QOTD – as a musician, I have been lucky enough to play in front of some large crowds. certainly a lot of fun!

I love you Gary, you know that, but this wasn’t one of my favorite episodes for some reason. Maybe it was the mic or something. Maybe it was the stage. You know what – it’s coming through… No Jets bucket. That has to be it.

Props for passing out the wine. “Try new stuff!” Word.

  13. September 25, 2008

    jason

what was that? what is happening to this world? people gathered to watch a guy taste wine on stage like and then take pics of him….. weird

qotd- my first opening when 500 people arrived WOWOWOOOW. i had one too many glasses of vino

Well too bad you will be in Miami. I am putting together interactive harvest stream that starts next week with the winemaker and vineyard manager for Q&A. Hopefully after we integrate TalkShoe and Ustream we’ll have some rad peeps to talk to.

QOTD: Maybe a handful of little kids, but that’s the oldest group of boisterous crowd I’ve ever had listen (or not listen) to me. By the way, you’d be proud of all the new wines I’ve been trying!

I have to say, being on stage in front of a large number of people is very exhilarating. I’m a musician and it’s a different experience for me every time.

QOTD: recently did a run of Godspell at my church for a nightly crowd of about 400-500 peeps! Not bad for a group of amateurs…. THAT’S bringing the THUNDER!!

Love the live shows Gary… and I don’t like Pepper Johnson….

Ronnie Brown, on the other hand…

    Chippewamike

QOTD: How many were watching and how many were not (alot of background talkers)? I am guessing a LARGE number, so no, I have not had that many stop and watch me do anything (which might be a good thing ;) )

  23. September 25, 2008

    Withnail

QOTD: All the time (I perform standup regularly in front of 200+).
Sounds like you were talking over a lot of ambient noise/chatter,
    which is no fun.

  24. September 25, 2008

    sharon

    qotd: never ever.
How about tasting some “available” wines? It’s always fun to see what you’re talking about.

Trying to get back into the WLTV groove after so long away….this felt like a strange episode to start with – all the weird echos, dark ambience etc!

Not sure about the sheep-butt exploding in your mouth though!

QOTD – Maybe not as many peeps, but a fair few were reading my Pesquie Diary over the last week and a half.

  26. September 25, 2008

    CD

Stay true to yourself Gary. Don’t push the show too far, too high, too loud. Too much is to much.
Also, it seemed to me that it was not the best conditions to taste wine.

  27. September 25, 2008

    TimInSpokane

Damn, Gary! Was that crowd drunk? They sure were a loud bunch! Cool show on the pinots, and a huge shout out to the fine folks at C. Donatiello, especially Robert Conard, that awesome tasting room/visitor center manager guru! Robert buddy – congrats to all on a nice review from Gary Vay-ner-chuk, and we will all be sure to ignore all of the pukes (ummmm sorry), make that so-called expert reviewers, who forget to spit out their TicTac’s before they review remarkable wines. (No, I am not talking about Gary here!!!)

QOTD – I am a musician by nature, jazz and big band mostly, and our audiences are much quieter and more polite during our shows, except at the end, when they shower us with applause, adulation, adoration, cash, panties, and the occasional overripe vegetable….. cheeres!

  28. September 25, 2008

    manonthemoon

Meh show, not really a vaynernation type IMO.

QOTD: Only had a few dozen at work meetings and seminars. Of course if we are including group activities than hundreds from my high school playing days.

  29. September 25, 2008

    Derek F.

Awesome show Gary…man you were pumped!!!

Can’t believe you brought up “sheep butt” again, Damm you Vaynerchuk!!

    Dr T from N. Carolina

Wow — sounds like few there were listening! as for QOTD — my record would be around 180

  31. September 25, 2008

    Jay

Kind of strange. It’s probably just because there were so many people, but it didn’t sound like anyone was even paying attention.

  32. September 25, 2008

    italianwinelover

Love live shows…lots of activity in the background though??…but certainly different! Goes to show – you bring the thunder where ever you go!

QOTD: Not as many but I have had a few crowds listen to me ramble about wine! alot of fun when it happened!

  33. September 25, 2008

    Chris

Do you always drink tough-juice when you do live shows? You seem really tough and forceful with the crowd.

  34. September 25, 2008

    Gary,
Tell me how my San Diego Chargers ASS taste!

