I’m so jacked you’re doing Lambics! I have a couple of each of those Cantillons waiting for me in my closet.

Loved the show.. I’ve never tried any Lambics, but I will seek them out and try them. It was funny to watch GV eat bacon in the Vegan.com shirt!

    QOTD: Yeah man, very knowledgeable!

Love the beer episodes the earlier show was the 1st thunder show I ever watched. I also thought a bacon eating vegan was funny.

    QOTD: great job, great show

I’m feeling like Mac may be nudging for a show of his own. I’d watch it…as long as there was no more finger wagging.

Alec and Gary: polar opposites. I’d love to see Alec do his own show every once in awhile, at least. Alec, REALLY has something going on.

Nice job! Gotta love a little beer. I have had the Lindemans, a few of them at that, the cherry, raspberry, peach, and a few others. They are pretty good, the cherry is definatly a Ludens cough drop.

LOVE IT! Just as soon as this baby is born I’m going to drink some beer I’ve been wanting one since I found out I was pregnant … I’ll try some of these. Very fun show. I’ve been looking forward to another beer show. Alec = Very cool.

Rad show today. I like the lambics. Here in Wisconsin we have a good one from New Glarus Brewery called “The Belgian Red.” But you can only get it in Wisconsin so ha ha ha Alec!

All hail to the ale! I personally love ale, beer, the sweet cereal brew. Very good show!

I think Alek did great. Gary should learn to be quite sometimes (no offence) Beer shows are a good side-track. Entertaining and enticing…Mmmm…beer.

    Dominus

A very informative and off-the-beat show. I really liked it but was surprised it took you so long to ask about that sweater! Wow

QOTD: You did a great job Alec though given your confidence, you knew that. :)

I’ll give you a 90+ score! I need to try and find any of those beers.

To quote a recent reluctant black super hero, “Good job… good job”. (Said awkwardly with thumb up.) Alec, you are Beer Nerd Number One. Bring it on anytime. High alcohol beers episode?

I had a Cantillon before and the bottle was similar to the second one but I don’t think it had fruit in it- smelled nice and poopy. In fact, the enthusiastic recommendation from my friend was “if you’re into poopy you’ll love this beer…” Spot on- I love poopy and I liked the beer but what kind of recommendation was that? ;-) I’ll have to get it again and retaste to make sure. Because I need an excuse to drink, right?

  29. August 14, 2008

    The Aesthetic Elevator

Mmmmm, lambic. Good stuff! Only brand I’ve ever seen to buy around here is the Lindeman’s.

  30. August 14, 2008

    JonE

Cantillon make’s fantastic stuff, really skilled beer masters.

QOTD: Love the beer shows, one mistake. The lindeman’s. Don’t put that panty dropper bs sugar bomb on a real show and pretend its anything more than syrup. That’d be like giving Arbor Mist to Parker. If you want to show a sweet to semi-sweet framboise use Liefmans Frambozen or any other of the well made non-Jolly Rancher lambics out there.

Other than that-good show, and I am very envious of the St. Lamvinus.

IT IS GREAT TO GO OVER BEERS AS I HAVE MORE EXPERIENCE WITH BEER THAN WINE AND I THINK THE WINE DRINKERS WILL GET ALONG WITH THE BEER DRINKERS EVEN IF THEY DON’T DRINK BEER BUT UNDERSTAND AND ARE KNOWLEDGEABLE ABOUT BEER.

  37. August 14, 2008

    John Farrin

QOTD: You’re doing fine but my body can barely afford the wine I drink. Beer would totally explode me.

Great show! Eating bacon wearing Vegan.com shirt–I love it!

  39. August 14, 2008

Gary, this episode is one of my favorites in recent history for the mere fact that you wore a Vegan.com shirt on the one day you brought meat! I love it!

Great show! I live in N. Cal and had never heard of Russian River so much props for the advice. I loooooved hitting the belgian guezes when in Paris last and have been uber frustrated that they are so hard to find! Keep the beer episode coming!

  41. August 14, 2008

    Peter

Great show! More beer shows please. Alec, I can feel the passion and knowledge. Keep it up! I agree, Lambics and cheese are an amazing combo. In fact, a lot of beer and cheese pair up well.

Nice episode, like the diversity, I like good unique beers so this was nice.

