Monday’s child is fair of face.
Tuesday’s child is full of grace.
Wednesday’s child is full of woe.
Thursday’s child has far to go.
Friday’s child is loving and giving.
Saturday’s child works hard for a living,
But the child who is born on the Sabbath Day
Is bonny and blithe and good and gay.

    I’m a Monday…just really good looking.

Great show, Gary. Best interview of a guest you’ve ever done, in my opinion. I’ll run out and buy the Ridge zin.

  16. October 30, 2008

    Dale Cruse

Gary, I appreciate that you’re keeping the bottles away from the guest’s face this time! Well done!

This was an awesome show — Jancis and Randall in one week. Guess who is having the best week ever…….

QOTD: It was a fantastic idea Jancis! Great show Gary.

  20. October 30, 2008

    GregO

Wow! Thank you Gary and Jancis, what a great episode. I’m a huge fan of Jancis, and sherry, and a little bit of gary ;) …so that was just fantastic.

  21. October 30, 2008

    crank

    QOTD: FANTASTIC IDEA!

That was one of the top ten all-time shows.

  22. October 30, 2008

    Carlitos

    Wow! She really is here!

I’m on an airport in Alaska but I’m going to watch this RIGHT NOW!!!

  23. October 30, 2008

    Eliot (in the Lou)

I’m a Tuesday. What is “grace” in modern parlance? ;)

Awesome show! Jancis was far less Eurocentric than I expected. She showed well. I’d give her a 19 on the European scale. Is Michael Broadbent from Decanter still alive? Do you think he’d come on?

Love the Santorini wines. My wife and I were there in September and fell in love with the whites. I smuggled back a late harvest Nykteri – fantastic!

QOTD – Brilliant, Jancis! You just earned yourself a whole new fan base.

  24. October 30, 2008

    John Farrin

When you think about it Jancis was the original Gary, of course in a much more refined way :) But you both are QPR seekers and wine lovers, not snobs. Well buddy, it’s all down hill from this week :)

QOTD: It certainly was THE BEST for all of us. Hope it was good for you too.

  25. October 30, 2008

    Zinfreak

Wow! Great show Gary! I have one of her books!

Ridge is a powerhouse when it comes to zins. Always a safe bet when I see it on a wine list that its going to be goooood.

Thanks Jancis for coming in the show!

QOTD: Yes Yes Yes! A great idea!

  26. October 30, 2008

    Zinfreak

I think I’ll pull out “Vines Grapes & Wines” and give it another look!

  27. October 30, 2008

    Richard

This was wonderful! Thank you so much.

    QOTD: best idea ever!

  28. October 30, 2008

    Marc

    That was great!!!

QOTD: Thank you Jancis, it was a total pleasure…you did a good thing coming to visit the Vaynernation!

  29. October 30, 2008

    Bill

Best show ever. Been a fan of Jancis for decades. The Jancis Robsin wine course aired on PBS years ago. Sorry GV, you “gave it a go,” but you’re way, way out of your league.

qotd: Great idea. Only a snob would think otherwise.

  30. October 30, 2008

    RANDI

    GARY!!
OMG!! Jancis Robinson is brilliant and to see her here only makes me a bigger fan..of WLTV, YOU & JANCIS! I own her book “How To Taste”. Outside of my family & select friends, Ms. Robinson was the only “educator” of wine that I referenced or sought-out. Her style of not dictating what to drink and when and why…is much aligned with your philosophy. Thank you for bringing her!!!
    QOTD: ummmm…hellooo….. YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  31. October 30, 2008

    Griz4life

QOTD: Of course? Quite the lesson today. Loved it.

  32. October 30, 2008

    Dale Cruse

Gary, you know how you have “Our Favorite Episodes” on the far right of this page? Time to add another!

  33. October 30, 2008

    Dr T from N. Carolina

Gary — a great show, a great guest (don’t argue with her about sherry!) I think it was a great idea and thought this time the difference in approaches worked well

  34. October 30, 2008

    Dr. Dan

WOW…WOW…WOW. You weren’t kidding about a major WLTV guest. I just bought the World Atlas of Wine last week, and added it to the other big, fat wine book in my collection of two.

QOTD: It was good for US that Jancis appeared on WLTV. I can’t imagine that there’s anything that Jancis could do to damage her cred, even schlepping over to Springfield NJ. Not only a fabulously talented wine writer, but Jancis seems to be a very genuine and charming person as well.

  35. October 30, 2008

    Brandon M

    QOTD…ARE YOU KIDDING ME?

    Phenominal Idea.

  36. October 30, 2008

    Geoff

Great episode with a great guest! I can’t believe you got Jancis to come on the show. Keep up the good work, Gary!

    QOTD: Yes, definitely.

  37. October 30, 2008

    Paul Stonier

    Great Show!
QOTD: YES. Very good. I actually saw the bottom book at the store and got sucked in. Great to put a face and realize what a great person was writing such wonderful work.

  38. October 30, 2008

QOTD: it was the best idea you’ve ever had.

QOTD: Great show – perhaps the best ever. It looks like she put a bee in Gary’s bonnet about sherry! Will definitely check out her site.

Gary, what a fanastic show and great guest. One of the best ever episodes. Jlo31 (UK)

outstanding show!!! QOTD:When is part 2??

  43. October 30, 2008

    brorjace

When I first loaded up the page for today, I totally did a double take! Jancis is huge with me, I have read almost everything she has written (Including the whole Oxford Companion), so it was an awesome show for me. She handled herself very well, and definately kept it interesting. So yes Jancis, it was a great idea to come on the Thundershow! Hopefully this will get even more people to listen to your wisdom, you are one the best in the world!

  44. October 30, 2008

    Jon

Great show! Changed my life…j/k but really it was good. Im gonna go get her book tomorrow.

  45. October 30, 2008

    SurfCityJay

My first experience with Jancis was a show she did for TV Food Network when it debut I believe in 1993… that was a great a show and I always wondered WHY she would spit out the wine! What a newbie I was… ;-)

AWESOME show… GV, how are you going to top this…?

QOTD: It was a SMASHING success and we have been HONORED… It’s a bummer we could only hear her discuss 3 wines (actually 4 with the Pecorino… did she like that or what?)… SHE HAS TO RETURN!!!!!!!!!

    VV … u ROCK!

  46. October 30, 2008

    James H.

Amazing episode. It lived up to the hype.

QOTD: It was a great idea Jancis!

That was an awesome show. Very glad Jancis came on. What a absolute stunning level of knowledge she has to pass on to us. Thanks.

  48. October 30, 2008

    paryb

Wonderful show, it was great to see a guest with so much knowledge and passion for wine, even American wine, from the European circle.

QOTD: Jancis, I think it was a great idea for you to come on the Thunder show, your blog is going to explode with lots of new readers. (even though us Vayniacs are a little nuts)

  49. October 30, 2008

    TimInSpokane

    Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet show Gary V!!!

I knew the name, know I know the face. Way cool. And, I must say, your interview style here versus Randall Graham was SUPERB! Great give and take, Jancis was a joy, and the whole show was one of my most favorite.

It was DEFINITELY a monster idea to have her on the show. Hopefully the people from her world enjoyed seeing you as much as we enjoyed seeing her.

    Cheers!

qotd: It was a very very good idea, mad or not.

Thanks for another terrific guest. I loved all the info about sherry and its shelf life. Also, who knew it encouraged the appetite at a big meal? Very useful.

  51. October 30, 2008

    CW

only Beaujolais nouveau makes it to the shelves in the US with under 4 months age. You’d have go to spain and bring some back to get under the 4 month window.

  52. October 30, 2008

    KKinCA

    Gary;
Captain Ahab was an ambitionless banger who needed to spend a weekend at a Tony Robbins ‘goal-setting workshop’.
And he certainly wasn’t a closer.
But you, my friend, you– are ‘It’.
    What a treat!

A grateful and resounding ‘Yes’ to the QOTD.
I think it would be fitting to Retire the Bucket.

  53. October 30, 2008

    Snarf

QOTD: Is the Pope Catholic? Unless you are a fun-averting wine snob (not!), this was a good idea! Glad to know Jancis likes Ridge, like many of us!!!!!!!

  54. October 30, 2008

    TROC

How unusual, class on WLTV. The Ridge Geyserville is a great wine, along with his Paso Robles, and for 30(bones) its well worth it. Jancis was British class, and a pleasure to listen to. And Gary was very well behaved. Great show.

  55. October 30, 2008

I will sign up to Jensis’s web page now.

