    * Domaine De La Garrigue Cotes Du Rhone Cuvee Romaine 2006 (solid cote du rhone rouge)

    * Chateau Pesquie Les Terrasses 2006

    * Cusumano Insolia 2007 (A rude Sicilian waitor in Siracusa pushed this wine on me; turned out to be a decent white wine)

Great episode–keep the value driven stuff coming!
QOTD–best one I’ve had lately is probably the Mateus Signature 2005 Douro. Under $10 even up here in Canada.

Just opened the 2006 Ancient Peaks zin last night-13 bones, great bottle of wine, nice spice, licorice and jammy fruit. Unfortunately, it’s sold out already. 93 rated in WS

Good show. I’m always a fan of finding values.

Also, the baseball cards are so awesome. And who doesn’t love David Wells. I saw him in a bar when the Yankees were here playing the Mariners and he was super cool, totally nice, and called my roommate an idiot for telling him that he could hit his splitty (Wells doesn’t throw a splitty).

QOTD: Snoqualmie Merlot (2005). Very solid, and for $7-8, it can’t be beat. I have tasting notes somewhere in my blog. Search through to find it. :)

    … well I did recently get a glass of Pontet-Canet for €11! ; )
    Oh, and a grand-puy-lacoste for €15!

And, (though I’d just throw this in) I got a bottle, yes a bottle, of lynch-bages 96 for €50!!
It’s usually €185! That was crazy!

Hey gary, whatever happened to that thank you of the day thing you were doing a while ago?

Good show, Gary. The best sub-$13 wine I’ve had lately was Francois Montand Blanc de Blancs. It’s a very good French sparkling wine, especially for the price.

Hi Gary & Nation: qotd: My inexpensive ‘house red’ is a nice Spanish red for six $ @ Trader Joe in Reno: Familia Sanchez: Tempranillo and Syrah, 13.5%. Jammy and pleasantly mouth filling with a velvety, concentrated texture.
    Smell it first!

  28. October 8, 2008

    Craig Owen

    Great show Gary,

The best recent under-$13 red I’ve had was actually the Pillar Box Red you reviewed… I actually liked it a bit better than you (89 pts.)

I also recently had the ‘07 MonteNovo but wasn’t as high on it as you were (88 pts. for me). My best under-$13 white of late was actually a 2001 Disznoko Tokaji Dry Furmint. A total shocker for me as it was my first ever dry Tokaji.

QOD———hate to do it, but my best buy in the last month is the Ste Michelle Riesling 2007 Washington State. $6.99 grocery stores, $5.99 liquor store and 10% off for purchases over 6. At 1.9% r.s., it’s just a little sweet for me, but that sweetness helps bring out the tropical flavors. A dry riesling can be had for the same price, but it’s just a bit too bracing. Also the semillon is great for the same price.

So Gary, are you going to “Eat Crow” for the Joe Torre “way overrated” comment from months back?

Did you know that the name “Dodgers” was shortened from “Trolley Dodgers” used from 1911-1931?

  30. October 8, 2008

    QOTD:

Marietta Old Vine Red is a favorite. I think they’re up to Lot #47 now. Typically a blend of Zin, Carignane, Syrah, Petite Sirah, and a bit of Cab. The blend provides for a very flavorful, medium to full-bodied, reasonably complex wine. Fruit-driven with a bit of spice and absolutely no funk. The Oak Monster is not a player with this wine. Very good price-point(usually around $10).

  31. October 8, 2008

agree on the Pillar Box – although for $8/btl I thought it perfect to serve at BBQs and bought a six pack…

Once again thanks for the Birthday shoutout…this week I’ve had a couple good >$11 dollar bottles, Bogle Petit Syrah, nice color, good fruit, decent structure.

I also had Big House Red, from Big House winery, Crazy mashup of half a dozen varietals, wild as hell, but damn fun to drink. Plus there website is cute as hell.

Thanks again for what ya do GV!

Great idea for a show: Gary, you really bring the thunder!!!

QOTD: I got a great Loire valley sauvignon blanc. 2006 Domaine de Chatenoy Menetou-Salon for 9€, I guess that s around 13$.