QOTD: You are doing well. People under-estimate how hard doing a good show is and you are quite natural.

Awwww…’Argyle Alec’ was cute. I’m not a beer gal, but I found the episode very interesting, guys. Thanks. QOD: You’re doin’ great, Alec!

Doin Great Alec. You helped me find some wines at WL during the Christmas holidays. Had I known you were a beer expert I would have asked for some recommendations. Love the french cuffs. Enjoyed the beer episode also.

QOTD: Did a great job, Alec. Gary, seems like you were ragging on him a little much. Are we ever going to see Lizzie??? My hubby and I are really into wine together, and it would be interesting to see how your wife does her wine thing. Just a thought…

  48. August 14, 2008

    Yvette W

Wow, what a great show! Learned so much. You should have Alec on the show more often! Mmmmm, I’m gonna try to pick up the Lindeman’s Framboise for this weekend!

QOTD: You are amazing Alec! Great show – why not think about a BeerLibrary spin off ;)

  49. August 14, 2008

    Matt W

Stupendous Gary and Alec! Always refreshing to change it up now and again. An inquisitive and informative show and makes me want to try some new beverages.

QOTD: A very solid effort; you complement Gary nicely and add a touch of class and restraint that Gary must forgo in lieu of ratings (but we all forgive him). A solid 90+

  50. August 15, 2008

    Robin C

QOTD: 96 plus. I never heard of lambic beers. I never would have even imagined that such a thing existed. I feel less provincial now. Do they have them at micro breweries?

  51. August 15, 2008

    manonthemoon

Nice show. Not really down with the lambics though.

QOTD: you did great, next we need a show on imperial russian stout or wee heavy ales.

QOTD: You must have been good – Gary hardly spoke!

Absolutely phenomenal episode. Awesome job guys. Very informative.

QOTD Alec (Alex) sorry if i get it wrong… you rocked it. You need a beerlibrary spinoff indeed.

This is my first comment ever, and i got off (not literally) my lazy ass and am writing it JUST to say that Alex, you are doing an awesome job and i want to see MOAR! :D

    Kristen

QOTD: Alec, you rocked it! Opened my eyes to Lambic beers, something I’ve never heard of before but am going to have to try. I’m definitely going to have to stop in to the Russian River area in the next few weeks to see if I can grab some of that supplication one. I guess that’s one of the perks of living in the bay area of California =)

    Thanks Gary and Alec!!

  58. August 15, 2008

Cool beer episode. Can’t say I’m down with much fruit in the beer. Also not much of a wheat beer fan but everything in life deserves at least one try.
    QOTD: I dug the science.

QOTD: I’m loving the random non wine shows.

Never had a lambic, but I will definitely seek them out.

I get the Rauchbock at Triumph Brewing Co everytime they have it – It’s definitely one of my favorite! I’ve got other friends who dig the bacon as well :)

  61. August 15, 2008

    Withnail

    QOTD: Great job Alec!
Not a beer drinker but enjoyed the show.
Gary came across a bit buzzed (but in a good way – he was loose).

  62. August 15, 2008

    Rajiv

QOTD: Awesome!!!! You’re doing great, and I’d like to see you on more!

Alec: I had the lindemans Cassis lambic, and underneath the sweet, fruitiness was a real bad stink – we’re talking latrine here. Is there some bacterial contamination? What might have been going on?

Thanks for the tip about the Rauchbier. While I haven’t found one yet, I’ve found some Rauchbock, and I love it.

  63. August 15, 2008

@QOTD: Alec was doing really fine, but I’d love to see Mott dancing! ;)

A Lambic show on WLTV! that rocks! Russian River Brewing is about an hour away from me. I actually met the brewmaster once. He was pretty neat. He was at an event at Toronado, a great beer bar in SF.
I like lambics, though while I enjoy it sometimes, I think Lindemans goes overboard with the sweetness sometimes. You should try a Cantillion Rose de Gambrius. That’s funky beer!

