    Great show Gary.

QOTD: A few. I bought a bunch of Michele Rolland’s Ugly-Ass Bottle Series, partly because of the score, partly because of the show you did, partly because of the cost, and mostly because of the hideous bottle that I hope to look back on in 5 years and laugh with my buddies about as we drink delicious, over-the-top Bordeaux.

    Dr_Funkenstein

    top 10!

I spent my hard earned student loan dollars on a couple of 2005 Pontet Canets at $80 per bottle and a 2005 Leoville Barton at $120. I starved for a couple of weeks, but it was worth it.

Good work, Hoss. Great show. Makes me wish I could finish my Ph.D. so I could afford some of these wines.

    QOTD: Chateau Gazin Rocquencourt

Haven’t opened a bottle yet, but I’m sure it won’t disappoint for its price point.

I hope you will be tasting them again this week or early next week.

We went a little overboard on 05s. Clos Fortet, Larcis Ducasse, Malescot, Branon, La Fleur Morange, Fleur Cardinale, Lascombes, Lucia, Pierre de Lune, Clos les Lunelles, Duhart Milon, Quinault, Barde haut, L ‘Arrosee, Valrose, D aigulhe, Haut Bergey, Malartic, Domaine De L’A, Faugeres, La tour Carnet, Sociando Mallet, Clos Manou, Charmail, Joanin Becot, and Lafon Rochet, and then some mixed cases.

    Excellent show!

What is it about blind tastings that bring the humor out in GV? Funny as hell today.

Great show. I’ve enjoyed some very good sub-$20 2005 Bordeaux wines this year. I have a 2005 bottle of Chateau Pipeau St. Emilion Grand Cru that I am looking forward to opening when the time is right.

Awesome show Gary Vee! I must say I am a bit ashamed as I have not had a 2005 Bordeaux; however, I am new to wine so I am still exploring what I enjoy and whats out there. Love the show. Keep bringing the Thunder!

Leoville Barton, Leoville Las Cases, Pinchon Lalande, Pinchon Baron, Ducru Becallioux. all expensive but tasting them, I was blown away by every one of them. The Pape Clement that I did not buy was unbelievable and may be a 100 point wine.

you are right gary, some of these wines are not meant to be drunk now and a lot of the lower end 05 bordeaux that i have tasted are like drinking rocks. they are just so tight right now. they will bloom one day and we will be happy that we bought a boat load.

QOTD- where do i friggin start?
a few bottles of each – duhart milion, de fieuzal, la grange, beau – sejour becot, le secret du cardinal, chat. ripeau (st emilion) lots of haut medocs, …… a mag of la fleur de gay, single bottles of la gurgue, la garde, rochet lafon, chat gloria, rauzzan gassies, found a bottle of malscott st exupery in bern for 80 bucks! moulin riche (2nd wine of poyferre) i cannot remember. that is just bordeaux. i sent all of my extra cash 05 last year…. burgundy, rhone….. loire.
**** my wife just found my hidden stash of wines the other day……yikes!

I’m trying to wrap my head around Bordeaux and with ‘05 being such a hot vintage, I figured if I’m gonna invest and break my mold, now is the time to do it.

QOTD: I’ve got a bunch at home, but, ironically enough, I did just receive a shipment of some today here at work of….’05 Ch. LaCroix-Chantecaille, St. Emillion, Grand Cru. Not being a big baller, I’m trying to maximize my bucks by staying in the 20-30 range and hoping for the best, ie: I would hate myself for spending major coin on a region that hasn’t been too kind to me in the past. But, given the vintage, I will try to be as picky and smart as I can with my choices, vs. just buying everything because of the press.

  26. December 3, 2008

QOTD:7 OR 8 cases mostly mixed. Chateau Angelus (3) was my splurge. Branon, Valrose Alienor, Reignac, Chasse Spleen, Clarke Listrac, Haut Bergey,Haut Brisson, Sansonnet, Caronne Ste. Gemme, La Croix de Gay etc.

Gary, you are the BOMB! Epic episode.

I love these blind-tasting shows. I must say, you have an amazing quality/price ratio feeling…unless you’re cheating :)
    Keep up the good work.

