    At last a new show!

Hi Gary, keep going with the “Libray Expation” project, that will add depth and sofistication to your show.

You know what have I search and NOT found anything on your site?

BRAZIl – Yes, I’m braziling, so I’d like to see you do a show about us.

I can suggest some wines for you, if you want, but I don’t know which ones are available, if any, in the US. Anyway, it would be very nice.

there should be an optimist scale for impenatrable wines like four rose coloured glasses out of five.
    qotd: corbieres, albarinho

Are there any of those big 100% Tannats available from past vintages anywhere?

QOTD — Well, since I doubt you’ll do a Madeira show, how about an East Coast Chambourcin show!

I disagree Gary…I think the J-E-T-S are gonna put the first “L” on the Titans. Not gonna be easy but the momentum is there.

    Let’s keep the beard growing.

QOTD: the Tyrian varietal (hybrid of Cabernet qand Sumoll)

I still, still, still, have not tried Tannat.

QOTD – New Mexico wines! No results found. I’ve had some decent wines from NM would be intresting. Specificially Southern NM, Mimbres Valley (St. Clair Vineyards, Blue Teal Vineyards etc)

A good effort here…and it was a good idea to explain that you just came back from a speaking engagement, I was wondering why there was no episode yesterday.

QOTD – OK, how about a Trockenbeerenauslese show?

G.V. I can’t find a show that has Carignane in it . When we were in Lodi last month we had some from Van Ruiten Vineyards made from grape vines that were 98 years old. I was blown away by the fruity berry tastes. Please tell us about this grape.

Just wanted to say that you are appreciated too, my Man!!

Back later for the ? of the day.

QOTD….GV, I would love to see a show on Mosel wines. A search of “Mosel” gets nada, zilch, zero results. There’s so much to talk about, you could probably make it a three or four part series. Day One could focus on a few of the better known towns and/or producers. Day Two could cover some of the more interesting wines from the area, ie the dessert wines. Day Three could be a blind tasting. Day four could be a taste-off “grudge match” between the Rhine and the Mosel. For what it’s worth, I lived on the Mosel for a few years while in the military and have a soft place in my heart for the area. While there, I helped with the grape harvest a few times (pick one, eat one, have a shot of schnapps).

First of all: Cabernet or Merlot from Penedes in Spain – comparison against cabs and merlot from france. They say they (Penedes cabs) lack personality but I would love to see the higher-end Penedes cabs against the same price French cabs.
Secondly: Verdejo from Rueda in Spain – Germanios of Bodegas Balbas – delicious: crist and long, a new hit in whites for me.
Thirdly: Amadis 2004 from Rotllan Torra – Priorat. Second wine of this top producer which knows how to bring.. a good wine.

Laid Back Friday…good to see it back. I was just loolking for a Tannat at my local wine store, and sad to say they didn’t carry one.

I have a feeling your not going to be shaving any time soon, if you know what I mean. Jets 24 – Titans 21. OT field goal wins it again for our NY Jets for the second week in a row!

QOTD: I searched for wines from Poland and didn’t see any. How about a show on that obscure topic?

  15. November 21, 2008

    Marc-China Wine Tours

GV, maybe running the Tannat through a Vinturi would help.

QOTD: The wines of Grace Vineyard in China. :)

  16. November 21, 2008

    Wojtek

Richard Ritter, I am Polish and there are no decent wines from Poalnd, believe me. Maybe in a couple of years:(

    WLTV RENAISSANCE, SON!!

qotd – Barrel 27 – awesome central coast producer – i know you’ve done Herman Story and McPrice Myers, this is their co-venture (as I’m sure you know) – their Syrah, Grenache, whites – all solid QPR in my book – whaddya think?!?!

  18. November 21, 2008

    Chris Tessari

    Thanks for another great show.

QOTD: Mulled wine. I’m from Michigan and now live in San Jose, CA studying internet law. Before I went to law school I was I wine buyer/wine salesman in Michigan. Right around Christmas time a lot of people wanted to make mulled wine. It’s a northern European Christmas tradition which carried over to the midwest (there’s a lot of German/Scandinavian descendants living in the midwest). Could you go a little retro and do a mulled wine episode?

  19. November 21, 2008

    Scott Gray

I don’t see a review of Abrazo Reserva here. I think the Grenache/Tempranillo mix from Spain is great for newbies to the wine world as it’s very easy to pick out the distinct, rich flavors when drinking. Still one of my favorites!

  20. November 21, 2008

    gubby

QOTD: No shows have been done on Flanders Red Ales or Belgian Dark Ales.

  21. November 21, 2008

    benny z

hey, i’ve got something that looks just like that decanter
so i’m gonna put in a vote for corbieres too and also throw minervois into the mix
    southern france baby.

    Daniel Kemp

I dont know if there is such a thing as non-alcoholic wine, but if there is then that would be a cool show to watch.

  23. November 21, 2008

    Tom G

QOTD: Environmentally-minded farmers and vineyards. There are quite a few major vineyards that practice sustainable farming and produce fantastic wines. Shafer, Spottswoode, and Honig are three that pop to mind. It’s not varietal-based (although with these producers a cabernet sauvignon theme could be great) but it shines light on a fantastic trend.

the beard is coming along nicely ., it feels like its been a little while since a laid back friday. cool wine, and for ten bucks?!! thats a good deal. this episode rocked. maybe you can do more nebbiolo in 09. id like to see more of that. and more laid back fridays :D keep em comin’ thanks gary VV

Hey GV! I just wanted to tell you that your show inspired me to take a wine making class here at UC Davis and I’m surprised by how much your show taught me about the wine world. Keep up the good work.

As far as types of wines for the THUNDER SHOW… as a college student I’m always looking for some good under $12 wines. I really liked the cheap wine shows you did and I always look for the better cheap wines when I’m at the store.

  26. November 21, 2008

    FreddyF

    QOTD: Condrieu

  27. November 21, 2008

    Dr. Dan

Gary, how about a show featuring wines from the Montsant DO region of Spain, surrounding Priorat? I only found two Montsants on the WL web site.

  28. November 21, 2008

    Doug

Great show; makes me wonder when I’ll drink a few of the wines I have squirreled away for the distant future. QOTD: You should do a show on bizarro wines, the ones that make “serious” wine people uncomfortable. One example: the mysterious and frequently banned Uhudler wine of southeast Austria.

  29. November 21, 2008

    Glenn P

    Great show- happy Friday!

QOTD: I would love to see a show on Mourvedre

  30. November 21, 2008

    BobZ

Love laid-back Friday, keep them coming. Blind Monday sounds like a good tradition, too.

I’ve never been a Jets fan (let’s face it, it hasn’t been easy), but thanks to Favre’s story and your enthusiasm, I’m beginning to follow. The performance of my local team (Eagles) hasn’t hurt, either.

QOTD: How about a show on Chambourcin? I live in Delaware, and a lot of it is grown around here. I’d be interested in your take on it.

  31. November 21, 2008

    A dumb Rhine king

Keep the mojo flowin my friend.

    QOTD:

Maybe take a look at different wines from around the US that are unique to the US.

A cold climate episode would be interesting. You could taste wines such as Minnesota’s U of MN grapes Marquette and La Crescent, or Elmer Swenson of Wisconsin’s grapes Prairie Star and Sabrevois.

  32. November 21, 2008

    Toni

Looks I answered the question of TODAY yesterday.
You can call me Toni “the precog”

So, see the wines from countries like:
Ukraine, Belarus, Russia, Romania, Slovakia, Albania, Moldova, Georgia, Croatia, Serbia, Macedonia… and last but not least (mailed you that one) Slovenia (hard to stress that one enough :) )

As per winemakers, you might want to host Aleš Kristan?i? of Movia estate. The guy is borderline mad (or so it seems). Makes a couple of very interesting wines incliding (but not limited to)
    1. undisgorged “méthode rurale meets méthode champenoise” sparkling wine called Movia Puro
    2. Movia Lunar, a wine, not only “unfiltered”, but completely unpressed and unprocessed. He actualy stuffs the modified barrels and burries them underground. The entire process is left unatended for months… the greaps pop, ferment, macerate and finaly the wine clears itself…

    Doh… too long…

  33. November 21, 2008

    manonthemoon

Nice shout out on your two new knickenbockers.

QOTD: I second the Chambourcin show from Va or perhaps a white wine Pedro Ximenez from Spain. Of course I am always up for a pinot tasting with Brick house, who also produces my favorite Gamay, and Sineann included since neither have been represented.

  34. November 21, 2008

    HuskerJamie

Great show Gary V and good luck to the Jets. I’ll get to work on the homework after my Vikes find a way to lose to the Jags.

  35. November 21, 2008

    Johnnyutah

QOTD: I’ve got 3 letters for ya…D R C…do it, do it, do it. Not exactly apropos for this economic climate, but you can let little guys like me who cant afford hundreds on a bottle taste vicariously through ballers such as yourself.

  36. November 21, 2008

    mumbels24

    QOTD: Italian Lambrusco

  37. November 21, 2008

    Christo

Gary fun show! Every time I watch I learn something new! I caught every episode this week! And I am a new member to your site! I am hooked! Good luck to the Jets Hope they pull it off for the sake of a good wine review on Monday!

