GV – I’ve been trying for years to get myself into Ger. Reis. and I haven’t gotten there yet. Even though I know they are wonderful, go well with food, low in alcohol, can be drunk in all seasons, etc. I suck – I have to change this…

Great show GV. I cut my wine teeth on German wines. Even though I have moved on to more reds, I still go back to a good German Riesling two to three times a year.

QOTD: The last German Riesling I drank was a Kabinett. Can’t remember the producer. I haven’t had a spatlese in years. Time to take a trip down memory lane.

QOTD: Hi Gary, thanks for this line up. The last German wine I had is Gewurztraminer although I can’t remember the producer the wine was purchased from UK retailer. Lovely floral aromas one of my favs.

I love the dryer Rieslings from Germany! I go each November for the latest from the eastern half of Germany. Auslese, Kabinett, Spatlese – all have their own times to enjoy. Kabinett is my fav for just drinking by itself. Spatlese is a little sweet for my pal, but works well with pie. or 10% seltzer water.
GREAT SHOW! Educational!
QOTD: Any German Riesling with QmP rating, but last one was 2005 Anselmann Kabinett Riesling.

I can answer the question for once, though I totally wish it was a better wine. Black Tower Riesling (2006?). Drank at a party with a bunch of my friends. I made them sniffy sniff the wine which was awesome.

QOTD: Schloss Schonborn Rheingau riesling 1994. A basic German riesling, but still alive and vibrant after 14 years.

Really nice show, those sounded great.

QOTD: I had a Riesling Spätlese Trocken wine recently. I have no clue where it’s from as the label’s german is a bit too advanced for me. Didn’t know what trocken meant at the time, wasn’t expecting it too be so dry. Was very high on acid, quite nice. It was a gift for my dad on a business trip in Germany.

The last German wine I had was one I actually have another bottle of in the fridge, J.u.H.A. Strub 2004 Niersteiner Brückchen Grüner Veltliner Kabinett trocken. Yum. I love the Strub wines, they don’t disappoint and since I live in Berlin, the prices are great (5.15 euros a bottle). They make a great dry Riesling too.

QOTD: 1981 Karthäuserhof Eitelsbacher Karthäuserhofberg Riesling ‘Sang’ Spaetlese. Word to the wise, you can find Spätlese(n) at the under $10 price point at Trader Joe’s or the local wine store, but don’t bother. You need to be $15+ before you can begin to touch the realm of these wines tasted today.

Interestingly enough, Mönchhof aka Robert Eymael also has a Christoffel under his umbrella called JJ Christoffel, who is rather good. Dr Christoffel is new to the US scene and is not very well known in Germany either. If you go to wine-searcher.com you’ll see who is carrying this wine in the US

Weil is not pronounced like ‘while’ as a poster suggested it is ‘vile’. Another poster asked about the Doktor moniker on wines. Culturally, Germany puts the emphasis on WHO the estate belonged to at the beginning. Long ago as now, the person had to be of means to buy a vineyard. Even in the 1800’s when many of these named wines came to be, property was expensive. It often took a doctor to buy one, also the owner may have a doctorate in _something_, sometimes agriculture, sometimes philosophie…..education sells in Germany, unlike other places I can think of.

Great show and much improved pronounciation on “Spaetlese”. Next German lesson, Weil is pronounced “While”, not “Wheel”.

I think you probably need to consider how these three wines will evolve and where the Weil will be in 10 to 15 years as it puts on a little weight and continues to evolve. Kind of like that 195 pound HS linebacker that goes into Ohio State and comes out a 245 pound monster First Round NFL draft pick – oh yeah!
