Greatest Tag Team? Nikolai Volkov claimed to be singing the Russian National Anthem at the beginning of every match, but it was Cara Mia.

I would have to say that the greatest Tag Team of all time was the duo of Big John Studd and Mr. #1derful Paul Orndoff.

    Great Show.

Can’t think of a better night to drink a lot of wine. Secret pack gets my vote!

Excited for the secret pack episode.

QotD — never had a 100% Touriga Nacional. The table wines made from blends of Port grapes I had in the 90s were pretty odd. The few I’ve had recently have been decent

Top 10, so pumped, first time.

QOTD: Haven’t had one but very much looking forward to it.

    GO STEELERS!

i need to bust out the portueese wines. i am in switzerland and there is a huge contigency from portugal here. so when there are populations, the wine follows. in wine shops and super markets, there are tons of bottles under $15. i just always go to france, italy and spain.
i am going to get a bottle this week

Happy Friday! Love the show especially ones from regions that don’t get the credit they deserve.

QOTD: No, I have not but sure to add this one to my Centurion list.

Have a great weekend and good luck to the Jets. 30-17 (Raiders stink)

    Cheers!

P.S. Looking forward to the Secret Pack. I’ll need it to drown my sorrows if Obama wins.

    I’m #14… I try harder!

Cool show on great wines! Touriga’s, to me, are like a cross between a syrah and a cab, sometimes with a little of that zinfandel jammyness thrown in. Big wines, great for some bbq ribs or a steak, and killer, of course, in a port!

QOTD – can’t remember the last one I had since I have only had a few, but I liked them both. Thurston Wolfe, a Columbia Valley winery, does a “JTW Port” from the Columbia Valley, of all places, which has Touriga Nacional in it, and it rocks. Cheers!

  17. October 17, 2008

    Neil

QOTD: Never tried a Touriga Nacional. I have a feeling I’m going to need more than wine on November 4th. How about a secret bourbon pack?

  18. October 17, 2008

    sam

    Wazzup!

I must share that I love Portugal for many reasons. The wine is great, but so is the history and the people.

QOTD: No Touriga Nacional tonight, but what about Baga? I love the Marquês De Marialva, both for the price and the quality.

    Keep up the hard work…

P.S. Picked up the book, finally…inspiring intro by the way…

    Cheers!

Bring in more Portuguese reds!!!! (ok, calming down). We had two different tastings in the past year that highlighted said reds. In both cases typically chatty groups grew quiet as they started sipping. The wines, especially the 2003 Casal de Loivos stunned people with their quality to price point. To repeat: bring in more Portuguese reds!!

  21. October 17, 2008

    Steve

Never had a Touriga, but will look for one in my wine shop. Hey, here’s the Super Bowl: Jets vs. Redskins. Even though I love GV, I’ll be shouting all up in his grill piece when Clinton Portis runs through his defense! Yah!

QOTD: I’ve had reds from Portugal but don’t know if they were Touriga Nacional. In any case, I’ve enjoyed at least 75-80% of them, including the ones that were slightly port-like(Baby Port). I have the Chryseia, but haven’t tried it yet.

I like the plaid shirt. A nice change from the striped shirts.

Everyone, please vote before having the secret pack tasting parties. I repeat, vote before drinking. Thanks.

QOTD: I have had plenty of Touriga Nacional, both 100% and blends. I’ve liked about half of them and the other half were meh. Some of the meh wines had a heavy port smell on the nose, makes sense.

  30. October 17, 2008

QOTD: have had a few touriga national and blends and have yet to be disappointed. Definitely a big fan of these wines.

    Hey Gary,

We need to get your Secret packs delivered to the Liquor control Borg of Ontario. I am sure plenty of folks in Ontario would jump all over them.
If you need a distributor for your secret packs let me know.
We need to find a way to make this available to Canadians.

