Really really good show, Gary, an absolute classic!! I really enjoyed it.
Unfortunately in my experience all american chocolate is disgusting! You’ve got to get some proper European Choccy quick! ; )
My favorite bar is Bournville and I eat it with wine all the time!

How can you eat all of those candy bars?

    QOTD: Hershey with almonds

Great show GV, although you’ve lost all credibility with my wife, doing an entire show on candy bar pairings… :) … No matter, she’s not a wine drinker anywho…

QOTD: Coffee Crisp all the way baby!!

  25. December 1, 2008

    Michael Schoonmaker

Awesome episode! When I taste wine, I drink the same bottle over a course of 3-4 days. Since I generally cook different food each night, I try the same wine in 3-4 different contexts. It’s great! One of the contexts I like to try for each wine is with a candy bar – just like this episode!

QOTD: Reeses. I know it’s not really a candy bar, but it’s just so good.

  26. December 1, 2008

    Deano

HAHA I love the ending there Gary lol….those wines all sound great….I need to start drinking more wines to clear out my cellar so I can start buying more :)

    QOTD:
-I am going to go with any quality bar that is 70% cacao or more and I usually will digg it….I like the bitter dark chocolates yummm :)

My 16 year old is psyched to watch this episode! Dinner first, however.

JudeMurphy- Callebaut chocolate out of Canada is phenomenal and is used in at least one american companies’ chocolates that I know of. (Belgium should never have sent the founder away!)…

Hey Mott…it only took Gary 10 mins to dis the Giants!! I KNEW he was gonna! After the Jets hhmmm…”performance”(read lack thereof) this weekend, I knew he was going after Plax! Gotta give him props for at least pointing out they are at a “different level” then any other team though! Thanks for the episode and for at least TRYING to be fair Gary!

    ex-lurkdawg

Thanks for another great episode. I must mention again that I think it’s time for a Madeira episode with a good vintage Madeira at the end. Please?
qotd: nutrageous. I love most of the peanut butter/chocolate combinations.

  36. December 1, 2008

    Kostandinos

    Great idea and great show!

Favorite candy bars: Violet Crumble. Gary, trust me on this one, especially if you love honey. This is an Australian candy bar and might be a bit harder to find here in the States, but it’s definitely worth it. People seem to either love this bar or hate it.

Other favorites: Baby Ruth, Whatchamacallit, Heath, 100 Grand, Twix, and Butterfinger. Top 7, right? :) Alright, if I’m on a desert island or stuck in Detroit and can only have one candy bar, I’m going Baby Ruth… easier to find than Whatchamacallit.

Think the Lions will go 0-16? I think so, but I hope not… that’s just bad. Jets defense let me down in fantasy, though Barton has been playing like a beast! See ya on twitter: http://www.twitter.com/suedecrush

Today’s episode would have made an AWESOME Secret Pack! Imagine getting four red wines in the mail with a bunch of candy bars to taste along with GV! That would ROCK!

QOTD: I’d prolly go with the butterfinger

  39. December 1, 2008

    JonE

Carmenere!!!!-this grape just doesn’t excite me at all. I can go on a malbec kick, and rah-rah for south america, but carmenere? Its like smoking a red pack and drinking cheap zin.

QOTD: okay so its straight up chocolate, but packaged as a bar: Hachez 77% Dark Chocolate. Yes it is the stuff dreams are made of.

  40. December 1, 2008

    HuskerJamie

QOTD: For regular candy bars I’d go Peanut Butter Kit Kat. But give me the darkest chocolate you can find in one of the fancy expensive Euro bars and I’ll be happy.

GV, I think you got ‘Battlehorse’ by mixing War Horse and Battle Cat, probably because Ram Man.

Great show. I swear that the moment I logged into the site I was drinking Turnbull 2005 Cabernet with a Dark Chocolate Toblerone. It was delicious and a hilarious coincidence.

QOTD: Right now I’m really into Green & Black’s chocolate bars. Also, don’t hate on Three Musketeers! It’s simple and delicious.

Gary’s gonna have a hell of a sugar buzz!

