    Happy B’day SV!

QOTD: Never had Az. vino. When I think of Az., I think of an old pal of mine who went to Az. State Unv., who regaled us with tons of stories (some of the the stories might even have been true) of what he referred to as the greatest party school in the US.

QOTD: We do not get ANY Arizona wine here in Eastern Canada. I am lucky enough to have some Washington State and Oregon wines to enjoy here.

Great show though, I didn’t know Maynard James Keenan was into wine. I am no longer a lurker…

QOTD: I think of watching the Cardinals lose to the Diamondbacks first round of the playoffs in ‘01 when I think of Arizona. (Sucked!) Have not tried any wine from there yet either. It would be kind of cool if everybody going on the ThunderCruise could bring a wine representing their state to share, but, yeah, I read the rules, not allowed….RULES BLOW!!!!

I am putting the 11th on my calendar. This should be fun.

    Cheers and thanks again,

QOTD: Have never had an AZ wine, but spent a lot of time there. My in-laws lived in Scottsdale for a while and we spent our family vacations there. When I think of AZ, I think of Sedona, which we made a point of visiting every time out. Next time, I’ll be visiting a couple of wineries for sure.

I’m an Arizona girl, and I can’t believe it, I was in Sonoita (Sa-Noy-ta) last night and had some lovely wine with a big mesquite grilled steak. It really is beautiful here in wine country. I keep telling you to do the Thunder Show direct from the stunning THUNDER Mountains (Huachucas). Your Dad would love it too, Hummingbird Capital. It will change your world, I promise. Be my guest.
Thanks for always staying fresh and exposing us to new stuff. Spaciba.

QOTD: I’ve never had an Arizona wine, but I do have an affinity for the southwest. I was born in El Paso and lived there for 20+ years. There is nothing like a desert sunset and one of the best ones I have ever witnessed was in Arizona.

QOTD: The closest I’ve gotten to an Arizona wine was Gruet from New Mexico, so the answer is no–never had one. I think of Arizona as a vacation type of state–I also think of Dry HEAT!!!!! Aside from landing at the airport in Phoenix, I’ve never had the pleasure of visiting the state and would love to see the Grand Canyon.

QOTD: I’ve never had an Arizona wine, but when I think of AZ, it reminds me of John McCain, retirement and heat.

Gary, I sent your dad a happy birthday email. He’s in good company, we just celebrated my grandfather’s 88th birthday last week and in two weeks we get to celebrate my mother’s birthday as well!

QOTD: I’ve never had wine from Arizona, but I hope to one day. I don’t know how correct this is (I’ve never been), but Arizona conjures up images of the desert and heat. I know that’s sort of stereotypical. Sorry to anyone who lives there.

QOTD: I’ve never had an Arizona wine. When I think about Arizona I think about my cousins who live there, the Grand Canyon, and Sedona – great shopping.

We had the Rosenblum Petite Syrah Heritage Clones 2006 tonight. It was exceptional.

Happy birthday to Sasha. I think he named you Gavrel.

  57. September 10, 2008

    Jason Baer

THANK YOU for doing an AZ show.

I’ve been collecting them for a long time. The Callaghans are good friends. We own a bunch of property right near them, and they are awesome people and are killing it with their wines. They have something like 10 different wines. Padres is good, and also look for Caitlin’s, Claire’s, Buena Suerte and Lisa’s (a Viognier blend).

GV, how bout a road trip down there for a live show when you’re in AZ next month for the Marketing Profs conference? Live from Callaghan vineyards? It’s about a 2.5 hour trip from Phoenix. I’ll drive you myself, or I can get us a helicopter.

  58. September 10, 2008

When i think about AZ i think about UAT University, a school i am looking at transfering to….

  60. September 10, 2008

    Jason Baer

Also, QOTD: My favorite AZ wine is the 2003 Callaghan Buena Suerte (50% PV, 50% Cab). Been holding a case since release. Decanted and drank one a few months ago for a family celebration. Fantastic.

GV, Callaghan is also making a single varietal PV you should check out. It tastes like black licorice covered with Crest toothpaste. Crazy.

  61. September 10, 2008

    qotd: no.
qqotd: previously it would’ve been the ‘desert swarm’ defense of the UA teams from the late 90’s. now it will likely be TOOL.

  62. September 10, 2008

    Jimmy G

    Happy Birthday Sasha!!

I’ve never had an AZ wine, but I plan on going out there next year and I hope to try one in person. I’m a huge fan of Tool and Maynard James Keenan, however I’ve never had a chance to try his wines. I guess I’m going to have to go check it out.

Great Show! Keep on showing us up and wine coming areas GV!

