I ordered a futures from Wally’s @ $169 and a year later when it was due they cancelled my order..they suck!

  93. July 10, 2008

    John R.

You guys make a great duo. Can’t get much more enthusiastic than that.

  94. July 10, 2008

    Chief Tootles.

Yes!! Gary and Mott said this was going to be a BIG BIG show, and it was! I wish I had room to invest in wine but the space in my small home is so limited. No room for a cellar or cellar type room.
I was totally not expecting Kramer to show up. That was awesome!

  95. July 10, 2008

    jimka

sorry gary, but this show is a bust :-( Who is this Jim guy, and
why do we care about his opinion about wine?

But I’m going to try to find one of those

I know this guy from Arrested Development, the funniest show of all time! (I guess he is on some cable channel? No TV for me,only a computer!) Great show. Mucho Energy.

Gary this episode was totally awesome. Too bad i am not a baller or i would buy a case of some of these :)

I will see you in the city tonight for episode 500 :)

  99. July 10, 2008

    MrTaz

Definitely the best show ever. You two Jersey Guys are a natural team. You were great on Mad Money, but that was just a small sniffy-sniff. This was 1000 times better. Great job!

  100. July 10, 2008

    GET A ROOM

I feel the rainbow just from watching this episode. Not that anything wrong with that.

Cramer’s QOFTD: Short 2-Buck-Chuck. That thing is going to zero!

  101. July 10, 2008

    Smahlatz

Hmm – David – funny the remark about Aussie bombs not lasting. Many years ago I was a member of an Australian wine club. I often got 10AUD (5 US$ at the time) bottles which were 10-18 years old, and they were sublime. Gary’s done it himself on this show with the Clarendon Hills. Recently, Penfolds did a show in London, and had an original bottle of Koonunga Hill (About ‘76??) which had lasted beautifully – and this is their entry level wine. Nice theory – it just doesn’t hold up as anyone who has experience will tell you.

  102. July 10, 2008

    JudeMurphy

QOTD- What did he say??? I didn’t catch a word of that!!
I’d answer it if I knew what the hell it was! haha

That was a hilarious combination- Gary & Jim!
They’re both so crazy! (The good type of crazy)
    Amazing Episode!

  103. July 10, 2008

    JonnyB

Incredible episode! You two MAD MEN brought the Thunder!

  104. July 10, 2008

    Peter Wood

That was exhausting! Forty three minutes of double madness…
Been trying to convince people in Britain about port for seven years and nobody has been listening to me! As you said Gary, buy 77 and 85 for investment, but also look at Oporto bottled ‘70 from Taylors, Dows and Grahams (but not Warres) for drinking. They are better than the ‘77 for drinking now and are stupidly cheap.

    QOTD – I didn’t understand a word of that!

  105. July 10, 2008

    Lee W

FUN SHOW!!!! Hurry with the California value show

  106. July 10, 2008

    DAve A

Never saw the money guy’s show – what a neat dude!!! Got to TIVO him! He is a HOOT! You need to hire him! hahahaha. He needs to hire you? Well, ok, Mott should buy you both as a future investment. snicker. Maybe Jim should have eaten prior to the tastings? hee-hee.

GR8 show! GGGRRRR8888! Just as Johnny Carson had a person on the couch, you might best shine when you have Ed on the couch!

Can you have him back for a $10 wine tasting? I’d love to see his eyes when you talk about $10. smile.

Great comment over Yellowtail, very clear focus on what you are all about. And what I enjoy – trying things. I am monogamist in marriage, but a WAY wild swinger when it comes to wine. hahahaha.

    QOTD: ugh?

  107. July 10, 2008

    Scott EJ

Maybe I misunderstood your comment about the Cali-Cult wines making a mistake by shutting themselves down thru mail list, but, I for one am kinda glad they do. It would really kill me if some Saudi Prince and gobbled up every last bottle of Screagle or Harlan only to take it back and not appreciate it. They don’t need to be branded worldwide….they’ve done that at home where it matters most. Let Bordeaux, Burgundy, and the Rhone have their fame worldwide…I’m cool w/that. Just stay out of our backyard and we’ll enjoy what we have on our terms. It’s not like it’s going un-sold.

Great show!! You got me very interested in investing in wine. Just a couple questions. What’s the best way to store it and where would I sell it in 10 years?

43:22? I could have watched for an hour and 43! Great show. Booyah for Jim and Gary.

  119. July 10, 2008

    manonthemoon

I know I am in the minority, but I have to say I really didn’t feel the show. Maybe it was the hype and I was expecting a big time wine guy/maker or maybe it was all the talk of trading commodities. It was just not what I was expecting from the Thunder show. I think you will do well on his website and you two had chemistry and the energy was great, but it just seemed the episode dragged on and on. It was entertaining, but I would have trouble putting this show anywhere near the top 50.

  120. July 10, 2008

    E

    I think my monitor asploded.

QOD: no idea what he said. But then again I’m more interested in drinking it than investing in it, so.

  121. July 10, 2008

    Tyler RM

Great show! WLTV and Mad Money are probably the only two shows that I watch every day, and it was great to see Jim on the show today.

QOTD – Maybe white zin or those fruity wine cooler things?

  122. July 10, 2008

    Rani Haykal

This will be a super classic episode for sure down the line.

I wish I had money to invest in some 1st growth Bordeaux…maybe one day…

QOTD: I didn’t understand what the question was so Im gonna have to leave this area unanswered.

    Excellent Show!!
    QOTD: Please see “glenn’s” comment…DITTO!

    DirtWineKen

It was fun watching this one-upsmanship contest of olympic proportions!! Too much yak and re-yak and not enough focus on the wine for me; but interesting as a change of pace. Personally I never buy a wine I don’t plan to drink myself. Not to say than I’ve never sold wine – because I have. It’s just not what I buy wine for.
QOTD: Wines don’t go down, dude. Except when a recognized brand prices on its rep and proves to be a dud and they’re left with a bunch — but then — why would you want this wine?