    QOTD:

1- A show on good wine coolers and how to store and preserve your wine especially with all the wines you recommend we store for many years.

2- A show on Greek Wines, during the show it would be cool if you covered two things a) what regions to visit if visiting Greece to try good wines b) I saw you had greek wines on winelibrary but can you do an episode on them.

3- Doesnt have to be a complete show but somehting where you try Vine Cliff Cabernet in Napa, I am a little biased and hold them up high because they were my 1st introduction to wines in Napa and I like that they are not into making a vast amount of wine and Cater to making only the best if they can only make 300 exceptional cases instead of 500 they will do it to keep there wine in that higher level!

    4) A show on Great places to visit to taste wines. I saw you are doing a Wine Cruise great idea how about a Trip to France Touring and tasting different vintages? Just a thought.

    Thanks!

  38. November 21, 2008

    Alicia

Great show. Good to know that you’re getting back into the groove. :)

QOTD: I don’t think you have enough Ohio wine…Ohio has some amazing wines. Actually, I think that you should do a winery grape juice show for the kids. I had some incredible grape juice from a few wineries. I don’t remember names, though. :(

Do Arbois, they are some very very old school and interesting wines from Jura in France..
or do Hunter Valley Semillion .. you know the old school ones that need to age.

    Two words: Vinho Verde!

  43. November 21, 2008

    Loy V

Tannat sounds interesting with a great price for tasting – not your everyday wine, like Sagrantino?

QOTD – Tried a search for one of my favorite wines Linne Calodo, from the distinctive limestone soils of the west side of Paso Robles. Unfined and unfiltered wines through the blending of Rhone and Zinfandel varietals. This would offer a unique blend of wines from a different area of the coast for a future show. Might even compare a varietal to a blend. ciao

  44. November 21, 2008

    Paul Stonier

    WOOO! Laid back Friday!

QOTD: Would LOVE to see a Finger Lakes wines show…or at least hear your thoughts on them. I don’t really know if the quality of them really can contend with many of the other wines on the show, but it’d be cool to hear your thoughts. The local liquor store has a wall dedicated to them. There’s a ton that aren’t serious, but you can find some decent ones in the mix.

  45. November 21, 2008

Nice little show on Tannat. Will get back to you on the real QOTD.

Hello Gary! I have been ‘lurking’ quite some time now. 3/4 months I believe. I felt compelled by your request to enter some new areas on the show with us, to widen the WLtv grounds. Immediately Kongsgaard sprang to my mind. There has been quite some fuzz going round for some time and I’m considering buying a bottle of ‘the Judge’ 2005/ maybe you could shine your light on this chateau.

Also Greece would be a nice area to explore.

    Thanks Gary,

    Vincent Smid, Rotterdam, Holland

Knowing how you like to be informative these days, how about a show on the esteemed Chateau Cheval Blanc? The ‘47 seems to be a classic in everyone’s book, but they also say that it’s “technically flawed.”

Or how about a show on wines that are “technically flawed” but that’s what makes them shine? Unbalanced, but great none-the-less; or unique stylistically.

  53. November 21, 2008

    Anthony L.

Great show. Love the classic one wine, education shows, this is truly your strong point.

    QOTD:

    Some ideas:
    -Meursault
-Wines of Southern France (Minervois, Pic St.Loup,Languedoc-Roussillon etc.)
-Sauvignon Blanc from around the world (Chile, NZ, Sancerre, Cali, etc.)
    -California (Central Coast) Syrah
-Jumilla and the lesser known D.O.’s of Spain
-Dessert Wine Show (in honor of holidays)(please include Olivares Dulce Monastrell 2004, which I know you guys carry)
-White Rhone Wines (Condrieu, and other w/ Viognier, Marsanne, Rousanne)

  55. November 21, 2008

    Anthony L.

Okay, I just did my search and I have two suggestion. One would be an episode on Carmignano wines. This is a favorite old world Italian of mine. My second suggestion would be a show of Nebbiolo based wines that were made in California. I’ve had a few of these and I thought they were very good.

QOTH: Didn’t find anything in search for Fair Trade Organic Wines. It will be fun to see how you bring light and thunder to this.

Thanks for giving me the perfect Christmas gift for my very VERY Sicilian father-in-law who will only drink Chianti and thinks any wine priced >$4 is over-priced! We’re working on him… we’re working on him! lol

QOTD: I’m hearing alot about wines from the Mendoza region of Argentina. But I don’t think you’ve talked about Dona Paula or Proemio vineyards.

Or go in a completely different direction.. Japanese! No, not sake…. plum wines!

Thanks for sharing your passion and enthusiasm!

I searched for a wine called “Lyaer Cake” on wine Library with no results.

I had the wine in a little restaurant in Princeton, NJ and it blew my mind.

Maybe something you can look into :-) . Great show. Keep rocking Gary V.

QOTD: TWO shows would be amazing, I think: (both did not return results.

    1. Unfiltered, earth-driven, no-sulfites, TRULY old-world French wines from JURA. Get the Funk-o-meter out!!! Poop’s in da house!
    2. Whites and reds from GASCOGNE. Lots of bad rep about Gascogne, but a lot of bottles i tried recently were AMAZING AND INCREDIBLY INEXPENSIVE!

  62. November 21, 2008

    Michael Schoonmaker

    QOTD: Mendoza, Argentina

I know you’ve had a Malbec on the show before, but that was a long time ago. I was in Argentina in May, and really loved the wine down there. The Mendoza wines were just spectacular, and I have at least a bottle of Malbec from the Mendoza region every week. It’s stellar. I’m not much of a white wine drinker, but the Torrentes down there is good, too.

Also, what about some history? I’ve been reading History in a Glass lately, and seeing my “great-uncle”’s (long story) name crop up more and more (Frank Schoonmaker). Time for a history lesson?

BEST SHOW IDEA FOR THIS TIME OF YEAR

Wine gadgets for gifts show. I love the show on the instant aging thing that you dipped in the wine. There is a lot of crazy stuff out there and I would love to see what you think of some of it.

I want to see you review the Vinturi: Essential Wine Aerator. At 40 bones it seem like a lot of $$$ for something you just pour your wine through before you drink it but there are a lot of good reviews out there. Would love to see you try it.

Thanks a lot love the show.

  66. November 21, 2008

    Jake

    MONKEYS!!!
DO A SHOW WITH MONKEYS! No, I’m really serious, Gary. If you had a monkey or two next to you on…Thursdays(?)…it would really be heinous. You know, let the monkey take a little sniffy-sniff, see how they react, let them roam around and harass Mott…try to give your opinion of a wine as the monkey hits you on the head. Yes….monkeys.
    I was a lurker until I posted this…now I’m ashamed.

  67. November 21, 2008

We love that you’re feeling your mojo working again. (Never lost it as far as we’re concerned.) And we really love that you’re refocusing on the educational aspects. That’s why we watch!

QOTD: Hungarian Tokajis. Drop some science, taste some different puttonyos, tell us about a good value…

    Zach & Ashley

    J Crazy

Yo, how about a show on one of my favorite drinks: mead?
or ‘Merican bourbon? Gotta get it out that Blanton’s is the best out there (and I get it for half the US price here in Japan).
I already emailed about having a sake expert on the show and have emailed Beau about that.

But, give mead a chance. And really, your just a couple states away from where the birthplace of bourbon. How about taking a road trip to Blanton’s to show all the awesome awesome Vayniacs how a quality drop is made? I know you’re busy, but everyone love a roadshow episode. Shoot, have a whole week on bourbon, mead and/or other non-wine alcohols.

OR (just thought of this), how about a WATER tasting!!! There are actually water sommeliers out there. How about a premium water tasting. That’d be crazy mad off the wall style.

  69. November 21, 2008

I love you guys! (and gals)

QOTD: Found no “Anjou” show, or “Cabernet Franc from Italy”, or “Corbieres”, or “Fronton”, or “Aligoté”…

I’ve done my homework…how ‘BOUT you?

    Prost!

  70. November 21, 2008

i think that a show contrasting the differences in Primitivo, Zinfandel and what they have in Croatia would be neet. After all zin came from Croatia, only 50% related to Primitivo. Maybe a blind tasting of all three.”Crljenak” the name Croatia uses for Zinfandel.

Also, i said a few days ago, jets player on theee show, oh ya.

How about wines from the Great Lakes State? I have had an opportunity to try a few here and there, but really haven’t had much opportunity to see if any of them are a real serious effort and my tendency is just to shy away from them and go to more well known wine regions. I guess a more viable show idea would be to do a show with wines from little known or recognized wine producing states. It might be a bit of a risk, but you never know what might come up. There has been a little bit of a Renaissance in the western and northern lower peninsula of Michigan where the water off of Lake Michigan regulates temperatures and the terroir is quite good for producing a slew of different varietals. I think that the Riesling and Gewurztraminer draw the most attention though, since the climate and land is somewhat similar to that of Germany. The west coast gets all the attention, but I think there are others out there in this big country that produce noteworthy wines.

