I’ve been waiting for this for a while!!
Possibly my favorite white wine show…
    Chablis really is ze Bomb.

The Oak Monster scares me away from most of these, and the fact that the Carlo Rossi jug was a fixture in my house throughout my childhood. Can’t wait for the secret pack!

QOTD: I heart Napa cabs… To this day it’s still the only type of Red wine I can drink a whole bottle of (well, except maybe that Dolcetto that one time :) ). I found a pretty unique one the other day; it was from Vampire Vineyards in Cally. I even video blogged about it at my website http://mattiej.com/2008/11/02/pensblueswinetalk

Great episode! Loved the energy the show had, and it’s always good to see regions that haven’t been covered in depth yet, especially to this newbie wine drinker to find out new types I haven’t tried yet.

QOTD: Currently drinking 2007 Konzelmann Riesling… everything they’ve said about 2007 Ontario wines so far has been spot on, and this one doesn’t disappoint.

Gary-great show,no matter how my tastes evolve i always wind up back in France. This weekend i had an 06 verget chablis la butte and a 03 raspil gigondas. As always what struck me about both was the sence of place that you get nowhere else.

QOTD: We have a couple of bottles of Drouhin Chablis Vaudesir 2005, and we’re just about ready to drink them. We are still going to New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs, and we go to pinots in a pinch. Looking for more Rhone Style wines. So close but yet so far.

Nice Show Gary, I like the geekout quite a bit!

QOTD: I’m drinking a little Bogle Petit Syrah right now, and EXP Syrah…can’t go wrong with a $10 bottle these days.

Last night I had a good friend over from out of town, we grilled up some steaks, and I decided it was time to crack open a bottle of 2001 Saxon Brown Zinfandel. It was freakin fantastic.

Just back from Cali 10 days of visiting and wine tasting. There are a lot more naked Chards now I think they are starting to wake up in that regard. I found many new Petite Sirahs to try and a few surprises like Van Ruiten Carignane 98 year old vines, beautiful.

For those who may scoff at Gary’s notion that Chablis is a food-friendly wine par excellence, let me offer this quote: “It hardly sounds a resounding encomium to be the default wine, the no-brainer that fits in with almost any situation, friend, dish, time of day and time of year. But Chablis is that. Chablis is also my favourite white wine, the wine I buy and drink most of for pleasure and out of interest….it is the natural partner for the fish and shellfish I love, and because it works supremely well as a drink….the stony freshness, the flinty, faintly sour acidity of good Chablis has an elemental completeness….Chablis, I sometimes think, was sent down to earth as a model for all wine-makers to imitate.” (Wine – A Life Uncorked, Hugh Johnson, p. 139)

I find Chablis has something in common with red Graves – a very distinctive bouquet and flavour profile that at first may seem less interesting than its illustrious neighbours, but grows upon you over time and becomes very special. And it remains competitively priced for the high quality.

    An excellent episode.

QOTD: Yesterday it was the 2006 Thomas Kruse (Gilroy CA) Claire’s Field Red, 60% cabernet sauvignon/40% merlot and very enjoyable. I think in a few years it will be even better. I have also tried the 2005 Domaine Weinbach Sylvaner Reserve, a lovely and inexpensive dry, crisp, green-apple streaked wine, with very lively acidity. The newest edition of the Wine Report considers the 2006 to be “exqusite”. It is a great time to be enjoying all sorts of fine wine.

QOTD: Recently my go to wine has been 2005 Capolan Merlot. It normally retails from $9.99-13.50 but for some reason Trader Joe’s is selling it here on the West Coast for $3.99. I probably would think that it was a pretty good drink (better after 3-4 hrs of air) for $10 but for $4 it is an absolute steal. I have recently also had an 2006 Ancient Peaks Zinfandel $13.99 that was KILLER. Kicking myself that I didn’t try it sooner so that I could have bought more than the 3 initial bottles. The 491 cases went real quick.

Gary, you had my mouth watering describing these wines.

I hate to have to give the Jets props since they beat my Bills, but I have to. The AFC East is going to be interesting these next several weeks.

QOTD: I tried my first Albarino last evening with Mussels. Wonderful. And this coming from a Red wine guy. Just goes to show…expand your palate!!! Now on to Chablis.