    Fun show, love Bordeaux!

Q – Have bought a number of different wines from that vintage, have a Chateau La Grave that’s been calling my name. I know it needs more time, but I HATE waiting!!

QOTD: Pichon Baron, La Gay, Sansonnet, Haut Bergey, Valrose CA, Beychevelle, D’Armailhac, Faizeau, Caronne Ste. Gemme, Reignac, Montviel, Senejac, Petit Bocq, Chateau Cote de Baleau & La Cour D’Argent…………….

  34. December 3, 2008

    Toby (DK)

Hey – thanks for yet a super show.

    Q.O.T.D.:
A few different 05’s, e.g.: a case of Cht. Cantenac Brown (3′cru) and a case of Cht. Belgrave (5′cru).
WISH I had gotten more (do still buy though), but the prices (as all know) do get a bit steep for a CKC :-)

Im trying to seek out some great offers for 04′ Bordeaux instead – e.g. in DK a bottle of 04′ Cht. Cheval Blanc only costs one tenth of a bottle of 05′ – and the 04′ is amazing!!! :-)

(Still hoping for more champagne and port shows – please ;-) )

  35. December 3, 2008

    manonthemoon

    Love the blinds.

QOTD: None, just can’t get into Bordeaux, tend to stick to the Rhone when it comes to red french wine.

  36. December 3, 2008

    JudeMurphy

I’ve bought… lots of 05 Bordeaux! All of which I immediately drank!

Yesterday I tried the 05 Ch. Barrail Du Blanc, and all I can say is you HAVE to try it!!! ; )

    Gary,

Kudos to the blind tasting………love this type of show. I haven’t commented in a long while, but this show was the tops.

QOTD: I have some O5’s – Chateau Picampeau, Chateau Moulin de Lavaud, and some others…..nothing too high priced. I’m interested in looking for the La Clemence though.

  38. December 3, 2008

    Gobi

QOTD – Ch. Margaux, Angelus, Leoville Poyferre, Rauzan Segla

  39. December 3, 2008

    amgryger

QOTD: I put together a modest mixed case of Ch. Haut Brisson, Ch. Pontac Lynch Quintessence, Ch. Valrose Alienoor, and Ch. Fieuzal Rouge.

  40. December 3, 2008

    Rick D

Great show Gary. Very impressed how you hit the prices on each bottle.

QOTD: I have purchased several 2005 Bordeaux, but don’t plan on drinking any until at least 2010. Chat Sansonnet, Chat Haut Brisson, Chat Beaumont, Chat Quinault L’Enclos, Chat Clarke, Listrac, Chat Potensac and a few other

My cellar leans way heavier to the southern Rhone for my palate. The out number Bordeaux 5:1

  41. December 3, 2008

    John R

QOTD: I got and am buying more, Calon Segur,Pofyerre,Duhart, Haut Bages Liberal.

  42. December 3, 2008

    Careyd

Hey Gary! Now you’re ringing my bell with the Bordeaux!

    2005 Bordeaux I bought:
    Château Au Grand Paris Supérieur
Baron Philippe de Rothschild Mouton Cadet
    Château Bel-Air (6)
    Domaine du Bouscat (4)
    Château Filhot
    Château Marjosse (4)
    Christian Moueix Merlot Bordeaux Contrôlée
    Château Poitevin (2)
    Château Sansonnet (case)
    Château Tertre de Courban (case)
Vallee de Valeur Mis en Bouteille par EMB 33100 A a Cars France
Château Valrose St. Estèphe Cuvée Alienor (case+++)

I’m still buying, but as you can see, most of what I bought is under $50. And over half is under $25. I’m big on Bordeaux, but just can’t afford to jump in too hardcore with the spendy stuff. I just do the best I can on a budget.

  43. December 3, 2008

    Jay Campbell

QOTD: I’ve only bought a couple. I drank one that was not good at all (Medoc) and had one from Poulliac (sp?) that was really nice, so I got another to hold onto for a while.

  44. December 3, 2008

    KW

Great Show! Gary why don’t you use more glasses so you don’t have to waste so much wine rinsing? Also what do you do with the wine that’s left over?

