Ah… I’ve been waiting for this episode since you did it on ustream. I’m all about the Moscato d’ Asti!!!

QOTD: Diet Code Red Mountain Dew… But if we’re talking bubbly wines, Moscato d’ Asti is it for me, man. They sell a bottle called Marco Negri at the local grocery. It’s inexpensive and it’s an awesome summer drink. I always know I’m in the wife’s good graces when she brings me home a bottle…

I’m all about beer when it comes to sparkling Beverages. Infact, I even like beer more than Champagne (even grower’s champagne), cava, moscato, prosecco, or any sparkling wine. Butttt, I definetly like red and white wine more than any beer.

Mott brings thunder to the Thunder show!

QOTD: Freixenet cava, Cordon Negro is lovely for eleven bones. I served some with a cucumber and yogurt soup with dill and mint the other night. It went over well.

good times. maybe should have been in june rather than late aug, but that is OK.
QOTD- this will have to fall under the champagne category. i don’t have a to of champagne experience, but i still measure everything against Bolongier NV. i had some last christmas and it did it for me. it had the richness that misses in a lot of mid level champers. after that, it would be a tie with jaqcueson 732 and larmandier – bernier vertus. both are different in style but the 732 has zip and the L-B has character. will seek out some italian bubbles

  32. August 19, 2008

QOTD – there’s a local pub/microbrewery called The Pumphouse, they make their own beer in the pub…their brewed root beer is amazing! Tastes the way root beer should, tons of liquorish and sassafras! So, Pumphouse Root Beer, hands down!

  36. August 19, 2008

QOTD… Got to be A&W Rootbeer in a frozen mug. As a youngster living near Napa CA. we would travel by unairconditioned car down highway 99 to the LA area to visit grandparents several times a year Mom and Dad would stop several times in small towns like Pixley or Delano and we would all have A&W rootbeer
So you are kinda liking the 2 min drill, check out some vintage Joe Montana classics he did it better than anyone.

qotd. I had my 1st moscato d’asti this year, and must say I preferred it to any other bubbly i’ve had. It was batasiolo.

  40. August 19, 2008

    Moselman

I also like Fresca for taste, but hadn’t thought of it as a bubbly. For sparkly, used to get a Velletri Rose in Ontario many moons ago. Can’t find it in the B.C. listings.

  41. August 19, 2008

    Paryb

    Great show G-Sauce!

QOTD: Gruet Methode Champenoise, Rose. It’s N/V but every year it’s damn nice stuff. Course I’m a sucker for New Mexico wine.

  42. August 19, 2008

    BobbyTiger

Interesting show. Never had the Moscato as I’m not really into sweet wines, but the Braida D’Asti looks like its worth a big try. (thanks Mott). QOTD- I’ve had just about every bubbly out there, and I keep coming back to Cooks Brute. Yeah, yeah, I know that sounds a tad bit stupid, but…………it is what it is.

  43. August 19, 2008

    brorjace

Orange flavored Moxie. I was devasted when our world market stopped carrying it, now I have to drink Orange Crush, which is not as good.

  47. August 19, 2008

    sam

I don’t know much about bubbles but I do enjoy Perrier mineral water especially after a hard night. I’ve had a Veuve Clicquot on New Years Eve for the first time. Good but expensive.

Does Muscato have any relation to Muscadet?

OR – a trappist beer – maybe verboden vrucht ??

  51. August 19, 2008

    Hido53

Great show Gary! Need to get some of the Braida!

QOTD: Most definitely have to go back to my childhood with this one. Specifically, the A&W rootbeer, draft version, bought in the restaurant poured directly into the icy cold glass mugs! Second most favorite would be the same rootbeer poured directly into the take-home containers (I can’t remember the shape or what they were made of . . . ) so we could enjoy them with our own glass mugs that we stored in the home freezer for just that reason!

  52. August 19, 2008

    Lynda S

QOTD: A Guinness poured correctly fresh off the tap.

  53. August 19, 2008

    Jim Miranda

My very favorite is champagne – Bollinger is the best I’ve tried.
I’ve noticed the price for Bollinger has increased alot more than any other champagne in the last few years. Why is that?

  54. August 19, 2008

    Withnail

QOTD: I had some Nicholas Feuillete house blend a few years back (brown bottle, unsmooth glass – sorta like diamonds or scales pattern) that knocked my socks off.

  55. August 19, 2008

    KVolk

QOTD: Hands down its a Root Beer float with Stewarts root beer……..

  56. August 19, 2008

    Nick A.

Gary, first things first, you’re the man. Secondly, do you ever think you could bring Bob Parker himself on your show to taste some thunder?

