flynbrianl: I managed to resist that exact thing. I WAS second. :)
    Dream job1 – pro climber.
Other than that, I’d love to be a professional eater and drinker, but unfortunately this does not classify as a job…

Awesome show. Great to hear a fellow “Badger”’s perspective on the wine world. That sounds like a once in a lifetime opportunity.

  17. November 25, 2008

    E dog

    Hey Gary,

That was a great, straight from the heart episode. I could really see the passion for wine making.

QOTD: I would love to have a place where people could have great tasty food and chill out with friends around a coffee or a glass of wine. (and my wine list would be 50% old world and 50% new world), not like most places in the UK where a so called ‘good wine’ has to have tons of fruit and sugar and say “gallo” or “jacobs creek” on the label. (sorry for the rant but it drives me nuts)

Food and wine paring really brings the drinking and eating experiences in synergy to another level when it is done in a balanced and honnest way, with the custumer’s individual interest in mind.

    good question by the way!

  18. November 25, 2008

    Jay Campbell

One of the best guests ever. I like how someone above asked if she was single. Nice.

QOTD: Either play on the PGA tour, in the MLB (preferably for the M’s), or I really would just like to eat and drink and get paid.

  19. November 25, 2008

I liked your guest, but I gotta be honest, if I have to fly to Denmark to buy a bottle of this wine, I lose interest in the episode…

Pretty good show though it would have been great if the wines were half decent. Oh well. What can you do. Sweetheart of a guest. And I’m sure she speaks French? I’m melting now.

QOTD: Starting pitcher for the NY Yankees though I hate ‘em but you said “dream” job. But to be more realistic (though I was drafted by the KC Royals out of high school during the George Brett era) I would say I would love to own a small Eurostyle B&B in the Virginia countryside where I can cook and serve wonderful wines.

    Cheers!

    GO COLTS!

    Jess

Really enjoyed this episode, and your guest. Hearing her story and learning about possible wine adventures out there is inspiring. QOTD: A few months ago left my “normal job” and started working at a fine dining restaurant. It has been challenging to start over, but very rewarding. Trying to build my food and wine knowledge so that one day I will be a sommelier. Would like to run a restaurant or bed and breakfast. Taking care of others is my dream job.

  27. November 25, 2008

    Pete G

    Good show.

  29. November 25, 2008

    Robin C

QOTD: I think I’d be a marketing consultant for French, Spanish, (and Spanish speaking countries), and German wineries helping them to present their wines (bottle labels, etc.) in the most advantageous fashion to appeal to different markets in different countries. But it would be hard to do all that in a day.
I like the beard, but it doesn’t really make you look older if that’s what you were going for. I hope it wasn’t. No need.

QOTD:I love wine and I love food and I love people. If I could mix all three, get people to drink good wine and enjoy awesome food; If I could have people experience the pleasures of life to the extent that I do, whatever profession that would be, I’d be a happy man!

    Prost!

  32. November 25, 2008

Not feelin it with today’s show, meh french wines.

Awesome episode. Fronsac is a not so well known area on the right bank, however, has made some fantastic wines. La Vielle Cure is one of my favorites!!

Ms. Murphy was a fun guest. Very cute and a natural in front of the camera.

    HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE!

I hope the secret pack is good. I didn’t go for it this time.

  55. November 25, 2008

Good show Gary. You certainly went the extra mile to show the contrast in color between the two wines, lol. Also… very good guest, I loved her, she was very charming.

QOTD: My dream job is to be the CEO of one of the faceless vineyard-owning corporations you two mentioned. Hehe.

  56. November 25, 2008

    Timinspokane

Groovy show Gary Veeeeeeeeeeeeeee! She was a fun guest, and her excitement from having been on Fronsac, helping with the crush and living the life, shows big time.

