Long time lurker, first time poster. I just opened up an ‘05 Joseph Drouhin Brouilly last night and was coming on to see if any Drouhin had been reviewed here, and voila! The Brouilly seems to be quite a different beast from the Pommard (never tried one). It’s very light on its feet – raspberry and sour cherry flavors in there, along with a nice floral component – not the most complex wine out there, but still an enjoyable drink – and not too shabby for $13!

QOTD: My older brother. We have similar palates but he picks up on different things than I do.

I usually watch WLTV via ipod. This is really the first time I’ve watched it on the site so I’ve been quite the “lurker” until now.

Look forward to trying some Burgundy for sure!

QOTD: My lovely and intelligent wife. We are just getting into trying new wines together and she is just as adventurous as I. Her grandparents were big wine enthusiasts so we are excited to keep wine drinking alive in our family.

Hey, FINALLY a true 2005 red burgundy episode. Took you long enough! I’ve been playing heavily in 2005 Burgundy and finding, as you did today, that many of them are just too locked down… in a “dumb phase,” as is talked about. You can tell there’s huge structure there, but with this vintage especially, some of these wines are going to truly need 15 years to be drinkable… you mentioned this is the problem with Burgundy, because you can drop $100 bones and get utter crap.. but there’s a huge difference here between utter crap and a wine that’s closed down. I don’t think many people are dropping $100 on 2005 Red Burgundy and expecting to drink it tomorrow. These wines need time but they WILL come around. Sure, you can still spend $100 and get crap, but just because it’s shut down today that doesn’t make it crap. Glad you scored that one a question mark instead of judging it how it’s showing today; I’m surprised the middle one was even showing well at all even. I have roughly 60 bottles of 2005 Red Burgundy in the cellar, and I’m not planning on touching a single one for at least 5 years from now.

Wristband QOTD: The only one I DON’T have is the sniffy sniff one, because you only sent that to people who bought your book on father’s day or bought something else. I bought two books earlier, and you said you’d send the wristband to people who sent the email to book@winelirary or whatever, but I never got one anyway. :-(

QOTD: My friend Ken. One of the only friends who really gets it.

QOTD- I have a friend back home in Richmond VA who I love to taste and drink with. He is the sommelier at my restaurant back home and I moved out to be the somm at our location in Chicago. Hi Gary,

    Several comments here:

    1. I think we should trade the little ponies for the guy who was elastic; remember that toy? Real heavy and if you ripped it it had this funny liquid inside that smelled weird.
    2. Interesting on wine #2, I will give it a try and buy a couple of bottles.
    3. I do have the old school bug for Burgundian wine, and wish you did more shows on it if only to help us steer clear of the $100 busts…
    4. QOTD: my sons would be the answer, but they are only 12 and 10 so can’t wait for them to turn 18!! (our local legal age) Currently: my wife and my dad.
    5. How can anybody, really, hate Billy Joel? what is this world coming to…

FINAL THOUGHT: I love it when you drop the “whether they like it or not” bit from your finale… it is too defensive and frankly you don’t need to explain yourself to anyone.

AWESOME! so happy not only an 05 burg show, but one on pommard. i have a few bottles of pommard in my cellar including 02 pousse ‘dor and an 05 potel les vignots. i opened a 2000 maillard aloxe corton last new years and it was goooood. it had plenty of structure and a good dose of smoke. i wish i had a few more.
QOTD _ my friend tots cause he gets it and always appreciates a good bottle and shares them too. also, just friends. i love to open a bottle from the year we met or things like that. they act as time capsules. also i love to drink with people who are just getting into it and are really discovering.

again, great show gary. way to start the week

  51. October 6, 2008

    Rick D

I enjoyed the show, but Pinot Noir does not appeal to my palate very much. I can’t say that I have had a Burgundy, but at the price point they are at I have numerous other styles I prefer to drink, So. Rhone, Tuscany, Rioja, etc. I have had some American Pinots that were good, but still not a style that I gravitate to, even after seeing “Sideways”. I will take the f—ing Merlot.

