As a current resident of AZ, I say “Hell yeah”!!!!

As a longtime watcher of WLTV, I think the last 2 months have been some of the best episodes of all time. I loved the guests, starting with Tim Hanni and going strong with Jorge and George and now Maynard. Keep bringing the thunder, b/c it’s been going strong!!!

    QOTD: 666 km/hr ;)

Solid show, Maynard was really reserved and seemed down to earth.

    QOTD: What now?

  16. December 9, 2008

    Mike Diz

Best guest on WLTV ever. Cant belive you got to drink with Maynard!!!!

QOTD: No one knows the answer to this question as the troll was thrown off the bridge and King Arthur proceeded across without providing an answer to either the speed of the African or European swallow when unladden. If you really want to know, you will have to ask the swallow!

    European: 11m/s or 24mph

I have always considered Maynard and TOOL some of the most articulate & progressive rockers of their time and this just cements my opinion. Now that he’s been on your being, ex-Army as I am as well as he, Maynard can do know wrong in my eyes! Thanks for another great episode. Yes, perhaps one of your finest. Rock On, brother

  22. December 9, 2008

Not a huge Tool fan but you really have to respect Maynard not just going to into Napa and buying a winery to put 200$ Cab. I hope Arizona grows by leaps and bounds- the US really needs more wine areas that can create value wines.

Now why wasn’t the “real” winemaker in on the whole show? Eric and Tim would have been much more interesting than having Maynard be a bump on a log not really having anything to say.

Rockstar wine makers, YES. Rockstars, NO. I’m sure there are plenty of music blogs out there that might better benefit from having Maynard as a guest.

I’ve been to Jerome and they boast a one hundred mile view from the town’s perch. Awesome that they are using the land for more than growing dust clouds.
Now they have wine to add to list reasons to visit. Cool.

QOTD= Been there heard that. Better luck next time.(Gary, tell them ahead next time.)

I never heard of this dude Maynard, but I guess he’s something else; clearly he thinks he is. I liked Eric though. If I ever go to AZ I will try to find some of their wine, because Gary seemed impressed…

Gary, the look on your face said it all after tasting the last barrel sample. I think a better question was not WHEN they will bottle it, but IF they should!

Good effort G.V. I understand why you did it…Maynard has a following in the music biz for sure…Maynard dude….No one is all that. Your in biz to make new friends man. Leave the chip at the door or not I guess.

I know you will sell what you make….not a problem…send the wines my way and let me critique them.

Big ups to the Arizona crew at Caduceus!

I’m a huge Tool fan. It’s great to see Maynard expand his domain. He has influenced and changed the rock world, now we can see he can also alter the wine world. I’ll bee seeking the products mentioned.

Keep up the hard work. The whole community philosophy is a stepping stone to empowering people who work the land and who offer amazing products!

Awesome show. It’s ruckin’ fresh when people show they have multiple talents and interests and all. Some feel that movie actors only act or musicians only play music and it’s nice to see a real, tangible (drinkable) result from s awesome people in arenas outside of what they are best know for.

  43. December 9, 2008

    Dominus

Now this was an interesting show. I don’t know where to go from here but my thoughts in general are:

    1) Who is growing wine in AZ? I’ve been there numerous times and can barely keep cactus/saguaro growing.
    2) Ugly butt labels. The duct tape was a novel idea and better than the printed ones from Ep. 1
    3) The bald-headed guy (sorry, never heard of him prior to this show) was kinda pompous and not my style of guy. The curly-haired guy looked 15 but listening to him I was impressed. Kudos to him.
    4) Their website is impressive. Looks “Riven”-like. They should hire their webmaster to design their labels.

On a whole, interesting show and will seek out their winery the next time I’m in AZ. I have to taste for myself an 88pt Cab from AZ. Not that I doubt the swami. :)

    Cheers!

    Good stuff.

Curious spot at the beginning. Didn’t know you charged big coin (or whatever it was you said) to talk to people.

BTW – My tax greedy Governor who has no sense of free choice for his states citizens, crumbled to wholesalers and re-initiated prohibition in my state of IL was arrested today for myriad of reasons. Poetic justice at its finest!!

My family drove through Oak Creek Canyon, Verde Valley, Cottonwood and Jerome on a car trip across the country about 30 years ago. It was FASCINATING to me then as a kid, had an extremely natural spiritual vibe. I want to get back someday.