  35. September 25, 2008

QOTD: You are messing with the forces of nature, Mr. Beal.

  36. September 25, 2008

    jaredlevy

idk gary, you were brining some serious thunder in this episode…the crowd seemed a little rude though (they’re all talking in the background!)

then again, idk how many people were actually in the audience so it could’ve been like 10 people out of 10,000 talking and then this comment is moot.

    awesome show…as usual.

  37. September 25, 2008

    Kirk

QOTD: I have been lucky enough to be in those situations…it is very humbling.

  38. September 25, 2008

Sounds like a pretty busy crowd! Keep doing what you do Gary!

  39. September 25, 2008

    brorjace

Maybe it was just me, but it seemed like everyone was yapping the whole time you were talking. Not a focused crowd at all. And I’ve never been a part of something that big, so I’ll have to wait to tell you!

  40. September 25, 2008

    Dominus

Whooooaaaa Nelly! A tad over the top for me on a quiet Thurs night with a big storm coming up the East Coast. That being said, good reviews on the Pinots. I’ll need to procur some of Pinot #2.

QOTD: You’re kidding right? I’m lucky enough to have the Dominette listen to two words I have to say about wine or any other subject for that matter.

You go my man. I live my star studded fantasy through you.

    Cheers!

  41. September 25, 2008

Good show. Thought you were going to collapse at the end of that one ;) .

  42. September 25, 2008

    AbsolutLahmi

I’m not really into the ‘live crowd’ shows to be honest. Tasting WITH the crowd also seems to work better. Gary – maybe working with a (much smaller) live audience IN THE STUDIO might be a more sound option for the future of the show!

QOTD: Yes, when i sang live with a live karaoke band this summer!

  43. September 25, 2008

    aaronb

    QOTD: No.

  44. September 25, 2008

    Fun stuff. Wine convention?

  45. September 25, 2008

    Lisa de Bruin

I was there…1,100+ people…very happy, excited Web 2.0 + consumers in the crowd…a LIVE Twitter Taste going on as well, 40+ HD videos, it was BUSY. Gary’s contribution was essential to the Wine 2.0 (www.winetwo.com) event and to the progress, next generation of all things wine. ROCK it Gary! I think the crowd DID pay attention …it was twice as loud before he started.

Don’t miss the next one in SF: March/April 2009

  46. September 25, 2008

    Pete G

Loved the wines, not that crowd. Sounded like you were at a banker’s convention. Was anyone there actually listening or were they all bullshitting about a bunch of nonsense. Stick with the smaller wine enthusiast venues.

On a lighter note, had the C Donatiello Pinot at the Saratoga Food/Wine Fest earlier this month and it rocked my face off. Glad to see you agree.

  47. September 25, 2008

    Dewey

    Gary,

My name is Dewey and I am a recovering Lurker.LOL I have lurked your vlog for about a year now and finally made the jump. Man it feals good to not have that stress of you randomly calling me out in the middle of an episode. ahhh!
QOTD: No,I haven’t had the opprotunity to do that yet,but I’m hustlin’ so very soon.

  48. September 25, 2008

    Drew

Pumped and passionate as always…unfortunately, the venue had too much of a House of Blues on the nose…no matter the greatness onstage, too much yakking at the bar.

  49. September 25, 2008

    Slushpuppy

Judging from the constant background chatter, except maybe for the closest people, nobody was paying attention to you my lord. I’m sure most of them were probably bombed; tough house to work no doubt.
    Smell it first!

  50. September 25, 2008

    Marshall

88 pts is way too generous for that Veramonte pinot. However, you definetly have proven your talents as a public speaker. Maybe you should run for president instead of the two clowns everybody will be voting for.

  51. September 25, 2008

    RANDI

    GARY!!!
OMG!!! I remember Webster Hall!!!!! LOLOL
You seem pumped! Different than usual..in a webstery hallish way! LOL
QOTD: YES!!!!!! But Im not gonna tell you what I was doing!
    :)

  52. September 25, 2008

    Nicholas Lazarus

QOTD: Kind of. But certainly didn’t have anything to do with wine.

The clamor of the crowd was a bit distracting. Going to have to give that envoirnment a PAZZ. But you were pumped, and that’s always cool.

  53. September 25, 2008

    Anthony L.

