I hope I can stop drooling so I don’t ruin my computer before I finish watching, that is a great lineup of beers.

Wow, that’s a nice dainty hand on Michelle. ;-) Hey Gary, we have to look at Mott’s mug every once in a while, why not the “new” camera woman? Is Michelle single? ;-) j/k…

I have a bottle of the Speedway Stout at home that I may open tonight… This was an interesting episode, even though I’m really not “into” beer (though I do appreciate a good one every once in a while).

Definitely Root Beer is the way to go… I crave a good root beer!

QOTD: Does it have to be a beer I’m sharing with the person living or dead? If so, perhaps just my buddy Mike.. the only guy I still talk to from high school, he’s reviewed like 4000 beers on ratebeer.com, so he definitely is fun to talk to about beer.

Love to share a beer again with my Dad but can’t happen now. My two sons are beer heads. They go to tastings

Wow, I’ve been watching for a few months now, but this is my first time commenting and it’s all because of the amazing QOTD

First off, I love the show and it has been encouraging me to expand my palate in every area (most notably in the area of coffee, actually). Technically I’m not 21 yet, so as far as wine (and beer, in this episode) goes I’m just prepping my palate for the next few months.

QOTD: I’ve always thought that writers are some of the most interesting people to talk to, so if I base my decision on that I’d have to say that I’d either choose W. Somerset Maugham (early to mid 20th century British author) or Ernest Hemmingway would be who I’d choose.

Keep up the good work Gary!

If you want a good beer try the extreme bees from Flying Dog Brewery like GONZO

Great show guys, Beer TV rules.

QOTD: I think Napoleon would prefer a good cognac, so I’d go with Ben Franklin. He’d probably have some French ladies hanging around too.

Not a beer drinker (can’t handle the calories) but interesting show nonetheless.

QOTD: I had to think about this for a while. This is probably wierd and generational but I really think that I would have liked to share a beer with the actor Jimmy Stewart. He always came accross as very genuine and approachable. A lot like you, Gary.

Great show! One of my favorites, this beer guy should get his own show!

  17. September 11, 2008

    Jay

Two things: 1) Awesome show. The beer shows are always a great change of pace. 2) A double IPA does not mean that it’s fermented twice. It means that there are more hops and more barley used in the production which leads to a bigger hop profile and more alcohol.

QOTD: Good question. I’d probably have to say Richie Sexson. :) I think he needs one after this season.

With regards to the double IPA, both your guest and Jay aren’t (completely) correct. The definition Jay gives is what was traditionally meant by the term “Imperial” in Europe (so it’d be an Imperial IPA in this case). Two rounds of fermentation is a Belgian trick present in their “Dubbel.” The use of the term “double” in the US in beer names is sort of a shot in the dark as to what it means, as it hasn’t really been used consistently to mean any single thing. Conveniently, both double-fermentation and doubling the hop or grain bill of a beer will result in a big-ass brew if done with skill, therefore, for the consumer, double really just means “big,” “bold” or “booya.”

QOTD: Probably Maurice Merleau-Ponty, though my good friend Adam would be a close second.

  24. September 11, 2008

Beer? Well, occasionally it’s ok. I like that you use separate glasses. Dump and rise makes me sad! smile.

QOTD: at the beach, just at dusk, with Sarah Palin.

You got to try Oregon beer….Rouge Brewery “dead guy ale” and Deschutes Brewery “hop trip ale” (seasonal) or the Mirror Pond, share a beer with anyone, that appreciates good beer, no piss water

    Gary -

Need to find some Speedway Stout! Saw on their webpage that they actually add coffee to the brew. Very interesting.

Would love to see a show on ROOT BEER! With all the references to it, I don’t think there’s ever been an episode devoted to it!

QOTD: Tough one . . . geez, this is harder than I thought it would be . . . would want it to be fun, not so serious . . . climbing into the time machine and travelling 16 years into the future and I’m having a beer with my two sons . . .

  27. September 11, 2008

    Rick D

Fun show on beer. I used to be heavily into homebrewing and beer judging. Still drink a little beer, but I have become a vino fan. I can’t handle the carbonation like I used to. Some of your beer facts were off the mark, but it was great to see Bret passionate about beer like I use to be.

QOTD: My old high school friend, Dave C, who was killed in Vietnam.

