I have secretly been waiting for an episode like this, i wanted to see how much change a wine undergoes from the perspective of a trained palate. Not that i want to generalize what all wines will do, but just an example that a wine can change smell drastically and flavour minimally. interesting to know.

QOTD: I’ve only recently started airing out wines, but i have to say what i have noticed is that the cheap wines really open up a lot. much more so that i would have expected. it is definitely a good way to make a cheap (and otherwise less desireable) wine servable.

the show today was awsome loved it. As far as QOTD: i cant say ive had a wine 24hrs later. The second QOTD: I have a skunkor he-man but its all beat up and missing his outfit.
    PS
you said in the show and i hope your joking about dumping your intro and getting anew one. If you did that id smack you. That opening makes my night this show that you do makes my day it give me a litle something to look forward to so please dont change your opening.

qotd: i would say this one shiraz i had that benefited a whole lot from aging a day, but i don’t remember the name of it because it was one of the first wines i had as far tasting purpose go. its been almost a year now, but i remember a lot of my first wines being a bit to hot just because of my inexperience in picking out wines.

The 06 Pinots from Oregon have, as a whole, made the most dramatic changes over night that I have ever experienced in a wine. This is on the possitive side. I have had plenty of wines that were good on night one, turn into strait crap the following day.

    Great Show!!!

QOTD: Probably the 2003 Montus Madiran. Opened up very nicely the next day, although drank quite well the first day surprisingly.

We had a jardin cabernet from SA straight from the bottle then had it again from the bottle 24 hours later. We loved the smoky wood flavor which disappeared the next day.

QOTD: I’ll limit my answer to wines in recent memory because I’m too tired to bring up my older tasting notes and dig back. The 2004 Sella Coste della Sesia Orbello, which is 50% Barbera, 25% Nebbiolo, 20% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Vespolina. Very interesting on both days, but also completely different. On opening the bottle, I immediately poured half the bottle into a 375 ml bottle, stuck a cork in it, and put it in my wine fridge and saved it for day 2.

QOTD: Some big zins like Chiarello Zin—tasted as fresh the 2nd day, but didn’t notice any other complexities. Many reds have evolved with a 2nd layer of flavors I wasn’t able to pick up on the first day.

Too lazy to go to the archives to look up AJ’s 21st birthday show, but he was cute and said the word cassis a lot.

By the way it’s maraschino cherries–hopefully without red dye #9.

    Hi Gary,

super interesting concept, the 24 hour deal. I honestly thought you would like the Penfolds a lot better… Hey by the way, I’ve never seen a picture of Skunkor, don’t know what he looks like.

QOTD: Carmin de Peumo, Concha y Toro’s top wine, 2004, forgot there was some left in the bottle and was absolutely mind blowing the day after (and wonderful the first day)
ONE MORE THING: If you change the intro to the show, I am never watching again. Your intro Gary, and please, do give this specific comment a shout-out, is like the Tonight Show’s music just before Johnny Carson came out… no one will ever forget it and it is like your intro, I get chills. Really.

QOTD: 2001 Andrew Will Ciel de Chuval, it was awesome!

With regards to an older QOTD and drinking games… Anytime you mention a superhero or any other cartoon character, you must take a big ass swig of the least desirable wine you’ve tasted on that particular show.

I live in Canada and Hulu cannot stream in my area. Maybe have another contest for us Canadians Eh!

QOTD: Just recently had a Cotes du Rhone Villages that was pretty good the first day and by the second was thin and quite disappointing.

QOTD: ‘04 Amon Ra. It went from great to sublime in a days time. Actually, it peaked, ’cause at day 3, it was quite sour.

Nice concept of the 2nd day wines. Tons of your viewers do the two day experience. Hecl, you can even re-cork some and see how they stand in a week, ie: the Sassicaia.

QOTD: I had a 2006 Razors Edge Syrah-Grenache blend. Upon opening it, it was ok. A bit typical, a bit fake, etc. Not terribly harsh alcohol, but – meh.

Three days later after sitting in the bottle it was much more pleasant. Still not the best, but not bad at all.

Please don’t change the beginning. You’re “Hello Everybody” makes me smile everytime.

QOTD: I remember AJ from your January episode! His birthday is January 28, 1987, and it was on a Wednesday.

Another great show Gary!!! Awesome to see the difference between 24hrs of decanting.

I would love to know how in the hell you remember all that stuff from your early childhood years! I am the same age as you, and never could imagine recalling this stuff. Kids suck your brain cells….

QOTD: Every red tastes better the next day!

Who is AJ? Oh, guess I won’t win.

    GOOD SHOW!

DO NOT STOP THE “HELLO EVERYBODY” – it is your trademark. If you lose it, you are lost. Please. Repetition is very important for branding! Take a marketing class!

I love the Goonies – Watched it 40 times at least. 23 years ago! Hey, you guys! Can Mott do the chunk dance? oh, sorry. http://www.movieweb.com/movies/film/80/480/summary.php Goonies 2 in 2009!!! Need a wine to watch it with…

Good show. Nice to see a day older taste. I have wine all the time days later. and really taste and smell a difference. Mostly with reds – better!

Good point about each day – YOU are different (and me) so tasting the wines can be received differently. Very good, Gary! loved that learned lesson.

The best “day later” wine: Walnut Crest Cab Sauv. South America. Amazing how much it changed and tasted better – in a decanter! try it. 48 hours later, it is real differnt.

I know just what you mean with the Skunkor. Even if the internet does say “Stinkor” I distinctly remember the character as Skunkor.

You really don’t need a figure that is new in the box, since mine has been open for over 20 years and still stinks.

Me giving Skunkor/Stinkor a “Sniffy Sniff”

Not sure what is going on with Hulu. It tried to take over my hard drive and shut down my computer. I could not enter the contest. :(
I had such greatness to say.
Until next time, then I will no longer be a lurker…
    Great show, GV

    It’s a maraschino cherry GV.