  65. August 15, 2008

    Scott

Love the Beer Shows! You need to do more of these and you should sell some high end beer at wine library. Lots of cross over appeal with many craft brews, especially the Belgians. I hope to see you do a show on Saisons. Many of them are quite similar to Lambics, using heavy doses of Brett and wild yeasts. They tend not to be quite as esoteric, but are no less complex. They also cost much less. Darbyste is a very interesting one which is fermented with Fig Juice, but doens’t have so much as a hint of sweetness. The Saisons of Fantome are as complex as any wine I have ever had showing sharp barnyard aromas and tart fruit flavors. I shared a couple bottles with some friends a few weeks ago and we nearly came to blows with each other arguing over what fruits we were tasting in this beer! Fantome doesn’t make fruit beers, it is all in the yeast(s)! Again, great show and Alec was awesome!

  66. August 15, 2008

    Ben

Gary love the show, I’m a big beer nut, so this was awesome. BTW I was catching up on a few episodes and watching one you did on Bordeaux, and I have a show idea. I’ve heard John C. Dvorak from Twit talk about having a lot of vintage Burgundy and Bordeaux; I think it would be awesome to do a show with him where you guys try good old world wines. It would be cool, and it might open wine library up to a wider audience if you got a Twit nod as well.

    Ben

  67. August 15, 2008

I found it hilarious that Gary’s wearing a vegan shirt that someone obviously sent to him, and is eating bacon in this episode. Haha.

  68. August 15, 2008

    YoungDave

QOTD: Great show, Big G. I gotta say that Argyle Alec knows his stuff and I appreciate it, even if he is quite the beer geek. The show need Gary’s laid-back personality and charisma to keep it thoroughly enjoyable. Solid episode, and I love the guest format and Alec introducing Gary to some new info about a beverage that isn’t as familiar to him as the usual suspect of vino.

  69. August 15, 2008

    Valos

Great episode. I’m a big beer fan, and I really like lambics, so it’s great to see it get some attention. Alec did great, and I hope to see more of him. Would love to see an episode on Belgian Dark Ales (I definitely recommend Maudite, Trois Pistoles, and Gulden Draak). Thanks guys.

ALEC: goood work and gary–so cool and chill today, really liked it. Aleic, what do you think of Flemish ales? Duchess de Bourgogne? Reinardt?(sp?) etc

Love these beers with food, especially smokeed brisket. what are your thoughts?

Hi, this lurker finally comments. Great show as always. I thought Alec did really good in describing the beers and Gary too of course. Now a little extra info. Maybe it has already been said, but I am too lazy too read all the comments through. First off, the gueuze. There is a little description on the English wikipedia page on the origin of the name, but I think there is more truth in the dutch/Flemish one. One of the exlanations is that it actually originates from the street name where this kind of lambic was first brewed (Geuze street) in Brussels. Afterwards it spread out to different regions. I think you guys also wondered which grapes were used in the St Lamvinus. There’s merlots and cabernet-francs. And I also can’t resist on commenting on the framboise lambic from Lindemans. I think Alec mentioned that this was the beer you could let your girlfriend drink. I was honestly laughing out loud when he said that, because especially the “kriek” (as we call these kinds of beer in Belgium) from Lindemans is “The girl bier” because it’s so sweet. I would dare to say that Lindemans in general is pretty commercial in Belgium. There is always a kind of “battle” between them and Belle Vue (owned by Inbev) for who is the better and the “true” kriek. Other then them, there are a bunch of other brewers who make kriek, but they are smaller and thus less known.

Hope this is not too much to read.

QOTD: Argyle Alec, you did a great job, you have your own web tv carisma and I think you should start BLTV, then you and Gary could do crossover eps like this one, and Gary could be on your show! The two of you have good report.

Gary: I think that a show like this does well reinforcing your philosophy. Trying new things, trusting your pal etc. Why should wine drinkers be limited to wine? Thanks, it was a good ep.

  75. August 15, 2008

    Pardus

My wife got back from Belgium last night and then tells me, “We were in a beer store, but I didn’t know what to get you.” I was crushed as I love, love, love, Belgian beer. Lambics are great, but I really go for the Trappist beers. Trois-Monts (from France I know but still a Flanders style beer) is also great

  76. August 15, 2008

    JMac

Great show. I have been looking out for something like this for the past 100 shows or so. It is the first episode I can actually use in my everyday life as none of my friends drink wine (but I am trying to expand my horizons). Next time I am with my co-workers I will definitely be mentioning trying Lambric beer either at the next lunch or bringing some to the next barbeque.

  77. August 15, 2008

QOTD: great show, your doing good! never had a lambic, but ill keep my eye out to try one!