  28. September 11, 2008

QOTD: I think I’d like to have a Budweiser with Carlos Brito –Chief exec with Inbev. …And then punch him in the face.

QOTD: I think I would like to have a beer with Tiger Woods or to go another direction Albert Einstein…..

Great show GV and a great guest too…..I really buy into the whole wine beer world merging they both are everyday beverages that really enhance food and company…..

I don’t really like the taste of most beers, save Belgians. I absolutely love Chimay, Rochefort, and Orvel and all of the beers they produce. Many beers made in the Belgian style (Victory’s Golden Monkey, most of the Unibroue line) are also very nice.

I can’t handle most of the cheapo beers (Bud, Coors, etc.) as they literally taste like water with a tiny bit of taste (to me).

A Pats fan! Good gosh. You need to do a background check next time. Good show though since I do like crafted beers and I’ve read they pair better with food than wine. It would be hard to convince me of that fact but interesting nonetheless.

QOTD: I ask this question all the time, albeit a glass of wine, at any gathering where the talk finally gets away from kids and soccer to more “cerebral” conversation. My answer for a glass of wine would be Thos Jefferson. Of course, it would be a Bordeaux. A glass of beer?

Answer: Sarah Palin after a moose hunt in the Alaska wilderness. :)

    Go Jets!!!!! Spank the Pats

Hey Gary, This was excellent show. I am a long time Wine guy with a WSET certification to boot and I was impressed with the content and knowledge of your guest. Great Beers. BTW- Try Stone Brewing Co -EPIC. A Master crafted Ale made only once a year on a crazy date. This years release was 08-08-08. Next year it wil 09-09-09. Best beer I evert had. Hats off to Craft Brewing!

  34. September 11, 2008

    Steve

Gary, it kills me, seems like every time you have a guest on your show, you turn to them and say something like, “Go ahead and introduce yourself,” and you ALWAYS (it seems to me) interrupt them before they speak two words. And you did it again with the Pats beer guy. I think you did it to the chick in Cleveland at the stadium. Dude, I love your blather, but when you turn it over to someone, PLEASE shut your pie hole for 30 seconds!

But I’m still tuning in, love your show!

Great show! I love my cereal and my hops…lots of hops…green and bitter.

I think at heart I’m a bit of an Epicurean. I’d love to have a drink with Dionysius or Bacchus or Epicurus or any great life-loving individual, either alive or beyond.

Good show, but a pats fan!? Prolly a redsox, bruins, celtics fan as well. Can’t abide by that.

QOTD: Manny Ramirez, and we’d rap, among other important topics of the day, about how much he disliked boston fans.

  40. September 11, 2008

    Argyle Alec

QOTD: You Brett! You had 2 of my favorite beers on there which you left for me to taste!! You’re awesome thanks guy!! and if not Brett than Garrett Oliver of Brooklyn Brewery.

    manonthemoon

Great show, who cares what Brandon M might say, you need to do more of these. I recommend anything from North Coast Brewery or Ola Dubah.

QOTD: Would have to be Sun Tzu, would love to pick that guy’s brain.

  42. September 11, 2008

    Mike S.

Gary – time to start Beer Library TV, even if it’s only a couple of episodes a week. I’m a winehead, but my CKC’s have got me deeply into craft brews, and they enjoy your show.

QOTD: locally available Weyerbacher Double Simcoe IPA (Easton, PA). Incredible, and you don’t have to go to California to find it.

  43. September 11, 2008

    Aaron_J

    Yet another great wep, GV.

I just had a Speedway Stout last weekend. It was absolutely wonderful. I don’t know how you guys didn’t mention coffee, though I will concede the Tootsie Roll note. Looking forward to the root beer.

AOTD: I’d love to have a good beer with Dave Matthews.

  44. September 11, 2008

    Phil G

    Nice… beer is good.

QOTD – There are a bunch of historical folks, like Einstein or Jefferson – but I’ll go personal and say my Dad.

  45. September 11, 2008

    Indigo

Great show… more beer shows please. There are so MANY craft beers now available, you can definitely spend more time on it.

QOTD: My Grandfather (Dad’s side), he passed away when I was 6. He loved to drink beer and I have like a thousand questions to ask him.

  48. September 11, 2008

I have never really been into beer, but as I become a more serious wine drinker I find myself enjoying beer much more!

