Yes indeed this was a classic GV episode. Had everthing you are all about all rolled up into one show.

    QOTD: I’ll work on it

Love Gigondas! Quite a popular and widely available Rhone Red over here in the UK. Much better value than most Papes that are a few quid more expensive.

Patrick Lesec Cuvee Romaine is lovely.

I’m definitely going to have to hunt for a Gigondas. I’ve never even heard of it before this.

QOTD: Don’t have the rules nailed down yet, but the name could be Vay-Ner-Upchuck.

Gary, maybe it’s a Bottega del Vino.

QOTD: How about every time Gary V slaughters the pronounciation of a Wine, a geographical region, or any other word on the show, especially how he misprnouces the state of Oregon, CA, Vayniacs have to sip and not spit.

#1 and 2 are the same (thank you daniel o) so i’ll pick both of them. if i had to choose just one though, it would be #1. HILARIOUS!

  21. July 21, 2008

    Mark Tolerico

I don’t think I’m creative enough to come up with a drinking game.

How about every time you say “Thunder”, “Obnoxious” or “Big Ups”… you have to drink!

  22. July 21, 2008

    M

In the past year, my palate has enjoyed wines from Gigondas, Vacqueyras. Vinsobres, Fitou. Good show.

QOTD: dunno but I’ll play….There has to be an Oak Monster and a Fruit Bomb somewhere. And a PAZZZ.

  23. July 21, 2008

    Kevin

I have tasting notes on the 2000 Montirius, and it was a serious disappointment. It may have been mistreated. So I may have to try a more recent vintage to give it another chance. I certainly am interested in the fruit-bomb-old-world-vibe.

QOTD: The ‘thunder-show-inspired’ drinking game around here is called ‘4 wines and a plate’ – our monthly blind tasting and food event that brings family and friends together to get passionate about wine. It’s not what you’re looking for, I know, but it is what it is.

    Gary,

Thanks for the thanks. Believe me, your work is a true public service, and it is truly appreciated.

Idea for drinking game: Drink twice when you do that little nod (my favorite gesture of yours). Or have two bottles ready and open the more expensive one when the Jets win. That should save me a lot of money.

    So long, Shockey!

Gary, great show. That really brought the Thunder. Love the energy. I’ll have to think about the QOTD.

    Drinking Game Idea:

Take a drink every time Gary fails to finish his sentence because he’s distracted with a new thought or idea.

Take two drinks when he gets distracted by anything to do with football or wrestling

Take three drinks when he gets distracted by someone walking in the hallway.

    PRW

    Gary,
Great show. I watched #1 and #3 from the contest (link for #2 is broken) and they were both disturbing. Can’t wait to check out the Gigondas. The drinking game definetely needs to involve some drinking when you mention punching someone in the neck. Not that I’m a violent person, but there is only one other person I know who uses that unusual expression.

  36. July 21, 2008

    Tom

QOTD: I can only think of two rules:

    1) Everytime Gary uses a number to reference a Jets player, add those two number together and drink (in sips) the sum.
    2) Everytime Gary doesn’t spit out the wine, finish whatever is left in your drink.

If people play this game with wine, it may be suicidal.

  37. July 21, 2008

    RANDI

    Gary!!
    I LOVE the qotd!
OK, I have so many ideas swirling in my head. How about a game with the same name as your book..this is cross-promotion. Gary Vaynerchuks 101 Wines..object of the game is to acquire all the different varietals of wine available..pieces shaped like wine glass, bottle of wine, corkscrew, WLTV wristband, etc. Land on spaces that you can pick a card from a wine cellar door that you need to open…and the card can say “youve just obtained a vineyard in the south of france, blah blah blah.. lolol I could go on and on Gary!!!
And the game can be played as real wine drinking game as well….
    (Ok, stopping now…)

I never had a Gigondas and will seek out the 2004 Tardieu Laurent Gigondas pronto!

  38. July 21, 2008

I continue to be amazed at the number of wines available that I know nothing about. I continue to appreciate your efforts to make these wines known.

The contest I would choose #1 but the links for #2 did not work.

QOTD – the name would be “Changing the Wine World” and would involve different wines and points deducted when you land on the fruit bomb square!

qotd: I like RANDI’s idea of like a Settlers of Catan or card game based on wines. You could even go Risk-style and grow your own fruit bombs. Sim-Winery. You could lose points when the oak monster attacks.

real qotd: Anytime Gary gives you a shout out, like the CKCs, the CC, different states, you drink a glass.

    #1 definitely.

QOTD: Every time a wine is scored 85 and Mott pans the camera to the jersey you have to drink your glass. The number of Z’s in Pazzz equals the number of drinks you have to take.

  50. July 21, 2008

    stevo

I attempted to watch videos 1 & 3 and have two comments:

    1) Lame; and

    2) Way too long. Are you kidding me? 11 and 16 minutes respectively? I’d be shocked if anyone can make it all the way through these videos.

I can’t believe these are 2 of the 3 finalists.

I reserve judgment on video 2 when Mott links it up accurately, but, if it is around 5 minutes or so and is slightly witty, it will get my vote.

  51. July 21, 2008

drinking game- each time Gary spits a wine the player take 1 drink(if the wine is good enough for Gary to swallow that’s 2 drinks.)
-each time Gary says Mott that’s 1 drink
-each time Gary names a fruit or says the word fruit that’s 1 drink

  52. July 21, 2008

    The Original Marc

QOTD: I’m think titles sometimes take away from substance as a whole, so we’ll simply call it The WLTV Drinking Game (best I could come up with; I’m not thinking and am just winging it). A few rules off the top of my head:
    Description before pour:
    - Gary refers to the wines as “interesting” – 1 drink
    - Gary refers to it/them as “under the radar” – 2 drinks
    - Gary goes off on a tangent – 1 drink (this applies throughout the episode)
    - Gary shows off his French wine pronunciation abilities – laugh like Maurice Chevalier, then take 1 drink

    Color:
    - Gary says a wine has good color – 1 drink
    - Gary says a wine has great color – 2 drinks
    - Gary says a wine has bad color – pinch yourself. You’re probably dreaming. Then pinch one of your friends because they are also probably dreaming.