  126. July 10, 2008

    Oklahoma Michael

Not really sure what the question of the day was. Great show, however, I only invest in things to drink with friends and family, because that is all the return I will ever need.

  127. July 10, 2008

    sr. don julio

tough show to watch today. maybe because it featured Jim who had once recommended that we should hold onto Bear Stearns stock (stinko!). great show Gary but Jim kinda deflated it from my standpoint.

  128. July 10, 2008

    brorjace

Wild show! Jim, you are a crazy guy, I think I should watch your show now too. 500 is going to have to be pretty awesome to beat this, nice job Gary, great show!

Fun show. Energy much? I’m so worn out after 43 min I think I need a nap!

Investing sounds nice, but I couldn’t keep my grubby little hands off the investment.MMMMMMMMMM.

ha ha best show on Tv right now is this one. I think i need to take some calming medications my neighbors were pacing when the energy went up. But nice chemistry between the hosts and very funny to see Gary forced to bring his hoopla game up a notch and see Kramer bring the decibels and speed to mammal friendly proportions.

I want the Cali show bring it babeeee

Guess I should go to my Costco & pick up the rest of the $149 2004 Haut-Brion which also scored 95 WS as did the 2004 Latour. I knew this was still priced way, way too low.

  134. July 10, 2008

Gary , “Rip in” show. You and the mad man of Money. I thought you guys were going to jump through my screen. Simply outstanding wines, are you kidding Latour and a 77 port on the same show. I was feelin it bro, you guys rocked the house!

  140. July 10, 2008

    The Original Marc

Easily the greatest episode ever, and I think I’ve seen just about all of them.

QOTD: (Great QOTD!) The $30-60 Australian wines. They don’t have the brand recognition of the really expensive ones, so they won’t be able to keep loyal followers when the trend swings and the huge fruit bombs go out of style. Then nobody’s going to want them and the price will sink.

  141. July 10, 2008

    Bobby Wino

NICE opening GV and Mott…I like it.

Wild show. I’m too exhausted to type a comment. Gary, I keep saying it, but now I know for sure… you are a genius. I think I’ll have to watch the show again to grasp all the info, but I’ll have to rest up first!

    awesome show!

  146. July 10, 2008

    Dr. Dan

I gotta tell ya, having Cramer on this show almost makes me want to stop watching. And, I’ve been a regular for almost 2 years. He’s even more obnoxious on this show, with that false know-it-all attitude, than he is on cable. Big, big disappoint WLTV. Thought that I’d never say that. Shame on you all.

  147. July 10, 2008

Geez what nice things Jim has to say about Wine Library the store. Kudos! I buy wine to drink, not as an investment.
QOTD: Oh I don’t know this. How about GHOST HORSE VINEYARD Cab! Heh heh that’s a joke. Buy it for $5000 and sell it next year for a gazillion bucks!

For the 1% who don’t drink their wine within the first week or few days, this was for them which includes myself.

Fun, exciting though exhausting after a long day at work but I am really looking forward to #500 tomorrow evening while suffering through the aftermath of hernia surgery. Who can be more dedicated than that?

QOTD: Hmm, tough one but I’ll go with Yellow Tail as a specific brand that won’t be around much longer. It was fun for awhile with that great looking mermaid for the ad but it won’t last.

Adore the dividend concept for wine….just awesome.

Ummmm, that may very well be the BEST WLTV EPISODE EVVVVVVER!!

Wines that the price will go down? It would be the varietal that is produced a lot now and suddenly “goes out of style.” But which one? Hollywood may influence the lemmings again, who knows.

Great show. BTW, while watching this I am drinking my first Gruner Veltliner, a Schloss Gobelsburg 2005 Renner from Austria that I bought for $20 on the recommendation of one of your sales staff, and I am really liking it, so kudos to your great staff.

QOTD: Hmmm….I think i need to learn more about money.

  161. July 10, 2008

    Phil G

That was fun – wish I could have tasted those wines, though.

QOTD – I would short the 2003 Bordeaux, in comparison it might not hold up to other great years – I wonder if the fruit and flab will hurt the longevity of those wines. BUT, the price might not go down. Instead, it might not climb as quickly as other vintages…

  162. July 10, 2008

That was a seriously entertaining show. I cant answer the QOTD because I couldnt understand the question and I was laughing to hard. Gary I am so stoked to tell you I just had a Greco di Tufu for the first time and it was really awesome. Thanks for the show!

  165. July 10, 2008

    Awesomeness^2.

QOTD: Based on ageability and appreciability (not necessarily how much I like the wine now, or how good a wine I think it is:)

Mollydooker: The Velvet Glove ‘06 (or any of the mollydookers)

‘03 Lafon-rochet – drinking great now… in 15 years I think it’s gonna fall apart. Tannins already seem ripened and tired.

  171. July 10, 2008

    Juan

Gary, you did a great a job getting past a brain-dead guest for #499. I could not have kept up the charade for the 45 minutes that you did… You did Vayniaks a great service in showing us to never listen to a word of Madman, if anyone ever did anyway. I can’t believe you poured him a Latour, you’d have done better with Silver Oak, or K-J cab…

What’s the deal with “Revision3″ and the Crushpad 500th tonite?– tuned in to watch basically a web cam and the live intro and then as soon as you were finally about to “start,” nothing… What’s up w/that? Super secret marketing? Got to make sure all the f words are smudged? What the? Disappointed Big Fan of WLTV and good colleague at Crushpad…

  172. July 10, 2008

499 was high energy and rocked the walls.
500 was a bust. The video was great before and after GV did his bit. What a bummer, did we get blacked out or what? Now must wait till Monday to see Mott’s version of the big event.
    Too bad.