QOTD: Lots of stuff – Sansonnet, Haut Bergey, Valrose, Faizeau, St Gemme, Tour Seran, Rollan de By, Reignac, Fleur du Bouard, Picampeau, Cour D’argeant, Villars, De Courban

  45. December 3, 2008

    KJlost

QOTD: Just a Pipeau, Bel-Air Ortet, and Chasse-Spleen bought on a whim so far. I hoping reduction in prices will come around.

Gary Great episode….I wish i could afford that last one.

  51. December 3, 2008

    Toni

QOTD: Clos Moulin Pontet, Chateau L’Escarjean, Chantet Blanet, Mouton Cadet reserve, st emillion, Chateau Roques Mauriac, and a couple others.
This was my first venture away from local wines of Slovenia, Hungary and Austria, which I adore. They are cheap ass booze by any standards, but some of them showed me the capabilities of bordeaux area. I have to note Clos Moulin Pontet. This stands above the crowd enormously. It beats anything below 30 eur easily for the price of 5 eur.

This year I am aimig to more well known chateaus and expanding not only pallete, but also the wallette ;)

  52. December 3, 2008

    Peter

I have not purchased a Bordeaux for many years. I have the 1990, 1986, 1988, 1989. They are still not ready. So drink some great old Claret and have a party

  53. December 3, 2008

    Matt182

Excellent show, really high on blind!

QOTD: Clarke, Puygueraud, Malmaison, Bellefont-Belcier, Lagrange, Tourelles de Longueville, Réserve de Léoville Barton, Clerc-Milon in 1,5L and Trotanoy.

Looking for a La Clémence but in Canada (espacially in Quebec) but it’s 164$CAN (130$US) and maybe for a Cos d’Estournel.

  54. December 3, 2008

    Dominus

“Cheap cow-butt action” ahhhhh RP never used those kind of terms to describe wine. The reason the Vayniac Nation loves you.

Great, great show. These blind tastings are da best and it really shows how damn good you are.

QOTD: Yes, the ‘05 Reignac, one of the original “gargistas.” I fell in love with the ‘00 and based on your opinion (I have yet to taste it) I procurred a couple cases. Looking forward to their arrival some day.

    Cheers!

P.S. The Monteflores Merlot you reviewed the other night . . . kick-ass! Having some now.

Gary: Loved this Wine Library episode on the French Bordeaux and the one on Getting Rich Slowly. I have read the Wine Advocate and Wine Spectator Magazine avidly and have spent a great deal of money over the last 15+ years on their recommendations. Well, now that I’m broke, I can only say how much I enjoyed the two film clips I viewed today. You are “spot on” regarding less expensive wines vrs. the real high end stuff. Wish I had known about this years ago. It would have saved me a great deal of money. I plan to watch your “blog” more regulary now. Thanks, Pete

  56. December 3, 2008

    RonC

Excellent episode. I really enjoy the blind tastings.

QOTD: Purchased some inexpensive 2005’s. Don’t have a wine cellar so I have no idea what they will taste like in a few years.
    Chateau Picampeau
    Chateau Vieux Pourret
    Domaine Du Bouscat
Roc De Pourret St Emilion (2)
Chateau Gigault Cuvee Viva Premieres Cotes de Blaye (2)

    and many, many more!!

  62. December 3, 2008

    Jay

QOTD: Several, but among those I’m most looking forward to trying (many years from now…) is the Clerc Milon, long my favorite “value” Bordeaux property.

  63. December 3, 2008

great show. You know, one of Hercules’ tasks was to shovel animal crap. That’s some good company.

  64. December 3, 2008

    sam

    Rockin’!
I only really got into Bordelais wines with the ‘05 vintage. In my short voyage through the immense world of Bordeaux, I have found that many are too big to drink right now, and really get the most of as of yet. Most wines would benefit having a couple more years to settle.

QOTD: My 2005 coup de coeur is Château Maucamps, a Cru Bourgeois Supérieure from the Haut-Médoc. Big berries, ripe, but with a strong backbone that will take it through the next 2-3 decades.

To 2005 Bordeaux, raise your glasses!

