    Whoo! Early today.

Actually, right now i’m drinking the Unibroue 17th Anniversary beer-which is really quite good.

Last night I did the always wonderful Bodegas Muga Rioja Reserva: and I wondered why I don’t drink Riojas more often.

Thanks for the shout-out GV! First anniversary was awesome, can’t wait to see what the following years have to bring.

QOTD: Today I had some nice South Australian wines. The St. Hallett Shiraz took the cake though!

Oh yeah…..I have the first and second generation wristbands. The first one really is a piece of $#@&, but it has nostalgic value.

Petit Sirah is almost a no miss proposition for me.

QOTD – Last weekend had a Kilikanoon Tempest 2005. Sort of thinking about a Turley for tomorrow or Friday.

    Lawrence Leichtman

Merry Edwards Sauvignon Blanc with dinner. I have 1st and second generation armbands but not 3rd or 4th. You should bring them on the cruise. I’m with Mott on the leaf raking. Hate that job except that I get to crank up the blower and blow them into the neighbors yard.

Big G, Good Stuff. Weird to watch the Show the day before on Ustream and then watch it again today.

QOTD: Always mixing it up, but I just had the Alban Viognier (loved it) Costco 05 Chat De Pape (loved it) and
One of your recommendations from Washington the Ponum (Great)

QOTD: What am I drinking? I’ve been on an Italian and Spanish kick of late. The rest of the time, I’m working through a case of Colorado wines. Canyon Wind 2005 cab franc was really surprisingly good.

most rblum reminds me of cough syrup, but i’ll try this one –
QOTD – been into funky french wines, i.e. breton’s le dilletante cab franc, and a vacqueras from charbonaire.

A few friends are having a blind under $20 wine tasting party this weekend, where everyone brings two bottles of the same wine and whomever brings a wine that people like the best gets to take all the second bottles home. I’m bringing 2005 Pasodoble. Other than that… ordered a cava when we were out for dinner this past weekend, and my friend (champagne drinker) was very impressed with her first experience. Craving rhone wines since they’re a rarity around here and I don’t really want to ship anything in this weather. I found Domaine Paul Autard Châteauneuf du Pape ‘La Côte Ronde’ (which I had especially loved in the past, although I cannot remember a chateauneuf du pape that I did not enjoy) at a local bar and got excited but it was way too over-priced so I didn’t end up ordering it. :(

2006 Hexamer Eisendell Riesling Spatlese was the best of the recent bottles I’ve had.

Sweet show, i need that first gen wristband!!

QOTD: Been diggin on the Grgich hills lately.

  33. August 20, 2008

    Andy & Edie

Le Baron Ranch School Car Petite Syrah from Russian River. It’s a pretty good wine with low alcohol 13.5%. Your shows lately have really been rocking it, keep up the great work!!

  34. August 20, 2008

    CindyW

QOTD: GaryV, we follow your lead and try a bit of everything! Some of our wine buddies have been making fun of us lately, since our wine cellar has so many different varietals. Since it’s summer, we’ve been sipping more whites and bubblies — lots of sancerre, riesling, vouvrays. I’ve also been on an Italian red wine kick, especially loving the ones I find that are super dry and/or have big tannins. And, we’ve always got some Washington wines on hand, since they’re so easy to come by here in the Seattle area.

  35. August 20, 2008

QOTD: Right now I’ve been drinking any malbec I can get my hands on, not much to have here in my small town…Just got a half case of wine from wine.woot.com looking forward to popping open a peter wellington.

    TomW

Great show Gary. Sorry i wasn’t showing the love last time I posted. I guess I was in a really bad place.

QOTD: Actually all of the new wines I got from WL were pretty awesome and a hit with the girlfriend. You have drawn me to new grapes and tasting experiences out of my norm. Loving the malbecs, viognier and tocai. Wish i could go back and get a few cases of LA Winery’s le Muscle but its sold out. i knew i should have bought it when you had the free shipping….

About number 4 — i was looking at an older show on Italian wines the other day (Nero D’avola Wines – Episode #385) and you called out on Farve and hated on him, even called him Clemensesque in a negative way…. Well I guess he’s OUR Clemens now. LOL

    Drink anything good lately?

Hmm, I enjoyed a glass of 1994 Dow’s Vintage Port the other night…that was good!

  40. August 20, 2008

Just tried 3 wines as sort of my own mini tasting (With thanks to the thunder show for the inspiration)
    Blackstone Winery 2005 Syrah (Cali)
    Red bicyclette, 2005 syrah (france)
(and my guilty pleasure all time fav.)
The little penguin 2006 shiraz (australia)

I wanted to see if I could see a huge between the countries…since they were all around the same price point. My fav at first was the Red Bicyclette, but after another 30 min of decanting the Little penguin once again rocked my socks. I might take some heat for that, but hey its AWESOME for the price I got it at :)

Between the three you can start to see what the difference between the countries, France was a little more earthy and dark, the aussies did it big and bold and cali had a hybrid of the two.

    Keep em coming!!!

  41. August 20, 2008

    Ryne Nelson

@Greg: I agree. That’s why I’ll probably wait to watch the (recorded) episode rather than get the ’sneak peak’ on UStream.

  42. August 20, 2008

    Mark S

Great show. I will definitely seek out the Rosenblum.

QOTD: 2004 Bennett Lane Merlot, Vinho Verde, and 2005 Decoy.

QOTD: Mayo 2004 Petite Sirah. It’s delicious.

    FritzTheCat

Hi, I’m mainly a lurker, but today’s show was fabulous.
I’m primarily a Zin drinker, but I bought a case of the
Rosenblum Heritage Clones a couple of months ago and shared
    some with friends…delicious!
I stopped in a store in Vermont today and picked up a bottle
of Incognito Red, a bottle of Folie a Deux Zin (love Menage
a troix), and then the proprietor whispered something about
some Turley in the back room…Well, I left with a 2006
    Juvinile, a 2006 Duarte, and a 2006 Old Vines…So, in
answer to your QOD…I’m drinking Delicious Reds!!!
But more normally, I’ve got a Cycles Gladiator Cabernet
open (not bad for a $6 bottle!), and have a Castillero
Del Diablo Carmenere 2007 that I had planned to open tonight.

  46. August 20, 2008

    RyanB

QOTD: Been enjoying many of the wines that have shown up on the free shipping deals :)

  47. August 20, 2008

    hasbeen

We have been trying some older ports that have been sitting in the cellar for a long time. Very pleased with them.

I also have been drinking some new (to me) Belgian beers.

  48. August 20, 2008

    AndrewG

QOTD: I’ve fallen in love with Brunello, and have been drinking and buying them up. Tonight I think I might try the 2001 Caprili Brunello di Montalcino Riserva, mainly to see if I like it enough to buy some more while still available at the LWS. Otherwise trying to cut back on the daily drinker approach to wine, save it up for special bottles.

Gary, I found your tasting notes of the Rosenblum somewhat interesting. I was really expecting the oak monster to make an appearance. The last bottle I had of this was vanilla for days on the nose, and had a very over-oaked finish. The odd thing for me was the previous bottle of the same wine I had none of those thoughts. I wonder what’s going on there.

  49. August 20, 2008

    Lynda S

QOTD: I think the last wine I had was a 2005 petite sirah by spellbound. it was extremely light. I am definitely on a tempranillo kick. i have been finding them and buying them.