Personally, I’m not a “candy-bar” lover. I tend to stick to darker chocolates, 78% coco and up. It tends to go very well with Port and/or coffee (black). I must admit however, that I do have a soft spot for Reese’s and Toblerone. I should try pairing them with vino.

    Cheers!

    Great Show, Hoss…

I’ll try the merlot, my wife likes that varietal. QOTD: Hershey bar with almonds. Great show, sorry about your Jets losing, my Redskins did as well. Not a good weekend for football.

    QOTD: Nestle Crunch!

  54. December 1, 2008

    Toni

    Candy bars: Classic Toblerone.
    Chocolate: Lindt intense orange.
Really serious chocolate: artisan 70+% organicly grown chocolates from my local chocolatier

On the sidenote: Manner 60% cooking chocolate has the most amazing texture I have ever encountered. The smoothness is unparalleled even by Lindt. This is simply the texture made in heaven. It has, however that typical, pesky Manner “too fresh” taste I have no Idea where they get it from.

  55. December 1, 2008

QOTD: Today I will say Twix. My palate changes with candy bars too.

I’m not a fan of chocolate and wine.

Good dark chocolate is my fave. But I do have a weakness for Junior Mints and Milk Duds. Perusia chocolate bon bons are fun. It’s too hard to choose.

  61. December 1, 2008

    Anthony L.

Great episode. I have to say good ole fashion hershey’s bars are my favorite.

  62. December 1, 2008

    psychomike

QOTD: couldn’t possibly choose between Mounds or Sky Bar; Sky Bar is getting hard to find, though, and it only has 4 sections these days—I’m sure it used to have 5 sections in the old days. Great old-fashioned candy bar!
Carmenere is a wonderful varietal, but like many Chilean wines, it’s hit-or-miss. Some bottles/vintages/labels have awesome black fruit and cacao, some are just bland and boring. But I agree that these can be amazing values, and perfect with BBQ, too.

  63. December 1, 2008

    Robert Howells

    WunderBar is my fave.

  64. December 1, 2008

I have got to go with Almond Joy second place Cadbury fruit.

  66. December 1, 2008

As a kid it was Baby Ruth. Now it’s Hershey’s Special Dark chocolate bar.

  67. December 1, 2008

    Dominus

Now that was one helluva fun show. Never thought to pair wine with candy bars though we come up with tasting notes that reflect candyesque features, i.e. caramel, butter, chocolate, etc.

QOTD: Tough one since I’ve had them all since I used to work at a convenience store when I was a kid and ate my way through the entire candy case. Yes, the wooden ones with glass fronts. Favorite: I get sized for Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups with the “classic” Hershey bar a very close second.

Sorry about the Jets. I was sweating bullets watching the Colts online almost lose to the pathetic, no-count, worthless BROWNS! I would have put a gun to my mouth if we had lost. At least the Broncos are a pretty good team. And yes, you are right about the NY Thugs Giants.

    Cheers!

  68. December 1, 2008

    TMI ahead

I can no longer digest milk chocolate or much of anything milky, but when I can stand the pain I go for a classic Reese’s PB cup. With an apple, two cups make a perfect lunch if you don’t want to nap through the afternoon.

Dark Chocolate– anything with orange essence mixed in. Like Toni, I’m down with Lindt, product of my ancestral nation, Switzerland.

  69. December 1, 2008

    Dominus

Oh oh! The little woman wants to vote on this one. Though I said it was candy “bar” she told me to vote for Peanut M&Ms. Hey, I’m a wuss and bow to the missus.

Great Show, the other night I was having a glass of wine, malbec and ate a small 3 musketeers bar from halloween, was a great pairing.

QOTD: my number one favorite candy bars are reese’s. i know, not a bar, but chocolate+peanut butter=awesome.

i am sad about the jets loss, and beyond sad for the jets-beard loss.

    Great Show Gary,

Another wonderful educational episode…..Wine and Chocolate…who would have thought?? Not to long ago I tried a chocolate brownie with a Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon…..WOW what an experience!!!
QOTD – Can go past a block of Cadbury Dairy Milk Chocolate….just superb…

  75. December 1, 2008

    Tony

QOTD: That’s a tough one. I would have to say Snickers. Although, I also really like Twix – as a kid I thought that buying a Twix was the best value beacause you got 2 candy bars in one package. I also really like the Big Kit Kat Bar.

