QOTD Belated: Of course it was a good idea and Jancis; anyone on your website forum who thought it was a silly idea needs to rethink their philosophies on wine and life in general - Gary - you know what I'm talking about.

    Fantastic idea! Great Show!
  • I enjoyed the programme and was thrilled by all the talking about Sherry. Right decision Jancis!

Finally got around to viewing this episode. Gary and Jancis balance each other wonderfully, like Jacques Pepin & Julia Child. Bring her back soon, and often!
    Thanks, Jancis!

    QOTD: uh huh
  • richardvinifera
    QOTD: No doubt!
  • It was a great idea!! although we can read a lot from Jancis, I don't think we get the opportunity too often to see her as casual as here. Thanks to you both, great show!!
  • hollisdevillo
i have a crush on jancis now.

It was a great idea. As a wine neophyte (regular Gary watcher now since May of this year), I did not know who Ms. Robinson was. Now I not only know who she is, I know where I can find even more opinions and information about wine (on her web site). I'm sure Ms. Robinson just harvested a whole bunch of new wine enthusiasts from this patch that has been lovingly sown and cultivated by Mr. Vaynerchuck. Kudos on the NYT piece, by the way Gary.
  • It was an excellent idea. Thank you for this.
  • It was an excellent idea. Thanks, Gary.
Jancis, you are charming and passionate.
Thank you for the shout out to the $8 - $20 category of wine.
This was a very informative and enjoyable episode. Could have been a few hours longer.
  • That was a great show with two of the top personalities in the wine world. Really enjoyed the conversation about Sherry and the general wit and intelligence that came out of Gary and Jancis.

I've been saving this file for a long time until I had the forty-five minutes to devote to watchig the ep and yes, Jancis, this was a good idea. Easily, the best of the more than 700 episodes of WLTV. The back and forth between Gary and Jancis was engaging, a lot of excellent info was imparted, a love of wine was affirmed and the time flew by. Would that you could have her on annually for an update.
Every wine enthusiast should see this show. Congratulations!

    Hi Gary

It was a great idea. The british need to get out of the box and just the writing about wine. The internet has opened new areas for people to learn and love wine. The british need to get into video blogging more.Th is is the new media and yes writing will always have a good market but video is very powerful.
  • QOTD: Very good idea Jancis!
  • Matt
ahem...Gary I think you should go to England for a follow up show!
  • Matt
QOTD: Hell yeah it was a good idea!

    I think you should go

This was a show that brought definite thunder to me. Mrs. Jancis Robinson is an outstanding guest and person in the wine world. She really knows her stuff. She is also quite witty, with her typical brit humour. I just love that. To me, this is much more the type of guest i like than those two college humour guys. Again, like Gary says, It all about expanding your pallatte and having fun doing it. I love also the more zany shows like 2 buck chuck episode or the outdoors in winter tasting show, but to me, and that is just me, shows like this one and one of the last ones with the winemaker for Mersault are absolute gems. I will absolutly try a Sherry very soon, wich i've never done.

QOTD:It was a great idea and i hope that everybody who go on your website think it is too.
  • I think closing in 500 replies proves it was a brilliant idea, and honestly I'd love to see her on the show as often as she wants.

Way late here but it is funny I have been reading the oxford Companion recently and finding out about Jancis too. Shocked to see her on the show and very happy to listen in to some serious geeks talk!

Great idea to come on and great to here your thoughts and views of, well, just everything!

    Thanks Both!!
  • J Mize
QOTD: It was a great idea, the wine world needs both the serious side and the out of the box side, both sides are passionate and are appreciated!
  • Derek Sneed
Answer of the Day: Great Idea!!!! From one of your loyal "lurkers"
  • Yes, it was a good idea.
  • Melissa
Yes, it was a very wise decision to come on the show. This is my new favorite episode. I wish I'd seen it earlier!

We have some wonderful cheese here in the states! Being originally from Wisconsin, I must say that the cheeses there are fabulous! You're right, though. Why do we Americans go right to the cheesecake????
  • I am really thrilled to see one Greek wine amongst the 3 picks of the wine legend...Mrs JANCIS ROBINSON !!!

