A HUGE congratulations to you. And a here here to bringing in the little known varietals of Italy. I think that some of the best bargains to be found are the ones most people don’t know about. Teroldego, Carignano, Nero d’Avola, Cesanese, Lambrusco, Negroamaro for the reds and Falanghina, Pecorino, Trebbiano for the whites…they’re all worth exploring when looking to save $$$$$!

    Hey Gary,

Big Congrats on your Big News!

As a new parent myself, I know what you are going through. Listen to Lawrence Leichtman advice above, bank sleep, was hell until my daughter started sleeping longer than 5 hours at a time. My own bit of advice is to streamline your home and work life as much as possible before the due date, as afterwards, all free time will vanish!

QOTD….GV, if you want to get a decent night’s sleep, have your wife breast feed. It’s a great way to force late night feeding responsibilities onto the wife. Other than that, you’ll find that your life will not change much. Once the little one starts crawling; however, the changes come fast and furious.

  79. January 13, 2009

    Dana Fosburgh

Congrats to you and your wife. I’m a hockey guy, so to use an analogy, there’s a big difference between a guy with a big shot and a guy who can finish. Here’s to you finding the back of the net. You lit the lamp, my man ! All the best.

CONGRATULATIONS Gary and Lizzie. If you think you know love now, you ain’t seen nothin’!

QOTD: As a father of three, there are many pieces of advice that will come your way, but mine is to be patient and embrace the talents and interests of your child(ren) so that they may grow into their “own skin”.

  82. January 13, 2009

GV — MAZEL TOV!!! I am so happy for you and Lizzie!

But here’s the important question — if it’s a boy, obviously, the tradition is to help calm the baby down before the bris by letting the baby suck on a wine-soaked rag.

So, if that’s the case, what (kosher) wine will be the first to touch your son’s lips?

(I’d go with the Grand Vin du Castel — Kosher Israeli Bordeaux-variety blend). Please don’t let it be the usual garbage!

  85. January 13, 2009

    Congrats Gary and Lizzie!!

Can’t wait to see the MiniVee on the thundershow.

Congratulations Gary & Lizzie. If the kid has half the energy of it’s Dad you will never sleep again ;-)

QOTD: Try not to miss anything. Your kids are only 1 or 2 or 3 once or have their first band concert or race their first pinewood derby car in cub scouts or have their first dance recital or sing that solo in their high-school choir concert or score the winning touchdown or strike out at the bottom the the 9th with the winning run on third or …

I think your gonna be a great Dad!!!!

    Congrats!

QOTD: “Just Because” and “Because I Said So” are never acceptable answers. Always take time to answer your child’s questions and if you dont know the answer, then use it as an opportunity to do a little research together. (Of course answering the question “Why Do You Think?” is a great learning tool as well, as long as you still answer the question after)

    Congrats Gary!!!

QOTD: My daughter is 16 months old and ever inspiring. I would say just live everyday with your child like it is the best day ever. Because it is!

Congratulations, Gary!!! My advice to you and your wife is to read to your child everyday! I am a reading specialist in Mystic, CT and it’s the kids who haven’t been read to and who haven’t discovered to joy of books that I provide remedial service to. Make sure when you create your baby registry add Borders or one of those great book stores in your area to the list!
A book is a gift that keeps on giving! I wish you both the best!
    Claudia from CT

PS I love your show and am learning sooooo much about wine.

    big congrats!
    QOTD:
While yer wife’s pregnant, get her anything she wants, anytime she asks for it and be ready to accept that everything is your fault. Always. She’ll love you even more.

Once the kid is here, the above still applies, but also: get the kid anything the kid wants/ needs, anytime it is asked (or yelled for). At least for the first year. When the kid can start asking you with words, you can start to make judgements on his/her requests.

Spend every moment you can with the kids. It’s like SciFi the way time suddenly passes more quickly once you have a kid. It’s a huge cliche, and all the parents with grown kids will tell you they grow up in a blink of an eye, but it’s the truth.

    That’s more than one thing…sorry

Congratz Gary to you and Lizzie. Such a special time of your lives.
I have three sons, two of which have shared with us their son and daughter.
Lots of people will give you lots of advice.
Shake your head affirmatively, and move on.
    You come from good stock.
You will instinctively know what to do, and how to do it, because your upbringing has prepared you.
A big cheer to you and your family!

  140. January 13, 2009

    Jeff

Congrats Gary (& Lizzy of course)! So when your child is born will he/she pop out like a champagne cork on New Year’s Eve or will a little help with a good wine opener kit, to get that huge head out, be necessary?:) Seriously though, enjoy fatherhood no matter what it brings…

QOTD: Now kids here. However… Kids are like wine, you never know what they are like until you uncork them and share them with friends and family. 97+ points announcement buddy! Share your kid with the world, give them that decanted love and their personality (flavor) will come out!

Thanks for bringing the Thunder Lizzie! :)

Being a dad is the best! Start thinking about your wine for their 21st birthday. I have a ‘99 Lafite for my son and a ‘03 Leoville Barton for my daughter. Hopefully they will be drinking beautifully when their time comes. Enjoy because time will start to fly.