  50. August 20, 2008

    gubby

QOTD: Been drinking mostly scotch these days. I like the smokey ones from Islay especially (Ardbeg, Caol Ila, Laphroig).

  51. August 20, 2008

    DirtWineKen

I’ve been away for awhile; but this was a great show to come back to! Just now, coincidentally, I’m drinking an Eaglepoint Ranch Petit Syrah ‘05 — YUM. In general, lately I’ve been drinking Spanish wines from Ribera del Duero, Jumilla and La Mancha as well as some really surprising Cotes de Ventoux.

  52. August 20, 2008

1st genration wrist band! QOD – Bridge Press Cab 2005 from Spokane, WA…best in the city!

QOTD…wink, wink, nod, nod. Just had the ‘07 Pine Ridge Chenin Blanc/Viognier blend. Tasty summer treat for $11. WL sells it for $10.

I have all four gen bands. Woot for me.

QOTD: 2004 Quinta da Cortezia Touriga Nacional

    Deano

Gary this episode KILLED it. I will go seek out that last one ftw.

P.S. I do have all the wristbands cuz thats how i roll.

    QOTD:
-More beer lately…I am high on Bell-haven Scottish Ale it is killer.

  56. August 20, 2008

    Alex

QOTD- Sta. Rita Hills pinots, Napa cabs and the B & B’s of Italy (Brunellos and Barolo’s)

  57. August 20, 2008

    Robin C

Looking forward to the Rosenblum Petit Syrah.
I have the original wristband, and the 2nd wristband, but then I ran out of wrists.
QOTD: at the moment, I am drinking 2006 Morgan’s Garys’ Vineyard Pinot Noir. Pretty good, but at $62.00 retail, it’s not such a good deal. If memory serves, Rippon Pinot Noir for $40.00 is comparable in taste.

  58. August 20, 2008

    Steve

What am I drinking? Anything I can get my hands on! But I have been trying new stuff I’ve never had before, such as Gigondas, but I find that a nice cool white wine really suits my pal, like the Acacia chard, the Beringer Knights Valley alluvium blanc, but I also have a soft spot for Smith-Madrone cab. Great show, will try some petite sirah, keep up the good work.

  59. August 20, 2008

    theDudesRug

QOTD: Malbecs, Carmeneres, Chianti, HopBack Amber Ale, Svedka & OJ, Caipirinhas. Pretty good rotation under my $100/month booze budget if I do say so myself.

I have no wristbands :( but I love the thunder! Love what you’re bringing GV, keep up the good work!

ps. sorry about that reciever clowney that my skinnys injured.

  60. August 20, 2008

    ETrain

Hey, this might have already been pointed out, but you did review the 2005 Heritage Clones, and gave it 89+ points I might add.
I can’t believe you don’t remember!! It’s not like you drink all that many wines.

QOTD – I joined the Biale wine club this year (I used to be in Rosenblum’s, but you can find their stuff anywhere) and have really been enjoying the Biale wines. Mostly Zins, but they have some massive Petite Sirah’s as well.

  61. August 20, 2008

    Mike S.

QOTD. Drinking Washington reds, especially some of the red blends. Delicious and incredible QRP. Drinking Italian whites, seeking out obscure grape varieties. Great acidity, wonderful golden fruit flavors, perfect with food.

  62. August 20, 2008

    SoCal

QOTD: I am drinking, Allover the place, ORE Chard, WA Viongier, ITA Barolo

  63. August 20, 2008

    Withnail

LOL @ (I’m paraphrasing you here) “Have you seen the price of hamburgers these days, Mott?”
QOTD: Summer…we’ve been drinking a lot of wine at the beach. Friulanos, Alberinos, Roses. Our beach group tries to meet at least one night a week for dinner, great cheeses and wine on the beach.

  64. August 20, 2008

    Orion S.

QotD: Well, I’ve mostly been drinking the homemade Sangio lately due to budgetary constrictions, but tonight I actually broke out a bottle of Côtes du Rhône Villages that I picked up last time I was in France.

Oh, and I know you didn’t ask what I’ve been eating, but I gotta mention the Pluots that I got at the farmer’s market this week. Good stuff.

  65. August 20, 2008

    Jason S.

QOTD: Not too much unfortunately – we’re trying for a little one so it’s tough to open a bottle and have to drink it all myself.

Great show GV. Definitely going to pick up a bottle of the Rosenblum.

  66. August 20, 2008

    Bill

Enjoyed the show. I used to drink Ridge’s petite sirah back in the day, but I haven’t had a petite sirah since I almost gagged on a poor effort from Bogle, that tasted like gasoline. Perhaps I’ll give the grape another chance.

QOTD: Actually, I have been drinking through the case of Monteviejo Petite Fleur that I picked up at Wine Library earlier this summer. Goes great with beef. And of course, some really nice roses that are killer with grilled shrimp and salmon prepared in any fashion.

  67. August 20, 2008

    Peter J Wood

Love Petite Sirah – drank my last bottle of Ridge 2000 last week, it was stunning. QOTD – I’m drinking Brew Dog beers and tomorrow some Tasmanian wines.

  68. August 20, 2008

    thecobalt9

qotd: Metromint Spearmint water & some Sancerre & Napa Cabs tonight baby!

  69. August 20, 2008

    Dr. Horowitz

I liked Prager’s Petite Sirah port (vintage?) I found reasonably priced at Bottle Barn. Petite Sirah is too chalky/tannic for me a lot of the time.

I have an original wrist band, but no 4th gen.

  70. August 20, 2008

    TimInSpokane

QOTD – we just had our wedding reception last Saturday, so I am pretty “drunk out”! We greatly enjoyed a few magnums of Anvil Red, a wonderful red blend from Forgeron Cellars in Walla Walla. We also had a 1998 Stags Leap SLV cab, which rocked and was our wedding toast wine, a 2003 Cosentino Napa Valley Reserve Cab from Vallegra Vineyard (also rocked), a 2004 Bella Lily Hill Estate zinfandel (so much thunder it burned my shorts off in a freak act of spontaneous combustion!!), a 2002 Townshend Cellars cab franc (Columbia Valley fruit, and a big wine with a wonderful coffee/toffee nose and finish to go along with blueberry and cinnamon components)…. and hmmmmm…. I honestly don’t remember what we were drinking later….. in fact, I don’t even remember “later”!

  71. August 20, 2008

    Jared Pondelik

Thanks for the show Gary! We need to have another get together in the city.

QQTD: I am actually doing a blind tasting with my parents and GF this weekend on some Chardonnay you have already rated: Estancia, Koehler 05, Tolosa 06.

  72. August 20, 2008

    pebblestx

Great show! Thanks for the belated shout-out for John F.

We just had a Chateau Prignac 2005. Not too shabby and worked well with food.

  73. August 20, 2008

    Kelly Goff

I love to learn this stuff! Right now I am drinking something new every week and loving it…tonight was a white from Chile.

  74. August 20, 2008

    Dr. Mike

I have gen one two and three but no four.

QOTD: trying lots of new whites from spain and alsace. My pal has been hankering for some shiraz from Oz with some age on it probably gonna be getting back into my heathcotes and clare valley stuff.

  75. August 20, 2008

    Dominus

“. . . whether they like it or not!” Great show. Like a good woman, it’s hard to find a good Petite Syrah. I, too, bought six bottles of Foppiano based on rants and raves and was not impressed. I still have five bottles remaining.

Pre-QOTD: Yes, I’m part of Generation One with the original wristband.

