man it looked like that bottle of Cos was going to fall over. QOTD: so far only one bottle of sauternes and while it was good there was a lot of what I thought was volatile acidity on the nose. smelled just like nail polish remover.

Nice episode — love your classy spit bucket! :)

QOTD: I don’t have a favorite sauterne, but honestly I’ve never had one I didn’t like. They’re an occasional treat for us, and well worth every penny.

I was gone on vacation and didn’t have internet connection for 2 weeks. Really missed WLTV and you, Gary! Good to be back. Now I’ve got lots of episodes to catch up on.

QOTD – I had a Climens a couple of years ago but can’t remember the vintage. It was really eye opening. Thanks for the show today. I plan to buy at least one 05 Cos D’estournel. It’s going for $310 a pop here in the DC area. But it was the 97 Cos D’estournel that made me understand what Bordeaux was all about. I’ve had most vintages since so I’ll go into debt for the 05 if I have to!

QOTD: never had one, since im new to all the “fancier” wines. but I will deffinitely add it to the list of what to look for…

I’ve never had a Sauternes. Guess it is time to try one. Nice show.

I was hoping you would have a show where you tasted some of your 101 picks. This one was great! I’ll try a Sauternes soon.

Loved Lafaurie-Peyraguey 03, had it after some profiteroles, which may be an odd choice because of the richness of the dessert, but i thought it actually worked because i got a surprising dark chocolate note on the finish which was fantastic. Very complex and a little on the lighter side, i loved it. Hope to try the Doisy soon!

    Great show Gary!

    John Farrin

    He’s Baaack!

QOTD: Never had one and, basically, just not into dessert wines. But, again, you may change my mind.

  25. August 6, 2008

    Mark

I bought a 375ml bottle of the ‘05 Doisy-Védrines back in February, just because it seemed like a solid bottle of dessert wine for a good price, and at the time I had not had any Sauternes. Well, I didn’t drink it and when the book came out, buy was I glad I didn’t. I’ll be buying some more of the ‘05 so I can go ahead and drink the bottle I have and I’ll probably even be pre-ordering on the ‘07 in the near future.
If I may recommend some other great Sauternes, ‘05 Chateau Coutet rocked my face off earlier this year in a Bordeaux tasting, and that runs about $50/bottle. Also, the 2004 Lieutenant de Sigalas is maybe the best value in Sauternes I’ve ever had. It brings straight balance, elegance, and thunder for $20 for a full bottle. That wine is already beginning to turn dark. Which mens its a Sauternes to drink now, and one where you shouldn’t have to wait for half your life to enjoy it in its fullest.

    QOTD: 2003 Château Rieussec. Yummy.

  27. August 6, 2008

QOTD I haven’t had enough to have a favorite. I still have a slight preference for Tokaj over Sauternes, though

1976 D’Yquem. I like Barzac’s as well. Have great memories of Suidiart and Climens as well. There are 2000, 2002 and 2004 Climens in my wine storage as well. Can’t afford even a half bottle of D’Yquem now. I assume either you didn’t stock the Doisy or have run out of it.

  35. August 6, 2008

    sr. don julio

QOTD: no specific favorite but I have had a few that were quite different in the overall balance that GV mentions.

    Good show!

  36. August 6, 2008

    Naysen

QOTD: I’ve had more experience with the Chenin Blanc dessert wines from Loire, which have been great; but I did recently open the ‘05 D-V to my great pleasure. I drank through that half-bottle after dinner over the work week and generally paired w/ NY-style Cheesecake topped w/ Apricot preserves. More than anything (fruit, taste-complexities, etc.), I love this wine for its impeccable balance and loftiness. If there’s one thing I don’t appreciate in dessert wines, it’s the over-sugarfied and cloying characteristics that are too often at the forefront. Curious how this stellar effort compared to something more worldly — I opened the ’04 Petit Védrines for a try, and while the P-V made for an interesting experience (given the crazy sweet rubber/plastic inner-tube scents), I wouldn’t place the two bottles on the same decade or even within two decades of each other.

  37. August 6, 2008

    Peter Wood

QOTD – 1966 Chateau Suduiraut. I also agree TOTALLY with you that Sauternes and Tokaji are stupidly underpriced. I just managed to get a six pack of 50cl bottles of Crown Estates 6 putts Tokaji 1993 (a BRILLIANT year) for less than £150. These wines will outlive me and I’m only 30!

