Sorry about your loss – my dad used to have season tix to the Jets (back in the days when Bridgette Nelson was married to Mark Gastineau).

On the flip side – thanks for the review of the ice wines. Had an opportunity to try one from somewhere in Europe a couple years back and really loved it. Didn’t realize there were Washington ice wines. Very cool!

I’ve had ice wines, and liked them, but for the prices, I’d rather Bonny doone still did their ‘icebox’ wine!

    #600. . . . clip show???

In case anyone is interested in how icewine is made…there was a good (albeit a bit of a fluff) piece on icewine recently: http://www.cbc.ca/video/popup_nlp.html?http://www.cbc.ca/mrl3/8752/news/features/allen-icewine-081220.wmv

Gary: if you ever have a chance, you need to get your hands on some icewines from Nova Scotia (particularly from the Annapolis Valley). It is a lot smaller of a producing wine region than Niagara or the Okanagan – but being a lot cooler climate means the icewines have off the charts acidity, giving a much more balanced wine.

QOTD: 2007 Gaspereau Vineyards Vidal Ortega Icewine from the Annapolis Valley in Nova Scotia.

I just called the winery and the girl that answered had no idea what I was talking about. I must have been one of the first to call. I wished her a happy holiday from all the Vayniacs and wine Library TV.

    Fun stuff.

Oh and yea Ice Wine rocks. Inniskillin Vidal is my favorite.

QOTD1: Ice wine? I’ve had several dessert wines but the only ice wine I had was in a little tasting cup at a department store. Tasty but hard to really grasp when only having a teaspoon full.

QOTD: Those budget sparklers you mentioned you’d taste during your snowstorm champagne show.

Don’t be sad… it’s not over for the Je… ok, I’ll stop there. Don’t want you to pull the plug on the Thundershow out of anger ;-)

The two best ice wines I had were both from British Columbia’s Okanagan valley: Inniskillin’s 2006 Riesling Icewine and the 2004 Nk’Mip Qwam Qwmt Riesling Icewine. Both were amazing wines.

  37. December 22, 2008

QOTD: Never had one, so thanks for the show, I might try the Kiona shortly.

QOTD II: Great wines to give as gifts?

Never had Ice wines, are there sparkling ice wines? They sound fun.

Since I like Cavas and Moscatos so I’m gonna say tomorrows show is on… cava and/or Moscato? Hey its gonna be new years- its all about the bubbly baby! :)

And don’t worry Gary – look on the bright side- you could be a Detroit fan!!!

PS. I have only been watching for a couple of weeks, I went thru the past episodes, have you ever done one on ports?

    ice wine… sweet!

Q1: Yes I only had a ice wine once: Paradise Ranch Icewine Pinot Noir 2005

Q2: I think it will something like 95+ from around the world, but i’m hoping you’ll do a show about late bottled vintage port. I think some of LBVs are serious values and perfect for Christmas.

  42. December 22, 2008

    Mark Neustadt

The only ice wines I’ve ever had were WAY too sweet for me. I don’t care for them.

Tomorrow’s show… let’s go with “Wine tasting for family gatherings”. That’s the ticket!

When I called Kiona, the young lady hadn’t heard any calls yet. C’MON VAYNIACS! GET ON THE PHONE!

Hello – Have never tried an ice wine, but I’m sure I will at some point.
Tomorrow’s show – anything, I just don’t want it to be your last, mmm-kay?
Are you wearing black on account of the Jets? I think I can understand that. But they may well yet make the playoffs.

  47. December 22, 2008

    BobbyTiger

Listen to Terrance, Gary. Budget sparklings! I drink the stuff by the bathtub fulls.
Have had a couple of Argentine dessert wines, but never an ice wine. The Kiona sounds like a possibility.

QOTD: The #600 show should be about the wines you enjoy the most.

  51. December 22, 2008

    Awesome! Good show!

Personally, I have not had ice wine. I’m not one for sweet wines. Being from Canada, I’d like to say I have. I should probably seek them out.

600 episodes is something to be quite proud of Gary. I think you can probably handle another 600! I’m not quite sure what kind of surprise you have up your sleeve. Is it an amazing guest such as Robert Parker, or is it a looser Jets player? Whatever it is, I’ll be watching, assured that you will keep bringin’ the thunder!

    Rock on!

  52. December 22, 2008

QOTD 1: The only ice wine I’ve ever had was a Selaks that I found browsing the WL site. It may not be an authentic ice wine, but it sure was good and rightly priced.

QOTD 2: An all Portugal and PV show? An enough already with the 2005 Bordeaux show? 600 seconds of Gary! Gary! Gary!

  54. December 22, 2008

Yeah Jackson Triggs is just way too syrupy. However that always made me wonder if it would work well on pancakes.

QOTD1: This Klaus Knoblauch Eiswein, can’t remember the exact details it finished a very golod night

    QOTD2: 100 pointers!!!

I find most Ice Wine at the $20 price point to be sickly sweet. Need to try the Kiona.
The Jets want to charge WHAT! for seats in the new stadium?