  56. October 30, 2008

    great great great show
    thanks so much

  57. October 30, 2008

    Terrance

    QOTD: Yes, yes, yes!

Sherry is one of my kicks. Last spring my mom visited me in Japan and we went to a Spanish restaurant. My mom had a sherry for the first time in her life and freaked out. I was worried that she wouldn’t be into them but she loved them.

But the four month thing and all the different types are confusing… it was great having Jancis clear some of that up. A phenom episode Gary.

  58. October 30, 2008

    Edward Salonia

    QOTD: Great Idea!

    Great show!

  59. October 30, 2008

QOTD: Great Idea ! Thanks for being on the show. Gary, great episode too. Regards, NCWT.

  61. October 30, 2008

    jahlove

QOTD: Hell yes! Great idea. That’s about the most non-interuptive I’ve ever seen Gary with a guest. You had him on his best behavior.

  62. October 30, 2008

    Slushpuppy

Obviously a very knowlegeble wine person, but lacking the passion to lay down in the sherry dust; how sexy that would be with most anyone~
    Smell it first!

  63. October 30, 2008

    HuskerJamie

QOTD: Great idea, Jancis. I think a lot of the younger people (i.e. me) watching WLTV don’t know much about great wine writers. You’re reaching a whole new market.

  64. October 30, 2008

    Marty

    QOTD: Yes! Iconoclasts!

Fab episode! My personal favorite. But, Gary, let the guest spit first.

  65. October 30, 2008

    John

Yes, it was an excellent idea to be on the show. I had never heard of you before this (shame on me!), and will now seek to find out more, because of your obvious expertise and erudition. I look forward to reading about your opinions on Ch. du Pape, one of my favorites – also curious about Sherry, as a lover of all things Spanish. Thanks for showing up and working with Gary. He was on good behavior today!

  66. October 30, 2008

    Kim G

What a show! QOTD: Yes, it was definitely worth it, Jancis, and do come back!

Pay her to get back weekly, Gary! You definitely have the spirit but her knowledge hurts in a very good way!

  67. October 30, 2008

    Richard

So rude to spit first! You should have a bucket for your guest. If not, they should spit first.

    Very poor!

    Otherwise, nice review.

  68. October 30, 2008

    Orion S.

QotD: It was an awesome idea!!! Great episode! I love getting input from two people who obviously know so much about wine.

it is always a great idea to have on a great Mind of WIne…..the first wine book I got was an Oxford Companion…it sits next to several of Hugh Johnson’s and Robert Parker’s books

But seriously Gary,,,I think British folk are far to reserved for your show,,,haha!

  74. October 30, 2008

    Antony

JANCIS! JANCIS & GARY!!! What a beautiful thing that just happened. As a Brit’ and old school Vayniac I find myself both delighted and super pumped. I’m aglow – it’s like the all time great tag team of wine. Beautiful.

Brilliant show!! It was a great idea. I will probably now follow Jancis’s blog. Her stories were great and Gary, you really tamed yourself from the last guest appearance. Kudos. Loved the questions from Gary posed toward Jancis.

Wow, I’m getting a little of that “Mrs Robinson feel” She’s hot! Know the books but never saw the beauty behind them. Elegance goes along way with this young guy (38)lol. She is the whole package!!

Oh no you didn’t serve Jancis Robinson adolescent Sherry. Good call on the Ridge props.

QOTH: Good?!…I would say absolutely *inspiring*. Really a fantastic show. Through 550+ shows I have never seen Gary so awestruck and excited.

Congratulations Gary, WLTV has really come to an amazing place to have guests such as Jancis (and recently Randall Grahm and Charles Smith) appear almost regularly. Also, you’ve got a great balance between shows with guests and solo. Thanks for all the work.

  91. October 30, 2008

    ScottEJ

Thanks for reminding me to dust off some Ridge for T-Day. It’s almost as much a ritual as the bird.

QOTD: Like anything to do with wine, it’s always a good idea to try and do something different.

Thank you both for sharing the knowledge.

  92. October 30, 2008

    torquey

This episode was hands down the best in the history of Wine Library TV. Jancis is the supreme goddess of wine and we should all grovel at her feet.

QOTD: Yes Jancis, it was a stupendously good idea to grace WLTV with your presence. Please promise that you’ll make another appearance.

  93. October 30, 2008

    Bobby Bo

QOTD: GREAT IDEA! Yet another great show. I cant think of another show that does a better job with their guests. The format is open, and you sit and drink wine. Hopefully having some wine royalty on the Thunder show will really bring more people together over wine.

  104. October 30, 2008

QOTD…Coming on the show may not have been a popular thing for Jancis to do, but it increased my wine knowledge a great deal in a very short time span. I have to admit that before today I had never: heard of Jancis Robinson, heard of Corison winery, thought of Greek white wines as being very good, thought of ever purchasing a sherry, and lastly thought of Ridge as a great wine producer. Thanks for opening up my eyes and expanding my palate. Jancis Robinson is changing my wine world.

  105. October 30, 2008

    wtvLurker

qotd: smashing! it was great to get to see you. unflappable, you are a true master. so relaxed and confident like the Ridge you spoke of. i loved it when you said you smelled the cheese the moment you entered the store.

QOTD: Great that you were on the show!!! Love your books!!! You have taught me so much about wine!!
PS: Jancis you are so gorgeous!!! A REAL WOMAN!!!!!! XO

QOTD – Great Idea!! I’m not sure what those folks on your forum were thinking of when they said they thought this would be a disaster – but they were wrong!

  116. October 30, 2008

    Harry

    Jancis,
I feel so fortunate that you came on to WLTV. I am working hard to develop my wine knowledge (especially California right now), and your insights were tremendously helpful. Thank much for sharing.

And Gary, don’t be blocking out on the bucket all the time! This ain’t basketball that you need to guard your can away from your guest. Jancis wanted spit, and shouldn’t have to raise her hand to get you to pass. Give her (and all your guests) a proper spittoon of their own!

  117. October 30, 2008

    Rajiv

QOTD: ABSOLUTELY incredible idea! For me, personally, this was the best guest show on WLTV! (No offense to Gary’s previous guests)

  118. October 30, 2008

    BW

QOTD: Absolutely a great decision to come on. Many of us in the US have heard of you but really dont know much about you … and we aren’t all as crazy as Gary. It was great to learn a bit a about you & learn some more about wine

GV – Once again – guest shows are the best! Thanks for bringing Jancis on!

Maybe you can score some other legends – Laube…. Tanzer…Halliday…… Parker ?????
    That would be HUGE fun!

    It was SMASHINGLY good idea!!

Terrific show. I love Ridge wines. (Almost all of ‘em…I’m not picky.) And fun to hear you and Jancis go back and forth with your thoughts.

QOTD: of course it was a great idea…who are those that wouldn’t. they need to give our GV a chance.

Great to see Jancis has a wonderful sense of humor and could roll with the thunder show train…It was a very good idea, my favorite episode! Jancis, if you were a wine, what would you be??

It was absolutely a good idea!! Loved the show.

As GaryV predicted, a lurker coming out here simply to offer my thanks to Ms Robinson and to Gary for a wonderful episode of WLTV. What a treat. Gary, you have hit the big time in the wine world now, sir.

QOTD – a fantastic idea. Thank you, Ms Robinson, for helping to make wine more accessible to more people. I am, however, sorry that you had to visit New Jersey.

QOTD: Great idea to come to WLTV!!!

    Best guest ever.

Can only be toped by having Randy “The Macho Man” as a guest.

Wonderful, wonderful episode! Love Jancis and enjoyed very much her Wine Course on DVD (which I own). Really very good, informative conversation here. I watched while sipping a very nice, inexpensive Louis Michel & Fils 2005 Chablis. I’ve never had a Sherry, but now am compelled to try a few.

QOTD: Very happy to see you on WLTV and appreciate your participation!

  128. October 31, 2008

    Phil G

That was great. I really enjoyed watching today’s show. Glad it seemed like taping it was so much fun.

JR has been part of my wine learning since the beginning. Gary, you should know that your book is right near my computer, sitting on top of The Oxford Companion to Wine! Any time WLTV brings up some new region or grape, I pause the show, and do some research (often getting lost reading through the companion).

QOTD – Yes, it was a great idea. Hope you enjoyed it as much as we all seemed to!

  129. October 31, 2008

Great episode Gary! GREAT IDEA JANCIS!