    Smell:
    - When Gary says sniffy sniff – obviously shout out the words with him, then throw out a weird scent he might say (such as “hot girl’s dorm room”). If he says it, you choose someone to take 5 drinks.
    - Gary refers to the “taste” or “flavor” of the bouquet – 2 drinks

This is just the beginning, my short attention span is getting the best of me. A few general ones though to finish off:
    - “Mott, link it up!” – link drinking arms with the closest person while taking a drink.
    - For every shout out – shout “Mazel Tov!” and take a drink
    - Gary mentions a wristband – Take 2 drinks. However, if you are wearing a WLTV wristband, you are safe and don’t have to drink (but still can).

  53. July 21, 2008

So far my vote is for #1 but we need to give MarkF a chance. Link it up Mott.

  54. July 21, 2008

    Adam J

I’ve never gotten jiggy with the gigo but I promise I will soon.

QOTD: Drink 3 (fieldgoal?) when a cork hits the camera. Gary swallows – finish the glass. Vaynerpazzz – drink the number of Z’s. Drink 1 every time Gary plays with his sleeves. Drink 1 to the health of each person receiving a shoutout.

That’s just a starter list. I watch during the afternoon usually though, so maybe a light game is better.

  55. July 21, 2008

    Adam

QOTD- Hard to play a good drinking game with good wine, but here is a drinking game nonetheless.

    1. Sniffy sniff: drink 1
    2. Mentions cat pee/fecal matter: drink 5 (if he says he likes it, finish glass)
    3. Oak monster makes an appearance: drink 5 (if he embraces oak monster, drink 10)
    4. “Mott link it up” or says “Mott”: drink 1
    5. Mott comes on camera: drink 5
    6. Mentions jets: drink 1 Mentions Kellen Clemens: drink 5 and laugh
    7. Mentions pro wrestling: drink 1
    8. PAZZ: drink 1
    9. Major Pazz: drink 2
    10. Major pazz then adds a corresponding number of Z’s “Pazz with 9 Zz’s”: drink the number of Zs
    11. Fruit bomb reference “fakey” “skittles” etc: drink each corresponding reference
    12. Doesn’t Spit: drink 3
    13. Yells at lurkers: drink 3
    14. Curses: Drink 1
    15. Big ass glass: Drink 3
    16. Spills: drink 5

    fun stuff Gary!

Video #3 was my personal fave.

QOTD: every time Mott appears on camera, down a glass.

Everytime Gary has a random conversation in the middle of a diatribe with someone off camera (nott Mott) chug half a glass.

  58. July 21, 2008

    Great episode, GV!

Drinking game: I become intoxicated just listening to your voice.

    And, #3 gets my vote.

I liked all three videos. I was sure #1 was a shoo-in to get my vote on Eagle jersey alone. The number #2 guy was good but I felt he needed to stretch things further. A parody needs to be more outrageous than the thing it’s poking fun at. It was gradual, #3 slowly started to win me over. It took the lead with “the rabid donkey of my childhood” and pulled away with “the oak monster is singing to me”.

    I vote for #3

Agree, great show. I need to buy a Gig 3-Pack of tonight’s episode to compare our notes.

QOTD: I’m not into drinking contests unless you want to count drinking pitchers of beers in my younger days through a straw and the first one to finish was the champion!

On a more serious note, I would propose a “Super Bowl of Wines” contest where you have at least ten of the Top 10 Wine Spectator Wines for the past, say, 10 years and the questions are either 1) Super Bowl related or 2) WLTV Episodes, i.e. Who will crush the Patriots on Nov 2, 2008? or 2) Which episode did Gary start using the Jets bucket as his spitoon? The winner of each question gets to choose a “taste” from one of the Top 10 wines. Grand Prize winner gets to take home the bottle of their choice.

    Cheers to Gigs!

#1 gets my vote since #2 got the intro incorrect. It’s not “universe most passionate” but “internet’s” and #3 didn’t have a snowball’s chance in Hades since I saw that punk Brady on a Patriots bucket! He’s kidding right?

  79. July 21, 2008

    Mark E.

Gotta vote for Video #1. Watched all 3, and #1 definitely had the most energy and was the most original and entertaining spoof.
As for a drinking game, I’d say – if you are alone:
Take 1 sip of vino every time Gary says “Ahhh!” for the oak monster
Take 2 sips every time Gary says, “Whooo!”
Take 3 sips every time Gary mentions a WWF wrestler AND/OR a memory from his childhood.

If you have a group, at least 4 people, queue up a few episodes of WLTV. Pour a different varietal of wine for each person there, and 1 must be a Dessert wine. (Example, for 4 people: 1 glass of Chat’-du-pape, 1 of Sauternes, 1 of a California Cab, and 1 of a German Riesling) Each time one of the following ‘events’ happens, everyone takes a sip of the glass in front of them and passes it to their left. (and wipes the glass, obviously)
    1)Mention of the Oak Monster
    2)Mention of “Fruit Bomb”
3)Mention of “Old World Fans” OR “New World Fans”
    4)Gary rates a wine 85 to 95 points
When the following event happens, the person with the dessert wine makes everyone else finish the glass in front of them and he/she can do what they want with the dessert wine left in their own glass. This is the end of a round and the contestants refill the glasses and continue playing rounds until the end of the videos, the end of the wine at hand, or when everyone is sufficiently sloshed:
    1) Gary Rates a wine 95+ points or better -OR- Gary rates a wine

  80. July 21, 2008

    Mark E.