QOTD: I start off the evening with either the Oyster Bay SB or your highly recommended Koehler. Yum

As for red, I have been pounding some serious Zins like Haywood and the 2001 C.G. Aries.

P.S. I want to open this 2001 Gravner that I won in the Italian Pack in your Food auction. A hundred bone white wine is enticing.

    Cheers

  76. August 20, 2008

    Peter

As to what I am drinking it is a lot of 1996 Burgundy as I have a ton of them and if it is true that the whites are falling apart then the reds have some problems. I have not had any with the reds that I have opened yet. Has anyone tried the Ridge York Creek Petite Sarah? I have some bottles and have yet to open one. thanks

  77. August 20, 2008

    manonthemoon

    Great show, love the PS.

I have all the wristbands, but the 2nd one.

QOTD: Been mostly Pinot and beers this summer, I have been craving zins though.

  78. August 20, 2008

    Anthony L.

    Drinking Vernaccia Alata 2007

  79. August 20, 2008

    Nick G

    I have an original wristband.

QOTD: Lately I’ve been drinking Cali Cabs. I know it’s a common wine for people to drink in the US, but I’m usually into the old world and lesser known wines. I decided it was time to change it up and excite my palate with a more well known wine.

  80. August 20, 2008

    JasonH

    Great show as always!

QOTD: We’ve been drinking a little bit of everything lately, although one standout was the 2005 Boedecker Stewart Pinot Noir. Had some friends over and did a taste along while watching the show!

  81. August 20, 2008

    Harry

Favorite sparkling beverage has to be Moet and Chandon Rose 2004. My fiance and i toasted with it the night we got engaged so special place in my heart for that particular beverage. Not to mention it was delicous.

  82. August 20, 2008

    Robb0

Nice episode Gary. I’m coming out of the lurker closet for this one.
QOTD: I’ve been drinking bulmers cider served over ice recently :p

  83. August 20, 2008

    Pastafari Pirate

Yo, old school PP here, I got the original wristband. Whatwhat!

Big fan of Petite Sirah. Oh, yeah.

QOTD: I picked up a Shiraz yesterday by mistake; I avoid Shiraz (unless it’s in a blend, e.g., with Grenache Mourvedre Carignan, or a Cali field blend with Cabernet or Zin) because I have never — repeat, NEVER — had a single-varietal Shiraz that I’ve liked. Before tonight’s fortuitous mistake. I am drinking a 2004 Vina Chocalan Shiraz from Chile, and really liking it a lot. When you were tasting one of these Petit’s tonight, and you mentioned blackberries, I suddenly realized what it was about this Shiraz that I liked so much: it is oozing blackberries out the wazoo!

  84. August 20, 2008

    theemptyglass

QOTD: These past couple of weeks my bf has been working nights, so dinner is served with coffee instead of wine. So temporarily I am not drinking too much well except coffee. Coffee counts right? It’s good coffee, I enjoy it, day or night. =)

  85. August 20, 2008

    Kyle H.

Speaking of value Petite Syrah, I’ve been drinking Bogle Vineyards version. A decent wine for eleven bones. Other than that I’ve been drinking Peter Lehmann’s Clancy.

  86. August 20, 2008

    RANDI

    GARY!!
This was a great show! I love when you travel, go to restaurants, etc….but sometimes its so nice just to see you at home.. :)

QOTD: I’ve been drinking Green Lion Cab…lovn it!

  87. August 20, 2008

    jamesrmoreau@yahoo.com

QOTD: I went to a wine shop in my hometown and they had some wine varietals I’ve never heard of on clearance. I bought some $5 Tokai. I also scored a 1998 Mid Coast Zin and some Argentinian Vionger. Nothing has knocked my socks off which is why it’s on clearance, but I feel like I’m drinking a little bit of history here and none of them are bad!

Big-up’s to your fam for emigrating from their home country. I thank my stars my fam worked shitty jobs their whole life, especially my single mom to get me where I’m at!

QOTD: I’m drinking Bitburger beer. In the past I’ve bought packs of 4, 6, 12, 15 (miller light as recent as 2000), 18, 20, 24, 30, and 36. But never have I seen 8 packs until I saw an 8 pack of Bitburger, “Germany’s No. 1 Draft Beer Imported.” It’s a pretty typical German import beer, guess I got what I expected.

Hey Gary. Love the show. I have been watching since you were on the Basic Brewing podcast a few months ago but I am ashamed to say this is my first post. I am new to wine and your show is really helping me expand my palate.

QOTD-Right now I am drinking Bnektar Meadery’s Tupelo mead. Its fantastic. Also I have really been into beer from Jolly Pumpkin for the last year or so.

Just ’cause you asked… Grimace is a taste bud. That’s the original concept, not sure McDonald’s would cop to that now.

Gary! Absolutely agree with you on the Rosenblum Heritage Clones Petite. Great juice for the price point. Inky inky inky and full of dark flavors. Had it at the Rhone Rangers event in SF a couple of years back and it definitely won me over.
QOTD: Drinking some of my own wine that I’ve made with my buddies. We tend to go with field-blend type of wines. Syrah blended with Petite Sirah, Barbera, Viognier . . . Made a fantastic Rose last year from a saignee we pulled after a 4-day cold soak. Full berry flavors balanced with bright acidity!
Into Port of late as well. Tawnies to be specific. Great stuff to quaff and wind down with.

I’m drinking a lot more old world stuff than I ever have before. I live in Oregon and I grew up developing a California palatte. I was a bit of a late comer to appreciating Oregon Pinots (Noir and Gris!). But guess who turned me on to new areas (to me) like the Languedoc and Provence and the Ventoux???? And I just ordered a second case of a Rioja that I like. Thanks Gary!

Oh, and a lot of New Zealand sauvignon blancs have found their way into my glass too lately.

QOTD: Ok – so I can’t say beer because i drink and love most of them and you asked for specifics on the bubbly. I have to say that i’ve kicked my Gin and Tonics (my favorite non beer/wine drink) up to the next level by using Bombay Saphire and Qtonic. That tonic makes the difference and is leagues above seagrams or canada dry.

QOTD: It’s been hot. 2007 Chateau de Lancyre Rose. And I’ve been exploring the wines of Fronsac. And affordable grand cru Alsace wines too.

Nice. I have always enjoyed the Rosenblum Heritage Clones. It is a great way to get introduced to the grape. QOTD – I have been drinking the Drouhin Oregon Pinot Noir. Amazing juice and has one foot in the Old World but definitely a New World wine. GV you should try this juice. An easy 91-92 pter.

Interesting show…How about PS from outside Cali? Recently I had a wonderful bottle of Chateau Musar 98 that smoked the 2000 Carruades de Lafite (which was twice the price of the Musar) in a blind taste.. I also have been drinking a lot of other Lebanese wines (Ch. Kefraya Comte De M is a favorite and in the Musar’s league, while Chateau St-Thomas and Ch. Nakad are real QPRs). I also tried recently a delicious Canadian Gewurz from BC with a cool name of “Dirty Laundary”. Cheers

nice show on some qpr’s! I’m always amazed at the value in the Bogle Petite syrah! It’s such a mass produced wine but it still kicks!