QOTD: Don’t spoil them. It is hard not to give them what they want!

    Fantastic News!!! Congratulations!

Be sure to do all the crazy travel now, cause soon you’re gonna have to stay home and change diapers ;)

QOTD: I’m not a parent, yet, but have been a child, and taught a few to boot. My advice is to always love your child regardless of their personal life decisions. Feelings of disappointment should never last more than a day (hopefully you aren’t presented with many situations that make you feel this way). Values change with time, and you have to trust your child to do what’s best for him/her and his/her loved ones.

Hey Gary V. I sent you an @ reply on twitter, but you asked for a comment so little V can see it one day. So… Hey little V. I’m calling you that because as of this comment, I don’t know if you’re a boy or a girl, but I do know one thing. You’re gonna have one crazy dad! Hopefully when you’re older you’ll be going to see your dad’s team (that he owns BTW) win the superbowl. Now wouldn’t that be something? Anyway, congrats Gary and have fun being a dad.

  155. January 13, 2009

    Lizzy 43

Congrats to you and Lizzy, there’s no better news than that!! My daughter and son were on the thunder show a year and a half ago when viewers sent in wine tastings and mine did juice, it was silly stuff, they are the joy of my life and the best thing I have done in my life is to be a parent. My only advise to you is think about what you say before you say it, kids listen and remember. It seems like the rest will come natural to you. God Bless!!

Praise to the new born King of Wine-dom. Congrat! Vee-fam.

After years of desire, passion, thought, work and purposing powering your SON will be born. (I’ve never been wrong in picking the boy/girl thingy). It is beautiful to see, especially from the fathering side such a passion and purposeful intent in creating a child. So sad so many babies are after thoughts. Little V is already king. And I thank you for allowing us into your secrete place.

I wish for you and yours – a billion buckets full of favor and grace in all you do.

As father of ‘the wife’ (Lizzie), huge supporter of ‘the husband’ (that’s you Gary!), and soon to be Grandfather, a few quick comments:
    1. Read every comment made so far… they are ALL accurate
    2. You WILL get back whatever you GIVE
    3. Remember the drinking age… no wine dispensing to newborns
    4. Can you imagine what social networking will really be by the time your 1st chilod is 10, 15, 20 years old!
    5. Where’s my case of ‘95 Latour!!! (did someone really drop the entire case!)

    Dear Baby V,

I know it’s hard to have these 7300 followers on twitter at your age, and the 300 emails a day aren’t helping.
But be kind to your parents, and especially to your father : it’s not easy to run the Jets !
And remember it’s never to early to start hustling :)

    Cheers,

    Etienne

Yeah! That is wonderful news, congratulations!! My wife gave birth to our first little one on Dec.26th 2008, and it is totally amazing. Gary, I wanted to give you an apology: I am an old Vayniac that was without my computer for the last six months or so and was unable to view the thunder show daily. I truly missed it and am looking forward to catching all the shows I missed. Thanks and Congrats to you and your wife!!!!!!!

    Congratulations Lizzy and Gary,
As the father of 6 amazing kids (ages 13-25, 3 boys, 3 girls) I have to tell you what a ride it’s been! Think of it, why just excel at the size and quality of a wine store when you can cause even an even greater long-term impact with a whole bunch of spectacular little Garys and Lizzies. Think of it as repopulating the world with terrific people.

How did we manage this? Even though the kids are a huge part of our lives, we kept in mind that more than any other thing, our kids need their parents to be in love.

    -Peter & Jan

QOTD: Follow your bliss! My kids did and one has a PhD in culture and media from NYU and the other who was a wine maker at one time is now working on a PhD at Washington State in Sociology. I never would have pointed them in those directions.

    Gary,

as the parent of a 4 year old, I will give some advice to the vayner nation: expect to see much less of Gary Vee. The daily shows (mostly) that he spoils us should be cherished now cause once that baby is born….

not to sound all doomsday, but i speak from experience.

  187. January 13, 2009

I can’t WAIT for baby V! My two older brothers both had baby boys in 08! I wish many blessings on you and yours in this wonderful time of celebration! Baby V, if you ever read this, know that your papa is a good man who brings joy to a lot of people!

  189. January 13, 2009

    J Crazy

Yo, as a kid and son for 29 years of my life I have to say that I had/have awesome parents. One thing I always admired about them (even though they divorced and don’t get along now) is that they were always unified on a parental front. I used to ask my mom for a snack when I was little and she’d always tell me, “Go ask your father”. So, I’d ask my dad and he’s say, “ask your mom.” I thought I could outsmart them so I told my dady, “mom already said yes but told me to ask you.” Then my dad would call in my mom and ask her if that was true. And man oh man did I get it when I lied. Um, yeah, what was the question again?

  190. January 13, 2009

    Bobby Bo

Congrats to the whole Vaynerchuk Family!
Great show. I love Teraldego and hopefully this episode will get more people trying it and we will see more in the US.