Sparkling Ciders (Ones that are readily available)
    All Prosecco Show

    Can never get enough Champagne

Oregon Zin or Washington State Zin
    More viognier

I went to a vineyard in Oregon two summers ago and their wines were so memorable that I just have to mention them… they can only be purchased at the vineyard or through their website. In the spirit of this episode, this producer definitely doesn’t show up in a site search on wine library. http://www.pfeiffervineyards.com/ Pfeiffer is a pretty special little place and the wines are quite good. They are very committed to keeping their operation small and personal. Their 2005 “Blue Dot” Pinot Noir is very good.

How about a show where Big Sasha picks the wines and tastes along with you?
    A cigar episode?
    Rum?
Absinthe (now that it’s legal again)?
    Sake?
Maybe a new version of Episode 148, with a guest that doesn’t have a highly trained palate? Maybe #148 redux with either Mott or AJ?

And I’m spent… Glad to hear you caught a second wind. It shows.

    Hey Gary,

I’ve been a recent fan of your show all the way from Singapore. Great stuff and definitely has added much value to my palate expansion quest.

    QOTD:
    - A Muscat show, showcasing the different varieties of the muscat grape like Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains, Muscat of Alexandria and Orange Muscat etc…

    - A China Wine show. Because I recently picked up a bottle of Cab in the supermarket from a vineyard in China. Didn’t taste that great though.

QOTD: I’m from Galicia in Spain, I’d like you to try the wine from Terras Gauda.

    Great Show!!!

I’ve been desperately waiting on more shows on Tannat and the Madiran. It’s unfortunate that Madiran wines (especially 100% tannat) are tough to come across in the United States.

QOTD: I’d really like to see a show comparing premium Napa cabs from the different districts (Stag’s Leap, Howell Mountain, Rutherford, etc) to see the different characteristics present.

QOTD: AOC Jurançon. How about this from the same region than Madiran? Petit Manseng grape makes awesome dessert wines (& I’m not saying this because I’ve built my palate over these…). But for value-driven wine-lovers, it easily makes it up for a Sauternes or a Monbazillac.

  85. November 22, 2008

Thanks for this show GV: My parents used to serve Madiran for family occasions but I haven’t had a chance to drink one in 30 years. This is hard to find here in the US.

Had to reach for the World Atlas (Jancis Robinson’s). Love it.
I study wine all the time but forget these little places because I work w/ new world Cabs & Pinots mostly.

    Liked Eliot’s Big Sasha idea.
Try The Peppermint Paddock for a sparkling Chambourcin (altho I was fascinated to see more than one person want a show on this grape)
winewoman’s ideas esp cheese pairings, women in wine.
Served my buddy some Blanton’s single barrel bourbon last nite (but stick to wine on WLTV please)

Great Show!!! I am glad to hear that you caught a second wind, just like my Miami Dolphins. Looking foward to seeing you on FOX & Friends tomorrow morning.

QOTD: I searched for Mexico and Baja California w/o results. It would be an interesting episode, since Mexico probably has the oldest vinyards in this hemisphere.

QOTD: I’d like to see a show on oxidized wines. I know you have an Arbois vin jaume (yellow wine) in a clavelin (650cl) at the store (saw it last week!). I’m intrigued by them, but they’re always really expensive, so I haven’t sprung for one yet.

btw, you turned me on to tannat/madirans about a year ago, right when I started watching. It was a wine I immediately loved (I can be a tannin junkie at times) but I forgot about it after I tasted the 2 tannats carried by the local store. Thanks for reminding me to seek these out again!

Awesome show. Never thought you lost your first wind, but hey, whatever works!

QOTD: You have said repeatedly that the new New Zealand grape is Pinot Noir. Why not do an ALL New Zealand pinot show? (i.e., Central Ottago).

Also, you stopped doing “The Other 46 Episodes” I would love to see more of them!

    Keep rockin!

    QOTD: I have two answers!

    1. You talk a lot about the big California regions(napa, Russian river, sonoma, etc.) Can you spend some time highlighting some of the smaller regions in California? More specifically SANTA MARIA VALLEY OR SANTA YNEZ / LOS OLIVOS.

2.If that is too much to ask for can you do a show with Costa De Oro wines. Heck I even sent you a mixed case of some different wines they make and it didnt get on the show.

Finally, can Gary Burk the wine maker at Costa De Oro be a guest on the show? He is an AMAZING guy and has a great story in wine.

    Thanks V MAN!

I just want you to know I dont even have cable television becuase of you! I figure why pay for TV when I can watch better shows online! (WLTV, Diggnation, ask a ninja, Hulu, the list goes on!)

    Great show Gary….

I really want you to get back to the other 46 shows…I know I have promised you some New Mexico wines, but I really need an email or a quick call, to talk about what I can make available to you. My friend Chris at Tularosa Vineyards in New Mexico said he’d send a cellared wine if I wanted, but I didn’t know if you only wanted wine that’s available to the public for purchase. I could also send some sparkling, or sweet stuff, or well damn near anything. I just need to know what you are looking for. I’m a huge fan of New Mexico wine, and I think everybody should see what we have to offer.

These are amazing grapes/varietals that I discovered via Bonny Doon’s wine club – so lucky!:

    Ruche / Monferrato
    Charbono
    Cortese
    Loureira / Treixadura
    Malvasia
    Pigato – wines from Liguria

which brought me to experiment and find/love
    Carminere
    Beaujolais Nouveaux (!)
    Grüner Veltliner

and not a one found by searching on WLTV – so, go!
how’s that for bucking the chard/cab/pinot tradition! ^-^ have fun!

    Chateau Plonk

How about some austrian blaufränkisch and pinot noir. Ooh, or even better yet, the “other” nebbiolo wines of piedmont like Ghemme and Gattinara. God I love me some nebbiolo. Or maybe some white burgs from the underrated savigny appelation. Speaking of underrated, how about some verdicchio! So much better than most pinot grigio! Or some of the Walla Walla beaters from Red Mountain in Washington. Vihno Verde! White Bordeaux! Hunter Valley Semillion! New Zealand Syrah!
Sorry, got a little worked up there… Viva Le Vin!

I searched “Pomegranate” and came up with nothing. Have you ever tried pomegranate wine, particularly from Israel? I just had my first tasting of a dessert wine from Rimon of Israel. They also produce a “dry” wine and a “port style” pomegranate wine.

Wines I can’t find at WL: Coulliours and Fitou. I’ve been in France for the last six weeks. This trip, we’re focused on trying wines from SW France, yes, including Madiran, but mostly Rousillon region. I’ll have to try finding some of our favorites after getting back to Obamaland.

QOTD: I looked and saw only one episode, episode #90, on ice wine. Ice wine is something that intrigues me, and I can always find at local stores, but is usually a little pricey. Is it worth it? And, if my search was correct, it has been OVER 2 YEARS since you last tasted one on your show.

Thanks for all of your hard work Gary, Mott, and everyone else behind the scenes…especially your wife Lizzy. I know how difficult is is on my wife when I am seemingly always dealing with work. God Bless.

    Hi all,

First of all a great weekend tot all off you vayniacs around the world.
Nice show, bought a bottle of madiran yesterday (00). Thanks for the decanting tip.
QOTD: A very interesting white wine i heard comes from Savennieres a small appelation in the Loire region.
Hope to see it come by.

    Mr.Ambassador

    Hi Gary,

After a quick search I couldn’t spot any wineries represented from Washington State’s Puget Sound AVA; it would also be interesting to see a wine or two from the proposed Chelan Valley AVA (Tildio and Vin Du Lac come to mind)!

Another subject which might be of interest is a special guest or “on-site interview” with a cooper manufacturing wine barrels and some discussion of various materials and what they can bring to an aged wine. A guest like Nathan Roberts from Arnot Roberts would be a real coup if that could be accomplished!

Thanks to all of your past palate-expanding selections and looking forward to many years more!

QOTD: One of my favourite Portuguese varietals is the Baga grape. They are strong and fruity, great for the winter and festive meals. They are also excellent value, since the wines of Portugal are still largely avoided by the mainstream press. A search of WLTV revealed no hits – This could be a secret hit for that turkey dinner!

    Hi Gary

I was really happy to see another Tannat show. I have some 2005 Cambiata Tannat and have been wondering how long to wait…I guess it’ll need quite a while?

There are a couple of unique grapes that have found a home out here in the Puget Sound AVA… Madeleine Angevine and Siegerrebe. There are numerous producers and some are quite good.

I’ve been on a kick lately to search out and try unusual wines (your influence?). Just bought some Norton, Pineau d’ Aunis and Mencia, but haven’t had a chance to try them yet.

I’m also very anxious to try some Nerello, Grillo, Counoise and Bobal. I’d love to see a show on any of these! The more obscure something is, the more I want to try it.

Thanks for continuing to put out such great shows

    Gary,

I love your show. I’ve been one of your fans, quietly watching, for about a year now. I really appreciate the expertise that you bring to wine appreciation as well as your unpretencious and accessible demeanor. I always know that I’m going to get solid information combined with the quirky floorshow that is Gary Vaynerchuk! I had my first taste of good wine in my twenties. Previous to that I was solely a beer drinker. It was a bottle of Portuguese red at a tapas style restaurant in Philly. The wine really enhanced the food that night. From that moment on I was a dedicated wine drinker. I really enjoy your enthusiasm for wine. Thanks

    Michael

Damn, too many options to name. Your search doesn’t come up with much, you need to get Mott categorizing more. But I did catch some cool back episodes with the random hits. You always make my day, man. There’s nothing better than finishing the last hours off with a glass of wine and a little bit of GV.

