My “pal” has been craving some Chianti lately and this show excited me that I will be able to satisfy my thirst but unfortunately no winner tonight. Good show though esp pairing them with cheese to no avail.

QOTD: I’ve always liked the inexpensive Isole e Olena by Antinori. I think it would have a good QPR.

    Sante!

CASAL THAULERO 2007- This is $9.00 in Canada so in Jersey you can get it for $3.00

Too bad about these Chiantis. This is one of our “go to” styles since they pair well with Italian food which is our favorite.

QOTD: My recommendation is Castello di Monsanto Chianti Classico Riserva 2004. Cherries and vanilla dominate the nose and palate. Very smooth and full bodied with a nice finish.

Not really into Chianti for more than 5-6 years.

QOTD: Anyway, I’ve got three that I drank recently that where good:

    Brolio, Chianti Classico 2006
Castello de Volpaia Cianti Classico Riserva 2004 ( 2003 was even better)
Castello Nipozzano Riserva Frescobaldi Chianti Rùfina 2005 (2004 was better)

Don’t think I’ve really had a Chianti that I’ve liked. Probably because I’ve only ever drank them at restaurants by the glass. I should give a quality Chianti a chance.

Yeah well, I was going to pop open my Falco De’ Neri, Chianti Classico Riserva 2001, a suggestion from a reliable sommelier friend, but I guess I’ll stick to my Ch. David Cru Bourgeois from the Médoc for tonight (I’m rarely disappointed by this area).

    Keep your smile Gary!

QOTD:Not lateley, the last one I had was expensive and a major letdown.
Please do a Kentucky Bourbon show. Or Perhaps a cognac/argmanac show.

whadya gonna do? too bad. BTW thanks for saving me $20 cause the antinori is at my wine store and it was kinda on the radar.
QOTD – i have not been drinking to many chiantis as of late, but i had a 2003 chianti classico reserva, DOCG ” la Selvanella”. it was a 03, so not very typical but it was tasty. granted it had a a lot of T & A, i was a fan. next time. BTW, i wish you would explain how the labeling works is chianti with the pink lables, the rooster… etc + 06 is supposed to be a tight vintage, right?

I had some really good chianti’s in Tuscany, but haven’t found anything at home that has been worth recommending.

not much experience with Chianti, tried a couple and definitely didn’t care for them much, they seem too watered down for my palette

QOTD: I had a 05 Da Vinci Chianti Classico that was thoroughly enjoyable. But i am obsessing much more about the more rustic piedmontese wines at the moment.

I’ve only ever tasted one Chianti that I really liked but I forget what it was called.

QOTD: Not much of a chianti drinker, I know too many people who have served me too much crappy chianti. What about Felsina or maybe Corzano e Paterno. I had a Panerreta a while back that wasn’t too bad either.

QOTD: Querceto Chianti Classico Riserva, Badia Coltibuono Chianti Cl Riserva, Vignamaggio, Nippozzano Riserva & Selavpiana Chianti Rufina.

Gary, I love a Chianti every once in a while, indeed Sangiovese is one of my fave mainstream grapes.

Had a New Mexico wine called Nini from Luna Rossa Winery, it’s Sangiovese, Barbera, Refosco, docetto and Nebbiolo. Fan Fucking tastic wine.

Imma going to send you a bottle, I swear.

    Here’s my three suggestions:

Selvapiana Bucerchiale Chianti Classico Riserva 2004,
    Da Vinci Riserva Chianti 2004
    and
    Frescobaldi Nipozzano Reserva Chianti 2005

Can Chianti (or even Sangeovese) really be saved?

  23. October 2, 2008

I think that the quality of Chianti has slipped over the past few years. I thought that maybe my palate had changed, but I don’t know. I agree with you about the Ruffino. Even the gold label is not as good as it was. Not worth the money.

Not pertaining to the episode (which was great), I would like to see someone with a lot of wine tasting experience give this a true review. It is an ultrasonic machine designed to artificially age a wine.

    What do you all think?