  130. October 31, 2008

Wow. That was probably the most enjoyable time I’ve had with the show in a long, long time. I don’t often get the chance to watch many episodes, and started this one just after midnight, figuring that I’d watch a few minutes and if it looked good I’d catch the rest tomorrow. 43 minutes later I’m sitting here with a big smile and making my first comment in probably 18 months. What good fun! And shout outs to both SS Chris and Kahuna! Absolutely a winner all the way.

QOTD: This was a home run, Jancis. Best guest ever. Cheers!

  131. October 31, 2008

Excellent show. It was great to be able to hear Jancis vocalize her thoughts. The bonny bee in my bonnet will be thinking about all the great info I’ve picked up through today’s show.

    Tommy Vernieri

QOTD: That was a great idea.

Gary, it’s fabulous to see this show bring in Jancis Robinson and it’s so encouraging to see you guys click. Thanks, that was fun to watch.

Jancis Robinson and Ridge Geyserville. Truly, the classics are more classic than ever.

Best WLTV show ever! But, I agree with the person the other day who suggested that you give your guests their own spitoon. Please! But great show! And funny!

    JimChem

Grate show! Jancis, it was a wonderful idea to be on Gary’s show. It was really fun to see you. I think in your earlier wine year your were a bit like Gary; Changing the wine world, whether they liked it or not!

Gary, you are going to be hard pressed to beat this show.

    Jim

P.S. I have been trying to get our wine club to do a Sherry tasting and no one seems interested. I was at one in the mid 90’s which changed me opinion of what sherry was all about.

What a great show and fabulous idea. Thank you for having Jancis on the show Gary. And I totally got the “bonny bee in my bonnet” comment – fond memories of my English relatives’ little sayings. Thank you for being on the show Jancis! It was great seeing your personality after having read so much about you.

  141. October 31, 2008

    Awesome!

QOTD: It was a wonderful idea to have Jancis on the show.

I own the Oxford Companion to Wine…a must have, both for debutants and for afficionados.

QOTD: was it a good idea, no, it was a great idea. to have someone like jancis robinson on the show is an amazing idea, and to actually have have her, it was great. to see how her palate works and to hear what she had to say was absolutely amazing. great stuff

  145. October 31, 2008

    zorro

oh no jancis, you’ve totally ruined your reputation now, pretty soon you’ll be eating cigars and talking about strawberry shortcake. right, so i think this show has brought a lot of knowledge to the vaynernation, for me, the atlas of wine (great puchase) has really opened my mind to the world, along with a class at the jc. Now, I’m all about southern france and spain and hope to go wine tasting there. Right on Gary V, bring it. Thanks Jancis.

  146. October 31, 2008

    David Cole

QOTD: Jancis, it was a terrific idea to be on the show. Actaully I think you and Gary had some real chemistry together.

great show, and Gary, maybe I’m wrong but you really show her so much respect and seemed you could could go on all day listening to her stores and swapping a few of your own. It was great to see that kind of respect for someone, who so deserves it.

  147. October 31, 2008

    W Miree

QOTD: It was a great idea! Why? We were thrilled to hear your perspective on the specific wines and on wines in general. It was also most interesting to watch your and Gary’s reactions to each other’s opinions and observations. By the way, Jancis, I met you at the International Pinot Noir Celebration in McMinnville, Oregon, several years ago, and was fortunate enough to have sat next to you at one of the seminars. I very much enjoyed your enlightening comments.

  148. October 31, 2008

Gary, it was so good of you to clean up the place before Jancis arrived. I didn’t see Hacksaw Jim Duggan anywhere.

  149. October 31, 2008

QOTD: Of course it was a good idea its always awsome to see people with different points of views and knowledge when they come on the show.
Also ive never seen GV so willing to lission to a geust, but GV needs to work on his sharing of the spit bucket its always funny to see that

  150. October 31, 2008

    Andrew D

    Jancis and Gary, fantastic show.

QOTD: Was it a good idea??? Nothing on ‘the Net’ has made me happier in a long time. Gary, your street cred has just gone through the roof. Jancis everything you do is magnificent.

Thanks so much for a great show.

    Cheers
    Andrew

Haven’t watched an episode in weeks — good that I tuned in, as this one was a gem. Jancis was wonderful — and, amazingly, GV let her talk! Who knew that would ever happen.

Think I should update my Hugh Johnson? It’s a 1970ish edition, I believe.

  152. October 31, 2008

    Devin M.

QOTD: A very good idea. Jancis is very engaging. Listening to an Oxford educated Master of Wine makes me think Sir Gary Vaynerchuk should return for an episode some day.

  153. October 31, 2008

    bendid

What a great episode.. so great to hear from Jancis, really engaging and knowledgeable..

    QOTD: Absolutely, yes!

  154. October 31, 2008

    glenn

extraordinary show and absolutely a wonderful idea for Jancis to appear though i would have opted for an aged Monte Bello instead of Geyserville as i would have loved to hear her think thru a MB.

golf clap all around. best show since Kramer.

  155. October 31, 2008

    Make It Cool

Excellent idea! Best episode yet. My two favorite wine people on one show! It was like when Carol Burnett was on the Dick Van Dyke Show!

  156. October 31, 2008

    Dyr

Have been seeing your show for ages now. But this was the best episode so far. Great that it was not only about tasting the wine and rating but also just talking about wine in general.

  157. October 31, 2008

    Brocach

Great Show. Put the bucket in between you two. Jancis nor I care for the Jets, but she’s a lady with amazing accolades that shouldn’t stress or stretch over it. Where is her red carpet?

Still one of the best shows. THANKS SO MUCH!!!!!

  158. October 31, 2008

Long time lurker… finally, coming out.

This was a great idea. I could listen to Jancis talk about wine for days. Jancis is someone I have been following ever since I first got into wine. An absolutely brilliant show.

  159. October 31, 2008

    Matt

Long time watcher (and lurker). One of the best episodes yet.
Being British, Jancis is a true national treasure, and is just a wealth of knowledge.

Gary – thanks for continuing to provide a reason to return day after day to your shows. This was a cut above the rest in many ways.

  160. October 31, 2008

    Steve A

What an great show! To have to completely different styles come together and talk about these wines and the world of wine was brilliant. Kudos to both Gary and Jancis for making this happen. Best!

  161. October 31, 2008

    Paul C

It was a great idea that JR was on. A great show.
For me it highlighted the differences between the 2 reviewers, and IMHO Gary brings the qualities that the wine scene needs, incredibly knowledgeable while possesing the common touch.
The wine world has to move away from a Franco-centric pursuit that is used to bolster peoples twisted perceptions of sophistication. To mis-quote a famous man, Wine should be by the people, for the people. I’ll stop writing before I start sounding more like a communist.

    Great show Gary! wow!

This show has class for days while still being fun!

QOTD – Jancis, it was truly special to have you on the show. Great idea. Thank you so much! I need to buy that Oxford book now.

  166. October 31, 2008

I like the idea of the British (or European) 20 point scale. It seems to allow one to zero in better than the 100 point scale. Think about it. With the 100 scale 0 to somewhere around 75 isn’t used. It seems that everyone gravitates to a minimum of the upper 80s. The grouping of the 20 scale (if you take the time to learn it) seems more….acute

Fantastic episode, Jancis is an inspiration and a great writer. Damn it I’ll now be the guy reading batch numbers on the back of Manzanilla Sherry bottles…another trait to add to my OCWD (Obsessive Compulsive Wine Disorder)

QOTD: Yes, and you should come back! (hey, the damage was done, can’t do any more harm to do it again)

Gary, I don’t know if you made a conscious effort to tone down with guests or whether Jancis’s poise and elegance had an effect on you, but your chemistry with her was awesome. It really felt like I was watching two great wine tasters enjoying and sharing wine with each other.

  173. October 31, 2008

Great idea. You should come back and do a double blind tasting together.

    chriovorg(Lurker)

Loved it!! QOTD: You rocked it Jancis!

I have not been in to wine for that long and have been sifting through Gary’s shows for about a month now. This show represents the best of them. The best shows are the ones were serious knowledge is dropped.

It was especially cool when Jancis dropped a huge load of knowledge on Gary about Sherry and when to drink it. This is why I lurk here and gain knowledge as opposed to some of the other sites that just pontificate.

Thanks Gary for this gighantic bank of wine info. Folks like me appreciate it.

  176. October 31, 2008

    Toby (DK)

    GREAT idea :-)

Congrats’ Gary, on reaching this very defining point of WLTV’s history.

I was VERY surprised and happy to see such an icon on WLTV. Her Oxford Companion to Wine is a great tool, which use weekly – if not daily.

Thank you Mr. V, for getting a wine-legend such as Jancis Robertson a bit closer to the global wine-community.

