    Now we’re talking !!!!
Dalwhinnie is my favourite. Once my new girlfriend asked if she could mix some with diet coke once, beacuse dhe was nervous about meeting my family !!! I couldn’t believe it. Of course, after such an insult, we all know what I had to do about that relationship – 14 years later, she’s my wife.

In fact, I’ve just poured myself a Glenmorangie – Madeira wood finish (the oak monster of the malt world :) ) especially to sip while I watch this episode.

Nice episode I’m very pro-scotch, still waiting for another beer episode too. I’ll definitely have to look for talisker 175 now.

QOTD: I actually think apple will survive his retirment well, the stock will probably drop a few points initially but would recover quickly. I always figured that he would announce his retirement at launch of some new tech piece anyway.

    QOTD: Probably not.

Love the Scotch, so this was great fun. Thank you.

Holy crap! My girlfriend just purchased me that very same Talisker and a 12 year Double Wood Balvenie for my upcoming birthday on August 6th. Who would have thunk that Gary Vee and Mr. Mott-ster would deliver such a show.

    Happy Birthday to me!

QOTD : As they say – what doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger. If apple has managed to survive despite Steve Jobs, it should thrive without him. Hopefully they can start making software a little less viral also :)

    Peter Wood

If you are ever in Scotland Gary, get in contact! Aside from having a look in my store (800 single malts and 2500 wines) I’ll happily guide you round some distilleries!

    Michael Mohammadi

I have the Tallisker and Laphroaig sitting at home! I probably average one glass per week, usually a weeknight after a long day at work.

QOTD: Apple will be fine without Steve Jobs. He’s put a great infrastructure in place and if he were to leave, step down, pass, whatever, someone would step up and carry the torch.

  21. July 25, 2008

    Dale Cruse

QOTD: Yes. Every company eventually outlives its founder. Believe it or not, one day Wine Library will outlive GV!

    Great episode!

What’s with putting water in the booze? Johnny Black for me you single malt jerk offs.

QOTD: Apple survived without him once before. Granted it was going nowhere until he came back. He should get some good people around him right now (like Bill Gates did) and then stay on the board for goodwill.

  23. July 25, 2008

    KyBoy

Since I’m from Bourbon Country I don’t drink much scotch, however, really enjoyed this episode. I’m just happy that one of Gary’s guests finally brought up how well a fine cigar would pair w/ their drink…whether it be scotch, bourbon or wine, the combo is off the heeezz!

Scotch! And the Talisker, Laphroaig double punch thunder to boot. Laphroaig is my desert island scotch but Talisker- even though it’s not from Islay- was my bridge to peat and to Islay whiskies such as Caol Ila, Lagavulin, and of course Laphroaig. And Matt brought the laid back lightning.

QOTD: Apple is such a brand/identity/lifestyle wrapped in one company that it’ll be hard to have the current character of the company survive Steve Jobs but if they stay tight on their business philosophy they should survive (and maybe thrive). But it’ll never be the same without SPJ.

  30. July 25, 2008

    Mark E.

OK, I’ve got a lot to say on the matter of Steve Jobs and Apple. I believe there are enough smart, passionate, hard-working, and innovative people to last the company through another few decades, at least. Steve Jobs is seen as so important because he has worked to put himself in that position. For the last decade he has dominated each and every public Apple keynote address. He is the top marketer and the top businessman, and the top aestheticist (master of aesthetics) at the company. He’s been great because he isn’t a CEO who is just concerned about the bottom line. He puts his passion and a boatload of hard work in everything he does. But, you will notice that in the last year, he has had more and more subordinates handle more and more of the keynotes. He knows he is not immortal, and he might be looking forward to a relaxed retirement.
The truth is, Apple will do great without Steve Jobs. There’s just too many great people working there, at all levels of the company, who share his passion and have their own enthusiasm and talent and hard working attitude for it to Fail. … Now, the shareholders may think different, but thats because too many shareholders are a bunch of windy Farts who make decisions based on emotions and incorrect assumptions/perceptions and not the facts that Apple is a rocking company with extremely solid foundations like the Talent, passion and other things I mentioned above.

QOTD: Apple will survive if for no other reason than people want a choice.

I have been unable to find a scotch I can enjoy.

    WineWoman

QOTD: I say yes. He’ll stay into retirement.

Loved the Scotch and watching you really enjoy that 175th anniversary brand. Got a buzz by just watching…..

  33. July 25, 2008

    Lord Nouda

Excellent episode. Though, this was the first episode I actually sat down to watch with a glass of wine myself. Anyway, I wasn’t going to be dragged down by a different beverage. And since I’m very much into scotch (and irish whiskey at that) I loved the episode. When are you getting yourself into coffee?

QOTD: Steve leaving may actually give someone else the chance to be ingenious and broaden the perception of technology in our lives. Well, at least as long as they don’t pick a manager to be head of the corporation. It cannot be about the money. Matt knows this well and Apple has some history on that topic.

  34. July 25, 2008

    Alastair

I really enjoyed this episode, so thanks for doing it. To my palate, the intense peat flavour of Laphroaig, even the TCP chemical element, is highly seductive and I agree with the insights from the show, the finish on Laphroaig is very, very long. I would love to see Gary do an episode over here in Scotland some time. I’ve not seen the 175th anniversary Talisker before, but will seek it out now – it must be available somewhere here in Edinburgh.

  35. July 25, 2008

    Jack

QOTD: Apple will survive Steve Jobs because of the incredible power of brand, especially with Apple’s popularity. With that said, the day Jobs leaves Apple will be a very sad day and Apple will not ever be the same.

  36. July 25, 2008

    Orion S.

QotD: I certainly hope so. They didn’t seem to do too well without him before, but Apple has a new direction and a new size now that might soon become unstoppable in the way that Microsoft has. Which brings another question…will Microsoft survive Steve Ballmer? That’s yet tbd.

  37. July 25, 2008

    Kevin K

QOTD: No. Apple is already heading down a slippery slope.

  38. July 25, 2008

    JSun

Scotch, nice twist for a Friday. Never been much of a fan myself but who knows what the quality of the scotch was. Maybe I will give it another shot in the future.

QOTD: I think Apple is on the right path now and it would be hard for them to screw it up w/o Joby-Jobs. The Apple fanatics will keep it going for several years at the least. Microsoft definitely has not been getting the love lately and who knows if/when that will turn around. Finally, I agree with hasbeen, people want a choice, that is one reason there are tons of Linux distros.

    Keep it up

You guys are DRUNK! GV, where’s my B-day shout out, it was on the 22nd, what gives?:) Good show, lots of fun!
QOTD: Yes. He’s done such a good job at branding it will run it’s self.

  40. July 25, 2008

Wow, a birthday present for me from Gary V. Today is my birthday and I get the show that I’ve been waiting for for a while, and one I’ve suggested to Gary at least once. I’m a big scotch fan so this was awesome, thanks Gary, more beer and spirits eps please, thanks.

  41. July 25, 2008

    Robin C

I never knew there was so much to say about scotch. All I know about it is that my father drank Chivas Regal – 80 proof. It tasted like gasoline to me.
QOTD: If Windows survived Bill Gates’ retirement I guess Apple can survive Steve Jobs’.

  42. July 25, 2008

    Scott from Salt Lake

QOTD: Another Tech Pioneer will come along and make us all forget about Mr Jobs and his Legacy.

Nice show, way to change it up GV

Good show, as a diversion, don’t go nuts on me and talk about doing scotch once a week. As another occasional diversion you should do an armagnac/cognac show. Nothing has aromatics like armagnac/cognac. The sniffy-sniff of wine and whisky can be nice. The sniffy-sniff of armagnac or cognac can on occasion be transcendental. I’m not exaggerating. It’s only happened to me a couple of times, but the sniffy-sniff on those rare occasion has caused me to forget where I was and who I was with. A lot of time can pass before it occurs to me that I’m supposed to put some in my mouth as well. I bought a lot decades ago and don’t drink that often so I haven’t shopped in a long, long time. I don’t know if my favorites still exist. Larressingle XO Armagnac is my favorite. The VSOP isn’t in the same league. Remy Martin is my favorite cognac. I’ve had the XO but to me it seems as good as the VSOP so I stick with the VSOP.