QOTD: My wife first and then the rest of the family. Family holidays are all about good food and wine. My wife was born of 12-23 and me on X-mas day. Makes for a great party week with wine taking an important role. This is when we really splurge.

I will need to order some of the Chaniere but what a hideous label. Ouch!

QOTD: Though I don’t get to visit or drink wine with him too often these days, I get sooo excited drinking wine in person with a friend of mine, Dr. Wo (Tom Woteki). One of my learned wine and food connoisseurs in these here parts of DC. In my eworld, I enjoy drinking along with the G-Man each and every night.

    Cheers!

Gary, baseball cards are very fun touch. One suggestion: I think at the end of each episode you need to pair each wine with one player/card that best fits the wine. For example, Drouhin gotta be Storm Davis- beefy, tough (well maybe not flowery), but a bit one-dimensional and little pizazz or specialness, but solid (113 wins, 1000 strikeouts); Mailard is definitely Wally Backman – sweaty clothes, dirty socks, cheap pepper. Backman far more exciting than Storm Davis. Domaine af Gros has to be Dave Stewart, big, intimidating, no fruit, just intimidation sprinkled with a little funk and got better and better with age (best years all when over 30).

    Gary,
-Congrats on the WE “Innovator of the Year” nomination.
-Thanks for the show–info on “value” Burgs would be great–
I have hesitated to pursue Burgundies to avoid the
pricing slippery slope (or in this case, escalator).

You could not do enough shows on Burgundy! Yep.

Thought your reviews did a nice job of characterizing the wines, such a different set of blokes in the lineup. With that in mind, I would point out as a relative Burgundy newbie that the most intimidating thing about Burgundy is not learning the villages or the crus, but the producers. For the first two you can just read a book, memorize and such. But the producers require time and $$$$. Your show seems to highlight that point, and I really wish you had delved into the producers some. If you’ve got the goods on any of these guys, give it up!

For my own, I have had more Joseph Drouhin (many different Burgundy villages) than any other Burgundy producer (maybe because they are affordable and available), and have had the same experience you had on this show – every time. Passable but totally uninspiring, some just completely flat. Certainly not worthy of the appellations they bottle. I was interested to see you have a similar reaction (I have never had their Pommard).

More Burgundy, more on the producers, woot, woot.

wow Gary. What a great QOTD!

My favorite person to drink wine with is my Fiancee Michelle.

She’s a lab tech by profession…one of the things required of her job is to be able to identify smells for certain growth plates…it sounds kinda gross, but I’m telling you girl has such a sharp pal. She doesn’t have any of the bull poopie wine education either, she just calls it like it is, and loves to have yummy yummy wine with me.

    You’d like her man.

haha the Papa smurf action cracked me up….
still think its crazy that the wine was SO young
awesome show again man, keep em coming!!
QOTD= one of the wine suppliers down here, knows a lot but we do argue sometimes cuz we disagree on certain wines BUT its hilarious

I love drinking wine with my buddies, Jeff and Todd. We all work in the industry (in one way or another) and really have a blast tearing through four or five bottles and just breaking them down all night long. We do a “wine night” about once a week – work and girlfriends permitting. Good show, too, thanks for that.

  101. October 7, 2008

My ideal saturday night is a bottle of wine and the company of my fiancee Lacey just lounging around maybe catching a movie and discussing the wine.

Hello~Nice to be back, see this generous show, WLTV, and share gary’s adventure.

QOTD: my wife, I guess so. It is good to share experience with other people as well, but in this way, amilia and me really understand each better thru last year. Different palate, different way to describe the world, different experience we had got before we met each other 10 years ago…and while we are exploring both the world of vino and the world of each other, we are still in love, and we are still family. The best thing is tasting, I think, could be understanding one’s self and the ones loved.

    Nice episode, as usual.:)

    Hi Gary,
I’ve been watching you on podcasts for almost a year and I’ve finally caught up with the most recent episodes! So now I’m up to date, I’m determined to leave a comment.
I love drinking with anyone who has a genuine interest in wine. Not necessarily a hard-core passion, just someone who takes the time to notice so we can have that “this is good isn’t it?” moment when something above average pops up.
Short answer: my wife, Liz. If I find anything good while I’m not with her, I have to let her know!