  38. August 6, 2008

    David Dadekian

QOTD: I’ve got one in the wine chiller right now, just waiting for a good day. My wife is a big dessert wine lover and she’s still just sipping things while nursing. But soon!

  39. August 6, 2008

    Garrick

    Great show!

QotD: Never had one, never seen a sauternes in any shops near me.

QOTD – Chateau Suduiraut . . . what was it 1990? Can’t remember. Also, while not a Sauternes, the Noble Riesling from D’Arenberg has been a very good performer in the past. Very well balanced. Tropical fruit overtones (pineapple, banana, coconut), with some waxy, petrol notes.

  42. August 6, 2008

    Ken

QOTD – 1967 D’Yquem. BUT I think 2002 Sine Qua Non Sémillon Mr. K The Straw Man stacks up against any Sauternes!

QOTD- Never had one, but I’m looking now.

QOTD: Chateau Coutet forgot the vintage.Have a Chateau D’Yquem 2003 I’m saving for something special. I love Sauternes And Tokaji wines, though I only drink thr on special occasions or when I find a bargain one. Loved the dry Tokaji and the Sauternes you had in some of your secret packs. HEY WHEN YOU GONNA DO ANOTHER SECRET PACK?!?!

  48. August 6, 2008

    Rossodio

QOTD 1: Without hesitation, I’d say the 1990 Chateau Suduiraut (Ex chateau 2005) – which you rated 92+ on 5/1/07. I had it in mid-May 2008 to celebrate with family and friends, and it was a heavenly experience.

In second place comes the 1971 Chateau Caillou. There’s something to be said for age with Sauternes, as it gives it a distinct complexity different from that that a red picks up (haven’t had much older Montrachet, so can’t speak on how it would compare).

You know, it’s a shame that many people have not experienced a good Sauternes. They have plenty of weight (not to mention alcohol), to the point where a 375ml bottle is fine after a nice dinner for two, and if you’re talking 375’s, the prices are often very reasonable. I personally believe that they are, on the whole, king of QPR in France.

As for your allusion to historical wine trends… it’s interesting to note that the finest wines of the ancient world (Greece, Rome, and the like) were sweeter white wines, though they of course were made differently than Sauternes are made today. There’s something masculine and powerful that can really speak to you in a Sauternes – and at an affordable price.

  49. August 6, 2008

    Ryan W

I really enjoyed this show. I liked seeing you taste your top two wines from your book and would like to see you taste some more.

QOTD – I have not had a Sauternes yet, but I do have one from the last secret pack and am waiting for a good time with friends to have it. Speaking of secret packs, when the heck are we going to have another secret pack?

    Chateau Guiraud

  51. August 6, 2008

    Dr. Dan

I bought 6 bottles of each of those two (on futures from WL, of course) and am now very glad that I did. I concur about GV’s preference for less viscous Sauternes. The cloying sweetness of many has kept me away. I had a chance to try, for the first time, a small sample of a Tokaji a few weeks ago, and I found that to be less viscous with nice crispness. Could be a fan. I’ve got a number of different 2001 Sauternes that I hope will get me primed for the Doisy’s that are on their way.

  52. August 6, 2008

    John

I’m a lurker. I loved watching this episode. This is my first comment. :)

I haven’t had a Sauterne because I haven’t had any wines! I’m only 18. Anyways, love the show, Gary. Keep up the great work.

  53. August 6, 2008

    John

Oh, apparently “Sauternes” has “s” at the end no matter what. Whoops! Shows how much I know about French. :)

  54. August 6, 2008

    Kevin K

QOTD: I got one from WL for ~15 bones that was great. But I haven’t had “the one” yet.

  55. August 6, 2008

    Derek F.

    Great show Gary.

QOTD: I have had some before but I forget the name?? I also have a few 2001 in the cellar.

  56. August 6, 2008

    JonE

Suffering for the cause. Your a good man Gary Vaynerchuk.

QOTD: Taylor Sauterne 1.5, I positioned myself under the plastic spicket and went to town. Actually I haven’t had nearly enough vintage stuff, but I have been impressed on a QPR level with Roumieu-Lacoste.