  44. July 25, 2008

    Chris

Scotch! So cool that you did this show, going to have to have some scotch tonight. Please do more of these.

QOTD: Not unless they can find someone with his charisma and showmanship. They nearly died without him once, granted they still were doing some cool things, but he knows how to sell a product.

  45. July 25, 2008

    Mike S

Great change of pace guys! Love single malts of all kinds Islay, Speyside, Highland, depending on the mood – er, just like wine. Would love to see a “Scotch Expert” as a guest who could give us a little history and background of the distillers as GV does with the wines. Wouldn’t mind seeing a small-batch Bourbon show too. Not having a spit bucket definitely brought the BUZZ – your faces definitely had a redder tint than usual and I don’t think it’s sunburn ;-)

QoTD – Apple lost it’s focus when Jobs left the first time. I think they learned their lesson. Apple is not just the niche company they were before. The iPod and the iPhone attracted a bunch of Windoze folks to the Mac. Once you get your hands on an Apple product, it’s hard to go back.

  46. July 25, 2008

    Genghis Philip

Great show! I love to see Gary tackle other alcohols.

QOTD: Oh f’sho, Apple’s base and branding are too strong.

  47. July 25, 2008

    DannInNH

Another super show and the guest with his comments was a good match for you. More shows like this, not just wine, are needed to bring awareness to us about other beverages.
Apple “the company” will survive without Steve Jobs, but the stock won’t. The other day when there was a cautious rumor about his health knocked the stock down. When he leaves, in whatever manner, the stock will tumble.

I watched the wrestling videos. Hugely entertaining. I used to watch wrestling – I even had a little crush on one of the wrestlers. I think he wore a mask or a hood or something. Then the wrestling started getting very fakey and I stopped watching.

    Rani Haykal

    Great Show!!!

You need to bring back Sir Gary for Scotch Library TV

QOTD: It really all depends on who steps up to take his place.

    aznativekurt

I never was a wrestling fan. Watch the links and I am still not. Guess I never found the entertainment in it.

Scotch show was great, change up was fun.

QOTD: I know I will offend all the apple fanboys out there but sorry, apple is like the fisher price computer. The more people learn about computer and as the next generation of computer kids grow up the more people will out grow the limitations that apple offers. I think when Jobs goes apple will die out.

  52. July 25, 2008

    SteveW

Great show, now you need to do an episode on Vodka’s and Gin’s.
QOTD: I don’t know, he saved Apple by coming back after he left.

  53. July 25, 2008

    jimkay

Great show – how about a gin taste-off, Old Raj, Bluecoat, Hedricks, Boodles.
    I’ll bring the glasses.

  56. July 25, 2008

    HuskerJamie

Great show guys. I love it when you mix in some beer library, vodka library and scotch library with all the great wine libraries.

QOTD: The stock will definitely take a hit and the first Apple convention after he leaves will be really important. I’m going to say yes because their branding is so strong now.

  57. July 25, 2008

    Mike1115

Ricky Steamboat vs Randy Savage is not only one of the greatest matches of all time, but that was one of the greatest story lines in wrestling history. Everything was perfect. The throat injury, Bobby Henan’s comments (”You know what Steamboat is saying about it? Nothing.”) and the Wrestlemania match.

  58. July 25, 2008

    Pat Sissons

killer episode! i have been dying to see a scotch episode (i was almost ready to do one myself, haha). I’m really glad you guys tried laphroaig, it is one of my favorite scothes. I haven’t tried the talisker before, but i may go out and snag it tonight.

*IMPORTANT* if you did enjoy the laphroaig (this goes for anyone reading this, and hopefully gary as well) you *MUST* go out and buy the lagavulin 16 year. To my palate, this scotch is absolute perfection. you must be warned that it is very peaty and a little hot, but the flavor profile and the complexities of the taste are second to none.

QOTD: of course apple will survive jobs, there is no doubt in my mind. Now that may sound like an apple fanboy answer, but as it happens i am as far from an apple fan as can be. I do own an ipod touch, but only because there is no other device with its feature set on the market. I absolutely despise apple and their business ethics. I find apple to be even more unbearable than microsoft. That said, i still believe that apple holds a key market share that is nearly impenetrable and I see them doing business for many years to come. However, i do not seem them becoming a majority market share holder in the technology sector (to be truthful, there are just too many apple haters like myself out there).

  59. July 25, 2008

    Dominus

Being a geek and sports fan from CA you’d think he’d know the name of Oakland As ballpark: McAfee Stadium

That being said, not a fan of alcohol-driven so this episode had no relevance to me whatsoever. Actually, I hate any alcoholic beverages other than beer and wine. Why not a beer show since it supposedly pairs better with food than wine.

QOTD: Didn’t Jobs leave before and Apple survived? In this stage of the game, no one person has a major effect on as big a corp as Apple. See Bill Gates.

  60. July 25, 2008

    Alex Chalupka

QODT: I don’t think Apple can survive without Jobs. He is so overpowering and has the final say on everything to the point where no one else there is capable of following in his footsteps. If he cares about the success of the company following his time there, he needs to slowly step back and let someone else have a say in something, much like Bill Gates has done.

  61. July 25, 2008

    Smorgy

great show i really enjoyed it and you should definitely do it more often.

qotd: yes i think new blood in apple will be a welcome change for the better, not that steve jobs isnt doing his job really well. but there are alot of things about the apple brand that will change with new blood and i think itll make apple an even better brand.

  62. July 25, 2008

    keir

This show has inspired me to give Scotch another go, in the past I’ve been immediately overpowered and put off but maybe with a bit more consideration and a slower pace I can find something I like.

QOTD: A company like apple can not be a one man show, I’m sure Jobs has a crack team alongside him to whom he is passing on his vision.

  63. July 25, 2008

    Slushpuppy

Excellent show; and yes as previously suggested, do the vodka, gin, bourbon, and rum tastings; especially do Tequila. I hope you didn’t pollute that nice scotch with New Jersy tap water!

  65. July 25, 2008

Really, really cool show.. enjoyed that a lot.. Matt was a great guest..

QOTD: ultimately yes, will it be a different company after he leaves? absolutely..

  66. July 25, 2008

    JudeMurphy

QOTD- Don’t know who that is, don’t really care to be honest.
As much as I like my Apple products!
    Sorry.

Never had scotch. Must try it once.

I’m drinking an awful 05 bordeaux right now, but somehow I’m still really enjoying it.
So here goes my theory on why it was such a crazy amazing vintage:
They’ve put dope in the damn things!
    ; )

    Jim Miranda

I wish I could know in advance what was going to be tasted so I could run out to my local store, get some and taste along with you.
Great show, although I’m into the wine scene, I’d like to see additional shows on different spirits because you have such an excellent take on smelling and tasting.

  68. July 25, 2008

    FolsomMike

Fun show but I have to say you guys made me shake my head a few times. First, you put way too much water in the scotch. You really only need to put a few drops in otherwise you totally delute the flavor of the scotch. Maybe a small ice cube at most. 2nd, you can’t really compare a 10 year old Laphroaig with the 175th anniversary Talisker. It’s like comparing a 2006 Cab to a 10 year old Bardoux. The 15 year old Laphroaig would give the Talisker a run for it’s money. Lastly, you have to mention where the Scotches are made. Talisker and Laphroaig are island scotches and Balvenie is a Spayside. Island scotches are peatier and spaysides have a hint of fruit in the taste. The region impacts the taste big time. Thanks for the show gentlemen. I’m going to open a bottle of Lagavulin in honor of the two of you.

As for the question of the day, Apple will survive without Jobes. He’s done so good of a job setting their strategy and direction that it can flourish without him.

Hey Gary! Nice curveball with the show on Scotch! I am not very familiar with Scotch at all (other than it being really harsh to the taste).

I always love the everpresent respect and attention given to sports entertainment (WWE)! It fits so well with this show!

Answer to the Question of the Day: Apple will handle a changing of the guard if and when the need arises. Mr. Jobs has been an effective leader of the company, but everyone, over time, can be replaced.

