Thanks for turning me on to Woot. This is why I love the Thunder Show, I learn something from every show!

QOTD: Nothing, unless it’s really bad…

A very good episode. I continue to learn with each episode. Kudos to Dave.

QOTD – bread and cheese I think.

QOTD: if tasting wines, i actually like to smell coffee beans/grinds, more than having anything to eat or drink!

Gary, great show! Love that you brought woot on, great call. Dave S was a great guest.

    Gary, where’s your comment?

I’m totally behind wine.woot, it’s great that you had them on the show. (As people have said, it would be nice to let Dave get a word in.) =)

QOTD: I only tend to try to cleanse my palate when I feel like it’s getting tired or when I feel like I’m going from a heavier, richer wine back to a lighter, more delicate wine. When I do want to cleanse my palate though, I go for just some plain bread.

Nice show, always love the zins even if both of these are not my style.

QOTD: Has to be bottled water for me.

QOTD: I prefer still water and/or plain saltines or wafers. Sometimes, I don’t clean in between tastings.
When I try too many in a short time that is when I really feel like cleansing is important. Maybe I just experience palate fatigue really early. I don’t do well after about 12 or 13 wines.

QOTD: I never really care to clean my palate…if tasting alot of wines, I may rinse with a little water but thats about it.

Really wish Woot (or any online store) could ship to Pennsylvania but I still occasionally keep an eye on their site. Looking forward to moving to a state where they (and Wine Library of course) can ship to.

QOTD: no cleansing required! Woot is a great concept but unfortunately won’t ship to my state (if you’re checking out the site for the first time, check the shipping policies before you get too excited.)

QOTD: In Peynaud’s benchmark book, Le Gout de Vin, he argues that for accuracy the wine taster should not cleanse the palate in between wines, so that the palate remains accustomed to alcohol, acid, and other common “vinous” flavors. The first taste of a set, says Peynaud, is the least reliable.

Only when your palate is tired should you drink some water, eat some neutral bread, and take a 10-15 minute break.

I tend to go with this strategy, with an added rule for myself that I try to drink as much water as the volume of wine I taste (even when spitting). For a palate cleanser I prefer a well-made, plain baguette (not sourdough) for the simple reason that it is my second-favorite bread of all time. My first favorite is naan, but I’m afraid even an ‘89 Haut Brion would lose to the naan in a side-by-side tasting :)

Enjoyed this episode. I’m a big fan of wine.woot–those of you who haven’t been involved, need to get with ‘em. And, as a customer of both wine.woot and wine library, it is a true pleasure to do business with both. Both are honest, trustworthy, reliable businesses….not always the case with other wine retailers, internet or otherwise.

    QOTD: Bread. Cheese. Water.
