Very Funny show. Love the Blood Advocate. I’ve been noticing that you seem to mention Ohio wines a lot lately. Not sure if it’s a good thing or a bad thing but hey at least we are getting mentioned.

By the way, interesting episode. Is there really such a drink, or did HBO put you up to this? I went on the site and didn’t see the drink for sale, just t-shirts and hoodies.

Did Robert Parkula give this a high score? I don’t know if I want vampire drinks sleeping in my cellar.

OK, that was weird GV. Have you been smoking something?

    Hey Lestat,

Thanks for the intro into the blood drinking arena. Still looks like you preferred the trublood to the Ohio wines….

Type O blood type, so based on your review I am obviously too much for you.

    Suck on that Lestat…

I’ve heard the Rh negative wines are pretty tight like you were saying, but the positives open right up. And there’s some stinky butt smell in the O+ (which my wife always references in wise cracks about me :P )

Dude…that was in fact EPIC, and you are right, HBO does owe you for that! Just another reason to love what you do. You aren’t afraid to do something fun! Loved it! and as I twittered you, Greatest season ever? Don’t you think Joe Namath would dispute that? Cuz really, can you argue with Broadway Joe? I’m a football fan because of him! Have a great weekend all!

Gary, you might also try a blend of the traditional Transylvanian varietals. 60% O+, 35% A-, 5% petite verdot would probably do the trick.

Great stuff, Gary. Who hooked you up with the Tru:Blood? Do you have another huge HBO-employee fan I need to know about so that we can start a tasting group? I’ll be passing this around over here.

That’s classic. Too bad you can’t get that stuff. I bet after all the hype they’re actually considering marketing it though…

What did you eventually go with for the liquid? Looked like grape juice with a bit of corn starch in it to thicken it up?

O negative as well. So what does Blood Spectator say and how about Robert “Fangs” Parker. Has he reviewed these as well. We already know that Steven Tanzer is a vampire so I expect his reviews to be err blood curdling.

QOTD: a true rarity — ABnegative.

It didn’t suit your palate, obviously, from the look on your face — was this not enough like roadkill deer with cherries on top?

I wonder if vampires will get more nuances from this TruBlood. Do they feel memories and relive experiences, in the same way as they do with actual blood? Is there a different psychological reaction? Interesting to comtemplate. :)

I’m surprised that the “O” was more complex… it seems like that would be the least and an AB would be much higher in complexity. That would be one interesting tasting group….

haha- Amazing! How’d you do it all without laughing??
I tried the ‘86 Chateau Dracula Type O Negative a while ago. It had an amazing dark vegetal component with nuances of summer fruits accompanied by some finely grained tannins. Well worth a try if you can ever get your hands on a bottle.

So Gary, I just got back from evacuating from hurricane Gustav – I’m a New Orleans resident. I packed my most near and dear/important possessions in the car – insurance paperwork, social security card, tax documents, photos, etc., and a few days’ worth of clothes. Also in the back of the car was yes, of course, all the decent wine I have at home, along with my wine refrigerator, which fit nicely into the back of the car and plugged into my car’s power supply. The wine (including the 6 or 7 bottles that I’m holding on to) didn’t get above 70 degrees despite a hot drive, and after a couple of new bottle acquisitions while staying at my family’s home in Alabama, the wine made the trip back, plus the new bottles I picked up while there.

I also housed a couple friends who didn’t have anywhere to go during the storm, and my family and I cooked up a couple great meals. I went through quite a few bottles there, some great and some not so great, and had (among many other bottles) the second Tokaji I’ve ever had, and had a great time with family, friends, food, and vino. An adventerous trip, to say the least, but one filled with friends and family and good times.

More importantly, the VERY first thing I did after getting back and unpacking my car was to catch up on WLTV. No joke, as soon as everything was back inside, I headed to the computer and checked out what you’d been drinking while I was tucked away a couple hundred miles inland. I’m glad to see you did the Egyptian wine, really cool thinking about the history of wine there… and the Indian wine… you can never expand your palate enough, indeed.

Thanks for a few great shows to welcome me back. As far as the QOTD — A negative.

    Blood? …for real?

QOTD: O Positive. Human. And every time I taste my own I always get a hint of Twizzlers of all things…( not kidding you, it’s sweet. )

QOTD: Blood type is A+ which isn’t what I’d rate this episode. I got all excited at first because when I saw the bottles, I thought you were doing a Root Beer or Soda episode. You certainly deserve to have a little fun for as hard as you work.

    Dr. Dan

Cute show. Not over the top, just the right amount of silliness. You’re right, you deserve to have a little fun with the show once in a while.