Follow up to my earlier comment:
I’ve gotten myself all worked up over armagnac (or cognac). When one does finally introduce some of the liquid to the mouth, one shouldn’t do all of that swishy-swish. You don’t take in too much; tilt your head back; hold it in the back of your mouth; turn off your mind relax and float down stream. If you’re thinking “when should I swallow” you’re not doing it right. You neglected to turn off your mind. The future will come. There will be a point in the future when you don’t have this wonderful stuff in your mouth, and the bottle and glass won’t be there. You don’t need to worry how you’ll get from point A to point B. Just enjoy point A. Maybe you should invite me to the armagnac show. If you want I’ll bring my own.

  73. July 25, 2008

great change of pace loved the show. As far as one of the greatest matches ever you have to give it up to Sabu vs Terry Funk The “born to be wired” match from ECW (before vince bought them out and made it a shell of its self) check that out on youtube
QOTD: Apple is a very niech company and has changed the game with the Ipod but the company will live on with Steve Jobs by the time he lets go of the company who knows what the new IT thing will be

  74. July 25, 2008

    Yvette W

That was an absolutely fantastic show, and I think Matt totally made the show! I will look into learning more about scotch now too.

QOTD: Apple will survive without Steve only because there are so many talented people working there, and new talent is always cropping up.

  75. July 25, 2008

    Ben Janssen South Australia

    Great show Matt and Gary.

QOTD: Hopefully Apple are searching the globe for another Steve Jobs. Someone with the craziest ideas but ideas which excite people. Maybe time for Gary to step up… or over.

  76. July 25, 2008

    brorjace

Great show, I love Scotch! The Laphroag and Talisker (not the one you guys tried) are 2 of my favorite brands. The Balvenies are just too sherrified for me, as are a lot of the highlands.

QOTD: Yes, apple will survive, unless they mismanage it horribly like they did the last time Steve left.

  77. July 25, 2008

    M

Great show. Perfect flow. Interesting. Although I’m still not ready for Scotch.

QOTD: I’m a big Apple fan but I don’t know. Who knows?!

Great episode, love the change up. Quick question, Isn’t Sherry from Spain?

    Keep up the good work!!

  79. July 25, 2008

    Colin Komar

Great show. I love scotch. So far Chivas Regal is my fave (it’s in my price range!). I will have to try these out now.

QOTD: I should admit first that I am a big Mac Nerd, but honestly I do not know what Apple will do after Jobs. He has certainly been a huge marketing force for the company. We are finally seeing Apple products taking a larger market share away from Microsoft. I have to admit though, that Steve Jobs has been a big force for marketing products that are way ahead of their time to a market that really does not need the product, and people still scoop it up! I think that he has made a good market brand (with superb marketing strategies), but I honestly do not see it being as successful once he leaves.

Interesting show, not really into scotch, but nice to mix things up.

QOTD: Apple will pull through. It might dip at first, but it will be fine.

I’m not a scotch drinker but still…great show! Variety is the key. What about a brandy show? Thst would make me happy.

The Laphroaig is a long-time fave of mine. And if I feel like jumping into a peat bog, there’s one even peatier, Lagavulin.

Judging from friends and critics alike, I might be the only defender of Balvenie on the planet. But it’s the Doublewood I like.

I think Talisker is sold sometimes in a sampler with Oban, Glenkinchie, and some other Scotches. The plain vanilla Talisker didn’t do much for me. Guess I need to find some 175, huh?

Now everyone will be after you to do other hard liquor tastings! I’d like to see you take on some Bourbons and possibly gins, but I’m not sure if I’d be down with frequent tastings of products from the far side of the 40 proof divide.

Will Apple survive Jobs’ eventual departure? If Jobs vision extends far enough past then to see them through, and if Microsoft continues to falter, sure.

  85. July 25, 2008

    John R.

Man great show… this makes me want to go out and taste scotch! (of course i’m still underage so that will have to wait)

QOTD: I feel Apple will survive Steve Jobs, however I feel it will not be near as good. By good I mean maybe as innovative in products or marketing.

  86. July 25, 2008

ok good show. although i’ve *never* heard of adding 2x the amount of water to a single malt, so i’m not sure what that’s about.

one other thing… the comparison of laphroaig to a fruit bomb, and talisker to an old world wine. i’d almost reverse that comparison. talisker delivers those wonderfully smooth flavors, always permutating, always suprising, but it’s so integrated and so well presented it’s almost polished and fresh. laphroaig is more of the old world, take no prisoners, f-u if you don’t like it delivery of it’s array of amazing flavors, everyone be damned attitude.

but vayniacs if you’ve never tried a scotch, and aren’t willing to roll in at some of the higher price points, you can absolutely score with the entry expressions of laphroaig and talisker – the 10 years. both are amazing, amazing malts, and it’d be a great change of pace to go and seek them out.

    qotd: geh. whatever.

  87. July 25, 2008

    Anrew Zander

QOTD: (Great question, btw) Absolutely! Here’s why:

    1. Steve Jobs is no fool. He’s already grooming his replacement(s) (Ive, Oppenheimer, Cook).

    2. He’s put together a phenomenal team (mentioned above) that can work together to produce great products, leaving the company in good hands.

    3. Investors will be scared of the transition and Apple’s stock may drop at first, but it will recover with Apple’s continued success.

    4. Apple will continue to be Apple, just a different guy giving the keynote presentations at Apple Expos and conventions.

its friday! how come you are not sitting on the couch? this seems like the perfect leather couch episode. Otherwise, must say that I loved the ep. Awesome change around here, I’ve always been interested in single malts. Lets see some more of these and other alcoholic beverages every now and then!!!!

I loved the scotch episode! Please keep doing these. You rock.

    I would cerntainly hope so(qotd)
Cool different show,I used to be in scotch but ever since wine I havent been there for a while.
My favorite used to be Buchanans Red Seal, good nice, sweet and perfect with a Partagas Limited edition cigar.
sorry mind drifted a little bit

Good show, but, what! no Caol Ila?! Best Scotch I know.

  92. July 25, 2008

    DAve A

Great show again, Gary and Mott. I like blended scotch, and have tried single malts, but don’t like the horse pee taste. (sorry, but that’s my opinion) Blended like Johnny Walker Blue label is my choice. I belonged to the Scotch of the month club for 2 years, but since they are 100% single malts from very small distilleries – I gave it up. Still have one bottle from 1999!

The guest was a nice laid back guy, good to contrast Gary’s Professional Wrestling style talking. haha. Which I love!

You should get the Mad Money guy into a scotch show – he’d be a hoot!

QOTD: Steve Jobs, Larry Ellison, Bill Gates and Scott McNealy are the companies, it was their personalities, their genius (or in the case of Gates, his mother’s). As they leave, the companies will go adrift within 5 years. Within 8 years they will be like the banks, energy companies of the past 10 years dying by mis-leading CEOs. Watch this space. Buy HP, Buy IBM, ditch these other stocks! There I said it, and it is forever on the internet.

  93. July 25, 2008

Great show. I love wltv every day – but today’s show made my day extra bright. It would be great if you could do more shows about it. In some ways I think scotch drinkers have a worse reputation than wine people. Show the world we aren’t all bad.

I have a couple older single malts I’d be happy to break open for you next time you are out in CA.

    Keep the awesome coming.

  94. July 26, 2008

    Mattle

This was one of the best shows I’ve seen Gary do. Matt and Gary had a very good banter and have complimentary but different energies that I feel really brought a depth. Thoroughly entertaining and a nice change. Kudos.

Going on the sherry cask…….who is interested in a sherry episode? I cast my vote now!

  98. July 26, 2008

    Wine Not?

OMG, Gary, you are so freaking awesome! I can’t believe you did a scotch episode!!!! Just when I thought you were the god of all wine, now you’ve broken into the scotch world. So cool!

I must say, this episode would have been PERFECT if you had included Lagavulin in your line up which, in my opinion, is the ultimate single malt from the islands (closely followed by Caol Ila). But in any case, it totally made me want to have some scotch!

I have always heard that you should do only a minimal amount of water in your scotch….like just a sprinkle, almost. It does bring out the flavors without diluting them.

    In any case, FABULOUS SHOW!!!!!