    Congratulations! That is great news!

  192. January 13, 2009

    my2cents

    Congrats on the news!

As a dad of an amazing 6.5 yr old boy it is easy to say that being a dad will rip your face off every day!

I must have been one of the first to watch this episode but couldn’t post a reply. I pretended that was because I was first. Haha now it’s what,,,165

My little tid bit is to say when it comes to the child’s name don’t tell anyone what you are thinking. They will almost always give you a funny expression and say something like “that sounds like a grown ups name not a baby”. Well duh they grow into grown ups don’t they.? This advice may go astray in the case of family names being handed down ect.. but if you are just making it up, don’t tell anyone and then wait until you see the whites of their eyes. At least it worked for us.

Good show as well. I somehow enjoy when Gary doesn’t like a wine. It keeps it real. Thanks for coming home and giving us all the heads up on where your head will be at for the next decade.

  193. January 13, 2009

    MrTaz

Congratulations Gary and Lizzie! Having kids is probably the greatest joy in life. (I’m sure you’ve heard this before, and will hear it many more times, but…) Cherish every moment–it seems like forever when you’re in it, but it’s over in an instant.

Congratulations to both of you, Gary and Lizzie!

Children are a gift that keep on giving. What a way to start a new year. All my best wishes to the new family.

    Much love!

I have no children of my own, so no wise words except that 1+1=3.
A mother plus a father makes a beautiful addition.

QOTD. Bring the same passion you have for wine, to the wonderful job of parenting and you will live a good full life.

  205. January 13, 2009

    Adam J

QOTD: As I mentioned in my earlier comment, we are brand new parents, but our piece of advice is that if its a boy; cover up his little “parts” with a towel while you are changing him- we have gotten shot in the face several times already! Congrats again!

  206. January 13, 2009

    Hartelijk gefeliciteerd!

    Gary,
Is this not a great feeling? My girlfriend is 3 months pregnant and it will be our first child aswell. I wish you and your family all the best of luck.

PS I assume 2009 will be a good vintage somewhere in the world. I wonder what I will need to buy…

Hate to be a downer, but f*ck Henry Ford.

  208. January 13, 2009

    HandsomeReg

    Congratulations Gary!!!

    Good show.

Advice: Take it one day at a time. Enjoy year one and then enjoy year two. Years one and two goes by so fast. Take still pictures and videos like crazy. Give yourself a pat on the back every once in awhile. Oh, and don’t beat yourself up too bad when you make mistakes. Just learn from them. Nobody’s perfect. Make yourself more available at home and help out. Lizzy will need the break and will appreciate you more than you can ever imagine. Don’t put work ahead of home.

And keep TVs, computers, etc. out of the kids rooms.

    Best wishes to you both.

  209. January 13, 2009

    Jocelyn

Congratulations! This is awesome. Don’t forget to give your wife a gift in exchange for the wonderful one she will be giving you.

    Congratulations Gary!
QOTD: My only advice would be; Don’t stop at one … have at least two kids. Enjoy them, spoil them and most of all talk with them.

  211. January 13, 2009

    MattieJ

Congrats, GV. Personally, I think you’ll make a great pops… I get a funny feeling you’ll give the little tyke everything he/she needs, not everything they want!!!

  212. January 13, 2009

    RobRx

Advice-Remember, even though your kids are very like you, they are not necessarily given the same gifts as you. Let them follow their passion. Even if it is something you are not excited by.

  213. January 13, 2009

    Jeff H

QOTD: It is more perspective, a bit of a play on the “changing your life forever”, and you won’t truly appreciate it until after your child is born, but…

Hi Gary, I am a Costa Rican guy who loves wine and I´d been following your show for a long time now. I started in Episode 102, or something like that.
I am writing to you until now due to the really good news. I have only one child but I think it was the most wonderful thing that had happen to me in my life.
Congratulations from my heart and, as we say in my Country: -”Pura vida!!” (Pure Life)
    Sincerely,
    Jorge

i am so happy for the two of you gary! it is the best experience of your life. my 3 year old is the one- litterly who gets me outt of bed each day. BTW- i don’t think that it is cool that people mail you about when will you have kids, that is quite personal IMHO.
BUT, you are right, your life will change dramatically. 100% sure and it will make you a better person ( a little more tired too : )

    bravo!

QOTD- Savor every moment of it. They grow up FAST!!!!!

  222. January 13, 2009

    Matt

Take it all in baby! The checkups, the ultrasounds, the classes, and of course, you gotta be there for the delivery! There is absolutely nothing like it. Once you see that little person, the switch will be flipped inside of you and you will no longer live for yourself…

    Congrats!

  223. January 13, 2009

    Chris Rufkahr @freewinetasting

Gary, you should let your Vayniacs (I spelled it correctly this time) suggest names for BabyVee!!!

Will there be an @BabyVee Twitter account?

I think you should name your baby “V”, just V – no period, not an initial for something else. Just V

    V Vaynerchuk

That is cool!!! What do you think?