    (P.S.
More champagne and port shows – please :-) )

Love Ms. Robinson! And loved, loved, loved(!) her reaction to Gary’s slider reference. Just thinking about sipping some Manzanilla while the turkey is roasting has my tastebuds tingling.

EPIC show, Gary! I couldn’t believe you convinced Jancis to come on the show but you did a great job interviewing her. Looking forward to seeing you taste with other wine writers in the future… and it was great to finally meet you last week.

Thank you so much, Jancis, for appearing on Gary’s show! I thought it was great.

GARY: I’ll keep harping on these two points: 1. Please get another spit bucket for the guest when you have one. 2. Let’s have a Madeira show with a nice vintage Madeira at the end.

  185. October 31, 2008

  190. October 31, 2008

    Steve

It’s always a great idea to listen to Jancis Robinson: Gary you are now major league!
But here’s an idea; if like me you guys out there sometimes think it would be great to have a short break or holiday, but at this time the credit squeeze deters you, try watching an episode of ‘Jancis Robinson’s Wine Course’. A marvellous two DVD series produced by the BBC. The combination of wonderful scenery (mostly French)and music, accompanied by Jancis’s honeyed voice is all that’s required. And, if you really want to pig out Gary, follow it with a snatch from ‘Les Vacances de Monsieur Hulot’. That’s a holiday in itself.

  191. October 31, 2008

WOW. Great episode. I usually flinch when I see a 40+ minute episode, but I had no problem watching this one!! EXCELLENT!

Like Gary, Jancis isn’t shy when it comes to self-promotion. Great endorsement for Gary that an important old-timer seeks a bit of updating by appearing on his show. Loved it.
Spain came over as another big winner here.

  198. October 31, 2008

    J Dubb

    Great show!

QOTD: Yes! Right decision, please do it again. Have Gary visit you and do a tasting from Europe the next time he is tasting over there.

    Doug Cook

Great show, perhaps the best WLTV I’ve seen! Both Jancis and Gary were fantastic. To answer Jancis’s question: great idea to be on the show. It worked wonderfully.

On a side note, a couple of quick clarifications about Sherry. First, the lot #s on the back of the bottle: usually when they’re of the form “L08044″ that means day #44 of year 2008, so sometime in February (not April as was guessed). Also, Jancis hinted at this, but wasn’t explicit: it’s only for Fino and Manzanilla (the two dry, light types of Sherry) that freshness matters. The other types (Amontillado, Oloroso, etc…) are already deliberately oxidized and will last a long time in bottle. Sadly, it’s really hard to find properly fresh Fino or Manzanilla here in the US, because (a) it takes a while to get them shipped over here, and (b) most merchants end up keeping it on the shelves for a while because it doesn’t sell quickly and because many of them don’t know how critical freshness is.

I loved to see Jancis. It is refreshing to have a European connoisseur come over and not have a stuffy attitude.

wonderful to have more information about Sherry.

    Gary,
Thanks for having Janis on your show. It’s cool to see that someone who is so knowledgable about wine can be so down to earth and more into enjoying wine then expounding on it.

To answer Jancis’ question, yes I am very glad she appeared and I thought she and Gary had excellent rapport. I enjoyed their general wine comments as much as their specific remarks on the 3 wines. Personally, members of Jancis’ website (I joined it after seeing this video) who objected to her appearance with Gary likely felt that his overall approach to wine criticism might have been wanting in refinement, elegance, and sophistication. Gary’s zeal and effusiveness is offputting, I think, only to those who feel that wine should be exclusivistic – and wine is ultimately an inclusive foodstuff. Gary wears his knowledge lightly to attract an inclusive audience, which I fully approve.
What was the California wine mentioned briefly at the 26 minute mark that they both felt was underappreciated? Jancis also mentioned Spotwoode (sp?) immediately thereafter.
Many thanks for a most entertaining and thought-provoking show. I hope she appears again.

QOTD: FABULOUSE IDEAS that you came on the show. I have enjoyed your books and just recently bought your dvd…truly a pioneer in the wine world!

GV-wonderful job at the interview and it was so nice to hear you two talk back and forth about different wines/vineyards. I hope that you can get more exciting, knowledgeable people to have on the show! The show sure has grown into a evolution – just like wine itself! This has to go down in winelibrarytv history as the best one ever!! :-)

    Ray Barnes

One afterthought…Gary’s description of the Ridge Geyserville as having Rhone-like character was singularly apropos. Being an enthusiast of those wines and having tasted an earlier vintage, I wholeheartedly agree.

Another fab show. Love the diversity of guests lately.
    Look forward to more.

QOTD: Of course it was a good idea! Having you on the show demonstrates the broad range of style, knowledge and interest that is becoming available in the world of wine. You and Gary come from completely different arenas and it was great to see the two come together.

Finally posting a comment after viewing for a while. Great show. True to form, WLTV is improving with age.

Favorite part of guest interviews is always the first three seconds. Love the guest’s reaction to Gary.

GV – is there a spitting etiquette? Shouldn’t you offer the bucket to ladies first?

Great show Gary. The astringency of Clos Veyderchuk balanced with the class of Chateau Jancis. Marvellous. More special guest please as they are great shows. Please do not get Oz Clarke on though as he annoys the hell out of me!!

  223. October 31, 2008

    Greg Z

Amazing show. That should answer Jancis’ question. She is an awesome listener. Jancis calms you down Gary. Your best job of listening Gary. You two blended your concepts beautifully. The transition in the banter was flawless. We could tell that she respects your knowledge. I will be purchasing her book this weekend. If Jancis wants us to be a customer of her service she must promise to return to your show at least once a year. Where you have Jancis bettered Gary is that it took a financial reason for her to check out the Manzanilla that she had ignored for 20 years. Gary, you are more fascinated with the knowledge and therefore the experience.

  224. October 31, 2008

great show gary! still having fun. AND IT WAS A GREAT IDEA; SHE IS CHARMING.

It was an awesome idea! I love to see the traditional wine world and the “new wave” BOTH getting out of their box and sharing thoughts and ideas. There are plenty of us who own the Oxford Companion AND watch WLTV.

And Jancis was a very entertaining guest in her own right as well.

    Great show.

I cannot believe it! This was the best episode ever. Gary, congratulations on getting Jancis Robinson on your show- what a wonderful achievement. You did a great job talking with her and the content was really interesting. I am truly inspired.

QOTD: Jancis, it was a great idea to come on Gary’s show. I have great respect for your work, and thought it was nice to see two very different people come together and talk about wine. Thank you!

  231. October 31, 2008

    Kodi

Great show, great decision to come on as a guest and show that you are willing to reach out to a different crowd. When are you going to start your own wine VLOG so that Gary can come on and shake up your purple Page members?

Gary, thanks for curbing your enthusiasm with this Jancis and taking heed to the comments after Randall’s interview. I could see you really holding back… it is greatly appreciated and shows you are not too big to listen to your audience – kudo’s to you and all the thunder your bring.

How about going to Ridge Montebello and doing a tasting and tour with Paul Draper?!?!?! I think the Vayneyacs will be amazed with it’s history and beauty…

  232. October 31, 2008

    CindyW

QOTD: It wasn’t a good idea, it was a great idea! :) I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the woman behind some of the books in my wine library, and your dry wit was a wonderful counterbalance to GaryV’s fun in-your-face style.

Fun episode, and I certainly learned quite a bit.

  233. October 31, 2008

    Lawrence Leichtman

Absolutely great episode and this was definitely the right thing for Jancis Robinson to do. Had this same bottling at the Ridge tasting room in February and really liked it. The blend is simply what is grown in that vineyard all together. Now you have me wanting to go to Spain to taste Sherries at the source. I didn’t know they would lose that much as I often keep them for 1-2 years. If you have no way of comparing there is no way to know. Thanks Jancis and GV.

  234. October 31, 2008

QOTD: It’s cool that a “legend” like JR was on the program. I think she has a very different point of view which is why I think it was a valuable episode.

GV, your NOT interrupting too much, I don’t know what people are whining about (no pun intended). Keep it up, barrage the questions, get them out there and as many as possible. That’s what an interview is all about.

  246. October 31, 2008

Abso-bloody-lutely fantastic!!! I can listen to Jancis forever (and she’s easy on the eye too!)…..(and we were born in the same City!!!).

GV – I know I have to catch up – but I needed to watch this episode. Jancis is a wonderful writer, person and guest. I’m reading her memoir now and am smitten. Thanks for getting her on you show. An inspiration to write and think about wine…

Gary, that was one heck of an episode, one that will go down in WLTV history as being one of many best.

