More value wines in ‘09 is good. $15 is a splurge for me right now. Hope that changes for the better in ‘09.

But I’m also up for the more expensive tasting. I might not get close to that type of wine, but I love to hear about them. Vicarious thrills are next best to the real thing.

    Wishes for a bright 2009!

Why a brown bottle? Are they saying that their Reisling is more similar to the (German!)-Rheingau rather than (German!)-Moselle.
After drink Riesling (from Germany) for 40 years, the bottle color ’sort of’
indicates the taste of the area.

Nice to see you tasted the Les Obriers de La Pèira, though I must say I disagree with part of your assessment. I can’t stand things like Mollydooker, or much anything considered “new world,” but this wine is very interesting. Yeah, it’s got big fruit, but there’s more to it than that. Sure, maybe like a modern Chateauneuf (though I honestly like it better than say, Autard’s La Cote Ronde, which is too modern for me). But to me, no way like an Australian wine… If I had heard your review first it probably would have scared me from trying it. To me, the fruit is way more real than you give it credit for, and definitely tastes like where it’s from… a great value, for sure. My note:

11/17/2008 rated 91 points: In glass 30 minutes. Inky purple color. Massive nose shows pencil lead, guava, wet clay, paste, and mint leafs. This is a brooding nose, but fantastic as it’s earthy aromas as opposed to fruity ones. Very soft and creamy in the mouth showing some oak spice. Finish is also quite spicy, showing deep, opulent cherry and blackberry flavors, after an initial bitterness. This has silky tannins with no harsh edges on the finish. Definitely delicious and a great value.

Happy New Year to Gary, Mott, and everyone behind the scenes at WLTV!

Missed an opportunity here, though – you could have had a Question of the Year! Really looking forward to the Value Wines in 09, and I’m excited to hear that they’ll be more blind tastings as well.

Great year of shows. Thanks for all of your effort. I am a pretty inexperienced taster when it comes to wine, and your last two reviews of Languedoc wines have me wanting to try some. Luckily, I live near the Kermit Lynch retail store, so I’m sure there are some great ones there.

Hey “dope” :) , seriously, I wonder if your yapping (not meaning that word in a bad way) hurts your accuracy in judging the wines you have on your show. Maybe if you give a bit more time to sense the finish (if they have one).

PS ya know that the KJ is very high yields..and very processed. I like edmunds st john because they are “real” wines.. not manufactured.. every year they are different.. not made to a spec.. so they vary wildly.. their other wines are even better. …

Happy New Year Gary and Mott and to your families. Good reviews today… I was rooting for the Catena… I have enjoyed their Malbec and Cab, sounds like they need to work on their Chard or maybe even give Torrontes a try. Have not seen Catena do the Torrontes varietal yet.

  52. December 31, 2008

    Roberto (rarojas)

Gary you remember how you sometimes say there is never great wine, only great bottles… could this have been the case with the KJ Reserve? I mean your pallate is yours and Parker’s is his, however, I don’t recall you guys ever being more than 3 pts apart… just a thought.

Furthermore and more importantly, please, please have a healthy, happy 2009 and my best to Lizzie and family. My best as well to Mr. Chris Mott.

Reg. Football, are u gonna root for the Falcons and Dolphins now? ok, never mind the Dolphins, but the Falcons at least.

    Ben Janssen South Australia

Good to see the Clare Valley, South Australia getting a showing. My home town.
Petaluma wines have been getting more and more expensive in the last 3/4 years due to exposure in the US market and big scores from big wine guys

  61. December 31, 2008

    Moselman

Just wondering if there might be a link between the Petaluma and a high school girlfriend of mine named Peta who moved to Australia many MANY moons ago. She was an outside-the-box gal!

Enjoying a multi-media experience watching Ep 602 and Canada-USA Junior hockey game (Canada prevailing after spotting the US three early goals), while enjoying a Finca Flichman Malbec alongside a K-J of pizza, a Kraft Delissio of the Canadian variety (Pepperoni, Mushroom, Bacon). Great way to round out a thoroughly crappy ‘08.

Have to say the Aussies would please my palate more if they’d promote sweeter sweeter Rieslings.

AND, for dessert to celebrate the great hockey result, a lovely blue cheese with cranberry on Triscuit crackers (aaack, another Kraft product – really abandoning my values here).

Happy New Year y’all! Can’t thank Gary and the WL crew enough for providing a wonderful experience for yet another year.

    Finally – Go, Blackhawks!!!!!!!

P.S. Tonight I’m pulling out a ‘99 Domaine Serene and ‘01 Beaux Freres for NY dinner of roasted pork. The idea of blind tastings, more guests and value wines work for me in ‘09.

    Happy New Year Vaynernation!
Great show. I like the Thunder Show’s resolutions. It’s so thrilling to find an extreme value. I almost picked the the KJ GR Chard for sh1ts-&-giggles; glad I didn’t.