  76. December 1, 2008

    Yvettew

This was such an awesome episode!! I will definitely try this with your under $10 wines. Great lesson here.

QOTD: I don’t just have one favorite candy bar – I’ll have to give you my top three: Twix, 100 Grand, Milky Way. It all depends on what mood I’m in that determines which candy I want to have. Can’t live my life without them.

  77. December 1, 2008

    BW

1st of all, as a Denverite, I have to say GO BRONCOS !! (Sorry GV, had to put that in there)

QOTD: For the standards, I would go 100 grand also. For specialities, I would go Ghiradelli Dark Chocolate bar.

My wife & I commonly do a piece of chocolate or a candy bar for dessert with wine. Almost always a good choice!

  78. December 1, 2008

    Nathan Gilder

Gary, this is why I love your show. I would have NEVER, EVER thought about trying chocolate with wine. I’m tempted to try something like a Lindt Lindor Truffle. Too weird?

    Thanks for the fun

    Nathan

    Hi Gary!
I was moved to make it a POINT to tune in again… and this episode did not disappoint. It did, however, make me eat the rest of the candybar I was desperately trying to save for tomorrow. :)
Oh, I want to say the initial thing that made me realize its been a while was that another of your viewers, known to many as Syd Sonic, the drummer for the Spazmatics, was sporting his WLTV wristband at Friday’s concert. I like to think it made him rock just a little bit harder, if that’s even possible. He’s the awesomest. :)
    Anyway…
QOTD: Mars Bar (the one with almonds… I think they may have since taken them out… But I also LOVE peanut M&Ms.

  80. December 1, 2008

    SteveC

To me, candy bars do not go with wine, at all, not even a little bit.

If I were forced at gunpoint to eat a candy bar with wine, it would be a Special Dark, I guess, just because it’s a little bitter, with less sugar added.

I also don’t like chocolate cheesecake — a waste of both chocolate and cheesecake. Chocolate and cheesecake, separate from each other, are two of my favorite things though.

In general, chocolate and anything remotely tart just do not go together — they ruin each other. Each would be better without the other. Definitely a case where the whole is less than the parts.

    But that’s probably just me.

  81. December 1, 2008

    Michael Collins Jr

    Favorite candy bar, Twix.

  82. December 1, 2008

    J Crazy

I hate chocolate with a passion. Although I can’t think of any aroma I love more than real dark chocolate. My wife always gets little cakes and candies and before she eats them I always smell them for a few minutes. Also, if I eat chocolate I get mad mad massive migraines.

So my favorite (if there was one) candy bar would have to be a chips and guacamole bar. That would be amazing.

  83. December 1, 2008

    Lance Bradstreet

    QOTD-

I have to say #1 in my book would Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, but I’m not sure if that counts since it isn’t in actual bar form. So with that in mind I’m going to go a little obscure and say a Zero bar. If you haven’t had it try it, white chocolate delight! Skor bars are great too.

  84. December 1, 2008

Why didn’t you spit out the candy bars? haha.
GREAT concept of a show – paring is great! I was amazed no Zin’s, but that is cool.
QOTD: Heath bar. Snicker bar. no no, Peanut M&Ms… no, wait.. it’s

  88. December 1, 2008

    WineWoman

QOTD: Almond Joy (on a budget) Green and Black Milk Chocolate with or without almonds. Don’t know if it’s me, but Hershey Bars don’t seem to taste the same anymore. I used to love to break off each section and let it melt in my mouth. Bought full-size Hershey Bars to hand out for Halloween. Tasted one of the leftovers and it seemed to taste like that inexpensive Palmer brand, or Brach chocolate. Just not good.

Sorry about your Jets. Those fake Bronco injuries were very annoying.

  89. December 1, 2008

    Paul One

In the Chocolate category I’ll take a “Clark Bar”.
In the International category: “Coffee Crisp” (Canada).
In the Non-Chocolate category its “PAY DAY” all the way.

  90. December 1, 2008

    David M Roberts

Outstanding concept! This is fun and informative at its best.

