I think I may have left the first comment a while back predicting Favre would be a Jet. I was born in Wisconsin and a long time Packer fan and a thunderhead as well. I think it is only appropriate that I get tickets to a Jet game and we go — any interest? Which game?

QOTD: Hopefully it will be the 2005 Doisy Vedrines that I ordered from WL after I read your book! (haven’t popped it yet!)

What a great show Gary! The freehand camera makes me think you were on a boat ;)

@QOTD: The 1999 Rieussec we had last week was amazing!

    Great Show!!!

QOTD: Favorite is probably the 2003 Chateau Clos Haut-Peyraguey 1er Cru Sauternes. I’m a huge sauternes fan and for the price the Clos Haut-Peyraguey is pretty damn decent.

    Great Show Gary,

I have not had a Sauternes.
I haven’t had one yet because up until 10 minutes ago I did know what it was.
Now that I do – I’ll be on the lookout for it.

QOTD: I once had the fortune of tasting a 1947 d’Yquem….yeah. It really rocked my face off. I was even skeptical, but it still rocked my F-ing face off.

What is it with the French and tables??? Why can’t they build one that’s stable??? I thought those bottles were going over several times during the episode!

    QOTD: Right now!

    Hi Gary,

    2 wines, 197 points… WOW… but that is what they are…

anyway, fave. I had a 375 ml d’ Yquem back in 98 (the 82) and it was sensational, hard to describe the wine…

anyway, hope you get back safe, enjoying your neck of the woods this week. Please tell people to go see Bottle Shock which opened tonight here!!

    thanks,

Your knowledge is extensive. Fascinating. Entertaining. Like it when you weave in your historical knowledge of wines and winemaking along with your tasting insights. Keep up the great work.

Sauternes are still underdiscovered. They change like crazy over the years in smell & taste–same vintage/same bottle. Best after 10 years of age as the sweetness lessens & the color gets orange. You can open these, pump them up & redrink a month or two later from the fridge & it still will be fine. Robert Parker does not like to barrel taste these & give specific ratings due to change in character/sweetness that occurs after bottling. These wines will get there time in the sun eventually as I believe that Port will make a huge comeback once people discover the value/price/performance ratio there.

I have only had a few decent Sauternes. I think that since most Sauternes are bottled in clear bottles, this can hurt the aging process on the shelf, and though these wines tend to be taken care of on the retail side, you cannot control the travel process up until then, look for color changes. I have found that these wines brown fast when over exposed to light. Much like an apple or pear. During my 6 year stint working for a wine distributor I was privileged to taste an 1983 d’Yquem. I dont know how it is tasting now, but it totally blew my skirt up at the time. After only being able to find pseudo affordable, cloying, and sugar saturated Sauternes, this 83 was an incredible treat. I can’t wait to seek out the Doisy and see what it has to offer today, and later.

    Cheers!

I love this show. This is classic GV. Thanks Gary.

QOTD: I have a tough time with really sweet things. I haven’t had a Sauterne, but I’ll try and seek this one out.

I sprung for 2 bottles of the 05 Cos. I’ve been good at not getting 1 or 2 more and have instead been seeking out the 04s. You’re not helping matters Gary. :)