G, Why couldn’t you have done this show like a month ago. I was in Lisbon 3 weeks ago for about 5 days. It was a structured trip so I couldn’t venture out to taste, but I could have used the knowledge when ordering the vino. I also spent a few days in the Madiera Island…it was siiiick. Keep it flowin!–jc

Touriga Nacional will be a noble grape variety in the near future.

  44. October 17, 2008

why does Portuguese wine need french, or american oak, damn the internationalization of wine, damn it all.

yo have you tried that romanescu broccoli?

  45. October 18, 2008

    T. Bone

Love those Portuguese wines. TN and the blends they’re doing now are rocking. Such good wine for reasonable prices. Wish I could find more of it around.

Gonna suggest this again, maybe it’s not possible, but… Could you put the price-at-taping and your score on the wine list on the page? Would be nice to check those out without having to scan through the episode to remind myself. And, anyway, sometimes my brain just turns off when you say the price. Maybe that’s why my credit card bill is as high as it is? Dang.

You should take more calls during the show, that’s cool. You could do a call-in segment even, old-school for us fogies in the audience.

  46. October 18, 2008

    jfletch

I tried the So about a week ago…couldnt agree with you more GV! What a fantastic wine. I will absolutely be drinking much more of the Touriga.

  47. October 18, 2008

    apj_bobswineguy

This wine is sexy…….but not a slut! That goes into my tasting notes hall of fame next “lap-dance on my tongue’ from RP. Also, really funny that after all your fame & notoriety you still have to answer to the wife…pick something up on the way home. Love it.
QOTD – never tried a touriga still wine. And I get to taste lots & lots of wine. I’ll have to ask my distributors about that. That SO sounded really interesting.
ps – sold some of Charles Smith K-Syrah Cougar Hills & the Ovide tonight. Great feedback from the guests. Different tbls.

    Craig G.

I have not tried a Touriga Nacional yet. I will be in the area so I will stop by to pick one up at WL.

Looking forward to the election party!

You have to try the TN from Quinta do Carneiro, also great stuff. Very good price/relationship during the whole range

  52. October 18, 2008

    Smahlatz

QOTD : Had one from DAO region. very poor – flabby, almost oxidised tasting – like some bad argentinian malbec I’ve had before. Another I tried had brg=ight fruit but little else to say really. Hard to find values in the UK, I’ve got some Quinta De La Rosa, Duoro Riserva, which I am hoping will bring some thunder, I just feel I need to leave it a while, but I did spy the winery’s second wine available at my local supermarket, so that might be a good intro – I’m determined to find some quality.

  53. October 18, 2008

    OzJeff

QOTD: The best Touriga Nacional I have found so far is a 2003 Quinta do Vale Meao “Meandro”. Actually, like a lot of Portuguese wines it a blend with Tinto Roriz, Touriga Franca and Tinta Barroca. (The Portuguese have a load of their own grape varietals, which is fun if you like to explore :-) This was my tasting note from around a year ago.

Deep inky red purple. Well ripened warm spicy dark cherries. There’s a bit of cut grass that was mown a few days ago. (This is maybe the aroma of fresh oak barrels). Even a touch of citrus, like orange. On the palate you get smooth rich fruits with spiky acid and rough strong tannins. Very long finish. This wine needs more time. It’s great now but could last much longer. This is a nice complex wine. 90pts

  54. October 18, 2008

    OzJeff

Oh, I forgot to say. The wine comes from the Porto e Douro and cost 15.00 EUROs.

  55. October 18, 2008

    vinicious

    hello,

im a portuguese enophile… or a wine lover. its good to know that the good portuguese wine are breaking the barriers of the wine circuits.