One chard i did enjoy, though a little one-dimensional, was the Vampire vineyards’ Chard. It won’t change your life, but I’d get it again.

G, Thanks for an awesome ‘08. You certainly opened my eyes and palate to a ton of varietals that I probably never would have ventured into. I am greatly anticipating more of what you, WLTV, and WL bring for ‘09 and beyond.

I’ve been watching it for a couple years now and love it.
Your show has spurned my wife and I on to start going to wine festivals all over the place. We are having a blast.

Her Christmas present to me this year was to put me in a “wine club.”

Worthy goal: value wines. Only the term “value” still sends a chill up my spine. zI’m working on a new phrase for good low-priced wines. I’m too tired to think right now though. Later.

I think the problem with this value wine episode is that there weren’t more wines from Europe, southern rhone, bordeaux, and spain are where it’s at, kj?, cantena?, cali is blowing it in the value category. here’s to more southern rhone wine in 2009, kermit lynch that shit. happy new year, keep it up man, the under $20 connoisseurs are changing the wine world.

    KAHUNA

Happy New Year Gary and Mott!

Great episode- I am still a fan of the 5 wine episodes as it requires me to pay attention longer to keep the spreadsheet updated. I know how sucky it is to not be playing on Wildcard Weekend to have a week off is brutal waiting for the defending SUPER BOWL CHAMPION GIANTS to play!

Anyhow here are a few things I would like to see in the New Year on the BLN show-
A tasting in a strip club
A wine and Taco Bell pairing

    Vinny Testaverde

Gary…thanks for another year of fun and entertainment. I like Kahuna’s idea of a wine/taco pairing…for other fun/challenging pairings…how about Asparagus? I love that you are doing more value wines…but how about finding more of the hidden gems? Those small producers that have yet to be discovered, Cameron in Oregon, or Bindi in Australia?

Take a varietal, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, whatever, and take us through the basic level to a better level to a very good level.

I would find this most helpful in my wine growth.

Have a great New Year good sir. I really appreciate your fine efforts.

Yo G, NIIIIIIIIIIIICE QPR VINOS!!!! Ya rated a 90 point Robert Parker
Vino (Kendall Jackson Chard) an “81″ ?? Heck, I’ve drank a lot of his
“90 to 95 point” wines that tasted like 60 to 70 point Swills to ME
    PAL……..

    The Languedoc sounds like a Must-Find !!

That was a great show Brother…..!!!!!!

I watched it fast in the begining but now I just saw it again and although you looked a little tired and not really all there or very excited like you usually are, you still did a great job. I enjoy watching your shows and trying new wines. Looking forward to 2009 and maybe you can have me on one day. I don’t know why…or what I can offer as a guest, but hell, it would be nice to be on tasting wines with the little guy in fornt of the camera…lol

I hope you had a great time New Years Eve.

    See you soon.

will have to get the Languedoc wine. It seems right up my alley. Thanks for a great 2008 of episodes GV. We had our NY without power so had 15 people for Sparklers and snacks with flashlights and coats. Very interesting and actually one of the best tastes of Champagnes in years. All growers except a ringer 1970 Bollinger. Couldn’t really see what it was in the dark but the nose filled the room. Let’s start seeing some fire up for the Thunder Cruise. With the dismal weather we are having here, rain and 35 degrees on top of ice, the Caribbean sounds better and better.

I’ve been watching for about a year but this is my first time commenting.

As someone who graduated from school in 2007 and still considers himself part of the “CKC”, I appreciate the resolution to emphasize value wines for the coming year. I bought a few bottles of the $8 Finca La Linda Tempranillo 2006 that you reviewed in episode 455 as a Christmas gift for my Mom (whose name is Linda) and she loved it. Keep up the good work!

    Happy New Year

I’ve tried the K-J Grand Reserve Chard, and I have to agree with you. This is exactly the kind of overblown, overpriced, mass-produced wine that I stay away from.

Edmunds St John is at the opposite end of the spectrum. These are real wines, made in small quantities with care and passion. I have to agree that the ‘05 Rocks and Gravel wasn’t their best effort. Haven’t tried the Syrah. The ‘05 Shell & Bones (Roussanne/Viognier) is very good.

Keep bringing us great wines from unsung regions like the Languedoc. This is where your show really brings tremendous value. Of course it’s not as much fun when the wine sells out right after the show airs!

    GV,
What are your thoughts about Thomas Jones’ comments about Brett?
I thought he, Brett, looked like he really didn’t care during the game. I’d be surprised if he comes back next year.
Nice show. Thanks for stressing value wines. I can’t do the $25+ wines anymore.