Don’t forget to donate to your local food pantry this holiday season. Remember there are hungry people out there who wish their only problem was opening a bad bottle of wine.

Kiona is just down the road. Outstanding winery and great people. They have a gorgeous new tasting room. Their ice wines are award winners every year. Here is a link to an article that came out in today’s local newspaper. http://www.tri-cityherald.com/kennewick_pasco_richland/story/423678.html

QsOTD: We bought an apple cider in Quebec this past summer that we’re thinking about trying soon. Tomorrow’s show will be about Christmas beer.

I think “The Wrestler” would have been way better is Mickey Rooney was in it instead of Mickey Rourke.

  59. December 22, 2008

    jammindude

I made the call! Nice to see him give up some love for a WA wine after what happened. (he has admitted in the past to being very emotional on the Monday after a Jets loss. LOL)

Called Kiona and they seemed pretty happy that their phone was ringing off the hook. I’ll be looking to check this wine out in the coming weeks.

  60. December 22, 2008

    Oliver Lee

By far the Cabernet Franc from Inniskillin. Great color and flavors.

What do you think of Icewines that are created by picking the grapes, then freezing them then fermenting them? I think Bonny Doon does one this way.

Haut Brion is almost 600, you could taste that.

    Great show as always.

QOTD 1: I recently had an ice wine (pinot gris) from WA that was tastey… saving my Inniskillin for Christmas Dinner

QOTD 2: I’m pretty sure I know what it is… especially if it involves that little hint you dropped on uStream… I certainly hope that’s what it is

Regarding 600 being the end of WLTV… I understand going out on top is the best way to go, but please, oh please… stick around…even if it’s part time. I’m sure most of the Vanyiacs will agree… we haven’t had our fill yet!!

    David T

QOTD1: I can’t remember the name! It was in a little 50ml bottle from Whole Foods that came in a little box for $8.99… it was the first one I ever had & so far the best. I have a bottle of an Ohio ice wine (Raven’s Glenn) that I’ll be sharing at Christmas.

QOTD2: It would be awesome to try to taste as many wines as you can in, say, 20 minutes. Try 20 in 20! Another idea that I haven’t seen (although I doubt you’d do tomorrow) is a ‘making of’ episode, where you have a second camera taping you & Mott tape a show, from the beginning (picking out & opening the wines), the actual taping, Mott linking things up, and getting it on air!

  68. December 22, 2008

    Daniel Kemp

The Wrestler movie does look awesome.

QOTD #2: I think tomorrow’s show will be about wines that you can have for Christmas.

QOTD: After a 1-week Washington State and B.C. wine trip, my favorite ice wine was a 2006 Whitetail Vineyard Icewine ($60) from Inniskillin Okanagan Winery in Oliver. My tasting notes were very limited but I wrote down apricot and honey in my journal. I found out after rating the wine that the bottle was voted “Best Dessert Wine In Canada” at the All Canadian Wine Championships in 2007

QOTD #2: I think you are going to have a special guest for #600. I would say a NY Jet but I hear they’re all in hiding.

Looking forward to show #600. At this rate, #1000 isn’t that far off. Om a seperate note, I found myself tasting certain foods this weekend and trying to figure out all the components. Did it with a wine I had as well but frustrated that I have a hard time distinguishing what was in the wine.

I’m a Dolphins fan but I was also very disappointed that the Jets blew that one. That would have set up an amazing match in NY next week.

Q1. My favourite ice wine would have to be Jost Ortega IceWine from Nova Scotia Canada. Another notable mention is Jost’s Maple Wine which is fantastic for those with a sweet tooth.

    Q2. Perhaps high-end wine tasting?

QOTD 1: I only find Inniskillin here in Monterrey, so it’s the only one I’ve tasted. ( although I have had tokaji but I don’t think it counts as ice-wine. )

QOTD 2: I couldn’t know waht the show would be about, maybe a recap of the best WLTV moments or a resumed “wines to watch out for in 2009″ presentation.

SIDENOTE: Cheer Up, the Jets don’t hold the secrets of the universe, and the players can always be replaced, I agree, “EFF” the Jets.

  93. December 22, 2008

    WineWoman

QOTD: Always pass up the opportunity to taste or buy an IceWine. I prefer Port or Sherry or sweet muscat.

You will wait till Christmas Eve to do the #600 episode. The Christmas Secret Pack and the importance of family. You will probably make an announcement of some sort, but I hope it isn’t about being the final episode. We still haven’t done Mexican and Baja CA wines. And the cheese–there’s always the cheese.

    QOTD: Inniskillin Riesling

    2nd QOTD: Brandy

    A consolation:

At the winery I work, the 1948 Tucker upstairs is YOUNGER than the last time my Cardinals hosted a playoff game. So, you see? It can be worse.

Saw episode #500 live in San Francisco. Keep up the outstanding work.

    Happy #600!