QOTD – I would like to be President of the United States of America and reverse the socialistic path our nation is on, blindly following a man, and his anti-American, anti-Constitutional agenda, they really know nothing about, but I don’t think I could get enough done in a day for it to be a “dream”… ;)

So…. that said, I would like to be one of the judges on “Iron Chef America”!

  57. November 25, 2008

Good show. I enjoy all of the good looking guests lately. Distracts us from your familiar mug!! They are mush more pleasing to the eye.

QOTD: What I am doing now, but in Singapore or Bangkok. Awesome places.

  61. November 25, 2008

    Anne

Fantastic episode. Loved the guest, loved the rocks, loved the extreme lengths that you went through to get the shot of the different colors in the wines.

Oh, and for all of menfolk who found yourself fawning for Kristen–you should know that she also plays the flute brilliantly and makes an excellent beer biscuit. :)

  62. November 25, 2008

    Scott EJ

What a cutie. Love that youthfull energy and exhuberance. And the fact that she loves wine….she’s a keeper.

    Dream scenario / job.

I get the call on the bat phone, its Warren, “Lance we need ya kid!” The very next day Warren Buffet announces me as the new CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, and we all ride of into the sunset!

    Great Show! Great Question!

QOTD: I actually am already working in my dream job.

  69. November 25, 2008

    Lynda S

QOTD: I guess working at a winery in the fermentation room. I am a biochemist/science nerd and i love my eukaryotes that give us wine.

I just watched an episode from a couple of weeks ago. Gary, you said you would do a Michigan wine show. Should I email some wineries and help get the ball rolling. Wonderful job Kristin, but I am a spartan and I am not able to appreciate badgers. Sorry, but brilliant job.

  70. November 25, 2008

    ChinonRouge

I really enjoyed the show. Your guest brings a fresh perspective and good knowledge. She seems like an intriguing person. I wish her the best of luck in her promising career. I would enjoy hearing more about her experiences making wine in France.

My dream job: being a professional bon vivant. How about being someone who is independently wealthy and restores great chateaux situated on the Loire river while dabbling a good bit in wine. Mix in making some sort of positive contribution to society, and I think that is whom I would like to be.

  71. November 25, 2008

    CanadaSean

cool episode, anything that makes me think of moving to France is great by me.

    QOTD: Adventure Guide/Sommelier/Cage fighter!

p.s. I wish I could eat dinner with this many people who loved wine every weekend!

  72. November 25, 2008

    Laurie in VT

Very nice episode. You’re a natural, Kristen! I can see you hosting a wine program: Maybe “Wine School TV” or perhaps “This Old Winery”? :) (I’m not kidding about you being host of a wine program, though!)

QOTD: If it were only for 24 hours, I’d take a break from my daily dream job(s) and either drive a Formula One race car or ride in a steeplechase.

  73. November 25, 2008

    Anthony L.

Hey What were the results of the suggestions for future show topics? Where any decisions made? Just curious.

  74. November 25, 2008

My dream job would be having Alfred Hitchcock’s job from 1949 to 1965…or owning a restaurant from which I did not (necessarily) have to make a living (Preston Sturges…Robert Deniro) but just got to surf the vibe. I have hypothesized that my Catholic middle school basketball coaches – in their failure to transform my blinkless enthusiasm but (then) non-comprehension of the game into something more, denied my generation their ‘other’ Steve Kerr (unstoppable jump shot as long as no one came anywhere near me)…But, honestly, in terms of freedom, fulfillment, daily good eats and inspiring companionship…my current job isn’t too bad.

  75. November 25, 2008

    jason carey

Lets be honest.. you always say to trust your palate. 2002 is not a terrible vintage. its just not great.
As many people say . trust the winemaker more than the vintage

  76. November 25, 2008

    jason carey

Gary remember, by european standards, 8 euros is not a cheap wine. all my friends in
France only drink wines under 5 and they can be very very good.

  77. November 25, 2008

QOTD: My dream job would be something to do with the wine industry of course but my real dream would be rich enough to not need a job!