OK…… I get it now. By the size of that wallaet I now know why you love it when the Jets win. You Bet on them!!! No wonder!!!

Well, now that I figured that out….because you know how NOT interested in sports I am…. but I do liek to gamble. I meean why else would somebody go so crazy when a football team wins a game.

QOTD: I’m not drinking Belle-Vue….because you ran out and I can’t get anymore. So I am drinking ‘BARRUA’ a Wine by Agricola Punica Sardinia….thanks to Ian. Now that’s a wine you should have on the show.

Fantastic! Love Chablis, and nice work with the knowledge at the beginning. You know I like that. You didn’t talk about the 2007 Chablis, though! 2007 is suppose to be a FANTASTIC vintage in Chablis (perhaps the best in decades)… Already have a few cases on pre-order. Mr. Meadows is loving on them… (gave one point lower score to a Premier Cru I ordered at $20 than the Grand Cru you tasted today) And I love how you can get Grand Cru wines for $40-60 all day long, and I mostly prefer these to Grand Cru whites from the Cote d’Or at 4 times the price.

QOTD: Drinking 2004 Amarone! Galloni blew up the Bussolo Vigneto Alto which I have some bottles of… good stuff coming down the pipe…

QOTD: Don’t have a “go to” wine. I’ve always got something different going. There is always a white and red open on any given night at my house. Right now it’s a Godello from Galicia in Spain and red blend from Costières-de-Nîmes.

  54. November 3, 2008

Although I’ve bought a few Barolos over the past couple years, none have really hit their drinking window yet, so I’ve not tried any of them. I went to a wine tasting a couple of weeks ago and tasted my first Barolos then. I’m now hooked. I bought a case of Barolos last week and tried one over the weekend. Another expensive habit has reared its ugly head.

    Great show, Gary!

QOTD: I’m all over the place, man! I had a Chateauneuf-du-Pape (Rayas Pignan 04) at Clo NYC yesterday that totally fascinated me. I’m gearing up for a tasting club event on the wines of Spain. 2005 Bordeaux, right and left bank – I’ve been reading Parker, so I’m really excited about tasting more of these regions. Nebbiolo – I’ve got an 07 Grasso Langhe Nebb that’s going on 48 hrs and I’ve been tracking its changes as it gets better and better. Had a Gewurz that rocked my world. Tried my first Riesling Spatlese (didn’t think I’d like it, but I loved it – like a luscious saffron and fruit dessert!). Had a Burg that changed my mind about pinot – sparklingly pretty, high acid with forest floor flavors. I asked the guys at the Corkscrew to pick me out a couple random bottles that I tasted blind – I had a beautiful Chilean carmenere pegged as a Chinon cab franc! I had some Scholium Verdelho from CA that brought serious thunder as well…

What I’d like to know is: What are YOU drinking when you’re not working? Beer?

  57. November 3, 2008

QOTD: Last night I had the Mercer Merlot yu had on your show last week. Really good. We also had a Chatteauneuf-du-Pape which I really loved; nice and earthy.

Once in Chablis I asked if the wine was “oaked”. I got a glare for the owner and an admonishment that “We NEVER oak our wine!”.

QOTD: I had the 2006 Terra De Verema Triumvirat over the weekend and was totally blown away. Talk about a phenominal QPR wine! Only wish WL still had it in stock. Ester Nin is one very talented wine maker! Would love your recommendations of wines similar to her signature style.

Good show! It seems like Gary’s voice is borderline shot today (following the Jets win). I bet $8 that Gary is hungover????

  67. November 3, 2008

    Hido53

Good show Gary! Looking forward to the California Chard show. Are you going with a Montelena? Nice, balanced, “burgundian” style (no oak monster!). Maybe something from the Santa Cruz Mountains? Santa Cruz chards typically show good acid.
QOTD: Our own wine. Rhone-style field blend of red varietals with a bit of white aromatics (viognier, orange muscat) mixed in. Also a Dow Colheita 1992 Tawny Port. Needs a bit of a chill on it due to some heat on the finish.

Gary – any news on the new green wristband? I’m hoping that I haven’t missed out on it because I wasn’t able to spring for the election pack, but I have noticed that you had the Statue of Liberty on the wristband, so I’m pretty sure I’m out of luck. Oh well, you still have a devoted Vayniac in me!