  57. August 19, 2008

    John Farrin

Damn you, Damn you, Damn you! Every time I think I’m out, you pull me back in. I have to try the Braida.

QOTD: When I was a kid there was Mac’s strawberry soda in southern Illinois that was the first thing we drank when visiting our grandmother.

  58. August 19, 2008

    Darlene O.

Hey, Gary! Love the episode! QOTD: Champagne: Dom, 1995. One of the BIG reasons for this one was location, location, location! :} It was Summer, ‘04, we were in Barcelona, and drinking this out of the bottle…

  59. August 19, 2008

    Chris Bartow

Mixing all the sodas from the fountain at a 7-11 to make the most delicious bubbly big gulp of all time.

QOTD: Krug Rose Champagne,#2 would be Oriel Prosecco, #3 7-Up

  63. August 19, 2008

    Wine Not?

Good show, Gary! I think your palate might be changing a bit…cool!

QOTD: The sparkling ice wine that Inniskillin does in Canada. It’s got that predictable honey sweetness but then it totally surprises your mouth with the bubbles. It’s awesome!

My favorite non-alcoholic sparkling drink would have to be Vernors which is FAR superior to other ginger ales…unfortunately, it’s not available everywhere! :(

  64. August 19, 2008

    Tony

Outstanding show…thoroughly enjoyed the play by play. John Madden may be out of a job next year.

  65. August 19, 2008

    Katherine

Great show. I’m going to try that first one.

QOTD: Now this is non-alc, but I really enjoy a Polish mineral water called Naleczowianka.

  66. August 19, 2008

    Dominus

Ahhhh, I love the Astis and am surprised myself you have never done a show on them. I thought you had. Hmmm. Anyway, I’ll try the “G” moscato to see if it compares to the Chiarelo or Bigaro that I love so much.

QOTD: I’ll go with the ‘96 Pommery Apenage Champagne. I took a tour of their caves and fell in love with the chateau and their champagnes.

  67. August 19, 2008

    Jim in Atlanta

QOTD – I like most sparkling wine drinks and can’t pick just one. Tonight I had a good Cava made of pinot that was very nice tasting and had a good pinot color. Why pick one when there are so many to enjoy?

  68. August 19, 2008

    theemptyglass

QOTD: I’m gonna go with a Jarritos in Tamarind. Lots of childhood memories and its just plain yummy.

  69. August 19, 2008

    Kelly Goff

I have not had a Moscato D’Asti yet, but will very soon.

QOTD: I love our company’s (Wine Shop at Home’s) exclusive Grand Cadeau Rose Cava right now, the white Cava is pretty good too.

  70. August 19, 2008

    Lenny

I am not a fan of sparkling wine. My favorite all time carbonated drink would probably be Barqs Root Beer.

  71. August 19, 2008

    dynamitekid

A&W Rootbeer with a slice of lime equals crazy delicious!

  72. August 19, 2008

    Dave from VA/FL

QOTD: Sparkling or anything with bubbles? Mine would be Lagunitas Maximus, an IPA from Cali that I adore, followed by the Optimator from Spaten.

  73. August 19, 2008

    BobMac

QotD: My wife’s — Mumm Cuvee M. Mine — Bundaberg Ginger Beer.

  74. August 19, 2008

My Favourite would have to be My Own Fizzy Lifting Drinks.

  75. August 19, 2008

    barrelmonkey

That’s easy: Dogfish Head 120 minute IPA. Absolute sex in the glass.

  76. August 19, 2008

    The Oak Monster

    Dustin Keller…Boiler Up!!!

  77. August 19, 2008

    amgryger

QOTD: Absolute favorite? There are a lot of craft brews I really like, but if I was stuck having to drink only one beer for the rest of my life, it would be Guinness.

  78. August 19, 2008

    Sir Lurks-A-Lot

QOTD: homemade root beer from The Moose’s Tooth Pub & Pizzeria in Anchorage, Alaska.

Have a few of those with The Classic pizza on wheat crust. Yummm!

  79. August 19, 2008

    neutron212

QOTD: you gotta go with a boston cooler. that would be verners (ginger ale) with vanilla ice cream it does not get any better on a hot night

  81. August 19, 2008

    Pete G

Huge prosecco fan and a pretty big moscato fan as well. Great bubblies
    with very reasonable prices.

    QOTD: Banfi Rosa Regale

  82. August 19, 2008

    Robin C

QOTD: I don’t drink that many sparkling wines because I tend to get sick with them if they’re too sweet, or if I mix them with another wine, but I recently had a bottle of Duval-Leroy Brut that was just outstanding. My husband and I drank the entire bottle with an omlet, and I had no headache or other repercussions.

The play-by-play is not for the entry level football fan. I’m glad you’re happy with the Jets though.