  78. August 15, 2008

A and G – Good stuff, Lambics are the best beers, age-worthy and complex. Alec did pretty well, knows his stuff. But needs to start pronouncing Gueuze like the Belgiums: “Gerrr-zzz” :)

Argyle McLovin! Great show. Enjoyed it from Ustream as well…

QOTD: You’re doing great Alec. You seem to be comfortable in front of the camera and you do a great job as a foil for Gary. Keep it up! 93 points.

  83. August 15, 2008

QOTD: Good job Alec, way to bring lots of knowledge to balance out Gary’s bacon & cheese chowdown.

Great show. I found reading the information on the websites that were linked-up (by Mott, of course), was very helpful in following the show. I knew nothing about Lambic beer and its very interesting, I will try it — if I can find it.

  87. August 15, 2008

I have a trip to Belgium and The Netherlands planned in 2009 and have 2 days in the Pajottenland area scheduled because I friggin LOVE lambic… Seriously, thanks for rockin’ this episode.

QOTD: Alec, you rock. But a word of advice… those who enjoy the greatest job security typically don’t publicly play the roll of “Gregor Mendel” to their boss’s “Gary, the kid who ate glue in science class”.

  90. August 15, 2008

    brainpain

Great Show! QOTD: Between Alec talking about pot and his terrific “we are always looking for good head” remark … I would have to rate you a 98, which is surprisingly what I normally rate bacon! Great stuff!

  91. August 15, 2008

    Taylor

QOTD Doing a great job, Alec. Loving the beer shows as well. What did the cheese get rated?

  92. August 15, 2008

    Rowland

I noticed you didn’t spit much of that beer Gary! And finally you give Mott a glass! Finally. ok and Alec, that sweater vest is not bringing any class or style, you look like peter parker before he got bit by the spider. Try some Van Heusen or Ben Sherman button ups, and leave the wool in the closet till its actually cold (which i doubt it ever is in that super temp controlled building).
    keep rockin

What’s this! An episode about the finer products of my home country? A very good idea, and I hope to see several more episodes like this, we got quite a few more beers I think you guys would like.

Like a “la chouffe” and a “westvleteren” but also a plain and simple Duvel.

Alec: you were doing great, we could tell you know your stuff and are really passionate about beer! (p.s. if you can’t read the label, mail me a photo and i’ll translate it for you, it’ll either be in french or in dutch)

QOTD: He brought a touch of class to a beer show, informative.

I prefer Wine with Gary’s style. I think he offended Catholics,
Vegans, and people that eat cheese not with there knife.

Tounge and cheeeek!! lub yu Gary

Oh, man I love sour beers, especially the ones from Russian River (I’m so lucky to get nearly everything that they make). Hard to beat a good sour beer with some piquant blue cheese and some soft goat’s milk cheese. Mmm.

  103. August 15, 2008

    Rick O'Shea

Good job Alec. I’ve never even heard of lambic beer but I will get one soon.

QOTD: Very nice job! I smell a spin-off show.

Triple Cream cheese is amazing btw.

Just because someone is interested in wine.
    And in learning about wine.
Doesn’t mean they are interested in shows about
    any kind of beverage.
I mean why don’t we have a show on energy drinks next.

  106. August 15, 2008

    Mark

Yeah I caught the new store name dropped today. I went to the gourmetlibrary.com website and it’s still being built…..But I can see Gary now also tasting and ranking cheeses, exotic meats, etc, etc lol

  107. August 15, 2008

QOTD: Doing great Alec. Lambics are new to me but sound like they would fit my palate nicely.

  108. August 15, 2008

    Ricky D

QOTD: Great job Alec. Gotta find the Russian River brew.

I was formerly a huge beer guy, Homebrewer, BJCP certified beer judge, etc, now gravitating more to wine. Cantillon is my favorite Belgian brewer, Payottenland beers rock the house. There are so many interpretations of Belgian beer styles, no two taste alike, unlike American Budmilloors. Wouldn’t mind seeing other beer shows, but maybe that needs to be on Beer Library TV.

I loved the bacon eating vegan. You’re giving me ideas. Now I want to get a vegan shirt I can wear in public while doing the carnivore thing.