  224. January 13, 2009

    Selena

Way to bring the Thunder Gary!!! What a way to start out a new year!

Congratulations Gary! I’m so excited for you! Being a parent is the most amazing gift ever! I am pregnant with my second baby (Due June 16th) right around the time your little one is due! How exciting! Can’t wait to hear if it’s a boy or girl! We are having a girl (already have a little boy.) I actually have a hard time watching WLTV lately because I sure miss my wine and you make me crave it!!! By the way I live in Vegas and feel the need to thank you for gambling away your money while you were here this weekend…it keeps me from having to pay state taxes. Ha ha! Congrats again!

This is wonderful news and serious congratulations are in order. For a guy who has such strong passions, I’d love to see you when the moment comes. I predict your current passions will pale in comparison. Seriously… congratulations. You’re gonna be a Daddy!!!

  232. January 13, 2009

    BobZ

Congratulations! I know that you’re already a family guy, but you’re about to discover what that REALLY means.

QOTD: Remember that everything is a phase. Take a lot of pictures, especially when you don’t really feel like it.

  233. January 13, 2009

    K Spengler

Gary, we’ve been waiting for the day you would announce this, tons of congratulations to you and Lizzie. Parenthood has the potential to make you and Lizzie into incredible people. QOD: Do not doubt for one moment during these next 21 +++ years, the profound impact you have on your childs development. They remember your tone, your intent, as well as your words and actions. Who they become has it’s basis in your interaction with them every day.
    I couldn’t be happier for you, …cheers!

  234. January 13, 2009

    Jay T

Yea a little Baby V! Congrats to Gary the entire Vaynerchuk family. Life as you know it will soon be over — for the better!

    My parental advice?

Enjoy every minute of every day. They grow up WAY too fast.

  235. January 13, 2009

    Fedor

What a shocking development. Congratulations on the thunder child, if the kid has half the spark you do I’m sure it will electrify your life to a new level! I better stop :) Grats Again!

    Phil (marty6001)

    Gary,
Great news on todays show!! Good luck and thanks so much for sharing it with us all… Pass some vibes our way as Kelly and I have been trying for a few years now.

  237. January 13, 2009

    Owen

Congratulations, Gary and family! Baby V – you’ve got a great role model to look up to and to learn from. I can’t wait to see what happens! I’m sure that Thunder will be brought!

  238. January 13, 2009

    Dominus

A heart-felt congratulations to you and Lizzie though a tad bummed I did not make your “regular viewer” email about the Huge announcement. :(

That being said, it is a monumental occasion.

As for the show, I’m surprised the Don Nicanor did not fare well. Love the bottle and label.

QOTD: I probably screwed up more than enough raising my young man so I may not be the one to give any advice but I will say you will love this child more than you could ever imagine. I guess my only advice would be to provide him/her with as many experiences as possible, especially travel.

  239. January 13, 2009

    Mari

HUGE Congratulations, Gary!!! I really like KSpengler’s comment — teach by example and just be there. Have dinner with your family every night. Keep your sense of humor, and READ to your kids every day (The Oxford Companion to Wine, perhaps?)

  240. January 13, 2009

    Dan Manu

    congrats man!

  241. January 13, 2009

  242. January 13, 2009

    Keith Brown

I hope you get 1000 comments for this episode. Congratulations! That’s huge. In fact, you probably still have no idea how huge. Oh boy. QOTD: You cannot be their “friend”, you have to be a parent, and that means discipline (with love), but you MUST ALWAYS communicate, be consistent, and follow through. Somehow, I don’t think you’ll have a problem with any of that.

  243. January 13, 2009

    E dog

Hey Gary !!! That s amazing news ! Congratulations to you and Liz ! I m really happy for the two of you :)

    QOTD: haven’t got any kids… I m only 22. lol. But I got 2 pieces of advice.

First: I know you were born in the USSR, do you speak Russian or any other language than English? If you do, you should bring your kid/kids up in 2 languages and 2 cultures. I was brought up speaking French and English, and I m now fluent in both, that s all thanks to my clever parents!

Second: my advice would be to spend as much time as you can with the Vayner-little one. I was at my gran ma’s with my brother last week and she read us some stories she wrote in her diary, about us when we were kids, and seriously… We laughed all evening. Kids may be a full time job, but they are well entertaining !

I think you ll have a lot of fun ! Again, congrats man !

  244. January 13, 2009

    Jordan

Congrats Gary! Best wishes to you and the new fam! Great show as always. Im gonna have to go out and try a Teroldego. Seems interesting.

Congrats! Congrats! Sure it’s not twins??
Fatherly advise from a father of three boys…. Get plenty of rest, offer to help as much as possible around the house,, learn how to do laundry (the right way). Get the little person into a sleeping pattern that allows you to live a normal life,,, none of this getting them to bed at 11PM. Accept your families and in laws offers to babysit whenever possible, read to them every chance you get and teach them to be as giving and full of life as you are!
    Best wishes!