Carlo Rossi Chablis! yes! makes for a good foundation of a sangria. Nothing else. smile.

2nd wine – poopy rock smell. I need to get out there and try more wines to find some of your terms. Just wonderful. Straw and hay, i’ve always thought hay was more earthy and straw was more grassy. hmm, need to hang out at the barn more.

QOTD: Walnut Crest South American Cab you highlighted – what a great deal/taste. I have been doing Horizon winery, local in NC, come to NC. I can line you up with a great winery, cooking school, etc.

    Johnnyutah

QOTD: Just had a Smith Woodhouse Tawny Port…amazing how the acid was cutting my tongue!

A quick recommendation if you are going to get nerdy. Please include the age capability of each wine (which you are usually good about) and whether you may be drinking the wine too soon. Also a discussion of the vintage in that particular region of the wines tasted, which is vitally important when talking quality, price and aging, especially for the wines of Burgundy(which you have also done in the past).

  71. November 3, 2008

    Lawrence Leichtman

Poopy rock smell!!! Like Chablis but unfortunately my taste runs to the Grand Crus that has gotten expensive as of late. My go to wines are Spanish Garnachas for the most part. Had a new one this weekend Castillo de Momesan Garnacha 2007. Really nice and not expensive.

Sadly, you’re dead-on right and I’ve not paid any attention to Chablis given its jug reputation here. Thanks to shows like this, that will change.

QOTD: Getting into WA state wines lately. Cracked the Eppalock Ridge Shiraz recently and thought it was killer.

Keep up the great, nerdy content. It’s really what drives the show.

You are so right Gary, French Chablis is a fabulous wine the steely, wet rock, acid profile pairs well with may food. I have been fortunate to holiday in France several times Chablis is such a beautiful area

QOTD: I just had the Domaine Pinson the other night and thought it rocked. Other than that alot of Spanish wine (mostly tempranillo) because it is such a good value as I’ve been cutting back on my spending.

I just had a 2002 Hoepler Pinot Noir from Austria. I was surprised by it. Definitely a Burgundy-like wine. Tons of cherries and a little sweetness to it. Other than that recent wine, just about anything. Any wine that is interesting and some from Michigan, being that I live here now.

QOTD: What am I drinking? Last night a bottle of Chinese wine ‘Suntime Niya Red 2002′ – surprising quaffable. What else – Alsace whites, Pinot, Argentinian wine and trying to try a few unusal thigns from Italy.

We started hosting a “wine and cheese” once a month at our house…one of the wines someone brought was “Silkscarf Ensemble 2006″ from the Okanagan Valley in BC. It was one I’ve had lately…had some great ones from Portugal lately too.

QOTD – In the past week or so… a decent Spatlese from Pfaltz, a totally uninspiring Vin de Pays Rose, and an interesting Alsatian Pinot Blanc.

Good One, GV! Ray Barnes’ quote of Hugh Johnson gets it down to the letter. What I might equate to the Englishman’s ’session beer’. Not too intense, heavy, or cumbersome. Goes right along, by it self, or with light cheese, fruits, smoked whitefish, spreads, salads, or elegant entrees.

Is Drouhin still doing that Vero program? That was a balanced, well made version for the entry level. But as with most pricing structure hierarchies, the cherries at the top of the tree are so much more that the easily obtained ones. I used to get an incredible value from Bichot’s Domaine Long-Depaquit. But realize that in the hot vintages like ‘03, the converse is easily proven true in Chablis, and the wines are subject to flabbiness, due to loss of acidity.

Just so folks know, Chablis is true terroir and varietal characteristic, not hiding behind oak, or Malo lactic ferm (at least, almost never), though that is allowed, and usually at the remarkable, finest cuvees and selections, and even then, subtlly, and gently, so as to avoid having twenty-five dollars of make-up on a five dollar face.

We love Chablis. We were lucky enough to spend a couple days there 4 years ago while cycling around following the tour de france. 1st Chard-based wine I could say I loved. 64 bones for the Drouhin ….. pricey, but tempting.

QOTD: Just working thru some everyday drinkers lately; Green Point Shiraz from Australia (Victoria), Ch. St. Michelle Cab over the weekend.