  99. July 26, 2008

    TWofPasadena

WOW. This was a GREAT episode! I don’t drink Scotch, but I think I’m going to give it a try now. Matt was a perfect compliment to you, Gary.

QOTD: Hard to say, but I think that Apple will always be cutting edge.

Nice to see a Scotch episode. I’ve had a very nice peaty single malt called Lagavulin. Pricey but very nice with that peat moss taste. I rarely drink them though. QOTD- Yes. Steve Jobs has been fantastic for Apple and I would not use any other computer. I can edit my short films. I can record my music.. Great for Graphic Design.. Apple really is tops.
    anyway, nice episode

Yes Apple will survive the departure of Steve Jobs. I think he’s surrounded himself with great people,
Great show? Matt Mullenweg was charming. I think you should do a Scotch or a Beer and Cider show every couple of months just to mix things up. The Scotch show was a breath of fresh air. Well done!

  103. July 26, 2008

McCallum has always been my favorite – the sherry barrel sweetness and smoothness –but I recently compared it to an Irish whiskey, Tyrconnell,
which to my surprise was everybit as smooth…… john

    Rob Howells

Apple will survive after Steve retires because they “borrow” most of the great ideas from Creative Labs anyhow.

    Harold

Big single malt fan here, and in particular the Islay malts.

Ardbeg is my favorite, and the entry-level 10yo Ardbeg is absolutely delicious. Others I’ve enjoyed: Laphroaig, Lagavulin, and Talisker. There are 2 bottles I’m still waiting for a special opportunity to open: A “Tactical” (Talisker) Old Malt Cask 22 yo 1979, and a Caol Ila 23 yo Rare Malts Selection 1978. Got those for great prices while I was at Edinburgh several years ago. I was very tempted to get the Ardbeg “Lord of the Isles” when I was there, but I guess it was just too much money for me. Also got some Oban and Lagavulin Distiller’s Editions that I haven’t gotten around to trying yet too.

Highland Park and The Macallan I like too.

  106. July 26, 2008

    Richard Ritter

Another way to expand my pal! You should have patched in the “scotch” clip from “Anchor Man” for this episode!

QOTD: I’m going to go against the trend on this one and say Apple tanks when Jobs leaves the company. It would be like Wine Library without Gary! It just won’t have the same heart beat.

PS- Gary I’m e-mailing you a show idea.

  107. July 26, 2008

    Chief Tootles.

I’ve been waiting on this show for a while now. Before wine I was an avid Whiskey/Whisky drinker, and still am.

as always great show. i dont think apple can survive with out steve jobs. he is the face of apple. if it wasnt for his introductions to every single new product that comes out, i dont think people would be as interested. i thought Apple Air was ridiculous when i first heard about it… that is off course until i heard steve jobs talking about it. it suddenly became the “must have” product of the month.

anyway keep your shows coming. i’d love to see a toys are us show. haha

Love the scotch concept. ever try Bruichladich? (scots say Brew-laddie — hmmm..)

QOTD: I think that in Jobs path of innovation and and transformation there have been many closely watching eyes, and he has been much of a teacher as well as an inspiration. And when the time is right there will be many who are capable of carrying the apple torch. There often comes a time when the sage surpasses his teacher. Yes?

Haven’t had single malt in some time. Been on a bourbon kick of late. Still like the Thunder Shows that focus on wine the most, though it’s refreshing when Gary pushes the envelope and expands beyond the wine world. Keep exploring Gary!
QOTD: I’m sure Apple will survive. Steve Jobs certainly is Apple’s voice and face, but I would think that by now, his philosophy, approach, and vision are fully integrated into all aspects of the company. They will find another voice and face when the time comes. As has been mentioned before, he’s already groomed his successor(s). I also agree that while the company will likely survive, there will just as likely be a dip after he leaves.

  119. July 26, 2008

    waterdr

Had a number of single malts, including the Laphroig. One taste I always got, was as if you were sitting in a salt marsh, the taste of the ocean.

  120. July 26, 2008

    Susan

Gary & Mott, Don’t think I have had much single malt scotch……………….

  121. July 26, 2008

    Susan

Gary & Mott & Matt, QOTD: Not sure if Apple can survive from such a loss. Steve is a driving force behind many SUPER Apple products. I think yes, they might survive.

  122. July 26, 2008

    Matt Westerman

Great show, Gary! My brothers and I started drinking scotch after our father called us wussies for drinking jack and coke in college. 15 years later, there’s always a bottle of single malt in the cabinet. I drink my share of Scapa, Oban, and Glenmorangie (especially the discontinued Madeira wood version).

QOTD: What’s Apple? Steve who? All depends on the successor.

  123. July 26, 2008

    paul

WAY too much water. It’s interesting to watch folks with what appears to be little experience drinking scotch do a tasting. A small splash at most after tasting straight to coat the palate, at least for the regular bottlings.

So what’s the big deal about sherry casks? Simple – today most scotches are aged in used bourbon casks, although traditionally sherry casks were used (until the Spanish revolution made getting sherry casks very difficult). Now there are a lot of different casks used. (I remember seeing casks from Wild Turkey being used in a barrel room in Ft. Wiliam.)

The Talisker would be expected to have a bit of a smoky, peaty nose. That’s it’s character. Question: what makes the 175 special? Special aging? More info, please.

For the cask strength Laphroaig, OF COURSE you should add water. It would have been nice if you’d explained cask strength and what scotch makers do to get it to the ABV levels of the other scotches you tasted – by adding water prior to bottling. A little comment about proof would be nice, too. You could have lit the Laphroaig with a match, BTW. And it will kill your PAL in short order unless you add water. BUT NOT TOO MUCH, IMHO.

Anyway, good show. Yes, KenP, Caol Ila would have been nice, but that goes to show that there are a whole bunch of things that need tasting. I guess you need to another scotch show, GV.

  124. July 26, 2008

    indigo

Great, great show Gary. Thanks for having Matt on. You’ve got me convinced to drop 90 BONES on a bottle of Talisker.

Idea: Fridays are either “Laid Back Fridays” or “Other than Wine Fridays”

QOTD: They survive, but kind of like Excite.com surviving.

  125. July 26, 2008

Sorry about that last comment. It came across as a bit chippy. Haven’t had enough coffee this morning. Or enough scotch.

I love how you were talking about Steve and if he ever left Apple, the company would just sink. A friend and I just had that conversation not to long ago. A guess birds of a feather really do flock together.

Plus, I really want to go out and get some scotch now. Thanks Gary. Like I don’t drink enough wine…

  129. July 26, 2008

    PhilB

    Great ep!

Good to see GV experimenting with my favortie, scotch!
Just a little clarification : the age on the bottle always represents the age of the YOUNGEST scotch in the blend (if it is a blend), not the age of the oldest like in the solera system. Plus, your Talisker was a vatted malt, which means it was a blend of single malts only, no grain whisky involved like in what is normally called a blended scotch (J. Walker, Ballantine’s..)

Lots of people refer to Talisker as being “volcanic” : great way to express smokiness and fiery pepper!!

Would love to see more of this! Cognac maybe? Rhum?

  130. July 26, 2008

    Jimmy T

ALRIGHT!!!!! This was incredible. What a great show, one of the best in a while. You two did well together.

QOTD: I just read “Good to Great” by Jim Collins and this question gets at one of his primary findings. I am not sure about whether or not Apple will go beyond Steve Jobs. This is dependent on his leadership today, which I don’t know much about.

  131. July 26, 2008

    Rowland

Gary Gary Gary. you missed a perfect opportunity to talk about America’s dysfunctional drinking culture. Take as an example your guest, while you said youve only been “drunk” 3 or 4 times, while your host nonchalantly replied he had been drunk that many times since that morning. I’m not trying to be insulting to your guest, simply illustrate the vast gulf between American and European drinking cultures. There is a word Americans are constantly saying to express how proud they are of there drunkenness. You all know it; “WASTED.” For Americans, its seems the object of drinking (and therefore the soul purpose of alcoholic beverages) is to become drunk … “Duuuuude Im so waaaaasted!!! I drank this and that and one of those and a few of these and blah blah blah …” How often have YOU heard that? Im not going on some AntiAmerican-Eurocentric rant, because young people are the same everywhere, but you can hear this out of 30 and 40 year olds here. Its suppose to be about food, family, love, culture, health, moderation … the alcohol itself should be regarded as nothing more than a preservative, allowing you to enjoy grapes and apples and wheat many months or years after they were harvested. Alcohol shouldnt be used as an excuse to debauch yourselves.