Maynard – why Caduceus? being a physician & surgeon i always figured if a got a tat it would be a caduceus but i don’t really dig snakes so i love the vines replacing reptiles. killer website BTW.

gonna ride down one day to visit Sedona again and now i’ll come to the tasting room too!

Wow, this was a great two parter! Really enjoyed myself- good info, fun facts, and some laughs. Most excellent. And the websites were fabulous. I’d love to get on some of those mailing lists.

Thanks for a classic! I love their sense of experimentation and love of the process. They are a real life example of your mantra, Gary: love your family, trust your palate, try new things, change the wine world.

  53. December 9, 2008

QOTD: I’m sure someone’s said it, but European or American?

Good, good show. I’ve been a King Crimson fan since forever so I’ve come to enjoy Tool as well, all interesting stuff. Thanks again.

    Ray Barnes

That first wine sounded excellent. I share comments elsewhere that the video quality was not up to the usual standard.

QOTD – The only people who can make Python jokes and quips funny are the original cast – timing and delivery count for everything. Since John Cleese is a serious wine lover I hope a video blog is done with him someday. I will not answer the question since it came off as a damp squib.

  59. December 9, 2008

    Matt R

I was going to make (yet another) wise Python crack then go into superfan mode. Then I went to the web site (caduceus.org) and something clicked.

To me, there are two types of wines. There are the commercial efforts — the old standbys, of which everybody has their favorites. They’re good, dependable, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with them. Then there are the personal efforts — the small, intimate wines of with a story. They’re a bottle of someone’s hopes, dreams, and passions.

I read the mission and quotes, and hit the words “acquired taste,” and I’m sold. Then I started reading the journal — fascinating stuff.

For those who aren’t familiar, I see a lot of parallels to Maynard’s music. I had the honor of attending a Tool concert a couple years back. 2+ hours of solid music, Maynard stood in the back of the stage, next to the drummer, never stepped into the spotlight, and was only visible in silhouette.

Maynard’s music, in all it’s forms, are a lot of things, but “accessible” is not on the list. It takes time, patience, and a bit of faith to appreciate it. It’s an experience of learning something about music, and about yourself. That’s a lot more than most groups can ask of their fans.

That night, there were 1?,000 people in the audience, and they were all there for a reason — that’s just not the concert you go to on a whim. The lack of a bombastic stage presence of the lead singer was more than replaced by the energy of all the fans. It’s truly an experience without parallel.

I can’t speak to the quality of the wine (yet, but that’s on my to-do list in the very near future,) but reading the journal, it’s clear that same passion is present in a BIG way in this new venture.

The talk of price was a distraction. I didn’t appreciate wine until I met a winemaker up in the North Georgia Mountains and got the grand tour of his facility. The objective quality of his wines might not stack up against the finest of the commercial bottles, but the honor of sharing a glass with someone for whom this wine was a piece of themselves certainly can’t be measured on a 0-100 scale, and can’t be priced in dollars and cents.

Kudos, Gary, on an excellent episode, and thanks for bringing this to us.

As for this show…I’m so very glad to see that Eric Glomski and Maynard were finally able to get a little facetime with the Vayniacs. I’ve been fortunate enough to taste the first two vintages of the Primer Paso, Naga, and the first vintage of the Sensei. These wines really have great potential…and are fun to enjoy as a fan of wine and Music. The limitations not allowing them to ship to my state has made getting these wines quite expensive…which is hard on a college budget. I’m really looking forward to the future of AZ wines…and hope to find myself working closer to the west coast after completion of my Master’s….

  65. December 10, 2008

    Paul B

Matt R actually hit the nail on the head. I had taken the time to visit the vineyards when I lived in Arizona because I was a Tool and wine fan. What I came back with was a separation of fandom and product appreciation. I am a wine enthusiast and was very impressed with the wines coming out of Stronghold and Page Springs (Caduceus). This was a great show which I enjoyed every minute of. If I was in Maynard’s position (and this is coming from a hard core Tool fan), I would make one more album and enjoy my retirement doing one of the greatest things on earth, making wine! Love it.

good show but i must say as a rock star Maynard is a dick. i saw Tool a few years ago in Toronto only because Tomahawk (one of mike pattons bands you know the former lead singer of faith no more oh by the way get Peeping Tom if you dont have it) opened for them. after the show we hung around to see if we could get some pics of him and the band. The band was cool signed some stuff and took pics all the while maynard had his body guard escort him on the bus while covering his head so no body could take his pic. what an ass he is!!!