Can it be that you haven’t done an honest Port episode? How about covering the 77s in depth? Or let’s get a review of the 2000s. Or how about digging deep and covering multi-decades? Or maybe just an overview, tawny v. vintage, lbv v. ruby, etc…. Port is amazing, and it would give you a nice venue for some cheese and cigars!

Other areas/wines that haven’t seen much airtime:

Greek wines (though you definitely promote them)
Tasmanian sparklers (some damn good bubbles)
Uraguay (did you just say “tannat”?)
    Torrontes (my new favorite girl)
Zinfandel (you could do a month on Zin, where has it been?)
Tokaji (how many puttonyos does it take to screw in a lightbulb?)
Sauternes satellites (help us save $$$, how about doing it blind!)
Anything in the Loire: savennieres, pouilly-fume, Coteaux du Layon (botrytis, oh my this is good!), sparkling chenin
Cannonau (Grenache) and Sardegnian wine – so good!
Vin Santo – try with a hazelnut truffle, wow

And a few oldies but goodies that still need more screaming:
    Alsace
    German Rieslings
    Portuguese still wines

And a few guest suggestions: Helen Turley, Robert Parker, Alice Waters, Joe Biden, Lewis Black, the Car Talk guys, Angelina Jolie, …

And if you haven’t had him (maybe I missed it), how about interviewing your dad?

  112. November 22, 2008

    Great Show Gary,

QOTD: Recently I’ve started drinking more wines from the southern Rhone and my favourite region area so far is Vacqueyras. WTLV has only ever reviewed 1 bottle of Vacqueyras, way back on episode #36! I think these wines have really good QPR compared to overpriced Chateauneuf-Du-Pape (well it is in the UK). Likewise i’m really feeling the thunder from Gigondas. Hope you can fine some good wines from either region to taste on WLTV soome.

Okay so u show a new glass, did a search on Stemware & glassware, got: Not Found. Sorry, but you are looking for something that isn’t here.

GREAT show, Garry- I’m a HUGE fan of Tannat… after it’s decanted for about 3 hours!

QOTD: Ok- I had a lot of ideas (including *Savenniers, *Nerello Mascalese, *RI Wines) BUT- HERE ARE THE WINNERS OF THE NEXT OUTSIDE-OF-THE-BOX SHOW!!:

**LARIMA DI MORRO** (varietal), most often grown in the MARCHE region of Italy, (although the varietal is sometimes called Larima di Morro di Alba)
—This varietal is truly distinctive and unique wine and should be explored on your show.

**TAZZELENGHE** (varietal) from the northern FRIULI region of Italy.

Both of the above wines are distinctive, under appreciated, underpriced (in many cases) and have NEVER had the privilege to be showcased on the Thunder Show… until now! See what you can do. Gracias, Sir.

I’ve enjoyed 2006 Domaine du Chateau Larroque Cotes de Gascogne. It is Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Tannat. I don’t know the percentages. I’ll have to check a map but I’m guessing Gascony and Madiran are sort of kind of nearby. Maybe.

I’ll have to work on my homework for the QOTD. I’ll be back.

I actually did a search for PERU the other day to see what was going on there, since it is Pacific Rim, next door to Chile, and has crazy microclimates in being near the equator but with lots of elevation, deserts, valleys, etc.

Do more than cut flowers and artichokes come from Peru?

    Gary–
I love your show and have shared it with many here in the Great Lakes State where there are many vineyards. As our auto plants are tanking out, our wine industry seems to be holding its own. Have you ever done a show on Michigan wine? If not would you consider it? I bet we could find some folks who would even welcome you to do it here in the state.

QOTD: well I didn’t get any Bulgarian hits, and I’ve heard Bulgarian wine is good (maybe as good as Croatian). Also, my dad is a big fan of El Dorado and Amador Counties in CA, I didn’t get any hits for those either. And I only saw one Bonarda episode which only had one wine.

  122. November 22, 2008

Oh, yes DF. I have had some chilean cabernet… Casilero del Diablo.
It was the equivalent of having a glass of nitroglycerin in your mouth and then hitting your head hard into a concrete wall.

Should be interesting to taste something from Peru…

Here are some wines Ive had which I dont see at winelibrary. These are pretty interesting, these spanish wines are awsome, specially the bodeas nekea el chaparral de vega sindoa which is a grenache based wine. Then you have bodeas aalto where the old winemaker for vega sicilia started his own wine label. Then I was fortunate enough to try some wine from domino de atuata, their single vineyard wine from la mala very very interesting and from what I know hard to obtain. Also Cirsion from Bodega Roda, a very interesting wine which has a very select wine picking process.

Hey Gary, I agree that I would like to see more in the smaller areas of south central coast- Paso Robles, Santa Ynez, etc. But an area you haven’t covered at all from what I can find is Mexico. I honestly would like to see a show on Mexico’s Baja California wine region. I don’t even see this in the archives. There are some surprisingly good wines from that area. Another thought is that you could do a tour of all of the AVA’s in the USA. I would like to have your thoughts on wines from Vermont and Maine and other places that are not known for their wines as well. You could do a wine tasting tour of the United States!

  126. November 22, 2008

QOTD – I would love to see a little more love thrown the Canadian way. I can not find anything on the Niagara wine region. I hail originally from the Pelee Island area and was so excited when i found that episode, even though I knew you’d hate the wines. They disappoint me as well for the most part, but then again, Pelee Island hasn’t been seriously producing for very long. Niagara is far and away the larger and more serious wine making region for Canada (…or at least here in Ontario). BTW, it’s pronounced peel-E, as in orange ‘peel’ with a hard E on the end, not Pele like the soccer star or the amazing brazilian valetudo fighter.

Gary, you love MMA. I know it. I can feel it. It’s okay. Come out of the closet. It’s nothing to be ashamed of!

  127. November 22, 2008

    ex-lurkdawg

Thanks for another good show, Gary. I’m glad you asked this question. You might have noticed that I’ve been asking for a while for you to do a Madeira show. I don’t think you’ve ever tasted a Madeira on WLTV. I’d like to see you do 3-4 (preferably 4) different Madeiras including a vintage Madeira at the end. I had decided not to mention this so often anymore, but it is my first response to your QOTD. I think Madeira is so cool (and strange) that such an episode would be a great opportunity for you to drop some knowledge and get people thinking about a wine that is often overlooked in America.

  128. November 22, 2008

I’ve read the wines from Madiran have relatively large amounts resveratrol.

    hey Gary…
there have been a couple shows I always thought you should do. I saw some others say you should focus on the Niagara region in Ontario. I vote for that as well!!
Also, I think it would be a fun show to do “celebrity wines”—for example Wayne Gretzky has his own winery now…and I know there are a lot more..I’d be fun to see you’re take on some of their wines!

  133. November 22, 2008

    BobbyTiger

Unfortunately, I’ll have to pass on the Tannet. I’ve done the math.
Hold the wine for 15 years……I’m now 66……….Hummmmmmm.

    More shows on Zins
    Love the Torrontes
    Argentine Malbecs
    Tempranillo

Possible guests? Google Chef Nathan Lyon.

Note to “T.Bone” I too love Alice Waters, but I’m afraid that Gary would blow her out of the park.

  134. November 22, 2008

I couldn’t come up with anything that you hadn’t done a show about yet. At work I have become the go to guy with recommendations of wine for our guests and the other waiters always want to know where all my wine info comes from. I have read books and magazines and all that but I have to say you have done more for my wine wisdom than anyone. Thank you for the time and effort you have put in for us, we really appreciate it.

QOTD: I collect mostly Italian wines and there are so many unknown grapes and regions from there that I would ask for some of them. Primitivo maybe. Rosso di Montalcino? Gattinara? Prosecco? Some of the lesser know whites?

Or…Maybe some non shiraz Australian wines. Your recommendation of the Leeuwin Cabernet for my Thanksgiving last year was the wine of the day and I have stocked my cellar well with all their wines. Let’s see some more Margaret River love.

  135. November 22, 2008

QOTD: I know you’ve done shows on Tuscan wines and Sangiovese, but I just had a nice bottle of Morellino Di Scansano and wouldn’t mind seeing a show on it.

BTW, nice job on Fox and Friends this morning… It was on a little too early for me but I DVR’d it….. Question for you GaryVee, what’s up with the tumblers? Tumblers on the show, tumblers on Fox?

    Hey Gary,

Would love to see a show devoted entirely to Port. There have been Ports feature before, but there hasnt been a whole show yet. If it’s been as cold in Jersey as it has been here in Kentucky the past few weeks then it’s def Port time!

    @BobbyTiger – Tempranillo!

I almost forgot about that amazing wine. Another favorite of mine since my trip. I just wish I could remember the producer of the Tempranillo we had while down there. It was just such an interesting and yet downright delicious wine.