I have had to explain that AOC Chablis and Carlo Rossi have absolutely nothing in common to my non-wine geek friends so many times that its actually starting to annoy me when I have to repeat the explanation.

QOTD: My wine drinking has actually been way down the past few weeks, but I coincidentally opened a 2006 Bernard Defaix Chablis 1er Cru Cote De Lechet last night.

    Gary -

The show with Jancis pulled this lurker from the shadows. She was fabulous and your show rocked! This after a double with Randall was over the top. Needless to say, I very much enjoy when you have guests of this quality. You’re a player in the wine world Gary :)

A California Chardonnay you must review on your show is from Stony Hill. Theirs is like none other from Napa … very Burgundian. They are pioneers in fine wine from Napa and wonderful folks. They put their heart into their wine and not a fancy tasting room, etc. Juxtopose this style Chard against Rombauer. WOW!

QOTD: I’ve been drinking much wine from our recent trip to the Willammette Valley. I continue to be stunned at the QPR of their wines. Many $25 Pinot Noirs that blow the socks off stuff from Russian River. Interestingly enough because you’ve been talking about it lately, a little known white we fell in love with is an Arneis from Ponzi. Willammette Valley reminds me of what I imagine Sonoma Valley to have been 20 years ago for geography, filled with pleasant laid back folks, making great wines with high QPR all on the cusp of exploding onto the wine scene.

Keep changing the wine world Gary! We like it!!!

Gary: Palette food recommendation: Have you tasted gold kiwi? I just had gold kiwis from New Zealand and it was delicious and distinct enough from regular kiwi to be a worthwhile palette widener.

Cabernet Franc/Cabernet Sauvignon blend from Bordeaux, that’s the only wine I have right now. I only have 2 bottles.

I’m actually drinking the Le Gourmand Rivesaltes from the last Secret Pack, tempering the extreme sweetness with some chunks from an outstanding Organic Prairie Boule I just picked up from Whole Foods market. Not a big fan of this at all, but I do intend to finish it off.

I recently had my first Chablis in a local wine class, the 2005 Louis Michel & Fils. I have never tasted a Chardonnay that I liked, and didn’t even know that Chablis was Chardonnay. But I liked this one very much and purchased a bottle. Liked it even more, so I’m now a fan of Chablis and looking forward to trying others.

    Hi Gary,

I so much love the ending without the “whether you like it or not” bit… thank you!!!!

Furthermore, good show, would have been nice for the vayniacs to hear what all 7 Grand Cru Chablis are…other than Vaudesir (they are:Les Clos, Blanchots, Bougros,, Valmur, Preuses, and Grenouilles.)

QOTD: Just had some aweseome Malbec from O Fournier, A Crux… try it!! too young but a 4 hr. decanting job will do the trick…

Go Dolphins…. 3 more wins than last year already!!! plus, Matty ICE Ryan and the Falcons… how bout that BC QB doing his thing huh?!?!?!?

Did I hear “ripe green banana”?

    Geez, that’s like “dry riesling”…

QOTD: Tonight it was a pop and sip 2003 Ocone Aglianico del Taburno which undoubtedly suffered from lack of aeration. Hope I didn’t ruin it for wifey tomorrow.

But last weekend I got quite a pleasant surprise. We’d made an impromptu stop at a nephew’s home, and I grabbed what I thought was a $10 Malbec I’d bought earlier in the day. We were all amazed at the quality. Incredibly good tasting, soft and luscious. It wasn’t until I got home and checked the receipt and saw I’d inadvertently bought a $20 bottle: La Posta Malbec Angel Paulucci, 2005 I believe it was.

Love the sound of those wines. Going to love the sound of the champagne bottle popping when my candidate wins tomorrow (I’ll keep that to myself, because nobody really wants to start that discussion here)…

QOTD: Tonight…an over-oaked Chard. from LaFond (they make good pinots generally); yesterday: a way to tart, acidic Pinot Noir from Lane Tanner (she’s usually great with Pinots); Friday: a random red blend for Portugal…it was ok, but probably not worth the $16 bucks; on Thursday, a GREAT GREAT GREAT Aussie Shiraz, the 2001 Annie’s Lane Coppertrail…probably the first wine I’ve had where I could definitely taste “days and days” of different flavors coming across the palate. A beginning, middle, and wonderfully long finish.