QOTD: My dad for sure (who died when I was very young)

  49. September 11, 2008

Nice episode. Enjoyed all the beers. QOTD: I’d share a Speedway stout with my husband.

  54. September 11, 2008

I love beer and there are so many awesomes coming out of nor Cal and Oregon (my old stomping ground).

QOTD: I’d share the beer with “Lucy”, my favorite human-like hominid.

  55. September 11, 2008

on teh beer website i frequent, this show catches a lot of flack, but personally i think it is well done. Good job, keep it up.

  56. September 11, 2008

    Barclay

Great show…I was into wine at first…then beer…then wine again. This motivates me to seek out some of these beers. Yet another example GV (correctly AND respectfully) pointing out the dangers of overly defining yourself.

QOTD: My dad, who I lost many years ago.

  57. September 11, 2008

    Jeff Louella

Double IPA is higher in alchohol and therefore uses more hops to balance it. Check out the BJCP.org for info on styles and histories of styles. Interesting stuff. I make both wine and beer at home and am amazed of what can be made in both fields.

  58. September 11, 2008

    bdshupe

Great to see the beer show. I agree with Brett that this show has helped me expand my palate. Not only by getting me to drink different craft beers, but trying to get into wine.

This change has suited me well. Tonight I went to a dinner and there was a wine tasting with every course. It was great to smell and taste the wine and have some sense [albeit little] of what I was doing. Thanks for the show! I’ve finally decided to delurk myself since I actually have something constructive to add.

QOTD: It’s not just one person, but I’d like to go back home from my college town and have a beer with my friends that I’ve not seen for a while. I can see it happening within the next month or so.

  59. September 11, 2008

awsome show gotta love the beer. QOTD: i like to have my new fave beer a stout by Hooks and Ladders and id like to have it with Jim Morrison that would be a trip (no pun intended)

  60. September 11, 2008

Great show! Always interested n the beer world.

QOTD: Roger Federer, get some good tennis tips and stories.

  61. September 12, 2008

Great Beer show. I’m salivating at the thought of trying these. how about setting up “not so secret packs” of the beers/wines you try in a show.

QOTD:Liz Hurley just because she’s gorgeous, or probably Ronald Reagan since he was such a great leader and a sharp wit.

  62. September 12, 2008

    Robin C

QOTD: I’d have a beer with Bob Dylan.

  63. September 12, 2008

    John Taylor

If I could share a beer with anyone alive or dead it would be Benjamin Franklin, since he was one of contry’s great cofounders and a lover of beer.

  64. September 12, 2008

    brorjace

    QOTD:Ben Franklin

One of the post corrected your guests, Double IPA’s and Triple IPA are brewed longer and have higher alcohol and are always hoppier than regular IPAs. And the first beer should be much more affordable, in Illinois its around 6-7 bucks. Great show, I love beer, and wine (and whiskey)! Keep it up!

  65. September 12, 2008

    Dustin from OR

    The Adam Bomb

That’s just how my week goes, “beer, wine, root beer.”

Speaking of wine and beer collaborations, DeuS, from Brewery Bosteels, is a beer brewed in Belgium, aged for two months, then sent to Champagne to be re-fermented with Champagne yeast. It makes for a very interesting glass. I HIGHLY recommend it for your next Beer Library TV.

QOTD: Hildegard and Bas van Ostaden, the two heads behind Urthel Brewery. They make perhaps the best Tripel I’ve ever tasted.

  67. September 12, 2008

QOTD: I’d have to agree with Yvette W and say Roger Federer, just because he’s so awesome. I think Shakespeare would be pretty cool too, although neither of these men strike me as beer drinkers. But you never know, right?

  76. September 12, 2008

    CrazyManAndy

Great show! Really loving the guests lately. This guy rocks! As a massive fan of all things Pearl Jam, his analogy just floored me!

The beer looked really great. QOTD: I was thinking of some famous or historical folks…but it’s too hard to choose, so I’m gonna go with my family. My brothers, sister, and parents. Just hangin’ out on the porch/patio, with the charcoal grill and some steaks or a pork shoulder…or both!

The average American doesn’t care about craft beer, they care about price. And to break it down more, from what I’ve noticed, it’s all about quantity. Which, in my opinion, is what has given beer a bad reputation. Now don’t get me wrong, I like beer. It’s not quite vino, but I like it. But, when I’m the only Fat Tire drinker surrounded by bud light, something’s wrong. Another issue I’ve observed is the “sticking to my guns” theory. Which is lame, how boring does it get drinking the same thing day in and day out? And just because it’s on television doesn’t mean it’s actually a good beer. Good to see the breaking down of stereotypes.