ARGYROS ESTATE with his ASSYRTICO 2007...made me proud!!
  • Dessert Wine Nerd
You two really worked well together and looked like you had a lot of fun. Thank you Ms. Robinson for sharing your passion and knowledge with us. Heres to you Ms. Robinson....... QOTD: Very good idea. Never pass a chance to sit in the hot seat on the Thunder Show!
  • CBone
QOTD: It was a great choice!

I must say, I am happy you finally tasted a Ridge wine. Some of my favorites, they are. Great show!
  • Stellar Idea!!!! Watching this a bit after it was aired, but just watched today's episode (Okanagan) and heard the reference and was so excited that I figured out a way to give 45 minutes to see my two favorite wine personalities together. Big huge THX to you both, this is a moment in my own personal wine history!!!! (god I sound like a cheesedork!)
  • GlennB
    Great show.

loved the Yank and the UK differences and thought the selection was interesting.

P grigio is over. look for many different options everyday.

Note: the Ridge zin is being made by Nephew of controversial Chef/ writer richard Olney (a guru/ friend of wine importer Kermit Lynch, chefs James Beard and Julia Child).

Great Idea the two of you had great chemistry.
  • yowens
Wow- Gv w JR! Awesome show, great to see Jancis. QOTD: Great idea, I'll follow your site
  • GV- you really startled her with your opening! I could listen to you guys talk all day long.

I think Gary's nose and palate are far superior. His flavor cues are more accessible and interesting. She doesn't refer to specific cues but uses words like "lush" which is not as accessible to novices.

Gosh, CdP's are beyond many of us.. QPR wise. Although, my parents toured wineries there forty some years ago and we opened a bottle after my father's funeral that had held up extremely well. (Considering it's storage over the years)

White Castle sliders.... hooting my *&%% off!
  • What a great episode- truly. My two favorite points were:
    1) Jancis' reaction to Gary's initial volume right at the start of the show.
    2) "My professor of video is Christopher Mott" (Gary in response to Jancis' reference to her Sherry guru as Gary's getting a little defensive about Jancis' comments about Sherry needing to be kept fresh by the retailer).
    Hilarious stuff.
  • luvgrapesqueezings
C'est bon!!! Yes, the show is definitely worthwhile!!!
  • joel delon
Thank you jancis for your very sophisticated and professional vision of the wine world
QOTD : you're right and shows everybody you're a free wine critic
    from south of france
  • Joel
    QOTD REPLY:

It was a very GENEROUS idea! Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I have just begun to truly learn about sherry, and know I feel I have much more to learn.

    Tremendous idea and guest GV!
  • Kimberly
I could not believe that Jancis Robinson was appearing on your show Gary! This is for sure the most important guest you have ever had on!! The show was amazing, one of the classics for sure. As always, Jancis was graceful and informative without ever seeming to "talk down" to anyone. Gary, you have hit the big time my friend!!!

QOTD: It was not at all a mistake to appear on the show, neophytes to the wine world need to know that legends like you exist Jancis! Your ability to convey complex ideas in an accessible fashion is unmatched! Also, your books helped me pas the International Sommelier Guild exams with flying colours, so thanks!
  • Jancis, you are the best.
Gary, you are in the big time now. In my book this is one of the classics.
This is one of those episodes when wine giants collide.
    thank you!
  • G
I know, I'm late. but to answer Jancis Robinson's question. yes. a big flavorful, bright lovely yes! and thank you...it lifted my hopes, I am currently at 3:18PST on the 24 of Nov, less than 3 hours away from taking my WSET advanced certification, thanks both of you for helping me to believe I could pass. Cheers! G
  • Alberto
Great show Gary, hope we could enjoy both of you again.
Never though Jancis Robinson, the "purple queen" that I read every friday on FT and also on her web site, would have the courage to appear on your show, this speaks very well of her, and it's no doubt a very nice compliment to your work as a wine critic.
    Well done.