Gary, i saw the video, and i just whant to teel, there are more great portugueses to taste, not so touriga nacional, but also touriga Franca, Baga, malvasia, arinto and many more portuguese grapes, with somo divine flavours.
just look for one of this brands, duas quintas, quinta da loba, esteva, casa de santar, cabriz, periquita, or a Barca Velha 2000. the best recent vintages wore the 2000, 2001 and 2003 years. just give a try.

i recomend also the green wines “vinho Verde” of the loureiro and alvarinho grapes, the some kind of sparkling white wine, and very very fresh, just try it. just look for one of this brands alvarinho, muralhas, ponte de lima coop, quinta da aveleda…

any more info or help about portuguese wines just mail.

    see you

  56. October 18, 2008

    David Dadekian

QOTD: Never had one, will look to see if there’s one on the wine list at dinner tonight (I’m thinking unlikely).

    Hello Mott!

  57. October 18, 2008

An excellent EP Gary and THANK YOU for the shout out! QOTD: Have not tried one but I am pumped about your description for both. Perhaps I’ll see you in the store today.

    Hi Gary,

Loved the “So”. Has it at a Portugal wine tasting last year. Highly recommended it. Was listed at $25, so your sale price is a steal. Here is my review of it.

Have only had a few TNs but what I have had were really solid. Keep pumpin’ out the content, G…it’s good stuff.

  63. October 18, 2008

    Kirk

QOTD: I’ve had several Torigua Nacional based wines…I love them…but they tend to need a little time in the bottle to smooth out a little. Probably one of the best ones that I’ve ever had was the 2001 Quinta do Crasto Reserva old vines…lovely stuff.

  64. October 18, 2008

    E dog

QOTD: never had a touriga nacional, but it sounds like my kind of wine.

  65. October 18, 2008

Another good show…hope you’ll be getting the So Touriga wine back in stock. Went to order some this morning…sold out :(

QOTD: Never heard of Touriga Nacional before watching the show last night (on my Apple TV)…

  66. October 18, 2008

    Derek F.

QOTD: Yes I have had Touriga Nacional because I am a BIG lover of Porto wines.

  67. October 18, 2008

    Dan & Erin

QOTD: No Portuguese wines yet, but we shall try some now.

Gary, thank you so much for the shoutout regarding my birthday. We are huge Vayniacs and that was a great surprise from my husband to me. Incidentally… I travel to Morris Plains for work occasionally (we live in MI, which is a huge bummer since you can’t ship here currently) and I am hoping at some point you will actually be in the store during the week while I’m there so I can say hello.

    Thanks for another great episode!

  68. October 18, 2008

    KAHUNA

I have had both of those wines and agree they are both very good- And Rhodes is OK

You can run for president Obama wasn’t born here either! Go for it-

QOTD: I haven’t yet tried this varietal, ports aside, but I’m headed down to my wine store to remedy that situation.

  70. October 18, 2008

Sorry Kahuna, but Hawaii is in fact part of the U.S.

  71. October 18, 2008

    hmoreira

Actually “Só” means Only in Portuguese. Also Só “Touriga Nacional” is from “Terras do Sado” Region (south of Lisbon) not from Douro. It’s a lovely wine but you should try the Touriga Nacional from the Dão Region. Like for example “Quinta da Pellada”, and “Casa de Santar”, “Quinta dos Roques”

From the region “Terras do Sado” you can find one of the best sweet wines in Portugal – Moscatel de Setúbal. Made manly from “Moscatel de Alexandria” and also from a very rare grape varietie “Moscatel Roxo”.
    Give it a try.

  72. October 18, 2008

    sharon

My son sent me a bottle of “porto from Porto”. It was fabulous. Haven’t tried the Touriga yet…but I’m on it. Can’t wait to order the secret pack and cheer for Obama on election day!

  73. October 18, 2008

    Joe Zodda

Gary…listened to you tout these Portugese wines( especially the 2003 So touriga) yet bummed that they were already sold out. Anymore on the way??

  74. October 18, 2008

    Deano

Gary Great episode….i need to go seek out some Portuguese wines :)

    QOTD:
    -Not yet

  75. October 18, 2008

QOTD – I don’t think so, maybe? Sounds good to me, though!