  65. December 3, 2008

    BF

QOTD: I bought cases of CH. Puygueraud, Ch. Belgrave, Ch. Caronne Ste Gemme, and Ch. Labat. All under $25 a bottle… the ones I’ve tried are WAY too young to drink now, though.

  66. December 3, 2008

    Carly L

QOTD: I think I bought a 2005 Bordeaux last year for about $12. I can’t remember, but I think it was pretty good. Too poor to have tried any of the really good ones, I guess :(

Great show, GV. Blind is the way to go; I don’t even scroll down to see the wine list, so that I can be surprised, too. You’re really hitting the price points on the nose. Just a liitle too good maybe ;-) I’ve been waiting for a 2005 Bordeaux show. Was hoping that you’d have the chance to give the little beauties a little more air time before tasting, though.

Great show Gary, I’ll save up for the La Clemence. I’ve been enjoying the 2005 Ch. La Grange Clinet, pretty tasty, only about $14, which is about what I like to spend.

  71. December 3, 2008

Love the blinds – like a box of chocolates ya neva know what ya gonna git.

    OSCAR FALCON LARA

    QOTD: I bought several 2005’s :
    Chateau du Plantier 2005 Bordeaux
    Chateau Cluzan 2005 Bordeaux
    Sichel Sauternes 2005.
    Chateau Le Giron 2005 Bordeaux

I am curious about that ‘poop’ smelling wine, I will look for it locally…

    Great show.

  76. December 3, 2008

    hugh

QOTD-I’ve bought about 12-14 different ones from price range of 20-80.
Especially looking forward to trying Monbousquet (btw if u can get the 2000-do it!!) and Lascombes….

  77. December 3, 2008

    NJ_Vettester

QOTD: I have not yet purchased any of the 2005 Bordeaux – economic climate has forced me to give up on most luxury items like wine.

  78. December 3, 2008

    Ray Barnes

As usual Gary does a very fine job in blind tastings – where his palette is pushed a bit harder than usual. The La Clemence sounds like a winner too, and at $80 is not bad at all for a great wine from there.

QOTD – Chateaux Bahans-Haut-Brion, Nenin & Guiraud. Also a very nice surprise, Ch. Pezac from Entre-Deux-Mers, a good sleeper.

  79. December 3, 2008

    ncwinetravels

    gary,

great show…love the bordeaux. QOTD: Chateau Grand Jean 2005 – right bank.
Haven’t opened it yet, might be a dog, we’ll see.
Still waiting for Chateau Gazin to be in stock.

    Best Regards,
    ncwt

  80. December 3, 2008

    Stan Reitan

I have not had the privelege of tasting a ton of ‘05 Bordeaux but I did stumble on a very nice gem for only $15.00. Chareau Paradis Casseuil Domaines Barons DE Rothschild (Lafite). What an amazing wine for the price. Dusty fruit on the nose with wet leather, some dark cherry currant maybe. Wet leather and fruit on palate, finish wasn’t great but acceptable. Great wine for under twenty bucks if you love the old world style.

  81. December 3, 2008

    Tooch

keep the blind tastings coming – i think a couple double-blind episodes are necessary too.

2005 bordeaux – haven’t bought anything noteworthy yet.

Nice show.. need to find some La Clemence…

All that I have bought of 2005 is a case of Chateau La Pointe from Pomerol… got an early 90s vintage on a whim from Trader Joe’s years ago and loved it… My wife and I visited the Chateau on our trip to France in 2001… nice small production, family owned… and like you say.. LOVE THE MERLOT!

I am a newcomer to wines and to The Thunder Show and it is absolutely fantastic. I am addicted to these episodes and have watched tons in the last 5 days. Love the blind tasting. I have not yet purchased any Bordeaux, but I plan to very soon.

Keep up the great work and I will do what I can to spread the Thunder.

    Many thanks for your insights.

loved the show, as usual, love right bank and Cab Fr. so getting a case of this, ONLY based on this show!!!! hope I’m doing the right thing, I trust your palate as it is so similiar to mine.

QOTD: Cos D’Estournel, always undervalued, in my humble opinion. Also La Mission Haut Brion, and bought a whole bunch of second wines from the top names, which I think is a great play.

    Salud!

Really enjoy the blind tasting shows.

