Wait, didn’t you do the Clio in 3 previous episodes? Don’t tell me you’ve gone through every wine in the shop, and are going back through the newer vintages of old wines? And where’s the Beau Nouveau show???

How much for the open bottle of Clio? You guys must’ve set a record on case purchases today. Great job!! I’ll have to find it locally as my state (IL) has handcuffed WL from shipping to me.

QOTD: Neither. Gimme a naked Barbie any day.

Nice show. Would love to try the El Nido Clio some time (any vintage).

Both of those wines sounded impressive, but I would take the red over the sweet white for the sake of value. I am not convinced the glass was sufficiently rinsed after the first wine to give a completely accurate picture of the color of the second wine.

    Happy Thanksgiving!

QOTD – neither figure on the table.

I’m glad to hear you liked the 06 better than the 05. I only got to have the 05, so I don’t know what the previous vintages were like. But, anyways, 05 was really good, but didn’t rock my world. I think it was over hyped for me. I’m glad this 06 looks to be an even better effort. Thanks for the review, Gary!

  27. November 26, 2008

Awesome Ep. The Dolce did look like liquid gold. Don’t really like the sweet wines, so probably wouldn’t buy it, though I wouldn’t turn down a glass if offered to me.

The hair on your beard is rivaling the hair on your head!
    Happy Turkey day!

Are you growing that 11 o’clock shadow to catch the gravy tomorrow? hahaha — Happy Thanksgiving. Say a cellar prayer for me. I’ll be in rural Kansas, hoping to find a good bottle of wine to pair with turkey that does have the words “Strawberry” or “Hill” in the name. ;)

Hooray, Jumilla!! Yep, I loves me some Monastrell (Mourvedre). Keeps it in the realm of inky black fruits and earthiness. A site says that Chris Ringland is the winemaker!!! – couldn’t find the winery’s own site , if they have one. Been diggin’ on the Jorge Ordonez purveyed products of Juan Gill and Finca Luzon for several years, among others, and I could almost say it’d be hard to meet a Jumilla I didn’t like. At $10, even Guy Anderson’s Mad Dogs and Englishmen has had some rather notable days, albeit, nothing like these big boys. EASILY worth $34. God eye on including it in the book, GV.

Dolce? Delicious? Yes. Seventy bucks? No, thank you. I’d take a Chateau Les Tertre du Lys d’Or Sauternes for under $30. I’ve actually had French Sauternes for under $20, and trust me- when you host a pouring, they love it like it’s d’Yquem. I’m definately not a sweet tooth guy, but the occasion inevitably comes, when you benefit by pouring the lady/ some ladies ‘the stickies’. Hey – good on ya’ if you’re lucky enough to be one of the rich guys… I’m stuck relying on resourcefulness, economy, thrift to optimalize the modest few bucs I have. GV’s right – there’s lots of stuff that performs remarkably well for 1/2, or even 1/3 the price. But I DO look forward to the event where the finest IS called for…

    Great show GV! Happy Thanksgiving..

QOTD: He-Man by far! Castle Greyskull anyone? Thundercats were cool, but they didn’t have a castle…

    Thundercats. Duh.

  38. November 26, 2008

I love their faux ‘Belle Epoch’ imagery. People eat that stuff up as classic art. But then, again, they eat up Thomas Kinkaid. I set a Kincaid x-mas card to a friend in Philly, and he emailed me back “What a Master. The Philly Art Museum better get right on that , and put one of his paintings up , next to the Rocky Statue!!!!”

  39. November 26, 2008

    QOTD:

I have absolutely no clue . . . did a quick Google and there are a huge number of He-man sites compared to Thundercats, so it looks like He-man is the popular choice. But hey, if someone prefers Thundercats, then more power to ‘em!

Clio was the single biggest allocation headache I’ve had in my wine career. Retailers would offer their first borns for a case. Jorge is an evil genius for the american market.

great show, lots of info, thanks for sharing.

QOTD: I’m going to have to say He-man was the coolest, while Mum-rah, Liono, Panthro and Chetara were really cool figures, and cool in there own right, nothing can toucb how cool He Man figures were, case of point, one word; Stinkor.

  68. November 26, 2008

    Steve

I’ll try to find the Clio, even though it’s a little out of my normal price range (I try to hang in the less than $20 range). Gotta tell you the truth, as a kid, I never played with any of those action figures, so I can’t comment on that. I was born in 1960, so we played with little plastic army men and GI Joe, that was about it. Except I did have a cool Evil Knieval (sp?) with a motorcycle.

  69. November 26, 2008

    He-Man without a doubt…

Thanks for the low-down on Dolce

    1. Was your ‘aging quarterback’ comment (greying, new team) referring to #4?
    2. I’m almost liking the beard at this point!
    3. QOTD: I don’t know much about either, but I’m going to break the trend and go Thundercats only because the kids in Ghostbusters 2 really dissed the Ghostbusters in favor of He-Man.