    (to complete my truncated post
    …Gary rates a wine less than (

    QTD…some thoughts for the game…

I’d start with the 1) board, and 2) wine aroma wheel(s) or dice.

The board would be some kind of representation of a “Vayner Valley” or the name of your choice for a fictitious wine region. The wheel would be either a simple set of dice OR a set of wine spinning “aroma wheels”, wherein the aroma terms are labeled with your own Gary V. vocab (e.g., “pig poop” instead of “farmyard” or “methane”, etc.). Each player would takes a turn at spinning the wheels (or rolling dice) to get a score. There would be numbers given for the resulting aromas (or, if using die, the numbers are the numbers). The higher the score, the farther through “Vayner Valley” the player progresses.

Passing through an appellation is rewarded by receiving a case of wine. Remaining in an appellation too long (for too many turns) takes a case of wine from the player.

Some wine trivia questions would come into play on certain spots on the course of the valley. Correct answers would reward Vayniac knowledge with an automative advance to the next appellation and/or a case of wine. Incorrect answers would move the player back one appellation or some number of steps/places within an appellation. Note that an appellation could be comprised of the basic steps of wine-making, so that it would take some time to pass-through a given appellation.

With the map concept, the WLTV crew could have lots of fun naming the appellations in Vayner Valley (e.g., “Skittleford”, “Chateau ’nuff de Poops”, etc.). You could take this further –in a Monopoly direction– by allowing players to buy/rent Chateaux. That would make for a more complex game, maybe not the right approach, since I’m guessing this will be –whether intended or not– a drinking game.

Also, fun little rules like advancing on the map (one appellation through the valley) for landing on special nodes on the map (example: “decanting before drinking”) would also be nice.

Also, Vayniac nicety would be allowing players to pick what type of palate they have (i.e., their palate is their game piece), so that a “Fruit bomber” palate would get scores higher than the “Veggie palate” for a given score/spin on the aroma-flavor wheel.

    I’ve written too much! This is word-bomb of a comment…so, I’ll stop.

Great to see you back in the thunder saddle GV! Really excellent energy today! And thanks for the new wristband btw. It made my Saturday!

And as for the contest, video #3 wins. A GV alter-ego from Boston is just too good to pass up. Plus the Vinnie T. photo had me laughing.

    QOTD: A palate primer-

Drink 1 for each shout out.
Drink 2 for every “Mott link it up.”
Drink 3 for every mention of fecal matter (great one Adam)!
Drink 4 when GV rearranges his shirt.
Drink 5 when GV mentions a contest.
Drink 5 if GV is on the couch- it’s Friday, you’ve got the weekend!
Finish your glass when GV doesn’t spit.
Anytime GV mentions a Pats player, finish your glass.

I vote for #3 however, I really liked Mark F also. He nailed some of your mannerisms! The Vinny, Big Ass Glass and Yellowtail decided it for me though. I laughed harder at #3, even though I agree he is a little creepy.

QOTD: I would have to think about it, but I like the idea of a board game, or at least have the rules written somewhere. There are great ideas on the comments, but who the hell could remember all the rules when you are drinking?

QOTD: I suggest some sort of combination of “Adam” and “The Original Marc” drinking game rules…those were both funny as hell and really could be put to good “use” during an episode.

As for the vote, I’ll take curtain #3…go Pats! (even though you cheated AND blew the perfect season.) – IT’S a NEW SEASON!!!

    a really, really fun episode!

  85. July 21, 2008

    Adam J

    I vote for video #3.
Qotd: Every time that Gary makes a reference to a classic old line from WLTV like “the deer you hit with your car..” everyone playing must describe the wine they are drinking in a similar fashion. The least amusing and graphic description has to finish the glass they have. Thanks for the episode!

Gotta be #3. QOTD= I need a little think time, but i will get a good one for the drinking game

  88. July 21, 2008

    Normanzo

Ah- post-script to my previous post: I forgot the drinking part! When a player completes a given appellation, he can then direct the previous player to either 1) take a sniffy-sniff, OR 2) Give it a ‘whirl. If he directs the previous player to take a sniffy-sniff, all other players must “Give it a whirl”. This allows for the advancing player to bestow some mercy upon a player by allowing him/her the pleasure of sniffing the wine without having to take a forced drink (not that taking a drink is a bad thing at all).

  89. July 21, 2008

    DaveyDonut

    I vote for video #1!

The other two were simply trying too hard to mimic exactly and as a result lost out on creativity.

QOTD: I don’t want to have a drinking game for good wine… I’ll do that with Pabst.

    #1 the funniest!

It’s got to be Juice Library.

    Pat Sissons

Well that was really cool Gary, i was watching the shout outs and said to myself, “hey that sounded like my name… hey that IS my name!” Anyways, even without the shoutout this was a killer ep, I do like the fruit bombs and I can only hope that one of the stores around here is carrying the Tardieu Laurent Gigondas. (to be honest, i’ll probably take a look for the Montirius as well).

QOTD: I always thought a beer pong for wine would be neat, you know with corks and glasses.

One last thing, i will have a large announcement sometime in the next few weeks. Things are still being worked on right now, but it’s something that i think you’ll like. I’ll keep you posted as details become finalized.