Gary never use Revision3 again! I was on 30 min before the show to make sure i caught it, the second you started with the opening phrase it totally crapped out. I think i need a good sport wristband!

  176. July 10, 2008

    GoinGray

Gary, about 30 of us tried to watch in Revision3 #7 and it kept going to black. We stayed in the dark and chatted with one another. We need wristbands : )

  177. July 10, 2008

    Andrew D

    Excellent show gentlemen

I find the rocketing prices amazing. Living in HK which is Bordeaux mad is pretty interesting. It’s the one wine I tend NOT to buy/drink as I see it as over priced and a minefield riddled with bad mid-priced producers.

The Latour is only $US450? With a weak US dollar Grange on realise in Australia is nearly as muck!

QOTD: ANY THING WITH A CORK. How could you invest this sort of series money in wine when it’s sealed with an old bit of bark, that’s proven to be ineffective? When I’m buying Aussie wine for cellaring I’ll only buy it if it’s under stelvin.

Hot Tip for Aussie investment wines – the limited addition Tyrell’s Bin Releases if you can get them. Wines from cool climate reasons like Tasmania and Victoria’s Yarra Valley will gain popularity as climate change pushes previously marginal areas into the spot light. Maybe a few bottles of New Zealand Syrah and Pinot could be worth thinking about as well as many of these areas are so new their no investment history.

    Cheers
    Andrew

Jim and Gary are like Siamese twins, in a psychic way. Their DNA must be entwined. And Jim Cramer is everywhere! I just watched Jim on Conan (I tape the shows). Great show.
QOTD: A sure thing. Right. I think Jim knows you have to take some risks even in the Wine World.

    Great show. Lots of energy.
QOTD: I’m used to buying wine that has great value. I collect a few cult wines, but nothing that doubles it’s price in a few years.

  184. July 10, 2008

    Richard Ritter

It was interesting to watch someone get faced in real time. Cramer started strong, and his speech just got more slurred as time went on. Excellent!

Episode 500 is a mystery. The feed was great before the show and right after, but during was a bust. Big disappointment!!! Have to wait for Monday to catch it all.

MY QOTD: (because Cramer’s made no sense) How do you trust the validity of a wine. I mean, how do you know if the wine has been stored properly when you buy it, for all you know it could have been in a shed in the AZ sun in July. Email me through my website: richardritterphotography.com (use the contact button. Thanks!

This is definitely the episode that I have been waiting for. Not because Jim Cramer was on, but just listening Gary and Jim, who is the type of person I deal with where I work, talk about their palates and the 05 bourdeaux’s. Personally, I think the 04’s were where it was at, but I agree none the less.

Also, it’s nice to see a comments section where everyone isn’t bashing each other.

  191. July 11, 2008

    Moselman

Tho’ the concept is a bit too esoteric for me personally, it was kinda fun being pulled through that knothole backwards! Lots of wine education there too, for those who cared to listen.

I’ll bet the haters aren’t doing so well at expanding their pals either.

“Not for wine lovers.” ?? No, Sir Gary wouldn’t have been amused. Nor the sundry other “red wine only for me, thanks” types

Alternative perspective: “This will be a super classic episode for sure down the line.”
Yes, or it could be a jump the shark moment…

  192. July 11, 2008

    RonD

This is the best WLTV show to date, bar none!

Can Jim become a “regular” guest?

  193. July 11, 2008

    BargePlus

I watched this show when there were abot 15 comments – all of which were positive. I felt a little odd as this show really, really, really didn’t do it for me. Than I just attended the 500th episode live and heard a lot of comments like “#499 was the greatest show ever.” Sorry to say but episode #499 was just wrong for me, and I wouldn’t mind if you waited another 499 episodes before bringing Jim Kramer back. Maybe it was the focus on investing rather than enjoying wine, or the prices, which were just way beyond what I would spend on myself and would even hesitate to spend when someone else picked up the tab. In my mother’s words, the show was “different” – which was not a good thing in our hosehold. In any case, if you’re keeping score, put me down on the side of NO to this kind of GV video blog.

  194. July 11, 2008

  199. July 11, 2008

    coffeetowine

HOLY COW!!! Great episode! It has been awhile for me, thanks Gary and Jim.

QOTD: I have to say any low end from Australia (Alice White, Yellowtail) because shipping costs alone should double the price of it ;) Too bad it is all about quantity with those big vineyards.

I do like the small vineyards like in Bordeaux. It just seems like quality is more important and the methods of managing the terroir seem more structured. Vintage is more important to small vineyards than in big ones like Cali and Aussie.

    Chris

    Hey Gary,

I’ve been watching your show for quite a while now, and I’ve been blown away with your frankness, passion, and original approach to describing wine. I think that episode #499 was thoroughly entertaining…you and Cramer fed off each other like no other. As someone interested in investing in wine, however, I do have to say that I was a bit disappointed. I was hoping for some actual sage advice in the stock realm of wine, which, I believe, could also be a potential source of investment, as there are various publicly traded wine companies. I’m new to all of this, so perhaps it was naive to hope for such a thing, but I would have loved to hear Jim’s comments on the state of the wine market.

  204. July 11, 2008

Loved the way you couldn’t get Jim to slow down and “smell the roses”. I think he was buzzing around the 30 minute mark.

    Hilarious and extremely entertaining. Kudos.