Great nose: floral, lime, a bit of asparagus.
Nice flavour: a bit of peach, nice acidity, lemon-lime on the mid-palate, subtle exotic fruit finish. Good structure and long finish.

had it today and had avery pleasant surprise!

What a great episode for Mott– face time and the big zoom. Way to go, Mott!!

QOTD: 2007 Leonard Kreusch Spatlese Riesling. 9 bucks and some change at my local shop. This was my first German Riesling so I don’t have a comparison, but I really liked it. I have a newbie palate, but I really enjoyed the flavor– like the syrup from canned peaches. I’ve been craving it since.

QOTD: I had a 2005 Cheval Quancard Reserve Bordeaux for $12.99. I havent heard anything about this winery before, just trying every value 05 bordeaux I see. Thought is was good for the price.

Oak monster was “flaming” in more ways than one.

Good show in an attempt for good “house” wines. I like it.

QOTD: I’m guessing here since mine was cut short but I’ll go with the Steenbur SB from SA you reviewed last week. Also, 5 is my fav number. Brooks Robinson

    Fontanafredda Barbera Piemonte “Briccotondo” 2006

It’s your show, GV, if you want run through a few baseball cards, go for it. I enjoy your snap recollections of the players. QOTD: Tittarelli Torrontes Reserva $11.

  59. October 8, 2008

    Benj

QOTD: Dr Loosen’s Dr L is a great entry level riesling that everyone knows and that I keep coming back to, amazing QPR at only £6.50 in Sainsburys. Had a 2001 Lealtanza Rioja Crianza recently for £9 from Averys (probably retails for around $13 in the states, I don’t know) that was delicious, not too heavy, tons of sour cherries, a little wood smoke, coffee, earth and smoooooooth. Drank it with a bunch of people, some of whom didn’t like it so much. I tend to avoid numerical ratings, but I guess it’s an 89+ for me, just not quite interesting enough to hit that 90.

    QOTD: None.

2nd place to a bottle of Gallo of Sonoma Zinfandel 2004

  64. October 8, 2008

    hugh

QOTD: I like Castano’s (Yecla, Spain) Hecula. It’s mostly Monastrell. Should be in the $12-13 range. Good “pop and pour” but can be held 2-4 yrs.

Great Episode! I am hunting the Zlatan right now. Just wathched the episode with some Chambolle-Musigny, Millesime 2003.

QOTD: Unfortunately I don’t drink a lot of 13 and under stuff because I am trying to drink a little less and tend to splurg on what I buy. That said I loved the Four Vines cuvee bottling.

Bill (below) is not kidding… the porca de murca douro is sensational for $8 (after shipping – or retail price)

QOTD: Hogue Fume Blanc (’06) and the Jonesy Tawny Port (NV) – I just can’t get enough of the stuff, especially with some dark chocolate or Oreos. God, I love Oreos…

QOTD: the r.h Phillips Viognier exp 2005 was a pretty big hit. On the sweet side for me, but not too, but in the happy zone for gf. So that makes me happy…. Scored @ WL for $8.80/ I see its now @ 10 bones.

  82. October 8, 2008

    Bored Doe

Great stuff Gary!!! Always love to try potential QPR wines. QOTD- 2006 Geode Santa Barbara County Chardonnay. A great $10 chard that is not typical of California (no oak monster here). There is oak in the wine but it is far more “appropriate” that what we are used to seeing in the golden state. Very nice tropical fruit and crisp acidity that is not overbearing. Best new world white wine that I have tried at this price point in quite a while.

  83. October 8, 2008

    Susan

Gary & Chris, You are BOTH tasting!!!! WHAT??? LOVE the energy!!!! :)

  84. October 8, 2008

QOTD: i’m going to bring back an old fave from the show: Prado Ayala Rioja – bold & flavorful for that price point. Wifey votes for the Shotfire Shiraz, but that may be $14 at WL. So my vote wins I think.

    Magnuson

2006 Mouton Cadet (or any year for the last six years!) Cheap and nice.

  88. October 8, 2008

    Pastafari Pirate

QOTD: Terrazas de los Andes Malbec. And 2 very close runners-up: Castano Hecula Monastrell, and Trapiche Oak Cask Malbec.

btw, I could go even cheaper, and give you a dozen QPR absolute gems that are $7 and under.