    Hey Gary !

nearly 3 years of WLTV and like a great Bordeaux, just getting better with age !

QOTD: Could you do an episode on DOC/DOCG Sardinian wines (from Italy). Red (Cannonnau) and white (Vermentino)

these wines are not really talked about, it would be a great episode to discover new wine making regions (just like the Madiran show you just did)

Gary great episode this wine sounds like something I would really like….I love the dry bitter tannins :)

I love the format and energy of this weeks shows. It seems as if you are having a lot more fun with it, and to me that is what drinking wine is about.

QOTD: You had a wine glass episode (155) a long time ago, and it was very cool. Now we know that the shape makes a huge difference. My next question would be…How does the quality of the glass change the flavors? I have tried wine from a “cheap” glass and an “expensive” glass, but not side by side. And do the “breathable” glasses really make the wine appear to be in a decanter for 1-2 hours after 1-2 minutes? I have tasted differences, but I would like to know what you think!

    Gary great show once again
It pains my heart when you predict a jets loss
however it was awesome of you to predict a jets victory in the playoffs
    nicely put(realistically put as well :) )

Show Idea: I would like to see you interview or talk about Jorge Ordonez and a few of his wines. His impact on the Spanish wine scene is worth the discussion.

    Great show today.

    Gary,

I would love to see you talking about Portuguese wines. There’s so many options, there’s vineyards in all country ;P Portugal started to export wine to Rome during the Roman Empire. Luso, how the portugueses are called many times (Portugal is the Lusitania) was in Mythology son of Bachus ;) ). There are 23 Demarcated Wine Regions and only some varieties of castas are authorized in each region: for instance the Region of the Vinho Verde wine also very close to Douro and Port wine, classified a World Heritage by UNESCO. Another is the tremendous type of wine produced in sandy soils – The Colares wine, one of the most expensive because of the lack of lands available for those vineyards – located outside Lisbon, between the foothills of Sintra (another World Heritage village) and Roca Cape (the westernmost point of both mainland Europe and Portugal). :D
Would be a great show made on any great Portuguese wineries and you’ll be so welcome. If you decide to come anytime please tell; I would love to help ;)

if possible some dessert wines out of australia. ie rutherglen world famous tokays, also, a show dedicated to port and all the different classifications. it can get kind of confusing. love the show btw. always entertaining.

This is gonna sound weird, but i dont really drink a lot of wine, so i’m useless for the QOTD, BUT I wanted to point out the cycle of love on the thunder show. Gary loves wine and life and inspires the vayniacs. In return, we love wine and life and gary, and inspire him to love wine and life. And the cycle continues…

Gary, my man! First time poster. Love the show. How about a Verdejo episode?? Could be sick…

homework of the day i should say … my friends and i this Sunday are doing a vertical tasting of Clerc Milon there are 10 of us so we took the vintages 1995-2005 and put them in a hat and chose at random, i was the very lucky one to choose ‘05. So the first place i turned for research was the wine library but no results :( so long story short i would love to see you do a show on this famous 5th growth thanks Gary.

p.s. the ‘05 clerc milon is wine spectators #11 this year!

  151. November 22, 2008

Hyde Vineyard – someone mentioned that.
It would be cool to compare producers w/ a single-vin designation. Like Hyde, Stagecoach, Monte Rosso, etc. See if we can actually taste the “terroir” from a particular vineyard.

    Lance Bradstreet

    QOTD-

As a new watcher I wanted to check out some older episodes before I answered the question, I was shocked when I was watching the box wine episode when the comment about the Cleveland Browns was made! Ouch! My beloved Browns bashed by Vaynerchuck!

Back to the task at hand, I love the cheese episodes! It would be great to see an episode on how to put together our own wine tasting, and how to properly put together a wine flight for guests.

  153. November 22, 2008

    Derek

I would like to hear your take on the Washington Hills wines. Also the Archetype Barossa Shiraz. All of those are very budget driven… from 7 – 12 bones in most places. I have a hard time finding many of the wines you recommend, and would love to hear your take on wines that have a large saturation in the market and give a good bang for the buck.

    Thanks Gary!

  154. November 22, 2008

    Andrew

QOTD: One thing I’m definitely curious about and (doing a search) didn’t find anything specific on is canadian ice wine…kind of an obscure little niche, don’t hear much about it and I think a show devoted to that would be great.

  155. November 22, 2008

Why not do a show on Tannat in its new ‘homeland’…….Uruguay.

  156. November 22, 2008

    marco

QOTD: How about a show on the wines of Chelan, Washington. Lots of great wine coming out of there and it’s looking like it’ll be the next designated AVA in Washington. I spend a lot of time there, so if you want to narrow it down to tasting from five or so wineries, I’d be happy to help with the process. Have a great weekend!

  157. November 22, 2008

I’d love to see some more Georgian wines on Wine Library TV. I’m living in that region of the world for a while now, and from what I’ve seen Georgia really brings a lot to the table in terms of wine.

  158. November 22, 2008

    Chris

I’d LOVE to see more shows on wines that are more earthy and vegetal. less fruity. something that will break away from the typical wines that people drink. Personally I’m into that. Also interested in the differences in wines between different years, how the flavors change from year to year especially in old world Burgundy…Pinot Noirs~!

  159. November 22, 2008

    Steve O

Interested in trying the Tannat, great show!

To your question: I had a great Hungarian dessert wine and would be interested in hearing more from you on Hungarian wines.

I searched for chartreuse and absinthe and did not find either. Perhaps you expand our knowledge in these areas as well.

    Thanks Gary!

    Teresa Ramôa

Following my previous comment, and while it’s still awaiting moderation, i would like to add that I didn’t watched all the Wine Library TV episodes (YET! ;) ), but from what I’ve seen concerning the Portuguese wines, you talked mostly about Porto and normally paired with other countries wines, like Spain. But I think Portugal deserves to have a dedicated show, because of all those wondrous Regions to talk about. What about the Vinho Verde region, so different from anything else in the world? What about that wine made in sand soil, the originality and uniqueness? What about all those Alentejo wines, soooooo rich!!! Just to name a few…
Another suggestion: Why not leave the office and make more shows in the “REAL places”; I think your TV can produce more of that ;) .
Hoping to hear good news about that and keep on going with the great changing of the wine world ;D

  163. November 22, 2008

Chris, Yes, You did a FAB job with the camera on this and MANY episodes!!!! Thanks!!!!!

    Future shows:
    1.) Wines from Santos-Beck (Argentinian)
2.) Wines from Sebeka (South Africa)
3.) Have a guest on who only drinks White Zin / Franzia, etc. and see how they like other wines like Rieslings.
    4.) Blind tasting of Gewurtztraminers

  166. November 22, 2008

GV, on your worst day you have 110% more mojo than most. I think the Thunder show is like a Tannat – here for the long-haul!! Long may you continue.

QOTD: Barrua & Cheval des Andes vs. Sassicaia & Cheval Blanc (maybe same respective vintages?) – big boy joint ventures, head to head with their progenitors.

  167. November 22, 2008

    Oklahoma Michael

QOTD= Margaret River Chards or Rieslings. They are the best things coming from Australia right now and have been for a long time. Not Shiraz you say??? Get out of the box!! come on!!!

  168. November 22, 2008

    Kimberly

QOTD: You shoudl definitely do a show about wines from British Columbia. They are making world class wines and fly way below the radar. I can help you get some if you like Gary!

    Rani Haykal

Ive already left one comment but thought of another idea or two:

    1. Radikon wines – there is a pretty interesting story behind the Radikon wines from how they are made to why they are in 500mL bottles.

    2. Im sure this has been mentioned before but Caduceus Cellars with Maynard James Keenan as a guest (singer/frontman for Tool, A Perfect Circle, and Puscifier).

Vin Fou a sparkler from Alsace….OMG and “Vin Fou” Polair from Henri Marie WTF……http://www.henri-maire.fr/page/henrimaire-vins-fete-foupolaire/

MEE TOO, I’m with you “Smahlatz”

How about some wines from the Granite Belt area in Australia. It seems to be an often overlooked area when people think of Australian wines.

  175. November 22, 2008

    Dan Manu

    Hey Gary

Wine Lib only has one Romanian wine listed:
Terra Dacica Cabernet Sauvignon… Any other interesting wines coming out of Romania that you know of? Could be a really cool show!

Also on the theme of unknown wine producing countries… no wines listed from Moldova, Bulgaria and Peru!? Surely wines from these countries would be screaming values if they were any good… might be just the thing we need in today’s economic climate :p

C’mon Gary time for you to expand your pallet … and maybe educate us along the way :)

    Cheers,
    Dan Manu

You promised me a “Lesser known wine varieties from Australia show” about 6 months ago, maybe you could do one on this instead!

  176. November 22, 2008

    Karl B

    Gary,

nice show with the Madiran. Just south of there in France provides me with my answer for the QOTD.

QOTD – There is nothing found for Jurancon. Jurancon white wines are either dry or sweet and are very reasonably priced. You could run two shows, one where you compare the dry to the chenin blancs or muscadets of the Loire or pinot gris or Oregon, and the other where you compare a sweet Jurancon against the more bodied versions of the Alsace Gewurztraminer. Because you, with a little bit of me, we’re changing the wine world, aren’t we?