  78. November 25, 2008

    laposte

Truly enjoyed Kristen you both seem so passionate, not just wine but with life.
I cannot think of a dream job, I must be content working in an elementary school, it is rather humbling getting a big hug from a 6-7 year old.

  79. November 25, 2008

    Roberto

hi Guys, nice guest, love her accent, wish I had heard more of her in french…

QOTD: President of the United States…. and Kristen, by the way, you are very, very good looking.

Great show! Thanks for bringing great content every day! What’s with the end of the show credits: “WINELIBRARYV.com? QOTD: I am so blessed to have my dream job, lots of sacrifices along the way, but it’s all worth it!

Great guest, nice to see a fellow Badger on the show!

QOTD: Hmm. I’ll get back to you. Wait. I’m it already…. A dad to two great kids.

  82. November 25, 2008

    GR8wine

    Gary & Kristen,
Great show. This is grass roots wine tasting at it’s finest. This is like what I experience every weekend when I go out and taste wines at the local wineries. They’re not the best but they have character and “terroir”. I’m a little surprised that the 2000 didn’t stand up better but then again every winery is in a different place to take advantage of what they get. I totally understand.
    Keep up the good work!

  83. November 25, 2008

    Glen,....winecrazy.com

I liked that show….great camera work MOTT!!!!!

QOTD: I would love to work with GARY VAY-NER-CHUK for one day. And since we all know that’s not going to happen…. I would say a undercover Room Report Hotel crtic who get’s to stay at different hotels to report to owners on the over all experience and every detail of the stay a customer would normally encounter and evaluate them on everything from hospitality, customer service, food and beverage, maintenance, cleanliness, room service, restaurants and how the hotel employees treat the guests and so on, etc……

    Dream job for sure!!!!

  84. November 26, 2008

    Kevin

I have a soft spot for Fronsac, and dug the banter and enthusiasm – I was glued to this ep. Great guest.

QOTD: if somebody would pay me well to spend time with my family all day, that’d be pretty darn great.

  85. November 26, 2008

    David T

    Great camerawork!

QOTD: I’ve known I’ve wanted to be a pharmacist since the start of high school. I’m about to graduate from college with a pharmacy degree & can’t wait to get out into the field!

  86. November 26, 2008

    johnnyutah

    Great episode…

QOTD: For one day…be a team rider in the Tour de France.

  87. November 26, 2008

    Ray Barnes

Pretty good show. Too bad the wines were not as interesting as the guest. For once it was nice to hear French words correctly pronounced. If the winemaker was trying to make a statement by producing a cabernet sauvignon dominant wine in Fronsac, it was unfortunately not very convincing.

QOTD – A symphony and opera conductor, especially the Wagner Ring cycle.

  88. November 26, 2008

    lawschooldrunk

great camera work, Mott! nice laid back tuesday.

gary, stop playing with your beard :)

nice guest, she seemed to parrot gary’s every move but that is only because they are both in sync and thinking the same things. they could probably finish each other’s sentences in this episode.

to JohnnyUtah, wouldn’t you rather ride the giro? it’s not in the summer and it’s not as hot. I’d just like to be retired, spend time with the family, and ride my bike 6 hours a day. not really a job so I didn’t answer the question.

  89. November 26, 2008

    Lindsay

Awesome job, Kristen!! I’m so excited that this finally happened!

You all, this girl is a true, die-hard Vayniac — when we were working at the same wine shop last year, the very first time we met she grabbed a piece of paper and wrote down this Web site. You’ll love it, she said (and she was right!).

Kristen has organized Wine Library TV tastings with our tasting group (WASTED), brought home Thanksgiving and Christmas special four-packs from Rhode Island (since WL can’t ship to Wisconsin) and is easily one of the most passionate, intelligent drinkers I know.

With Kristen, I drank my first Barolo. We all miss her in Wisconsin!

QOTD: I am working in my dream job (fine arts reporter/sometime wine writer) but for one day it would be awesome to work at a fine chocolate shop.