  89. October 8, 2008

    Patrick SF

QOTD: Sebeka Chenin Blanc 2008 from Western Cape South Africa $7.99 Not sure what star fruit tastes like, but I’ll have to try it to expand my palette.

QOTD: best under $13 wine recently is the 2006 Pacific Rim Gewurztraminer

QOTD: When I’m broke, I always like the Big Red Monster. It’s about 10 Bones.

I almost bought Pillar Box last night b/c I was going over to my brother’s house to watch the debate (I don’t have TV), and his dog’s name is Pilar so I thought it would be cool, then I thought, he’s loaded, I’ll just drink his wine.

I got my brother to watch the show for the first time last night. He loved it!!! He picked out a Napa show and was able to name the 3 of the 4 wines that were on the table even though you couldn’t see the labels very clearly. He’s off to Napa tomorrow!

I was in love with Tommy Herr when I was a kid. He was part of the ‘82 World Series Champion Cardinals!!! #28 and curly dark blond hair!!! Almost as hot as Gary.

Hey Mott and Gary, where’s my free schwag for writing a comment on that one episode? You know when Gary picked a show at random, and if you wrote a comment you get a schwag package. I was one of those people and I’m still waiting?

QOTD: Château Du Buisson Bordeaux 2006. At 7 bones, is a very solid wine. Great Tuesday dinner wine, in my opinion. Love the shift in the show, 13$ and under. It’s a good challenge, and a fun one at that.

When you were opening up the packs a couple of days ago I figured that you would open up a Steve Frey (pronounced fry), he is my dad’s cousin. He had a long career as a relief pitcher, and now runs a baseball camp down in Florida. Bit of useless trivia and the first time Steve’s name has been in the media for probaly 13 years. Kudos!

Here is the secret wine of all time. It scored 89 points Wine and Spirits. It smells, tastes and finishes like the wine that it purports to be. And, it is actually quite good. Oh, AND, it’s ONLY SIX BUCKS!!!

Santa Rita 120 2006 Cab, from Chile.

Get it while you can, and laugh at your friends who pay twelve and fifteen for garbage like Rodney Strong and others.

    Cheers, Gary!

If anyone is in Washington state, look out for Sockeye merlot.. it’s only $10, maybe even $6.99 on sale and goes great with spicy Indian food and of course, salmon.

I am new to wine but had someone recommend a VERY inexpensive Cab red blend called Mallet Pointe that sold for $5.99 a bottle! It has a screw cap and I don’t mind having just a glass at night without worrying about wasting the rest of it. I enjoy it and wow… does that work in to a budget!

Great idea for the show – economy episodes. I hope you stick true to your word and do quite a few of these (like one a week).

Loved the quick appearence by Mott and the baseball card opening – that impromptu makes this show interesting.

QTD – In the last month, I cannot think of any <$13 that I would recommend. In addition, Ohio’s pricing is possibly $2-$3 (or more) higher per bottle then many other states in this economy category. So we lose out on those $11-$13 bottles. For instance, although I have not seen The Victor (Lengs and Cooter) shiraz on the shelves here recently, I recall that as a $15-$17 bottling.

QOTD: Elio Perrone’s Tas Mor Can Barbera d’ Asti 2006. I usually don’t go back to buy more in this price range unless I’m exceptionally impressed, but this wine did it for me. Well-balanced perfect food wine, great for a BYO establishment. I paired it with grilled rib-eye steak , mashed potatoes, green beans and salad. Absolutely delicious. My husband and I rarely finish an entire bottle of wine at dinner, but we finished this one. Nice change from drinking a big Cali Cab with red meat.

I haven’t seen your show in months and decided to tune in today. Overall, it was a good show. You should know better than to try such a young Pommard. Burgundy – I’ll never understand why people buy it unless they buy it for their newborn babies to enjoy when they have children of their own.

QOTD: ’05 Chateau Pesquie Les Terrasses CdV – I bought a bunch of the ‘05 for $11. Amazing and incredible stuff. Why can’t everybody make wine like this? I haven’t tried the ‘06 yet but am looking forward to it when my ’05s are gone.

Another cheapie, $7ish or so, wine that never disappoints me is the Luzon Jumilla.