Hey, great show! I’d be really interested in some more dessert-wine style shows. I searched madeira and marsala and came up with nothing for either. It would be awesome to get your opinion on a selection of either, plus a little education as well!

  178. November 22, 2008

    Jordan

A second answer to the QOTD/AOTW: South Western Australia wines- I was in the Perth/ Fremantle area two or three years ago and they have many great wines (especially whites) for under ten bones! I don’t know if you can get them in the states though.

  179. November 22, 2008

Roederer’s Cristal? Haven’t seen it. Probably overrated, but I’d rather not throw down the bones to find out. Great show. I just started watching it. I work at a wine store in Minneapolis and have been spreading the word.

QOTD – didn’t see anything under Spatburgunder.

First I’ll say I found it easier to click “episode archive” at the bottom of the page and there’s a list of topics rather than just a shot in the dark search. That being said:

QOTD: Here are my top 3:

    1. How about a tasting of wines made from grapes native to America? I found nothing on wines made from the catawba/concord/Niagara grapes.
    2. Fortified wines- there has been some port & sherry, but I could find nothing on marsala or madeira.
    3. I’m really exciting by things going on in Canada- I was just at Niagara on the Lake a few months back, and would love to see more from that region. And Canadian Ice Wines haven’t been done in nearly 500 episodes! Speaking of ice wine, I couldn’t find any episodes featuring German eiswein!

And just a general idea- I know you frequently bring winemakers on the show. What if when you travel, you find a winery to visit & (if they allow it) give us a tour and/or show us a tasting of their wines in their tasting room?

  184. November 22, 2008

    Ryan Smith

QOTD: You should review some of the wines from Rubicon Estate. I’ve had some really outstanding bottles from Rubicon especially their 2004 Red Zinfandel and their 2002 Rubicon.

  185. November 22, 2008

    Carly L

    I can’t wait to find a tannat!

QOTD: I want more Italian wines, man.

  186. November 22, 2008

Gary, great show. I’m curious to see you give Smith-Madrone wines (Napa) a sniffy-sniff. Smith-Madrone was reviewed positively by Eric Asimov in the New York Times, and my wife and I visited this small winery up in the hills west of the Napa Valley in May. We were given a lovely tour by one of the brothers, Charlie Smith. I think they make a great cab, chard, and riesling, but I would appreciate your opinion.

Could you do one show for each US State? I’d love to see a show on Maryland wines so I could find something fun that’s local. Shop Local – Buy Local…

I have only had one Tannat and I for get the producer. It is an interesting wine if you like tannins.

I ‘ll look for a search in the future.

    Good show.

  191. November 22, 2008

    Peter

How about a show on the miniscule A.O.C. in the ‘Garden of France’ featuring the Romorantin grape of Core Cheverny. Another way to shed light on the obscure as you have done here with Tannat!

    Thanks for your e-mail reply!

  192. November 22, 2008

Cool ep. Good fun, as always.

qotd: Austrian, Fuchs Sauvignon Blanc. Quite good, and a bit offbeat. Reminds me of a nice Sancerre.

QOTD: I would love to see a CDR episode, as there are many screaming values out there, especially with some 07’s hitting the shelves. I was floored by the quality of the 06 Kermit Lynch selectionee CDR. 11 bones, totally rocks, gorgeous purity with no oak to get in the way. Awesome stuff. Would love to see what other rockers are out there.

    Carmignano wines
    Sweet wines: Banyuls, Beerenauslese, Eiswein…

Thanks for a great show from a former lurker in Sweden.

Hey Gary, good show…WOW, a POWER wine for 10 “bones”!! … dude, you just about get a good six pack of (insert microbrew name here), for 10 bucks! I just realized, that wine to beer PRICING has changed significantly, in the last 3 or so years! It’s obvious you are making an impact. As wines have gained in popularity, more product available & more competion, so price drops. (Marketing 101)! Sorry, on a tear…

QOTD: Tried 2 new (for me) types of wine recently…Proseco & Viognier. They were awesome! GREAT with food! (Spicy food at that)! I’d like to see something about sparkling wines as alternatives to champagnes. Thanks, for asking, man. You are the best! Good luck to NY Jets today..it would be great if they won just to se Mondays show…YOU would be OFF THE HOOK!!!

We need more cheese on the show. Nice job with the chocolate

    Hey Gary

    QOTD:
    1. A wine from China

Now let’s talk about some Australian wines. You always stereotype Australian wines as big Shiraz based fruit bombs, but this is just a certain style from a couple of certain regions. The American market perhaps encourages this style of wine, but hey let’s get down with Australia’s real wine diversity.

    2. Tasmanian sparkling wine (Janz, Clover Hill, Arras etc)
    3. Coonawarra Cabernet (this is an all time classic Australian wine style, why haven’t you done this yet???)
    4. Hunter Valley Shiraz (Shiraz maybe more your style)
    5. Hunter Valley Semillon (oh yeah…)
    6. Eden Valley Riesling (You’ve done one of Grossett’s from the Claire – try an Eden Valley one)
    7. Tasmanian Riesling
    8. Henty Riesling (maybe hard to find)
    9. Western Australian Riesling
    10.Grampions Shiraz
11.Old style Victorian Cabernet (Balgownie, Talbilk etc)
    12.Yarra Valley Cabernet
    13.Geelong Pinot
    14.Mornington Peninsula Pinot
    15.Mornington Chardonnay
16.De Bortoli Noble One (The best value/quality dessert wine in the World!)

Let’s see some good Australian wine reviewed!

    Cheers

Great Friday show (that I’m lazily watching on Sunday morning). I love Tannat.

QOTD: I know how much you love Petit Verdot, but I don’t think you’ve ever done a show exclusively on offerings of that great grape.

What about a late harvest zinfandels?

I’m glad you feel recharged. We all benefit from high-energy Gary! Keep being you!

  211. November 23, 2008

How about doing a Muscadine show? I’m down here in Florida where it’s pretty much all that grows. We have several local vineyards but I’m interested in what you think about the varietal. I gotta say, it’s probably one of the most unusual grapes on the freakin planet (and to be honest I don’t even like the grapes themselves).

  212. November 23, 2008

Hey Gary, look for some cold hardy wine varieties and didn’t find any… Check out Frontenac, Frontenac Gris, LaCrescent or St. Croix. No hugely mainstream but I’m sure they would pleasantly surprise and educate some folks!

QOTD: 1) I had mentioned a non-alcoholic wine show awhile back. Could be interesting.
    2) I also miss the days where you were doing some crazy stuff, like with weather and other things. Maybe put a bottle of wine in a paint can shaker to see if a lot of agitation can affect an unopened wine. There are proteins and other things in wine that don’t like being agitated a whole lot, so it could have an effect.

    Hey Gary,

Don’t get upset, but that bottomless pit of football knowledge – Yahoo! Sports – has today released a story stating that while twelve NFL teams make the playoffs, only the seven listed below have a chance of actually winning the Stupor Bowl. Those seven teams are (in order from least likely to most):

    7. Dallas

    6. Baltimore

    5. Green Bay

    4. Pittsburgh

    3. Arizona

    2. Tennessee

    1. The New York Football Giants (good for YOU, Mott!)

Guess this opens up your January, huh…?

Txakoli – lets jump into Basque country.
Two other ideas that I only found single references to:
    Langhe Nebbiolo (great values!)

Leonard Kreusch 2005 Liebfraumind Rheinhessen from Germany.

I got this wine for Christmas in 2007. Drank it in August 08. Very light and smooth. Is very sweet, almost desert wine like. I will be buying more of this.

GV – good show, I do not know a lot about Tannat, but I like to learn and taste.

QOTD – I would like to see a show about the whites and reds of Greece. I know that you had wines from Greece before, but it would be good to get a little bit more history and some knowledge as the funky grape names from Greece and what they resemble from the Old/New World.

  223. November 23, 2008

A tasting with three different Riesling from different countries for example: Germany Austria New Zealand… ;) would be cool

Enjoyed the show. I would love to see you find a 100% carignan. Decant, decant, decant. I would also like to see a map of the wine’s region inside a map of the county put into the corner of your screen while you are talking about the wine.

QOTD. Gary – how about red wines from Sardinia? Obscure grapes (cannanau, monica, bovale, malvasia nera), great value. You could do a set of 4 from Argiolas, from the low end (Perdera, Costera) to the high end (Korem, Turriga).

    Hi Gary,

At first I was thinking of nero d’avola blend from Sicily (e.g. a Cerasoulo di Vittoria) but then I noticed that you have tasted a nero d’avola at the Thunder show. But what about a cannonau di Sardegna? Basically it’s a grenache but with it’s own style.

Another suggestion: What about some of the fabulous wines from Languedoc that Jeffrey Davies served at the WL Super Tasting in October? La Negly for instance?

    Cheers,

    QOTD:
The red wine from Chablis, Irancy would be interesting. This is not a wine but Calvidos. Perhaps a show featuring different importers and their style, Louis Dressner.