QOTD : always drinking rhones if I can, of course Washington wines, but more aged wines since I’ve been able to get some wine from Vinsants cellar!! haha, and really been into the german reislings too!! Always on the lookout for something new though!!

qotd: tonight I am going head to head with a friend. my favorite wine this month a 2005 Charbonniere Vacqueyras head to head vs. a 2005 PAX Griffins Lair Syrah: I am trying to expand his pal and get him past all the kick you in the balls over the top Jam on pepper on jam Cali cults syrahs. So it is French elegance and value vs. Cali hype… for the record the Vacqueyras is less than half the price as well. (and I dont need to be on the mailing list to get it)

  126. August 20, 2008

I have the original wrist band and the original t-shirt.

QOTD: Drinking Layer Cake Zinfandel lately, and trying some white wines, which I usually do not enjoy as much.

    Rick Johnson

Gary, I’m drinking my Reisling, home wintner. I can’t watch your show without wine. This wine is in secondary fermentation and still has some fizz when drawn out of the car boy, but I like it and my friends like it. I do a lot of sniffy-sniff, I get the fruit, but it’s not done yet. I’m out of finished wine so I imagine that you would recomend I go and buy some wine rather than interupt my wine before it’s done.

  128. August 20, 2008

    JohnG

Great show, I like the Thank You at the beginning.

    QOTD:

Mostly root beers and cream sodas (I’m only 19). Trying to train my palate to discern flavors, and there’s a fairly large variety of root beers and other “classic” drinks.

    P.S. I don’t have any wristbands…..yet

My first and only petite sirah is Crane Lake. I believe they are part of the monster that puts out two-buck chuck. It’s less than $4 a bottle and have found it consistent and very enjoyable.

    FedorP

QOTD: I just picked up some Russian Ochakovo Premium Lager. This brand’s popular in Russia and they run a lot of commercials domestically. The taste is somewhere around MGD and Corona Extra. Smooth and easy to drinking. Wine wise I’m not in the mood lately, I had a good Mosel Riesling last Saturday but I suspect it was only good because of the low 8% alcohol content. It might be the style for the region? It’s good stuff for the girls I guess.

QOTD: With my limited budget, I have been scouring my local stores for some different value driven wines. Had an ‘05 Trapiche Malbec…fantastic.

Just got a 2005 Avalon Cab. Sauv…. I like it quite a bit. Though I’m still a bit of a newbie I remember having cabs in the past that were pucker city due to the tannins. Not a big fan of that. This Avalon ‘05, I liked a lot. Nice chocolate, cherry, boysenberry aroma. Not a super long finish, but still at under 8 bones, a great tasting wine my budget can handle.

    WineWoman

Only have the last 2 wristbands–2 of each

QOTD: Lately, many of my older Zins specifically the 2000’s. A few seemed like they weren’t doing much in the bottle which is why I was a little worried about cellaring Zins for a long period of time. The 2000 vintage was rainy and a meh vintage for a lot of CA. However I opened a 2000 Carlisle Zin and it still had a lot of its punch so I’m done with the Zins for a while. This weekend, some Oriel Prosecco, Herman Weimer Blanc de Blanc and some Rose–Sofia and Lea’s Syrah Rose. Might put the Oriel up against a bottle of the Rao’s prosecco that I recently purchased and see which one I like best.

QOTD: Currently, back to the Pinot Gris/Grigio survey, working my way up the price scale as well as across the Okanagan wineries. Half-bottle of Santa Margherita in the fridge just now, and picked up a bottle of Saumur, Les Pouches for something a little different (I hope).

QOTD – Old vine zins and Barbera, although last week we had a couple of the 06 Panther Creek Pinot’s and they brought alot of thunder for us. Great show, and I know exactly where I can get the Rosenblum and expand my pal because I have never had a Petite Sirah…so, thank you!

Great episode. I love PS and just had a great Ausie (Durif) over the past couple of nights. I’m not sure if anyone else mentioned this but you reviewed the 05 Heritage from Rosenblum last year and gave it an 89. Interestingly, and pretty cool, your tasting notes were very similar for each vintage indicating some consistency from the terrior and winemaking process, as well as your palate.

QOTD – For the summer we have been drinking quite alot of Oregon Pinot Gris.

  159. August 20, 2008

I am into Spanish wines. I am driking Costers del Gravet 50% Cab, 30% Granacha, 10% Carinena and 10% Tempranillo. Nice mix, good with food or by itself. Very similar to the Dominio de Longaz which WL carried but is out.

Interesting show, I’ve been trying to check out more Napa/Sonoma (since I’m in the neighborhood) wines lately since I realized I’ve been drinking too much South American (Argentina, Chile, Uruguay) stuff and nothing else.

I’ll take a break from my South American friends (don’t worry, I’ll be back) and look for some PS from Cali.

QOTD: I did just have a Gruner Veltliner for the first time the other day, found it a bit perfume-y for my taste, but interesting enough to try again.

Looks like I’ll be searching for new wines rather than the old standby’s for a few weeks. Thanks Gary!

Damn Gary, the idea of a mean Grimace just doesn’t compute, when you mentioned that the idea of an angry Barney the purple dinosaur popped into my mind and all I could think about was BARNEY SMASH! Now THAT I can picture.

QOTD: Well, while I was watching this video, I’ve been drinking a heaping glass of ice water.

  164. August 21, 2008

QOTD – I have been drinking a lot of the naked blended juice drinks that are costing way too much. i think i am going to get some actualy fruit and juice it to see if the price is better using that method. i’ve also been drinking a lot of beer recently.

as for wine – i have been trying to mix it up. i think the last 5 bottles i’ve had were all different varieties and from different countries…

Great show! I was convinced you were going to grawl, oakmonster, when you tasted the rosenblum. Glad to here they are toning down thier new American oak program. Foppiano is a very nice family and I have had some very good
bottles in the past, at very reasonable prices. Nice to see you give Pet. a little love. When are we going to see a Condrieu episode?

I’m in the process of writing a wine book for my financee (to whom I’m marrying in two months) and it’s my goal to eventually try every wine in Temecula CA. So: yes. I have had the opportunity to try many MANY different wines in the last few months. My tasting journal is quickly filling up.

QOTD: Orfila “Hibiscus” Rose’ of Syrrah. Quite good – interesting and fruity, no doubt but very tasty and quite enjoyable.

Thanks for the great show. Always enjoy your work.
Third Gen wrist bands – hope to get a coveted gen 4 at some point.

Today was the last day of public JETS traing camp. Maybe we can do a little “training camp” action next year. Hell, it’ll be in Jersey, closer to you (lucky SOB). Can’t believe the JETS have left Hofstra! Now all I have left is the Green and White scrimmage once a year.

QOTD: I’m on a big Long Island port wine kick. I’m liking the Pindar Cab Port, Osprey’s Dominion Port, Pugliese Porto Bello and white port. They’re going great with Nat Sherman Hobart cigars!

GREAT SHOW! But, Gary, you have had the Rosenblum Heritage Clone’s Petite Sirah before. I think you scored the last vintage an 89+, or something.

QOTD: I am ADDICTED to Marlborough whites right now – the freshness, the acid, the length. I am also loving ‘04 Sonoma Cabs – the fruit is so pure (Arrowood, HIghland Hawkeye from KJ, etc.) and the tannins are ripping and well placed. I am loving Central Coast and Sonoma Pinots, and also keeping up with all of the CA Rhone stuff I will always love.

QOTD: I just had a great Irish Red beer at Taps in Brea, CA.

And I am looking forward to going to The Loft at the Montage in Laguna Beach for my sister’s birthday on Friday. Tons of great wine and an amazing sommelier, (a different) Gary. He’s the man!