Speaking of good beers, I’m going to “link it up!”

Thanks GV and Brett. I really hope you add BeerTV to your lineup. Good stuff and very good tasting notes. You hit the nail on the head on all 4 beers.

  82. September 12, 2008

    Richard

Good show, however I find myself more and more gravitating towards wine as a preference. The beer shows are feeling a little dull for me these days.

I share beer with such good friends and family as it is, I find it hard to try to pick somebody outside that circle… probably some great Christian thinker.

  83. September 12, 2008

    John

Great and interesting show. I am a Sport Bar beer and wings guy but will now expand my palette and try the double IPA.

With the Hurricane nearing Houston, I wanted to get my NFL Survivor pick in early in case I am offline for a while.

1 – 0 after the Giants pick last week. Week 2 I select Green Bay over Detroit.

Great show. Thanks for mixing in beer once in a while.

  85. September 12, 2008

    Merrill

I’ve been waiting for this for a while! Great show – there are hundreds of beers worth discussing in a very complex “beer world/culture. Gary is right on finding the links (or making the links on the spot – like dragging kicking and screaming) between the beer world and wine land. It’s two ancient continents smashing together.
Sitting down with one person it would be Adam or maybe Eileen, but I’d rather get maybe all the founding fathers (and mothers) together and drink a couple kegs of Three Floyds Alpha King or DFH World Wide Stout – or both!

GV – Great show. Don’t forget to come to NERAX in March. I’ll email you again about it! QOTD – I’d have a beer with Charlie Rose (he loves wine too!) or David Crosby (the best stories about musicians) – and my Dad!

With all the Oktoberfests about to start springing up, this a great topic to cover.

The good thing about the craft beers, to me, is that they’re not made to slam down and are almost impossible to do so given their structure and body.

  97. September 12, 2008

    Murso

Great picks, good job, Bret. As a wine pro, and a cyclist, I slake my thirst on beer – slugging a big stein of wine ain’t a very good program… Like Alesmith, have liked Cantillon, love Avery.
QOTD – I have one annual ritual/birthday wish, with an early summer birthday. That is to have a good beer and a hamburger with my Mom and Dad, whom I love very much. It is their love which has made my entire life possible, and I celebrate family and love on that day for as long as God will allow.

This was your best beer show. I fall somewhere between the Bud Lite crowd and the beer snobs. I had no interest in some of those fruit flavored beers you’ve done in the past. Here you do things like stout and IPA, things that a beer drinker might actually want to try.

QOTD: Of course my late father. He and I shared many a bottle of wine. His beer drinking days were mostly before I reached 21. But even though the answer is clear, it’s fun to think of names of people you’d like to spend some time and have some beers with. Here are some: Edward O. Wilson, Lao Tzu, Benjamin Franklin, Archimedes, Jimmy Durante and Louis Armstrong.

another great show. I just had my first traditional-style lambic and I loved it. i don’t know much about beer, but I thought IPA had to do with the amount of hops put into the beer (as the high amount of hops would help to preserve beers that were shipped by boat to India).
qotd: without thinking for too long, I’ll say Dennis Kucinich.

    Great show guys!

QOTD: I would definitely have a beer with my grandfather, my mother’s father, who I never had the chance to know, as he died in 1971, seven years before I was born. I heard through stories that he was a great person.

QOTD : My best man, saw him last week after many years. Was great to see him and have some brews.

I.P.A. – we never relly got the story. India (not indian) Pale Ale was originally brewed in the UK, with extra hops, and more alcohol, to help it to keep, on the long journeys to the colonies in India, hence the name. THe extra hops of course is responsible for the bittersweet symphony they so often deliver. MY favourite type of ber.

I’ve been lurking for about a year now. You really brought the Thunder in this episode, Brett too. I won’t go into how much Thunder I thought it brought but real top notch stuff Gary, favourite episode ever.

I really hope the wine community will one day give beer its due. However I hope to never spend more then 50 bones a bottle for the stuff.

Great Show, love beer esp. the stuff that is not found at your local Mega Super Mart. We are lucky here in Rochester to have a couple of great taphouses that carry a vast selection. Anything that is a cask beer is worth a try.