Been to Arizona many times and didn’t even know they had wine. Always get Margaritas there. Thanks for bringing every state to the front. So where is next, Colorado or Wyoming?

  65. September 10, 2008

    Scrivers

I have been to AZ many times, but I have not tried any wines from there. I can see grapes withering on the vines in the extreme heat of that area, so until this show I had never thought of having wines from that part of the US. Thanks for the show.

  66. September 10, 2008

    Michael Nelson

Gary! When I think of Arizona I think of the sunrise as I drove West on I-8 to San Diego. The red of the desert was amazing until a semi-truck practically sideswiped me. My U-Haul ate it. I have never had an Arizona wine, but I will keep an eye out for it here in SoCal.

Question: How does a region get an “AVA” status that protects it’s name and the growers in that region?

  67. September 10, 2008

    Divya Mistry

QOTD: Never had Arizona wine, and never even been to Arizona. Arizona will be on my radar now. May be after seeing this episode, I’ll be on the look out for some arizona wine love.

  68. September 10, 2008

    BruceErik

Lived in AZ for 7 years and tried a number of wines there. Some of my favorites came from Kokopelli Winery. Their Ratafia, a muscat, is very tasty, and you have to love the “designer” bottle it comes in with the hand-painted scenics and icons.

When I think of Arizona I think of bright sun and blue sky … so common you almost forget there is anything else.

  69. September 11, 2008

    neutron212

QOTD: No and what i think about AZ is the next president of the United States and Tombstone

  70. September 11, 2008

    Jlair

When I hear Arizona I think of the Airplane graveyard and this steakhouse we used to visit every time I would fly in for the night in the Military, i think it was called Pinnacle Pete’s in Tuscan.

Great show Gary. Just to let you know…I was spreading the thunder yesterday to a client of mine. Todays show was probably his first.

  71. September 11, 2008

    RANDI

    Happy Birthday Sasha!!

QOTD: I lived in AZ, and am planning a possible return… I have emailed in the past about AZ Wines…Ive had several and have been pleasantly surprised.
(Ive also tried La Montana and completely agree…way too oaky)

  72. September 11, 2008

    Luke

QOTD: I’ve never had and Arizona wine, but when I think of Arizona I tend to think of Matt Leinart and his epic fail so far in his career.

But I can’t really talk smack when my Chiefs are trying to build up Brodie Croyle as the QB of the future.

  73. September 11, 2008

    Chris in Tulsa

    Happy Bday to your Dad!

QOTD: Never had Arizona wine though next time I visit my family in Arizona, i’ll have to try to find one or two of these places. I’d love to try it.

Arizona makes me think of the brutal heat in the summer. So hot it’s scary.

  76. September 11, 2008

QOTD: Yes. In fact, I started a thread on Sonoita in the Wine Travel forum.

I have been told by a couple of the winemakers that they’re going to start experimenting with malbec in Sonoita. Apparently the conditions are very similar to some of those in Argentina.

At any rate, there are some good wines coming out of that region, and Callaghan is definitely the best. Unfortunately, you do have to pay a bit extra for the cachet of having wine from Arizona.

  79. September 11, 2008

    Hido53

    Great show Gary!
QOTD: Never had any wines from Arizona. Have a bottle of Gruet Rose Bubbly, from New Mexico, in the fridge ready to go. What comes to mind when I think Arizona? . . . well, first of all, I think of the fact that the Cardinals beat our ass this past weekend! (Niner fan). Then I think of the fact that we finished off a sweep of the Diamondbacks today (Giants fan). Then I think . . . hot, hot, hot weather, scorpions, snakes, spiders, and other venom-loaded creatures, cactii, and golf courses!

  80. September 11, 2008

    Ryan

Glad to see it posted after missing it yesterday! Arizona, nice! Not sure I can get Arizona wine around here, but drinking a good Cali Merlot right now, pretty astonished by the complexity here. Wouldn’t mind going on a free cruise!

  81. September 11, 2008

    Nik Skoufis

Great show. QOTD Never been to Arizona or had any of their wines. Never even been to the US as a matter of fact. I’m an Aussie boy. But when I think of a Arizona I think of the Grand Canyon.

  82. September 11, 2008

    Daniel Kloke

QOTD: Neither my wife nor I have experienced an Arizona wine. However, we have driven through Arizona on occasion and the people we met are as warm and friendly as the state (we highly recommend a visit if you haven’t been). Next time, wine tasting is obviously on the schedule.

When I asked Jennifer (my Texan wife) the QOTD, she said “think about the breadth, colors, and warmth of a Texas sunset and bottle it. That’s what I think of when I think of Arizona.” We are fans.