First of all Gary, thanks for the big shout out at the 16 minute mark, that had me grinning like a cheshire cat. I’ve been toasting the big 47 with some Henriques & Henriques 10 Year Old Boal madeira, which is superb – and I still hope and pray you will do a madeira episode down the road. My guess is for tomorrow you will do a blind tasting of top drawer Bordeaux cru classes, something outrageous. GV rock the house! :-)

Secondly this ice wine episode was very well organized and executed, it was good to see different regions and styles contrasted. I also love the Kiona ice wine and some of the late harvest style dessert wines from the Tri Cities area of Washington. Personally I think the champagne worked just as well last Friday as the ice wine would have in the same circumstances, no hindsight errors in judgement there. As usual, GV’s palette is all-world class.

QOTD – For a qpr point, although it technically does not qualify, I am a big fan of the Cooper Mountain Vineyards (from Oregon) vin de glace Pinot Gris – where the grapes are thrown in the freezer. It is not very expensive and delivers quite a wallop of flavour.

Thanks again for the shout out!
    Ray

qotd#1: renwood zinfandel ice wine. a good alternative to port / sherry.
qotd#2: family? friends? cheese? bordeaux tasting?

Boy, the Jets were so disappointing yesterday – what a waste! who was that stranger wearing #4 and underthrowing everybody?

Really hope tomorrow isn’t the last show – that would be sad. Especially cause that would mean the Mott-Cam would never come to be.

QOTD – just tasted ice wine, but never bought a bottle… (do have the seleks from the book, but not opened yet)

QOTD2 – i think tomorrow’s show will be about budget/value sparkling wines (in celebration, and timely for the coming holidays). seeing shasha would be fun too!

    Please do a Mott Cam!

Actually, I’ve had and enjoyed the Kiona icewine … apart from its viscosity, the thing that stands out about it is the Windex nose. Good stuff though.

    Charming ep.

QOTD: Ep 600? Maybe a visit with your family, Liz and Sasha at the very least.

QOTD: Tomorrow’s show? About the number 600.

Sorry, haven’t had any ice wines yet. I hope to fix that this Christmas.

QOTD: I ran downstairs to get some Inniskillin 2006 Riesling ice wine leftover from last night to sip with the show, so I guess that’s my favorite. I’m not much for sweet beverages, but I chose it to go with a lemon pudding cake souffle sort of dessert, and lemon pistachio biscotti, as the description said it had some lemon flavors, and indeed it did and it was quite perfect with the desserts. It’s pretty light and not too sweet.

I hope tomorrow’s show is going to be cruise oriented maybe with everyone dressed up as a member of Gilligan’s Island and you would have an umbrella in your glass. A small one. And maybe your top most exciting wines of the year.

  103. December 23, 2008

    David Falchek

QOTD: I always though gerwurzt makes the best ice wine.

I think Vidal is pronounced VEE-Dahl, after the French guy who made the cross. Gotta brush up on your almost totally obscure hybrids.

You said Dirty Jers. That’s what (some) locals call the N.J. kids at the University of Scranton.

Tomorrow going to be the day you do some txacolina?

QOTD: Grrr, never had an ice wine before, but have had Tokaji’s. haha, I know those don’t count, but they’re in the sweet catagory.

QOTD 2: Hmmm, I think you will bring out the more expensive wines and have a taste at them. You’re probably decanting them already, aren’t you ;)

QOTD: My favourite Ice Wine is the Inniskillin Sparkling Riesling. It will change your world it’s so good! The bubbles give the palate so much lift and refreshment….It’s nearly impossible to get, but if you have any connections, you should work them for a bottle!

  109. December 23, 2008

    Ray Barnes

By the way GV my daughter was totally impressed that I got the big shout out on your show. It was replayed twice just to make sure we didn’t miss anything. She couldn’t help but notice you were greeting me Happy Birthday while playing with a plastic monkey! Are you ready for primate time Gary? (winking)

    Another great show.

QOTD: Gehringer Brothers Minus 9 Ehrenfelser Icewine is probably my favorite,

    Happy holidays Gary!

Hey- lurker here and fellow suffering Jets fan. The best thing about Sunday was I finished the rest of my Aries Pecorino!

QOTD: I got some ice wine from relatives in Toronto but I haven’t opened it yet.

QOTD2: I think you’ll bring in a small audience of random customers from the store and your family to spice things up! Maybe, have a live Q&A after the show.

Last Ice Wine I had ws from a winery in NY on Long Island and it was years ago. Good but not great – just not a fan of the sweet stuff.

Sorry to say you’re right – the Jets season is over. There’s still another NY team in the mix though so how about converting to the “other side” for the remainder of the season??

  124. December 23, 2008

QOTD: we tried the Thirty Bench Cabernet Icewine http://www.thirtybench.com/ a few weeks ago – also on an icy day, with freezing rain.

UNBELIEVABLE! Strawberry-rhubarb pie, you won’t need dessert, you’d have it in a 3 oz serving.

Picked up a tasting tip: hold icewine in your mouth for ten count, the taste receptors on the side of your tongue give you a chance to experience the full complexity of the wine.

    Mott got three tastes today!