    Hi, Gary.

    A interesting info for you:
-I opened a 1982, Arnaud de Villeneuve, Riversaltes Amber Hors D’age, 16%vol, 3 MONTHS AGO, on my wife’s birthday, and then sealed with vacuum cork
-I tried it yestoday, nearly the same, and still firm and mellow on the palate, but shift from heavy to elegent: just a little light on alcohol and honey, and more caramel and spiciness.
Maybe it is due to the high alcohol content, but a good experience for me about aging…

In any event, I need to try that Godello, sounds like it’s an up-and-comer. Thanks for the tip.

Great show, it’s all in the heart of what you were trying to do. There are quite a few wines in the $13 and under range that really impress. Some that I have that I think I must share are:

    06′ La Linda Tempranillo – $8
    05′ La Mura Nero d’Avola – $8
    05′ Parróne – $12

Good show. Disappointed with the 2006 Pillar Box Red myself. For good wines under $13 – I would stick with the Australians – the Yalumba brand produces some decent reds and whites. I liked the unoaked Chardonnay and the Viognier. They also made a Shiraz/Viognier blend which is really nice too. There are a lot of other varietals available in Australia – I think they did a decent Pinot Grigio too. Check em’ out brother.

VG EP Gary – thanks. Totally agree on the Montenovo Godello! We picked up a couple bottles a few weeks ago after tasting it in the store, then when we tasted it at home with sushi and chicken dishes I was kicking myself we didn’t buy half a case or more. Great stuff for the moola.

ERG … COOL! Economy recommendation group! We like it! The videO stopped just be4 your great QOTD, so … we dunno what it was.

As you have had us drinking better and better wine (YET ANOTHER thank you for that) we ALSO want shows that showcase $20-$30 wines that show better (bring more thunder; e.g. the Mayers Grenache we so enjoyed, the Tensley wines, etc.) than their $50-$80 counterparts as THESE are the wines that Darcey and I look for for special occasions, weekends, and the like. Don’t get me wrong, we STILL want and NEED the $12-$15 value-driven high QPR wines, BUT we want some recommendations for the $20-$30 groups as well. Mid-priced recommendations = MPRs.

Thanks, as always … you are still our wine hero!

QOTD: The 2006 Galus Costieres Du Nimes rocked me! http://winelibrary.com/reviewwine.asp?item=39979 I think it was featured on free.winelib recently. So good, I might just have to order some more soon :-)

Great wines under $13 I had lately:

    white:
Biegler, Rotgipfler Ried Satz 2006 (Austria). Unique and autochtonous varietal that combines new world fruit with old world elegance. Great nose, full-bodied, 88 points from me. At $11 an awesome value.

    red:
Chateau Pierrail, Bordeaux Superieure 2004 (France): a smooth and delicate Merlot dominated Bordeaux, that is drinking extremely well right now. 88 points from me. About $13. Great Bordeaux value.

Tonight, I tried Stonecap Cabernet 2004 from Columbia Valley, WA, just bought at the PA LCB for $7. Color is just starting to amber, nose has a touch of pomegranate and tar, medium/light body with flavors of vanilla and cocoa bean, short finish.

I suspect this is a closeout price on a wine that won’t age well much longer, but drinks like a bargain now.

    Thanks Gary

In Hong Kong my two favourite under US$13 wines are

Mont Tauch Fitou (http://www.mont-tauch.com/)- the whole range is exceptional value.
Peter Lehmann Barossa Semillon (http://www.peterlehmannwines.com.au/) – Barossa ledgend and maker of outstanding wines. Barrosa Semillon is one of Australia’s under-rated bargains.

Both are commercially avaliable and both are excellent.

    Cheers

Value wines can be hard to find!

Q-Had a Cotes du Rhone that was quite good, forget the name, sorry.

Good show! I am going to have to try and find that Spanish white.
I have had the Pillar Box on several occasions and in several different vintages, I can’t keep it in the house ling because my wife drinks it all up. It has great parents – Henry’s Drive which makes a standard and reserve wine – real good stuff.

QOTD – I had a Cotes du Rhone recently that was fairly decent for the price, it was either the Perrin, or the Chapoutier.