  93. July 21, 2008

    FedorP

I have a drinking game idea I wanted to develop since I run a pick up line site… It’s pretty simple, it’s truth or dare with pickup lines. You pick a card from a deck with a pick up line and they either try the line on a girl or guy or you get to decide what their punishment is… buy a drink, chug a beer, wine…etc. You can also have a second deck with dares so it’s random. What do ya think?

  94. July 21, 2008

    Terrance

I love Chat-neuf so was happy to see u do the GIGonDAS!

Choco, btw, is what Japanese often call chocolate. But the chocotaco sounds good.

WLTV Drinky Drink Game! Hmm… empty glass every time Gary mentions fruit and animal carcass in same sentence ;-)

  95. July 21, 2008

    Rowland

Yo I will Muff up Oklahoma City if they don’t chill with their Veynerism plagiarism! And by the way, did you just say “Lavender?” NO NO NO bro its “Violets,” don’t let that frenchy tell you how to describe wine, your an American!
    qotd, uuuuh i been watching all the old episodes starting at # 1 to try to document how your shtic comes together. at first i wanted to see when you started saying “sniffy sniff,” but so far i been also looking for; the standard intro “Hello everybody and welcome … Veeeeey – Neeeeeer – Chuckkkk … aka the internet’s most passionate wine show.” ; the Oak monster; Pazzzzzzz ; your outro “you with a little bit of me … ” ; big league chew refferences, official predictions as to where a wine will be in X amount of years ; shoutouts ;
those are probably good starters … but ask yourself, are drinking games (or getting drunk in general) the real reason to drink wine?

o also check this stuff out
    “Glace’ de Vino” ice cream
    glacedevino.com
im eating the raspberry merlot cheesecake flavor, its really good! and its made in NY! no i dont work for them, i got it at Hanafords, who i also dont work for cause i aint got no jobby.

No question on the contest winner… ’tis numero uno (#1).

We don’t need no wine drinken game, ’cause games must have rules, and man, it’s like trusting your PAL, no damn wine drinken rules allowed!!!

Gotta agree with SteveW on that one. I didn’t think any of them were particularly good. Funny parts in the first one, half-funny parts in the third; but nothing worth a free trip to France IMHO.

I’m making my drinking game just based on the mottster.
sip every time gary says “Mott”
sip ever time you can here Mott’s voice
drink a glass every Mott gets to taste the wine
start chugging the bottle when Mott is on camera

    Mott FTW!

  112. July 21, 2008

    Karen

    I vote for #3.

I also want that giant glass.

  113. July 21, 2008

    Lindsay

#2 – he nailed it. also, who doesn’t want free tix to the jets?

QOTD – call game: DrinkGV or LogOff

drink every time one of the following events occurs…

EVENT / # of Drinks or Sips
    - Mott makes a face (which we’d depend on Gary) / 1
    - Mott speaks / 1
    - Mott tastes a wine / 1
    - Mott likes a wine / 3
Every time Gary mentions the word:
    - Vayniaks / 1
    - coconut / 2 (if followed by “Pina Coloda” 2 more)
    - eucalyptus / 2
    - fruit bomb / 1
    - banana / 2
    - poop / 2
    - Yellow Tail / 1
    - Jets / 1
    - ‘reference to his book’ or tour / 1
    Each time Gary:
    - does not wear a t-shirt / 1 (once per show)
    - does not spit a wine out / 1 (each time he does not do it)
    - ranks a wine 98 plus points or below 50 points

could come up with more…but you get the idea!

    NUMBER 2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  125. July 22, 2008

    Robin C

I vote for #3, but it was very close. Nobody does the show quite as effortlessly as Gary though.
QOTD: I agree with KittyLitter. We don’t need no stinking drinking games. We’re a class act. Drinking games are for tequila shots, not complex, multi-layered, intelligently composed, terroir driven wines.

  126. July 22, 2008

    thefinn

    I vote 1.

  127. July 22, 2008

    Roberto

I didn’t think any were particularly great… although obviously a lot of work into the videos. My vote is for #2.

QOTD: how about a little money as well, like a monopoly type game where you buy vineyards and have little “Gary says” cards which make you drink bad wine. If you get enough dough, you can buy Le Pin, otherwise, you gotta hang with 2 buck chuck right where Baltic Avenue is, and instead of the Jail/Just Visiting, you get to drink a halfbottle of wine if you land there… i dunno, something like that….

  128. July 22, 2008

    nhan

All funny in different ways, but #2 nailed Gary. So #2.

Good show, haven’t tried a Gigondas yet, but I’ve got a Vacqueyras on hand I’m anxious to open. I’m loving the Rhone wines I’m discovering this summer, from France AND my CA foothills! ;)

I thought Juice Library #1, brought the most creativity (and I really laughed at the Color Purple reference)

  138. July 22, 2008

    Tommy S

    OWEN! NUMBER ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  139. July 22, 2008

  140. July 22, 2008

im glad to hear someone besides me breaks wine glasses!!! I break them all the time! drinking games-that is freshmen year in college-never really enjoyed them….

  141. July 22, 2008

    RonD

Great show – I’m a big fan of southern Rhone and Gigondas and vacqueyras.

I vote for number 3 but number 1 was a close second

QOTD: I may need to think about this awhile. There would have to be some setup involved, one doesn’t simply play a wine drinking game without having some planning. I suppose you could but I’m not sure how it would work – maybe this is actually part of the game? I see some kind of cards involved where players draw cards to narrow blind wines??

  142. July 22, 2008

    Jglizock

#1 is the best….It’s supposed to be a spoof not a complete imitation!

  143. July 22, 2008

    Paul V

To start: All of the finalists did a superb job. Number 3 with his “yellowtail – not sure if you can find this” was hilarious.