  251. January 13, 2009

Congrats/mazel tov to both of you. This event will make a 100 point wine look like nothing.
QOTD: As a proud parent of two adults, both older than you, listen, listen and listen more. Listen to your child, your parents, your in-laws and yourself. Weigh everything before you act too hastily. Spoken words can never be taken back. And get yourself a good camera for recording his/her life.

  256. January 13, 2009

    Tony

Gary, Congratulations! There’s nothin better than being a Dad.

QOTD: Just enjoy every moment – with your wife and your baby (coming soon).

  257. January 13, 2009

    Bathus

Your first baby; my first comment.

From one wine philosopher to another, I just want to say: It’s a dern good thing you don’t mind that poopy smell! Seriously, you are now a fully-fledged member of the cycle of life–which is a scarey and beautiful thing.

QOTD: Advice for raising kids: I ain’t got no advice–because you’ll just have to figure it out for yourself anyways–except, okay, maybe there is this one little piece of advice, which is: Love will cure a lot of mistakes, thank goodness, because we all make plenty.

  258. January 13, 2009

  262. January 13, 2009

    MikeyB

Congrats Gary!! Best advice ever – buy a “sling” for your wife. You can get it at any baby store. Lets her carry baby all snuggled up with hands free so you can do stuff, also can take baby out anywhere even in cold weather cause they’re all snuggled up next to warm body. Seriously, you’ll thank me.

  263. January 13, 2009

    Andy Johnson

Congrats! I guess all that practice paid off!

  264. January 13, 2009

    guymandude

    Big Congrats!
QOTD; you’ll look back one day and say it was never in what I did that brought
the most enjoyment, but actually in the doing.

  265. January 13, 2009

    Diana LeRoi-Schmidt

Congratulations Gary and Lizzy! You’ll be an awesome Dad.

QOTD: I don’t have any children yet, but I’ve always aspired to provide for my child that which my parents taught me. Be empathetic, listen, love and respect yourself and others.

  266. January 13, 2009

Congrats, sir – your nigh on limitless passion and energy will certainly make you an awesome Dad.

    (PS: Great episode too!)

  277. January 13, 2009

    Matthew

    Mazal Tov!!

My advice… get involved. Be there for your little one. Restrict access to the TV and gaming systems for at least 2 years (at minimum, prevent them from the bombardment of advertisements and only let them watch pre-approved recorded video).

Listen to your little one. They can communicate without speech. Watch their expressions. Pay attention. Enjoy every moment.

  278. January 13, 2009

    Andrew

Gary!!!!! Congratulations Man!!! I hope someday I will get to experience the same emotions you are feeling. My Birthday is May 27th so someday we might have to do a joint Birthday Party!

    AWESOME…

The baby Gary Vee announcement may have trumped the Notorious BIG movie opening this Friday.

Let’s look at my Top 5 names (full names – assuming a boy for now):

    1. Notorious Gary Vaynerchuk

    2. Gary Vee Vaynerchuk, Jr.

    3. Randy Macho Man Vaynerchuk

    4. Mott Vaynerchuk (no middle name)

    5. Thomas Brady Vaynerchuk (to help you soften your feelings for the PATS)

VERY, VERY happy for you. So is Nhan. And she wants to know, “Is Gary really going to Brooklyn to watch Notorious BIG?”

  281. January 13, 2009

Gotta love the Mr. Sketch markers! Put ‘em on the list of things to pick up before the little one arrives There was one I didn’t like… maybe black (licorice)? or maybe it was the brown one (Cinaman?) Anyway, great reference.

  283. January 13, 2009

Have fun giving those diapers a Sniffy Sniff.

And now Julius doesn’t have to keep counting down on the numbers thread. ;)

  289. January 13, 2009

    Bob in Nashville

QOTD: Don’t read any pregnancy/infancy books. They will drive you nuts learning about all the things that could go wrong. Our parents and grandparents did this whole baby thing without obsessing over it and we turned out okay.

  290. January 13, 2009

    manonthemoon

    Congrats GV and Lizzy.

Not a father, but as an Uncle I can say, trust your parents advice. They raised you and you turned out alright.

    Chris

CONGRATS GARY! Though I didn’t get an e-mail .. I just came home now and saw the updated podcast in iTunes.

Anyway, that’s wonderful news I KNEW you were joking about the Keynote and I had a feeling it was about you being a Dad.

I guess we’re going to have to wait 21 years now until you bring your child onto the show to taste wines eh? :D

  292. January 13, 2009

    Bob in Nashville

Also, we here in Nashville hope that the baby hangs on long enough that you’re still able to make it here for Ete du Vin!

  293. January 13, 2009

    Chase Conwy

Congrats Gary!!!! I have been a long time fan and couldn’t think of a better day to stop my “lurking” and leave a comment. You will be a great dad. Good luck and get ready for the best time of your life.

    Congrats!

  295. January 13, 2009

    BCWineAreIn

Congrats Gary!!! All my best to you and Lizzy. I bet you’re thinking what 2009 vintage you’ll keep for your baby when they turn 21. Maybe a show in the future, 2-3 years, on what wines to store away for your little one.

