GV- you really startled her with your opening! I could listen to you guys talk all day long.

I think Gary’s nose and palate are far superior. His flavor cues are more accessible and interesting. She doesn’t refer to specific cues but uses words like “lush” which is not as accessible to novices.

Gosh, CdP’s are beyond many of us.. QPR wise. Although, my parents toured wineries there forty some years ago and we opened a bottle after my father’s funeral that had held up extremely well. (Considering it’s storage over the years)

White Castle sliders…. hooting my *&%% off!

What a great episode- truly. My two favorite points were:
    1) Jancis’ reaction to Gary’s initial volume right at the start of the show.
    2) “My professor of video is Christopher Mott” (Gary in response to Jancis’ reference to her Sherry guru as Gary’s getting a little defensive about Jancis’ comments about Sherry needing to be kept fresh by the retailer).
    Hilarious stuff.

    QOTD REPLY:

It was a very GENEROUS idea! Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I have just begun to truly learn about sherry, and know I feel I have much more to learn.

    Tremendous idea and guest GV!

I could not believe that Jancis Robinson was appearing on your show Gary! This is for sure the most important guest you have ever had on!! The show was amazing, one of the classics for sure. As always, Jancis was graceful and informative without ever seeming to “talk down” to anyone. Gary, you have hit the big time my friend!!!

QOTD: It was not at all a mistake to appear on the show, neophytes to the wine world need to know that legends like you exist Jancis! Your ability to convey complex ideas in an accessible fashion is unmatched! Also, your books helped me pas the International Sommelier Guild exams with flying colours, so thanks!

    Jancis, you are the best.
Gary, you are in the big time now. In my book this is one of the classics.
This is one of those episodes when wine giants collide.
    thank you!

Great show Gary, hope we could enjoy both of you again.
Never though Jancis Robinson, the “purple queen” that I read every friday on FT and also on her web site, would have the courage to appear on your show, this speaks very well of her, and it’s no doubt a very nice compliment to your work as a wine critic.
    Well done.

Fascinating episode (how late is this post??)
BUT, what interested me the most was the reaction toward Jancis from her normal audience against appearing on Gary’s show.
That pretty much sums up ‘old world’ wine producing countries as opposed to ‘new world’. Wine is associated very much with the monied classes (and whatever people might say it’s still an existing problem in Britain).
I love wine and am consistenly pissed off by the snobbery surrounding a drink which ought to be accessible and enjoyed by everyone.
I’m English, live in London and work within the specialist food industry and consider Gary to be a brilliant representative for wine.
    Keep it up!
    Chris

Wow, how amazing to have Jancis Robinson on the show! When I saw the title of the episode I was stunned! Such a good one- she is a wealth of knowledge and so incredible to hear her stories. Great guest!

QOTD: I sure think so. I think it worked quite well!

G money, you should have made her drink Pavie blind. Now that would have been interesting!!! I would love to have see the outcome since she’s not a big fan of this wine.

Wow! Wow! Wow! Now you just need to get that lawyer from Maryland on your show and you’ve really got something. :-)

Seriously, what a great show. It was so interesting to hear Jancis talk about wine and give her opinions. Wonderful show.

QOTD: Yes, Jancis, it was a great idea for you to come on the show. We know Gary can be, well, Gary, but you seemed to handle him quite well and he was clearly in awe of you anyway. Thank you for “bringing the thunder” as Gary likes to say!

Ok so I guess you can call me one of the “lukers” who just had to come out and comment on this episode. I’ve been a fan of Gary’s for a while and I would place this as one of the top 2 of all time (the number one slot obviously going to Jim Krammer :-) . What a great episode. I didn’t know about Jancis before this but have become inspired to read and learn more about her. She had such an amazing level of class, grace and style as well as a keen sense of humor and knowledge of the wine world that I just found very inspiring. You need to have her on again Gary. Great great stuff.

One more thing. I tried signing up for her site and it seems to be down. I guess it must be all the Vayneacks flooding her system. Great work Gary. Keep it up.

and can we get a resolution on the pronunciation of her name? It’s obviously not Janet but I don’t think it’s Janis either. Help??

  15. November 15, 2008

    Syd

Yes, Janet it was a great idea doing the show. I greatly enjoyed your insight. Thanks for being patient with Gary.

Well, Gary, … I reloaded this episode for about ten times in the last few weeks and there certainly is one big (very BIG, HUGE even) reason for that: here you prove, for me, you are a ‘winelover with a voice’ to be cherished. It’s you just over and over again encouraging people to explore, to learn, to ‘build’ their palate. It’s the openess for nuance, the ‘follow your guts’ thing you’re doing here and I LOVE that. You’re not only encouraging people to do so, but doing it yourself confidently … . We have to few doing this in the wineworld!
QOTD: of course it was a superb idea and it came out just as I hoped it would. Great.
Jancis has always been a bit of a ‘winemom’ to me. Somebody who made me a winelover, then a winewriter and again a winelover. Someone you follow for so long a time, someone you learn so much of and then someone you think of: ‘nah, now it’s my time doing better’. But then, over and over again, I come back, get humbled, learn again, am reminded to follow my gut feeling, am reminded to write about what I love and not what people think I should love and thus write about.
It’s the love she imparts to fellow winelovers when writing about wine that makes Jancis unique.
So, ‘thanks’, is maybe the best thing we can say here … .

    You too Gary.

Jancis, you are the best; I’ve been a fan for over 20 years. I have many of your books and they are all great; even if its a pain, please don’t stop your revisions of the Oxford and the Atlas. I always gift the old versions to someone that wouldn’t otherwise buy them and they are always loved!

Gary, thanks for doing this. Best show ever.

Kudos Gary & Jancis. Much better job interviewing and listening to Jancis, Gary. She knows her stuff and is clearly operating on another wine level than most of us but Gary, you did a nice job of hanging in there with her.

    QOTD: A good call, Jancis.

Very enjoyable show…although it must have been one of the longest, time flew by. Having lived in UK, I know that the British really appreciate sherry a lot, so it was a very nice surprise to have one included in the programme. I would say : try to do that more often.
I don’t know whether you were nervous, Gary, but this time the interaction with your guest was just perfect!
QOTD : according to me, it was a brillant idea to do the show…unlike going to Jerez de la Frontera, please repeat in a while!

Best guest ever! Gary you did a nice job of not interrupting her, a nice adjustment since the Randall Grahm show. Well done.

    Q – Very good choice!

Gary & Jancis – fantastic episode! You should pair up more often. BTW, the blog Gary referred to is http://www.catavino.net, a terrific place for information on Spanish and Portugese wines.