QOTD – I am very happy sharing a pint with anyone that will have a good chat, but if I could pick someone would have to say Simon Pegg.

Good Beer TV episode Gary & Brett!
I started with wine years ago then in 1985, met a friend in the beer/publican business with 50 beers on tap, it was her passion for microbrewed beers that also became mine.
After finding your show and enjoying your relaxed but serious attitude about wine, I’ve started coming back to wine. Enjoying Rosemblum 2003 Rockpile Syrah & 2004 Maggies Reserve Zin.

BUT I have to take umberage with your statement about, only the seasonal nature of wines.
All of us know in the beer world, one of the most pleasing things about beer is the anticipation of seasonal beers/ales, that we can look forward to all year round.

    Jan.- Feb.: Barleywines
March – May: Bock & Miabock
June – Aug.: Wheat beer/Pilsner/Kölsch style beers
    Sept.: Harvest Fresh Hop Ales(http://www.sierranevada.com/beers/harvest_series.html)
    Sept. – Oct.: Octoberfest/Marzen Lagers
Nov. – Dec.: Winter/Christmas Strong Ales & Stouts
    (http://www.anchorbrewing.com/beers/christmasale.htm)

Also more interesting/inventive beers -Pumpkin Ale for Thanksgiving,
Fruit beers for summer refreshers-Watermelon Wheat-Raspberry Brown,Coconut Porter. IPA, Double IPA, ESB, Rye Beers.
And that’s not even touching on the renewed interest in the complex flavors of Belgium beer styles made here and abroad.
Not to mention some beers pair better with cheese and chocolate then most wines.

Not all of us Beer Geeks drink the same bland beer day after day, most of us actually enjoy the vast amounts of different flavor profiles that the microbrew revolution has brought us the last 20 years. Visit your local brewpub and discover a world of complex flavors, you may not have known existed.
Well all that said, I guess I am a lurker know more.

My dad! He clipped out a newspaper article about the rarest beer in the world – The abbey of Saint Sixtus of Westvleteren. So, me being a person who doesn’t think that anything in not for sale; found it on EBAY! Bought a 6-pack for $40 (outrageous for the common man!). Was able to share a couple of bottles with him; and, man, was it GOOD!!!!

I still have 3 bottles, saving them for a special occassion!

But, seriously, you should do a show on Belgium beers! There are plenty of good ones out there and affordable to do a show!

    Peace out,

    Paul

I think that craft beers are starting to get their seats at the ‘white table cloth’ restaurants; not in the numbers that I’d like to see, but they’re getting more and more prominent.

I participated in a “Head to Head” beer vs. wine dinner at a local brewery. I chose and poured the wines and the Brew Master chose the beers. 7 courses with 7 beers pitted against 7 wines. The diners had to choose their favorite for each course. I was bit disappointed because the beers won by a small margin, but I did realize that I was in a brewery and many of the attendees were beer fanatics.

    Ilse-Belgian and proud of it

A nice show, Gary & Brett…always glad when seeing people who know there’s beer (type Bud) and BEER (the real stuff) and who can appreciate it! My favourite beer is Belgian of course, the Rochefort 8 or 10, but over Summer I prefer a “bolleke” (=de koninck) or a “palmke”…as I live in Spain, I buy some crates of these beers in Belgium and take them with me when driving back after Xmas.
Just a comment for Brett : the lambiks are made in Brussels and west of it, in Pajottenland (Cantillon is almost in the centre of Brussels, but some nice ones like Boon and Drie Fonteinen are in Pajottenland-region…not south of Brussels, as you said.
QOTD : with Larry Bird or Karl Malone (being a great basketball fan), with Stevie Winwood or Warren Haynes (over a nice music conversation) or just with anyone who can enjoy beer!

Hi Gary, So glad to see you doing Beer. At a tasting last Fall in Minnesota I met this Belgian Guy, Johnny, who is an incredible storyteller. He introduced all these delicious tasting Belgian Beers-Piraat, Gulden Draak, Bruegel, Borem, Troubadour and Wittekerke to name a few. They call them Living Beers. The flavors are explosive.

I think you should sit down with this Johnny. Talk about PASSION, he’s insane, just like you. He tells about recipes from Monks of 1295. Thanks for doing beer. Would love to see Beer Library. Cheers. Joseph