  57. August 6, 2008

    SpoiledinCalbyPinot

QOTD: Never has a Sauternes! Do not drink desert wines, I am still
working on Napa cab, but I see my palate is changing as I am starting to
    like wines with terroir.

  58. August 6, 2008

    Stay strong Gary. Looks tough.

  59. August 6, 2008

QOD: ‘75 Coutet. I know, but it’s close. There is some Lafaurie-Peraguey and Rieussec available out here in the stix, though …

  60. August 6, 2008

    LuvsChandon

Have not tried Sauternes yet, but have a couple bottles on order from WL.

Typically, I do not enjoy sweet wines, but in the context of entertaining and making a dinner party truly special I’m starting to enjoy them paired with the last course. In very small quantities though!!!

  61. August 6, 2008

    Phil G

    Nice.

QOTD – I haven’t had many, and can’t think of any specific names – but I do enjoy them. Overall, I tend to drink more port after dinner, or German wines for something sweeter… I’ll have t get more into Sauternes soon.

  62. August 6, 2008

    Mike S.

Can’t remember the last sauternes I had – the fact that I can’t remember says it all. Best dessert wine ever: Domaine Baumard Quarts de Chaumes (Loire), a truly mind blowing experience. Had a tokaji (Hungary) Saturday, also incredible.

  63. August 6, 2008

    David Cole

This was the best show this month, maybe this year! It was all about the wine and I loved it!! I will be getting both and laying them down for something special!

  64. August 6, 2008

    canadapete

I may just have to splurge on those.
QOTD. Only had a few, but love the Chat. Gravas

  65. August 6, 2008

    MossyMo

Love the 05 Bordeaux reviews! Did you have to fly directly to Bordeaux to be able to taste these because all the wines are still sitting on the dock in France due to the strike?:-) Wish mine would arrive. Hoping for more 05 Bords to be reviewed!

  66. August 6, 2008

    Saftig

Did you film this episode on a ship at sea? I kept moving my laptop to accommodate for the “tilt.” Funny.
QOTD: I’ve tried a number of Sauternes and they are very flavorful but far too often far too sweet for my palate. I will never say no to Sauternes and look forward to finding “the” one.

  67. August 6, 2008

    Withnail

    Loved the episode!

I’ve had tons of Sauternes (including d’Yquem) – and like them – but don’t have a particular favorite memory.

I do recall having numerous ’88s and ’90s awhile back. Been some time. Not a big dessert wine guy, though they are delicious.

  68. August 6, 2008

    Ryne Nelson

Gary, I’m curious…when did you first have your first Sauterne…*and* would you rate that first bottle less now that you’ve tried something as good as Chateau Doisy Vedrines?

  69. August 6, 2008

    Bill

I had Yquem at a friend’s birthday party about 5 years ago. I forget the vintage, but it was young. Still great stuff.

Nice show. Planning on picking up some Doisy this week and giving it a go, perhaps with some D’Artagnan foie gras pate.

  70. August 6, 2008

    Dominus

Very nice show though unfortunately its going to be tough to find those wines after your book hit the stores. I’ve had maybe 5 of your wines from the book and it took a major effort to find those.

QOTD: I have a few in the cellar but none stand out in my mind that I would remember the name/vintage. If I find the Doisy, I will let you know.

I have a quick question for you. Since you had the ‘89 Haut Brion and were not impressed, is the ‘95 still too young? I was thinking about sharing a glass with you if it was currently worthy.

  71. August 6, 2008

    sam

Hooray for the Thundershow! So inspiring. I watch your show every night and I am always inspired to try new things. I’ve never had a Sauternes. I should, I must and I will…soon.

QOTD: I’m waiting til my 21st B-day. I’ve definitely decided that I’m going to a wine-tasting for my celebration, rather than a bar. Thanks for all the inspiration Gary, keep it up!

  73. August 6, 2008

    2001 Chateau Suduiraut…one of 2 wines I’ve ever scored 100pts.

I guess I need to pick up some of those 2005 Cos at Costco for $182???

  75. August 6, 2008

    The Original Marc

QOTD: Haven’t had one. What am I waiting for? I’m waiting for the one I ordered from WLTV yesterday to get here.

Odd that you compared the first wine to Patrick Ewing; from your description it sounds as though it would have actually won a championship :)

  76. August 6, 2008

QOTD: I believe I had a sauterne at a wine tasting class in 1994.