  132. July 26, 2008

    Vincent

Right on Gary! We do need more scotch shows. One every two weeks is a great idea!

  133. July 26, 2008

    Justin

Thanks for the Scotch show Gary. I’ve been a big fan of Laphroaig for awhile now. I personally prefer it with one ice cube, as it melts you get the just the right amount of water to be able to taste the flavors in the Scotch.

QOTD: I think not only will Apple survive but they will continue to flourish.

  134. July 26, 2008

    Richard

Great show! When you do your next scotch show in two weeks how about including Bunnahabhain 12.

  135. July 26, 2008

    Chris D

Great show !! – thanks. Very insightful from young Matt as well … I liked the experimenting with the water .. I typically drink scotch on the rocks.. and you get that added water component later on…

    – How about CIGARS and Scotch on the couch !!

QOTD – I really don’t know enough about how Apple runs and Steve Jobs … but would hope he has laid enough foundation and surrounding himself with thr right people for Apple to continue their mission.

    More Scotch shows….I liked it

  136. July 26, 2008

    aaronb

Nice episode, Gary! I’ve been a single malt fan for years and was wondering when you would get around to a Scotch episode. Laphroaig is my favorite, but I find the 10 year old a bit harsh. Not a big fan of cask strength whiskies either (see Paul’s comment above). The 15 year old Laphroaig is much nicer, and for a truly transcendent experience, you should try the 30 year old (though it’s hard to find and at $300/bottle it’s not for everyone).

  137. July 26, 2008

    Steve

    Gary:
The Laphroig is an awkward example of the Islay single malts. Lagavulin is a much smoother, more polished whisky, yet with the same smokey, salt water spray components.

  138. July 26, 2008

    Bob B

I haven’t read any of the comments yet – but…

    WAAAAAAAAY too much water.

Just add a splash – usually cool water, not more than a teaspoon.

If you don’t like scotch, then add the amount you guys did. Adding double the amount of water turns it into something completely different. Adding ice cools it too much, limiting the tastes. Might as well buy jug scotch if you are going to do that. Try it sometime – you’ll see the difference

  139. July 26, 2008

    Eric

Nice show. I’m travelling for work and it was good to have the diversion.

  140. July 26, 2008

    John Farrin

Oh Jesus, another thing to spend my money on, THANKS!

QOTD: Since Microsoft seems to have survived the retired Bill Gates, I suppose Apple will survive the loss of Jobs. The aura that both those icons have produced will probably insulate those companies during the transition generation.

  141. July 26, 2008

    Oklahoma Michael

The Ying and Yang for days!!! Awesome show QOTD= what precent of the population even know who Steve Jobs is?? Yes, Apple will survive. They will outlast Mr. Jobs By decades

QOTD: Apple goes away when Steve leaves…

I saw my favorite Scotch on one set of glasses you were using….Glenmorangie…look forward to it being on one show in the future…

    teckdeck2008

i loved the show, i drink scotch more than i drink wine, although i can’t always afford the really good single malt whiskeys most of the time. but i tend to indulge in it more than most college students i think.

    qotd:
apple will definitely survive after steve jobs, because all the stuff he has done is so integrated into the future of technology that the company can’t be ignored. where microsoft and other computer companies have worked hard to just make a good product recently, apple has been very good about selling a whole idea and attitude towards technology which will give it a stronger presence compared to other tech companies. i think this is most obvious in the iphone and the way it provides accesibility to everything you might need all the time. i haven’t seen so many people worked up and eager to get a tech product in so long and now it every other company even touching on related products is trying to cash in on the hype. and so the i phone will stay around because it has defined a whole generation of technology, and not just because its a good product.

  144. July 26, 2008

    Karl Laczko

Single Malt, oh the memories! I don’t drink much now, but Talisker and Lagavulin were my favourties (and Glenmorangie as a “weekday drinker”). I always had it straight, I’ve heard a dash of water can bring out more flavours, but never really experimented with that.

QOTD – Jobs out of Apple, Gates out of Microsoft, life goes on, those companies are too big to make a major impact in the short term.

  145. July 26, 2008

    Slats

QOTD: If apple will take the stick out of its ass when Steve leaves and opens OS X to hardware other than apple’s they will succeed.

I love good scotch. In order of addiction: Beer, Scotch, Wine, Coffee.

  146. July 26, 2008

    Andreas

One of the best episodes i’ve ever seen. Big fun, although I actually never ever had a Scotch in my live (and even don’t know if I want to).

QOTD: Apple will survive, caus it’s got tooo many customers.

  147. July 26, 2008

    Dean Ticks

Great show. Helps us all to expand our pal’s horizons.

QOTD: Been a Mac-head since the Mac SE in the 80’s. Personally, I think Apple will do well if / when Jobs is no longer at Apple. Whoever does takeover though, HAS TO have the same amount of passion and forward thinking that Jobs has. Jonathan Ive’s design skills have been a huge force also.

Look at all the technology he’s been behind that was initially mocked. Desktop publishing, Mac interface, iPod, iPhone, just to name a few.

  148. July 26, 2008

    archr5

awesome episode. Would love to see gary’s tastes evolve over multiple episodes. Also everyone needs to peer pressure Gary into trying cigars. (peer pressure would totally work right?)

  149. July 26, 2008

    sr. don julio

QOTD: Apple will survive quite well. Those of us who thinks Vista SUCKS BIG TIME, we embrace our Macs even more.

Great show! Since you’ve given time for scotch… how about giving some time for good old Kentucky bourbon!

  150. July 26, 2008

    Mike L

Wow, fun show. I used to love my single malts!

QOTD: Apple will survive w/ out Steve Jobs, but it’ll be a meh company in 20 years. If they lose their creative edge, it’ll be sooner than 20 years..even 10.

  151. July 26, 2008

    Patrick

    Gary,
Next time you try your single malts and want to add water, I recommend you do this. Pour a glass neat and pour a second glass with 2 to 3 **drops** of water. Give each a “sniffy sniff” and a taste. Notice how the drops of water really open up all of the wonderful smells in the scotch and expand the taste without too much dilution. I’m a new fan, currently studying for the NY bar and use your shows as breaks between long study session. Thanks!

  152. July 26, 2008

    MajickMan

Awesome episode. Next time I’d love to see you try The Glenlivet Nadurra aged 16 years Cask strength 59.2% a/v. And now I’m going to have to go out and see if I can even find a bottle of the 175 anniversary edition Talisker as I’ve had the aged 10 years version and thought it was rather good. I’d love to see more of these every couple of weeks. Not to often or you may not have a liver for long ;)

  153. July 26, 2008

nice episode! big-ups – it’s about time! when’s that root beer episode goin’ up now, huh GV?!?

  154. July 26, 2008

    matt warren

Another awesome show Gary. I’m really liking your guests lately.

QOTD: Apple will survive, it won’t be as sexy without Steve but it’ll keep going. Other companies need a Steve Jobs to get them out of the toilet. Here’s to the idea of innovative leadership. (sippy sip)

  155. July 26, 2008

    Bill

While I look forward to GV’s wine reviews, this review struck me as amateurish. Neither Gary nor the guest knew more about the topic than any other casual Scotch drinker. Frankly, I don’t see the point, other than mixing it up, to degrade what is an otherwise informative show. If GV ventures into a topic he knows little about, at least invite a guest who knows what he’s talking about.

Loved the show Gary, glad to see you covering scotch, a drink very near to my heart. Since you’re a fan of heavily peated whiskies, I’d love to see you give Ardbeg a try.

  157. July 26, 2008

    Lawrence Leichtman

I think this is more than enough scotch when your guest tells me how often he has been drunk. Though in general not many people are going to use single malt scotches at these prices to get their drunk on. When you add in cigars that is the end for me.

  158. July 26, 2008

    Adam

I’ve been watching for a while, but never left a comment until now (sorry!) but I have to say, this was one of my favorite shows. More scotch shows would be amazing.