Gary, you should do an episode with a cool master sommelier where you two can just jive off each other. I think that would make a great show.

As an Australian I am surprised we don’t grow more Petite Sirah. Australian prefer the more fruity ‘fluffier’ and bigger and bolder oaky Shiraz instead of Big tannic Petite Sirah. I am sure it’s turn will come.

water…mmmm! And just tried my first wine from India: a Chenin Blanc made by an Italian. Awkward but was a good experience and had some hints of potential.

QOTD: Right now I am drinking 2002 Souverain Mourvèdre. Just came back from Alexander Valley and brought a case of this back with me. I enjoyed it so much that it was my first “case” purchase I’ve ever made. (and I even lugged it back home to NJ!) It was a fluke that they even produced Mourvèdre in 2002… the wrong grape was dropped off to the winery but they decided to produce a small amount anyway, and apparently over the summer they were cleaning out the cellars due to the fact that they are changing the label on their wine and found a few cases of this varietal. I thought that was pretty neat and for me brought the thunder!

I’ve been drinking a lot of tea lately, mostly jasmine oolongs, which have grown on me. Was my goal to replace all my caffeine sources with tea, so I’ve kicked the coffee and soda habits and moved to tea. I feel great and love the taste!

Its been a while since I’ve left a comment, but today I felt the need.

I have all four generations of wristbands. I actually got so many of the 3rd gen that I’ve started regifting them to friends that have started watching the show.

QOTD: My wife has been reading a lot of health books lately and found a bottle of N.S.A. Cabernet from Washington state that is organic and has no sulfites added. I popped and poured it last night and it was really young. I’m excited to try it again tonight after decanting.

Thanks Gary and the WLTV staff for a great show.

I’ve got a generation 2 wristband … my wife just doesn’t seem to understand why it’s important to me! Oh well.

Drinking a lot of Italian wines latey (Arnais, Verdiccio, Primitivo, Nero D’Avola, even a great ‘99 Altesino Brunello). Getting ready for next month: three weeks at the “mothership”, Italy!

Gary, and all, any suggestions on smaller vineyards to visit in Tuscany?

  206. August 21, 2008

    Robert P.

QOTD: I’ve been buying anything that I’ve never drank, or drank very little. Grenache, Viognier, Cab Franc, Barbera, some Italian regional thingees. Also, going back and trying some plain, old Cabs after futzing around with various other reds for the last couple months.

great show. these days i’ve been trying to drink wines from places i don’t have much experience with. I feel pretty familiar with the west coast, france, and a bit of spain, but i haven’t had much wine from italy, south america, australia or new zealand. so i am trying to broaden my horizons. it’s been a lot of fun!

Drinking 04 Bordeaux and Italian varietals as well as a lot of different whites and roses. Thanks for the Bordeaux advice. I’ve put away a few choice 05 but the prices are keeping me in check.

I have that original ghetto wristband but none of the newer ones. Love that bright yellow one.

  209. August 21, 2008

I’ve kinda jumped into beer a little. Things like Stone Brewery’s Levitation Ale and the new 12th Anniversary Bitter Chocolate Stout are just phenomenal. But for wine I’ve been trying some viognier and Rose (summers in Phoenix are hot…so don’t give me any crap about the light “girly” wines)

QOTD: Barbera. Me likey. Favorite is Valley of the Moon’s ‘05 Barbera. And I’ve tried two types of ‘05 Bordeaux from the local wine store and will continue getting into that trying to learn some of the Old World.

    GV-
Glad to see a show on PS, it’s one of my faves. I’ve been drinking a lot of shiraz lately, which is different for me. I guess my palate is changing. Keep up the good work.

I always seem to roll back to the Napa Valley Cabs even though I am trying all types of different wines. Had a Raymond Reserve last night – very tasty.

Also, I have two of the wrist bands, the Bring the Thunder and Sniffy Sniffy.
I should would like to get the others so I could wear them on the Cruise. I guess you can tell tht I am graveling here! Ken

Petite Sirah is my current favorite wine.
A party in your mouth when well done.
For a budget bottle I usually go with Bogle but
I will lay out a few more bones and look for
    the Rosenblum.

  222. August 21, 2008

    ChezJim

I have had the Foppiano P.S. and found it about the same as you did. The Bogle P.S. seems to always bring good value for an inexpensive wine. I like Petite Sirah and will look for the other two you tasted today to expand my PAL.

QOTD: Drinking a lot of Vinho Verde and Sicilian red wines this summer. They are just fun wines to have on the deck. Great with simple food straight from the grill.

  223. August 21, 2008

    CB Lukens

GV – No wristbands for me since MA sucks when it comes to wine shipping! And I’ve lost contests. But I’m commenting hard so you’ll send me one! QOTD – I’ve been digging Bonny Doon’s stuff.

QOTD: I roll with the CKC so I’m drinking a lot of everything and still feeling my way around the wine world. Just recently had a Green Groves cab, Sharpshooter pinot, some rioja, and basically whatever I have never had before.

Also, ridiculousy blow your head off PS is by Robert Foley, of Pride Mountain Vineyard fame. Best everyday PS is Vinum Cellars Pets, another dawg pound wine.

    Bernie Bearnaise

I had a bottle of Petit Petit last week which was a blend of Petite Syrah and Petit Verdot. It had an entertaining label with two Elephants facing you on the label and their backsides to you an the back. Sort of a Bigtop circus theme and the capsule was Red and White striped. The wine was excellent and fruit forward with some acid balance and a little spice thrown in. It cost about $27 and was a serious wine even if the label was all in fun.

I believe Petite Syrah (Durif) is the offspring of Syrah and Peloursin. The California vines are usually quite old and will have some field blend effects with Syrah and Peloursin and Carignan growing together with Petite Syrah.

I must try the Rosenblum now that you’ve brought it to my attention. I love their “Rockpile” wines.

  229. August 21, 2008

    Hi Gary,

Have you tried a Petite Sirah from Mexico?. The Petite Sirah of L.A. Cetto is the best that you can find (in Mexico). Try it if you have the opportunity

The only Petite Sirah I have had is the Michael-David Petite Petit which is 85% Petite Sirah and 15% Petit Verdot. I like that quite a bit. I will look for the Rosenblum in my LWSs.
QOTD: I am at this moment drinking iced coffee. Oh, you mean WINE. Well, this evening I will be having 3 different Hugel wines from the Alsace.

QOTD: What am I drinking? WOW that could be a long answer my favorite
in the past week has been…2006 Domaine Chignard Fleurie “Les Moriers”
Had at Vayniac party where 3 couples drank 8 bottles of wine!! Do the
    math. Great time.

Has an aromatic nose like HI-C fruit punch.. and smooth an silky fruity
    strawberry jam taste.

  236. August 21, 2008

    Jered

I have recently visited quite a few wineries, breweries and tastings so I have been drinking quite a variety. Imagery winery in the sonoma valley hit my PAL square with really interesting varieties you don’t see everywhere.

I also homebrew beer and mead so my own brand is dominating my mouth quite a bit. There is nothing like a beverage you have customized to your own taste and my PAL likes being beaten into submission with gigantic flavors.

    Tim Wiseman

Great show Gary, I don’t think I have spent much time wth PS, but I am excited to try it again!! I also liked the bit of education on the grape itself – feel free to do more of that!! Really good show.