QOTD: The mighty and triangular(and imported)Toblerone. Gotta love a candy bar that is shaped like a triangle.

  91. December 1, 2008

    AndrewG

    Gary,
It seems like you’ve been having a lot more fun on the show recently, which makes it a joy to watch. Not to say you weren’t before, but the last couple weeks you’ve been rocking it!

Keep up the good work, and keep having fun

    QOTD; Whatchamicallit. Game over.

  93. December 1, 2008

    Richard Ritter

NO CONTEST!?!?! It has to be the SKOR Bar, an obscure little candy bar that has been my fav for years.

Just to vent: The second Denver score was pure robbery, I mean did you see Favre’s face when they called it a TD? I think that really took the wind out of his sails. And don’t even get me started on faking injuries, Shanahan should be called Shinanigan!!!

  94. December 1, 2008

    kaybee

    QoTd
This is a difficult question, since any candybar covered in chocolate is good. I’ve loved Lindt chocolate and Cadbury nuts and fruit, but also the smooth Dove bar! All the ones you mentioned, too, Hershey’s and Ghiradelli are my favorites also.

  95. December 1, 2008

    Gary,
This was one of my favorite shows ever. I noticed you picked wines from Italy & South America, but all your candy was from the US. Maybe you could do another chocolate show, & feature high end chocolates from around the world?
    QOTD:
If it’s American candy bars, Snickers, no contest.
Lindt is amazing, especially their Lindor Truffles.

I’ve been ashamed of liking this candy bar since high school because people around would bully me and say that it’s for old people (!)…

    BABY RUTH!!!!!!!

nothing like salty peanuts covered in chocolate!

  109. December 1, 2008

    Loops

QOTD – I have to stand up for my Canadian roots and declare the ‘Coffee Crisp’ to be the best candy bar of all time. It’s like a fat coffee flavored Kit Kat. Oh my gawd. Not the best chocolate I’ve ever had, but definitely the best ‘dime store’ candy bar.

I’m not much of a sweet tooth but ya gotta love the Almond Joy bars, never tried pairing it with wine though.
Can’t wait to try the Cantus Carmenere! There’s a pretty good one for about $10 called Castillero del Diablo that seems pretty available in So. CA, that’s the only one i’ve tried though…

  112. December 1, 2008

    david h.

Great show! I’m looking forward to checking some of these out.

QOTD: Not really a candy bar but I’m a big fan of Reese’s

    Carly L

This was probably one of my favorite shows that you’ve ever done. I can’t wait to try out some candy bar/wine pairings of my own!

QOTD: Karl’s is Snickers. Mine is probably Twix, but I also love Whatchamacallits when I can find them! And at Halloween, I enjoy Mallow Cups. You can’t find those usually.

First of all, I’m really jealous that you can eat all that candy and still stay thin! Yikes! Good show; but my favorite wines with chocolate are cabs. Try that some time.

QOTD: 3 Musketeers closely followed by Take 5. 3 Musketeers is nice and simple, which I enjoy. Nice job throwing it under the bus there, Gary. Least fav – Butterfinger. The peanut butter stuff always gets stuck in my teeth, very annoying.

So I’m thinking that you have never thought of doing this show until you woke up this morning and realized that you were extremely down about the JETS loss. You thought, I don’t want to do the Thunder Show today, I just want to sleep in. Then you thought about just eating chocolate and drinking your sorrows away which led to the pairing of two Comfort Foods, chocalate and alcohol. Brilliant I’ll do the Candy Bar/Wine show. =-)

    Just pickin’ GV! Great show!

    QOTD: 100 Grand

  122. December 1, 2008

    David T

Fascinating episode. QOTD: Reeses & nerds (but not together!). Being from Ohio, of course the Buckeye candy is very similar to the Reeses. I think the peanut butter aspect would make for an interesting wine pairing. Any suggestions? I also opened my first zork today! I liked it.

  123. December 2, 2008

    OSCAR FALCON LARA

QOTD: My favorite candy bar, favorite above all would be a lindt chocolate bar, followed close by by a Kinder chocolate stick ( or chocolate egg )

Super cool show. We always have chocolates, candied milk balls, nougat rolls and fruit jams when we serve wine, it just sits well.