  124. January 2, 2009

    Steve

Gary, thanks for all you do, and I wish you and your family the best in 2009. Looking forward to watching all your shows this year. Drinking a Jip Jip Shiraz/Cab tonight, only about $13, liking it quite a bit, wondering what you think. Who do you like in the playoffs? I’m a bit lost, since my Redskins are gone and your Jets are gone…do I pull for a Manning superbowl (Colts vs. Giants)? As long as the Ravens don’t win, I’m OK…

  125. January 2, 2009

    Dr. Horowitz

Yeah, don’t expect anything exciting from KJ unless it’s from their 3rd tier Estate series. Using “Reserve” on anything but your best is lame. KJ is even lamer for trying to make “Grand Reserve” sound better than Vintner’s Reserve.

But, they got huge PR with Obama…

I’m already noticing a trend due to economic woes:
Lots more value wines being sold. Pretty close to the same amount of covers (dinner entrees) but more QPR drinkers.
That’s ok, I started pushing the wine list that way in the last quarter of 2008.
New yrs eve crowd the same. Lots of btls but kept it around $100 as opposed to $200 ++ in past yrs.
Ole Miss fans partied hard at our restaurant. Spent lots of cash. Thanks for stopping in!!!
Still gotta say: “Get your guns up!” (Tech had a great yr)

Absolutely love the show. Very, very excited for you and your success. Thank you for all you have done for us and the wine business in general. On the topic of To Do’s for 2009, I hope to see more restaurant list reviews. As a server, representing a solid, albeit Pacific NW and French dominated list, I am always curious to see how ours holds up to all the others.

Again, thank you very much Gary!

Happy New Year, brother! I COMPLETELY agree with some of your plans for 2009:

    -focusing on value
-more blind tasting (with 2 paper bags over your head while watching the Jets)
-more “nerdy” wine info eps with an eye towards classic old world plays

Can’t wait to see what 2009 brings! I’m still here, just as loyal as ever. I wish your family the best in the new year as well. Cheers.

Hi Gary only discovered your show about a month ago, loving it and gonna spread the word to fellow Brits who are loving the wine like me; keep up the good/crazy work! Question of the day for you: how does wine generate heat in the mouth? I see you don’t seem to like this happening when you try wine (white). Also; have you tried the following?: 2007 “Devil’s Rock” Riesling, Germany (Pfalz). It’s a steal here in England for £5.49. Lovely citrus crispness etc, would love to know what you think. Have a good 2009, Tom, Plymouth, England (newly converted veyniak)

Another wonderful year at Wine Library TV. Been a little late on catching up with ep’s, hence a sad lack of comments from this old school Yorkshire Vayniac. Must try harder in 09. A belated but heart felt Happy New Year to all!

Petaluma Riesling and oysters – great combo & top choice Gary. My wine moment – it’s 1979 and we have just caught some flatheads in Port Phillip Bay off Rosebud, cut our own chips (English style, not thin French Fries) and drank a bottle of Petaluma.

Thank you and your team a bucket load of great episodes during 2008…..looking forward to many more sublime viewings over 2009.

I certainly think that todays episode shows the naviety of consumers and lack of education in the market when there are so many great value plays out there. Gary V – you certainy fill this gap!

A prosperous 2009 for you and your family (and the family of WLTV).

I know I’m a little late but I was with you for #600 along with the wines. it brought our family together for something very fun. AND my mom pulled out rubarb (not a huge winer) about 3 seconds before you said it and I almost pissed my pants. keep rocking, and thanks.

I like that you’re breaking the extra bottle out for the New Year show! Neat wines, and telling wines! This was a perfect example of how ratings don’t matter (at least to some degree!). I’m looking forward to the blinds, the values, and the really high end wines (that I’ll never drink, but can experience through you) in 2009!

    Happy New Year!

Gary, thanks for the show on value wines. “long time listener, first time caller” etc. etc. This is the first show I’ve seen in ‘09 so thought i should comment. I really like the 2005 Edmunds St John Gravel & Rocks, but do agree with you that the 2004 is a bit better.

    Keep up the great show.

Oh, btw, tried a very nice Montenegran wine by Plantaze called Vranac. Saw it at a local store for about $14. Was inspired to give it a shot by your Croatian episode.

I have to first apologize…. i have been a super-lurker! I have been watching since around episode 100 and can count the number of comments i have made on one hand!

It is my New Years Pledge (not resolution, resolutions are made to be broken…) to comment on every single show in 2009! Some comments might be a little late, like this one (i usually watch at work, hehe) but they will be there.

    Gary,

Happy New Year, and thanks for all the great insights.

    A comment and a request…

I’ve had the Catena on multiple occasions. Overall, your review of it was pretty close to my view, but I perhaps like it a shade more. It has been a reliable house chardonnay for guests less serious about wine looking for a reliable glass of chardonnay, though it rather limited.

It’s been very useful when you tell us that wine x drinks like a $$$ wine, and you then drop a few names for comparison at a quality level. Please continue to do that. It helps us compare to wines we know. Great stuff.

Have a great ‘09. Wine Library TV rocks.