  78. December 10, 2008

    damon aka unknownwine

Some of those wine were $100 bucks. Anyone out ther who has tasted them feel that anywhere near worth that? Just curious. Gary kept saying value play for $30 wines. Interesting. He usually hammers the other 46 for charging too much for thier product. The Caduceus bottles look really cool, though.

  79. December 10, 2008

Killer idea for a show. Been a Tool fan since Opiate and was aware Maynard was into wine making, but didn’t really know anything about Caduceus. Really enjoyed watching you get into the wines with Maynard & Eric.

I have to say, its cool that Maynard didn’t do what some rockstars and rappers do and throw a bunch of cash at an established vineyard just to slap their names on a bottle and sell it for $100 a pop. He’s actually getting dirt under his nails and learning the winemaking process himself, which shows he’s doing it because he enjoys it and he’s curious. Much luck to him and Eric!

    Thanks for taping!

    damon aka unknownwine,

I’ve had all of his initial 2004 releases and three of the four (haven’t had the Sensei yet)from 2005. Here is what I’ll say. I was heartbroken when i tasted the 2005’s. His production level went WAY up from 2004 to 2005. The best example is the Primer Paso. I drank my last bottle on 9/11 this year and it was glorious. Below is a link to my review at Cellar Tracker. I hope this helps…Cheers

Sound quality was tough to understand some of what was said. Intersting episode. The “new” grape varietal was very intersting.

Iv bin to pagesprings a few times but only because of tool apc and puscifer. I did buy the 04 sensei witch I thought was way overpriced but would make a grate collectors item even tho I would never sell it.
Now the wine I did drink. i had two bottols of the 05 Chupacabra one of the 05 Naga and one of the 05 Sensei.sorry to say I injoyed the Chupacabra over the other more expencive wines but then I wouldent even concider my self a noveswin drinker. Nor would I call my self a educate’d man but thay were all drank in grate company. I think that means more then the coast or the ranking of the wine.

Great show Gary. I had heard from you that some interesting wines were coming out of Arizona, but when I visited Sedona a month ago, I was very surprised that every restaurant I visited did not offer a single Arizonian wine on their menu. I’ll definitely seek out a winery on my next visit.

A great show. I am happy to see Arizona wines being represented on the national level. I was born and raised in Prescott, AZ and I now live and make wine in Oregon. Every time I go back home I try to taste around as much as I can. I have had many wines from Page Spring Cellars and some of the Merkin and Caduceus wines as well. The Malvasia is great! A word of advise for the people of AZ, stop building golf courses and start planting (more) vines!!

    cheers,
    Heath

Gary, lay off the coke/coffee/whatever you are on. If you are not on anything, maybe try some relaxation techniques before interviews.
It was PAINFUL to try to watch Maynard and Eric try to speak and get cut off and shouted over the majority of the time.
You are at a level 9.5… we need you at about a 3. Mkay?

Interesting show …. not sure what else to say. Interesting to read the pro & con Maynard comments. I dont have a strong feeling either way, but it was interesting to see that many of the posters did. I am waaaaay late watching this. Was out traveling when episode was released – only found out about it now when my son who is a much bigger Tool fan than I caught wind of it. I do like the idea of guests on the show – they are almost always the best shows.

Maynard & Eric – best of luck on your project – what is clear to me is your heart is in it !

Possibly my favorite show! I, along with my band (click my name to check us out if you like Tool), worship on the altar of Tool!!!!! I have been trying to get a hold of some Caduceus wine, but it is apparently illegal to have it shipped to NJ :( . Can’t wait to see how Maynard and Eric do in bringing quality Arizona wines to the public’s attention.

QOTD – What? I don’t know that! AHHHHHHH

Just so happened that I was going to be in Phoenix for New Years. Upon seeing this show I implored by buddies that we take a trip up to McCain-ville and visit Page Springs cellars. Unfortunately they weren’t tasting any Caduceus and only one Merkin, but many of the Page Springs were decent efforts and one AZ Stronghold chard really caught my attention.

Came home with a Caduceus Primer Paso that I look forward to opening and an Page Springs Gevurz that I was really pleased with.