    Hi there Mott!

    Go Steelers.

  76. October 18, 2008

    Kelly Goff

Gary, great show as usual. I love that you didn’t get all macho when you answered the phone like most men would do! I think I have had a portugese red, but not sure if it was this grape? I liked it though, and I will seek more out for these prices! Thanks….

  77. October 18, 2008

    Lawrence Leichtman

Wanted to buy the Touriga Douro but it is all gone. I have had the Nacional and I really liked it. Bought two bottles at WL. What happened with Ustream. Went on for the first time today to see a live show and it was blurred out. What gives?

  78. October 18, 2008

    Lawrence Leichtman

Forgot to say. go vote before the wine tasting 11/4

  79. October 18, 2008

All in for the secret pack. I hope I have reason to celebrate on election night, but if not, 3 bottles of wine ought to help me drown my sorrows.

Hey Gary thought this episode was great. Just wondering if you have ever tried any wines from the Azores, seeing as they are a part of Portugal.

QOTD: Just in Port and some blends, I don’t think I’ve had 100%. Went to the Illinois rout of Indiana with my dad, and we had some wine the night before. Have a nice weekend guys!

  83. October 19, 2008

    Gary -

Good show! QOTD: Never had a dry Touriga before. I hopefully will be picking up a bottle of tawny port (maybe a Dow Colheita) at my local wine-shop tomorrow, so I’ll look for a Touriga Nacional while I’m there.

  84. October 19, 2008

This was the WOTM over on the forums like, a year ago …

    http://tv.winelibrary.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8481

I liked it ok, but honestly I’ve had mixed results with affordable Portuguese wines (I had a Cerejeiras that was just horrid), and I haven’t cracked any of my Bagas yet as I’m not entirely sure how to help it do its best.

As for what to open and toast President Obama with: is it too early for a 2000 Haut Bages Liberal, or would it be more appropriate to grab something from Washington?

  85. October 19, 2008

    manonthemoon

Nice show, I always mean to try some portuguese, but never do.

QOTD: I have tried a few blends, but no single varietal from Portugual.

    Hey WLTV!
Just found you on the web.
    It’s a great show and a great concept. You’re making a
lot of folks feel at home in wine world.
(Treacherous waters in the days of Yor)

Thanks for beefing up my notes on Touriga Nacional.
I look forward to working my way through the Archives.

Just love Touriga Nacional; It’s my favorite Portuguese grape. Love the chocolate in the So. The “So” happens to be one of our Uncle’s House Wines! Excellant! Go Tio!

Had some other good Portuguese wines(about 5, don’t remember the names as they were too long) at our little cousins first birthday last week. Nice!

  89. October 19, 2008

    thefaamakesmedrink

    Gary Vee,

I have not yet had a Touriga Nacional. Maybe soon. Perhaps it will appear in my ‘blue state’ Secret Pack.

I have a question o’ the day for you. Have you ever watched your boy, The Iron Shiek, during any of his hate-filled diatribes currently available on YouTube?

While I find them endlessly fascinating and incredibly outrageous, they are NOT for the faint of heart or the easily offended. Freud would have a field day with this loon…

    Regards,

    Freddie Blassie

  90. October 19, 2008

    BobbyTiger

Nope. Never had a Touriga. This might be the time to purchase several bottles to drown my sorrows in on election night, when I fear McCain might loose.

  91. October 19, 2008

    Noobie! :) .

It’s just outrageous! When i first saw the Wine Library TV i could not belive it :) . I’m a wine-loving-noob inspired by Oz and James Big Wine Adventure series to try some new things and get the science right. I’m only starting to build my pallete (is that how you spell it? :) ) and after watching a few episodes i think you set me up on the right track. I mean – i thought this all notes thing was a hoax. I didn’t taste anything… until just recently, when I got a glass of wine, tasted it (smelling doesn’t work as well as i’d like it to… yet), and thought – hell, i can taste cherries here! whoa!. So Gary – big thanks to you for doing what you’re doing i think it’s amazing :) .