QOTDs: I have never had an ice wine, but will try one before the week is out. Tomorrow, I think Gary is going to have a special guest — Santa. Mulled wines maybe?

  129. December 23, 2008

    Bossman

Gary, I know you don’t want to hear anything about the jets right now
And I know this probably won’t be the show tomorrow,
But if you did a wine tasting with leon Washington or Thomas jones (I’d rather leon haha–seems like a good guy) I’d be the happiest man alive!!!!
Make it happen Gary! Cant wait for 600!!

  130. December 23, 2008

    Chris Braun

I like German eisweins far more than other ice wines that I’ve tasted — more complexity to go with the sweetness. I think my favorite was a Hermann Dönnhoff that I tasted at the winery in 2001.

  131. December 23, 2008

    dafo

QOTD: Only had one bottle so far, which is something from Oliver winery in Indiana. Tasted like raisins & apricots in honey.

    QOTD2: $6 vs $60 vs $600 wine. Blind.

  132. December 23, 2008

    Eric G

QOTD: The best was a Hillebrand Showcase Vidal with a little age on it (5+ years). I was disappointed that you chose jackson-triggs to showcase Niagara. Very cool winery, but very average wines. Hillebrand, Inniskillin, and Stratus are making great icewines in the Niagara region. Konzelman placed a vidal icewine in Spectators 2008 “top 100″. All consistent plays.

    QOTD2: I’m guessing Champagne? Congrats on 600!

  133. December 23, 2008

    Tom T.

No favorite ice wine but did have one or two. I think you will do a tour of WL again or have the show up on the second floor. BTW the movie “The Wrestler” has got rave reviews on imdb.com, and Marissa Tomei is in this movie.

  134. December 23, 2008

Gary V! I was just catching up on some old posts over at GRS and saw the special guest post you did for J.D. on quality bargain wines for Thanksgiving. That post led me here and to what has been hours of catching up on the site.

I’ve got to say man – I’m a big fan already! I’d gotten a little into wine a few years back but never seemed to go anywhere. Your shows here have reminded me how great of an experience it was and have inspired me to get back to tasting.

Condolences on the Jets. If the cliche’ “It’s not over, man!” won’t do any good, I don’t suppose the “There’s always next season” does any better.

By the way – did I see a comment up there referring to the Jets as, “another NY team”?! I’d assume that would be heresy and sacrilege in your hometown!

QOTD 1: Never had the chance. I’m a fan of desert wines though, and it seems like the Kiona would be a good place to start.

QOTD 2: You’ve got to let Mott do the Intro, man! That’d be great. Personally, I’m hoping for a promise for another 600 shows!

  135. December 23, 2008

QOTD 1: My favorite ice wine? Inniskillin Cabernet Franc Ice Wine

QOTD 2: I am looking forward to a show about NOTHING. ;-)

I never heard of Ice Wine before today! I learned something new!

Answer to question of the day #1–no favorite, will try one of these days and will let you know..

Answer to question of the day #2–my guess is show on wine:-)

  137. December 23, 2008

QOTD #1: I’m embarrassed to say, I have no idea which ice wines I’ve tried. It’s usually been something we’ve sampled at a nice lounge or after a large meal at a steak house. There have been about 3 or 4 that I’ve tasted. I enjoy them, but not as much as a good tawny port after five courses. ;)

QOTD #2: Considering you’re hitting the big 6-0-0 right before Xmas, perhaps a year in review? Go back and re-taste your favorite (or least favorite) bottles of 2008?

  138. December 23, 2008

    CaptainOats

Gary seemed pretty burnt out on this. I feel that with the 3 days off between episodes how nice it was not to have to do the show. 600 episodes will be all…..if he gets to 600. I don’t blame him one bit. He is a busy guy and there will be bigger and better things from him in the future.

  139. December 23, 2008

    Happy Holidays to you all!

Great Ice Wine show. Fave one that I had 4 months ago was the Henry of Pelham 2006 Riesling Icewine, after I served it up for some San Diego spine surgeons here in chilly Toronto. Most of them had never heard of the stuff, so it was really fascinating to see their reactions. One guy out of seven, wasn’t into the sweetness but agreed on the deliciousness factor.

A cool show would be a vertical tasting of the wines of Château Musar. The two times I’ve ever tasted these wines were around Christmas. The flavors are all over the map. Love to see your and Mott’s reactions.

    Thanks Gary!

    Many Blessings,
    Andy

  143. December 23, 2008

    JigglyJock

Never had an ice wine before. Glad to hear there are some ice wines that are affordable.

I think the 600th show will be Gary taking a bubble bath, sipping on a buttery chard.

  144. December 23, 2008

    Susan

    QOTD #2: Episode 600 will be another SUPER blind episode…MANY wines…many gift ideas… :)

  145. December 23, 2008

Good episode even though the Jets suck.

    QOTD:
-Never had one…..perhaps what to drink to celebrate something like a 600th episode :)

  146. December 23, 2008

    jjmabaseb

Never had ice wine before. I’m not a huge fan of the sweet stuff, but I will try someday.

