Just got around to watching this episode. Thanks for all of the knowledge. I love learning more about wines.

I’ve been really turned off by the over oaked Chardonnays that I’ve had but I think this weekend I’ll go to my wine shop and pick up a Chablis and give that a try.

QOTD: I recently picked up a Zweigelt to try. It seems like forever ago that you had that on the show, but I really enjoyed it. Always trying new things!

GV – good show! It would be nice to see you bring back Chardonnay because it is an exceptional varietal. I particularly like contrasting the Chablis style with a very good California Chard to show people the differences.

QOTD – I have just recently celebrated my 20th wedding anniversary and I will highlight some of the wines that we drank over the course of the week of celebration:
    - 2000 Carpe Diem Pinot Noir
    - 2003 Branson Coach House Grenock Block Shiraz
    - 2005 Lewis Cellars Alec’s Blend
    - 2006 Runquist Petite Sirah
    - 2006 Ringland Shiraz
The star of the bunch was the Lewis Alec’s blend. It is a blend of 70% Syrah and 30% Cab Sauv. It brought the thunder in a very big way!

Gary — thanks for showing some love for Chablis. Along with white Bordeaux, one of my favorite underrated whites! Next time, bust out some older Chablis, I’d love to hear your thoughts about these guys when they get some age on them.

Had a lovely 2002 Columbia Merlot the other day. It was jammy, smooth, but good tannins. Also searching for a “standard” chard that can be relied on, looking good for the Coppola Gold Diamond right now, but trying a Simi soon. Don’t care much for the apples and pears chards, really want to find one with pineapple flavor profile.

We just finished a CULLEN Margaret River “Diana Madeline” 2002 for our 18th anniversary. Went great with a couple of T-Bones and a Brie appetizer.

    Hey Gary,

Tropical fruit and banana in a Grand Cru Chablis ?! Doesn’t sound like a Chablis that deserves 93 points! Or perhaps you’ve sniffing too many wines today Gary??
For the viewers out there looking for an awesome (always unoaked) Chablis experience, try Louis Michel’s Chablis’, especially his 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre! High acidity and minerality along with super-focused, citrus driven fruit!

QOTD: After a long phase dominated by Germany Rieslings, I find myself slowly gravitating back to reds from Burgundy and Piemonte!! And, there’s always room for Champagne!

QOTD: Had the Pirie Estelle over the weekend. We bought three of those after trying it. A great and different white. Tonight we’ve opened a Lungarotti Rubesco that was given to us as a gift. We’ll see what that’s like as soon as I finish cooking.

QOTD Trying out a Bernkasteler Badstube riesling spätlese 2001 from Dr. H Thanisch. Still fresh with a nice sugar/acidity balance. Hold on a bit more to those 2001 rieslings (at least the better producers).

Six to eight year old Chablis premier crus from a good vintage are usually excellent (at least based on several such Fèvre Fourchaume 1er cru tried over the last couple of years).

    I had a chance to try a 1er Cru Chablis this summer – I think I paid 14 euros. It was lemon-popsicle city. I’m a fan.

QOTD: 2000 and 2001 Chateau de La Riviere [Fronsac]. So cheap. So good.

Loving my Gruner Veltliner right now. Met up with Laurenz Moser today. He’s the guy behind the Laurenz V. Charming, Friendly and Singing Gruner Veltiners.

His grandfather invented a trellising system that many vineyards now have. He worked for Mondavi in Europe for over 8 years.

Awesome wines, just awesome, wines. The wine world is crying out for a new white hero.

I think we’re on the cusp of a new white revolution and GruVee could be it.

Hi! Never had real chablis. Will one day, sans doute! It’s good that you’re so psyched about the Jets. Favre throws a ton of interceptions, but he’s a winner.
QOTD: Bit o this and that. Currently Masciarelli Montepulciano Maria Cvetic 2004.

Very nice show on Chablis, has me very interested!!

QOTD: As we speak I am drinking some 2003 Esporao from Alentejo, had it in the decanter since yesterday, was great yesterday but even better today.

Dinye? That’s Hungarian for melon as well (Slavic seems to be Dinje).

QOTD – still trying everything, currently sipping on a Cave de Saint-Désirat 2004 Saint-Joseph, heavy on the pepper!

Happy voting, make sure the right one gets in, OK? :)

QOTD I`m crazy about CF`s from Loire Valley at the moment. Now I have in my glass Couly-Dutheil La Baronnie Madelaine 2001 from Chinon. It is a decent one and perfect for this cold and rainy autumn night in Finland.

I liked this episode quite a bit. I love the knowledge portion. Big ups to the JETS for an excellent game and a much needed win!!!

QOTD: I’m on a Pinot Grigio kick. Just had an excellent bottle from Duck Walk Vineyards out in the Hamptons, NY. You should do a road show from out there (seriously). Why not represent a little NY in the house?! We are on the same latitude as France, and the Maritime conditions make for some killer wines that I think you would appreciate very much.

QOTD: Lately it’s been a handful of random old vine zins… also stuff from Lodi, CA (especially Michael David Winery).

Love the show, Gary. I always learn something but really love watching because you always make me laugh.

Note to ev: being fairly new to this site I am not sure what its policy is with respect to posting off-topic remarks, even if they are wine-related. Like yourself I also receive the daily decanter.com news alerts (this was today’s lead article), but I would refrain from sending them here unless specifically related to the wine library episode in question.

supplemental answer to QOTD – as a belated celebratory toast to my daughter’s birthday we uncorked a 2004 Schloss Lieser Niederberg Helden Riesling Spatlese – I believe AP #5 (this estate bottled two 2004 Spatlesen from this vineyard). This wine opened up wonderfully after a few minutes in the glass – it perhaps ought to have been decanted. The proprietor Thomas Haag is the brother of Fritz Haag whose Brauneberg Juffer and Juffer-Sonnenuhr are wonderful and highly reputed. My wife and I agreed that yesterday’s wine was a worthy match for the family name.