  83. August 20, 2008

    BW

QOTD – Actually, I would have to say the 2006 La Spinetta Moscatto D’Asti I had earlier this year

  84. August 20, 2008

    John S.

QOTD: i will have to go with Ale81 (”A Late One”) don’t know if its easily found outside of Kentucky(where I live) or not but if you can find one try it out write me and tell me how it was.

  85. August 20, 2008

    Lindsay

QOTD: It’s a straight-up tie between Belgian Framboise Lambic (the ONLY beer I like and I live in WISCONSIN, isn’t that sad?) and Izze Sparkling Clementine soda. Yummy.

  86. August 20, 2008

    Emily & James H.

I am kind of curious as to why you slurp even carbonated beverages? First and foremost, I would think it would get all foamy in your mouth and therefore, diminish contact with your tongue. Secondly, doesn’t the CO2 in the drink do something of the same thing as pulling air over and through wine when you slurp it?

QOTD: James-Dogfish 120 min IPA…that stuff is the shiznittle bip bap zap. Emily-Bollinger or Lucien Albrecht Cremant de Alsace Rose.

Thanks for your show, we really enjoy watching.

  87. August 20, 2008

    Jonathan Pember

My favorite bubbly drink would have to be Iron Horse Root Beer with Bawls energy drink in a close second.

Also, when is Gary going to have a Root Beer show?

  88. August 20, 2008

    John Watson

QOTD: actually, I’ve had a yummy Prosecco, several really nice Cavas, but the best is still Lindemans Raspberry Lambic. It just tastes like I imagined champagne tasted like when I was a little kid.

  89. August 20, 2008

    Paul V

    Great Show Gary, as usual.

QOTD: I haven’t had too many sparkling wines but I have been on a mission to find some that I really like.

However – at this point my favorite sparkling drink is Coke Zero. I just like it.

  90. August 20, 2008

    Matt T

    85 Veuve Clicquot Rose.

  91. August 20, 2008

    Kristen

QOTD: hmmm so many to choose from… I think I’m going to have to go with BJ’s Brewery root beer. They make their own and it’s so good.

  92. August 20, 2008

    The Lurk Monster

A&W Cream Soda That has been left in the back of the fridge for 2 months that has lost almost all of its carbonation. This makes it condense down to taste like butterscotch syrup with a bite.

  93. August 20, 2008

    Richard Ritter

I’m going to be looking for a lot of Favre to Clowney (in stride) down the sidelines (pure thunder) for tons of TDs!

QOTD: Fav bubbly drink had to be Orange Ne-Hi. What a beverage!!!

  94. August 20, 2008

    Terry

My favorite bubbly is Richard Childress North Carolina Champaigne (made from chardonnay grapes) – I’m not kidding, this wine is terrific!

  95. August 20, 2008

    john maki

    Coke

  96. August 20, 2008

    medo

Very interesting show Gary! Had the Braida Moscato D’asti a few weeks ago and liked it alot!

    @QOTD:

The best sparkling wine I’ve had was the 1992 Taitinger our of the Art Edition bottle.

  97. August 20, 2008

    J Crazy

Absolutely has to be Henry Weinhard’s Root Beer and (sorry but I just can’t choose) Half and Half Orange Cream Soda…SO GOOD!!!

  98. August 20, 2008

    Peter J Wood

Great show – had the Ceretto before and you hit it right on the head with your scoring, and I’m looking for the Braida to try that. QOTD – The best fizzy drink I’ve ever had was ‘66 Dom Perignon, but my favourite fizz (that I can drink semi regularly) is Pol Roger NV with a few years bottle age on it. It becomes a stunning wine if you cellar it… or Irn Bru (Scotland’s best selling fizzy soft drink, even outsells Coke!) – http://www.irn-bru.co.uk

  99. August 20, 2008

    RobR

Tie between Bricco Del Sole and Innocent Bystander. Both great sweet moscatos for a hot summer day

QOTD: Split between Welch’s Grape Soda and Sunqist(SP) orange soda

  102. August 20, 2008

    Justin L. Ove

Just don’t zoom in on my head like last time…That was hilarious…
    QOTD: Orangina!

  103. August 20, 2008

    Richard

QOTD: Minute Maid used to make this lemonaide soda that was so good. I think I’d have to use that as my answer, since I loved it so much and now it’s not around. I guess wines are like that, too, but this Minute Maid just made a mark on my brain that will never go away.

  104. August 20, 2008

    Lawrence Leichtman

Billecart Salmon Rose can even be non-vintage for me though the 1991 was great as is the ‘95. Not a fan of Moscato d’ Asti as they are always just too sweet and low alcohol for me though I do enjoy a few of the Muscat dessert wines occasionally especially if the bring the orange thunder for me.