    Hi Gary.
Very long time I didn’t manage to catch up with you again. Think I missed some 100 episodes. You’re still doing more than fine. Feels good to see you again.
Pommard, doing good. Fell in love with Burgundy last two years. Favorite appellation is definitely Morey-St-Denis or Gevrey-Chambertin. Especially the GC’s can be grand, if you have the nerve to wait.
QOTD: my wife-to-be by far, when just enjoying a glass. Some wine palls when judging a glass.

  106. October 7, 2008

    Benj

QOTD: My girlfriend, Polly comes at the top, of course, but all my friends who are interested in wine are great fun to drink with, and those who aren’t, too. The people in Averys are great fun to taste with, really keen teachers, and they’ll open pretty much any bottle under around £12 ($20)

  107. October 7, 2008

    Christine Rufkahr

QOTD = My favorite person to drink wine with is my boyfriend, Keith. We have been happily unmarried for almost 10 years.

Many times when Keith & I are drinking Old World red wine, and we give it a sniffy sniff, we smell band-aids. Does anyone ever get that? What is that? We are “advanced beginners” (i.e. our consumption of wine for outweighs our knowledge) when it comes to wine so I’m thinking that what we are smelling is something common that has a more appropriate name. Just wondering what that might be. Is it an oak thing?

I have never noticed this in New World wines.

Starting at about 5:10 the whole vodka, Stalin diatribe was great. Burgundy has definitely become the rich mans’ hobby. A good friend likes to say that drinking Burgundy is like playing golf. About one out of every ten strokes is amazing and that inspires you to go through with the other nine.

QOTD: My wife, with Enjoli Duvall a close second.

QOTD: My beautiful wife… it’s our anniversary so we are getting a good bottle tonight.

Thanks again for all the work you guys put into these shows…..

Nice – but those prices are just too high in my mind. Using your scores as a barometer, why would I spend over $40 on a 90 point wine when I could spend the same amount for an Oregon/Washington Pinot or something from Southern France that you scored over 93 points. I know that is comparing apples to oranges, and all of your scores are, as you say, bullcrap. Still, the QPR with these wines makes me sad.

QOTD – three people: my brother, my girlfriend, and friend, Doug.

  113. October 7, 2008

    Dan Harms

QOTD: The girlfriend is always a great go-to for sharing a bottle. But tied by sitting and drinking with my Dad. Gotta love drinking and spending time with Dad.

  114. October 7, 2008

    theemptyglass

QOTD: this is tough! I have different people for different reasons. My dad is great because, he bonds over wine, its something he loves and when you drink with him, you feel like your sharing your sharing something special. My mom is great too esp since she has a palette to rival Gary’s. She can pick out exactly what the wine tastes like even if it’s something random like hot dogs. My boyfriend is great too because we get to share that unwinding from the day moments over wine. I also really enjoy drinking wine with my brother because well I dunno, I just do, I’ll have to drink some more with him and decide why =)
What can I say, for me and my family wine is important and it’s a way we all bond, and I love them all.

  115. October 7, 2008

The flower aroma you were trying to identify in the Drouhin Pommard is probably that of violets. The violets in France have a beautiful and distinctive aroma, but we don’t see violets here (at least not in the east) sold in bouquets. Still it is a haunting scent that helps make Burgundies so special.

Nice show. I had similar experiences selling 05 Pommard. It would take 3-4 days for the Domaine Gibourg to open up and show its lush brandied cherry fruit. I would show the wine a few times to buyers, and then share the last glass with my best friend Marie over the weekend, whom I already miss since I moved out of NYC for Napa.

  120. October 7, 2008

    ev

Mr Vaynerchuk, I’m now questioning the future with inviting you into my home with my wife AND my dog to watch your show. After viewing this, @ 9:25, I can only wonder (and cringe) WHY you know what “COW DONG” smells like. Dung is great, but……………

  121. October 7, 2008

    Scottie P

QOTD: First and foremost, I Love drinking wine with Maggie, my wife and best friend. Beyond that I enjoy drinking wine with anyone. It’s a great icebreaker and conversation fuel source.