Gary, didn’t like this episode. You seemed to rushing, talking the fastest I’ve ever seen and yelling into the mic. Though I do like hearing the reaction of the a live audience, just not feeling it in this episode.

  54. September 25, 2008

    Rowland

Yea, way to hate on those f*@#g pats yo, they are dirty dirty yo, mad dirty dirty!

on an interesting note, after picking my first 40 bushels of wine grapes, im kinda thinking that when you smell “forest floor” in a wine, its cause the grapes hit the vineyard floor. i cant imagine how much of the sediment that will eventually settle out of this wine is going to be pure dirt lol.

  55. September 25, 2008

    Rowland

Yo Anthony L. just watch it again and its 2x as long, duh, get with the program!

  58. September 25, 2008

man you looked scary as hell with that lighting. Kind of reminded me more of some old school wwf smack talking type interview with the lighting and the tone of the thing

  59. September 26, 2008

    Lawrence Leichtman

I’m sure you had fun with this but it wasn’t much of an episode of WLTV. The constant sound of the crowd would have been good if you were there but not so good online. Really didn’t recognize what you were tasting at all.

  60. September 26, 2008

    Paul V

    great show gary, as always.
QOTD: once. a long time ago.

Sorry about the Jets loss to the Bolts.

  61. September 26, 2008

    NY Pete

Hey Mott … WTF … you cut short all the rowdy applause at the end of the show …and FWIW, I concur, the Donatiello Pinot rocked the house!

  62. September 26, 2008

    Hido53

    Gary -

Okay episode. Actually much prefer the episodes you shoot in your office (both at the round table and the laid-back couch). Unfortunately, I’ve come to find that the live shoots just don’t cut it for me. Just my humble opinion. They’re usually shorter with not as much thoughtful descriptions or background info. Sound and image quality suffers. The background chatter that can occur with these situations seems to just dilute the message. I can only speak for myself, but I watch WLTV to not just be entertained, but to be informed, educated, and at times, inspired (to expand my palate).
QOTD: No, I have never experienced that type of situation.

  63. September 26, 2008

    mike l

ive seen every single episode and rarely leave comments. ill just say that your wine based episodes lately are excellent. i love how honest youre being about the wines and pretty tight with the scoring, really classy. could do without the beer and cheese and whiskey and all that and have come to really dislike the guests, but when you just take on straight wine head on youre rivaling the best.

as for veramonte i just wanted to say that the $1.99 2004 veramonte chard they have at grocery outlet near me is a great value and i bought a couple cases of it. love the values that come out of south america and hope youll do more on that in the future.

remember when winelibrary.com used to have free shipping offers.. sigh those were the days…. now back to lurking.

  64. September 26, 2008

    Eliot (in the Lou)

I hate to say it GV, but I agree with Hido. We get GV energy cranked up to a deafening and distorted level on some of these. It’s awesome to see how energized the crowd gets you, but the content isn’t quite as good. It’s all good, I just don’t expect as much from the live audience shows…

QOTD: I once gave a lecture on disaster management and the evacuation of my hospital in New Orleans to about a thousand people… pretty freaking overwhelming! And now that I think about it, it’s hard NOT to go over the top when you’re trying to keep the attention of that many people – I’m sure I did!

  65. September 26, 2008

    BobbyTiger

My god Gary……………..you call that a glass?
Tough crowd bro. Sounded like you were in the mall at Christmas time.

  66. September 26, 2008

    Justin L. Ove

That was entertaining. I like it when you do shows in front of a crowd. I always want to see the audience though. Maybe Mott could do a pan of the audience at the beginning of those shows?
    QOTD: nope.

  67. September 26, 2008

    M

QOTD: I’ve never had rad peeps watch me. Or any peeps.

    Oregon State upset USC. Wow.

  68. September 26, 2008

    pawncop

I do like the live shows, you have a higher energy level. Yery much enjoyed the episode. So far have only had the lower end pinot noir’s, but am trying more soon.

QOTD – I have been priviledged to been a moderator for state conferences in past for my professional society, and appreceiate the energy they provided.

Very cool….. wish I was there Homey!!!

At the shore now but coming up for the Wine room sale…!!!

    QOTD— Not really

  71. September 26, 2008

    Cool Show!!!

I like the live shows thrown in every so often.