My wife and I are totally pumped about the Thundercruise. It’s our 7th anniversary today, and the cruise will be our first real holiday together since we were married. April can’t come soon enough!

QOTD: I’ve been drinking more Riesling than anything lately, but I also had a pretty good Argentinian Malbec a couple weeks ago (Viña Cornejo Costas don Rodolfo), and hope to find another one or something similar this weekend.

QOTD : Thirty Nine Degrees Lake County Petite Sirah is my go to wine. You need to try it on the show Gary V you will be impressed. I also had a York Creek Tempranillo that was good and it was because you that I picked up a tempranillo. Thank you Mr.V you are doing a service for all of us.

    From Decanter:

The longstanding belief that the film Sideways sent Pinot Noir sales through the roof was confirmed today.

The effects of the film on Pinot Noir ‘were positive across all price points, with the largest impact being on the highest price point of US$20-$40 per bottle,’ a research paper published by Sonoma State University and Sonoma Research Associates says.

It goes on to show the negative effects of Merlot being confined ‘mostly to the lower priced segment, under US$10 per bottle.’

In the 2004 film – an unexpected hit – the main character famously waxed lyrical about the virtues of Pinot Noir whilst ridiculing Merlot.

Earlier data from ACNielsen had shown a dramatic initial surge in Pinot Noir purchasing just days after the film’s release – there was a 16% increase in sales compared with the same period a year earlier.

In 2005, glass manufacturer Riedel reported an increase in US sales of 45%, partly because of more demand for its $12-$95 Pinot Noir glasses.

The research, released almost four years after the film’s release, concludes that ‘the positive impact on Pinot Noir appears greater than the negative impact on Merlot.’

The ‘Sideways Effect’ was only temporary, with sales of domestically produced Merlots up, according to data from IRI, by 6% in December 2007.

    Karl

Great show Garry – still a relative newcomer to wine and didn’t realise Chablis was a region rather than varietal.
To note though, the $ has really strengthened in the last 1/2 months but I guess wine prices won’t start feeding through for a couple of months.

  115. November 4, 2008

    Greg Noorman

Your episode with Jancis was epic! That and the double with Randall got this lurker out of the shadows. Congrats on landing the big fish and keep more coming.

Chablis has to be one of the most under appreciated wines, period. Always a favorite food wine. Great show.

For the California Chardonnay show Wednesday, please consider Stony Hill. This is atypical Napa Chard from a pioneer winery of the area. A side by side with Rombauer would be an interesting comparison in styles.

QOTD: I’ve been drinking a lot of wines from our recent trip to Oregon. I continue to be stunned how good wines from the Willammette Valley are. $25 Pinot Noir blowin away stuff from Russian River. Coincidently, you’ve been talking up Arneis lately. We fell in love with one from Ponzi.

QOTD: I change it up all the time, constantly trying different things, when there’s something I really like, I purchase additional bottles. Recently had an Allan Scott(New Zealand) Sauvignon Blanc that was just as great as the Mahi Sav Blanc which is a personal favorite. Had a 2002 York Creek Cab Franc which I tried at last year’s Grand Tasting. Not sure if Ridge wines has anything to do with this wine, like a 2nd label. At 30 bones or so(had to hunt it down elsewhere cause WL didn’t carry it) a Chinon probably would have been a better value. Tasted like there was some Zin or Carignane blended in. Black Cherries and dark fruit for days–was much better on the 3rd day. Tasted pencil shavings(the oak baby) a litle inky and sun-dried tomato. I’d definitely buy it again, but only if it was at around the mid-twenties price point.

Coming from Germany we drink mainly European, of course with a fair share of German wines, and we have to accept the limits of our budget… Our wine merchant improves his connections to Spain, so the everyday wine tends to be Spanish at the moment. It would be nice to be able to try more American wines, but it is not that easy to find interesting bottles here.

Dinking a lot of Red Head Studios Yard Dog red. Picked it up because of high percentage of Petit Verdot. Never had any wine with PV before and as Gary is always loving PV I decided to give it a try. This wine is great and best of all cheap. I try to buy a balance of both cellar dwellers and things that are ready now. I also love Leeuwin Estates wines from Margaret River in Australia. Especially their Chardonnay and Art Series cabs. Great stuff. Can’t wait until the new vintage arrives from pre-sales!