QOTD: I think Apple will survive because while Steve Jobs might be a driving force, I am sure that he did not think of all of Apple’s current products. It is just too big of a company for that.

  159. July 26, 2008

    Lenny

Good show guys! I’ve been a big fan of Laphroaig for years now even though the first time I tasted it I couldn’t take the peat. But my friend loved it and at his place we always had a glass, and I came around to it.
QOTD: Apple didn’t do so well when Steve was away the last time, it’s a hard question to think about because I just love my Mac (and my iPod and the iPhone) and really don’t like it when I have to use a PC. So Steve has to be around until they can download whatever it is that he does to disc.

  160. July 26, 2008

    B-Melt

QOTD: Look at what happened to Apple when Jobs stepped away. Right into the crapper. Mr. Man comes back, and poof, iTunes. I hope his retirement is far, far away.

Oh, and Bill. Lighten the heck up bud. It’s just a video blog and Gary is having fun. Isn’t that the point?

  161. July 26, 2008

    karli

that was an AMAZING episode. i really enjoyed seeing matt there being the side-kick “boy wonder” in knowing about scotch. it was really enjoyable and the secret is, even though i’ve gone to wine tastings when i was 11, i really enjoyed trying scotch at 17 a couple of times because of the adventure in flavor.

    this was enjoyable!

QOTD: Apple would survive without Steve Jobs, BUT I don’t believe that they would be able to be new and inventive in the tech world as they are now. It would probably be just filled with little fixes…nothing evolutionary.

  162. July 26, 2008

    Paul M

QOTD: If Jobs leaves suddenly Apple will wither, if he plans to train a successor or two it could survive but I don’t think he will and so ultimately they are toast, but that could easily be 20 years from now.

  163. July 27, 2008

    Oscar FL

OK, First: Great show guys, truly great. I have not been a scotch drinker primarily because of the things you talked about on the show, I feel it is way too bold for my taste and I get a sense of a mule kick out of drinking scotch, and no, I don’t remember watering it down if ever i drank a glass or two. Now this being and Inspiring show – wine library – I will definitely try at least the Talisker which is available here, let’s hope I can get through the ordeal with a new sense of enlightenment.( not a headache )

QOTD: Yes, I think it will, progress is progress after all and he will still have a seat in the board for some time after, so many ideas and directions would have to at least be presented to him in some sort. Remember when Woz left and people thought what if, well there is your answer.People with ideas never retire or die, visionaries are great always, even beyond the grave.

  164. July 27, 2008

    Micha

Outstandig Episode Gary and liked the Single Malt Theme a lot. Also a big hand for your sympathic guest. Was a good match.
QOTD: pooh, difficult to answer. needs a deeper look then i have. But i guess, the story will go on, even without steven jobs.

GV & Matt – Excellent show, Scotch is something that is near and dear to my heart. Would love to see more, maybe not every 2 weeks, but maybe monthly…

QOTD – Steve Jobbs has created iSteve, which will run Apple, and no one will ever know the difference… they will keep reshaping the tech world one great product at a time

    Hey Gary,

Thanks for branching out and trying some Scotch. Good show – a lot of us wine drinkers also enjoy Scotch whiskey and other trappings of “the good life” – like cigars. Know you won’t be doing any cigar tastings any time soon.

Just like Ron Burgundy said “Scotch, Scotch, Scotch, I love Scotch, Scotch in my belly, Scotch, Scotch, Scotch”.

    Have a great day.

    Jim Lovgren

Wow! Fantastic episode. I’ve so been looking forward to this.

I’m currently taking your approach to exploring and experiencing wine and applying it to single malt scotch instead. Each time I buy 2 new bottles I pick a scotch I’ve never had before. So far I’ve tried The Macallan Fine Oak 12yo, The Glenlivet 15yo, Laphroaig Quarter Cask & Ardbeg Uigeadail.

My current 2 bottles are Lagavulin 16yo and Bowmore 12yo. I’m not that big of a drinker so it takes me a while to go through 2 bottles :)

QOTD: No idea. Probably. Who cares ? ;)

  169. July 27, 2008

    Rafael

Concerning the show, I should try more scotch and whiskey, as I’m in Ireland for work and my family is in Switzerland each time I come back I bring a new whiskey and we taste it together so that each one can tell if they like it or not.

Concerning Steve, he’s such an iconic figure I don’t think he will ever retire, or if he does the price of the apple action will loose easily half it’s value or more.

  170. July 27, 2008

It was fun watching you two sit there and get ripped, you know you got buzzed.

    Little Jonny H

Fantastic Show, Matt, GV, and Mott! I’ve been waiting for this one, and I finally got it!

QOTD: Steve can’t possibly be doing it all… There must be at least 10-20 peeps at app. that could replace him.

  176. July 27, 2008

    manonthemoon

Now being a huge scotch lover this has to be the best WLTV ever, hands down. You should really look into doing more of these since you dig scotch and there are so many out there to try. Plus I am sure the buzz is much better than from the wine. Maybe next time my fav, Oban, will get a shot since you like the peaty types.

QOTD: It will survive, but its hard to tell if it will thrive or not. All depends on who the new guy is.

Great show. I like that you mixed it up and covered another topic that interests me as much as wine. I enjoy single malts, especially Laphroaig, which I was happy to see you give some props. I was able to taste several single malts on a trip to Scotland a while back, and this brought back some find memories of that great trip. I wouldn’t mind seeing the occasional episode on other noble spirits. Strong work, Gary!

    Great show.

I have been yearning for a scotch show.

Would love to see one every few weeks or so.

  181. July 27, 2008

    Colin Nicol

    Gary,

Thanks so much for doing a scotch show, I’ve been waiting a long time for one of these. I was so pleased you did the Laphroaig, a friend of mine recently visited Scotland and brought be back a bottle of the 10 year old you drank. It was awesome to drink it with you guys, it was definitley a forrest fire in my mouth.

QOTD: I think they will be fine post Jobs. Surely there are other people there coming up with the great ideas they go with and its not entirely him. Maybe they need somebody like Gary to take over when he’s finished!?

  182. July 27, 2008

    Darrell T.

    Great Show Single Malts!!
I was drinking Scotch before I got into wine, I have had the scotchs you tasted and many others. BTW, i drank Balvenie before all the changes to the brand, different age statements and woods for aging and the bottle shape, at one time Balvenie SMS hab the most distinctive bottle in all Scotchdom.
Your, future tastings must include Blends, there are some killer blends that will appeal to some vayniacs also, and pairings with food, especially chocolate!!

  183. July 27, 2008

    Dr. Lance Aoyagi

Scotch! What a great surprise! I was into Scotch before I was into wine. I do, however, follow Gary’s credo of trusting your own palate, and I definitely tend to like the more Sherry Oak-influenced Scotches such as the Balvenie–although I have not tasted the Balvenie 17yr. I usually drink the slightly more pedestrian Balvenie Doublewood. My favorite Scotches to date are the Macallan 18 and 21 year olds, as they are also aged in Sherry Oak casks and are just wonderful. I guess my palate leans more towards dark caramel and honey than peat and smoke. After viewing this episode of WLTV, however, I am very interested in sampling the Talisker 175! I am not a fan of the standard Talisker(s) but Gary’s description has sparked my curiosity. Finally, I think that Apple will not be the same without Jobs.

  192. July 28, 2008

    MB Dallas

GV – Thanks for doing the Scotch Episode, and especially for tasting Laphroaig! Glad to see that it delivered.

    Couple interesting Laphroaig facts:

1 – Laphroaig was legally imported during prohibition for either medical use or disinfectant, because no one expected anyone to drink it!

2 – I can confirm Matt’s suggestion that this is not a good scotch to drink on a date. My wife will not sit anywhere near me when I drink Laphroaig!

  193. July 28, 2008

    Sarno

Great show, wish you would do more liquor shows. Love to hear what you think of the Crown XR and other liquors like it.

QOTD: Apple will go right into the toilet just like before without Jobs, unless he can find someone to train to think like he does before he steps away. I just hope he steps away on own his time and not because of some illness.