  105. August 20, 2008

    Phil

Favourite bubbly drink is grape crush! Yum.

  106. August 20, 2008

    Glen...winecrazy.com

QOTD: Louis Roederer Cristal Rose – 1996

Ummm Ummm Good… like Grandma used to say!

    YUMMY!!!!!

  107. August 20, 2008

    Herm

I really have to say Warsteiner….I am not crazy about sparkling wine….I still prefer a nice Cabernet

  108. August 20, 2008

    Justin V

QOTD: Actually, I’m kind of ashamed to say it but my vote has to go with a ice cold cherry coke.

  109. August 20, 2008

    Bill T.

QOTD – I’m sure there’s better but I just love Schramsburg Cremant!

  110. August 20, 2008

    The Aesthetic Elevator

QOTD: Crane River’s (Lincoln, Nebraska) home brewed root beer was pretty nice . . .

  111. August 20, 2008

  114. August 20, 2008

    Jon-Paul Lenczuk

Great show, Gary! Very curious about these wines–

  115. August 20, 2008

    mitchcraig

QOTD: Specher Root Beer, the smoothest, velvety, rich tasting Root beer ever brewed. Brewed by the Sprecher Brewery in Glendale, Wisconsin.

  116. August 20, 2008

    SpoiledinCalbyPinot

    Hi Gary
    I´m now upset !
Aren´t WLTV supposed to be educational ?
Moscato d’Asti is made using a very unique method known as the Asti method. If you dont know this when drinking Moascato d’Asti a lot of the fun is lost.
And the difference between Asti spumante and Moscato d’Asti could be the best way to describe the alcoholic fermentation.
I think the Brechetto d’Acqui you did a few weeks ago didn’t get the oppertunity to shine due to insufficient info talk from you on WLTV.
The Brechetto is made the same way as Moscato d’Asti btw.
I hope you take me serious here cuz these wines are truly unique and true to their terroir and traditions.

    Cheers T

I first had a Moscato D’asti on a family vacation in Italy. It was a very hot summer and we stayed in a very small town and it seemed like everyone in the town square sat around having a glass of Moscato D’asti before having dinner. I usually don’t like sweet wines but really enjoy it on a hot summer evening before dinner. Maybe it is just because it evokes memories of a great time. I’ll definitely look for the Braida.

Krug NV, Henriot cuvee des Enchanteleurs Millesime 1995, Palmes d’or 1996, or the dom perignon 1998 (I know you would prefer the 1999 any day, but for me, the 1998, and now the 2000, is drinking beautiful at this point in time. The 1999 in 10 years, yes.)

But what I found with champagne is that the champagnes that I like all have higher age og grapes used. With younger champagnes (Moet chandons average age is 20 months!) you get to many green notes of apples, which I’m not perticularly smitten by. But if you can find a NV from a small producer, that uses older champagnes for their blends (vintage champagnes are obvious, the NVs are a bit tricky), they are the ones I would go for.

QOTD: That’s a tough one. Well, the Gruet Sparkling Wine from New Mexico that we served at our wedding was quite enjoyable, although probably because of the event rather then the wine itself. I bought the Tintero for my fiancee’s bridal shower and all the girls went NUTS for it. Thought it was pretty good myself too (and I got it for 10 bones not 11 at K&L), my notes were: A steal for $9.99. I’m currently staying on the west shore Lake Garda in Italy and enjoying some of the amazing thunder to be had here (mostly Gropello blended with more tanic grapes). Have just polished off a bottle of Moscato La Versa “Oltrepo Pavese” (not local to here I know) and was not super impressed. It was ok, I mean we DID finish the bottle but would definitly give a big pass in the future. Not sure if this counts as a Moscato d’Asti per se but although there was a strong scent of peaches and it was like drinking the juice that comes with tinned peaches, it didnt really float our boat. Thought we would love it seeing as we’re big Procecco fans. Anyway, at least I tried it and have an opinion about it now….

Bust out a 95 or hell why not a 100 points for the best muscato d’asti ever.
I’m gonna order some for my bubble lovin friends and if it’s half as good as you say. I’m giving it a 99.
As you say, preconcieved something or other should not prevent you from giving out 100 frickin points to the best one you’ve ever had. why can’t a weird wine get a bigger score? Is it only reserved for ugly burgundies????????????

you should try the Il Conte d’Alba Moscato d’Asti or the Stella Rosa (by the same company). they are both dessert wines, but the stella rosa is a dessert red. Favorite alcoholic sparkling of mine is a Wilson’s Creek Almond Champagne. excellent sparkling for celebrations and sweet. favorite non-alcoholic choice is Canada Dry Ginger Ale.