I got caught up a bit on the 05 Bordeaux thing this year.
I feel any wine collection has to have a couple of classed growths from this
vintage so I blew a whole two week paycheck just to get the Palmer and Ducru-Beaucaillou.

Almost forgot. Great job on the CBS Early Show. Too short a segment. Maybe they’ll wise up and give you more time on your next appearance. Harry seemed to enjoy himself. QOTD- 05 Cos D’Estournal. Had it at a tasting and had to buy it, I remembered this wine from your vid and your book. Truly out of this world. I’m sure this wine will only get better with time and a wine to have for that very special moment.

    Hehe, really enjoy this!

Just came back from the 2005 Bordeaux tasting at last week. Saint-Julien wines obviously won my heart, especially, Ch. Leoville Poyferre, Ch. Lagrange and Ch. Talbot, much better than other Bordeaux red wines. Right time to taste. Graves and Sauternes also rocked.

QOTD: I bought some basic 2005 Bordeaux last year. Amongst, Chateau Grand Ferrand from Entre-Deux-Mers was a sexy and delicate wine, 100% Merlot, and the winner out of a box of six.

Great episode, blind tasting is like lottery. hehe, love it!@

QOTD – I am not a big fan of Bordeaux, but I did drink an ‘05 at a friend’s house about a month ago, and I do remember telling my wife that the wine tasted like poop, Not exactly in those terms, but there is something about them that turn me off.

Keep the blinds coming, or maybe do a blend comparison show, like super Tuscans, Meritages, and some of the Spanish blends that I love so much.

I missed you in the Early Show, see if you can add the video to the national appearances column.

Great show. Since I am still new to Bordeaux wines, I tried to select a wine from each major appellation. Thought this would be a great opportunity to get to know the different styles of each appellation and to see what I prefer. Most are $15-30 wines, most are cru bourgeois. I rather bought more bottles instead of buying the top stuff. Here is a selection:

    Chateau Beaumont
    Chateau d’Aurilhac
    Chateau La Gurgue
    Chateau Duhart-Milon
    Chateau Couhins (red and white)
    Chateau Gloria
    Chateau Tailhas

    Hey Gary,
I LOVE ‘05 Bordeaux. I can’t wait to see how it does in the next 5 years or so. I bought a few Château La Tour de Mons, already had one and it was pretty good. Can’t imagine how better it will get. If you had this wine, I’d love to hear your comments.

Thanks for another great episode. I am impressed by your ability to predict the prices of the wines.
qotd: I haven’t bought much, but I did really enjoy the ‘05 Chateau Carbonnieux (sp?) Blanc. I don’t have a lot of experience with white Bordeaux, but this is probably the best I have had. I am saddened by the fact that here in Maine it is being sold for about $55. The suggested retail is actually $35, which is about the price I paid in New Hampshire several months ago. I won’t name names, but I suspect that the Maine distributor who carries it bought it at retail in New Hampshire and is reselling it at their usual markup. jerks.

Great show. I am a lurker no more. I managed to find wine-library tv all by myself, but ahve since recommended it to all of my friends – wine lovers or not. I live in London, and am minutes away from stuffy wine-shops. It is so refreshing to find someone as passionate as you!

I think that everyone should just take a holiday, and drive to a wine region and meet these wonderful wine producers. I still love the first time I went to bordeaux and rocked up at this old house, and this old man showed me and a friend around his vinyard. He didn’t speak a word of english, and we didn’t speak any french, but we understood each other perfectly.

This is what wine is all about. Fact

Eric thinks there is not much to it, I think it’s juicy with lots of fruit and maybe some leather? I don’t really know what I’m talking about though, but I think it’s a nice medium quality wine. QOTD I slightly missed the boat on 2000 Bdx and should have bought more futures of the 1995 vintage (altough in my defense I was at that time working part time at Wendy’s…) so this time around I went heavier than normal even if primeur prices where high. I ended up with some Brillette, Chasse-Spleen, Sociando-Mallet, Pontet-Canet, Malescot St-Exupery, Haut-Bailly, Haut-Brion, La Conseillante, La Fleur-Petrus, Malartic-Lagraviere, Bahans Haut-Brion, Chapelle d’Ausone, Pensees de Lafleur, Clos du Marquis and Climens.