I sort of expected you to save episode 600 for the x-mas secret pack.

I feel you pain. The Broncos have been ripping my heart out all season. I’m surprised the line right now is only Chargers by 9.5…it will be nothing short of a christmas miracle if my donkeys go into SD on Sunday night and walk out with a playoff birth. I sort of hope they loose so we don’t have to play the Colts.

    Jon in Denver

Lots of nice ice wines to be found in the upstate NY area near Watkins Glen and Lake Senaca, or for an interesting and somewhat different treat try Wild Turkey America Honey, the only bourbon based liquer.

  148. December 23, 2008

    Jay

Shouldn’t the Jets be better in the snow than our crappy Hawks? I’m confused.

QOTD #1: I had one in Leavenworth but I can’t remember the name. Big help, I know.

QOTD #2: Wines that go with a big Christmas prime rib roast.

First off….I told you back at the Beginning of the season that the Seahawks would give me an early Christmas present with a win over your NY Jets….even though we had a HORRIBLE season….we still beat your Jets!

QOTD…..Last Ice wine I had was last Years Kiona…..Best I have had in recent years…the 2006 Chateau St Michelle Chenin Blanc Ice wine…

QOTD….I do not care what the 600th episode will be…but I hope Gary will make it all about family and bring in his fellow Vaynerchuk’s to show them the LOVE!!

  151. December 23, 2008

    Jayhitek

    QOTD: Never had one.
QOTD2: #600… hmmm.. what would GV do.. Blind tasting to go with Christmas dinners?
Or are you secretly looking for ideas for #600 so you just posed it to all the vayniacs?

  152. December 23, 2008

    Harry Gabrielson

Never had an ice wine sounds delicous though

I think that episode 600 will be about $100 plus wines.

P.S. Vikings are in the same disapointment business so we feel your pain in MN

  153. December 23, 2008

    Salvatore

We predict; tomorrows show will be about the asti side of the bubbly.

Time to get rid of the football b.s.

This is a wine show ! Not a wining show about the damn Jets!

    Time for New Years resolution!
How about getting a little deeper into wine making, makers, regions, maps, process, history. Short regional videos….Gary on site in the vinyards around the world!

After all you are a wine show ………

If I want to watch pissing and moaning about football….I’ll watch all the pundants who make a living pissing and moaning about the wrong play……blah blah…. b.s. Who cares except frustrated little boys; who think their macho, talking about football!!

My idea of good info; is finding a Great bottle of wine for $15 that competes with a $50 bottle. That’s what I want to know !

  154. December 23, 2008

QOTD: Never had one and it’s not on my to-do list. The word sweet frightens me a little when it comes to wine. Deliciousness sounds better but sweet scares me.

QOTD: The next show may be the cava & prosecco show. Or maybe that’s next week. How about a last minute shoppers value wine show. Or hostess gift wine ideas.

  155. December 23, 2008

    KenG

QOTD #1 Pillitteri, Vidal Sparkling Icewine – amazing and their Chambourcin Special Select Late Harvest (yes I know technically not an icewine but a great desert wine)

    QOTD #2 More bubbly Cava/Prosecco

QOTD: I have never had an ice wine. I want to try one though… maybe next year =D

I think episode 600 will be about wine and cheese! For 600 episodes there is nothing better than the ultimate pairing!!

Don’t feel bad Gary at least your not a Lion’s fan, but then again who is?

QOTD1: Had a sampling of ice wine in the St. Catherine’s / Niagara region during a trip to Niagara Falls, Canada few years ago. I do not remember the vineyard, but it wasn’t Jackson-Triggs.
    QOTD2: Top vino values found in 2008. A top 5 (with 5 different price points – sub $10, sub $20, sub $30, sub $50, sub $100).

I agree with another poster, let the Mottster run wild in #600!

  159. December 23, 2008

    RobRx

Erich Krarosowitch Reisling Eiswein 2003 Austrian Icewine

2 – I’d like to see more blind shows, and more shows where price to quality is explored at higher price points than the very common casual wine drinker’s $15-20 limit. I am looking, for example, for the $35-60 cabs that match or beat the $250 Napa wines. Parker usually finds some every vintage, but they are usually impossible to buy. Spectator claims to find some every vintage but often misses the mark with their tasting by comittee system. It would be very valuable to have a third wine person seeking out those sort of values so it is easier to determine what to buy by the case.

  160. December 23, 2008

    QOTD: Selaks Ice Wine 2005

Great show as always Gary !!!!! And I hope you really dont end at 600!

QOTD: Our wine club really enjoyed the 2006 Whitewater Hill Ice Wine Chardonnay Zero Below from Colorado. Very complex and rich with notes of orange zest, pineapple and mango. Like liquid pudding! 29.5 brix for only $19. YUMMY!

We also tried a Bonny Doon Riesling Vin de Glaciere Icewine that had hints of pear, pineapple and nectarine. They use a process called cryoextraction which involves freezing the grapes after harvesting, then extraction. This completely goes against the rules but it’s cheap, and it tastes great.