  83. September 11, 2008

    Mr.Ambassador

    Hey GV,

It’s always interesting to hear impressions and tasting notes on wines from states other than the big four. I haven’t sampled a wine made in Arizona yet; if it were being poured for a tasting I’d indulge but I’m not certain that I’d spring for a bottle at this point… When I hear Arizona I think of National Parks, scenery and the regional sport teams (pretty generic answer, I know).

  84. September 11, 2008

    Kent

I was surprise that he mentioned Maynard. I’m a GIGANTIC FAN of Tool, A Perfect Circle, and Puscifer. I would like to see how Gary rates some Caduceus wines that Maynard makes (if he hasn’t already?). I’ve ordered 3 bottles of every Caduceus wine that has been available so far. I’ve drank 2 of each so far but I’m simply too much of an amateur taster to analyze or rate it. To me it just tastes like wine some sweeter, or more dry than others etc… I still have a bottle left of each kind, I’d be more than willing to send them to Gary for him to rate them because I know that most of the Caduceus wine is basically gone.

  85. September 11, 2008

    Peter Seid

QOTD: Born, raised and still living in AZ! Lived 18 yrs in Phoenix, and now I go to school at University of Arizona in Tucson. When I think of AZ, I think of the desert, monsoons, hot summers, nice winters, and incredible sunsets. Never had wine from AZ prob because I don’t drink, but will suggest that my parents try the good ones.

  86. September 11, 2008

    Rob R

Great show, I’ll have to try to find the 4th wine.

QOTD: Coyotes, don’t know why, but that is what first came to mind.

  87. September 11, 2008

    Justin L. Ove

I’m stoked you did a show on Arizona wines because I’m moving there very soon. I’ll have to check out the Callahan winery, hopefully they’ll give me a job!

What are the chances of you bringing Mr. Keenan himself on the show for a tasting of his wines? That would certainly rock, and would probably be really funny. That guy is hilarious!
    Great show, thanks Gary

  88. September 11, 2008

    KVolk

QOTD: nope never had…thought it was to tough of a climate for the grapes…

I think of the Grand Canyon and the painted desert mostly….fun state to visit but I really like the southwest……

  89. September 11, 2008

    theemptyglass

QOTD: I don’t think I’ve had Arizona wine, but I’ve had New Mexican wine, that’s close right? Arizona makes me think of desert and road trips to Mexico (went on many of those as a child). And recently it makes me think of McCain.

  90. September 11, 2008

    Snarf

QOTD: not had an AZ wine. When I think of AZ, I think of visiting my wife’s parents. Not a bad thing.

  91. September 11, 2008

    Hey Gary –

QOTD – Never had an Arizona wine but will take advantage if I come across one!

When I think of AZ, I think red dirt, dry, and Grand Canyon. Would love to take a family trip sometime.

  92. September 11, 2008

    Clintus

    Arizona FTW!!!

So awesome that you did a show on our state. I’ve been meaning to hit up the vineyards on the way to Sedona too. I’ll have to look out for these wines.

Never had an AZ wine! but sure would like to try one.
Am from the Philippines and I’m curious how i can participate with the secret pack tasting, maybe you can send a list to us who can’t buy the pack and try to see if we can source the bottles on our own.
    Do enjoy the show!

Never had AZ wines but I’ll be there next month so I’ll try some when I’m there. In fact I’m flying back that Monday for the super tasting to take you up on that private room tasting offer you made me.

    Looking forward to it.

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY SASHA!!!!!!!!!

Never had any AZ wine. I think mostly of all those beautiful pictures you see of the desert and the cliffs and all that. Oh, and its also home to the Cubs spring training, which is nice.

unfortunate that the secret packs aren’t available to all of us… living in GA (and despite the recent change in laws) I still can’t order from you and am just too far to drive up to say ‘Hi!”….

    sad, is it not?

I haven’t ever had an Arizona wine. I am kind of curious to see what’s going on down there. I’m into the odd wine states, Like Michigan and Ohio.

Honestly… When I think of Arizona I get images of old retired “folk” playing shuffle board. Mainly because half of the Chicago area goes to Arizona to retire.

QOTD: Never had one but of course I would like to try things. Gary, you really have to stop scheduling things when I have previous engagements (that I really wish I could break!). Lucky in family, unlucky in Wine Library events!

    DAve A

    SECRETPACKSAREBACK! yes!

QOTD: never knew a winery was in Arizona. When I think – I think of Canyon De Celly and how neat a place that is to visit. I also think of 114 heat in Phoenix during the summers!