  90. November 26, 2008

    David A. S.

QOTD: I would spend a day visiting the homes of moms and dads, teaching them about their computers, removing their fear of technology.

  91. November 26, 2008

    Yimosan

    “G”
Really enjoyed the episode, listening to your guest speak of the vineyards and the every day life there transported me back to Europe.

I lived in Kaiserslautern (Rhineland Phalz region) for 6 years, it’s about a 45 minute drive to Metz France; Man, I miss the wine fests and the harvest celebrations, what a blast.

QOTD – I just landed a contractor job with the U.S. Air Force here in Florida, a position I had sought for the past 3 years…however, my dream job would be to become a renowned chef…a la Anthony Bourdain!

  92. November 26, 2008

dream gig…..doin it. Violin maker. thanks to my wife!

QOTD: I would love to work for one day at at Alinea Restaurant in Chicago, as a 1st cook or something of that level. not the a stage peeling carrots all day.

  94. November 26, 2008

    YoungDave

Great show- she’s repin’ RI! Love the personal story feel.

QOTD: For one day? Fighter jet pilot… or a Hollywood socialite with no responsibility and nothing to do but go out and be seen, spending money that I didn’t have to earn.

  95. November 26, 2008

    willrun4wine

Awesome show Gary with the most awesome guest! Kristen, you were great!! As people have already said, you were a complete natural in front of the camera talking about wine. Can’t wait til you’re back in town in the spring and we can have a WASTED reunion.

My dream job: to be a mom (but that of course will be for more than one day).

  96. November 26, 2008

QOTD: Maybe a wine writer… getting paid to travel the world sampling wines. That is only if my girlfriend was with me. Maybe just running owning my own wine business… importer/exporter, something like that.

  99. November 26, 2008

    Tom who?

QOTD: For a day, my dream job would probably be a professional musician

Gary you should totally get a random person off the street and on to the show, or just somebody who doesn’t know wine that well and doesn’t know the show. That way they will be totally unbiased and give their truthful opinions! It would be an amazing episode!

  100. November 26, 2008

    Susan B

I don’t know exactly what the dream job title would be but I always wanted to do something involving wine and food, maybe something also involving their depiction in various art works. Too late now.

Such an enjoyable episode…I’m glad to see that Kristen is so passionate about her wine and what she is doing and how she is following her dream!!!!
    I’m thankful for \/\/!

QOTD: I would love to work at Winelibrary. Its nice to dream…I will totally settle for just educating people about wine..in any format in any context at any time…I’m working on accomplishing it one day at a time!!!

    Gary -

Though I’m typically not a big fan of the guest episodes, I thought this one brought the Thunder! Great job by Kristen and yourself (and let’s not forget the Mott-ster!).
I felt that Kristen brought very good knowledge, and a great level of enthusiasm to the show. I had the feeling that this time you actually gave us your honest feelings about the wines tasted even though Kristen had a direct attachment to the wines.
    Fun, informative show.

QOTD: Restaurant cook/chef – I’m sure it’s very hard work, but I’d still like to try it for a day just to experience how difficult and rewarding it actually is.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving to all of you at the WineLib and all the Vayniacs out there!

Fronsac! Great job Kristin and Gary! At a younger age, in the time before my palate was ready to understand Bordeaux, I’d found Fronsac to be typically tight, but found that the perfumed scents of the wine are a great deal of what this is all about.

Several years ago, I saw the last bottle in a store of Michel Rolland’s Chat. Fontenil ‘98, and still priced at $25! I knew that after the recent succession of vintages, that kind of price would never be seen again. Held it for a few years (among a home par of less than two cases of various gems), but was forced to enjoy it in late 2006, for a dinner for friends. Man, it’s not my nature to be a hoarder, but I didn’t want to let go, cause the next bottle would surely cost closer to $50. At eight years, that wine had just enough time to point what it would be able to do with even more time. It drank gorgeously with strip steaks, and I was really happy to share something special.