P.S. as for the question of the day – i tried to find some wines from portugal with Touriga Nacional’s but i couldn’t (and that’s weird, if it is supposed to be their own nacional grape). Will try though :) .

    Ellon

    Hi,

For all you Touriga Nacional “recent” fans, you should definetly search for wines from the Dão Region (Portugal)…thats where the real thunder is!!!!

    Quinta dos Roques T.N. 2005
    Quinta da Pellada T.N. 2004
    Carrocel 2003/2006
    Quinta das Marias T.N. 2005/2006
    Quinta do Perdigão T.N. 2004

Gary, why not a program focus on the Dão region? You wont regret it..this region is coming strong after the Douro region 1st place position in Portugal!!!!

    Keep it up

Just had a 2005 Neal Cabernet the other day. I thought it was excellent. I know you weren’t asking about Cabernet today.. But I don’t give a shit.

  105. October 20, 2008

    Mr.Ambassador

I started sampling Portugese wines after an early wine-library recommendation and certainly agree that they bring great flavor at a terrific value. I’ve tried all the wines from Portugal that our local wine shop and grocer carry and keep checking back to see if anything new has appeared. Duoro is a fun region to explore and I was particularly fond of some red blends from that area. When we brought in a Vinho Verde for a staff oyster/wine night it went over quite well.

Wish you could ship the secret packs to Washington State so we could join in with the secret-pack tasting.

  106. October 20, 2008

    Karl Laczko

Hey Gary, been a while (I’ve so much catching up to do)! Although I know how good the next wave of Portuguese reds are meant to be I was shocked to find out how little of them I’ve drank….
QOTD – no straight Touriga Nacional and only had one blend with Nacional in the mix. I do have 3 Douro blends in the cellar though.

  107. October 20, 2008

    SteveF

Nice show Vayner, thank you for the info on Portuguese reds.

QOTD: Zero Zilch I must give them a try.

  108. October 20, 2008

    Scottie P

QOTD: Never had a Touriga before; though I’m not into Port that much.
I may have to rig another PA shipment scheme for a secret pack…

P.S. Thanks Gary, Keep up the great work!
P.S.S. This will certainly be an intersting election, not for the faint of heart!!!

  111. October 21, 2008

    Jack Hull

I bought from the Wine Library the CARM Grand Reserve which is supposed to be 100% Touriga Nacional. This wine was super well made and one of the best that I have ever had. At $30.00 bucks, if it was made in France or Cali it would retail for $100.00 bucks. Cheers.

Awesome show gary. I think this is among some of your most hyper yet on point, interesting “performances” (^_-)

QOTD: No I haven’t gotten to try Touriga Nacional yet (- -);; Unfortunately liquor stores in Tokyo don’t often stock non-desert Portuguese red wines.
Will try one as soon as I get the chance though!

  118. October 22, 2008

    Harry

QOTD: I’ve had a few, but found them only so-so, lacking depth. I’ll have to keep on tasting. Great show, great energy.

Great show – again, value from Portugal. Ya gotta love it!!

I like a lot of wines on the Iberian peninsula.

  125. October 25, 2008

    Thanks Gary

QOTD: Think I’ve had the grape a few times, but always in Dao blends… I’m a big fan of Portugese wines and stocking up on new bottles is always a highlight of visiting Macao.

    Pastafari Pirate

QOTD: but of course! T-Nac is one of my main grapes these days. I got turned onto it from some cheapo $5 and $6 wines I ordered from you on a whim, that BLEW ME AWAY. I was just in your store yesterday – made the drive up from Balmer – and dropped $500 on wine, including SIX more T-Nacs from my Portugal homies. BTW, your staff was awesome, great help at the store – my first time there.