  124. December 2, 2008

Gary – I also thought the Broncos were faking injuries, although with the number of real injuries they’ve had this season, who knows…
I just wish they could play all their games on the road now though, they seem to do much better away from Mile High (which is weird)

    QoTD: Reeses Peanut Butter Cups

    Hi Gary,

Coincidentally actually met Alberto Guadagnini (owner of Casalli di Bibianno) just last week in Costa Rica, he was down visiting, divides his time between Italy and Philadelphia, where he now lives part time.

I loved the Argante (scored it 92 blind) and you should check out the all cabernet (Ginesio) and their other sangiovese blend at low price is good (Casalone).

Sorry bout your Jets, we’re gonna catch you next week…

    QOTD: good ‘ol Snickers…

    Great Episode!
I totally get this show. I love dark chocolate with Cabs and milk chocolates with Pinot Noirs.
QOTD – My all time favorite is Chunky; I have never tried it with wine, but come to think of it the raisins in it would probably hit it out of the park!

Fantastic show, Sir. Excellent idea to pair with candy bars on the show!

QOTD: As a kid, Baby Ruth took the cake for me., then I actually liked Almond Joy (chocolate and nut combinations are my weakness).
But NOW I LOVE super dark chocolate bars, 70+% cacao, and if you toss in some chile I’m sold.

  141. December 2, 2008

    mattyb_58

Thanks GV! QOTD, I would have to say the 100 Grand as well. Rarely do I have one (Halloween fun size once a year maybe) but it has always been my favorite. Think the wife will go for me “cooking” tonight???

    QOTD: Almond Snickers

  143. December 2, 2008

I’m not that big on candy bars, but Reese’s Sticks are bomb. They have the wafers like a Kit Kat, but with Reese’s peanut butter and chocolate. Kinder Buenos are really good, too. They have hazelnut flavored chocolate in the middle. Like a Ferrer Rocher (all-time fave, but technically not a candy bar).

This show reminded me of an old George Carlin bit where he poses the eternal question: “What kind of wine goes with Cap’n Crunch? I often have a hard time selecting a wine early in the morning.”

Perhaps the great GV could do a breakfast cereal show in honor of the late, great GC. Would love to see you douse a bowl of Fruit Loops with a big, fruit bomb Shiraz and dig in. C’mon, Gary, it’d be great!

  144. December 2, 2008

    Knick

Gary great show today. Might have to try this one day.

QOTD: Favorite candy bar would be Twix, but my favorite candy are those sour straw things.

snickers, jets are still going to have 12 wins this year! won a free beer off of a pats fan at the bar the other night. That was a tasty beer.

  148. December 2, 2008

    zac weiss

Mott was bringing some serious thunder today! You should regularly tag-team on days where the jets lose, get some cameraman support!
QOTD: bounty (coconut filling), or even better, the one with almonds in it and dark chocolate you have in the us, I forget what it’s called.

  149. December 2, 2008

    zac weiss

oh oh oh! and qotd, watchamacallit and… damn, what’s that one with the pretzels inside… take 5! delicious. that other one was almond joy by the way (am about to spend an hour on this candybar website I just found…)

Gary the greatest wine for a candy bar or any chocolate is from MAS CAL DEMOURA – 2006 Feu Sacré it is made from 95% old grenache vines and I had the pleasure of tasting it at the SALON DES VIGNERONS INDEPENDANT in Paris this past week…. exceptional wine for chocolate!

They also have a great website/packaging/labels…etc (for a french vinyard)

    http://caldemoura.sps-demo.com/en/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=29&Itemid=39

They are even using youtube.com as a method of getting their wines out there.

those candy bars are good but what about white chocolate? i like butterfingers hersheys has good white chocolate too. that would be an intersting pair. but with what?

  153. December 2, 2008

    Orion S.

that’s a tough one, cause my favorite candy is not technically a bar: reese’s pb cup. if that doesn’t count, it’s a toss-up between 100 grand and snickers.

  154. December 2, 2008

    italianwinelover

Nice combos but what about the dark chocolate????

QOTD: Almond joy….hmmm now what would the coconut go with??