QOTD: I have fallen back into Tempranillo and Grenache for a bit. Argentina is rocking my world right now!! I have to admit that I am looking around to see where I am going next, I am ready for a change.

  240. August 21, 2008

QOTD – Edenvale Pinot Noir, William James Chardonnay, Albarinos & Sav Blanc

I remember the Foppiano PS used to be a lot better, about 12 years ago

I have the original wristband, no other versions!

  243. August 21, 2008

    Carlitos

    I have the original writband.

QOTD. Ah, so many wines, so little space. A bit of everything. More whites and roses than I used to. Some Muscadets, Bordeaux rose, white Rhones… Mixing it up a bit.

I hope your “Thank you” section improves going forward. Today’s kind of implied that whoever’s left in Bielorus only has two options, to either die or go to jail, which I find a bit offensive. Maybe you can think ahead what you want to say or how you want to say it.

  244. August 21, 2008

    Robert C from Prison

Yes, I be sporting my first gen wrist band, actually my foot & a half tall vintage 1960’s Lowenbrau Lion wares it in my office.

Petite you say, found a gem from Lodi Ca of all places. Lodi generally produces over the top fruit bombs in my taste, but the 2006 Inheritance is very impressive at 11.99 found at Trader Joes.
Polished chocolate, Mocha & black fruit with a good backbone. I generally cannot find many wines at Traders that impress me, but this rocked my socks off & all my friends.
Bottle package looks like $$ Cali cult wine, not that makes a diff, but I definitly feel the wine lives up to the $$ package.

  245. August 21, 2008

Oh yeah, I have all wristbands excepts #3…not sure how I missed that one??

  267. August 21, 2008

I have been dabbling with South African blends for something completely different. Nice show. A short time ago I tried my first petite sirah; a 1998 Chiarello Roux Old Vine which was really nice but quite a bit more expensive than those of today’s show. I am excited to give the Lot 205 and Rosenblum a try. I love a great QPR especially when the P is undervalued.

Gary V., I have the first-generation wristband. Last year I sent you a pic of me wearing it in my wine cellar, but it wasn’t included in the New Year’s photo montage. Twenty dogs, but not me! Oh well; I hope you didn’t find me less photogenic than a beagle.

As for Petite Sirahs, I really like the ‘05 Bogle, which you carry. I think it’s a good value at $9. Have you had it?

Finally a wine that I’ve had before you did a show on it, Rosenblum Petite Sirah. A local wine store owner recommended it. Might just have to take a few more of his recommendations.

QOTD: Anything and everything within my price range, $10-$30.

The question was, what are you drinking today. I have been drinking “Yellow Tail Shiraz or Merlot. I know I need to expand my palette, but this is what I can afford. I will drink the best withing my price range.

    Great show!

qotd- i have been drinking lots of stuff. new stuff all the time. 2 wines that i picked up on that i liked and bought a few bottles of are Domaine Gonon from the rhone. they make a st joseph and a bottle called les iles feray. the iles is rockin my world. at 13 bucks it is what i like. it is like a lean horse. lots of stable, bright fruit and lean… kinda mean too. not for everyone. the other is an italian white from fasoli gino from the veneto. it is a 2000 bianco veronese…. garganega. love it! at 15 bucks… so good. i shared with some friends over lobsters in the cape…….damn it was good

I remember having at least one Petite Syrah (yes with a ‘y’), it was the L.A. Cetto from Baja California…Good stuff: dark berries and leather…a little young maybe, but still pretty good.

    Good show! (as usual)

QOTD: I’ve been enjoying Portuguese wines a lot. My favs are Marques de Marialva and tonight’s : Marques de Borba.

Gary, Gary, Gary, I think you have missed the boat on this one. My wife and I purchased the 2006 Rosemblum and tasted it along with you. We both immediately tasted bing cherries that our moms bottled when we were little. Give it another shot and see what you think. We can discuss it on the cruise. Ken & Sheila

Summertime is great for a nice crisp rose, and I’ve run across 2 great roses. One is called Sola Rosa and the other is from Alexander Valley Vineyards. Also been drinking a very nice Pinot Gris from Elk Cove Vineyards in Oregon. As for Petit Sirah, I have enjoyed the Foppiano as well as Petit Sirahs from Bogle and Concannon.

  288. August 21, 2008

    Rick D

I haven’t tried a Petite Syrah yet. I’m going out tonight to find one for tomorrow evening (wine Friday). I gotta stop watching WLTV because you always give me ideas on wines I need to try. Unfortunately my wine refrigerators (I have two and that’s a story in itself) are getting so full there’s no room for new. More drinking, less buying!

QOTD: really, really in Southern France, Rhone (especially), Languedoc & Roussillon. Who would have guessed that the Languedoc-Roussillon region is the largest area of wine production in the world. Some decent bargains even with the Euro trashing the dollar.

  289. August 21, 2008

I’ve been drinking some Lexia from Alice White lately. I know it’s cheap wine, but I like it, and I’m in college.

Great show….as usual (always fun when I get the preview on ustream, though!). I also LOVE the Rosenblum PS and was so happy that you liked it! I was sure you were going to hate the fruit bomb aspect of the wine but you didn’t….I think your palate is up to something! Anyway, when I smelled the wine it was totally blueberry pie….all day long!

QOTD: Tried 2 Cameron Hughes 2005 Meritages last night….different lots….both were quite good!

Qotd: I have had a lot of interesting wines lately. I was in Croatia and Hungary for vacation. Many of the wines I had in Croatia smelled and tasted a bit like brined green olives. I had some real nice red’s from the Kékfrankos grape in Hungary. Then to top it off I had a ‘78 cab from Napa when I got back. It was supposed to be an $8-10 bottle on release. It was supper funky smelling and tasting when it was opened, but after around 3 hours it was fairly decent. There was still some decent fruit after all of those years.

I love my Petite Sirah. Any wine that turns your teeth blue is OK with me. I’ve had every vintage of Foppiano going back to 1996. The 2004 is a little tough now but I think better years are ahead.

I promise to wear it next time I see you, GV!

Drinking not spitting Jacob;s Creek sparkling rose and Snoqiual,,,”sorry” riesling. The sparklers easier drinking and nice, the riesling is sweet but quality. Considering costs very good. Gary are you still drinking the hard to fine wine that you are happy to ship?

QOTD: Not very much! I have been working too much and too late to drink. The last bottle I did have was a Greece – St George that was very interesting. It was cross between a pinot noir and barbera in its profile. It was my first, so I am going to try some more in the months to come.

Gary, the Graves (WOW) and the Gavi were at your WLTV recommendations. The Graves was fantastic, blew my guests away. And the Gavi, which I never had before, was so spot on delicious that I will be adding that to my next case purchase. Keep up the great work!

I also got a 1993 Foppiano Petit Syrah sitting in my wone fridge. Went to a tasting where you could try the same bottle through like 20+ years. The 93 stood out to me as excellent. So I bought a bottle.
QOTD 2: I am drinking: wine, beer and booze

  325. August 22, 2008

    Dan Harms

QOTD: I’ve been drinking wines with really distinct and strong noses/flavors.

I had the Westerland 2005 Pinotage which has the overwhelming taste of Cigar tobacco ripping through it… I drank this wine and felt like I was sitting in my grandfathers living room – it was awesome and had a really nice long finish.