I’m glad You came back and told the world about the Potugies golden catch. Thats something else than “The Jammy American Cab. Sav.” oked up to get some caraters.
Keep up looking fore treasures in Europe. Why not look down to Burgenland in Austria, and their Zweigeldt. Espesially along the North-West side of Neusiedler See.
    _Thanks fore a great show!

  128. October 27, 2008

    aaronb

QOTD: Nope, never had a TN. Had a couple of Portuguese varietals, but they were all locally grown (Sierra Nevada).

  129. October 28, 2008

    Chris

I’ve only had 1 of these wines… it was decent, very concentrated and kind of oaky… not bad for the 9 bucks I paid.

I am curious as to how these wines are categorized though, like Grand Cru, Riserva, etc… Never got a straight answer about this section of the country and/or the wines produced there. Very interested.

  130. October 28, 2008

    MattUD

I have not had one yet, but definatly something I want to get into. Good stuff as usual.

  131. October 30, 2008

Dude, awesome show I’m going to buy one the next time I’m out shopping. QOTD: I don’t believe so.

  136. November 22, 2008

    Ray Barnes

Good episode as usual, nice to see Portugese table wine getting some props.

QOTD – As a stand alone varietal, no, but as part of a blend, yes, and was very happy with it. It was also inexpensive for the quality.

  137. November 29, 2008

    OSCAR FALCON LARA

Great show Gary. We went to a Portuguese wine tasting event last night (nov 28) and the best of the night was definitely the Touriga Nacional, from Herdade Dõ Sporão. On the nose the first thing I noticed was Gorgonzola, not kidding, it was a wild wine, awesome and well rounded, and you could say that you felt it stay in the mouth and not pass in high alcohol content through the throat, quite a nice wine. the taste was intense, with guava, chocolate, cherry and pepper hints… I bought a three pack. Good stuff.

The sommelier, Joao Cavaco also recommended a Vinho Verde, he said that we should drink it cold or chilled since that would bring out the best in it. I hope you find the time to put it on a next show.

  138. December 13, 2008

    José Artur Matos

I´m Portuguese, from Douro (north), and a see your program many times.I like de informality of your show, de positive way how you comunicate.
Of course that I apreciate that you like Touriga Nacional and in general portuguese wines. I can sugest other wines like: Poeira, Batuta, Aciprestes, Vale da Raposa, Quinta do Valado, Vinha Grande, Lavradores de Feitoria (…). Very good wines, nice price.
    PS sorry the bad english

  139. December 22, 2008

    Sharon

Hey, it’s me leaving a comment way after the fact again. I just go in catch-up mode.
QOTD: Well, I’ve had Port, so I’ve probably had Touriga Nacional! Yup. Never had as table wine though.

  140. January 24, 2009

    Dessert Wine Nerd

Nice to see wines other than port from Portugal bring the thunder!!… My family and I are doing alright, and I wish the same to you. QOTD: Had tons of it in ports, which I drink quite a bit, but never in a straight up wine. After this show I may have to!

  141. March 23, 2009

    Tania Branco Oliveira

    Hi Garry!
I’m really pleased with your opinion about portuguese wines and portuguese grapes!
I just want you to know that the wine that you liked so much is not from the Douro region. “So Touriga Nacional” is a wine from Terras do Sado. It’s a designation of origin near lisbon with amazing wines.
Keep up with your good work and taste more portugueses wines!

  142. May 13, 2009

    Duarte Aguiar

    Gary,

Alentejo wines specifically from the Evora region of the Alentejo continuously bring pizzaz and the long finish that you long. I agree with what your saying about portuguese wines. Maybe i have a prejudice as well, being Portuguese myself, but Portugal is consistently putting out wines that really wow me. Wines that are priced like your average table wine, but intense enough to pair with high end cheeses, meats, or drinking alone. Quinta de Cabriz is another wine priced about $6 a bottle that is as complex as a possible $20 or $30 bottle.

    Keep the Portuguese thunder comin!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Duarte Nunes Aguiar