That was fun – will look to try some beers like that (didn’t like a gueuze I’d had before). Would love to see a trappist show next time…

Great Job, liked the show, have always been a Lambic fan!

    lurking lurker

So, I liked this episode. Beer is good. But the craziness of it made me feel like I was trapped on a boat-ride in Wonka World. In this episode, we had Gary rate bacon a 98 WHILE wearing a vegan.com shirt, ask about smoking illegal drugs and the guest called himself a “big german nut”? First of all, I didn’t even know their was such a thing, and second of all, awesome.

  113. August 15, 2008

    Scandalous Candice

Epic Fail. You don’t spit beer to taste it like wine. We give wine respect when drinking it and exploring it. It would be nice if wine geeks could do the same for beer. How hard it would be to bulk a tiny bit on some beer knowledge like tasting and how to pour before you do it on some lame pod cast? Instead they treat it like a new lame trend that they were first to discover it. FAIL.

And they way he grabbed the Supplication and just poured it out like maniac. This guy should lay off the speed and leave the beer alone until he is ready to appreciate what he has in front of him.

What a shameful waste of Cantillon and Supplication.

Also while it might be fun to have a plate a bacon around while you taste, talk about killing your palate and not being about to get in to the complexities of the beer. Wait until you taste the beer then eat. And make sure you taste the range.

  114. August 15, 2008

    Murso

That was fun! Alec, your “doin’ fine”, your enthusiasm shows to the point of endearing geekiness, and I do the same thing at times with wine. It is evident that the store is with confident, knowing, and customer friendly hands at the helm (despite the hilarious comment on GV eating glue in science, he too, rulez, in his own masterfully demented way.). One problem, though… No cheese, Alec? None? REALLY? One can only pity a soul such as you, who surely must have done something terrible in a previous existance to demerit such a curse. For that , you deserve an extra drink. Of Geuze. G’head, you can have my share. In over 16 years in the industry, I’d assess that very few can enjoy the sour splendor of the Brett monster, as applied here. The numbers don’t lie. It’s def. a beer geek thing, but that’s cool…No accounting for taste, mine inclusive, just as GV professes. I am, however, impressed with Unibroue’s Ephemere (White ale w/ Granny Smith, and zero sweetness, though it’s not a true lambic. I understand their brewer came from Chimay.

So glad to see you do a show about beer! Although you have some beer lovers cringing for spitting out and rinsing glasses with such great beers. Why don’t you use different glasses for trying each new wine/beer?

  121. August 15, 2008

    Paul V

QOTD: I’d give the show today a 91+.
The Initial attack was not quite as strong as I was hoping, but it was made up for with the wonderful midshow transition – bacon on cheese notes which is unique and quite awesome. Hilarious notes of “If my wife doesn’t put lemons…” followed closely with a “I’m really sorry… ” notes which I found hilarious. Nice long smooth finish into the QOTD which I always appreciate. fantastic bacon and cheese notes. Nice dual-host complexity.

The wearing of a vegan t-shirt while consuming the dead pig parts….. oh, I mean “bacon” – Very tacky. Very sad. It illustrates clearly how threatened Gary Vaynerchuk and his side-kick are to any enlightened ideology or compassionate dietary choices. I still say – Go Vegan

QOTD: I liked Alec. He appears knowledgable and snappily dressed.

Haters on the lambics, relax please. The man puts out a ton a content. I think you can find something in the oh, five hundred other available shows.

    Great work as always.

Beer. I like Miller Lite. I’m obviously a connoisseur. I wouldn’t drink any beverage that intentionally has Brett in it. Stop hating on us Pats fans, we can’t help that Coach used to film people, we didn’t authorize that, and he doesn’t do that any more. No one’s perfect. Are you perfect? And we’re going to kick the Jets’ asses this season! Esp. that old fart Favre. Prepare to go down big time! In flames!

I’ll have to try some Gueuez some time. I had a beer from Lindeman’s once and it was alright, but I think I would like that style without the fruit a lot more.

    B-Melt

A quote from a post if you please: “Very tacky. Very sad. It illustrates clearly how threatened Gary Vaynerchuk and his side-kick are to any enlightened ideology or compassionate dietary choices.”

    What?

Another: “I mean why don’t we have a show on energy drinks next.”

    Huh?