  296. January 13, 2009

    SCOTTYL

Gary Congrats!!! QOTD:It will be tough with your workload but be as much of a “hands on” parent as you can.
Why is it that CDP’s shut down in the 3-6 year range but their vacqueras and gigondas cousins usualy don’t?

  297. January 13, 2009

    Hido53

    Gary -

Okay, finished watching the episode. Good show, but completely overshadowed by the announcement of your impending life-changing event . . . and justly so!

QOTD: Diaper changing (I fully expect you are going to do your part as a good father!) – now don’t take this wrong! but they (babies) aren’t as fragile as you think they might be . . . when changing a diaper quickly and without undue stress to you and the baby, use a firm (not tight) grip to hold and maneuver the little one during the process.

  298. January 13, 2009

    Cris

    Congratulations, Gary!!!

  299. January 13, 2009

    Kirk AKA: (slave2thevine)

Congrats! My advise would be to enjoy your time with your family, work 10 hours less a week, and remember that both you & Lizzy will need your time out on your own. Make time for a “date night” (you don’t have to drink the wine)…but do get your alone time out on the town once a week.

  300. January 13, 2009

    ElizObih Frank

Kudos to you and Lizzy for the new heartbeat in your home! Congratulations are in order and thanks for sharing with us. My advice would be to catch up on sleepZzzzzs now/anytime you can grab some and ramp up that keen sense of humor you have. You will need both!
Awesome keynote presentation at the Inman News RE Connect event and I still laugh out loud when I recall your comment “embrace your DNA!” and other Gary Veeisms from that inspired moment. Thank you!
High fives for your spot-on review of Chateau Saint Jean; my local wine store recommended it to me a couple of weeks ago as fantastic value for the price and they , like you, were right.
I love to collect, drink, and share good wine with friends and family so I’m glad to add your expertise to my favourite past time. Keep it coming Gary Vee ;-) Cheers & Thanks!

  301. January 13, 2009

    Mike Nally

Congratulations to you both! Amazing that you were able to keep your secret for so long. Good man.

My advice to you as a father of one beautiful daughter? Take the time every day to see the world through your child’s eyes. It will fill your soul in a way you cannot imagine.

  302. January 13, 2009

    PeterT

QOTD: Make sure that you, Lizzie and both of your families celebrate and cherish every single moment with your child as it will fly by faster than you can ever imagine.

My wife and I have a 19 year old son who is our greatest achievement in life.

  303. January 13, 2009

    debnj

Cherish each day with your child; they grow up so quickly and each stage constantly changes how you look at life. You’ll be a fabulous parent because you’re always open to learning new things–and that’s a dimension children bring to your family.

  310. January 13, 2009

Way to go Gary V, now a father to be!

  312. January 13, 2009

    Anthony L.

Great news, Congrats. I have 3 little ones age 4, 3 & 2,the best piece of advice I can give. is that you will be tempted to worry about every little move your kid makes, but don’t, they are a lot stronger and durable than a new parent thinks.

BTW where is the Belated B-day shout out for my daughter Nicole? LOL.

  313. January 13, 2009

WOW!! HUGE CONGRATS!! This really will change you both forever. I have so many tibits, but I will try to refrain from all those already posted (which are all great BTW). First, know you WILL make mistakes and that children are fairly resiliant. Just learn from them and avoid repeats.

Secondly, READ to your child as soon as they can be propped up in your lap and see the pictures (about 4 months) EVERY DAY! Teach them about anything they are interested in, don’t assume they are too young to learn. This fosters love for learning.

Lastly, be very educated about safety. Become an expert on your own child and NEVER take them anywhere in a vehicle without the APPROPRIATE car seat, properly fitted. Safety first!! The best of luck and health to you, Lizzy, and the little one!!

    3. Early years are easy compared to the teenage years. GET READY NOW!!!!

  336. January 13, 2009

    Todd S

One thing I have noticed is, we are all born with a very short “mood pendulum”. You do not notice it growing in length and weight as you get older, but you will notice it in your child. The interesting part is, they will take you with him on those swings. You will glow with happiness when they start to smile, but when they cry and you can’t figure it out, it will take you down.

With my son it was pretty easy, nine out of ten times he fussed, he was hungry, even when you were sure that could not be it. ALWAYS CHECK THAT FIRST! This was consistent for six months or more. As they get older they develop more and more things to fuss about. But, what you get in return is more and more interaction and it keeps getting better.

Lastly, everything changes quickly. When your child develops some difficult behavior it will pass. When they start to do something that you love, it to will pass.

Enjoy the ride and start bottling sleep.

Have fun with your children…and try to have dinner together every day.

    I know it is a tired, old, over worked statement still;

QOTD. No kids here yet. But I hope you get to spend more time with the family and less time working and watching/thinking about sports, Gary! Even if you love those so much you probably love them more. And they will be well taken care off even if you slow down on “your brand”. But what do I know! ;)

    I’m happy for you!