I couldn’t watch the bouncy video. I scrolled down and listened to the audio. I didn’t want to miss a show.

  77. August 6, 2008

    KyleLikesTies

Hrmmm, I *know* I’ve had a sauternes, but I can’t say I’ve even the slightest recollection what I’ve thought of them, which means I wasn’t super-impressed — certainly, at least, not nearly so much so as you are with the Doisy! I’ll give it another go, though, so next time I’m downtown (tomorrow, probably) it’s Israel and sauternes!

  78. August 6, 2008

    david h.

Finally caught up after missing a week.

QOTD: Never had one but next time I go pick up some wine I’ll look for it.

  79. August 6, 2008

Nice, on-site tastings from the book are fantastic. The passion really came through today… and I really like the quick explanation on why we should trust our own palates’, even on a clearly fantastic desert wine.

QOTD: Haven’t had one, but I just ordered one the other day!!! I don’t roll deep enough (yet!)

Favorite Sauternes is 2001 Château de Fargues. Great episode Gary, but go to some QPRs from Rousillon or Saumur. I am more convinced than ever that there is great wine from other regions that gives just as much pleasure.

  82. August 6, 2008

    Anthony L.

Gary, I really like the idea of you tasting the wines in your book live. Great experience for those of us who have the book.

Hi Gary! Another great show! I was wondering how your top wines were in your book. Great show!

QOTD: Hm, I’ve bought people Sauternes for presents actually, but never tried one myself. Will have to do that soon!

  84. August 6, 2008

I have not had one that I recall, but I will surely seek one out as soon as I can! Thanks for the insight…

QOTD – Still havent had a Sauternes – mostly because the cloying sweetness on many desert wines has turned me off to the catagory – maybe I just need to have a good one to turn that corner

QOTD: That would be the first one I will have in the near future….

Big baller today Gary and I LIKE it!

QOTD: I don’t know which brands, but every Sauternes I’ve tried (and there have been at least 5), I’ve loved, which is very different for me, since I don’t usually like the taste of wine. I wish I could be specific, but I guess I’m working in vaugeries today.

Well, I can say I knew you when… You are getting out of touch with the daily wine drinkers. Still entertaining, but like a window at the mall – no one actually buys or dresses that way. I guess that is normal, the goal is to become a super star and not stay between “internet wonder” and “over the top has been”. Both wines unavailable?? How am I relating to this?

I have watched 400 or more shows, so don’t think me a snob, newbie, or red neck. smile.
No one has done what you have – you should be proud. What is next?

    http://savorhospitality.com/wordpress/
    Hmm. is this transferable?

I will continue to watch and post. Love the Cabs under $20 type shows. Love the French wines to reach to occasionally. You are reaching star-dom and your peebs can’t buy most of your wines tasted. Well, some. I could, but won’t.

QOTD: Sauternes, yes. I’ve had a few. they are good.

    thanks for the good show.

  91. August 6, 2008

I’ve never has a Sauteres. I will be trying one very soon.

QOTD:I’ve had a few, but don’t recall the names. I purchased the Vedrines from this year’s CAS and one or two from previous sales, but gave them as gifts. Not a big fan of dessert wines. Have an Austrian Kracher in the cellar and do enjoy an occasional Port.

Gary,I am a new adict to your show since Itunes put it on the page.
    I am catching up !

QOTD : Chateau Guiraud, Chateau Climens and on my first Father’s day Yquem !
    Yquem and a foie gras poele…Mmmmmm !
p.s. I visited the bordeaux region last year and had a Tasting (primeurs) of Cos at 9h30 am….Guiraud also at the same time the next day was a lot easier…

QOTD: I’ve never has a Sauteres. but concidering ive only been getting into wine hard core since i started watching the show ill will be tring to find this at some point. The closest thing ive had to something like this would be an ice wine and i love the cab franc ice wine its soooo good i must say

Oh hands down 1975 Rieussec, year I was married. Haven’t had one since December 2005, only have 3 left, should make it to 2015.

I love this show. This is classic GV. Thanks Gary.

QOTD: I have a tough time with really sweet things. I haven’t had a Sauterne, but I’ll try and seek this one out.