And yet another: “And they way he grabbed the Supplication and just poured it out like maniac. This guy should lay off the speed and leave the beer alone until he is ready to appreciate what he has in front of him. What a shameful waste of Cantillon and Supplication.”

    Get over yourself.

Wow. Did someone slip some poop into everyone’s Frosted Flakes this morning? Good lord people. Lighten up already its just beer. And its just wine. And its just a 15 minute video-blog online. We have fun here if you hadn’t guessed, its educational entertainment. Its about appreciating life.

QOTD: Alec. Cool beans yo. I like the bit of nerd you bring to Gary’s straight thundah. And by Nerd, I mean Argyle sweater-vests.

I’m formally a huge beer drinker, my first Lindeman’s was circa 2001-ish, I believe, and back then it rocked my face off. Never had the gueuze before, I’ll hunt it down when I get the chance. Thanks though, now I’m going to have to go out and throw a few dimes down on some brew tonight.

I love the lambic show, it is my favorite style of beer, even though the only lambic from your show that I’ve had is the Lindemans Framboise, but it consistently rocks my world (whether in a bottle or on tap).

QOTD: I love changing the beer world, you’re doing a great job with the beer ideas.

Fantastic show!!! Alec seems very knowledgable and has a great sense of humor. Learned a ton about these beers, as I’ve never had a lambic.

We need more of him; every 1-2 mos!! How about a contest to find a nickname for him!! ex. Mottster, Vayniaks etc.

    Than wristbands and t-shirts!!

  136. August 17, 2008

    Dan-o

I enjoyed the show due to the variety.
    I always like guests.
I am not a big fan of beer, but I am always wiling to learn.

QOTD – You are doing fine. Could use a little less argyle, but your knowledge offset the attire.

  137. August 17, 2008

    E-Dub

QOTD: Trying just a bit too hard. Gary is naturally pumped and focused about wine. Argyle Alec (Dub-A would be my nickname suggestion), was forcing it a bit.

As far as content, the only lambic I’ve ever had was a framboise that my wife ordered when we were in college. I told her if I wanted fruit in my beer… well fill in the rest with anything negative that fits.

Actually, now that I’m on to wine and tasting anything that can be put in a glass or on a plate, I’d probably appreciate it more.

  138. August 17, 2008

    Koenraad

    Great ep.

‘Flemish’ is not a language though, here in Flanders we speak Dutch, which is 95% similar to the Dutch language spoken in the Netherlands.

Lambic is from an area called ‘Pajottenland’, not (only) from the town of ‘Lambic’.

Alway nice to learn about other countries, so try harder next time :)

The beer guy brought the bacon…how the hell was gary supposed plan out “im going to wear a vegan shirt durring this episode because im eating bacon” right before the day’s episode? Thats right, he didnt plan this, he didnt mean to attack anyone’s views or opinions, It was just a coincidense.

Sorry everyone, now I got that out of my system great show gary loved the lambic beers.

I just tried the Lindeman’s Framboise. It really does taste like cough drops. The novelty of that wears off very quickly. It’s not something I ever need to try again.

  162. August 24, 2008

    Neil D

I’ve been waiting for a lambic episode for ages, and I think I might have recommended you try some lambics when I commented on the last beerlibrary episode.

QOTD: Alec, doin good, I like how you pound the glass of beer that Gary pours you.

I LOVE GUEUZE, Cantillon is one of my favorites. Maybe one of these days we can get Gary to try an Oude Kriek (the sour one, not one with all the sugar, like Lindeman’s and Liefmans)

  163. August 24, 2008

    Sean

WOW, i just gotta say WOW. Went out and got my first Lambic last night, the Framboise was the only one they had. Holy FRUIT BOMB, wasnt expecting that much fruit. Its awesome though, definitely something for after dinner, im hooked.

Just as Eva en Koenraad (fellow comment writers) I’m Belgian and for us lambic beers are a lot more common of course.
But I wouldn’t say the Russian River brew is lambic, for it is NOT beer which has fermented spontaneously. It is actually closer to a typical Belgian red ale, which is also a very sour beer : Rodenbach.