QOTD: Absolutely, the best idea to get Jancis on the show. This IMO has the capacity to educate more people about the essence of wine. You know what will top it all; having RP in the show. This Gary will be the epitome of WLTV legacy.

Oh we liked that, it was the perfect way to introduce my parents to the joys of winelibrary TV. Jancis’s wine program was required viewing at our house back in the 80s and we were suitably impressed at her presence. In terms of the show itself, very entertaining, the grande dame and an extremely gracious host.

QOTD Of course it was a good idea, you are no wine snob Ms Robinson

    Dear Gary and Jancis,

It is so refreshing to find two wine afficionados who are not swayed but what other critics say or what the “trend of the year” is.

Balance in wine, as it is in life, is the key to happiness.

To answer your question, Jancis, I think it was a GREAT idea for you to come to Gary’s show, and I hope you will do it again.

QOTD: Great Idea, need some balance for Gary hah. Some people may not like Gary because he’s “loud”, aggressive American type that Europeans might not see eye to eye with he’s passionate and he does things his way. I can def. see why people from your forum wouldn’t see it as a good idea ^_^

What an amazing and thoroughly educational show. The back and forth between Jancis and Gary was magnetic – I could barely pause the show to answer my door for the trick-or-treaters tonight. Watching Jancis and your recent shows with Randall Graham, I couldn’t be happier with the level of expertise and knowledge. A great wine critic does not push his or her opinions, but educates the reader(or viewer in this case)so that he or she can make up his or her own mind. We love Gary’s over the top enthusiasm, but it was nice to see him in a more restrained and reflective mode. Thanks Gary for hosting these shows. I wish you could have Jancis for 3 more days.

QOTD: Great idea- especially for us viewers. And a lot of fun.

  281. October 31, 2008

What a tremendous episode. I have read Jancis’ books and truly enjoyed seeing her on the show. Your styles meshed well. It was evident the respect that Gary has you you, Jancis, as many wine drinkers do.

QOTD: Not a question that this was a superb idea and I wish you would return in the future. Gary’s fans are thirsty for wine knowledge and, of course, you have much to convey. Thank you so much for taking time to be on the show.

  282. October 31, 2008

Gary, spectacular show with a wine icon! Way to go, bro.

I got a tingle when you said your watershed Cali wine was 1991 Ridge … Montebello. I was so sure you were starting a rave about the 1991 Ridge … Lytton Springs Estate Zinfandel — the greatest modern Zinfandel.

    What a wonderful show!
If you ask me, your best show so far, Gary!

QOTD: This was the best idea ever! When I first looked at Gary’s ‘tv.winelibrary’ today and I saw that Jancs Robinson is here, I thought that does Gary even know what a bite he’s bitten. Maybe along that line Jancis’s friends would tell her not to waste her time.
But Jancis is friendly to everyone and she was here to share her knowledge with everyone. What an expert! (Gary has a lot to learn, all that talk is so superficial.)

  289. October 31, 2008

    playasanchas

OMG Gary, best show in all of the 500 that I’ve seen. I’ve been waiting for you to get some really heavy hitters and it’s been happening lately. Really well done, you did a great interview this time, showed respect, but also represented yourself well. After all these shows, I kind of get it now, you are the taster, not the geek, not the wine nerd, you simply are the super taster that evaluates wine more in depth than anybody out there without prejudice. The next RP perhaps?

More interviews! Let’s break the 1 hour barrier!

Thanks for keeping it going for all this time, it’s been a great resource.

    B. gary, when are you going to have alice feiring on????????
    C. loved the mix of wines
    D. i learned sooo much tonight. no BS, wow

QOTD- why would it be a bad idea. gary is a wacko sometimes, but hey. you were in the driver seat. you surely did not bring your collection of HE-MAN guys. brava, brava
ps how come you did not bring a bottle of 1959 musigny?

Amazing! I am “of an age” with Jancis and have read many of her books. An aside- (Gary you should study how her books were written before you attempt to write another yourself!)
She brought a class and experience to WLTV that all Gary’s exuberance and enthusiasm could not create.
Bravo to you Gary for having the guts to allow yourself to be shown up a little bit by one of the legends of wine media in order to bring her to your audience.

    Must drink more sherry.

Having never posted before, I had to come out and say that this show was my favourite episode – fantastic rapport between Gary and Jancis, interesting discussions on some normal everyday wines. Jancis has a formidable intellect, but is utterly charming and eloquent.

Mott, hook it up as a favourite episode!

QOTD: A beat-up World Atlas of Wine (Jancis Robinson & Hugh Johnson) sits on the desk next to me when I watch The Thunder Show. This show did bring the Thunder!

Gary, you are a fast learner-I could see early on that you were biting your tongue not to interrupt. Then later you two just fell into a good rhythm. Good way to finish the week. (well the Cowboys need to sneak a win at NYG! That would be the way to end the week)

Going to check out Jancis’ website. Thanks.

Great idea, Jancis. Currently dipping in and out of Jancis Robinson’s Wine Course – really well written.

I’ve been ignoring your mass e-mails for a long time if for no other reason than that I’m a dick like the proverbial Bonnet Bee. I’m hearing TMBG “birdhouse in your soul” in my head. But then I see (the)Jancis Robinson appearing on the thundershow the winelovers intellectual antithesis to the hegemony that is Robert Parker. Nice score for you and she seemed to have a good time so it was a great idea for her. It also afforded her a chance to expose herself to her cheapo non-subscriber fans like me.
You were a bit impolite not allowing your guest to spit before you, not because she is a woman but because she is your guest. I’m sure it was unintentional and due to your high level of excitement having such an impressive guest. I probably would have fallen out of my chair and babbled incoherently, “Me likey wine….mmm..good” and soforth.

Very good idea indeed, Mrs Robinson!

QOTD: Jancis, you made the right choice! I really appreciate your appearance on WLTV, as you have been the largest influence on my interest in wine. I’m sure all of the my fellow viewers of WLTV will agree with me, and we want you to know that Gary’s show is the real deal, and he is helping to educate the common Joe or Josephine who is interested in wine.

Gary…one serious suggestion…please get a second Jets bucket for your guest! It’s frustrating to watch your guests–especially one as legendary as Jancis–wait for the spitoon. However,a million thanks for having Jancis on the show! Truly the best WLTV show to date. She is the goddess of wine.

What a spectacular guest. It was very interesting – a very open discussion about 3 contrasting wines – not dogmatic at all.

This was an AMAZING episode. You do not know how many times I was smiling. Jancis was your best guest by FAR (besides your brother AJ haha).

Wow! Can’t believe it. Jancis Robinson? OMG!! Gary, you made it. Huge respect coming to wltv.

QOTD: Jancis….. you absolutely made the right choice. Your insight was awesome, thanks for making the trip over the pond. Hopefully you will come back again. I will certainly check out your website, I have always enjoyed your video series.

This was the best intellectual show! Born 1975? ghez.

Very good banter on the smells and tastes.

The sole downside is for Gary. While his audience could be demanding in the past, he has the Herculean task of meeting our now abjectly impossible, high expectations for future shows. ^_^

    Gary and Jancis!

Nice to see the best wine writer (ever) on your show! It was a pleasant surprise! Just wish there was a part 2, 3 etc.. I respect her palate tremendously!

Great episode… You are a lucky man Gary

QOTD: I think it was a good idea to come on the show because “New World” wine people need to hear a little “Old World” wine knowledge. And who better than to talk about the Old World than Jancis.

QOTD: Fantastic idea! I love it when Gary has someone so crazy knowledgeable about the whole wide wine world. I’m gleeful that Ridge was brought to the table for this episode. I agree 1000% with both of your comments about how amazing the Ridge people are. Visiting the Lytton Springs Ridge winery was the highlight of my Napa/Sonoma trip, and I think my closet full of there wine reflects how highly I thought of the people and the product at Ridge. I love that they put so much info on their labels. They are so cool!

QOTD: absolutely a good idea to do the show. When is sharing your wealth of knowledge to thousands of wine wannabes a bad idea? You were articulate, smart, and communicated brilliantly.

Gary, kudos to you for letting Jancis shine through in the interview. Since you’re the “talent” for WLTV and literally carry the show every day, it’s good to see you exercising restraint and giving Jancis all the room she needed to demonstrate her legend status in the industry.

    great show….