Well, nothing great under $13 in the last month, but I had two favorite $13 wines last year – Tres Picos 05 (the 06 is a bit sweeter and not as appealing to me) from Boraso Spain, and Gruet, my favorite everyday sparkler. Normally both are around $15, but you can find for $13 if you try.

I’m just catching up on episodes. Great show. Given the market’s nose dive, value/economy wines are always good to have in the stable.

QOTD: Mas de Guiot Grenache/Syrah. About $8

QOTD: Lately I’ve really been enjoying Torres Vina Brava 2007 Tempranillo, which my local grocery store carries for less than $8. I also really like Twin Vines 2007 Vinho Verde for $6, mainly because it’s got bubbles. I’m cheap that way.

Ahhhhhhh! The Oak Monster!!!!!! He’s one scary dude- I had a scary experience just recently too…I feel your pain.

QOTD: I’ve had a lot since being in France, even with the euro- dollar exchange. Wine is so inexpensive here that it’s even cheaper than Coke!

Hey Gary cool show, keep up the value stint!

QOTD: Being in Japan it’s tough to find good wines for cheap- it often seems like you need to start around 1600-2000 yen (~$15-$19) to get anything serious; however I was pleasantly surprised by the 2006 Montes Alpha Chardonnay from the Casablanca Valley in Chile, which set me back only 880 yen; my girlfriend loved the acidity and spiciness- definitely not your run-of-the-mill Chardonnay- and the substantial weight and heat on the back end slayed me (unlike you I’m a sucker for the heat!).

Felt the same way about the Pillar Box red, not amazing, but at least it didn’t break the bank.

Hacksaw Jim Duggan!!!! One of the best analogies I’ve heard in a really long time! Braves were everyone’s team in the early 90’s because of the worst to first years. I had those holograms on everything!

QOTD: Under $13 steal! Antis Malbec from Mendoza! I had a bottle of 02 Neal the night before I tried the Antis and it really had many of the qualities the Neal was showing. I did allow the Antis to open up for about 6 hours before drinking it. Dark Fruit wrapped in the smell of a forest after a hard summer rain, really well integrate oak, and long chained silky tannin. The Neal was much more balanced and complete but its still hard to justify the 500% price difference.

Keep up the good work Gary!

Another excellent episode. First of all having seen Episode 552 I was very intrigued to see Gary’s remarks about the Anne-Francoise Gros Pommard and that he liked it – since I have purchased a 2002 Vosne-Romanee Aux Reas by the same producer, and that wasn’t cheap either.

I am definitely going to look out for that first Spanish wine – sounded great.

QOTD – the 2005 Chateau Pech-Latt from Corbieres and (I hope this is right) 2005 Chateau St. Eulalie La Liviniere from Minvervois. Both wines were blends of syrah, grenache, mourvedre, and carignan, and priced at $12.50 since southern French wines are a tough sell (both 50% off). Too bad, they were both worth their original price. Nice and warming, lots of structure and fruit, complexity, and great with hearty food (in this case minestrone soup). When it gets cooler outside, it’s hard not to love a nice full-bodied red wine.

Trying the 2006 Pillar Box Red now. It is ok. For less money, I might go with a 2007 Anakena Carmenere from Chile. I’m still searching for a good full-bodied red that is under $10.

Thanks for trying to bring some value once again to the show. I know its something I need to look into even though I dont mind dropping $50 on a bottle. Too bad it was a 1-4 day. We’ll call the one hit a walk-off home run so everyone is happy. QOTD: Dont recall drinking too many wines under $13 recently. I still need to start catalouging the wines I drink.

I had a Chateau Bonnet (Entre-Deux-Mers blanc) the other day for $10.59: 50% SB, 40% Semillon, 10% Muscadelle. It brought a little thunder, just a flash– not too complex but solid and easy-drinking like the Martin Codax Albarino is.

Still working my way through old episodes! When are you coming out to Sonoma next?

You can get pretty decent Rieslings for under seven dollars in Seattle and Tacoma. They’re all from the Columbia Valley. The better ones you have to actually go East to get in Chelan AVA and other smaller craft oriented vineyards. Its a shame more people don’t grow them in Puget Sound AVA, though the few efforts are promising. Check it out!