Sorry about your jets was looking forward to seeing you and Mott with the same length!

QOTD: I was all about the Reeses PB cups and Whatchamacallit bar when I was younger. I am still into the reeses but now my taste is more to the dark side. Dark chocolate with either sea salt or spicy peppers rock.

  166. December 2, 2008

    Scott EJ

Interesting show. I usually prefer a darker chocolate when pairing.

QOTD: Anything Versoge (sp). They have the funkiest choices: Bacon and curry, cinnamon and black pepper, etc, etc. These aren’t the exact the options, but you get the idea. I rarely, if ever, eat supermarket candy bars; they’re like McDonalds to me. Gimme a high cocoa, belgian milk chocolate or something really unusual any day.

  167. December 2, 2008

    Rob

GV – I know you’re a root beer fan so give this a shot –

Butterfingers + Root Beer = The Awesome.

    Today’s show was “sweet”
Wondering if the dolcetto was too young to be drinking.
I’m not drinking any o7 reds of any kind yet.

QOTD: Hersheys symphony milk chocolate. Best bang for the buck on the market.

    Gary!

Really a fun show! Looking forward to more interesting “food” / wine pairings. QOTD: In younger days, when my teeth were stronger, BIG HUNK bars. Probably would pull a few teeth out by the roots if I ate one of those now! These days I’m going with either the classic Twix or the new Take 5 candy bar.

  175. December 2, 2008

    Colin Bmore

QOTD: Anything Reeses. Especially the Fast Break. and Twix PB

The show was awesome. Going to go and find some of the Dolcetto.

Football is the best, but I bleed Purple and Black.

  176. December 2, 2008

QoTD – Ritter Sport White Choc. w/ Hazelnuts.

  178. December 2, 2008

    Kathy Hughes

Not a candy bar….but Sees boxed chocolates, the dark chocolate nut and chewy collection. Now, I know the wines that complement. All the best from Naples Kathy aka CHampagne Lady.

  179. December 2, 2008

    Jen boone

My favorite candy bar with wine is just a hersheys bar. I think it brings out the notes of my favorite cheap wine.LOL

The BIG question I have is…..

How the heck do you keep your teeth white after drinking a great red wine! I joke a lot about purple lips and teeth the morning after a fab wine night.

Just a dorky question cuz I refuse to adapt myself to white wine.YUCK!

  180. December 2, 2008

    Snickers! imagine the possabilites…….

  184. December 2, 2008

    MattUD

QOTD: Yes! 100 Grand is also my favorite candy bar and I think it is extremely underrated. This show was awesome, it was really fun to watch. I also liked the date idea, maybe keep stuff like that coming?

    QOTD: Butterfingers

  187. December 2, 2008

GV, with your cholesterol issues you have no business eating this many candy bars. Some good dark chocolate in a small amount OK but candy bars contain products that raise cholesterol levels considerably.

  188. December 2, 2008

    Sharon

As far as regular candy bars go, I guess I like Almond Joy. No, not Mounds. I must have the nuts in there for the textural appeal. Otherwise it’s too mushy.
GV – I’m sorry you had to go all the way to Denver to watch the Jets lose in the rain. That’s a bummer. You are a true fan.

  189. December 2, 2008

    nik lopez

LOL!!! Gary, at 8:01 that is pure comedy…I seriously kept rewinding it over and over and over and the more you watch it the more you’ll laugh! That was great..Great Show.

  190. December 2, 2008

    Jake D

I’ve always been partial to Mounds and Butter Fingers. Although more recently I’ve really been getting in to really dark chocolate.

  191. December 2, 2008

    Rick D

Ring me up for Snickers and then the new dark chocolate peanut M&Ms.

Are you picking up a choc and nut theme?

  192. December 2, 2008

Fav chocolate bar (Or should I say Candy Bar I lived the otherside of the pond) would be Snickers. Great show! Cheers. Jlo (UK)

QOTD: Cadbury Dairy Milk, baby…not the one you buy in the US stores, but the one you import from the UK. Creamy, chocolaty, waxless goodness.