    Congrats Gary and Lizzy…

QOTD: on being a Dad..(I’ve got three!) Just be you and constantly remember your Dad’s legacy in your own life. If you do that, your own legacy (along with your Dad’s) will naturally pass through generations.
I’m wondering how the world will do with another Vaynerchuk!

  379. January 13, 2009

    Curtis Ludlow

    Congratulations Gary!

    I love your shows!

First time I saw you I thought you were crazy. Now, I think you’re a crazy genius. Super inspiring every time you’re on.

One piece of advice for you and your kiddie kid.

    Wine in the baby bottle.

    Train that palate early! ;)

  380. January 13, 2009

    Terrance

Occasionally wondered about GV Jr. and now that we know he or she is coming congratulations. Good luck with everything and can’t wait to hear if it’s a boy or a girl.

  381. January 13, 2009

    Pete G

Big Congrats! The GV fam has begun. Now the big question is what wine are
you going to buy for the little one to cellar and eventually drink? Sounds
    like a QOTD to me. . .

  382. January 13, 2009

    Bellissimo

    QOTD:

I describe parenting as the most frustrating and rewarding thing I’ve ever done. Usually all within 5 minutes of each other. Try to keep that in perspective and cherish the time.

    Congrats

  383. January 13, 2009

    Swervin

Congrats to you and Lizzie! You are in for one fantastic ride.

QOTD: Go out together A LOT and sleep in on the weekends. It all ends May 31 (and the fun begins….)

  384. January 13, 2009

    Nic

Félicitations ! C’est une magnifique nouvelle pour vous deux !

  385. January 13, 2009

    Derrick Schommer

QOTD: Be patient, when you can’t take the crying anymore and it’s the middle of the night, take turns and let the other relax a bit. Once you get through the crying days you’ll get to the stages where they’re little hams, running around acting silly, singing and asking to wrestle.

Like me, you’re a busy guy, but remember that they don’t really understand it. Give them time each night to be with Dad and they’ll return the love 10-fold.

  386. January 13, 2009

    Keith

You’re obviously pumped about the news, you’ll be great parents.

  387. January 13, 2009

    chito

First and foremost LAUGH alot with them. Thats the easy one. The second one is alot tougher. Let them know you are not there to be their friend, but make them feel that they can trust you with anything. My very best to the both of you, I consider you my extended family and couldn’t be happier about the joyous news.
    Al

  388. January 14, 2009

    jlair

    QOTD: Two things.

Its all about controlling stimulation! I will relate that to wine so you can understand what I mean by controlling stimulation. If you were tasting a couple wines and one of them was a late harvest. You taste the late harvest last because if you dont you will over stimulate your palate. Any non late harvest you taste after will be overly bitter and tanic or unbalanced because the little amount of fruit and sweetness it would have had will not be there.
If you can relate that to everyday things in a child’s life then you will be golden!!!

Second, it is very simple. (it is a way of controlling stimulation) If they dont know it exists then they can never want it, cry for it, wine about it, or think they are going to die without it. Example: candy, soda, unhealthy snacks, things like that.

Take care Gary! Grats man! Kids are AMAZING!!!!!

  389. January 14, 2009

Congrats Gary!! I wish you and Lizzie all the health and happiness you both deserve! It’s a completely unreal experience being a parent!

QOTD: 2 things really….#1 – be a parent not a friend #2 – always, always listen when they talk. No matter what they are saying.

Gary congrats to you and Lizzy!!.. it was funny, I had gotten away from the show for a bit and I had just gotten back into it,and thought that I hadn’t heard anything about that..so it’s wonderful news…bit of advice..hmmm… don’t think it will happen with your lifestyle, but don’t forget to take some time for yourself in the future…dads need some “me” time too!!

  427. January 14, 2009

    David cole

Congratulations Gary and Lizzie! Your right that is a huge announcement! I’m sure it feels great, but I can tell you that the biggest most emotional moment will be the moment the baby arrives! If we could bottle that feeling, the first few minutes a baby arrives in this world and his or her parents see them the world would be a different place!

I’m sure your gonna be a great Dad! Good luck my friend!

  428. January 14, 2009

Congrats to Gary and Lizz on your new baby coming this year. I might suggest to you, to accept any offer of help you may get from any and all quarters, especially when people cook for you, because there will be days you will both be too tired to do it, and you will have to feed your child twice before you can feed yourselves once. I hope you both will get enough sleep, somehow. As for advice to your son or daughter when the time is right, I would suggest you say the same thing I say to my daughter, that in life you have to play the hand you have been dealt, and give your utmost effort and provide as much help as you when no matter what the circumstances, and be as appreciative as possible of all the help you receive in return.

Some days will be a lot more work than fun, but you will remember the fun.

    Andrew Lee

Congrats man!! I’m really happy for you and Lizzie. You’ll make a fantastic dad.

    Weston

qotd: remember your the father and to lay down the hammer when needed(in love). Because remember the reason why we discipline our child is because we love them we don’t want bad things to happen to them. And also to know that sometimes you just need to talk to them.