  108. November 26, 2008

    ex-lurkdawg

Thank you both for another great episode.
A dream job for me might be a sommelier at a fancy restaurant on the day of a high-end wine dinner.

    Murso

Having kept wine, woman, and song as something of the themes of life, and lucky to have worked with very good food and wine, and played music from Seattle to Finland, basically, I’ve been fortunate to have subscribed to the Joseph Campbell creedo “Follow your Bliss”. While I’ve certainly enjoyed much of my work, and though I’m far from rich, and it troubles me not that I probably will never be, when I dream, it is definately not about a job. But in the spirit of knowing that in the world, there IS much work that needs to be done, I’d be head prosecutor in the trial for Treason of W and those other criminals on the hill.

  110. November 26, 2008

    Murso

And Kristin, I hope you get to Denmark. It is unforgetably amazing, from the kindness of the people to the architecture of cities that are over 100 years old.

    Duh. thats over 1000 years.

Fun show, Thanks GV and Kristin!

QOTD: I’d like to be a novelist or screenplay author. I really enjoy the art of writing and love movies as well. Then I’d retire to my own vinyard where I would serve wine and socialize with its visitors. And my wife and I could sip wine together till the end of time!

    Priceless!

awesome show, love guests on the vino shows, and this one was awesome.

QOTD: My dream job is to be a graphic designer (almost there).

  115. November 26, 2008

    Rylan

If I could work one day in my dream job I would definitely be a chef. Anthony Bourdain style! Oh, Gary you should try to get him on the show. That would be epic! Also, I agree with the Vayniacs, you are getting the magic back.

  116. November 26, 2008

    Shawn_944

    Kristen was great!

QOTD: My question is why arn’t you doing your dream job fulltime already… I am, I am just not getting paid very well for it yet, more free then anything, a Fire Service Administrator

  117. November 26, 2008

    Michael Schoonmaker

What an awesome guest! I love the fact that she’s NOT a VIP. I mean no offense to those who’ve invested years of their lives into wine. Props to them for devotion and expertise. HOWEVER! (Waves hand at camera a la Gary V.) Having another “normal” person’s thoughts heard is far more interesting to me, personally.

QOTD: For one day, I’d have to go with professional jazz/swing singer. But for long-term, I’m doing it. Three cheers for being with 38 Studios.

  118. November 26, 2008

    JigglyJock

Great episode. I thought Kristen brought some great knowledge to the table.

QOTD: Brew master at my own brewery.

Good episode, enjoy the knowledge even though I probably will never taste the wine.

QOTD – Major league baseball announcer.

  129. November 26, 2008

    Keith Brown

Holy crap Gary, I think you found a new co-host. No kidding, there was a nice symbiosis there… QOTD: I hate to be a downer, but there is no dream job. A job is a job is a job. Even if you love it, there will be days you don’t feel like doing it. I have plenty of interests, but the minute I need to commit to it to make a living, I’m not so enthusiastic. Maybe it’s just me. Anyway, all that aside, I’d be a commercial pilot. I’m already a licensed pilot, but I have to pay to fly, so I’d rather fly to get paid I guess.

  130. November 27, 2008

    apj_bobswineguy

QOTD: Ironic. To work a harvest start to finish.
I have really been considering applying for an internship the past few weeks. 2009!
    Is this episode a sign?
Great guest. She has the passion and took the criticism of her “family’s” wine w/ out getting defensive. Plus, her answer about what she got out of her experience was interesting.

  131. November 27, 2008

    vinoBlue

Interesting episode GV… different perspective that we’ve never seen before, like it. Keep up the good work, and Jet’s victories ’cause I like when you’re in a good mood on Mondays – keeps up the spirits don’t you know!

QOTD: Why would I want to do my dream job for only a day? That’s a waste of time…I’m working on doing my dream job for a living – go figure! My dream job is doing food research and development, i.e. I want to professionally play with my food, and that’s exactly my prepared line for career day.