I sprung for 2 bottles of the 05 Cos. I’ve been good at not getting 1 or 2 more and have instead been seeking out the 04s. You’re not helping matters Gary. :)

I have only had a few decent Sauternes. I think that since most Sauternes are bottled in clear bottles, this can hurt the aging process on the shelf, and though these wines tend to be taken care of on the retail side, you cannot control the travel process up until then, look for color changes. I have found that these wines brown fast when over exposed to light. Much like an apple or pear. During my 6 year stint working for a wine distributor I was privileged to taste an 1983 d’Yquem. I dont know how it is tasting now, but it totally blew my skirt up at the time. After only being able to find pseudo affordable, cloying, and sugar saturated Sauternes, this 83 was an incredible treat. I can’t wait to seek out the Doisy and see what it has to offer today, and later.

    Cheers!

Sauternes are still underdiscovered. They change like crazy over the years in smell & taste–same vintage/same bottle. Best after 10 years of age as the sweetness lessens & the color gets orange. You can open these, pump them up & redrink a month or two later from the fridge & it still will be fine. Robert Parker does not like to barrel taste these & give specific ratings due to change in character/sweetness that occurs after bottling. These wines will get there time in the sun eventually as I believe that Port will make a huge comeback once people discover the value/price/performance ratio there.

    Hi Gary,

    2 wines, 197 points… WOW… but that is what they are…

anyway, fave. I had a 375 ml d’ Yquem back in 98 (the 82) and it was sensational, hard to describe the wine…

anyway, hope you get back safe, enjoying your neck of the woods this week. Please tell people to go see Bottle Shock which opened tonight here!!

    thanks,

What is it with the French and tables??? Why can’t they build one that’s stable??? I thought those bottles were going over several times during the episode!

    Great Show Gary,

I have not had a Sauternes.

    Great Show!!!

QOTD: Favorite is probably the 2003 Chateau Clos Haut-Peyraguey 1er Cru Sauternes. I’m a huge sauternes fan and for the price the Clos Haut-Peyraguey is pretty damn decent.

I think I may have left the first comment a while back predicting Favre would be a Jet. I was born in Wisconsin and a long time Packer fan and a thunderhead as well. I think it is only appropriate that I get tickets to a Jet game and we go — any interest? Which game?

    GV,

I can’t wait to see your reaction on Thursday’s show… What the heck is up with the Jets and Favre?! Your white knight Clemens seems to have been thrown into the backseat? What’s up with that? Do the Jets really think the old man can bring them the ring this year? Hope you aren’t in a corner secretly wearing a cheese hat this morning… If you are, hope you have a great wine with it as always!;)

Speaking of the book, my favorite quote is from a footnote for wine #46. “The poop of herbivores is milder than that of carnivores, but should still be considered inedible.” Boy, there’s no tellin’ what trouble we poor, dumb Vayniacs might get into if we didn’t have Gary to advise us.

What everyone is forgetting, that “old man” led the packers to the playoffs last year. Also to multiple superbowls. He still sprains and breaks fingers in training camp if he doesn’t control his velocity on the throw. Say what you want, but Farve going to the jets is a good move. Maybe the Jets will have a decent season now.

Your passion was evident in this show. I just wish these wines were more affordable. Oh well, just my luck.

Let’s hope, for you GV, that the J-E-T-S have to give up their first round draft pick next year. You know what that means!

QOTD: I keep putting off trying a Sauternes. I guess I’ll have to breakdown and buy one.

  138. August 7, 2008

Great show. I’ve had some really nice Sauternes, but only at tastings, and am looking forward to enjoying them at the end of a meal soon.

But I had to come back and leave a comment after reading about Farve coming to the Jets! Its a shame you’re away, but I immediately thought of you, screaming at some Indian bartender to switch the channel from cricket to football coverage. Good luck.

Very nice show Gary, I’m dying to have both of these wines now..

great show gary. you can’t beat a show with ultra great wines. i get all excited when i see bottles like cos, latour… etc on your table when i click on.
i almost bought the 05 cos, and now it is off the charts in price + i have a bottle of 2000 that i got for 1/2 of what the 05 is.
QOTD, even in france, people are nervous of sauternes. the french like balance in everything and sauternes for them is too sweet. not everyone, but a lot of them.
i spent a week in barsac last summer and got to taste quite a bit. it was hard to get appts at chateaux. anyhow, my favorite was a 95 coutet with some fois gras…..damn! i have a few bottles in my cellar of other stuff. sooo good… not for everyday though

Change of atmosphere is really wonderful! I will probably never set foot in Chateau Doisy Vedrines, especially whatever room you’re in when you shot this, but seeing you there is the next best thing to being there. Thanks for being a wine show and travel channel all in one!
    Great show, as always.