  104. September 11, 2008

You called me at home about a month ago. I’m Erin V’s dad. I had just opened a 2004 Rancho Rossa Syrah (AZ wine) when you called. I wasn’t too impressed with it that night but decided that it might open up if it aired overnight. Next day it was completely different. Huge dark chocolate and it had cooled a lot. (16% alc.) Overall, it was a good effort. I’d go 89+.
I have a 2005 Keeling Shaefer Syrah in the cooler that my wine making buddy says is outstanding. He buys grapes from Keeling and has made some nice wines.
Thanks again for the call. Love the show.

  105. September 11, 2008

Great to see an AZ show! Not only because I live here, but because I’m taking my first tour of southern arizona wineries this weekend, and Callaghan and Dos Cabazas are on the list. Happy birthday, Sasha!

Uh Oh, where was Michelle on that 85 score. Doesn’t she know you are supposed to pan up to the 85 jersey when this happens? Oh well Mott needs a vacation just like the rest of us.

QOTD: Never had one, I think about a story I heard once about it being so hot that one of my aunt’s friend tripped and her skin got stuck to the searing hot pavement. OUCH!

  108. September 11, 2008

    Rob

I’m in for a secret pack – and coincidentally enough, it’s my first WL purchase! Can’t wait to see what you’ve picked out for us!

Cool to see a show on Arizona wines, and good to hear that there is some very worthwhile juice flowing in the big ass canyon state…

QOTD – never had an Arizona wine! I have never seen one offered for sale up here, either. Hopefully that will change. What do I think of when I think “Arizona”? I think of the red rocks, cliffs, and cactus around Sedona, and all of the nouveau hippy-trippy new agers that moved to that area. Although, I must say, the arts, dining, and wine scene in Sedona is very cool. I think it is a very cool area, totally gorgeous, and has a very fun aura around it….. groovy!

    HAPPY B-DAY SASHA!!!

GV – Thanks for bringing out AZ. QOTD – I’ve not had one and when I think of AZ I think of my friend talking about how Swamp Coolers really work down there. Random – I know. I’d love to visit there!

    Happy B-Day Sasha!!

Gary, you need to have Maynard Keenan on the show he seams to be a really cool guy. I’m going to have to try one of his wines.

QOTD: I’ve never had an AZ wine or even been there, but all i think of is lots of sun and cactus.

  120. September 11, 2008

  121. September 11, 2008

Cacti. And Old Town in Tucson. Not much else. It doesn’t seem very habitable for grapes. Maybe a Malbec at the higher altitudes but, I don’t know, too many rattlers!

  122. September 11, 2008

    danseng

Thanks for doing the Arizona show Gary! I told you there was good wine down here.

Since I live here I’ll tell everyone they are right about the heat, the desert, the Canyon, Sedona, golf, etc. But you’d probably be surprised to know that the grape growing region in Southeastern Arizona has a climate similar to the best places in California. No fog and not as much rain, but 90 degree highs and 60 degree lows all summer that make it possible to grow good grapes. Add in great winemakers like Kent Callaghan and you will start to see some great wines from here.

  123. September 11, 2008

QOTD: I haven’t even heard of Arizona wine. I’ve been to Arizona, several times. The best trip was for the 1986-87 Penn State Nittany Lion’s victory over Miami in the Fiesta Bowl. National Championship!!

Never had an Arizona wine. Great show though. Good to see AZ’s potential.

When I think of Arizona, I think of the desert. Went to a Card’s game two years ago (followed the Lions out to AZ to watch them lay an egg). Lots of cactus and sand with towns/cities mixed in. Had a great time. . .weather was great. . . stadium was beautiful, especially how they roll the turf in and out of the dome!

  131. September 11, 2008

    Rob Howells

I have not tried any wines from Arizona but they sound interesting. I picture rattlesnakes and desert when thinking of Arizona.

Happy birthday, Sacha! GV – yer Dad’s same age as my oldest sister. Like you, my first AZ was Callahan, also about ten years ago, Zin, and it was full throttle style w/ deep, jammy fruit. Was good then , but I can’t take fruit bombs anymore… Az? Among many evoked thoughts, I can hardly believe in’t been over 16 years since the huge push for Cave Creek Chili Beer.

QOTD: I have not actually had a 100% AZ wine, but I am about to open a bottle of the 2004 Primer Paso that was Maynard James Keenan’s first wine. He blended a little bit of AZ Malvasia into the Shiraz. It’s been close to two years since I had this wine last. So I am very excited to be trying this again. Sadly it is my last bottle.

QOTD: When I think about Arizona I think about a place that’s entirely too hot to live! Whether you’re a human or a grape, it’s not natural for things like these to live there with out piping in water from places like Oregon, so what’s the point??