Interesting show. I think it might be nice to include a map (possibly on the wall behind you, on the table, etc) every now & then to show where some of these regions are located. Especially when you’re into a nerdy mood on a given day and wanting to drop some extra knowledge. Just a thought. QOTD: I’m enjoying various wines from Spain at the moment, especially “value” grenache, tempranillo, etc as I recently returned from vacation there.

QOTD – I’ve been mixing it up a bit recently and trying to buy less and drink more of what I already have. Surprisingly, I have had a few Cabs that I enjoyed. Last night, I grilled up some dinner and enjoyed the Eppalock Ridge Shiraz that you had recommended awhile back. What I liked most about it was the fullness – not in body, but in flavor. Lots of full flavors, and enough tannin/acid to go with my cheeseburger. Thanks, GV.

Good episode, great information, have not been a great fan of Chardonnay so far but always willing to learn more.

QOTD – My go to wine New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc’s, love the acidity and vibrance. Lately, learning red wine’s, did a comparison of California Pinot Noir (Castlerock) to California Cabernet Sauvingnon (Ambroise Jay Anatole), will do another, comparing French Pinot Noir (Louis Jadot) to California Cabernet Sauvignon (Penny Lane). Study hall was never this much fun.

Note to ev: being fairly new to this site I am not sure what its policy is with respect to posting off-topic remarks, even if they are wine-related. Like yourself I also receive the daily decanter.com news alerts (this was today’s lead article), but I would refrain from sending them here unless specifically related to the wine library episode in question.

supplemental answer to QOTD – as a belated celebratory toast to my daughter’s birthday we uncorked a 2004 Schloss Lieser Niederberg Helden Riesling Spatlese – I believe AP #5 (this estate bottled two 2004 Spatlesen from this vineyard). This wine opened up wonderfully after a few minutes in the glass – it perhaps ought to have been decanted. The proprietor Thomas Haag is the brother of Fritz Haag whose Brauneberg Juffer and Juffer-Sonnenuhr are wonderful and highly reputed. My wife and I agreed that yesterday’s wine was a worthy match for the family name.

    Hey Gary,

Tropical fruit and banana in a Grand Cru Chablis ?! Doesn’t sound like a Chablis that deserves 93 points! Or perhaps you’ve sniffing too many wines today Gary??

Had a lovely 2002 Columbia Merlot the other day. It was jammy, smooth, but good tannins. Also searching for a “standard” chard that can be relied on, looking good for the Coppola Gold Diamond right now, but trying a Simi soon. Don’t care much for the apples and pears chards, really want to find one with pineapple flavor profile.

Gary — thanks for showing some love for Chablis. Along with white Bordeaux, one of my favorite underrated whites! Next time, bust out some older Chablis, I’d love to hear your thoughts about these guys when they get some age on them.

GV – good show! It would be nice to see you bring back Chardonnay because it is an exceptional varietal. I particularly like contrasting the Chablis style with a very good California Chard to show people the differences.

QOTD – I have just recently celebrated my 20th wedding anniversary and I will highlight some of the wines that we drank over the course of the week of celebration:
    - 2000 Carpe Diem Pinot Noir
    - 2003 Branson Coach House Grenock Block Shiraz
    - 2005 Lewis Cellars Alec’s Blend
    - 2006 Runquist Petite Sirah
    - 2006 Ringland Shiraz
The star of the bunch was the Lewis Alec’s blend. It is a blend of 70% Syrah and 30% Cab Sauv. It brought the thunder in a very big way!

Just got around to watching this episode. Thanks for all of the knowledge. I love learning more about wines.

I’ve been really turned off by the over oaked Chardonnays that I’ve had but I think this weekend I’ll go to my wine shop and pick up a Chablis and give that a try.

QOTD: I recently picked up a Zweigelt to try. It seems like forever ago that you had that on the show, but I really enjoyed it. Always trying new things!

Gary, I just began watching your show, and i must say that it is incredible to see someone else who is as passionate about wine as I am. i write a weekly newsletter for the wine store I run, and I feel your show is along the same lines, and totally educational and fun. Cheers to your efforts!