Number 2: His intro was brilliant. Hilarious.

But my vote goes to the Juice Library with his episode 182 reenactment of the environment changing your palate that really took the cake.

My vote is for number 1.

As far as the drinking game goes: there is a LOT of potential here.

Throwing corks at the camera – drink
    “85″ – finish glass, repour
Action figures fall down – two drinks
When YOU drink instead of spit – drink full glass
mentions of cassis – at least two drinks

    I’ll think of some more.

  144. July 22, 2008

    leiyah

does anyone know the meaning of spoof?
#1 is my pic it’s the only spoof
    Oh yeah boo pats!

If Gary is the guy I think he is 1 takes it!

  145. July 22, 2008

    J Woodson

#1 is the definate winner! #2 & #3 were good but they were imitating too much. #1 was an actual spoof.

Yeah I drink Gigondas.. I’d drink more if you and your CRACK team would send me my free shipping code.

Gary. Are you slipping? Do you have a more powerful nostral? Left or right. Whats up with the taxes?

    Tax man!

NO FREE SHIPPING CODE MAN!> I’ll send you a 5th copy of my receipt. I love your shows, owever I’m starting to question you biz.

  157. July 22, 2008

    wine-ot

GV-QOTD-I have forever wanted to make a mini video series of “wine bottle tears”. Often times after a pour, a wine drips a drop across the label and it’s beautiful. If at all possible, when this occurs, I suggest that you include this in the drinking game. Never heard of Gigondas, but thanks for another great show!

  158. July 22, 2008

    Chris Stone

  162. July 22, 2008

    Richard Ritter

Gotta check out the Gigondas! Loved the cork in the lens at the end, nice touch!

My vote #1 #1 #1! and here’s why…it was creative!!! #2 was disjointed like Joe Thiesman’s leg, and #3 had Patriots’ crap in it which lost my vote immediately!

QOTD: Game name: Bring the Thunder, Rule one: if Gary tastes wood everyone eats a handful of Grape Nuts. Rule two: if Gary dosen’t spit in the Jets bucket everyone finishes what’s in thier glass, Rule three: if Gary asks Mott to taste the wine, everyone trades glasses.

  163. July 22, 2008

    Phil G

Welcome back… Dark Knight was great!

QOTD – assign people in group to wine descriptions. Someone drinks if you mention some fruits, another for veggies, another for spices, candy, chocolate, someone from HS – break it into enough descriptive categories so that everyone has good coverage.

  164. July 22, 2008

Question of my day for you is, give me 2 wines. 1 with complete balance and 1 with no balance in the same variety. I’m really trying to taste the differences. Keep dooin your thing man, It Rocks!!!! completely. I’m a huge Chargers fan so bringin the “Thunder” works for me.

I was a little disappointed in all three videos. I guess I’ve been spoiled by some much better work in earlier video submissions. That said, I’ll give my vote to #1, which I thought was the best spoof of WLTV.

  190. July 22, 2008

    Grif

Well you did it again. You did a wine type I never heard of and made me want to run out and get some.

Videos: I like #1 a lot – go Iggles! #2 was good but he played it straight (not enough gags). #3 had the bets material.

Always good when you feature one of the wines we import, and better still when it gets a good review. I can’t work out how the Montirius Gigondas is only twenty dollars for you… but I’ll ask the people who make it, when I send them the link to the episode. Come to Ireland, would you?

  201. July 22, 2008

    Mark

Never had a Gigondas….but now I will. They sound really interesting.

But on to the Thunder…..in Oklahoma City there was a lot of debate on the new team name. There was a surge of people wanting it to be Thunderbirds because of our ties to the Air Force team and we have used that name in the past for semi-pro football. I think the owners wanted to compromise to something in the middle…….so there came the Thunder.

And who knows….maybe the owners are closet vayniacs!! I’m just sayin’

    Definitely #2.

Drinking game… take a sip if: Gary rates a wine 85 and the camera zooms to the jersey on the wall, somebody walks down the hall and Gary says hi to them or gives them a wink, and if Gary rates a wine as less than 80 points everyone has to chug a full glass of Boone’s.

QotD: WLTV Drinking Game (tentative rules)

    1. Every time Gary “makes friends with his palate” by pinching the tip of his tongue and shaking it, have an extra sip.

    2. If the Oak Monster makes a special appearance, empty the glass you’re currently drinking and start a new glass of wine.

    3. If Gary pauses while giving a wine a whirl to glare knowingly at the camera, drink the whole glass while he raves about the wine.

    4. If Gary’s guest declines the spit bucket, have a drink.

    5. If Sacha Vaynerchuk makes a guest appearance, decant a bottle overnight.

    6. Whenever Gary passes a glass of wine for Mott to sniffy-sniff, have a drink.

    7. If Gary has Mott drink the wine he’s sampling, have three drinks.

    8. If Gary mentions “DNA,” have a drink.

    9. Whenever Gary utters the word “riDONKulous,” pour a drink for your friend.

QOTD: The Most Passionate Wine Drinking Game

    Rules:

    1-sip
    - Gary asks Mott to “Link it up”
    - Gary attempts to hit the camera with a cork using a field goal finger kick. Extra sip if he makes it. 2 extra sips if he attempts it a second time after missing.
    - Gary references Sour cherries.
    - Gary uses the phrase “vegetal components”
    - Gary mentions the Jets or Football
    - Gary tells you to listen to your own pallette

    2-sips
    - Mott speaks
    - Every time Gary pours out some wine for the Vayniacs that couldn’t make it
    - Gary interrupts a guest
    - A Guest spits
    - The Oak Monster arrives
    - Gary scores more than 90 points (90+ and above)
    - Gary interrupts the guest

    3-sips
    - You can see Gary spit into the bucket
    - Gary uses the phrase “Fruit bomb explosion” or “Skittles”
    - Gary doesn’t spit out the wine
    - The guest interrupts Gary
    - Gary changes his score after tasting the wine another time

    Drain the glass
    - Gary asks you to “Taste the rainbow”
    - Mott drinks the wine and likes it
    - Gary uses his normal “Sniffy Sniff” line for other purposes such as “Rinsey Rinse” or “Drinky Drink”
    - Gary unintentionally spills the glass or breaks something
    - If Gary moves to the part of the table where you can see his desk in the background

  221. July 22, 2008

    Brad

I vote for video #1. Great idea getting away from wine for the spoof!