QOTD: Unfortunately I have not had the chance to stand and talk bout what I love in front of that many “rad” people.

    oops nvm. im wrong

  75. September 26, 2008

    Harry

Sure, but after seeing this show, the 500 episode, and a few others in front of big crowds (Boston) I think you’re much better in smaller settings, where your humor comes across more playfully. Its doesn’t need to be a contest between you and the crowd, just some fun with wine. Maybe leaving the football booing too… Why be negative on such a happy positive show?
But thanks again as always for the insight on the wines. I’m looking forward to exploring Anderson Valley Pinots soon.

  76. September 26, 2008

    Robin C

QOTD: I avoid large crowds – wrong vibes for me. But I do admire and respect the ability to grab the attention of a large crowd and to be committed enough to something to share it with a lot of people. It’s kind of a talent and also a big responsibility, really.

  77. September 26, 2008

    Kenny Dion

Love these live shows. We need more of them.

  78. September 26, 2008

    CHICAGO MARK

NOT A GOOD SHOW..ALL THE CLICHES CAME OUT..OBNOXIOUS LIKE…KINDA PHONY..OR SO IT SEEMED.

  79. September 26, 2008

    Wednesday

    Nice show, Gary.
Not as taken with the live shows. Maybe they could be used to explore another aspect of wine or a Q&A session with the crowd.

  80. September 26, 2008

    wayno da wino

Yo G, NIIIIIIIIIICE Pinots!! Ya got me salivatin’ for somma dat
“sheep-butt explosion” action (Donatiello Pinot) in da Grill Piece….

QOTD: Public Speakin’ to da Peeps?? Not really me Bag……

  81. September 26, 2008

    AshmanE

As with many other people, the live shoots aren’t as entertaining for me, but I know it’s hard to play to the audience and the camera at the same time and so much of the quality of a live show depends on the audience. When you have 20 or 30 people, then you can maintain the intimacy. When you have 200 or 2000, half of which are having side conversations, then you find yourself competing with the other stuff going on and it’s hard to maintain the focus. You do a good job of it though.

QOTD: Actually, I give presentations to rooms full of people several times a year. Doing 4 more in France in about 2 weeks. When it goes really well it leaves you pumped and stoked for the next one. When the people aren’t engaged or interested, then you wonder what the hell you’re waisting your time for. It’s give and take, but it’s a living. ;-)

  82. September 26, 2008

    WineWoman

QOTD: Yes, being a musician I have been honored by several large audiences. The backround noise was distracting to the content of the show, but I liked it anyway.

  83. September 26, 2008

    Jayhitek

    Solid episode.

  84. September 26, 2008

    Murso

I agree that the large and noisy crowd is completely distracting to us, AND to you. Still, I’m sure it was FUN to all present! Forty and 50 dollar Pinots definitely deserve better attention, and closer inspection than from a shitty little glass, in a dark, noisy and drafty room. Kinda like watching a great director’s work (a la Kubrick or Bergman) on your i phone. (with a bunch of rad peep talking throughout). And excuse me, but, IMHO, while Veramonte wines can perform for everyday purposes, to cellar wine like that for even 3 or esp. 5 years is loony. Even their Reserve level. Just sayin’….As always, G, your opinion is valid, and the important thing is, you lay out your disclaimer that my, or your opinion is no better’n… theirs.

  85. September 26, 2008

    Kathy Hughes

HI Gary, Just checking in to say how forward the Hughes are looking to:
    1. The Thunder Cruise
    2. And, she said hopefully, a yummy champagne free ship offer.

    Be well,
    Naples Kathy aka Champagne Lady

  86. September 26, 2008

    NYC Kim

You DID seem a little too “on”. Selling harder than usual. You were sreaming into the mic as if you didn’t believe it would carry your voice out to the crowd. It was like the school prinicpal came out into the yard at recess to make a speech to the kids about how much fun it is to play outside.

  87. September 26, 2008

    Miguel Cavalcanti

The live audience was a nice change of pace, but I prefer the studio, especially when you tip the glass and display the color. Also holding the mike throws your rhythm off–couldn’t they fit you with a collar job? It was interesting to hear how the large space affected your voice–even though you were entirely dependant on the sound system, you shouted because you felt the space–I’d guess that pitchwise, you were singing about a 4th higher than usual.

Just observations. I enjoyed the show very much, and thanks for the tip about
Donatiello. And that pass-it-around gesture was great!

QOTD: The bailiff would only allow 200 in court–can I count the people standing outside?