Another wine I enjoyed a bit less but had a fantastically strong scent was a Montepulciano d’Abruzzo that smelled exactly, and I can not be emphatic enough about how exactly this wine smelled, like a horse stable. Not a real dirty horse stable but one that had been cleaned and fresh hay was there for the horses. A bit abrasive and acidic on the mid palate and finish, but I went back for a second, third and fourth taste because it was so unique. Fantastic if you’re looking for a wine that will expand your palate.

Didn’t care about the wristband then don’t care about them now! Just wine!;)

Like the “Baseball Glove” reference. Don’t remember the wine but about two months ago caught some baseball glove(chewed string) leather in a wine. Thought it was pretty interesting.

Will be looking for the Rosenblum PS!

How about a little Melon de Bourgogne from De Ponte Cellars out in Dundee Oregon…

  340. August 22, 2008

    Emily & James H.

We drink something new pretty much every time we drink. Whites have been dominating, with Gewürztraminer, Viognier (and other Cotes du Rhone whites), Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc from all over, and Chenin Blanc making up the majority, but also digging the Portuguese, Greek, and Chilean reds. Really looking for cool new stuff to try…it’s harder to get rarities like Hungarian reds and whites, other South Americans, Balkan, Canadian non-ice wines. Really like the “thank you” intros; it’s nice to see people appreciating what they have and realizing how great they have it!

QOTD: I just came back from a summer holiday in England. Surprisingly, Australian wines are cheap there compared to Germany, where I live. So I splurged and brought home 20 bottles of various price ranges and varietals. One of the best so far was a Cabernet Merlot blend from Willow Bridge, a 2006 “Dragonfly” for around 10-11 bones. Really well balanced and full of character for a wine in this price range.

Gary!! LOVE YOUR SHOW, LOVE YOUR ENERGY, LOVE THE “SNIFFY SNIFF”!!!

Lot 205 Petite Sirah ROCKS! You didn’t mention this, but after it is open about 30 minutes is opens up tremendously and is BLUEBERRY PIE. AWESOME. Acutally, I think the wine is pretty sophisticated, especially for the price…just the kind of QPR I look for!!

As far as Rosenblum–WATCH OUT! Constellation wines just bought them and everything Constelation touches turns to absolute CRAP. Sad but true (in my opinion).

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR AWESOME SHOW AND GREAT ATTITUDE TOWARDS WINE! SPREAD THE LOVE!

QOTD : Aussie Shiraz. Had the 2005 Turkey Flat yesterday. RP gave it a 95; I would go more like 92+. A very solid effort, but not a mind blowing 95. Going to have the 2005 Massena Epsilon Shiraz tonite. RP 94 pts. Will be interesting to see how they compare.

Love the petite syrah ! Have had the 2003 Foppiano & it was great (would go 91 +) Have not had the most recent version. Stags Leap is my favorite PS though.

I drank a 2006 Rose from Shoestring (in SB County) that was much better at the winery than now. Saw the 2006 McPrice Myers L’Ange Rouge the other day and am going to snap that up b/c 2005 was delicious. Got my first taste on Inskilin (sp.?) Ice Wine the other day and loved it.

I have all of the wrist bands. I will have to see if I can get them all together and send in a pick with all of them. :-)

It’s nice to be back watching GV kicking some A! I love the value shows, and I find the Rosenblum finding very interesting.

QOTD: I’m drinking a lot of things, but lately I’ve been leaning toward CDR, Barbera, and New world white blends. Usually the choice depends upon the dinner menu :)

QOTD: Today, a Cottesbrook Sauv. Bl. from New Zealand. Earlier today, enjoyed
a Malbec rose from France. Both very unusual and distinctive.

Actually been drinking black cherry martinis lately.. I sure love black cherry vodka.

Love the Mean Grimace Reference! You need a Grimace for your table. They used to make them back in the 70’s. Classic!

Had a flight of 4 white wines with dinner at Merriman’s in Waimea, Hawaii. Two were quite average, another had that hint of burnt rubber I don’t like, and the 4th was very interesting and complex (honeysuckle and a bunch of other things on the sniffy-sniff) but not focused and not worth remembering for when the vacation is over.

Been drinking madiran lately (laplace specifically). Really digging the tannat grape. Love a wine that bites me back!

Most recently drank a flight of 4 white wines with dinner at Merriman’s in Waimea, Hawaii. Two were quite average, another had that hint of burnt rubber I don’t like, and the 4th had a very interesting and complex nose(honeysuckle and a bunch of other things on the sniffy-sniff) but was not focused and probably not worth remembering for when the vacation is over.

QOTD: Tenuta di Arceno 2004 PrimaVoce. If you’re into mocha coffee goodness, give this wine a try.

Funnily enough, Wine Spectator issued their “Tasting Highlights: California Petite Sirah” on their website yesterday. Their two top picks are ROSENBLUM Petite Sirah Napa Valley Pickett Road 2006 and ROSENBLUM Petite Sirah Contra Costa County Pato Vineyard 2006… 2006 must have been a good vintage for Rosenblum.

  378. August 26, 2008

Nice show Gary. I always grab a Petite Sirah when I see one as the QPR is usually great.

When will we see Pops again? It’s been a while.

awesome….petit sirah is a great change up to throw in your wine drinking rotation..had a killer 96 pommard 1st cru last night with dinner!

Still need the yellow one :-)

QOTD: NV Pichetti Tahoe Red. This neighbor of Ridge is putting out some very good juice.

QOTD: Enjoying two GV roco’s: the Prado Ayala 2006 Rioja and the 2006 Espelt. I went nuts over the 2005 Espelt (I still have one bottle tucked away that I can’t bear to pop), and was really leery of them doing the same thing again. They did. The 2006 brings the same serious under-$10 thunder as its predecessor. Prado’s bringing the same brand of value thunder. These are both “real” wines for 10 bucks. Can’t beat that on a Tuesday night.

  382. August 26, 2008

    DaveyDonut

That Rosenblum sounds great… The first Petite Sirah I had was the Concannon Limited Release that you suggested a few years ago. Good stuff!

QOTD: I am drinking the 2006 Yering Station Pinot Noir Rosé Extra Dry. It’s pretty good, actually! One of the better Rosé’s I’ve had. I wouldn’t agree with the 90 points by Josh Raynolds, but still… tasty.

Interesting show – it is always good to see how some of the cheaper wines go.

QOTD: Lately I’ve been drinking some very good Picpoul de Pinet – only discovered it recently, but it is a nice change from a riesling or sauv blanc.

  384. August 27, 2008

    IPBrian

I am finally getting caught up…almost there.

    QOTD: Water…seriously.

I’m lucky to have all 4

Last wine was a bottle of Phillips Hill Pinot Noir with my wife and friends in Cape May. Great setting, food and the wine brought it all together.

Very interested in trying the Rosenblum, haven’t ahd a Petite Sirah in a long time, so long not sure what it was!

QOTD: Most recent bottles — Beckmen Estate Grenache, Benton Lane Pinot Noir, Gary Farrell Sauvignon Blanc, a nice Aglianico, a cheap Chianti (bottles not handy, and names not memorable)

  387. August 27, 2008

    JayZee

QOTD: Tonight I’m drinking a very nice 2005 Chateau Bellevue. Good stuff!

  388. August 27, 2008

    Good show.

QOTD – Right now I am drinking Sauvignon Blanc, Brancott 2007 from New Zealand, Joesph Verdier 2004 Sancerre, and Chateau Souverain 2005 Alexander Valley California. this is an exercise I am following to determine the different styles of the grape. Man am I having fun, study hall was never this much fun!!!