    QOTD: I think that I’m a universal recipient, AB+.

  78. September 5, 2008

    Lord Nouda

Wow, Gary, you don’t halt at anything. I bet the vampiers will appreciate it although your obviously not converting. And at the end of the day, Vino is just grape blood being forgotten for a year and then bottled. Right? BTW: are the bottles made from plastic or glass? If plastic, won’t that affect the ‘blood’ when put away for a year?

QotD: I actually don’t know my blood type directly. But if genetics is right and my parents are – actually – my parents I should have type 0. What’s yours then?

Fun show. As you can tell from my fav T-shirt post in ep 532, “Ski Iraq,” as featured in “Six Feet Under,” I’m a huge Alan Ball fan, and I am look forward to “True Blood.”

  85. September 5, 2008

    Adam Teece

QOTD: I am a very common type. A+

I hear my blood type is very accessible to the palate which is a good thing because it is the most common blood type in the world. I’ve only known a couple of Vampires in my day, but they were good people. I definitely don’t envy their inability to enjoy a nice sunrise or sunset, but that’s what the internet is for.

So I’ve given blood many a time – I hope it help many who had come across unfortunate situations.

But for some odd reason no one will tell me what blood type I am. I would go and give blood and they would say “You’ll get a donor card in the mail with your blood type on it etc” and never would the mailman deliver.

    So I asked my doctor.
    No answer.

I’m starting to think something is wrong with me.

Great show Gary. Kinda strange beverage, keep them coming.

Gary, I love ya, but holy m’f'n marketing. If you didn’t get paid for that bit I don’t know whats going on with the world. Please tell me I’m wrong. From “I don’t remember the place, I don’t remember the girl, but the wine was Chambertin” to…fake HBO blood.

    Again, I love you.

Gary…no joke, probably the most disgusting show you’ve ever done. I still love ya though.

I think we missed something going into this show. What was that stuff made out of? My wife says she thinks blood smells and tastes like copper or like a penny. Did you get any of that when you tasted that stuff? Very strange….

Gary I know you are funny, however, I really didn’t know you had such a great sense of humor. With this Dada / Surrealism episode I am OVERJOYED. You BROUGHT THE THUNDER. I love that you can talk about Cotes du Luberon and then switch it up to a blood tasting episode… Mad props. Actually I am not sure If you have ever mentioned the former, but you catch my drift.

I fell asleep at my computer last night. Why, you ask? Because these shows are really starting to get boring. (that, and the three glasses of wine I had):-D

As a long time Vayniac I relish the old days when GV would educate us by answering questions, reviewing wines the are readily available, and occasionally pointing us to exceptional values.

Gary should have savd this spoof for Halloween.

A titillating show Gary. I had the good fortune of tasting some Tru Blood “O” at an offline, and I have to say, it was a little OTT fakey-fake with iron and minerals. Not as good as the real thing.

Isn’t synthetic blood kind of like “Caffeine Free Diet Coke?” The only people who drink it weren’t drinkers of the original, they get made fun of for having it (tucked away behind the real blood) in their fridge, and although it is technically better for your health than the blood of lethargic couch potatoes with high cholestorol called humans (honestly, you folks should drink more wine – it’s good for their health, and it makes you taste better), sometimes you just can’t be sure what “synthetics” they put in it.

I mean, would YOU drink a synthetic wine made of blood? I think not.

wow, this was one of the strangest eps we’ve seen. My husband and I have been watching via podcasts downloaded from itunes starting some time in August. Viewed your “blood” video at 3:00 AM. Thought it was just another nightmare. From Texas to Ohio to India to Egypt to Blood. I hate to think of what is coming next. How about a blind tasting on Montepulciano D’Abruzzo. A great wine that does not get a lot of attention. Another idea, a weekly show on “Best Buy” wines. Please get back to the old Gary that we all know and love. Keep up the best wine show on the net.

Is the Vayniac Nation aware that Red Bull, and beverages of that type have been officially linked (especially w/ alcohol) to heart disease, and increased stickiness of arterial plaque? Red Bull is now banned in Norway, Denmark, France, and Uruguay, due to immediate health concerns, and has been linked to deaths in Ireland, and other countries. Tru Blood’s website is not interested in saying what it’s even made of, and I’m not interested in marketing fads that are solely interested in my money, but don’t give a damn abut public health.

It is a orange flavored drink that was produced for the HBO series Tru Blood! lol So who ever pranked you Them 1 You 0. Which leads us to MIAMI 31 jets 27. You had the jets 27 right, but man did you mess up on the MIAMI score! So let’s see that would be Everyone 2-you 0.
