I just came back from a Nile cruise with 40 friends, a good portion of whom were foodies and oenophiles. We were extremely disappointed with Egyptian wine, and even switched to cocktails as much of it was undrinkable. The Obelisk wine that you tasted was far superior to all other local Egyptian wine. Why? One theory which was widely held is simple: the Egyptian government currently slaps a tariff of between 600 – 3000% on all imported wine, making any non-Egyptian wine essentially unaffordable and thereby protecting the Egyptian industry. As those tarriffs slowly come down in the next decade, I think Egyptian producers will be forced to improve their game.

I think everyone should go to college and get a degree and then spend six months as a bartender and six months as a cabdriver. Then they would really be educated.

Great show…….good information. A bit surprising though to think that a muslim country produces wine but it is a good thing.