A heart-felt note of appreciation and gratitude for this episode. It is epic and historical. It is a valuable treat to us vayniacs, and a well deserved distinction for WLTV and our Gary. Thanks Gary; thanks Jancis. I enjoyed this episode one bit at a time. Jancis does not look old at all (the power of wine drinking and enjoyment).

QOTD: I love this QOTD; very smartly put. Yes, my dear, respected and admired Jancis, you chose well in coming, for it is not only fun (what is life without a little bit of fun?), but also this is a group of wine friends (Vayniacs) who will largely benefit from your presence, and will thank and appreciate your kindness in coming. Besides that, Gary is a young, revolutionary, fun, and very honest man, who self made, is becoming a reputable authority in wine, in this new century. I see him as a generational relief for people like you and Robert Parker. I really, really appreciate this episode featuring you. This is Carlos Mata speaking from the Republic of Panama, just so that you know that you were seen not only in the United States of America. God bless you dearly.

    Ali Amidi

In my perception this was a great idea. I think it is very important not to dichotomize the wineworld as it is seen done too often these days (e.g. new world vs. old world, oak vs. non-oak ect.). We’ve got so much too learn from each other, so teaming up with seems to me the only right way to “change the wineworld” – we need to take into accaount the past, the present and the future in order to develop the wineworld in a fruitful way- by doing so we will avoid such destructive antagonisme.
    Thanks for the great show

Amazing episode, Jancis was an incredible guest, and I was thrilled to hear her talk well about American wine.

She also looks amazing for her age as well… Hey Mott, link my e-mail up to her… lol.

loved the episode…thought it was incredibly interesting to actually watch new world vs. old world wine icons and their approach to tasting wine…i’ve only gotten into wine during the past year so i definitely lean towards the new world, but i absolutely appreciate the fact that jancis stepped somewhat out of her comfort zone by being on the show…kudos to gary for having her on and kudos to jancis for her willingness to do it…

Don’t be offended Gary, but I wouldn’t mind if you stepped out of the thunder seat and turned the show over to a panel of Jancis, Randall Graham, Charles Smith, and your father.

QOTD: Others have said it more eloquently than I could, but the answer is GREAT IDEA. What a wonderful insight into one of the most influential and classy wine writers. And why do I love wine? Because it brings people together!

Yes, Jancis is was a very good idea!! : )
That was an extremely enjoyable show and it has left me with an urge for some sherry!

Gary- I really think you should be a master of wine! You’re such a rarity in the wine world, you should really be even more involved! P.S Get more English people on!! : D

    Ray Barnes

In response to another writer’s suggestion that Gary turn over the thunder chair to a panel of other experts including JR, I would not object to Gary doing this on occasion but not permanently. Personally, while I find Gary’s style a little over the top sometimes, and I would personally never use the term “sniffy sniff” for evaluating a wine’s bouquet, I find Gary’s tasting and bouquet observations equal to or better than those of anyone else in the wine industry, in terms of their depth and accuracy. While it seemed strange at first watching him put dirt in his mouth on Ellen and Conan, his approach was vindicated by of all people Ernest Loosen, who asked a visitor to his holding in Wehlener Sonnenuhr to literally taste the slate soil. There is no substitute for first hand knowledge, even it if means getting dirty. Personally I thought his detection of watermelon bouquet in the Faiveley Pinot Noirs was a great coup, since the guest winemaker himself had missed it. I would love to see Hugh Johnson on his show, since JR was such a treat.

QOTD : Grat idea – I didn’t know much about Jancis before today (despite living in the UK), but certainly came across as eloquent and knowledgable.

Gary – good job – toned down a little from the Randall Grahm shows, which was good to see.

QOTD: Jancis, it was a brilliant idea.

As much as I enjoy Gary’s show, have read his book (attended a book signing and talk as well), and bought wine from his website, I think you provided a nice balance.

Gary: don’t take this the wrong way. I think what you are doing is great, I just found Jancis to be a great addition. She seemed to roll with the show even though her style is quite different. Well done. I am glad that you reached out to her and that she agreed to come on your show.

QOTD – It was a brilliant idea. Two people who are incredibly passionate about wine and tasting together can’t be bad. I have watched my Jancis Robinson wine tapes many times and enjoy WLTV very much. Your sytles are very different, but your love of wine and desire to educate us is similar. Thanks for making this a fantastic show.

didnt know who she was but now we’re talking! ive always been very lukewarm on your guests (except for K guy who was great) but this lady was smart and knew her stuff, very impressive. please have more experts on tasting with you. it’s very educational. when youve had random internet related people who dont know a thing about the wine and seem timid and dumb in the past it’s been painful. but any currently publishing critic or wine person (not someone selling something though) would be great.

  356. November 2, 2008

    Do Not Change This Show!!!!
Glancing over ALL the comments, it annoys me that viewers want you to change the format – which is NO format. A free-flowing art form.
I can get the straight dope from Wine Spectator, RP, Decanter, World of Fine Wine (Jancis referenced this) and even Jancis’s own site.
I come here because it is serious about wine but w/ a young, fresh look at the whole world of wine.

  359. November 2, 2008

    apj_bobswineguy

Gary-you know a ton about wine. Your occasional mispronunciations and your unpolished interview skills make it so much more real. It’s like I’m at a real trade tasting exchanging ideas w/ another wine professional who doesn’t mind letting you know that he doesn’t know EVERYTHING.

The interruptions show that you are really enthusiastic. (get that 2nd spit bucket though-w/ the Cowboys logo-they deserve to be spit on after tonight’s fiasco).

The whole thing makes me respect you more not less.

And your comments show you really do know a lot about a wide slice of the wine world. I mean India – really. Come on.

  360. November 2, 2008

Terrific show. A great idea for you to have Jancis and a smashing idea on her part to appear. thanks

  361. November 2, 2008

    Lina

As an exOddbinsee (the people from the UK will know), I was thrilled to see Jancis on the show and scribbling a little thanks comment in response to the hype the regulars and the lurkers left here.
As Ray said, wine indeed is an inclusive thing and everything I’ve read by Jancis (being 26yo) has been some of the most inspiring material available about wine.
Wine is about living and loving the living and Jancis approach has always been exactly the case. Of course, some could have been shocked with her decision to come to The Thunder Show and so was I to be honest, as many consider wine to be the unreachable incomprehesible nectar of the snobs. I can see that a few passionate commentators haven’t heard about Jancis, but she’s always been the some of the most passionate people in the wine world. Gary is the maverick in the wine world. Jancis has always been one. Thanks for bringing her over!

PS The big question would be whether she volunteered or you offered? :)

Thanks to Lina on her post and I concur with her sentiments on the excellence of Jancis’ writing. I also withdraw my earlier comments about “sniffy sniff” after having used the term (and crediting the source) over what I believe was a 2007 Rheinhessen Langenbacher (sp?) Kabinett. My friends thought the term was hilarious. If it was originally intended as a social “ice breaker”, it works.

QOTD: It was a great idea, and a great show!
I can’t wait to try some freshly bottled sherry.

  366. November 3, 2008

It was a good idea and great show – high-fives all around.

In the US, it’s not so easy to get fresh Fino and Manzanilla Sherry – many people just assume all Sherry to be oxidized and old. Fresh wine is a funny concept to many people as well.

Now that the dollar is back up, it may be a good time to take a trip to Jerez to taste Sherries first hand. It’s a fun and not crazy expensive trip even for the non-wine obsessed.

  367. November 3, 2008

Lately, I have not been able to watch the show, but I am so glad I came back to an episode like this! Now I will be going to the ZĂĽrich ExpoVina and taste, taste, taste, hopefully I will get to try an Assyrtiko, my previous experience with Greek white wine was pleasant, but not extensive enough.

    Awesome Show!!!!
QOTD This was simply a great idea to come on the WLTV show.

Thank You Jancis for spending time and sharing your knowledge with us I am now going to have to get an Oxford Wine Encyclopedia. Thank you for the information on sherry might have to try some now that I know a little more.

Sounds like a show idea on sherry new vs older.
    Thanks Again Jancis and Gary

The show was great. The personalities were like a lot of the characteristics you find in wine… highly refined and subtle notes teamed against bombastic huge face ripping characteristics. Loved it.

This should be a regular series.

oh, and one more thing, I am now a purple-pager… thanks to GV for that.

Some nice videos (including one with Gary at breakfast that same day) once you join http://www.jancisrobinson.com

    To sum up:

    1. We all loved the show. I would say top three for sure
    2. We mostly thought she needed (and any guest) their own spit-bucket
    3. We praised Gary for showing more restraint than normal, although interruptions are still there (and NOT for keeping the flow of the show, sorry, they are just interruptions)
    4. We would love to have her back.