The boat is full (wallet empty) and the mix is interesting which should cover anything from casual dinner to very special occasion type wine (especially the magnums!).

I got a case of a 3rd growth margaux Ferriere that Decanter magazine gave 5 stars to, it is normally not very good but I guess it was a good vintage for margaux.
Also 2 bottles lanesson, 2 alter ego de palmer,1x leoville barton,1x haut bages liberal,1 bahans haut brion.
Have just drunk 2 half bottles of carmes de rieussec 05 and these 2nd wines of great Sauternes houses seem to be good value for early drinking.
Overall i think the wines are grotesquely overpriced eg $NZ150 for leoville barton .

hahahahaah “why dont you give 05 bordeaux tongue cuz you love them so much” hahahha GV is a riot!

also–he is a GENIUS–BLIND 2005 bordeaux (a dream episode!)–this is still the hottest topic of the year and blind is the way to go–the best way to get rid of preconveived notions –i mean, thats how WS, WE, etc do all their tastings!

QOTD–i am excited about the 05 pontet canet i got–i will not dare touch it for at least 12 years!

What a sweet episode! This is what I live for. Alas, if I were not a CKC, I’d be buying a case (or two) or La Clémence!

QOTD: Due to my CKC status, I don’t have the means to buy lots of 2005s, although little by little I’m snatching what I see in local stores. I have:

Thanks for another fun show, Gary.

I purchased my first “future”/pre-arrival back in January at a UCG tasting in SF, and it just arrived this weekend! It’s a Margaux – Chateau de Tertre. Also bought a couple of inexpensive ’05’s…Haut Nadeau and Haut Belian.

    Hey Gary

    Good show, thanks

QOTD: none … impossible to buy any in Australia (import tax makes prices stupid) and i feel it’s way too over priced in Hong Kong, though i might get organised and grab a bit soon.

I am totally new to Bordeaux, I’ve bought 2 bottles and haven’t drunk them, from memory it was St Gemme Haut Medoc?

it would be neat to see a double blind where the audience had to guess what you were tasting…..can enough detail be gleamed from tasting notes to give the audience an idea of what varietal/region the wine is? hmmmm……

everybody leaves a comment guessing the wines and the answers revealed the next day. yes….i like this idea….

QOTD…I have a small selection of Bordeaux wines. Most in the 7-15 euro ($10-$20) range. Most I haven’t tried yet. Many come from small European wine shops or right from the vineyards, so I’m not sure of the Stateside exposure.

Most are Bordeaux Superior and a couple Grand Cru quality. Some of them include Ch Haut Gay, Ch Timberlay, Ch Barrail Laussac and Ch La Fleur De Lescours.

I’m going blind! Love the blind tastings – so much drama. Looking for the La Clemence from Pomerol as we speak. (Google me this!)

QOTD ~ Have had a few, but the most recent at a tasting for work was the Christian Moueix 2005 Medoc ( I saw that Cork’d rated it 94 pts. I thought it was a terrific buy at $18 in our store. Lots of upfront dark fruit followed by firm tannins in the end – will buy some and hold a few years to see what develops! PS – tried the Christian Moueix 2005 St Emilion – it was far too acidic for me – needs more time in the bottle.

  184. January 29, 2009

    Bothuyne Carl

Well, I have from 2005; Cos d’Estournel, Ducru Beaucaillou, Vieux Chateau Certan and the red Pape Clement. These are all great wine but I personally prefer the great Bordeaux wines from the year 2003. Of course, the 2005s have often more acidity than the 2003s. But I prefer, for my palate, pure knockout wines!

    Dessert Wine Nerd

Great episode, glad you finally got around to a blind tasting. Im excited for the future ( the ones I own ). I hope all the money you forced me to spend didnt go to waste! QOTD: 2 Cos d’ Estrounel, a Monbousquet, a D’ Issan, a Figeac, and a Reignac. More to come, too! Costco has some huge deals. I get lots of bottles from them that are like 30% cheaper than wine stores. So basically a $300 wine for $200. I also have some nice 05 Sauternes as well.
