Too much honking going on on this episode! Don’t sensor the man!

I missed this episode by a few days… the day after you were in Portland I took off for San Francisco and went backpacking for 7 days in the Emigrant Wilderness from July 4th – July 12th. I had an awesome time, but too bad this taping wasn’t just a few days later!

BTW, the day after we got back we went wine tasting in Lodi… a very interesting experience, much different from what I’m used to in Oregon. Glad I did it, but out of the ~50 or so wines I had, I brought home zero. Bummer.

Super episode. Kudos on #500. I was surprised at the poor rating you gave the Torre Muga Rioja 2004 (89+). 96 by Jay Miller. 95 by Wine Spectator (#11 in the Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2007). At $70 bones, it’s a tough buy decision. Perhaps you could start a new show called The Wine Challenge where you, Wine Advocate and Wine Spectator do wine tastings and compare the results against a studio audience.

When Gary was tasting the Bodegas Primicia and asked “Who really hated this wine?” and he commented to the guy raising his hand like crazy…that was me. Obviously I had not been using the spit buckets and had been “tasting” some mighty fine wines all night up to that point. I must commend all the Vayniacs who showed up. All the BYOB wines I tried were fantastic. GREAT LIVE SHOW!!

Another solid show. I just started watching the full shows with the release of the reserves on revision3 and I’m definitely a convert now. Purchased your book yesterday and so far its highly distracting while I study for the bar. Also I really enjoyed your episode with Jim Cramer. It got me really interested in investing in wine. I couldn’t disagree with your rating more. Why be so afraid of the oak? The fruit still comes through, as you even admitted. I love wines that don’t need a meal to “complete” them, and this is it.

Gary, good show, congrats on 500. When you’re watching the episode back in NJ, you may notice that you used the phrase “that being said…” several times. You may wish to self-edit when speaking in the future. That phrase is a real turn off (for me at least: I don’t know if anyone else is bothered). It means nothing: total waste of breath and detracts from your message. Haven’t noticed it in the previous 499 episodes very often, if at all. Keep up the good work.

Cannot comment on Jets. Sorry! But what I wanted to say is Rioja wines are great, very fruity and powerful. Just got back from there.
But when we speak about Rioja, we usually think of reds. What about whites? I had a chance to try one Chardonnay from that region. Thunder! The most interesting wine experience for me so far. Very unexpected flavors, well balanced fruit and oak, and it was so creamy and lemony fresh at the same time. Just great!

Love rioja, so this was an interesting show. there are tons of really good riojas under 20 bones (i know bc my budget doesnt allow me to try any higher priced and i am very happy with the ones i have tried). My pick for anyone interested i a very good and low priced bottle is the venta la ossa mano a mano tempranillo, a steal at 13 bones!!!

Great show, great energy… wonder if we can ever see an “unrated” version, with out all the bleeping bleeps.

Torre Muga: the oak monster on the nose goes away with a couple of hours of decanting, and then it really brings some vegetal and dirt/leaves/forest thunder. You should try it again sometime.

Kinda the opposite of what you are always saying, trust your own pallet not some wine geek with his own podcast Although if it was that bad… maybe its justified. I am stoked you got Kevin Rose to show up, why not get him on one of your shows? Kind of a podcast celebrity endorsement if you will. It would bring a ton of Diggnation viewers, if they aren’t already watching both. I hope I am not being redundant cause I’m a bit of a lurker, maybe he’s already been on???

I was at your book signing in Seattle but they ran out before I could get a copy and I didn’t bring the one I bought from Amazon. Don’t know if you heard but Seattle had major thunderstorms the following week which is quite rare in the NW.

Liked the SF show but I kept expecting the barrels behind you to come rolling out and watching you Donkey Kong over them.

The Jets aren’t very good but the 49ers are awful (NY: 10, SF: 6).
It will be a much different story when the Jets come to Seattle (SEA: 24, NYJ: 17). Hopefully I’ll see you at your tailgate party.

The Rioja tasting was eye-opening, and confirmed that my palate is very
different from Gary’s. This wine tasted more like mud and wet leaves to
me than anything else. The fruit was completely subdued, which to me is
a fatal flaw. “Food-friendly” should not mean that the wine is
undrinkable without food.

Thanks to Gary for bringing the thunder for 500 episodes, and for
encouraging everyone to trust their own palate. Here’s to the next 500!

Also, I liked the crowd the least from this show, a lot of people just seemed to be mumbling in the background. You also seemed to be pretty pumped up and in super swear mode. Was the crowd a bunch of sailors?

Thank you for making 500 episodes. I’ve watched every one since I got hooked last year, and you pretty much make my day.

Well done & Congrats! I was at CrushPad for the show and from the camera view of Gary it really doesn’t do the size of the crowd justice. It was hundreds and hundreds ‘and’ hundreds of people packed in there. I was worried that we wouldn’t be able to hear Gary on the video but his voice came thru just fine. Since you mentioned Kevin Rose and Rev3 … You should have him on WLTV some time as a guest … I know that you recorded some sort of vine vid. with him (I’ve stopped cutting foil because of that … The yank-it-the-hell-off trick is *way* easier!), but he needs be on WLTV.

GaryVee, what can I say? That was the best episode of WLTV I have seen. You have one helluva outgoing personality, but putting in front of a live audience makes it SO MUCH BETTER!

You need to do more live shows like this. Your show is great when it’s just you sitting in front of Mott, but when you get in front of an audience like you did in SF the entertainment value of the show increases by 10! Yet, it didn’t lose any of the informative side of the show!