I have a magazine and website about Arizona wines and am happy to see you reviewing them. Yes, we are a new and growing region with some hits and misses. The Keeling-Schaefer that was tasted was from their first real harvest. Their Syrah is very awesome! Also, if you want to try some more great AZ wines, try Pillsbury Wine Co. or Arizona Stronghold (100% AZ grapes). The rest of the vineyards are working into 100% AZ grapes and there are some real strong contenders. Again, thanks for getting the word out – we can only get better from here. More info at http://www.ArizonaVinesAndWines.com.

I have had a number of AZ wines, the Verde Valley area is starting to take off with new wineries around Page Springs. Most of the wines I have had are the sweeter varieties from Kokopelli I wasn’t a fan, but considering how the barrels of Page Springs impacted a beer brewed and aged in them by Oak Creek brewing I have confidence growing.

I think that you should track the different states or regions that appear on your show and have rankings, based on an average of the wines on that show. I think that Arizona would be in the #1 slot. That island in Canada would probably be in last. You could post the rankings on a board behind your table when you do one of these shows. It would really add some more competition to the fun.

    Gary,

May I suggest that you experiment and change your stemware? I have noticed that you use the same glasses for Chards, Zins, Cabs etc. Yet, the stemware can have a huge impact on how you perceive a wine. Don’t believe me? Try a Chardonnay in a Riedel Montrachet No. Ref. 416/97 glass and then try it in a Riedel Bordeaux Ref. No. 416/0 glass. May I suggest you do a side by side comparrison of the same wine in different glasses on your show? I have has the same Cab in a typical winery tasting room glass which tasted like it had the “Oak Monster” and then had it in a Riedel Bordeaux glass and it then seemed to bring the wine into balance and rightly display its fruit qualities.

    Ciao!

QOTD – while not truly an AZ wine yet (fruit is from Cali) I have had the Caduceus (Maynard Keenan’s wine) viognier/shiraz blend, which was a knockout (and about $40). I have a bottle of that super tuscan like blend of his in the cellar here, still waiting to pop it. Can’t wait to try it, just haven’t had the right occassion. Looking forward to trying his AZ fruit wines when they are ready, but I think it’ll still be a few years.

QOTD: I never had an Arizona wine but I always remember going to Compton Terrace to see concerts. It was a pretty cool place to see a show. I also had the pleasure of the seeing the Phoenix Lights back in 1996 which is a well documented UFO sighting.

QOTD: I’ve never had an Arizona wine. What do I think about it? Well, if Arizona can produce interesting well-made wine, go for it. And if Wine Library sells it, I might buy some. I would definitely try the Calahan – it sounds like my kind of wine.

Was in Arizona last year, went to Sedona for a couple of those days and visited several tasting rooms that only serve AZ wines, reds were good, brought some home..they need to come down on price some to ever buy again.

I think you should hop on a plane, there’s some great stuff going on in the AZ wine industry. Take a ride in our WINOBAGO and we can share it all with you!

One of the best wines I’ve enjoyed was a late picked wine in the late 90’s made by Callaghan. Kent, would love to taste a similar one again.

I live here and have not tried an AZ wine, how embarrassing. When I think about AZ I think it is a wonderful place to live.

One of my favorite wines that i always have a bottle in the fridge is Gruet Blanc de Noirs – a steal for such a delicious sparkler. But I haven’t had any still AZ wines yet.
QOTD: Party schools and New Age strangeness. Not a fair or balanced picture for sure.

Great show Gary. I have never tried a wine from Arizona, but I am going there next week so I’m certainly going to seek some out.

Oh yikes I missed your open house last Saturday. Well, I attended the last one and you were a very gracious host and your whole family was so nice. I drank too much and probably uttered a few questionable blatherings.
QOTD: I went to AZ on a business trip years ago and visited a cactus, I dunno, farm and a co-worker took a pic of me that looked like a cactus was growing out of my head. Well, you asked, and that’s the answer.

Happy late birthday to your father. A great man ( far greater than you ;) ) and I wish him the best over and over. QOTD: Never had one, and when I think of Arizona I think of my friend Alisha, heat, and those no good Cardinals. Pwned in the Super Bowl 31-13, and the Seahawks reclaim the divison. OH YEAHHHHH!!! ( Macho Man style )

QOTD: My old man lives in Tucson so I think of the Sonoran Desert (Saguaro cactus, roadrunners, quail, coyotes). Has anyone ever seen a Javalina? Those things are so weird!!! Its kind of like a desert pig but its from a different family. The official name is “Collared Peccory”.

Have not tried an Arizona wine but I plan to.