Don’t stop at 600… maybe bring AJ and Dad into the show…

  163. December 23, 2008

    Karl Laczko

Season over?…. what season? ….. oh, that season!

QOTD – 2004 Ewald Pfeiffer Silvaner Eiswein, Pfalz. (Only one so far, had it last weekend, not bad, 88pts, give or take)

QOTD2 – surprise me! (Must be something Christmas related, or would that be too obvious? – go on, be obvious!).

  164. December 23, 2008

QOTD1: had a couple canadian icewines, don’t remember the brands.
QOTD2: obviously ep600 will be my dream come true– Robert Parker and Gary V comparing their “pal”s!

  165. December 23, 2008

I really feel your pain. So much hope and expectation and lose to the Suckin’ Seahawks! I thought Favre had played in those elements before? Off to better things . . . wine.

Great show on ice wine. Cool swirl which is quite intriguing walking the streets of Vienna where they warm it up like a hot toddy. It hits the spot.

QOTD #1: Other than the icewine in Austria I’ve had the Mission Hill Riesling Ice Wine from Okanaga in western Canada. They make some very nice wines.

QOTD #2: #600? It needs to be epic. How about bringing in the rock of your life, Lizzy, and sit back on the laid back couch and give us a look into what wines YOU are having for Christmas/Holiday dinner?

    Keep the faith baby.

    Cheers!

The hubby and I have never had Ice Wine.

For the 600th episode you should have your family on the show.

qotd: Never had ice wine, but I’ve had ice cider from Quebec.
qotd2: If I had to guess, I’d say that some of your family would be on – since family is priority A#1 for you. Let’s say for the sake of fun that your wife will make an appearance on the program!

PS: My two football teams are a combined 3-24 this year. Cheer up! – you don’t live in Michigan!

Nice show. Will look for ice wine. As to being a Jets fan, and this is coming from a lifetime Packer fan (a team that lost a LOT between Lombardi and the Holmgren years and is losing a LOT right now), don’t EVER say you’ve “had the fandom sucked right out of you.” If you love the Jets, you love the Jets, even if they get their butts kicked.
Now chin up! Eyes forward! And happy 600th episode!

QOTD 1-Inniskillin Ice Wine vidal-Lots of papaya, tangerine, dried pineapple great balance and acidity, and the finish just keeps going and going.

QOTD 2-How about a vertical tasting show for #600.

  174. December 23, 2008

    Kelly Goff

QOTD: Ice wine is too sweet for me, but I will try one just to expand my pallate!

I hope #600 will be the Vayniacs meeting Gary’s family again, including Lizzy, because that is what it’s all about. I met her while you both were in VA and she is absolutely adorable! I think the other Vayniacs want to meet her too, unless she is scared?! And truthfully I wouldn’t blame her…

    Happy Holidays to you Gary!

I lived in Germany for a time, bought some nice bottle of Ice Wine, saved it until i got married and opened it with my honey. Despite it being…. not so good, my wife said she liked it, i wont mess around with ice wine again.

Its not over… there’s always next year when the Jets sign Cassell.

    Merry Christmas Everyone!

  176. December 23, 2008

Love ice wine and have tried at least a half dozen. A number of Finger Lakes wineries make one using either vidal or riesling. Favorite was probably one from Chateau Ste Michelle.

QOTD: I don’t like sweet stuff.

Second QOTD: Special Guest, Santa and wines to go with Christmas trees.

Good QOTD I love when you try to make us think. You may do something funny like yellow tail and mad dog but I don’t think so. I would think something few have taste cahor or madirin or maybe something of the wall like calvados. No, I’ve got it the ultimate holiday drink, no not champagne… eggnog.
600 shows, it has been enjoyable but the personal price may be too high, this must come out of your family time, high price to pay. Thanks for all the fun, you do what your heart is asking.

  179. December 24, 2008

Haven’t tried many, but Vidal is good. They are very sweet and truly dessert wines.

QOTD: I have a recollection of trying a Bonny Doon Muscat Vin de Glaciere several years ago. Nice, fun, sweet and fruity.

QOTD: How bout a family show with all the Vaynerchuks sitting around the table tasting vino and enjoying life together!

  181. December 24, 2008

    Bobo36

Gary: Good show. I have found the ice wines to be more sweeter than sauternes early in their lives. I like to drink the sauternes at 8 to 10 years after bottle date; sweetness starts to minimize. I don’t know if this happens the same with Ice Wine since i have not had one at 8 to 10 years and truthfully don’t know if they have the complexity to last that long. Any ideas?
QOTD: Inniskillin & Selaks unknown years.
QOTD: Group Tasting with all your staff that makes it happen for you.