“Ice in veins equals big dollars” No emotions when making decisions doesn’t mean no heart, right? Gary you seem like you have a lot of heart. Icy veins to maximize profits gets us in trouble personally and as a nation…I think.
Great show. I kept wanting to see you two in a bar setting in some sort of David Mamet directed sequel to Glengarry Glen Ross. Good Chemistry.
What about Chateauneuf-du-Pape ‘01 and ‘04 as an investment? They have two for around $30 where I shop that the wine steward tells me would be good investments. Gary you sold me on investing in wine! Thanks

  207. July 11, 2008

My friend that knows I like wines and Cramer sent me this show….
What a HOOT… Enough to make me start experimenting with wines
and watching this show and collecting some wines again ;-)
….and as Cramer said… “Love those dividends” ;-)
Thanks for speaking Main Street’s language
and helping the rest of us appreciate wine again
for more than the usual swil.
Can’t wait till you bring Cramer back for the CA wines ;-)

  208. July 11, 2008

    Gary, Great show!
The “Crameresque” quality of WLTV is what drew me here in the first place. Jimmy! I love to see you out of your element! You and me at Roots drinking Port….mmmmmmmmmmm

    Can’t wait for #500

  209. July 11, 2008

Loved the show. This guy Cramer has too much energy! Never really got into wine as an investment. Even with more expensive wines I’m really just buying them to drink…and see what’s worth the money and what’s not. I have a lot to learn!

  212. July 11, 2008

  214. July 11, 2008

    Markintokyo

How can you short a wine?

Sell it now at a high price then buy it back later at a cheap price? But you’d need to buy it first at the high price! Just wait and buy it at a cheap price later…so the QOTD is actually asking which wines are going to fall in price over the next 12 months..Now I see..

Tough one but I’d have to say that if we include Futures buying, Bordeaux 2007. I also see some potential for Californian Cult Cabs to take a downturn. There are a heck of a lot of people on wine blogs complaining about getting tired of paying USD300+ per bottle in order to keep their mailing list allocations, and a lot of consumers keen to diversify, explore, find value with more value driven producers.

  215. July 11, 2008

    Josh

    Excellent show Gary,

I would invest but I know myself (and my wife) too well … we’d drink the profit.

  216. July 11, 2008

    Oregon Jim

This show was a whipsaw! Some great insights by Cramer as a regular consumer, and great to hear Gary break down the super premium stuff. Also some crazy moments of two guys fighting for control of the focus. The rabbit trail on vegetables and weight gain was out of control completely.

QOTD Cramer you can’t buy wine like stocks cause the brokers have to pay cash and receive cash. No short selling! Besides I think it is a bad risk to buy wine and expect it to go down later as it always is getting more scarce as time goes on. Even the bad wines appreciate a bit as they generally get better with some ageing.

I am taking your advice Gary from 500 and I am gonna stop lurking. This is an amazing show. You and Jim make a great team. When I was first told about your show everyone was like common its like the guy from mad money is talking about wine. Thats how I found you. You have become a great inspiration to me and nearly everyone I have introduced you to sir. I thank you for that. Plus we made a lot of great friends and networking opportunities at #500. I can’t thank you enough man. Much love.

Also you wanted us to link you to our show. We are knew and just working it out but we are taking your direction, finding our niche and filling it sir. http://l5rchives.com/

Wow!! Awesome Ep Gary. I had never heard of Jim Cramer before this (I live in Australia) but he seems like an awesome guy. You two together is a great combination and I hope you get him back on soon. He’s like the Gary Vaynerchuk of the stock world (or is it the other way around :D ). Easily the best episode I’ve seen to date (sorry, haven’t watched every single one, will get around to it soon). A few more things. Been lurking for a while, and I’m doing this comment because of you’re suggestion on ep 500. Watched it live on rev3 and it brought the thunder (although not as much as 499). Also, just got my Dad into WLTV and we just finished watching 499 together, he’s also a big fan of yours. Been wanting to get Dad into it for a while, because he’s into wine – both making and drinking – and he really likes the show now that he’s started watching.

Keep bringing the thunder, and me and Dad are both looking forward to the Bordeaux shows next week.

GOOD LORD this show was epic! Of course I watched the episode of Mad Money with Gary, and this had even more energy and flare in the thunder seats. Fantastic.

QOTD: I would bank on some cult CA wines from 2008 (especially down near Santa Barbara with the weather trouble and fire problems) that are mailing-list-only tat underperform in this vintage could possibly “short” within a year or so of release.

  223. July 11, 2008

thank you to passionate people was a terrible show but from south of France that’s the first time i can’t understand the question of the day ? Jim could you repeat your question ? :)

The Sansonnet 2005 is $ 50 a bottle? The 2003 and 2004 were both good and were priced accordingly, but I would hardly consider that Chateau to be worth $ 50 a bottle.

ENERGY! ENERGY! ENERGY! What a great show. I loved it. I am also thanking Gary for convincing me to buy some Bordeaux futures. I only with I had bought more now. Thanks for all the effort Gary and Jim. I loved it.

I’ve been seeing your show for a couple of weeks now and I noticed you mentioned Brazil a few times on this one. I wonder if you have ever tasted any brazillian wine in your shows, and if not, do you have any intention to do so? I’d love to see it! And just other comment, we do not get oil here out of luck, there are many projects and surveys for that. haha. Waiting for 500 episode!

I’m totally in favor of you having Eagle fans on the show. I haven’t read your book yet, there’s still a couple ahead of it in my reading queue, but I look forward to the Randall reference. His tenure with the green birds was exciting times in town. I’m guessing Jim isn’t really looking for a wine to short but is probably trying to gain appreciation for the down side risk of long investments in wine. I too enjoyed the shows adrenaline level.

Great 499th & 500th! I kept the live feed of the latter up for a good 30 minutes afterrwards end of the show, just to check out the party. Then in the accompanying chat room, Gary’s wife joined the conversation. I’m confident it was indeed Lizzie, because she shared specific, verified insights about other of G.V.’s immediate family members who’ve appeared on WLTV. Needless to say, it was pretty cool getting to wrap with her. Unfortunately, the live feed ended, and she left the room, before I could tell her I’m desparately looking for a bottle of any vintage of El Nido, “Clio”. I’ve found the El Nido, “El Nido”, but it’s $149! BTW, this is “Big-Fruit Shiraz Guy” from the Austin book signing…Please get back with me at: jdinsa69@aol.com

QotD: Great QotD… I think the crappy French vintages, like Gary’s 2007s, are going to fall off once people realize they’re not up to snuff. The Bordeaux market will correct itself [except for the 2005s], and we’ll be back to normal.