I think in general, Vayniacs feel very honored for a guest of such class, knowledge and stature to visit the show. It must have been wonderful for GV as well. We would like to know (maybe on a show this week) what you thought of her coming to WLTV.

Next UP: Hugh Johnson, Mr. Parker himself, or one of the guys at WS, I’m sure James Suckling would do it…

Great idea to come on the show Jancis! It was one of the best episodes ever. Gary even kept his mouth shut a little more than normal when he has a guest so you know he was happy to have you on the show. Gary, please get an extra spit bucket for your guests; you have not once remembered to offer it to them when you are done spitting.

QOTD: Wine lovers need to be united. Yes, it was an excellent idea. The bridge needs to be built between everyday wine drinkers and wine geeks.

Recently I went to a lunch for Andrew Will wines, invite only for restaurant wine buyers. There were 12 people total, and 1 in particular stood out to me because of his snobbiness. He acted like he was above everyone in the room, including the rep from AW. That aside, it was reassuring to see the 11 others enjoying wine and treating each other like family.

Really enjoyed the show. GV, you did a little better at letting your guest get a few words in. Love the way she jabbed you with the comment on primitivo.

QOTD – It was an excellent idea for you to come on this show. We are all big fans of wine, just not with all of the pomp and circumstance. Wine should not be intimidating to people. A lot of the stuffed shirts speak of wine at such lofty levels that it can intimidate the less informed. Let’s face it – it is a beverage! It is a beverage that is fun to smell, taste, and drink.
Nice dig on Gary! I look forward to readin your books!

    Ms. Robinson -

My answer to your QOTD (question of the day) is an emphatic “YES, it was an excellent and much appreciated good idea to grace Gary’s show with your presence and insights!!!!!!”. Thank you so much for agreeing to appear!!!!! His approach may be rough at times, but the core of his message is truly inspired . . . Trust and expand your own palate. Tast varietals you’ve never tasted before. If you like something, great! Drink up! It doesn’t matter what the critics say.
Gary – Thank you for asking her to appear!!!!!!
Fantastic show! She deserved a two part show as well! Would have loved to hear more about her thoughts regarding the screw-top closure as it seemed like she was hinting at some sub-optimal effects early in the show.
I’ve been interested in port of late, but sherry is another wine that I need to explore more thoroughly.

Leaving a comment because I am tired of feeling guilty when Gary chides the lurkers….me.

I couldn’t believe my podcast. Jancis, wow. Great guest and a great show. Gary held himself back very well.

QOTD: Whichever members of Jancis’ purple pages were concerned about her visit should be invited to be on the show as well. Isn’t it a rule of the Universe that you are friends after drinking wine together?

I opened and drank my last bottle of Sherry in honor of Ms. Robinson’s visit. I don’t know much about it other than it was damn good. for the true geeks…Apostoles Palo Cortado muy viejo…20 bones when I bought it…..nectar. If it was dull from being in my cellar for a year I am to naive to know.

QOTD: Totally great idea. You are not a wine snob, but a classy, legendary wine expert. It is so important to teach Americans that there is such a thing.

Dare I say my favorite show.

    Thank you both for this.

Incredible show, one of the best. I think the first wine show I’ve ever seen was Jancis Robinson on Wine, and my favorite daily show to watch is Wine Library TV, so the combination was exceptional to me. Jancis, you could not have picked a better show to be on to help as many people as possible get more interested in wine. Gary’s show is a revelutionary and thanks to superb guests like you it will continue to be so. Thanks to both of you for expanding my palate, and many others!

This is the finest show yet! I have been a viewer for about four months, and a very loyal viewer. Having Jancis on was outstanding. To get views from “abroad” was fascinating. Between her show and the one with Tim Hanni, what an incredible streak! Keep up the great work. And, Jancis, you sometimes get a bad rap in the states because of your differences with Parker, but I must say that you are quite the Lady. I have always admired your work and you are quite charming. I have become a much bigger fan after watching this show. And, even though some of your fans think Gary is “nuts”, you must admire his honesty and straight talk. Both of you should take a bow!

AWESOME show!! Gary, I am so impressed and proud of you for getting the legend Jancis Robinson on your show!! For this I say to JR, YES, this was a great idea to guest on WLTV… I loved this episode and frankly I am a big fan of you (JR) and have several of your excellent books. Gary puts so much energy and dedication into WLTV and your generous appearance on his will thrill all the “Vayniacs”. Cheers

Gary you are amazing for the Bonny doon guy and Jancis, because they are true titans. You are getting some serious juice my friend. Your continued efforts are really starting to rock the wine world.

QOTD: FANTASTIC show!! I can’t believe the the great Jancis Robinson was side-by-side with the Big G. I own 2 of her books, and she is my premier print wine writer source, and Gary is my premier internet wine info source. SO this episode was set up to be amazing and it delivered. JANCIS– it was one of the best PR decisions that you’ve made in a long time. You’ll see.

QOTD: Are you f’in kidding me Jancis? I mean c’mon! It was the most rockstupendilicious episode since Randy was on. I’ve been reading the Atlas of Wine lately and am blown away by the detailed and beautiful illustrations and the passion and knowledge that went into it. The Oxford Companion is also rockin’.

I was very excited to listen to what Jancis had to say. Very good show. Gary held back and let her speak, was happy to see that too! Says a lot to be able to have such a respected, well known guest on his show. Good work Gary!

Fantastic episode, thanks for letting it go in one part.

QOTD: Yes a great idea to go on the show. I have to admit that at first I thought that the two personalities wouldn’t mix, but I was sooooo wrong. I partucularly enjoyed the way you two approached the tasting from different angles but ultimately coincided in may respects.

QOTD…It was definitely an excellent idea! I would say this was one of the best shows so far.

Gary, you received quite a bit of criticism for your show with Randall Gramm (from me included) but I have to give you all the credit you deserve on this one, it was great.

One (hopefully) final comment on this episode: I think seeing Jancis’ books is more tasteful than the frequent display of wrestling action figures. These works are well worth seeking out, they are rigourously and thoroughly researched. The photography and vineyard cartography in the Wine Atlas is impeccable. I think it would have been nice if a little air time had been devoted to them along with a few images of their contents.

Old school views meet the THUNDER.
    Gary was nervous.
I don’t think pointing out her age was such a good thing.
Gary got too technical referring to very grape in existence. (we must test our knowledge)
I don’t know if Gary wanted to share his Jets bucket.
The end got better as Gary relaxed.
The Thunder was a little distant.
Jancis probably never had a Bazooka Joe.
She is a legend buy a little dry.

    Great show!

I am a longish time viewer and long time lurker, but this time I had to leave a comment. Great show and loved Jancis’ humble attitude. She mentioned a Woodbridge/Mondavi chardonnay during the show. I am in London and saw that on the shelf at supermarket before Jancis mentioned it but didn’t buy as I figured cheap and nasty.

Tonight I saw it again on sale at somewhere near 5 pounds (probably south side). I made stir fry (packed with fresh ginger a chili) and pork ribs marinated with BBQ, Chili and Soy sauce and fresh garlic grilled so the marinade was blackened on the out side of the ribs.
Not only did the wine stand up to the food but complemented beautifully. The slight oak/butter/cream of the wine just settled the chili from the food while the acid, that wasn’t strong when drinking while cooking, came out giving it bite to stand up to the meal.

Respect to Jancis for who she is, what she has done, avoiding the predictable and for making my evening.

QOTD: Yes super worthwhile, introducing yourself to a new audience (like me) and making Gary V quite for a minute.

Great show. The proper British accent and temperment are great foils to your own style. Jancis’ books are the bible for wine students and it was a pleasure to get to listen to her – and you talk shop. Can you get Hugh Johnson on next?

  434. November 7, 2008

It was a great idea. I read your columns in the FT. After 40 years of cellaring and drinking wine, I still have a lot to learn. I am going to subscribe to your web site. Hurry back.

    Metal Dave

QOTD: Yes, a very good idea.

Gary, what a show. I wished it was 2 hours. Jancis is without a doubt my favourite wine critic (along with Andrew Jefford). I also think it is great for the American audience to be exposed to someone with a palate and opinions that differ so intensely from Wine Spectator and Parker. Also I completely agree with her take on California – which is why I rarely buy those wines.

    Great discourse on Sherry.

  436. November 8, 2008

Gary & Jancis – fantastic episode! You should pair up more often. BTW, the blog Gary referred to is http://www.catavino.net, a terrific place for information on Spanish and Portugese wines.