Qotd: Thundercats. They had a touch of ancient, large cats, and made you want to be part tiger. grrr. smile. He-Man, just had limited vocabulary and a villain that looks like my turkey skeleton the day after Thanksgiving.
    THUNDERCATS! Can you imagine?

Secret Pack – I’ll do Sunday afternoon. thanks for it!

Beard. hmm. grow hair and lose the beard. smile.

QOTD He Man although I didn’t care for either I despised the Thunder Cats I was in junior high when the Thunder Cats became popular. Star Wars figures were better than both and Lego is the King of all toys.

Love the brutal honesty, per usual…. keep it up, GV! QOTD: That is a TOUGH call, but I’m going to give it to He-man. Just my gut response. Btw Gary, have you seen the He-man/She-ra Christmas Special? What am I thinking, of course you have… I gave it to my brother for x-mas last year along with some other He-man videos and i do believe it was the best sister-to-brother x-mas gift ever. Have a happy turkey day ~

  93. November 27, 2008

QOTD – I really like He-Man toys, and the show. Also, I learned all the basics of football through He-Man, when my older brother (by 8 years) and I used to play video-game style football with the figures. Big guys for the lineman, smaller guys were running backs. The guy with the telescope neck was the QB. Ram Man was the FB – he could open the holes.

    Happy Thanksgiving!

Great SHOW!! I have to say that I had the 2004 recently and the oak was a little overbearing, otherwise a massive bomb with lots of second and third tier flavors outside of the fruit realm.

QOTD: I only knew He-Man in my childhood, so He-Man wins hands-down.

    Hi

It will be great if you could also put the rating of wine along with the name in the “Wines tasted in this episode:” section of your webpage. After watching the video we can’t remember the ratings given by Gary on the show then we can refer to the names and ratings on your webpage. It helps specially for the episodes like Monday’s one where 6 wines were covered.

Gonna have to find tht Clio! Sounds fantastic.

Another killer fruit bomb, but impeccably balanced and with nice bright acids, is the 2005 Dumas Station Estate Merlot (Walla Walla). What a killer merlot, much in the style of Leonetti and, in my humble opinion, better than just about anything you will ever find in California. Especially for the price…. $25!!!

QOTD – never watched either of them, but give me Shaggy, Scooby, Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids, and a big glass of zin, and I am fat, dumb, stoopid, and happy!

GV – have had the Dolce and it is a nice dessert wine. Have not had the Clio, but I will have to seek it out.

QOTD – not really a fan of the action creatures, but I will have to say that my favorite is the Oak Monster!

QOTD: out of those two I would say He-Man. But growing up I was big into G.I.Joe and Star Wars Figurines.

Interesting little show. But I am terribly disappointed because I tried to order the Clio as soon as I got the e-mail last week and it was already out of stock!! Massive bummer! :-(

QOTD: He-Men, because my nephew really was into them and I bought a boat-load of them for him in the early 80’s.

    Thanks Gary

QOTD: He-Man. Thunder Cats were never big in Australia, but He-Man was MASTER OF THE UNIVERSE!

Great show, it might be pretty cool to occasionally pull in some of the wines that you scored in the book. I dig it. Again, loving the way you change up the show, keeps it interesting! Thanks Gary.

QOTD: Tough question, but I am pretty sure I dug ThunderCats more. I was the kid screaming Thunder! Thunder! ThunderCats – HOOOOO! on the playground. Guess I should own up to it.

I’d love to get my hands on a bottle of that ‘06 Clio!

Btw, sorry those Château Courazes disappointed GV! With that and the zin show, it was certainly a bad streak… :(

QOTD: Even though I didn’t watch either as a kid, I’d say He-Man as it was one of the “props” for when I was on. :)

Long time watcher/lurker but first time poster.

Took the big leap and got the Clio 2006 based on your podcast and I have to say my wife and I absolutely love it. I dont know if its me being brainwashed by the power of the Vay-ner-chuk but I see, smell and taste everything you described. Woot you rock!

Now we just have to get the Jets in the superbowl and things will be great in the world

    Keep up the GREAT work

lol…. I hope no wine ever makes me think of Beyonce. Shes just boring. I dont care for her music or listening to her talk about anything. No substance at all, and no style in my opinion. Both those wines sound very interesting. Think ill look up the Clio in my wine shop. Wish me luck! Happy late Thankgiving to all! QOTD: He-man, though today I would have to say pass on them both.

I’m relatively new to your site, but did a search and found this show on Clio. One of my favorite wines, I had it about a year ago in Milwaukee at a restaurant that charges close to retail for their wines. I loved it immediately and searched it out. I’m only sorry I bought just six bottles rather than a case +. For the 2007 vintage, what is the best time of year for me to begin searching for it’s release? I’d like to order before it’s sold out. Unfortunately, as much as I enjoyed your show on this wine, I realize it doesn’t help me keep what I thought may have been a bit of a secret! My mistake!! I now know I need to order early!!!!