    Karl B.

    Hi Gary,

looking forward to the Thunder Cruise where I will be with my wife (celebrating our 25th Anniversary, her 50th Birthday, end of college tuition, and more!).

I like Sauterne a little bit, but for pure QPR Thunder, I will virtually always opt for Jurancon Moelleux. These sweet whites can be had for under $20 and are delicious. As you know, they are from Aquitaine which is a little south and east of the Sauterne region, but are terrific. I have purchased some Jurancon dry whites from Wine Library, but never seen the sweet varietal. Give them a shot.

    Love the show.

    Regards,
    Karl B.

I’m almost embarrassed to say that I’ve never had a Sauterne. The prices have always steered me away. I think I’ll start looking at some 375’s though. I hear they’re perfect.

Long time lurker lured out of the shadows here, not by the wine but just to say how much I am looking forward to a real-time recorded episode with Gary’s reaction to Favre’s arrival in NY. Gary, buddy, love the wine but when the press is throwing around comments like “biggest star since Namath” or “their most iconic player since the days of Joe Namath” – this is more important than wine… at least for today.

    Great show.
I just purchased both some of the ‘05 as well as some of the ‘07 futures of vedrines (even though the dollar will probably have rebounded by the time it comes to market). I also bought some of the ‘07 Doisy Daene since it was the year my daughter was born and it will be fun to have some of these for her 21st birthday, graduation, wedding day, etc.

    QOTD:
I actually had the best Sauternes of my life just last month after dinner at Cryus in Healdsburg: a glass of the 2002 d’Yquem. I don’t even have the words for it. I’ve had some great sauternes but never a d’yquem. Now I know what the big deal is: it has no peer.

  179. August 8, 2008

I had a dessert wine from Cadillac as one of my wine flights with a meal once. Cadillac is a Bordeaux apellation so, though not technically a Sautern it was probably made with Botrysized Semillion as well. It was quite good not that I was at my peak wine judging prowess having not spit all my previous wine flights. No regrets for that.
Cadillac wines main image problem might be that they sound like something someone might drink after running out of 40’s. I usually go for the bourbon when that happens to me.
FYI the Marquis de Cadillac financed the French expedition that set up the strategic forts over-looking “the straights” (la Detroit in French) between the 2 great lakes and was later immortilised for this by having a gaudy car named for him. Ironic, since he was known to be fond of dressing in cargo pants, flip flops and a black Rush concert T-shirt…yes they have been around that long.

The 2003 Chateau Rieussec was really delicious. I hope I can find a bottle of the 2005 Doisy Vedrines here in Hawaii–doubtful though. That’s the bummer…no one can ship wines to this state!

QOTD – No joking around, the 1847 Ch. d’Yquem. A once-in-a-lifetime dinner held in Nashville for one of the USA’s most influential collectors. Black as tar and the viscosity of old motor oil. A liquified version of the greatest creme brulee you can imagine. Delicious.

As far as dessert wines go, let’s not forget the great icewines of Germany and Canada, the beernauslese Rieslings of Germany, and the Baume d’vines of France, and the Vino Santo of Italy (sorry about the spelling). that doesn’t touch al the great red dessert wine or sherry which is it’s own class.

THE INTERNET’S MOST PASSIONATE JETS FAN…Gary V! Week two…wait for it, we won’t need a secondary because Favre won’t have three seconds to sling one up with Seymour and Warren bearing down from the outside and MAYO smashing though the middle! The Pats a) are awful human beings and b) get the job done!

QOTD: Never have tried them, but hopefully will soon!

    Another great episode!!!

QOTD – I have only had a few Sauternes and do not remember the names. I do have a bottle of 1998 Chateau LaTour Blanche that I brought back from Bordeaux last year. Hopefully it will be wonderful.