P.S. I have all the wrist bands except for Gen1. Any idea how to get one? How about the new green one?

  122. October 7, 2008

    Harry

    Phil G,
Your comment makes me sad. Yes good burgundy is expensive, but as you note, comparing the QPR of Pommard vs. Oregon Pinot Noir is completely missing the point. Burgundy tells the stories of dozens of small villages and vineyards, each with a unique interpretation of their terroir through the lens of pinot and chardonnay. With tiny plots, they are not making millions like some of the big houses in Napa or even Bordeaux, but are dedicated to making perhaps the most profound and complex pinots in the world. If there is one wine region worth going beyond a budget for, my choice is always Burgundy. You will have lots of hits (Faively has been a consistently good negociant in my experience) and even more misses, but there is no comparison to Burgundy. I hope you’ll have an opportunity to fall in love with these as I have.

  123. October 7, 2008

    Great Burgundy show!
QOTD: My Father, he enjoys treating his Pal and so do I!

  124. October 7, 2008

    Jason S.

QOTD: My friend Brent – he also like to learn :)

Question for you GV – since Burgundy/Pinot generally doesn’t have the same amount of tannin as say, Cabernet or Merlot, generally how long can they be aged before they fall apart?

  125. October 7, 2008

    Ken F

That has to be my girlfriend, which is also my wife. It really does not get any better.

    QOTD: My wife, Molly, definitely.

She helps me write great tasting notes and can pick out aromas and flavors almost as well as Gary. In fact, we have a deal with local wineries whereby they give us three bottles of wine for free and we write their official notes for publication. Pretty fun!

Last wine 15 years too soon? I can see 5 years from now, maybe 8, most 10. can’t drink after 10 years (2015)? Then vollie this bottle to launch your neighbors new rowboat or canoe, esp after dumping $93 on a ? mark.
QOTD: someone who can hold their own with me drinking vintage port and laughing in amazment how good it is…

Good education, which is what I enjoy about your programs.

QOTD – As my wife does not enjoy wine I really do not have a wine drinking partner, except for my son in law that I see on occasion, but not for just wine drinking.

  140. October 8, 2008

    W Miree

Great show! I love Burgundy, and Pommard is a good entry point: sophisticated enough to show what the really good Burgundies can do, but at a much lower price point. For me, Pommard almost always needs time to soften the rough tannic edges…especially the great ones. Man, I love when Burgundy shows smoky, mushroomy, barnyard nuances, and great complexity along with its typical silky texture. When its right on, it is king.

PS: I think the flower was a pansy.

  144. October 8, 2008

    Lawrence Leichtman

I love Burgundy as well and miss not drinking it due to the ridiculous prices for my favorites. I have not been a big fan of Pommards because I just find them too meaty without much elegance and elegance is my reason for drinking Burgundy. I have many favorite people to drink with. First my wife, them my kids, and finally several best friends.

  145. October 8, 2008

Interested in seeing what happens 48 from now (then).

Even though my dad has no taste for higher quality wines, I still love to drink with him. I only get to see him a couple of times a month, so we open a bottle or two, talk, play darts, its just a lot of fun.

  148. October 8, 2008

    Rick

I have not had the pleasure of a great Pommard since the late 70s/early 80s which would have made the vintage around 73ish.I once considered Pommard my all time fav.

I would have to say I most enjoy drinking wine with my wife Irina (who by the way is native Russian) but a close runner up is my oldest bud “Jersey Joe”

  149. October 9, 2008

QOTD: Jes Phalen – always an enjoyable drinking partner.

Great show, never tried Pommard, and realized I must be missing out. Thanks for continuing to deliver quality shows that really bring it.

QOTD: I really enjoy tasting wine with my friend/neighbor Epic, I bring the wine, he brings the cheese. Good stuff. Wine is never as good as it is with my wife, family or friends. Ever.

    Hi Gary

How did the AF Gros Pommard open up after a day or two in the decanter?