This type fermentation for beer (which is limited to Pajottenland and Brussels) is similar to the way Roquefort blue cheese is made…so, no yeast is added, it’s all in the air! This makes a lambic ;gueuze and other lambic based beers (kriek, framboise…) are actually blends of different ages of lambic (hence the “méthode champenoise” and gueuze named the champagne of the beers). By the way, in Belgium we name gueuze and kriek/framboise for those blends which are bottled; the “primitive” non blended beer is “lambiek=lambic” for us : sweet lambic (very young), kriekenlambiek (the one used for kriek) for instance. I do not like gueuze but I enjoy the lambiek a lot, so the taste is really different.
Looking at the comments, it might have been wise to start by telling this in the programme.

As a number of other people said…Cantillon is one of the best true lambic brewers still active and they are in the centre of Brussels and can be visited. What’s really very attractive about cantillon is 1/ that they still use the classic recipies (i.e. adding fruit and not sirop to the beer being formed), and 2/ that they make a lot of “once only” brews for clients. A couple of years back, I went to Stockholm and Akkurat, a fameous beer bar there had had a batch of lambic made with typical swedish berries.
Lindemans is a commercial lambic maker and it is one of the first brewers who jumped onto the new trend (to make young people like beer again) : make the stuff very sweet! Definitely not done for real beer lovers.
So, please feel free to make a programme about trappist beers, or saison (to Scott : the only thing lambic and saison have in common apart from some ingredients is really the period of the year they are made in, namely winter!) or white beers or… but NO sweet fruit beers…that’s like making a programme about breezers!
I’m now living in Spain but twice a year I bring a car load of beer from Belgium…wonderful ;-) )!

QOTD: Keep it going man!…My fiance is in complete love with ALL of the Lindeman’s products…a bit too fruity for me but I definitely agree with you in that its a great beer for someone who isn’t a beer fan or much of a drinker. Great Ep!

  167. August 27, 2008

    JayZee

Good show, but I am not a big fan of lambics.

QOTD: I do like the BeerTV shows as long as they aren’t too frequent and Alec rocks it out!

  168. August 27, 2008

    ex-lurkdawg

Alec, I think you’re great on the show. Thanks for talking about Lambic beers so more people will know they’re not all sugary fruit. I’m also glad you mentioned Allagash Brewing. I’m biased because I live right near Portland, Maine, but they are my favorite brewery.

  169. August 28, 2008

    David

The show was a nice departure from the typical wine show. same energy and all that but a different perspective, more inquisitive on Garys part instead of the usual boat of confidence. (not that this is bad) Point is this, different fermentation methods and ranges of flavors and combinations present us with new experiences and take our head out of its usual place and perspective.

  170. August 28, 2008

Forgot to mention a Wisconsin producer, New Glarus brewery. Distribution generally in WI and neighboring states. They have a raspberry and a cherry that are a little more tart than the Lindemans offering. Both include a good amount of sediment in the bottle.

The power of suggestion, you actually made me open a beer (although the only one I had in the house was a Grolsch Oud Bruin, so at only 2.5% you could argue it isn’t really a beer).

    Gary, eating bacon & cheese & wearing a Vegan.com T? :D

Those beers sound exactly what I’d like…never had a Lambic beer before, I may have to look for one to try. Great show!

    QOTD – Alec, you were great….the shirt & tank-top combo not :)

Killer show. I have been a beer nut before beer was cool. Have has many lambics and enjoyed many. Actually have some of the Boone Marriage series from 15 years ago in the cellar. :)
Alex, you rocked it! You were very knowledgeable on the subject and did a fantastic job. BTW, also digged the way you slugged them back. Made Gary look like your shy date. lol

Shocking show to me. Im not a beer fan at all. Had a fair amount of the cheap US beers, also some well-known mircobrews amd not cared for a single one. Not even a little. These def. piqued my intrest. Hopefully my wine shop will have one! QOTD: You did a damn good job. Lots of knowledge there. Thanks!

  179. February 14, 2009

I love the antithesis these two guys bring, and how, in appearances alone, they are already breaking drinking stereo types. You’ve got the nerdy guy in an argyle sweater and a more intense, loud, fun lovin guy in a t-shirt and arm band. If I saw these guys for the first time, I would peg Alec as the wine guy and Gary as the beer nut.

GREAT example that quality drinking and knowledge is for everyone. Great job guys!

GARY, COME TO LILLE, FRANCE AND DO A TRAPPIST BEER SHOW WITH ME! (hint: I have two crates of Westvleteren Trappist beer, basically impossible to find outside of Belgium).