    Alan and Gayle

QOTD: Our favorite ice wine is manufactured in our home town (so we are a little prejudice). Three Sisters vineyards makes “Dahlonega Gold”.
Dahlonega Ga being the first site of gold discovery in the USA. The vineyards are in the mountains (yes there are mountains in Georgia, the Appalachian Trail starts here) It sells for $28. Pairs AWESOME with homemade biscottis (Gayle being Italian has perfected the Biscotti)

QOTD 1 : A 1996 Seppi Landmann Gewurtztraminer Vallée Noble, Selection de Grains Nobles Vin de Glace. Just drunk my last half bottle a few weeks ago , and it was just like coming from heaven…
QOTD 2 : Don’t know , but i am shure it will be as good , as all the other show’s , keep on going Gary U ROCK…

  185. December 24, 2008

    Herm

I haven’t had an Ice wine…..I don’t anticipate having any but to expand my palate and wine knowledge I will eventually have some…..I think your 600th show should be about what your favorite Jets are drinking over the holidays…

My wife Anita says: Inniskillin Cabernet Franc is less sweet more flavorful and the BEST of the ice wines (that she has tried). We still have one bottle from 1995 in our cellar.

Merry Christmas from the hills of Canada eh!

    Anita and Dave

Where’s tomorrow’s show? Dave says Gary will be dressed as the grinch and review white zinfandels.

One of my favorite ice wines is actually from a winery that is about 30 minutes from my house. The 2003 Ice Wine from French Creek Winery (now J. Maki winery: http://www.jmakiwinery.com) is one of my favorites. It also took a silver medal in the Vinalies Internationales in Paris. Yummy stuff! I really wish more Pennsylvania wineries would understand that trying to grow red varietals is mostly a waste of resources and that they should stick to what works for the region. Thumbs up for Vidal Blanc in PA!

Sorry about the green. new coach and 09 might be something to watch. Favre will need a walker, but his arm is still young. Favorite Ice Wine: Pillitteri, from Ontario Canada. Tasted the ‘04 vintage. yum..

    Lawrence Leichtman

I assume the Xmas pack for tomorrow. I am not a fan of Ice wines. I have tasted dozens and prefer the taste of botyritis in my dessert wines so Sauternes and Beerenauslases for me. Trockenbeerenauslese when I am feeling flush in the wallet. Don’t despair the Jets. They still had a great season and just fell flat in the last two games. I left a message for Kiona, hope many others did. Don’t quit at 600. You are still one of the most enjoyable blog on the internet.

HEY- I just called Kiona (a day later) and thanked them for the “vivacious, decadent wine tasting experience” specifically on your behalf. I asked how many calls they received and she said 13 or 14… what? Slackers!!!

QOTD 1: Probably Konzelmann Vidal Icewine, especially for the price vs. overpriced Inniskillin.

QOTD 2: #600 Tomorrow + Christmas secret pack = “a vivacious, decadent wine tasting episode.” Can’t wait!

The only ice wine I have tried is Magnotta Vidal Ice Wine from the Niagara peninsula of Ontario, Canada. I have found it in 50ml bottles at around $10 per bottle, so I drink it in two portions each of just 25ml. At that price, you can’t guzzle the whole bottle in a single sitting. It is fabulous ice wine with pleasant sweetness balanced by good levels of acidity. The finish seems to last for several minutes. To enjoy this ice wine, I recommend taking tiny sips and just savoring it over a half hour or so.

I want to try other ice wines soon, most notably the Jackson-Triggs.

QOTD: Just spent 4 days in Niagara-on-the-Lake and hit all the wineries. Palatine Ice Wine is by far the best and also a great price! They also have CabSauv Ice Wine!!! It’s $100 for 375ml, but excellent.

  196. December 25, 2008

    Per Storm (Denmark)

My best Icewine was a genuine Weegmüller Eiswein 1998 Riesling – extremly intense.

Mys guess is that tomorrows show is about port, that you seem to have missed out up to christmas.

    Keep it up….

  197. December 25, 2008

    Brian Barrick

I don’t generally go for ice wines, as they tend to be overly sweet and very expensive. I did enjoy the Bonny Doon Vin de Glacier, but that was years ago.

Rosenblum makes some great dessert wines, including a Late Harvest Viognier, the Rosie Rabbit Late Harvest Zinfandel, and my favorite is the Gallagher Reserve Black Muscat.

  198. December 26, 2008

QOTD – I have not had enough ice wines to have a favorite, but I did taste and buy some at winery in Canada near Niagara Fall. And I have had a few Germany ice wines that were good. I guess I need to try another one this week.

I enjoyed the show and I enjoy ice wines.
QOTD – 1) I have had the Jackson Triggs and and Inniskillin, both of which I like, 2) The show will be about lookin forward to the 2009 Draft.

    I’ve never had ice wine! : (
Actually I’m watching this a few days late so I’ve already seen what tomorrows is about… but I’ve already forgotten! I think it will be about… brandy! No, I’d remember that. That would be amazing though!!

    Gary,

Just wanted to clarify a few comments from some viewers regarding the Bonny Doon Vin De Glaciere.

Long story short, we now make it out of Riesling (sharp acidity and very very focused) under the Pacific Rim wines. It made sense to us (may be to us only) since it is made out of Riesling.

Just wanted to leave a note in the event folks were confused – I am sometimes.

QOTD: Egon Muller Eiswein – Very nice….