Gary, Really looking forward to meeting you and the “staff” at the wine library this Tuesday…I figure you’ll have calmed down, (a little) by then! HUGE win for the Jets! I’m picking up an on-line order and will say “hi” while I’m there. See you soon, Best, Mike

First of all, great show on Tannat – although I would have expected a show on Tannat to have more than one wine. Second, congrats on the Jets huge win over the Titans (although I have repeatedly said that the Titans were NOT the best team in the AFC let alone the NFL. I mean, Kerry Collins? Come on!

Here are my show suggestions: Barsac as a region; Morocco as a wine region (check out Alain Graillot); Chinese wine.

And for the record, I’ve never left. :-)

Nice Jets win today. When we (the Bears) played them a few ago I was not impressed and thought they were not the team reflective of their record. You guys exposed them for they are…an above average team that is very beatable. My boys played well today, too, and showed some real spunk. Lets hope we both stay tough, play smart, and kick some ass during the last 5 games. Your Jets, pound for pound, got a fighting chance to go deep. My Bears…not so much.

QOTD: I’d love to see something that is always mentioned as a flavor profile in wines, but have never had myself: Cassis.

Also, wine from the countries we never hear of- Slovakia, Greece, India & China, there must be some wine producing African countries too.

why are the shades closed behind you? Were you not in your office?

I like the stemless glass. I use that at home as well. Hand warms the wine, awakening the “sniffy sniff.”

All I can say is, taste more kosher wines, maybe include them in secret packs if you are so big on getting people to try them, and there was one that was previously corked- retry that one.

Very interested to see how it develops over the weekend.

QotD: Irouleguy, negroamaro, counnoise, monica, and vin jaune from Jura. And wines from lesser-known regions (US and international) are always welcome.

(Oh, what about China? I’ve seen more and more Chinese wines, haven’t consumed any. I’m leery (!) but agnostic and curious if any are any good. Perhaps for a Lunar New Year show…)

Tannat is the Bret Favre of red wine. Like rock salt on the face in the morning. It toughens one up, if you can get down with that. In this bizare economic climate, when everybody’s on the take, it would do all of us good to toughen up. When the going gets rough, the Tannat crowd sail a yacht thru it. Keep Rocking it Gary, and thanks for keeping it real.

Would love to see more Temecula wines (kind of a selfish request because I live in San Diego)

Also would like more crazy shows like the different temperature wines. I suggested on ustream once a 7-11 show. Just go to a 7-11 and pick out some random good wines. Might be good for the imploding economy.

    Go JETS!

QOTD: How in the world can you do 582 shows and only do ONE Monterey wine? That’s down right criminal. Chateau Julien (just about everything I tried there was off the charts good, especially the Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Sangiovese Rosatto, and Black Nova) , Bernardus (the Marinus and Pinot Noir are highlights), Marilyn Remark (the Marsanne, Roussanne, and Grenache are wonderful), and a host of others deserve your attention.

English wine! Stop laughing, we can do it. You could do both sparkling (ever had any?) and still (not to everyone’s taste, but when we do it right DAMN we do it right), & even get a side trip out of it when you’re next this side of the pond. Come to Plumpton College, only English language wine courses at university level in Europe, both production & business. See our vineyards, play in our pocket sized winery. Jancis opened the new wine centre last year last year, so you know it’s got to be good…

One thought on Tannat corresponding to what you’re doing. Best advice I was ever given on a Madiran (Ch.Montus ‘02, £14, god knows what you’d pay there) was from the bloke selling it to me. Buy it, open it, wait 3 days it’ll be right. Opened it on the Sat, took a glass out, window imploding tannins. Stuck the cork back in. It was perfect….on Thursday. Stunning wine.

Those babies are BIG. But given time, they’re just astonishing.

QOTD: There are some wines that I would like your views on for sure – French Jura Region and what about Barsac, Priorato, Schioppettino of course I can’t find any of these and they are probably obscure but they might be fun to get your hands on!!

GARY! Love the show. My wife and I have been watching for about a year and a half.
I’m from Arkansas. In the “River Valley” we have 4 or 5 vineyards that have been around since the 1800’s.
There is a unique wine made from Muscadine grapes that is produced at these vineyards from our natural grape. It has a really different and interesting taste. The vineyards (Post and Wiederkehr are the biggest) also produce the classic wines but the native “Arkansas wine” is Muscadine. You’ve gotta try it! It is … interesting. Also, the Post family makes a great Chardonnay. Another interesting vineyard is Mt. Bethel. They make a lot of fruit wines and they have a 10 year old tawny port called “Big Daddy” that is an AWESOME Christmas wine! It taste like nuts and chocolate!

    A Little History:
Way back in the day, the French wines were being attacked by a disease and it was wiping vineyards out in droves! They found out that the hardy, wild Muscadine grape stalk was resistant to this disease and exported the Muscadine stalks from all over the south (Texas, North Carolina, Arkansas, Missouri, etc…) to France. They grafted their grapes onto the stalks and it saved French wines!
So, you’ve GOT to try the Muscadine wine! Savior of French wines.

Also, almost every state has a vineyard or grape that they call their own. You should do 50 shows of the 50 state wines. Just an idea.

    Thanks!

QOTD: I’d love to see more on blended wines – the propietary blends that many wineries produce. I was always of the impression that these were of lesser quality, but have learned that this is not true. Learning to find value in these blends is a skill I’d love to hear more about.

    Great laid by show Gary!

QOTD: Box wines. There seems to be some drinkable box wines out there these days. No I’m not talking Franzia! A good example is Black Box. I tried their Cab the other night and its really not that bad. It was a table wine with some character.

    Three things:

    1. HUGE congratulations on a smashing JETS victory!
    2. The only result on a Michigan wine search is St. Julian Riesling. Come on Gary. You know Michigan can bring more THUNDER than that! Try the whites from the Leelanau Peninsula and Old Mission Peninsula.
    3. The biggest THUNDER SHOW! A head to head competion between reds renowned to bring maximum thunder. A Tannat vs. Cahors vs. California Cabernet vs. Barossa Shiraz vs. Barolo vs. Dry Creek Zinfandel type thing.

Keep the education coming, I love learning more about wine.

QOTD: I didn’t find a clear answer to my search, but I was wondering if you ever had a Russian wine on the Thunder Show. What kind of wines are native to Russia? Russia hardly ever comes up in a wine discussion… why is that?

Glad to hear you’ve gotten a “fresh” feeling about the show, etc. Gary!

After the game on Sunday, I’m sure you are in an even better mood! Congrats!!

I agree wholeheartedly about expanding the envelope wine-wise. A lot of the vintages that my wife and I began with (mid-90’s Chards and Cabs from Cali) seem SO “done” now, that I am far more intrigued with the old world selections I learned about from your show.

QOTD: I searched “unfiltered” and came up with only 2 hits – maybe a show with just those?

J-E-T-S! JETS! JETS! JETS! Enjoy time with la familia this holiday!

    Gary -

Congratulations on the Jets knocking off the Titans! Wow! the Jets are certainly bringing some Thunder this year . . . the polar opposite of my lowly Niners . . .

    Anyway,
QOTD: Challenging homework . . . how ’bout a show or two on fortified wines? (Port, Sherry, Marsala, Madeira, Vermouth) Each offers a huge range of styles. I think it’s a good time of year for these types of wine as well.

On a side note, just received (safely) my modest shipment of Doisy Sauternes and Hetszolo Tokaj from WineLib. Thanks! Looking forward to having them for Thanksgiving.
Say, were the green wristbands sent with the Thanksgiving Secret Packs? Had to choose between the Secret Pack and the Sauternes and Tokaj. Must admit that a little bit of me had hoped to see a green wristband inside my shipment . . . but no . . .

Let’s see an “UMBRIA” show. Looks like 3 shows have included a single Umbria selection. WAIT……..Lets take this ONE BIG step further…

Pick a country/state series. (Don’t go as far as AVA, too many selections for one show) IDEAS for selection process #1 Put the NAMES of ALL the states/countries/small region (for states that have MANY regions) that produce more than 10-15 wines somewhat readily available. Drum roll…have MOTT’S hand dig into the receptacle (that could be fun in itself) that holds ALL the names. Select one a week. The following MONTH feature 3-4 of the wines representative of the selection. KEY – in downtime economic era..price range should be under $30. WHY A MONTH LAG TIME??? to allow you to research and get the wines in stock for resale :) Also you can list the countries and dates on the website after selection and before airing. People can plan ahead to watch what ever region they’re interested in, hopefully Sort of AROUND THE WORLD IN WINE, one week at a time.

Well, that was a HUGE win for the Jets – hope you enjoyed the beatdown yesterday. Looking forward to the continued lack of shaving…

QOTD – I looked for some uncovered area, but kept failing. This might be due to WLTV’s scope and coverage, or my lack of creativity… probably both. One thing I would like to see during the next few weeks would be a growers champagne episode. Great bangs for our New-Year bucks.

Searched for Northern Michigan. No results.

Specifically Leelanau Peninsula. There are several excellent vineyards up there with some very unique wine makers. The cold season seems like the last place you would find them, but The 45th parallel runs straight through the county creating conditions similar to France and Italy.