Drinking game: “Sipped” (It’s wine and drinking games are mostly a college thing. Therefore, sips instead of drinks – the juice is expensive. Besides, “sipped” might become the new smashed, hammered, sloshed, plowed…you know, drunk.)

    1. Sip one if Gary throws, flicks, bounces, etc. a cork at the camera and it misses. Sip three (field goal) if it hits.
    2. Sip one every time Gary tells Mott to “Link it up.”
    3. Sip four if Gary does not spit a wine out.
    4. Social (everyone sips one) if Gary mentions enjoying wine with family/friends.
    5. When Gary scores a wine higher than a person or publication he mentions, sip the difference. For example: If Parker scores 90 and Gary scores 92 – sip two. A “-plus” counts as one.
    6. Sip one every time Gary says, “Thunder.”
    7. If Mott sips, you sip.
    8. Sip one every time Gary touches the guest.
    9. Sip three every time Gary cusses.
    10. Sip three when the Oak Monster rears his ugly head.
    11. If Gary does the fruit bomb hand signal, finish your glass.
Multiplier: If Gary’s using the big-ass glass, multiply all sips by 2.

I think this is a good start. I’ll keep revising.

WOOT WOOT! Anna & Derek!!! Congratu-friggin-lations! I hope you guys had a wonderful day…I was enthralled when pics were over! Hottest friggin day ever! And the night…was quite memorable!!!

Gary, Anna made Derek promise not to bring you into her day…because it was her day (being the comprimising new hubby…he complied)….however, she forgot about the VaynerCHICK in her wedding party..that’s right…me! Who was under no promisory obligations what-so-ever! Yessa! So the Champagne (Sparkling wine, rather) bottle on the table of honor was rocking the WLTV wristband throughout the reception!

Cool show. I’m thinking you do a shot of B-12 or some other substance before taping….LOL I wish I had as much energy as you do.

I think You Made A Wrong Choice In your Narrowing Down Gary. While all of these 3 efforts you chose were great…The Best Spoof that had me rolling on the floor was from the episode where you linked up some examples of Videos you were getting. The Dentist doing a Comparison Tasting of Listerine Products was well written, well executed and a Genius of a Concept. However since that is not a Choice…and numbers 2 and 3 just did an impersonation of Wine Library….not a Parody or Spoof

The Winner is Hands Down #1 POPS LINK IT UP!!!

Thanks for the information about Gigondas. I appreciate the work you do for all of us who are trying to learn a little about wine. It’s great to find out about the grapes, where they are from, the good years (and bad) and the people that produce the wine. As far as “drinking” game goes I thought we were doing something different here. This is not something I find interesting. At all.

    D-Cos And It Don't Stop

I vote for Video Spoof #2, being a Giants fan there is NO WAY I can vote for a Eagles fan or someone using a Pats spit bucket, spoof or no spoof.

Some rules for a WineLib Drinking Game:
    1 Sip
    – Anytime you hear “Mott link it up!”
    – Anytime you hear the phrase “Fruit Bomb”
    – Anytime GV tells you the Jets player who wears the number of the wine rating
    2 Sips
    – Throws/Flicks cork at the camera
    – GV rates a wine 95 pts. or higher
    – GV rates a wine below 80 pts.
    – Any appearance of the Oak Monster
    – Anytime GV makes a reference to a razor blade cutting your tongue
    – Anytime GV tells you not to believe his opinions
    3 Sips
    – Everytime GV makes shameless book plug
    – Whenever a guest makes a shameless plug
    – Anytime GV makes a wrestling reference
    – Anytime you hear the words “Big Ass Glass!”
    Chug the Glass
    – GV rates a wine undrinkable, between 50 – 60 pts.
    – Anytime GV makes a delusional prediction about the Jets future success (i.e. The Jets going .500 this season, or the Jets winning a Superbowl in his lifetime)
    – Anytime you hear a reference to manure or sheep butt

  298. July 22, 2008

OK – here are my wine game rule.
    1. To initiate things, everyone takes a chug of wine.
    2. They all then start looking for the game because nobody remembers where they put it after playing it last.
    3. Everytime you look somewhere, and don’t find it, you take another chug. 4. Once found, those that didn’t find it take a chug.
    5. Whoever found it takes two chugs – they are abviously far too cognisant. 6. You then roll a die to see who has to clean the sick off it from the last time it was played.
    7. Everyone else takes a chug.
    8. Get out the game pieces, and make sure all pieces are there. For each piece missing, all players take a chug.

    10. Where did we put that game again? – take a chug

QOTD Wine Game This is serious question!!!! I have always put extra
spin on games my whole life e.g. Double board monopoly, The “boob” (tag
with a big wiffle ball bat and penny card fort (this is the most elaborate
take two old suitcases sit across with each other and shoot pennies from
the spring handle at playing card forts between you)

Gary’s wine game would be an educational game. You would have three piles
of card each with a wine from WLTV. The player would get pre-determined points based on what Gary scored the wines appelation, what grape is in the
wine extra if you get the right blend. Play would move around a board start
to finish and If you land on Mott you go back to the beginning.