  236. July 11, 2008

  238. July 11, 2008

    torquey

I’m sorry to say that I thought that was the worst WineLibrary TV episode ever. Jim Cramer brayed like a jackass throughout it. Was having him on episode 499 just a ploy to make 500 look all the better by contrast?

  239. July 11, 2008

    brainpain

Where can you get two guys with that much enthusiasm? No where but WLTV!

  240. July 11, 2008

    Daniel O

    Wow, now talk about enthusiasm!!!

QOTD: Good question… unfortunately I can’t think of a wine that you could short sell. 2007 Bordeauxs are going to be expensive, even though the vintage sucked, but like Gary said, they have the brand equity and will likely sell even at rediculous prices, so that’s out of the picture.

Gary,Mott and the gang just the best I love WLTV and love MAD MONEY just as much. How just how do I ask myself what things in the universe do I love more that wine, Gary, Mott and Crammerrrrrrr Boo Yah babbyyyyy! I love watching but damn thunder like never before. Speaking of thunder….theme song my vote AC/DC Thunderstruck! Check it out Thunderstruck baby!

This needs to be a regular thing. I would love to see Jim with say 2 more tastes He would be on the floor!!! That would just be the best I think Jim would just be a riot hammered. Once again keep it going great work thanks to Jim for doing the show and oh Gary plug Jim’s books too please he plugged yours several times.
If Jim’s on again tell him to take off his coat loosen up a bit!

  244. July 11, 2008

Good fun! I need to think about my money more, investing it, and using the profits to buy and drink delicious wines. Didn’t quite get the QOTD but checked out Mainstreet and will probably keep my eye on it to encourage myself to invest my money.

Great show! I’ve only been watching for about a month now, and have watched some past episodes, but this was a great episode. I loved the conversation between the two of you. I like that Jim was honest and you didn’t make him feel like he had to taste the complexity that you do. Great job as always Gary.

    Holy Hell, you two together on the same show. . . . . . . . . . . Fantastic!
Wish I would have bought more than 6 bottles of 05 bordeaux futures,a year ago, but I would have no place to store it, and I doubt I will be able to store it for more than 5 years before drinking it myself.

Gary, you are getten huge. Mad Money for 8 minutes. . . . . . Awesome

    I wonder how much longer it will be until you are too big for the show.. . . . . . . :( We know its coming someday. . . . . . . . . . . . . but I bet it will be replaced with something HUGE. . .

I’m going to have to take a look at 77 & 85 port after that one.

I love Jim Cramer! You should have him on the show every week!
He’s the only one that can match your intensity Gary.
Great show, great info. Shame us CKC’s can’t roll that deep for future investments (cost of proper storage included).
But, fun to watch and good to know.

  266. July 11, 2008

    Pat Sissons

Great show guys! Although i don’t have a cellar to store any wine long term, I have been thinking about looking into making that happen sometime soon, and when I do I will turn back to this episode for guidance.

QOTD: honestly, i don’t know what to think of, but I would be interested in reading some of these comments. It’s always interesting to see which wines act pretentious on release and end up selling in the bargain bin.

  267. July 11, 2008

    Jason S.

QOTD: Maybe one of those fake wines owned by Thomas Jefferson?

GREAT show Gary. Really looking forward to the next investment show, not just because Jim was fun to have on, but I’m really curious about the CA cults wines and whether they’re really worth the $300+ price tags for Cab/Meritage.

  268. July 11, 2008

I usually can’t take Jim Cramer. But I watched the whole thing. Should have gotten him to drink more.

I loved this show. gary met his match with Jim C in the world of insane enthusiam. Loving it, loving it, loving it.

    Gary – don’t touch Jim’s cheeks.
Jim- You’re great, even when you’re buzzed!

I am afan of both of these guys and wine lover. I’ll need to take a nap after this high.

  270. July 11, 2008

    Jason T.

What’s funny is how mixed the comments are for this episode–most people saying it was great (even best ever), with some people saying it was the worst ever WLTV episode. I’ve never seen that kind of spread of opinions on a WLTV ep. I guess you have to expect that with Jim Cramer, though. Personally I thought it was extremely entertaining, and I felt like I learned a lot more about “the big picture” in the wine world. While I really appreciate the normal format (where the focus is on taste/value of just a few wines), this was a welcome break from the routine. Nice job!

  271. July 11, 2008

    BW

Great episode! Should have more guests like this
QOTD – If there was a wine to short, it would Silver Oak – horrible QPR! – not that it’s a bad wine, it’s just not worth the price.

  272. July 11, 2008

    Evan R.

Awesome episode!! I started watching WLTV when Revision3 picked it up, and I have to say I’m hooked. An investment wines show would’ve been cool enough, but the addition of Jim Cramer pushed it way over the top. Looking forward to more like this one, even though I’m more in the $20 league. It’s still fun to watch.

  273. July 11, 2008

    Ryan W

I am going to have to say that this show rocked, but the live show at crushpad blew. I am sure it would have rocked as well if Revision3 worked. Maybe you should have waited until they are out of BETA testing….lol. I only kid.

I can’t wait until Monday to see the tasting.

  274. July 11, 2008

    Paul J. Kiernan

Why have I been working all this time like a sucker when I should’ve been just investing in Bordeaux to pay the bills???

    Patrick Dennis

You both rock… I was in heaven today… I got Cramer… I got GV… I got Wine… I got to make some money… Dude who can ask for more than this! This was so cool. It was an informative show and it rocked the house. GV keep brining the thunder and raising the bar.