  88. September 26, 2008

    Kelly Goff

Was anyone listening to you? I hope all that were there had fun, cause it was not my favorite episode to watch.

  89. September 27, 2008

    Kidder

Wine Rockstar you’re not!!!!! WaYYY too over the top Gary!!!!! Stick to the studio stuff, that’s just a little too much dont’cha think??????

P.S. WHERE THE F*CK IS MY WRISTBAND????????

  90. September 27, 2008

    neutron212

oh my that was crazy. it was like you had 30ppl watching and 300 talking what was that about. QOTD: only once but that was only becasue i had guns

  91. September 27, 2008

    chenin

Oh well, that was bad. Don’t do it again, Gary. Sorry to bring you down again, but I think you have to stick to information and content, not silly slogans and posing. Doesn’t seem to come across natural, more like a business modell.

  92. September 27, 2008

    Dan-o

Dude – you seemed either angry or drunk! I know that you usually don’t like to drink too much, therefore I doubt that youe were three sheets to the wind.
Seemed like you pieced this episode together to add to the count, rather than seriously indulge.
QOTD – I am a guitar player and one of my favorite things to do is play for people and make them smile.

  93. September 27, 2008

    JudeMurphy

That looked stressful, Gary! ; )
It sounded like no one was listening! haha
    I’m sure they were though.
Yeah, it’s always nice when people pay attention to you!

  94. September 27, 2008

    BargePlus

Sorry, Gary, but this show really didn’t do a thing for me. I was too distracted by all the noise from the disrespectful people in the audience. I thought the number of people talking during the taping of the 500th episode in SF was bad, but this was plain awful. Maybe episodes with big crowds aren’t a good thing. I much more enjoy the opn-site episodes with the French winemakers.

  95. September 28, 2008

And the review of this EP is… Decent but stern attack (on the bubble), nice midpalate (keeper but I’m still not dropping 48 bones on it), and a bitter finish (passzzzz). Overall you sounded like the ringmaster introducing a cage match between Superfly Snuka and Pan Parel Purple. Props to you for making the best of a loud situation.

I agree with a lot of the commenters – this seemed like “Gary (TM)”, not the cool guy who shares all his knowledge and interest with us. I very much prefer watching the personal individual shows.

I work with a smaller group, but it’s every day! It’s hard to work when people are yapping.

Gotta love the live shows Gary, lots of Patriots references the past few episodes, I think you may be alerted to the scent of dominance resonating throughout the AFC East…oh wait…that’s the Bills.

As people have said this may not have come across too well on video, but I think it would have been pretty cool to be there! I also think it is so cool how big this program has gotten. Commenters, go back and see the first episodes of this show and you will be blown away by how far this has come. It’s all because of Gary’s hard work and dedication. Thanks for all you do!

    Damn they were rowdy!
Didn’t enjoy this show as much as others.
    QOTD: yep .. and more.

Rowdy indeed. Actually, the sound kind of sucked.

Hey, did you ever reveal how you got that scar on top of your noggin?
A lot of perfumes smell like Raid to me. Or have a Raid-like component.
Oh shit, sheep butt exploding in your face is not a pretty picture.
STOP HATING ON THE PATRIOTS. Can’t we all just get along :-) .
    QOTD: Not for a while.

Nice show. Sounded like the crowd was more interested in talking to each other than paying attention to you. Shame….. Those were some damn pricy wines for what they brought. Think I might buy on the low end before I start tossing $50 around. QOTD: I get nervous in front of crowds, so I try to avoid public speaking of any kind.

Glad you liked the Donatello, I went by in Nov ‘08 and I think I liked the regular pinot more than their reserve. Too bad about the price, but Chris is a cool guy and the place has a sweet deck for a lazy afternoon lunch. I wish I’d stayed up to date with the episodes, but I’m working through them to catch up ASAP. In fact, I don’t think I’ve missed an episode since… around #450 maybe?

Think I could catch some shwag? That Vayner Nation sweatband is bomb.

QOTD: Just started lacrosse coaching, and when you’re new to it, looking tough in front of 40 guys decked out in full gear is a bit daunting. Give me a few weeks, and I’ll have it down :)

Sounds like the crowd is yapping together with you..it’s bit annoying so it’s a pity seeing you so passionate delivering your stuff and they keep on yapping away……very sad.