  194. July 28, 2008

    pawncop

An interesting show. I am not nor will I ever be a serious Scotch drinker. But it was very interesting to learn the differences.

QOTD – I do not think Apple will survive in the present form without Mr. Jobs.

  195. July 28, 2008

    Daniel

hey, im a big scotch fan. i really like the oban 14 yr, nice and even flavored with an underlying sweetness, and not overly somkey. I highly suggest seeking it out! keep the scotch shows coming!

    Neener

I am new to the vlog…having just signed up last week (after viewing you on Mahalo). I’ve already seen 18 episodes though. Anyhow, I love that you are doing Scotch (my fav, after wine of course) too! I would highly recommend the Balvenie Doublewood or Dalwhinnie. Those are the two that I habitually keep on my shelf, with one or two other single malts that I’m trying for the first time.

    Yes, Apple will survive Steve.

  197. July 28, 2008

    Colin Lukens

GV – Nice to see the scotch branch-out. QOTD – Fairly ignorant on this one – but maybe the personality of the company would change.

  198. July 28, 2008

Awesome show Gary. Also just finished watching the linked up match classic stuff with names like The body, Gorrilla, and Mean Gene. Apple will be ok without Jobs

  199. July 28, 2008

    Pete

    great show.

re. QOTD – Apple’s survival post-Jobs is entirely dependent on the future leader. The entire culture at apple is command and control. When Jobs left the first time it lost its way pretty quickly. When (and I hope it is a long time away) he leaves this time it will have to be run by a pretty amazing substitute or it will fade away. OR, Steve will have to start creating an organization that is designed to live without him. Thus far, he has seemed very uninterested in this.

My best guess, it will quickly fade but won’t die post Steve.

Love the scotch discussion. Problem with Scotch for me is that the cost of entry is just too high to do frequent samplings from different providers at home and too many bars stock the 3 standards. There are places that have deeper, more varied lists but they are few and far between.

  200. July 28, 2008

    Jason S.

QOTD: Not likely – they tanked when he was gone and look what they’ve done since he came back. Track record speaks for itself.

Fun show today! You really should get into some single cask bottlings, where each barrel is different from the next. I love the infinite variations in scotch!

  201. July 28, 2008

    Derek

Excellent show. I’ve been a fan of Laphroaig for a bit now, but Talisker is also great.

QOTD: Apple will survive Steve Jobs, but it will change drastically. Wouldn’t be surprised if they go down the road of cheaper gear. Of course, that could spell Apple’s end, but may also make it just another technology company.

  202. July 28, 2008

  205. July 28, 2008

    Scottie P

Fun show, now I need a scotch! That’s a little hard get get during work hours.

QOTD: Apple will tumble pretty far without Mr. Jobs. But Apple will rebound. Some new hero will take the reigns. Things are usually cyclical. COME ON ECONOMY!!!

  206. July 28, 2008

    Deano

WOWZ Gary this episode KILLED it!!! I don’t drink scotch often but a buddy of mine does. He had me taste that Laphroaig and it was good stuff. I found that if you put 2 ice cubes in and let them melt it is the perfect balance :)

    QOTD:
-I think they should be fine if Jobs leaves. They are gaining market share and now with the iPhone i think they are gaining more. Plus the apple computer world is solid as well. They should be fine without him.

  207. July 28, 2008

QoTD: Apple will become a boring company. Survive? yes. But not thrive.

  212. July 28, 2008

    Robert Fulkerson

Great episode guys, if there was one more thing I want to get into besides wine it is scotch. Question of the day though; can Apple survive without Steve Jobs? I think at this point in their life after the iEverything yes. They have spawned a culture of not just niche geeks or digital artists but college students in droves are out there using MacBooks and wearing iPods and talking on their iPhones. Soon Apple will e bringing you their iCulture in homes, cars and fashion and then it transcends tech, computers and a brand to become the way we integrate high tech and our everyday lives.

  213. July 28, 2008

    Blake W

QOTD: I believe that Apple will survive, Steve Jobs has just created an grand slam with the iPhone and I see no end in the near future. Can he manage to mess up a good thing? You bet he can (cough cough..Bill Gates…VISTA).

Fantastic episode GV! I’m a big scotch drinker and love that you incorporated in this into your show.

  214. July 28, 2008

    Paulie D

A ‘wee bit’ of water with scotch is the way to go, but skip the Balvenie and go for the Glenmorangie Sherry Wood. Yes, Apple will survive but it will not be the same growth engine without Jobs – history already proved this.

  215. July 29, 2008

    SmokeyUST

Loved the episode guys. Great job!!!

QOTD: I believe so, but hopefully he has trained someone well, or I think they will become a very very late second player.

  216. July 29, 2008

    Ryan

GV glad you enjoyed the talisker, but I have found that many of their other expression offer much better QPR. You should check out the distiller edition and the 18 yr, I find the 175th anniversary to be tired and boring compared to the two I suggest.

  217. July 29, 2008

    Dan Manu

    Apple will survive

  218. July 29, 2008

    Chris

Apple can survive off of it’s current products as long as no one else challenges them in the future.

So now that I think about it, there is no way apple survives.

  219. July 29, 2008

    Mark

Apple will not survive the long haul. They can carry the success of their current products but once Steve is gone they will lose the visionary and direction. They ultimately will be bought by someone.

  220. July 29, 2008

    Joseph Smarr

Great show, Gary! I too love the Laphroaig, and I think more wine drinkers would enjoy scotch if they gave it a serious try, so thanks for helping fuel the crossover. Photomatt was great as always, and to answer the QOTD, I do *not* think Apple could ever be the same without Steve, and in a way, we already witnessed that during his departure and return in the 90s, during which time Apple nearly died.

  221. July 29, 2008

    lawschooldrunk

    Finally a scotch episode!

Even though you guys didn’t know as much about single malts as you do about wine, it was still fun to watch.

  222. July 29, 2008

Not a big fan of the scotch, but interesting to throw some variety of beverage into the thunder show.

  223. July 29, 2008

    Johnny C. a.k.a SmokinActuary

I agree with Paulie D. A wee bit of water helps bring out the aromatics and the flavor. Try Highland Park 18 Year Old. You really must.

I don’t know if Apple will survive.

  224. July 29, 2008

    TimInSpokane

Very cool show! I have always spent the most money on bottles of wine versus scotch, but I do enjoy a nice scotch on the rocks now and again.

Any plans on doing a bourbon show??? Now that is a show I could sink my….. ummmmm …… liver in to!

QOTD – I think Apple will have a harder time surviving without Steve Jobs than Microsoft will without Bill Gates, but I do think they will survive. Much of the best talent in the computer world, that are interested in the corporate world, tend to gravitate towards Apple anyways….. The tekkie’s I know called Microsoft “Microsuck”, or even worse, “Majorsuck.”

  225. July 30, 2008

    PaVo

GREAT show, love scotch love the show!

QOTD: I don’t know if they can. I think Jobs is THE part of apple. Without him I think they lose their direction, become (fittingly for this episode) watered down. And because of that will fail.

  226. July 30, 2008

    Scottymatt

Having grown up in Nova Scotia (New Scotland) Province in Canada-this show ‘warmed the cockles of my heart’. Gary tasting the elixir of my youth!! Great show! I do equate my present passion to wine collecting, but I do sneak a dram of Lagavulin on more than one occasion. Appreciate the diversification of the show my good man-look forward to more scotch nosings!.

QOTD-The company of Apple without Jobs will survive and thrive-it is not the cult of personality that one good company makes to endure, it is the fabric make up of all the great associates that work for it. There will be another great leader to pick up the reigns from within.

  227. July 30, 2008

    Rajiv

Very interesting show, Gary! Now I’m interested in Scotch.
QOTD: Maybe if Apple hires me I’ll tell them what I think :)

  228. July 30, 2008

    J Crazy

    Love scotch!!!

Apple will take a kick in the scrotum when he’s gone but will absolutely survive.

  229. July 30, 2008

    Christophe

Great show. Scotch is the reason I like stelvin enclosures. Every time I open a screwcap bottle it makes me think about opening a bottle of scotch.

Apple will survive Steve Jobs. They will reinvent themselves through some other mouthpiece.