The only I was surprised, and disappointed, about was that the show was only 20 minutes long. I figured that your 500th show that was taped in SF in front of a live audience was going to be more than just 3 wines.

All in all, loved the show, and hope that you do more live appearances in the future.

Loved your live show and your energy and enthusiasm, but how about cooling it a bit with some the bad language. You don’t know how influential you are and I know kids DO watch. You are the JOE NAMATH of wine and you know how kids look up to the jocks. YES, how did you know I am a teacher (music) – but I’m not a prude. Anyhoo, I’m sure that comment probably took me out of the running for a wrist band, but I calls ‘em like I see’s ‘em – just like you do tasting wine.
I’ve learned so much from you and trust your palate more than RP, JM, etc. I have your book (signed from Woot!) and hope to taste some of the more inexpensive wines inside (did I mention I was a TEACHER.)

Congratulations on the 500th! You’ve come a long way with your drive and passion! I hope to see the 1000th!

It was a weird wine choice for an episode in SF. Although the Torre Muga was probably more similar to the Cali Cabs they probably are more used to. Good job calling it like it is, though. There’s definitely a difference in the new super fruity over oaked Riojas trying to please the “American palate”. You don’t get that many of them in their native Spain, they keep the more traditional for them. I much rather have Muga’s more traditional regular Reserva or Seleccion Especial. But to each its own!

#499 with Jim Cramer was brilliant- informative, funny, and tons of mutual respect. How about more of that and less of the Hoke Monster?

I’m sure it was great to be there in person but not a great show to watch. What’s with the bleeps?!?! Also, the “guests” didn’t add much. And the wine was meh. I think the Boston episode was a better live show and episode 499 was a better overall episode. But still a HUGE fan…keep up the good work.

I was lucky enough to attend the taping & it was so much fun. Thanks to Crushpad for hosting such a great event. Crowd was a little obnoxiously loud during taping due to the fact that there were like 300 bottles of wine being drunk beforehand. Gary was great in dealing with the crowd tho–you should definitely do more live shows. Thanks for making wine more accessible & less snobby. Congratulations!

I’m from the DR and i truly have to say It’s been 3 hours since i’ve seen the 500 Episode and I’m still happy I saw it. Best one I’ve seen so far. It’s got everything, the good, the bad and the ugly line up, the guy that’s throwing up in the back, the guy that’s so exited or boozed up on wine that makes a mess at the back, the girls in the front waiting for a complement or a shot at the camera or a shot at the expensive wine.

I finally get to see the episode number 500. I thought it would be longer.

I have always been keen on Spanish wines, specially Riojas (I studied in Pamplona which is to the east of the rioja region where they make good strong wines-Navarra) and I agree with you on the bordeaux compatibility. they go well with food. I have tried very bad wines from around la mancha or ribera del duero, but only two or three. They are still my favorite wines I believe with the exception of Monte Xanic, Torres Alegre, wines from Bordeaux and Beaujolais.

I’ve had some pretty good Riojas but what I’d like to know is how well do they keep?

This has always been a question for me. Which varietals keep and which ones don’t? We all know Bordeau can keep for 10 years. How about Riesling? Rioja? Cabernet? Chardonay? Merlot?

In general, what can I keep in my cellar to age and what should be consumed as soon as possible?

Hey Gary,
Hope you don’t mind the honesty here. #500 sounded like you were much much much too pumped up. Sounded like you’d been drinking a bit more than you’d like as well (we know you tooooo well!). And it looks like you got a little out of hand with the audience at times (big crowds, even when quiet, are loud. Especially when drinking & celebrating), etc.
No questions from the audience? You got a lot of great feedback regarding your q&a from Boston… I think you were just wrapped up and rolling with the emotion of #500.

Sound = fine. You’re still finding your way with production. I didn’t mind it at all.

Def shorter vid than I expected too, but it probably took an amazing amount of effort to do what you did there anyways, understood.

Again, sorry about the honesty. But if there is anyone who could appreciate the value of an honest comment (even if it’s negative) it’s def you.

Met you with my wife at the Boston show. I was the one who interrupted your last sniffy-sniff with the line, “Smells like a Celtics’ victory!” You were nothing but fantastic to us and we’ll continue the daily support.

Having finally seen this episode on November 5/08, it is my second favourite after the appearance on October 30 of Jancis Robinson. While I sometimes find Gary’s very animated style mildly off-putting, I think in front of a live (and it would appear well-refreshed) audience it works very well. As always (even when sick), Gary’s wine evaluations are original and detailed.

In spite of the (hardly unexpected) disparaging of my favourite sports team the New England Patriots, this was a great show. Excellent visuals throughout. I hope episode 600 will also be done live. Notwithstanding the wine remarks, I think Gary’s skills as a keynote public and motivational speaker were shown to excellent advantage.

Belated congratulations.

QOTD: I think the Jets will win by 7 points, and the 49ers coach will drop his pants in public in disgust.

Come on Gary, of course your not diggin the 2004 Torre Muga, you actually LIKE wine! Try the Muga Prado Enea Gran Reserva, its traditional style with a little push forward in ripeness without being eaten by the oakmoster or over extracted. Even better, why not do a Rioja Traditionalist show moving progressively forward: Lopez de heredia, then La Rioja Alta or CUNE, then Prado Enea.. etc. Now THAT would be a great way to show what Rioja is really all about!