Very enjoyable show…although it must have been one of the longest, time flew by. Having lived in UK, I know that the British really appreciate sherry a lot, so it was a very nice surprise to have one included in the programme. I would say : try to do that more often.
I don’t know whether you were nervous, Gary, but this time the interaction with your guest was just perfect!
QOTD : according to me, it was a brillant idea to do the show…unlike going to Jerez de la Frontera, please repeat in a while!

Kudos Gary & Jancis. Much better job interviewing and listening to Jancis, Gary. She knows her stuff and is clearly operating on another wine level than most of us but Gary, you did a nice job of hanging in there with her.

Jancis, you are the best; I’ve been a fan for over 20 years. I have many of your books and they are all great; even if its a pain, please don’t stop your revisions of the Oxford and the Atlas. I always gift the old versions to someone that wouldn’t otherwise buy them and they are always loved!

Gary, thanks for doing this. Best show ever.

Well, Gary, … I reloaded this episode for about ten times in the last few weeks and there certainly is one big (very BIG, HUGE even) reason for that: here you prove, for me, you are a ‘winelover with a voice’ to be cherished. It’s you just over and over again encouraging people to explore, to learn, to ‘build’ their palate. It’s the openess for nuance, the ‘follow your guts’ thing you’re doing here and I LOVE that. You’re not only encouraging people to do so, but doing it yourself confidently … . We have to few doing this in the wineworld!
QOTD: of course it was a superb idea and it came out just as I hoped it would. Great.
Jancis has always been a bit of a ‘winemom’ to me. Somebody who made me a winelover, then a winewriter and again a winelover. Someone you follow for so long a time, someone you learn so much of and then someone you think of: ‘nah, now it’s my time doing better’. But then, over and over again, I come back, get humbled, learn again, am reminded to follow my gut feeling, am reminded to write about what I love and not what people think I should love and thus write about.
It’s the love she imparts to fellow winelovers when writing about wine that makes Jancis unique.
So, ‘thanks’, is maybe the best thing we can say here … .

  446. November 15, 2008

    Syd

Yes, Janet it was a great idea doing the show. I greatly enjoyed your insight. Thanks for being patient with Gary.

  447. November 17, 2008

Ok so I guess you can call me one of the “lukers” who just had to come out and comment on this episode. I’ve been a fan of Gary’s for a while and I would place this as one of the top 2 of all time (the number one slot obviously going to Jim Krammer :-) . What a great episode. I didn’t know about Jancis before this but have become inspired to read and learn more about her. She had such an amazing level of class, grace and style as well as a keen sense of humor and knowledge of the wine world that I just found very inspiring. You need to have her on again Gary. Great great stuff.

One more thing. I tried signing up for her site and it seems to be down. I guess it must be all the Vayneacks flooding her system. Great work Gary. Keep it up.

and can we get a resolution on the pronunciation of her name? It’s obviously not Janet but I don’t think it’s Janis either. Help??

  448. November 17, 2008

    JayZee

Wow! Wow! Wow! Now you just need to get that lawyer from Maryland on your show and you’ve really got something. :-)

Seriously, what a great show. It was so interesting to hear Jancis talk about wine and give her opinions. Wonderful show.

QOTD: Yes, Jancis, it was a great idea for you to come on the show. We know Gary can be, well, Gary, but you seemed to handle him quite well and he was clearly in awe of you anyway. Thank you for “bringing the thunder” as Gary likes to say!

  449. November 17, 2008

Wow, how amazing to have Jancis Robinson on the show! When I saw the title of the episode I was stunned! Such a good one- she is a wealth of knowledge and so incredible to hear her stories. Great guest!

QOTD: I sure think so. I think it worked quite well!

  451. November 19, 2008

    Chris G

Fascinating episode (how late is this post??)
BUT, what interested me the most was the reaction toward Jancis from her normal audience against appearing on Gary’s show.
That pretty much sums up ‘old world’ wine producing countries as opposed to ‘new world’. Wine is associated very much with the monied classes (and whatever people might say it’s still an existing problem in Britain).
I love wine and am consistenly pissed off by the snobbery surrounding a drink which ought to be accessible and enjoyed by everyone.
I’m English, live in London and work within the specialist food industry and consider Gary to be a brilliant representative for wine.
    Keep it up!
    Chris

Great show Gary, hope we could enjoy both of you again.
Never though Jancis Robinson, the “purple queen” that I read every friday on FT and also on her web site, would have the courage to appear on your show, this speaks very well of her, and it’s no doubt a very nice compliment to your work as a wine critic.
    Well done.

I know, I’m late. but to answer Jancis Robinson’s question. yes. a big flavorful, bright lovely yes! and thank you…it lifted my hopes, I am currently at 3:18PST on the 24 of Nov, less than 3 hours away from taking my WSET advanced certification, thanks both of you for helping me to believe I could pass. Jancis, you are the best.
Gary, you are in the big time now. In my book this is one of the classics.

I could not believe that Jancis Robinson was appearing on your show Gary! This is for sure the most important guest you have ever had on!! The show was amazing, one of the classics for sure. As always, Jancis was graceful and informative without ever seeming to “talk down” to anyone. Gary, you have hit the big time my friend!!!

QOTD: It was not at all a mistake to appear on the show, neophytes to the wine world need to know that legends like you exist Jancis! Your ability to convey complex ideas in an accessible fashion is unmatched! Also, your books helped me pas the International Sommelier Guild exams with flying colours, so thanks!

What a great episode- truly. My two favorite points were:
    1) Jancis’ reaction to Gary’s initial volume right at the start of the show.
    2) “My professor of video is Christopher Mott” (Gary in response to Jancis’ reference to her Sherry guru as Gary’s getting a little defensive about Jancis’ comments about Sherry needing to be kept fresh by the retailer).
    Hilarious stuff.

  460. December 15, 2008

GV- you really startled her with your opening! I could listen to you guys talk all day long.

I think Gary’s nose and palate are far superior. His flavor cues are more accessible and interesting. She doesn’t refer to specific cues but uses words like “lush” which is not as accessible to novices.

Gosh, CdP’s are beyond many of us.. QPR wise. Although, my parents toured wineries there forty some years ago and we opened a bottle after my father’s funeral that had held up extremely well. (Considering it’s storage over the years)

Great idea to come on and great to here your thoughts and views of, well, just everything!

    Thanks Both!!

I think closing in 500 replies proves it was a brilliant idea, and honestly I’d love to see her on the show as often as she wants.

This was a show that brought definite thunder to me. Mrs. Jancis Robinson is an outstanding guest and person in the wine world. She really knows her stuff. She is also quite witty, with her typical brit humour. I just love that. To me, this is much more the type of guest i like than those two college humour guys. Again, like Gary says, It all about expanding your pallatte and having fun doing it. I love also the more zany shows like 2 buck chuck episode or the outdoors in winter tasting show, but to me, and that is just me, shows like this one and one of the last ones with the winemaker for Mersault are absolute gems. I will absolutly try a Sherry very soon, wich i’ve never done.

QOTD:It was a great idea and i hope that everybody who go on your website think it is too.

    Hi Gary

It was a great idea. The british need to get out of the box and just the writing about wine. The internet has opened new areas for people to learn and love wine. The british need to get into video blogging more.Th is is the new media and yes writing will always have a good market but video is very powerful.

I’ve been saving this file for a long time until I had the forty-five minutes to devote to watchig the ep and yes, Jancis, this was a good idea. Easily, the best of the more than 700 episodes of WLTV. The back and forth between Gary and Jancis was engaging, a lot of excellent info was imparted, a love of wine was affirmed and the time flew by. Would that you could have her on annually for an update.
Every wine enthusiast should see this show. Congratulations!

That was a great show with two of the top personalities in the wine world. Really enjoyed the conversation about Sherry and the general wit and intelligence that came out of Gary and Jancis.

Jancis, you are charming and passionate.
Thank you for the shout out to the $8 – $20 category of wine.
This was a very informative and enjoyable episode. Could have been a few hours longer.

It was a great idea. As a wine neophyte (regular Gary watcher now since May of this year), I did not know who Ms. Robinson was. Now I not only know who she is, I know where I can find even more opinions and information about wine (on her web site). I’m sure Ms. Robinson just harvested a whole bunch of new wine enthusiasts from this patch that has been lovingly sown and cultivated by Mr. Vaynerchuck. Kudos on the NYT piece, by the way Gary.

It was a great idea!! although we can read a lot from Jancis, I don’t think we get the opportunity too often to see her as casual as here. Thanks to you both, great show!!