  230. July 30, 2008

    Matt

QOTD: I’m sure he already has everything in place in case anything does happen where he cannot run Apple any longer, probably some sort of clone or artificial intelligence. For all we know, he could already be replaced!!!

  231. July 31, 2008

    YoungDave

QOTD: YES the cultural and social phenomenon that is Apple will most definitely survive Steve Jobs after he is gone, of course after Jobs’ careful advisement and ushering in of a smart, like-minded visionary of a successor.

  232. July 31, 2008

    JayZee

Interesting show, but it ain’t wine.

QOTD: No. Well, Apple will survive, but it won’t flourish.

    Matt Wright

    Hi Gary,
I’ve watched WLTV for a while now and really enjoy most of the programs. I have to say this was one of the best episodes ever, good co-presenter. Give him a job.

I’m currently working in Bordeaux, and I have to say that there are enough appellations to keep me going for the year I have left before I return to the UK, but I will try to extend my palate, but I do love France.

    All the best
    Matt

  234. August 1, 2008

    Dr. J

Gary, You needed the Reidel single malt glasses for this episode. Seriously. I just attended a tasting hosted by George Riedel and I was blown away by how these glasses, just as with his wine glasses, direct the aromas and flavors to the correct areas of your nose and palate for maximum enjoyment. Give it a whirl. Compare the taste of your favorite single malt in a regular glass and then in the Reidel scotch glasses and you will become a true believer. Also, the glass design corrects for the alcohol burn so that you don’t need to add water to get at the true aromas and flavors.

  235. August 2, 2008

    Dan-o

GV – I got to tell you – Great Show!
I was a huge Single Malt fan in my earlier (pre-wine) days.
I still have ~10 bottles in my collection including Dalwhinnie (my favorite), Oban, Lagavullin (rich man’s Laphroig), and others.
I have always been a “neat” single malt drinker, but I may need to try some with water after seeing your reaction.
    Very good guest!

QOTD – Great question. Jobs will go down in history as Bell, Edison, Ford and other great inventors or commercial geniuses. Apple may not survive as a company with its founder gone. However, his name will endure forever. Life will move on to the next technology advance.

  236. August 2, 2008

    Kristen

Tried scotch, it’s just too much for me. But really good show!

A scotch and bourbon lover, but have within the past few years, embraced the beauty of fine rums. Would love to see a rum show. Some amazing things happening out there. Wish Wine Library had a better selection, too.

Interesting show. I’ve never actually had a single malt scotch and probably won’t for some time. I’m not into whiskey and single malts are a little too expensive for me. I think it would be interesting to have shows for other hard liquors. I’d be really interested in a show on Anejo Tequila (which I actually find more drinkable that whiskey).

Being from Houston myself I’m somewhat disappointed in the lack of enthusiasm that Matt had for the Astros.

QOTD: I don’t think Apple will survive after Steve retires.

Scotch! Outstanding. I glad you tried the water. Most master distillers recommend adding a little water to the single malt to bring out more of the flavors. I loved the show. Nice solid guest, too.

QOTD: I’m sure Jobs has picked the right management to head the company in the direction he wants it to go. It could get interesting as the years progress and he gets farther and farther away.

GV – I’m curious that your fear of the oak monster didn’t translate into your scotch preferences. I recently met with Marko Karakasevic of Charbay, who with his father has been making some really interesting spirits up on Spring Mountain in Napa. Marko loves distilling, and getting the cleanest consecrations of flavors from his base into his spirits – and he is vocal about minimalizing the oak to let the natural flavors shine through (like you push for in wine). He made this fascinating Whiskey made from Pilsner beer (real beer from a local brewhouse). It was dark, complex, and a touch of a sweet caramel on the finish that reminded me of some other great small batch producers (like Michter’s US*1). If you’re really thinking about featuring liquors more often, I hope you’ll focus on the smaller artisan producers, rather than just another review of the big name spirits out there.

QOTD: Sure, he didn’t invent the ipod or do all the marketing himself – he has a great team of innovative designers. Wall-E ran OS X, don’t forget.

    OMG!!
I was way into single malt scotch before I got seriously into wine. I could talk to you hours about it but will keep it short here. Talisker is indeed awesome and provides a fantastic balance of the honey and wine overtones of the highland scotches with the peaty/smokey flavors of the Islays. If you like the Talisker you might like Oban too. The Laphroaig is great too but if you like the peaty Islay scotches, the Lagavulin is supreme. Also, more aged versions of Laphroaig, like the 15 and 25 year olds are more refined and smoother with yet more concentration.
Enough said – I’m a fan of your single malt scotch episodes.

I think the reason Gary didn’t like the Balvenie as much with the water is that you added far too much. I usually use a pipette to add water (when it wants it) to control how much I add (a few drops is usually right). As for adding twice as much water as there is whisky…not sure WHERE your guest got that!!!

Best approach is to add a drop (from a pipette) at a time – tasting each time – until it tastes how you like it. It should taste more or less as it does with no water but just a little more open.

+1 to the bourbon show comment. I’d definitely be interested in seeing a few of the heavy hitters up against one another. Perhaps a blind tasting?

Hey, good episode. No spitting from GV of the single-malt Scotch, interesting. Both yer cheeks are starting to look a bit *rosy*. I’ve enjoyed a flight of single-malt scotches up at the Scottish Lion Inn in NH. I’m also half Scottish and my name starts with MAC. My ‘clan’ started in 1039 or something. I can’t stand wrestling but Randy Savage was pretty frickin’ funny.

QOTD: I remember what happened to Apple the first time Jobs left. Anyone remember the Newton? It was revolutionary it had handwriting recognition and was a complete rethinking of the personal computer all the way back in 1993. It should have been the a huge hit, but John Sculley couldn’t make it happened. Matter of fact until Jobs agreed to come back, it did not look like there would be an Apple Computers much longer.

I would be very interested to see many more Scotch tasting episodes. There are way too many wines out there for me to stay monogamist, but with Scotch – I can say, “this is what I fancy” and not feel – I am missing out! Unlike wine, with Scotch I can be very satisfied sticking to what I like.

Try Glenmorangie [Port Wood Finish, Sherry Wood Finish and my favorite Nectar d’Or] and Macallan next time.

Lagavulin, Oban, Caol Ila are great if peat is your thing, if not, stick with the Macallan and the Dalwhinnies…

Awesome a Scotch episode…. about a month ago I went to a tasting with a rep from The Glenlivet and it was really cool. I got to taste the whole line of Glenlivet single malts and spent like 2 hours talking to the guy and asking all kinds of random questions. But anyway the main point was that rocks are always a bad idea for scotch because the cold closes down the flavor profile just like with beer or wine. Distilled room temperature water is preferred with only like 10%-20% of the volume of the Scotch, which he said opened up the flavor and after trying all of the Scotches without and then with water there was definitely a big difference especially in the cask strength which is of undetermined variable higher alcohol levels because it isn’t regulated down with water like regular strength and also isn’t filtered and a splash of water makes a HUGE difference. Also the swirling was good for the sniffy sniff to get more of the scent into the air in the glass. My favorites from the tasting were the 15 y/o french oak which has 30% stored in new french oak for 3 years before being transferred back to bourbon barrels… I thought it was awesome especially at about $50. The Nadurra which is their cask strength was very good too. I also really like the balvenie portwood.

QOTD: umm they kinda sucked when he left for a while in the 90s so nope they’ll crash when he retires… btw ipod sucks creative zen rocks it for half the price

Great show! Awesome guest and great interaction. Ive been interested in scotch and I think the next time Im out on the town I might but a drink….maybe a bottle somewhere down the line. Thank you for opening up new doors for us once again! QOTD: Im only going to say yes because it would be horrible for the economy to lose all those jobs. I personally hate Apple and refuse to use their products. I dont like how they run their products and I absolutely HATE their commercials. They make Macs look like trendy crap and youre an idiot if you dont buy it. That right there = no sale for me.

I’ll agree that single malt scotch is just way too expensive to drink every day. However, there is one particular brand that is very good and won’t cost you an arm and a leg: Lismore.

It’s not the best, but it’s way better than your every day drinking blended scotch. I believe it is a speyside malt and it is quite good. Not too smoky or peaty. Give it a try.