It’s an interesting and beautiful place, and I think the Northern Michigan episode is LONG overdue!

    Just do it Gary…

QOTD: Searched “niagara” in the top left, got nothin. Come to the Niagara Region of Ontario; some of the best wines in the world (especially Vidal and Ice Wines).

    Thats my suggestion.

Interesting show on the tannat! I have had a few petit verdots that were also hard as nails and need a decade plus of aging.

QOTD – how about a Washington State Zinfandel show? Washington isn’t known for zins, but there are, remarkably, some great zins up here. We also have some 30+ years old zin vineyards that produce some interesting wines. Forgeron Cellars and El Mirador Winery (Walla Walla), Maryhill, Kiona, Thurston Wolfe, and several other producers here all make some sweet zins. Not fruit bombs, but some, like Forgerons, are earthy, terroir driven efforts with just enough fruit and that briary characteristic that you know what you are drinking. And, the alcohol levels are not as big as Shaq’s shoe size! Peace

Very interesting. Had the 2004 Laplace at a friend’s shop couple months
ago. That one was tight as well but had it again later on that week (same
bottle) and it got much better. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you.

QOTD: LAMBRUSCO! The good stuff. The really good strains like Grasparossa.
Very underated and some of the best pizza wines around.

QOTD: Paso Robles wine area in California and look at several area wineries. Jack Creek, 4 Vines, Tablas Creek, Turley, Rabbit Ridge all have a good variety. Choose zins, syrahs and rhone whites, no cabs

Dude, you were a little off on the score for the J-E-T-S, Jets, Jets, Jets game. Have more faith in the future, especially if you hope to own the team.

    MikeRinBC

    hey Gary!

I recently discovered WLTV and I can’t get enough! I’ve been pouring over the archives and soaking up the wine knowledge. Loving the regional highlight episodes like this one.

QOTD: Possibly a biased request, but I grew in the Okanagan Valley in BC, Canada and I would love to see you feature some of the up and coming wines from that region. BC’s wine industry is growing like crazy (from 15 wineries in the 1980’s to over 150 today!) and generating a lot of buzz… possibly thunder? I’ll leave that for you to decide Gary.

  310. November 24, 2008

    Gary,

An up and coming wine region in Argentina is Patagonia… there are some phenomenal Pinots and of course Malbecs from the end of the world… interesting area and some interesting wines… If interested, I’ll be happy to send you some!! thanks for the beautiful shout-out, I am humbled.

    Best,

great show gary–i REALLY like the educational WLTV episodes. I havent tried tannat–I remember you doing it before–but I definitely will soon!

    QOTD:
Answer from the other side of the pond

English Wine – Surely there are some imported into the US. We have some of the world’s best sparkling wine and very interesting whites (Bacchus) and Loire style Pinot Noir.

Biodynamic Wine Making – Wow do we taste some interesting wines here: eg Chapoutier, Domaine Leroy, Frog’s Leap, Bonny Doon, Mas de Daumas Gassac ……

Limoux in South West France, where sparkling wine all begun

Unusual stickies …. Banyuls (oh what an extraordinary collection of tastes), Late Harvest Condrieu – for me the ultimate dessert wine (maybe because I am English and love marmalade), Quady Winerys Black Muscat (yummy candy), then the MUST HAVE Christmas dessert wine Inniskillin Sparkling Ice Wine with it’s tiny bubbles adding a zest …. and I would have suggested Brachetto d’Acqui …. But you have already “done” it!

Chateau Musar – what a story, making wine in the Bekaa Valley of Lebanon while bombs are going off and making wonderful wines at that

Wines of the Northern Rhone – come on, let’s face it the inspiration for so much Californian – Cote Rotie, Condrieu, Chateau Grillet, Saint Joseph.

I could go on to say how about doing something on the Tannats from Uruguay, or the wonderful blends of Atlantic (ie Cab Sav / Merlot) and Mediterranean (Syrah / Grenache etc) that is found in the Appellations of Malpere and Carbardes, near the ancient city of Carcassonne – the inspiration for Walt Disneys Snow White Castle, but I won’t

  315. November 25, 2008

    Eric S.

Great win for your jets. As for ideas for shows, I think you should do a blind tasting of long island wines and a few shows dedicated to port, both tawny and late vintage.

    Hey Gary,

My suggestion is trying a monthly or weekly “weekend getaway” show where you highlight a specific wine region in the US (who can afford a getaway to Europe these days?) and a couple of the best wineries in that area that both casual and “serious” wine drinkers can visit and enjoy. What better way to spend some time with the loved ones than a weekend trip? Plus, it would give you the opportunity to cover all the favorite “little” regions that everyone is suggesting.

    Thanks! Love the show!

    Hi Gary,

My wife and I would love to see you review “Garnacha de Fuego” (Spain). Its by far our favorite everyday wine. And at around 8 bones, its hard to beat when you go through wine like we do. :D

GV Literally just returned from Paso Robles about 4 hrs ago. I had checked the “library” before I made the trip in hopes of finding some gems to visit. However, I didn’t find that many reviews on Paso wines (maybe 5). I think the quality in Paso has made significant progress since my last trip 3 yrs ago. Let’s see some Rhone Ranging from Paso (maybe Tablas Creek, L’Aventure).

I searched the producer “Larkmead” the other day and didn’t find anything. At $50-60 for their cab, its delivers in more like the $100+ price range. Plus, their LMV Salon cab, at $80 is a joke. It’s so much better than Opus One, Caymus Select, Insignia, etc. Maybe you shouldn’t do a show about Larkmead, so the word will not spread and their prices won’t go up.

  327. November 26, 2008

You have done a few scattered Tokaj shows but as this is one of my favorite dessert wines how about one just on Tokaj? I can’t get my wife to drink Tannat after we had the first one. It really needs to be open most of the day even for me and I love tannin.

  328. November 26, 2008

QOTD – I would love to see a Meursault or a Saint Roman show.. I think they go quite under the radar for white Burgundy – a search brought up only 3 wines. Chilean syrah/shiraz would be good too.. only 2 wines reviewed so far.

    PSPatrick

QUOTD: I would really like to see some episodes on the lesser known wine growing countries in Eastern Europe (Hungary, Slovenia, Czech Republic, Romania, …) and other upcoming, “under the radar” countries like Russia, India and China; maybe also another episode on Mexico and Brazil.

QOTD Gary I’ve emailed you about this before, seems this is my chance to get it on though, I’d love to see some wine from Kent in England, I’m from there myself and have been hearing exciting things about their wine and sparkling wine.

    Much love, Keep on going,

Hey Gary. One lurker looking from the back of the class. Huge props for the show. Wish you answered my email back in Sept. though…

    I digress

QOTD: Chateau Maris 2004 La Touge Syrah. I’m quite the wine neophyte and I know that 2004 was a great year for any wine, but this is like buttah wrapped in some kind of silk-velvet hybrid in the best way possible.

I know you may not like this idea, but I would love to see Wine Shop at Home wines. While they may not be killer wines, they are decent and people can afford them. The company is totally on board with changing the wine world, when you can hold the tasting in your home and try before you buy! Just a thought…

QOTD: Searched for several small Washington producers and didn’t get any results. Amavi, Covington, Sleight of hand, and more. That’s one idea. A similar idea is a show focusing on the small production winemakers that have full time jobs in addition to making great wines.

Gary, nice show. Thank you for the continued education. How about a show on some of the crazy basque varieties. Hondarabi zuri/beltza?

I had a tannat from Uruguay- definitely an interesting grape!

QOTD: Brazil! I had a great sparkler at Clo Wine Bar that was from Brazil. But I’ve heard a lot of good things about Brazilian wine (and even met a few Brazilians in France during the harvest) and I’d love to hear more about this area.

    Hi Gary,
Another great show…I was thrilled to see this show on Madiran & Tannat, I just got a bottle of Tannat from Argentina this week. I have a couple of Madiran in my cellar I will taste one this weekend!
This is my first comment, I’m a new “Vayner” since I got an IPod for my birthday in August. I love you show….and a temporary Jet Fan for this year until Tom gets back in the game…
QOTD -I’m wondering if you ever had the chance to taste some Marechal Foch (this grape variety is often considered to possess Burgundian characteristics, having a vibrant, deep purple color, with a light-medium structure and dark berry fruit characteristics. Some tasters find the similarities to Burgundy Pinot Noir become more pronounced with age)…if not check out Jost Winery in Nova-Scotia Canada (www.jostwine.com)!
    Have a great day!

QOTD: Sierra Nevada Foothill wines. I realize they may be hard to come by on the east coast, but I’m sure YOU could find some. Wine Spectator, Parker, etc. are starting to notice them (e.g. Cedarville, Perry Creek).

Same question as krazy9000 as to vintage of Laplace Madiran. Gary tasted the ‘04 vintage in Feb ‘08 and either the ‘05 or ‘06 in Nov ‘08. If this wine needs time in the bottle, is that the reason for the disparity in Gary’s analysis between the two tastings? And as the label does not show the vintage year, how is it possible to tell the vintage year? Unless it’s on the cork or the case box. Please let me know if the second tasting was an ‘05 or an ‘06. Thanks.