QOTD- I got to have a glorious dinner with Alfredo, the owner of Billington Wines (Importer) and had an AMAZING Chardonnay, the 2005 Catena Alta Chardonnay, specifically. Joseph, Mary, and the Baby Jesus…it was breathtaking! It retails around $50, and is sure to stand up to almost any CA Chard. I hope you can try it=)

Gary, great show. Have been a fan of Chablis for a long time. Thanks! Last night was historic although my candidate did not win. As Sen. McCain said, I’m proud to be an American and I will support my new president. Lately drinking a lot of Aussie Shiraz. Nice pours at a good price. I should follow my own advise and switch to nice Chablis and fish dishes.

QOTD: Right now, I’m drinking some 24/7 Riesling 2007 as I’m watching the show. It’s kinda tasty, with a lot of apricot, morphing a little bluestony with a tiny bit of acid. My go-to wine of the moment, however, is Vina Brava Tempranillo. I’ve enjoyed it ever since you did a show featuring a Tempranillo a while ago. Thank you for introducing me to that grape! And thanks for a great show, Gary!

Right now I am really into drinking the classics ( Bdx, Chablis, B.gun.d, elegant Rieslings ).
Nice show – it was fun as usual.

Fun show as always – Chablis is good and the teaching you give even better.

Great show – you are really convincing me to get out of this ‘only red wine’ habit I have. Really.

QOTD: Had Pradi Ayala Rioja (’06) last night – breaking open a Monteforche this weekend.

QOTD: Las thing I had was a Pinot Grigio – that’s OK though, it is only the second one I have had, so I’m expanding my palate.

One thing, I’ve heard you use the word atypical a couple of times recently – this means NOT typical.

Thanks for posting a show about Chablis, GV! I have never had one, but I am eager to go find one and try it out sometime.

QOTD: I am not really drinking much right now because my favorite drinking buddy (wife) is pregnant, so she isn’t having any now. So, I don’t have as much either, but hopefully soon!

I’m going to run out and grab a few Chablis to try. QOTD, I’m hooked on the 2007 Pine Ridge Chenin Blanc – Viognier. It has become my new house wine I enjoy with food and just sipping while watching Wine Library TV! A wine I would have never tried if not for your show (trying to expand). Keep up the great work.

    Fianlly, Chablis gets some credit!

When I got married my main course wine was Chablis Led Clos!

Not sure how to say it?

    A very happy show indeed!

QOTD : some nice Rioja’s over the weekend (we went up north in the Basque Country), but now being on my own at home, I’ve changed to a nice Belgian white beer. Tomorrow, my boyfriend’ll return home again, so I think we’ll open a Campo de Borja.

Nice show on my favorite chardonnays – Chablis!! Boy, that last one sounds wonderful, but it is a little pricey.

QOTD: We’ve been drinking a lot of Spanish wines lately, some Riberas and a couple of Riojas and Priorats. Also some CDP and a Cote Rotie (Gangloff 2004 – wow!!!).

    Yay for fun facts!!!

QOTD: It’s run the gamut from 2002 Château Haut Bailey to simple, but excellent Spanish grenaches because good wine comes from everywhere!

    Dude
Nice to see a fellow chablis fan, I recently did a tour of drouhin in the motherland and they were a slight bit rude, but there wines were excellent. I sampled the vaudesir as well and found it impressive but not traditional. Fevre and Dauvissat wines have an extra level to them and they treat you like a king when you visit. I am sipping on a 2000 Bougros Bouguerets from Fevre which is carmel, bitter and sappy but long and balanced, it may be in a dumb stage, but interesting.

    Tks for the passion,

    Jeff
I am buying a case of the gvain Rocq because I have 2,000 bottles of burgundy and need a change of pace. Like it…

I love ordering Chablis at a restaurant and then seeing the looks from all the people who think they know wine but dont who think I’m an idiot for ordering cheap jug wine. QOTD: Really good stuff: Clerico Barbera D’alba (maybe you recommended it)- huge QPR over other peidmont reds

Have never thought too much about chablis. Dont know that Id think about jugged wine if someone asked me about it, but its not something ive tasted a lot of. Time to rethink and retool the ol’ noggin! QOTD: The chianti I mentioned several episodes back.