Go visit the vineyard- very nice people and a gorgeous drive to get there.

we visited this winery last week on the way back to Phoenix from Sedona. We chose it at random from the three that my friend had on a list. We somehow missed watching these two eps on Page Springs–I wonder how it would have influenced our visit. We didn’t realize that Gary had been there until we saw a newspaper cutout on the bulletin board next to the bathroom.

Anyway, we didn’t have the same fantastic visit that Gary appeared to have. The tastings were fairly expensive–$10 a flight for a not very generous pour, administered by a not very enthusiastic employee. So, we didn’t risk an additional $10 to try the whites, which sounded intriguing but are not our preferred drink.

The reds we tasted weren’t bad–of course, I’m assuming that most of what we were tasting was from California grapes. The employee wasn’t very informative, but she told us the grapes were both Arizona and California, wouldn’t go into much detail. The prices were very high. Maybe the whites were $20, but all of the reds were $27 – $29.

We were going to get another glass of our favorite and sit out on the balcony to enjoy it–and maybe contemplate buying a bottle (overpriced, but we were willing to buy a bottle and support them). However, if we bought a glass of wine (overpriced), they would serve it in the same tasting glass. I don’t even like tasting wine in one of those tiny glasses. They had some decent sized glasses, but they were only for “members.”

    No thanks.

On the show, you tasted a wine that was for “members” only.

Well, I guess if we lived in Phoenix, and Page Springs was our best option, we might be members. And we might be able to taste something interesting in a decent sized glass. But meanwhile, we’ll just have to go back to drinking our $8 to $20 wines from all over the world that we buy at Wine Library.

It was an interesting experience visiting Page Springs, but watching the ep, we don’t see how you could have been visiting the same place.

Fantastic show. Pretty damn cool to see Maynard to a 180 and basically want to do nothing but wine. Same goes for Eric, too. I wish we could get their wines here ( maybe? ), and I wish them success now and in the future. QOTD: King Arthur: What, African or European? Keeper of the Bridge of Death: I dont know that….wahhhhHHHH!!!!!!! ( I could do that all day )

I’m a Chicago transplant in Tucson, Arizona and I appreciate the work these small wineries are doing here in AZ – one of the few things going right in this state.

I’m glad during this second half here Maynard woke up and finished being nervous… Kind of strange to see a guy who performs in front of ginormous crowds struggle to hold his composure in the first half.

I think, however, Vay-ner-chuk’s personality would overshadow many peoples’ – even rock stars.

    Best,

Loved watching these two episodes. I was able to get signed bottles from Maynard and Eric, at the Denver Whole Foods signing. The Malvasia was probably my favorite, but because I like reds more than whites, I only puchased one bottle. My loss I guess. I do have one question, though, to Maynard’s question…What is the air-speed velocity of an unladen swallow?

“What do you mean? An African or European swallow?”

    Well,
Having read most of the comments above. I’m trying to determine my feelings on the show. ( 1 and 2 ). I’ll start by saying i liked the insight of Eric and Maynards ideas of the wines presented. I am interested in trying a few of the food wines. I to love food. Having said that, Eric!, you are very knowledgeable when it comes to the chemistry of all aspects of wine conjuring. So your words were what i paid more attention to. ummm to cut it short. i liked the interview but the lack of info due to the host having ALOT to say. oh and Eric sorry for the tripple post on the AZ stronghold ( on the road blog ).

Steve, you have never heard of Maynard (not surprising) He isn’t arrogant, you douche, just because someone is quite and confidant doesn’t mean they are arrogant. You’ll come to find that people will listen harder and are more focused on someone who whispers and not on someone who yells.

Another example of the greatest artist on the planet and the majority of western world don’t even know him but they sure know Brittney Spears. Why do you think that is…..because she is talented?!?! I could say more but only about 1/3 of people will get it. So I’ll leave but saying I think that’s fantastic that you made a wine in honor of you mother, and I live in Canada but I really want to buy a few bottles and plan on making a trip to fly out to see your winery congratulations and best of luck in your futures. Cheers Jim W

Very cool episodes with Maynard & Eric! I am a huge Tool and Maynard James Keenan fan and it is great to see this side of him :) It is terrific he and Eric are bringing Arizona wines to the public. They are obviously very passionate about the wines, and Eric seems very knowledgeable on all aspects of winemaking.
I definitely am interested in trying some, especially the reds.
Maynard & Eric-best of luck to you guys in your winemaking venture!