    I wanna yellow wristband!!!

#3 is definitely the winner great job!

    #1 pimps it to perfection!

If we’re talking play along with the show….

1 shot of Vodka every time Sasha is mentioned.
Hug everyone when you hear “family & friends”.
Give the spouse a kiss when Liz is mentioned.
Do the “chicken dance” when any wine goes “all barnyard”
Donate $10 to a favorite charity EVERY time a glass breaks (at home)
$100 if Gary breaks one on the show…

    Thanks-keep it up!

    Gary, Question(s) of the day!
I have watched lotta episodes and now you have done more than 500 of them, I am wondering how much cost do u incur opening some of these good wines everyday? And more importantly what do you do with the bottle of wine after u have tasted on the show, I am sure more than half the bottle of wine is still remaining, do you folks just party up and drink it?

    Drink when Gary:
    Makes a wrestling reference

Pours wine out for the “homies who can’t be with us”
    Picks up an action figure

I love Gigondas, was there only a few months ago, great great little town with fantastic wine.

    QOTD: great idea!

    Name: Slurry Thunder

1-as many damn people as you can fit around the computer screen

Rules: 1) All players must be of legal age (those under legal age must play with Sparkling Grape Juice or “Kids Wine” as it was known when I grew up)

    2) After playing all contestants must leave a comment on their experience – ie lurkers are instantly disqualified and must take a lap around a city block, or a cow pasture if you’re out in the boonies

    3) Any signs of Wine Douchbaggery cause instant disqualification (to be voted on by the rest of the group) If you’re alone; we work on the honor system.

    4) There are no losers, only winners…possibly drunk drunk winners.

Instructions: Full blown instructions are followed up with easy to remember names.

    1) Everytime a ‘horn’ sounds during the intro, take a drink; this is known as “getting the party started”

    2) Any time the Jets are mentioned take a drink: “The pity parade”

    3) If gary uses a word you don’t know take a drink: “Ignorance provides bliss”

    4) If the oak monster comes out…Scream at your computer: “I ain’t afraid of no Oak”

    5) Anytime Mott has to work take two drinks: “One for me, one for my worker bee”

More rules to follow…I have taken this WAY too seriously!

Too late but, all good, really! #3 gets my nod due to his yapping ability. #2 was scary good with the mannerisms, #1 was great with the spoof on the outside wine tasting. Gary watch out.

  362. July 23, 2008

    Joe Kromer

    Gary,

After lurking for about 100+ episodes, I’m finally commenting… I have been in search of a good wine store that carries some of the wines you review, but unfortunately most of Pittsburgh’s wine stores are not up to par. Finally I have found a good one, where I purchased the 2004 Montirius Gigondas ($24.99). I have yet to try it, but can’t wait for when I do. I’ll re-post my thoughts on the wine. I also picked up 2 bottles of the 2005 Two Brothers Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve.

    Cheers,
    Joe

  363. July 23, 2008

    Chris Hansen

    Gary,

I’m a neophyte, a noob, and I lurk no longer.

This is the story of a man who has taken to the Thunder show to such a degree that:
1.) my wife is irritated with my near constant watching of episodes, but more by my near constant impressions of Gary.
2.) I spent more than I should at the local wine purveyor. Thusly, irritating my wife more. (Side note: Only narrowly avoided trying to impress the purveyor with my new knowledge).
3.) I have sent links, entire episodes, and even the spoofs to friends, colleagues, and near strangers to expand “the nation”
4..) I have changed plans on an upcoming guys only weekend to include a wine festival instead of seeing a second Brewers game.
5.) I contacted Wisconsin legislators about reciprocity with new Jersey in wine sales.
6.) I’ve checked my calendar for the reminder of the third Thursdays in 2008.
7.) Gave 100 bones to a friend traveling to France next week in the hopes he won’t completely screw that up (written instructions provided).
8.) and lastly, I’ve considered wearing a wrist band in public.

These are not small things Gary. These things are making others around me worry.

QOTD: I recently learned of the drinking game “Bunnies” Episode #24 on Tiki Bar TV. http://www.tikibartv.com

I think Vayniacs might call our version “Squirrels.” Don’t know why, just seems cosmically proper.

Never tried a Gigondas, I’ll get on that.

  364. July 23, 2008

Too late, yes, but #2 had everything down, down to the wink to the hallway.

  365. July 23, 2008

    YoungDave

    QOTD: GREAT QOTD- Well, maybe:
drink 1 – every time Gary says “wow”
drink 1 – for every single sports reference
drink 1 – with Gary each time he DOESN’T spit
    drink 2 – for a mispronunciation
drink 2 – for a professional wrestling reference
drink 3 – for an oak monster appearance
drink 3 – for a spill (unintentional or intentional)
    drink 4 – for a Sasha appearance

  366. July 23, 2008

    Jayhitek

QOTD: Would the drinking game ASSHOLE be appropriate for a wine program?

  367. July 23, 2008

Definitely #1 – Much more imagination than the other two.

  368. July 23, 2008

Too late to vote! Drinking games aren’t my thing (Hi, Bob).

  369. July 23, 2008

    LudwigVan

    QOTD:
    very simple:
you would need up to 4 people to get the fun. You pick a wine for prize, you need at least 4 wines in addition (this should be ok, every one takes a bottle). It works like a book reading contest:
you taste the wine you brought in the group than you describe what you sniffed and tasted and than you score secretly. Write it down. Then you add the score, divide it through the number of people to get the average and the one nearest to the average wins. The one who won most rounds gets the precious bottle. Much fun, lots to discuss, lots to learn. If you’re not satisfied: next game, if you can handle it.