  132. November 27, 2008

    Kristen

That is quite ironic apj_bobswineguy! I think it is a sign. You should definitely go do a harvest if you want to. It’s such an amazing experience (but be ready for some *long* days and the emotional roller coaster!

  133. November 27, 2008

Nice ep. as ever. And a very nice guest … .
Yet, Kirsten, think about this: I’m a Belgian, so I’m – how do you call that? – full-bred European. When I heard you tell you experienced an anti-idyll in Bordeaux realizing that ‘even’ European wine is big business with bankers, insurance companies, etc. owning châteaux, you struck a string somewhere. I think you should come back and travel around OUTSIDE Bordeaux: yes, there is big bizz everywhere, yet, European wine is not all that (I know, you didn’t say so). Real wine lovers – not the ones who can afford bucket loads of money on a crappy ‘great’ wine – are getting so fucked up over here with a lot of people outside of Europe equaling European or French wine – whatever – and everything involved with it with Bordeaux. That’s quite a narrow view to say it politely. Travel to the Rhône, the Languedoc, the Madiran, Corbières, the Loire, the Côtes-de-Duras, the Elzas and you will see that winemaking still is for a large part a family business, even a tale of families struggling against the outflattening, evening, undifferentiating effects of globalisation. It’s the diversity inherent to this huge mass of small growers that is in fact key to the expression of real sense of place you talked about. Large owners aren’t interested in this ’sense of place’ as it hampers the insurance of big revenues (so important for their shareholders): a wine tasting different, a wine you need to know the maker, his family and their idea about wine making before you can love it, is to difficult to market, to difficult to be sure about solid revenue (read i.e. Linda Murphy’s column about consolidation of the winemarket in last November’s Decanter).
I think you should keep that in mind when you do your research on globalisation and French wine.

QOTD: a winemaker in the Jura.

The Tasting Note - Peter Wood

I do my dream job every day – running a wine shop. I just wish that I owned it rather than running it for someone else.

  145. November 30, 2008

    BobbyTiger

    I dunno.
Traveling to another country, France in this instance, to study wine? And get college credits for it? Sounds great to me…….for a vacation, but the cost of those credits has to be enormous. I would like consideration of the colleges to not only continue their global thinking, but to act locally. (It’s been said that we have a couple of pretty good vineyards here in the States). Having said that, the show, as usual was very good, and Kirsten was enjoyable.
QOTD- Strange as it sounds, I am pretty much doing what I like to do.

  146. December 1, 2008

    JayZee

Nice show. Kristen did a great job and was totally at ease. Her stories and information was quite interesting.

QOTD: I’m not sure what my dream job would be, but I think it might be something to do with Major League Baseball. I guess I would be a player, but I lack talent in that area so that probably wouldn’t work. But even being a sportswriter covering a single baseball game would be awesome.

great show! loved the guest. nice to have someone we can identify with visit. a learner, not an expert though she seemed to be very knowledgable.

…whether they like it… or not. Did you give up on that or what? I miss it.

So, being from denmark, I’ll have to keep my eye out. I’ve not tried it before, but there is also a lot of crap wine from bordeaux up here.

QOTD: Rock star. How do you get an internship for that?

Great episode. Love it when you have an interesting/enganging guest on. Hope there’s many more in the future! QOTD: IF I had the talent, to be able to spend a day in the studio making music with someone like Ornette Coleman or Pat Methany. The possiblity to not only play with someone of their talent level, but to have my imprint stamped on something that would be around forever would be an amazing experience.

    Kittysafe

    Cute guest, single too… MROW,
but she didn’t bring the thunder in terms of expressing her opinion
of wines after tasting them and Gary had to carry that part of the
show, but we know she’s new to the wine world and she does have a lot
to offer and will only get better.

She also brought rocks from France which is awesome.