  153. October 11, 2008

    glenn

great show with terrific content! loved how you would not rate The Gros. like you i can not begin to guess how supertight wines from wonderful vintages will be like in a decade or two. always interesting to me how everyone else in the wine world can do this though, Hmmm.

you ever see Black Jack McDowell’s rookie card he looks just like me dude!

QotD: my buddy David in Fla. loves fine wine, knows what is good and why, funny as hell when he 1st begins to drink. sadly alcohol is a big problem in his life and this reminds me to preach, and live, moderation.

  154. October 11, 2008

    Brad

Great episode. Thanks! I love burgundy. It is my favorite. I will look for the Maillard here in Colorado.

QOTD: I love to drink with my wife and my friend who is from France. We all have a great time.

By the way, have you ever tried to use an Eisch wine glass? They say that two minutes in this glass is like 2 hours in a decanter, I have found that wine does open a lot when I use them. The wine glass really does make a difference.

  155. October 12, 2008

    Good show!
Love the Burgundies, but they are expensive!
QOTD – My wife. She is my best frined and companion and we love to sip a glass of wine or two and catch up after a long week.

    TimCub

QOTD: My favorite person to drink wine with is definitely my friend, Mr. W. Murray Sexton, who is the proud owner of a signed copy of “101 Wines”. He is most certainly a sucker for Australian Shiraz, but I did introduce him the other day to Catalonian Tempranillo, and he was fascinated. I always enjoy going to his place and enjoying new wines with him. Thank you, Gary, for making us expand our palates.

  160. October 19, 2008

    Kristen

Hell yeah I have an old school wristband! I got it in Boston this summer!

QOTD: I probably like to share a bottle (or two) with my wine group in Madison or with other friends and family.

  161. October 21, 2008

    YoungDave

QOTD: I’ve tasted wine with a lot of colleagues, wine distributors, and friends, but as cheesy as it is, I’ll always enjoy having a glass of wine with Mamma Dukes the most.

  162. November 2, 2008

    Logan

QOTD: My best friend in Tokyo and my only close fellow American here, Jesse, whom is probably the only person I can really dissect the flavor profile of wine with while we drink together. We’re both big fans of South American wine, although neither of us have money so we usually drink the cheap stuff! Of course talking about cheap and even poorly-made wine is still fun, even if that consists of dissing on it while enjoying!

  163. November 4, 2008

    Ray Barnes

As usual Gary comes up with colorful ways of describing wine flavour and bouquet that elude other wine experts. Even the depth with which he declined to give a score to the Anne-Francois Gros wine was done with distinction.

QOTD: Oddly enough, it is very special to share a very moderate amount of wine with my 11-year old daughter. Her palette has no preconceptions whatsoever. She is learning to respect the whole process of wine and that is a good learning experience for me too. She likes it with fine imported cheese, even some of the very aromatic blues.

  164. November 11, 2008

    Cool scoop on Pommard

  165. January 11, 2009

    kathyintex ( kathyd )

Thanks for the get well shout – much appreciated!

QOTD ~ Whew…Drink wine at work (FOR work) with lots of people, but to really ENJOY the experience? Probably my friend Terry, she and I will do the sniffy-sniff forever before finally tasting our wines, then we just look at each other and make the most fabulous faces to express our enthusiasm (sometimes our dismay – yuck), then we switch glasses and try each other’s wine. We have a similar tast profile, but she likes the stinky ones (Italian) more than I do. She’s the Tignanello fan. I’m more Bordeaux-style blends, or Cote du Rhone CNDPape.

  166. January 23, 2009

    Dessert Wine Nerd

Another great show. Ive had a few wines from Burgandy and enjoyed them both. QOTD: My parents. Like me, they havent had a wide selection of wines from around the world, so its fun to experience a new type of wine along with them.

  167. November 2, 2009

    nnothing

qotd: My friend Vinnie… last summer I was lucky enough to be able to hang out with him about once a week to try new stuff and along side favorites. It was pretty cool because we have very very similar palates and we branched way outside of our comfort zone and discovered a lot of new wines over the course of the summer.