    Ludwig.

Also- Once again, you’ve inspired me to expand my horizons:Gigondas? Never heard of it till today. Look forward to giving it a whirl!

  374. July 24, 2008

    Carlitos

Joey B, I hate to correct you but Gary’s got it right. The S in Gigondas (or Vacqueyras) is NOT silent. I also thought it was, but I was just there 3 monts ago and I stad corrected. One of my favourite parts of the world!

QOTD. The drinking game days are over. People don’t need any motivation to drink the good vino. I’ll do it at my own pace, thank you!

QOTD- The only I can think up is that when you say “Mott, link that up!” everyone should take a drink.

  377. July 24, 2008

    Colin Komar

    QOTD:
My goal here is to list rules not only for us to abide by, but a fun game that Gary can play with us.

    1) I just saw episode 497 and you mentioned that you wanted to have lighting that flashes during Sniffy Sniff. Instead of having the lights go off every time a Sniffy Sniff happens, you could have like a “Thunder

    2) Round” where everyone has to chug their glasses.

    3) Anytime Mott links something up.

    4) I think anytime you look away from the camera to head nod at someone or any distraction like that you should take a drink.

    5) Since you are uStreaming it up now we could have more interactive drinking, like 300+ we all drink.

    6) Anytime you let “Pour some out for the Vayniacs”, we take a drink.

    7) Anytime you pass the glass to Mott, we drink.

    8) Anytime you nearly drop the glass or break one, you get one for a “party foul.”

    9) Any time you brown bag it, we take a swig from the bottle.

    10) Anytime a wine “Brings the Thunder” we all drink.

    11) Anytime the Oak Monster Shows up we take a drink.

    12) We raise our glasses in tribute for the shout-outs and afterwards all drink.

That’s most of all that I can think of. I know it is too late now, but I thought that #1 (DaKoolaidShow) the best.

  378. July 24, 2008

    ScottG

Finally catching up. Nice show. I actually stumbled across the live feed and though it was a “backstage” look at the taping of the show. You should add a “Mott Cam” so we can see all of Mott’s facial expressions!!

Can’t help with the QOTD. I’m all about responsible drinking. Like drinking when I’m lonely, drinking when I’m depressed, drinking when I’m bored, etc. I would never, EVER, turn it into a game. :-)

    Contest: Gotta go with #3

  381. July 25, 2008

    Jim in Atlanta

I really enjoy Gigondas wines. I spent a few days there in 2006 and got a great appreciation for the wines. It is also a nice place to visit. Lots of good tasting opportunities.

QOTD – I like anything that teaches me about wines, whether it is questions about wines, regions, wineries, or if it relates to trying to describe wines (grape, region, vintage, etc.). Anything would be fun.

  382. July 25, 2008

    KVolk

QOTD: This is so easy to do…anytime you say Jets you drink….when you mention Kellen Clemmens you drink what’s left in your glass…..when you say anything to do with the playoffs or super bowl…finish the bottle…..

  383. July 26, 2008

    Dan-o

Good episode, although the server was not too kind to me.
I was introduced to Gigondas in 1997 by a French colleague.
I have been a fan since!

QOTD – not big on drinking games, it takes the pleasure out of drinking for quality.

  384. July 27, 2008

    Sassodoro

QOTD. Has anybody suggested blind tasting and trying to identify the wine? Isn’t that the grandaddy of drinking games? How about tasting a wine and trying to describe it and score it as Gary would. For example, would Gary describe the nose as oregano or celery stick, twizzler or cool aid, etc.? (Has anybody compiled a list of Gary’s unusual descriptors?)

  385. July 28, 2008

    JayZee

Nice show on the big “G”. I’ve always enjoyed Gigondas as a less expensive alternative to CDP (although, as you say, not so much any more).

QOTD: I’m told old for drinking games. ;-)

I’m having my first gigondas as I rewatch this show. It’s a 2005 Domain De Carobello Gigondas. I can’t identify flavors as well as you. I’m not real high on it. Although I love the raw veggies at the salad bar I think I may not be the biggest fan of the veggie wines. But I think I’m liking it more than past wines that had similar flavors so my palate may be evolving. I’ll see what overnight breathing does for the gigondas.

Gigondas always rocks my face. I’ve been a fan for years. Glad to see you dig the profile of these highly individual wines. You rock, Mr. Vaynerchuk!!!

Good stuff. Thanks for bringing another wine to my attention. Def. have to check something out in the future. QOTD: Everytime you give a wine a pass ( or pazzzzzzz), one person has to roll two dice. Whatever number it lands on, thats the number of drinks everyone has to take ( could mean multiple glasses. heck, if you go 0-4 that could mean multiple bottles of wine!).

everytime you stutter, mumble, or fumble your words is a drink, every time you swallow, its two, and when you mention mott, 3

My drinking game is very straightforward and easy to understand: Put a bottle of Irish wishky in the middle of a table. Someone starts to drink 1/10 of it and passes the bottle on clockwise or counterclockwise. The first person who is laying under the table because of the lack of some coordination disabilities of her/his brain/nerve/muscle complex is to buy the next round.

“East coast obnoxious”, love it! Hey Gary, you’re E.C.O. friendly!

QOTD: I’m still playing catch up with these episodes, so i’ll have to wait and see what mannerisms and show format you’re rocking in 2010 before I can make a game! Oh yeah, and i’ll need to get some friends into WLTV cos drinking by yourself is one thing, but solo drinking games? Slippery!