Cramer. Now you gave me a reason to spend some of the money you made me. CrAmerica in the house. Always a big fan when I’m on the road.

Now, how do I really invest in wine? Who is going to keep it and store it as “credentials” will allow it to keep value. Somehow the whole thing reminds me of collecting coins and the whole progression from just having it , to needing it graded, then certified, and recertified etc…

Ever hear of Venulum.com as a way of investing?

    Very interesting show, however! john

  283. July 11, 2008

Great show, Gary. I’ve commented before you need more guests and this was a home run.

I agree Karl: QOTD – A few Aussie fruit bombs would be good to short right now. I think they’ve been good to short for a few years now. Many Aussie winemakers haved heeded the warning though, and are finding better structure and balance from the warmer areas.

    Great show Gary and Jim.

  285. July 11, 2008

Gary…..Great show….you two together…almost too much thunder but it’s good. I have been a lurker for about two months, have loved all the episodes and thought I should start posting. Keep up the awesome work.

    Dr. Lance Aoyagi

As always, a great show. However, when speaking of investment wines, I wish Gary would elaborate more on wine storage. If a wine is stored at less than ideal temperatures, would it not compromise the value of the wine? I live in Hawaii where the average temperature is probably 80 degrees Fahrenheit, and if a wine storage unit here is unreliable or inconsistent, I would think that the integrity of the wine would be affected.

  296. July 12, 2008

Oh my god, now this is probably my most favorite WLTV episode. Now you see that wine is not just for drinking, it could be a money maker for the owner :) 05 Bordeaux for the wiiiiin!!!!

  298. July 12, 2008

    Sassodoro

    Good show!

QOTD. Interesting question. Many wines decrease in value with age. For example, I think somebody (maybe Robert Parker) said the Beaujolais Nouveau should be consumed within twenty minutes of leaving the winery. But why would anybody lend you a bottle of Beaujolais Nouveau knowing that it wouldn’t be returned for a few years? It will taste terrible then. The trick would be to short a bottle of wine whose *economic* value will decrease, but whose *gustatory* value will hold or improve, so that somebody might be willing to lend you a bottle. That suggests shorting a kind of wine that might go out of fashion. Maybe over-oaked excessively alcoholic fruit bombs? Alternatively, there are some white wines that will improve with time (up to a point), but most people these days seem to think that whites should be consumed as young as possible, so that might suggest another kind of wine whose economic value might decline while its gustatory value increases.

  299. July 12, 2008

    Jim in Atlanta

Two of my favorite personalities talking about two of my favorite things. It does not get any better than that. And wine seems to calm down Jim a bit. QOTD – To me, wine is for drinking and not for investing, so I don’t want to short any of it.

Gary and crew: great show. Honestly, I still watch religiously but have not posted in a long time. I live and work in Des Moines, IA, and I have to say I have talked to more WLTV fans in the last month than I ever thought possible. Congrats on everything. I love the concept of the “wine as investment” show, and it’s great to see Mr. Cramer along for the ride. What do you think the trend toward wines of immediate consumption will have on the wine investment market? Even the 2005 Bordeaux I have been privelaged enough to try have been decidedly open and leaning toward “California” in style. I worry that these and most other wines are steadily losing their ability to age and could really undermine wine as a long-term investment.

  303. July 12, 2008

    Garry M,

    Best show ever!

Can’t wait for the Cali. investment show.

Great show with lots of energy. A special shout out to my dad who in honor of my birthyear, 1977, purchased lots of those ports decades ago. We’ve enjoyed many over the years and still have a few full bottles of Dows, Warres, Fonseca, etc to enjoy on my 35th, 40th, and 50th birthdays.
I’m hoping the 2007 Sauternes will be just as good for my daughter (cause it won’t be the bordeauxs!)

    Well I beg to differ,

The used cars salesman hard sell approach exemplified by Cramer is really annoying and blahhh, plus he is SOOOOOOOOOO damn loud (Roseanne anyone…), he must think he’s doing an informercial for retards, sorry, absolutely no cigar (whatever the price fo the stoogie, Cramer.

Great Show! Definitely lived up to the hype. I had to watch it a couple times over a couple days. Jim was a great guest- I can actually see the wheels turning in his head. Good to see him with a buzz on: did you guys taste some wine before the show? Anyhoo, very entertaining. Hopefully we can see some more investment driven shows.

QOTD: Not sure if I understand it, or if Jim’s question applies, but what if the investment wine was corked:( Then you would definitely have a problem.

Gary, you and Jim Cramer did a fabulous job on episode 499. Loved seeing you both taste the four wines and your reactions to them, especially the Dow’s 1977 Port. Gary, you treat your guests so well and show them a lot of care and respect while they sit beside you.

Can’t wait until episode 500 is shown on Monday.

    Your fellow wine enthusiast,

wow, way to bring the thunder guys. as for the qotd, I don’t know all that much about specific vintages and regions. but I’ve found that talking with my friends, the south american and spanish wines are overlooked by far. Everyone seems to think california a lot and people have discovered australia and new zealand now. but I’ve had two spanish wines recently and they brought the thunder big time. and it wasn’t anything that anyone was saying I need to go buy. so that’s what makes me think that it is still largely undiscovered.

Great energy from both of you! Not sure how the room could contain such star power and amount of BOOOOOOYAHHHHHH coming from the table.

Gary – What a great webisode with Cramer. The problem, however, when we talk about values of wine (which Cramer did not raise) is that there is NO MARKET for an individual collector to sell a bottle despite its appreciation. If I buy ONE bottle of ‘05 Latour, I cannot SELL that bottle 5, 10, 50 years later. Who will buy only 1 bottle? A case, perhaps at auction. It doesn’t matter what a bottle is worth, if I can’t sell it. True?!