QOTD: non-wine beverage: V8 juice! wine beverage: Tempranillo

  390. August 28, 2008

    ex-lurkdawg

I’ve been trying to focus on wines that I don’t usually drink. For me, those are Spanish reds and California Merlots and Sauvignon Blancs. I’ll soon be moving into Prosecco and Moscato d’Asti. I’m also mixing in the usual variety of Italian reds and Southern French roses because they keep me so happy.

  391. August 28, 2008

    M

I don’t have any wrist bands. Boo Hoo. Sniff Sniff.

QOTD: I’m always drinking something good. Almost everyday. In moderation. Expanding my palate.

  392. August 28, 2008

    Andrew D

    Thanks Gary

QOTD: Waht am I drinking? Coffee, water, fruit juice and wine. Trying to drink a bit of Chinese wine at the moment – many avcerage, some resoable. Also trying a fair bit of stuff from New Zealad and Portugal.

    Cheers

GV – I am a big fan of Petite Sirah! Have you ever tried the Elyse version? Dynamite!
QOTD – I am on a Spain binge. I have purchased probably 3 different Albarinos and the Emilio Moro from Ribera del Duero – absolutely magnificent.

  394. August 30, 2008

    eagleputt

I have found two different drinks (for me) in the last couple of weeks. One, a 2003 version of the Sauternes you recommended in a previous show (very good… I’ve ordered a case of the ‘05), and a chocolate shake w/ Baileys and Kahlua that is THE new summer porch / baseball / early fall football drink for me. Outstanding. By the way, simply put, my Seahawks are going to CRUSH the lowly jets this year and Tatupu is going to knock Brett Fav-ra into final retirement. I’ve got two seats to this game with your name on it if you have the guts to show.

  395. August 31, 2008

    Dawn Imdieke

    I have the 1st generation wristband… :)
Drinking more whites in this summer heat, just had DuMol Chardonnay, very enjoyable…

I’m on a Cotes de Rhone binge!
Another answer to that Q could be: too much!

    Karl Laczko

Am still trying to decide if I like Petit Sirah or not, need to keep trying.

Wristbands – yes, I have the original, and Gen2 & Gen3. Not got Gen4 though.

QOTD – Kayra terra 2005 Öküzgözü from Elaz??, in the East Anatolia Region of Turkey. It’s not that great, but it’s drinkable!

  398. September 3, 2008

    tinman9

Really good show. Opened my eyes up to a varietal that seems like it would be just my speed. I really like zins but i think i miss the tannin structure that most of them lack. But let me say this.

QOTD: Neyers High Valley Vineyards ‘05 Zinfandel – Really really solid stuff. Great nose, mouthfeel, and it lingers forever. A perfect example of what California Zinfandel can be. This wine is much more than just jammy alcohol, this is some serious stuff. TRY IT.

QOTD: Sad to say, coffee. Working 10 hr day with 2 hour commute does that to a person!

  400. September 3, 2008

QOTD: I’m drinking what I brought back from my honeymoon in NZ – some Central Otago pinot noir and some Bordeaux blends from Waiheke Island.

  401. September 5, 2008

    Rob Howells

QOTD- I am drinking the Root:1 Cabernet Sauvignon from Chile. Very nice indeed.

    Gary,

In regards to the wristbands, I have the 1st and 2nd generation ones and I wrote you a letter in hopes that you would send me number 3 and 4.

  402. September 9, 2008

My wife and I had the Rosenblum Heritage Clone yesterday and it brought the Thunder!!! You nailed it again Gary V.

  403. September 12, 2008

    Darcey and Cliff

Well done! Darcey and I each have one of the Gen. 1 wristbands. We also have two Gen. 3 but we seem to have misplaced our Gen. 2 wristband! DAMN! Can we get another Gen 2?

ALSO: How do we get a Gen. 4 wristband? We’re so needy!
QOTD: Believe it or not (I can’t, really) I had a 1970 Barolo last night that was quite good 92 points at least. It was cloudy and threw more than its fair share of deposit, but was very good. Rustic, leathery, a bit sweet, rasisny, delicious.

  404. September 14, 2008

    QOTD:

Tonight, here in Washington, D.C., I am basking in the glow of attending an opera simulcast of La Traviata in the new Nationals’ Stadium ballpark. How often can a person shout “brava!” in a baseball stadium? Life is good. With that as a prelude, I recommend:

    2005 Yalumba Barossa 95% Shiraz, 5% Viognier, 14.5% abv, $11 @ Costco

    Aroma: cherry oak
Taste: chocolate berry w/mild pepper, medium fruit, warm and long (but not brilliant, alas) finish.
Tasty, pleasant, and very good value for the money. Not as silky or as much a fruit bomb as Shotfire Shiraz. Very nice weekday-chill wine.

  405. September 15, 2008

    Ryan D

Got the first generation wristband, prize of my collection. Only one I don’t have is the 4th generation because non of my family or friends are wine geeks like me.

Drinking some Penfolds, decent but not amazing. Need to find a better wine shop with a better selection having recently moved to Knoxville, TN.

Catching up on past episodes after the move [watched 10 at least, so far today]. Better than ever, Gary.

This comment is coming in kind of late, I know, but just catching up on the past episodes.

Haven’t tried much Petite Sirah but will be on the lookout for some in the near future…

QOTD: I’ve been sticking with the local microbrews recently, mostly Sprecher products.

  407. September 25, 2008

    yowens

Great show. Gary- I would love the 3RD GEN wristband! I have 1,2, and 4. I promise to send a picture! QOTD: Chat Marjosse 05′ (my first bordeaux from 2005)- its going to be a fun time running though different bordeaux’s from this year.

Another late post, but you gotta give some props for catching up on a ton of episodes today..
I’m drinking a ton of excellent beer– for much less than wine, it brings just as much thunder! Although everything tastes better out of a wine glass. Cheers

Starting the catch-up episode-watching here. I’ve got the full set of 4 wristbands, now wondering if a 5th has been created in my absence! We bought the Foppiano tasted here, too bad it didn’t score so well. Will definitely keep my eyes out for the Rosenblum though. My wife and I are almost through a 4 half-bottle purchase of the Elio Perrone Moscato…lovin’ it! Also recently joined the wine clubs for Little Vineyards and Wellington (both in Sonoma).

No wristbands for me :( I swear one day!!! *shakes fist* QOTD: Enjoyed a very good Yambula muscat. Nice caramel, raisins, and oak with some burnt sugar in the background. Yum!!

    Jon R

The Rosenblum stained my kitchen sink not to mention Gary’s teeth. It got a little distracting at one point.
The creaminess comes from the 60% American oak that the wine was matured in. This is why it reminds you of Australian Shiraz. That is the most common oak they use.

    QOTD: Stags’ Leap petite sirah

  413. November 18, 2009

QOTD: Been buying lots of mixed cases so trying a new bottle everytime, usually 1 in 10 is worth buying again if i’m lucky (mostly at the £8-15 range)
That said i went to this cool place in London whose concept i’m sure people will have come across (http://www.thesampler.co.uk) where I was able to try a small amount of several things for a similar fraction of the full bottle price, such as Château Gruaud Larose 1966 (never had any aged Bourdeaux, but this was awesome!) a Rivesaltes AOC Vin Doux Naturel 1969 by Baixas D’Agly, caramel and walnuts, also awesome!