I have never had any Saurternes but I have had other dessert wines. I just bought a half bottle of the 05 Doisy Vedrines and can’t wait to try it. Unfortunately they didn’t have any full bottles.

I have had only a few Sauternes and I don’t remember the names.
I do have the 2001 Riussec (sp?) in my cellar.

I am a big fan of Cos D’Estournel. I have has the 1989 and it is spectacular. As you mentioned, it as become pricey.

I have had several dessert wines although I prefer a great port for after dinner. As far as Sauternes goes, La Tour Blanche and Chateau Rieussec. Although for $10 bones anyone at my house that tastes this for after dinner just raves about it….Michele Chiarlo Moscato d’Asti Nivole

QOTD: Gary, I have to admit to you…I was bitten in a bad way by Sauternes. The one bottle that I sprung for 2 years ago was either corked, or rotten in a bad way. It was like drinking light honey with stinging mildew in your mouth. It will take quite a bit for me to spring for it again, but who knows…

QOTD: while I’ve had D’yquem(and it was a youngin) my favorite sauternes was the 88 Rieussec. It was just that “aha” moment as I saw why people age these bad boys for sooooo long. Just the roundedness feel that it brought and all of the wonderful complex flavors was just a thing of beauty. Of course, about 14 hours later I was able to taste a 71 Guiraud and that woke my senses up even more as to the power of truly aged sauternes. Those two wines, though I personally scored the D’yquem higher, were serious waking up wines for me and it was a pure pleasure to drink them

QOTD: Have not yet dabbled in Sauternes simply because I’m not one for sweet wines, and rarely do dessert wines. Will, however, make a point of trying one at some point.

Now on to business – Your Jets have inherited my hometown (or home state) team’s QB, and I think this is an okay thing. Should make for a dynamic year for football. Heck, the Jets may even win a few this year if they can keep that wild hillbilly Favre in check and offer his old bones some protection on the line! Good luck this season, Mr. V! It’ll be wild.

QOTD: Jordan, The Riviere Russe, 1983 – a sauterne style dessert wine
I can seldom make it to a dessert wine – can’t drink that much alcohol – except at wine dinners where I just sip.

1990 Ch. Suidaraut. I have been drinking a case of splits of this wine for over 15 years now (3 1/2 bottles left). I have seen it evolve from primarily fruity, apricot flavors to now more intense caramel flavors. The evolution is fascinating! Also a plug for 1983 d’Yquem sticky and amazing.

Question OTD: I’ve had one at a diner party but have forgotten the producer. T’was very good though.

Quote OTD: “99-point effort” wow. 99 pts. ridonculous.

QOTD: Easy. 1989 Rieussec, hands down. I’d tried other Sauternes before, even d’Yquem (1980), but this stuff blew my mind. The balance of acid, botrytis, and length is truly profound. Gary, if you’ve never tried it, please do, and you’re welcome for the suggestion! :) It beat Doisy 1988, Lafaurie -Peyraguey 1986, Guiraud 1989, and Coutet 1990.

QOTD: favourite Sauternes?? I’ve drunk quite a few, but of particular note. Too be honest nothing compares with De Bortoli Noble One from Australia … (especially for value for money).

Wow. Big times wines there Gary. Im lucky enough to have a bottle of the 05 Estrounel stashed away, and now that you had to throw that 1G number at me, Im not so sure Im going to drink it! Sell sell sell! ….nah, ill probably pop it some day. Wouldnt mind trying to grab that sauternes as well. I already own 3 05’s so I hope they rock it as well. QOTD: Ive had two in restaurants, but I cant remember their names. Both rocked. One 1998 Piere d’ Arche I bought at the store but I think it was corked when I tasted it. I dont know for sure but it was just off.

Haven’t had a chance to try a Doisy-Vedrines, which, btw, is technically a Barsac, not a Sautern.

But I have had 2003 Riussac and 2003 Lafaurie-Peyraguey, both grand, with the Riussac having the better acidity.

Just watched this episode and then checked if you can get de Doisy here in Sweden. well Yes you can if you hurru. There are 4 halfbottles left and they cost 22 bones each. How do I know that. Well we have a state monopoly (Systembolaget) and they have an online database.

Nice show. BTW Château Cos d’Estournel 2005 goes for 235 bones and there are 32 bottles available. You can only buy them in stores, not online