  319. July 12, 2008

Wow 3 mad juices in 40 minutes. Did Jim paid for the wine before you corked them?

Ya finally got this lurker to come out into the light GV. How could I help it with the power of one of the greatest money men out there joining forces with my wine guru of the small screen. Love the subject of wine as an investment, though I doubt any wine I purchase will last long enough for me to worry about its cash value.

This episode brought another lurker out, because it has me thinking about wine a little differently. I love drinking wine, especially exploring my palate. My family is Italian – we drink wine with dinner, sure, but we pour the first glass while we cook – including the ones just hanging out in the kitchen – and, well, I don’t want to rat out the lushes but let’s just say there’s a good bit of wine that gets drunk. And, yes, I’m always interested in a good buy because I’d rather be out $50 after a family visit than out $500. But I have never thought about buying wine as an investment. Never.

The main reason why I have not thought of it was touched upon peripherally in this episode. It’s about keeping the wine – i.e., cellaring. How much space could I possibly devote (that’s opportunity cost, right?) to bottles of wine? And that’s a concern without even considering what it might cost to create the right environment (temperature?) in that space. And let’s say I decided that cost was worth it. How would I transport the wine when I move, which I’ll inevitably do every 3-5 years for the foreseeable future?

Gotta love Cramer and Gary V together! Great show. Good idea except for the part that I like to drink the wine and I am not real good at storing it..

But how do we get reliable values for older wines that we do have in the cellar? Thats what I would like to know.

    Jason Schermerhorn

The show was fantastic. Great idea to have Jim Cramer on the show – and really cool of him to come on. Obviously respects you Gary – outstanding effort. Also a subject some of us are interested in, whether we are putting wine down for an event years away or trying to accumulate a wine collection worth something down the road.

    Kudos

In some respects, Gary V is to wine as I am to online video. It’s part of my job to know what’s good. But alot of times that forces me to swirl, taste, and spit so I can get through the day and still have eyeballs. But I watched every minute of this show, some of it twice, and will likely replay it. This is so great!

QOTD: Ovid. $175 a bottle on the initial release? Still no reviews of it. In order to justify that it’s going to have be thought of right away as being pretty much a top 10 cult cab. Odds are likely that it will disappoint, even if it is a good wine. From an investment standpoint, I’d say that all the value is already built into this price. Chances are the price goes down rather than up, especially in this economy.

  339. July 14, 2008

    Harry

A big show as promised. One thing you didn’t mention is the need for proper storage. Buying cases of wine only makes sense if you have somewhere to store them where the temp and humidity can be kept near constant. Keeping them in the china cabinet or the pantry will make them age far too quickly, and the wine will be worthless in a few years. If you have a root cellar that stays cool, or you roll bug like Cramer and have a temp controlled wine room, great, but for those of us who move a lot or live in small apartments should buy to drink, nto invest.

  340. July 14, 2008

    TGSnyder

Wine is for drinking, and not for the portfolio. That being said, I have purchased many of 2005 Burgundy and Bordeaux. If I don’t like them, they go to auction. If I like, they stay in the cellar. I think that this is a point worth mentioning. When you purchase a high-end or even a middle ground wine, there is zero risk if you can resell to, at worst, break even, and in most cases (minus one bottle), earn a little profit for you time, research, and cellaring costs.

  341. July 14, 2008

Gary, I loved the show! I’ve always had a slight bias that wine should be purchased to drink, but the investor in me became really interested in the subject of wine as an investible asset because of this show. I agree that we are heading into unprecedented territory here with respect to rising middle-classes in China, India, etc becoming interested in wine and seeking out the limited amounts of the best wines available.

Great show, though it went on far too long at twice the normal running
time. Thinking about wine as an investment puts a very different spin
on it, and this was educational as well as entertaining.

For anyone who has the patience for it, storing and aging wines can be a
great investment whether your intention is to drink it or sell it.
Think of the satisfaction of drinking a bottle from your own cellar that
has gained in harmony and complexity over the years, then comparing the
price you paid against the current market value.

I think the best wine to short would be any from the brand new vineyard that opened up a few miles from my house called ledgestone vineyard. They are a bunch of jerks, and give the wine world a bad image. I’m sure their wine can only go down in value.

That was a FANTASTIC show! There was so much THUNDER it was frightening (but in a good way). Definitely have Jim back on, Gary. Priceless.

QOTD: I’ll give you the good and the bad. I bought some 1996 Chappottier Hermitage back in 1999 that I sold at 5X the purchase price last year (that would be good). I overpaid for some Shafer Hillside Select in 2001 and last year tried to sell it and only got about 35% return. Ick! But I wouldn’t even consider speculating on California wines anymore.

So I popped 3 Klonopin before I hit play figuring I need something to make me handle the intensity of these two put together. I mean, c’mon, Jim Cramer and Gary Vaynerchuk – together??? That’s wine on crack, dude!

Oh contrare (is that how it’s spelled???) Seriously, this episode was so much fun. I learned. I enjoyed. I acted. (I’m now actively looking at wines in which to invest – never done that before.)

I love the fact that these two can work together. What an intersting pairing of topics – investing and wine!!! Very cool.

For people who leave all of their investing to their broker but always wished they knew how to do it on their own, try this. Invest in wine! How fun!!! If you blow it, drink it!!! I’m sending the link of this to my rich brother!!!

It was such a pleasure to see these two together!

    You go guys!!!

  392. October 8, 2008

    What about reselling…?

You have to give up a 23-30 percent cut in order to sell to brokers or auction.

So even if it goes up 25% you lose all profit to the fees.

Gary, what’s the best way to handle this?