  194. December 2, 2008

    the2urbs

    Love Carms…

I like to get Double Chocolate Malted milk balls with them, and a lot of other wines…

IF you can get the ones you buy at high end grocery stores in bulk, about the size of a golf ball… DO IT!

  195. December 2, 2008

    Ray Barnes

I was very surprised the Dolcetto was that strong. Sounds like the other three wines are excellent at their price points and well work getting. Pretty novel show.

    QOTD – None.

this episode inspired me to drink a Dolcetto tomorrow night. Giacomo Fennocio is the producer. Not as bone dry as the Sottimano.

QOTD: current favorite candy bar is the Heath Bar! Infact i’ll eat one now.

    Great show as always GV

  200. December 2, 2008

    my2cents

I have always liked the “HEATH” bar. So good they made ice cream out of it.

I’m drinking a Saint Jean Du Barroux, L’Oligocene 04. Some darker chocolate with almonds is working pretty well. But a almond joy would be nice.

Nice little show today. I hope Gary didn’t upset his tummy with all those combos.

What about doing desserts some time with a guest chef? Flourless chocolate tort and some late harvest zin or a port,…Yummm!

  201. December 3, 2008

    jr

Gary – Gary – Gary…!! makes sense since high tannins generally pair well with fats and proteins, BUT shouldn’t be encouraging your viewers to eat all those hydrogenated trans-fats… A good quality dark or milk chocolate-Yes… but not those health destroyers… take care…

  202. December 3, 2008

    Chrisfs

My favorite candy bar is something like a Scharffenberger dark chocolate bar.

  203. December 3, 2008

    Jim Stephens-Wine Dude

On a quick note, I was surprised there was no Brachetto D’Acqui in the tasting! With its low alcohol and magestic acidity, this raspberry ridden dessert gem would have ben the perfect complement to that Hershey’s milk chocolate. Try it out=)

QOTD: My mom is responsible for my recent addiction to the “Take 5″ candy bar, and it is killing me! I get off of work and head to the movie store, and that damn candy bar just grills me from the rack, begging to be paired with a (and I am not much of a CA Cabernet drinker) 2004 Trefethen Estate Cabernet Sauvignon…holy testicle Tuesday, Batman, it is incredible=)

    Salud!

    Jimbo

Mounds and almond joys. Sometimes you just feel like a nut, and sometimes you don’t.

  207. December 3, 2008

    Scottie P

Awesome show; a lot of fun! Condolences on the loss to Denver, but think of it a “re-focus” loss that will help for the playoffs!

QOTD: Snickers with Twix a close second.

  208. December 3, 2008

    pawncop

    Good show and interesting concept.

Recently tried Russell Stover Milk Chocolate with Peter Lehman 2005 Barossa Shiraz, pretty darn tasty.

QOTD – Probably Nestle’s Crunch bar.

Wine & Candy? I can tell you what doesn’t go…(Pistachio-rich) Turkish delight and a 2003 Douro red, trying it now and the wine needs something meaty, not sweetie! I’ll try some dark chocolate after the show!

QOTD – Snickers (although I still remember it as Marathon, before it became Americanised).

I do love the Three Musketeers–sorry Gary. So fluffy and tasty. The low fat is a plus.

Off the subject a bit: love cookies and cream ice cream with vino (can be just about anything red)

    Hey Gary,

I am a fan of WLTV and think it is very important to find new and interesting ways to make wine education fun. My contribution to wine education is to put together an event in Toronto, Canada to educate the Millennial Demographic about wine. When I watched your episode on candy bars, a lightbulb went off for an event theme.

Would you be able to give me a few other candybar wine match ups? Are there any candy bars that go with a white wine that you could recommend?

    Thanks,
    Sarah

Sorry gang, but I’m catching up so I’m late on the feedback.
QOTD: You know, the $100,000 candy bar was my absolute favorite as a child–probably tied with Snickers. However, I ate one this past Halloween, and it was waaaaaaaay too sweet for me. I guess I’m getting old because I now prefer Cacao Reserve 65% Dark Chocolate by Hershey. Go figure!

In college, wine and candy didn’t go well for me one night. Rough night. Snickers doesn’t work.
But I would love to try wine and Reece’s Peanut Butter cups.