Jackson-Triggs Vidal Icewine. Hi Gary, I’m a wine consultant and educator (on a smaller scale than you of course), living on Vancouver Island, BC, Canada. i lead courses on wine appreciation, help restaurants rationalize their wine lists and lead tastings for the public every Saturday at the best private store in the community I live in. Canadian icewines have established a great reputation on the world market, particularly in Japan. It’s too bad you didn’t have a better example than the J-T Vidal for your 599th episode. J-T is one of VINCOR’s brands. VINCOR is Canada’s largest wine company now owned by Constellation Brands. I enjoy your show. Happy New Year.

    Kristen

Ah I love Vayner-tasks. I wonder if Kiona got more calls.

QOTD: I’m not really a fan of ice wines. I’ve only had a few, and I will keep trying, but I don’t like that syrupy-sweetness of them. I prefer something lighter and less intense. Although the Sakonnet Vineyards Winterwine (Vidal Blanc) isn’t bad. That was my go-to wine for visitors to the winery who liked white zinfindel. And they all loved it…

  208. December 30, 2008

    Hi Gary,
A friend and colleague of mine here at Casa Larga turned me on to your show and I’ve visited your store the last time I was in NJ – very impressed with both!

At any rate, I wanted to introduce you to an Ice Wine produced by the Winery I work for – Casa Larga’s Fiori Vidal Ice Wine. It recently received the trophy for “Best Dessert Wine in the World” from the International Wine & Spirits Competition in London, and has been highly acclaimed at a variety of other competitions here in the states. It really is our pride and joy here in Upstate NY. Please get back to me with your address – I’d love to send you a bottle. Cheers!

First time to see the show and I gotta ask. Is this you after coffee or before? I’m hoping after. Seriously, good show.

I’ve tried a lot of Canadian Ice Wines and they range quite a bit in complexity and flavour. One of my faves is Vineland Estates Ice Wine. A good way to determine a good ice wine (or any wine) is to look up wine awards. The Canadian Wine Awards or the Ontario Wine Awards (done yearly) are a good way to determine a quality drop.

The next show will be on wine awards as a guide to assist in picking a good wine, or help you venture out into another varietal you’re unfamiliar with.

    Cheers
    Jack

    Hey Gary

QOTD: Have really had an icewine that has really, really impressed me yet. The last one I drunk was Mogao Ice Wine from China – it was a pretty poor effort, but it at least fitted into the theme of icewines from around the World. I think they’re producing quite a bit in China now.

    Cheers

QotD – Never met an icewine I didnt like. Inniskillen is wonderful stuff. Ironically enough, they have it by the glass for a very reasonable price in the Canadian restaurant in Epcot, Disneyworld.

QOTD: I had a German Eisvine (sp?) once, but good luck with the name. It was lovely. I had a Canadian one from BC, and it BLEW. I like dessert wines, though I rarely drink them.

ha ha ha…. I know how you feel, Gary. I was cursing the Seahawks 4 games into the season. I knew it was over then. Glad to see ( ego ego ego ) the Washington wine once again won. I keep seeing the Kiona in the stores and wonder if I should buy it. I def am now. QOTD: Ive had some quite good ice wines from Icicle Ridge up here in Peshastin, WA. Very low bottling ( around 30 – 40 cases or so ), so its pretty pricey… $70 for a half bottle. Really good stuff to me though. :)

Sorry, I just had to see this past show following the Jets vs. Seahawks! At least the Jets were in it late into the season. Our Seahawks were DONE EARLY!
BTW, having visited Red Mountain AVA many times and spacifically Kiona Vinyards, I will point out that “They” are quick to point out that it is pronounced (Ky-ona) like HI ONA….whatever that means! Love your passion/obsession and your shows

Im really suprised so many people can say they don’t like iced wines. I’m obsessed. Have visited niagra region on several occasions and even did a harvest. Its like saying you don’t like chocolate. 2004 peller estate cabernet franc, unreal…

  222. July 15, 2009

    JJ Williams

This is JJ Williams from Kiona. We have had a number of calls from your viewers… keep them coming!

We just bottled up the 2008 Ice Wine. Historically, our Ice Wine has been primarily Chenin Blanc, but for two or three years (including the 2006 vintage in this review) we blended it with Riesling. For this current vintage, we have switched back to Chenin Blanc, so even if you have had a Kiona Ice Wine recently, it would be worthwhile to check out the new 2008 vintage.

Thanks for the great review! Cheers!

  223. July 21, 2009

    Craig

Of all the wines that I’ve read about, the Ice Wines piqued my interest more than any other. I stepped into the wine shop nearest my house and found a bottle of the Kiona. Was pleasantly surprised to see that you had reviewed it here. I look forward to opening and tasting it.

Gary, when’s the next time you’ll do more tastings from the cold regions?

While you’re at it, why not get back to another show of sweet wine reveiws? I’d love to see some Sauterne, Tokay (Tokaji), or Trockenbeerenauslese reviews. Especially the last two. Tell us how the nations of the Rhineland are doing as a wine producing region.