I came across your show while looking for information on Pago Florentino Tempranillo which I really enjoyed and I believe you were taking splinters out of your mouth from the Oak Monster. I had to disagree with your review on that particular wine but you had a lot of good insight and enthusiasm. Then I watch your show with Jim Cramer and then I was able to put my finger on it, your show got that same high energy enthusiasm as Mad Money. Ha ha ha @ the Walmart jokes. Yeah I hate them and refuse to shop there. Ive heard enough about the way they run things to despise them forever. Great, great show. Jim wasnt as animated as I thought he would be and to me thats a good thing because I really cant take that much of him on his show ( Sorry, Jim). The Latour and Dow’s sounded heavenly. I think based on your statements I might try to pick up a 77 or 85 port. Probably too pricy now but we’ll see. QOTD: I have no idea what Jim said. It was half shouting and half rambling. If it was about wines he wants to know to buy and sell at a profit later, I really have no idea. Investing is something I know little about. Even the nice wines I own I dont really have a desire to sell in the future. I bought them to drink them down the line. However, if some of my 05′ Bordeauxs jump to a $1000, thats a different story. :D

Loved seeing the Cramer on the show although I think “investing” in wine is stupid except for those are already in the biz. Way too many variables and cost for the average guy.

Reminds me a bit of when baseball cards were hot, sure it felt great when you opened a $5 pack and found a card “valued” at $50, but good luck trying to find someone to actually buy it at that price, all the dealers sure wouldn’t.

At least with playing the stock market as many of us have done, you can buy/sell at will, the buy/sell price is the same for everyone, and there are very few side costs.

Wow – missed this one the first time around. Powerful! Gary V and Cramer together is almost too much juice for one show … I can relate to Jim; he doesn’t necessarily know wine, but he knows what he likes. Attaboy.

Joe, early 80s dealers bought cards and comics, though I agree a lot of that stuff really was hard to sell in the late 90s early 21st century. For sure.

This episode definitely, DEFINITELY brought the thunder.

    Great show.

Gary, Just watched this now – post economic bust and in the middle of the 2008 Bordeaux initial pricing season. Your predictions seem as bad as Jim Cramer’s. In the long term you might be right, but at this point, this is one funny episode!

    Cheers,

I’ve been rewatching some of the classics as a look back lately, and I’m sorry gary, though I’ve never had a problem with any of your guest choices, this one I cannot support. Cramer has no integrity and an overinflated sense of self. He has staked his reputatoin on some pure and simple illegitimate names and brands. He is either dishonest or has poor judgement or both. From Bear Stearns, to Conico( which he touts on this very show) he was wrong. Now Lenny Dykstra, who he supported, and touted as an investment genius, has been found to be a fraud. I have no reason to believe Cramer is not a fraud himself. He was even outed for illegitimate business practices of his own by Jon Stewart, and he had nothing to say for himself, not even a snarky comeback. Passion is great but it doesnt make up for a lack of principles. I understand and admire your willingness to give people the benefit of the doubt but Cramer is a major Vaynerpazzzzz in my book.

I bought a Rusden Shiraz 2000 for $60 in 2 years it doubled in value. I had a friend who wanted a good deal on port, I told him Vesuvio ‘95 for $50. On Bordeaux I bought 1970 Lafite for $13 at Trader Joe’s in the mid 70’s I passed on Petrus at the same price for the same vintage.( because I was and still will only do 1st growths, which that is not, I like Cheval Blanc, also not a 1st growth but I can drink that and/or make a sweet profit on that as well) The “70 Lafite was crap but I made money on it anyway. The ‘82 vintage of Mouton goes for two grand the ‘81 Petrus I can get for $600.I have made money on Bordeaux consistently but the pricing as of late has got me riled, I like the 2001 vintage over the 2000, the 2002 is crap.I like the 2006 vintage over the 2005, but hating the price. I agree forget 2007. People have indeed lost on the futures gave buying too high, too early. But those are generally people who haven’t even sampled the wine they bought or are going to buy. Those people I can’t feel sorry for. I only buy what I will drink. So I bought a D”Oliveiras Resera Terrrantez 1977 Madeira for just south of $100. If it goes up fine, but I like that better than vintage port. I like tawny port better than vintage but don’t expect to make any money at it. I passed on Screaming Eagle at $300 a bottle, even though it sells for $3300. I didn’t much care for it, as I’ve had other Napa Cabernets south of $100 I liked a lot better, but I’m not even seeking those as investments. I won’t do Burgundies, as they have burned many. But on Bordeaux, I’ve won everytime. I even had a ‘66 Margaux (crap vintage for Margaux) that I paid $30 for that someone broke negligently and he ended having to pay me what it was then worth-$150. So even when I lose, I win.

I loved this show…. the wine was all way outside my price range but an interesting show anyway… I’m not understanding all the negativity in the comments though. I have learned a lot about investing from Cramer and that has led me to have a few months of 40%+ profits and has allowed me to consistently beat the averages (dow, s&p) by 20%-25% annually. I also believe he’s a genuine person why else would he walk away from his hedge fund where he was making a fortune (and making rich people richer) to go into trying to teach normal people to make money on the market. All of his advise (just like Gary’s) is just a starting point. Things like taking price and emotions out of the buying decision. When Jim is wrong about individual stocks he’s frequently not wrong about the sector, and even when he is he’s usually right about many more things than he’s wrong about. Even he tells you to do your own research (taking anything he says as gospel without doing your own research is reckless and stupid just like trusting anyone on investment matters is). When I got to see Jim live in Iowa City he came across as very genuine and honest and very intelligent and his picture of the markets was very close to my own at that point even though my trading style was considerably different than the one he preached by then. Also in response to the comment that oil was back at $60 last novemeber… true, but it got to $140 before then after it was at $100 (so at $100 the trade wasn’t over, there was still 40% profit to be made at that point)

I have purchased many 2005 Bordeaux, from well known appellations. My question in, as an investment where would one turn to sell them in 5, 10, 20 years? thanks.