Every one seems to say their kid slept through the night within a month or two…My little madman took two and a half years. Being a father will be the most difficult yet most rewarding and challenging endeavor you will face in the coming years. Sleep now. Each year gets easier…. 10 now so can’t speak for the teen years. I’d do it again in a heartbeat. Phnl8

Congratulations to both Lizzie and yourself….wonderful news and came as a double suprise as I only just found out that my best friend is also expecting a baby soon – strange coincidence.

    Great show….great descriptions as always.

Now that the January sales have commenced is there any chance of looking at some ‘bin ends’ and tell us what varietals will still be tasting ok or if not better than first released – THAT WOULD BE A REAL VALUE FOR MONEY SHOW!

Got a vertical tasting of some 05 Bordeaux tomorrow so pretty geared up for that.

Great news. I’ve only been following you for a couple of weeks and then BAM: smack in the middle of this news. I wish you both lots of good times, it’ll be great. I hope you’ll have as much fun as I had when deciding what bottles you’re going to celebrate the birth with (Vintage Champagne? Bordeaux classified growths? Sassicaia?), together with friends and family. And what bottles of 2009 you’ll buy to keep untill his/her legal drinking age (”Will there be a vintage year in Port?”).

Congratulations! Definitely the happiest and most important moment in my life was when my daughter was born 17 and a half years ago–there’s nothing better! (I wouldn’t say she is a Vayniac, being under age and all, but what a coincidence when I was watching Wine Library TV one day and she caught a glimpse and said that the town she lives in in New Jersey is right near Wine Library and she has accompanied her dad there many times.) Wishing you and your wife lots of health and happiness!

    For the parents:
    1. Take time for yourself. Its good for you & the baby. Lizzie – make sure you go out at least once by the time the baby is 6 weeks. Seriously.
    2. When the baby sleeps, you sleep. No “catching up”, no cleaning. Sleep!
    3. When anyone offers help – accept it.

    For baby V:
    1. Your parents will always love you, no matter what. They may get angry at some things you do. But they will always love you.
    2. You can tell them anything, and I mean anything. They will always listen. They are the first place to get advice and answers. Really. Even when you’re a teenager. Especially when you’re a teenager.
    3. Read all the comments and signatures on that bottle of wine your parents had signed by friends and family at your birth. But do not drink it before you are 21.

    For the family:
You are in for the ride of your life! Hold hands, hang on & Enjoy!

Congrats to the whole extended Vaynerchuk family!

    Ozzy

DUDE, Congrats to you and Lizzie!!!

Advice: Sleep will be few and far between the first couple of months. It’s an adjustment period, but you’ll never be as tired as you are those months…

And whatever you do, DON’T WUSS OUT ON THE “GROSS” STUFF! Changing diapers, cleaning the kid up after meals, baths– I’ve got friends that have skipped on these and their wives and partners have never let them live it down. Besides, this is good bonding time anyway. It’s hilarious to see your kid’s face while you change their diapers….

Congrats! Now, it’ll be a Thunder Family!! (Oh, I bet Uncle AJ is so excited! All the fun of having a kid, with none of the responsibility. Kid spits up, hand ‘em back. Diaper change? Here ya go, Dad.)

  447. January 14, 2009

    Abe

    Congrats to you both! =)

QOTD: The baby above all else. Pay good attention to Lizzie aswell, her moods and feelings, as having a baby can be quite shocking (emotionally) for the mother.
In short, be there for them both and pay attention to their moods and needs.

  448. January 14, 2009

Gary, Congrats to you and Liz! I wish you health…always!

QOTD: Strive to “give better than you got”. In your case, that seems like an extremely high bar has been set! Major props to Sasha! Seriously, think of the things you would have liked to have had, OR had more of, and set that as your goal! No doubt; you will excel as a father! May God bless you and your family!

Oh yeah, just so you understand the un-written law up front: Mom ALWAYS wins! LOL!

    Justin in Spain

My first comment although have been watching for a few weeks. Had to say “enhorabuena” from Spain! Congratulations to you both. We have 6 year old twins and being a dad is truly amazing.

Boy, your life is about to change big time!! Enjoy it, although we do expect you to have rings around your eyes for every show from May onwards!

  453. January 14, 2009

    Steve Bjerklie

Kids need to know two things from the get-go. If they are confident about these two things, they will grow up well-adjusted and happy. One, they need to know, beyond any doubt, that both their parents love them unconditionally and above all else. Two, they need to know they are safe.

If more children in the world were confident in the knowledge of both these things, the world would be a much better and more peaceful place full of even more wonder than it already is.

  454. January 14, 2009

    Jay

Congrats on the new bundle of joy coming into your life. It will be a year next week since my little one came into the world (you even gave Marquis a shout out on the show). Nothing can prepare you for what you are about to experince. Having a child is truly is life changing experience. I am one of the lucky few who got to spend the first year of my childs life as a stay at home dad and I couldn’t dream of doing anything else now. It is the most rewarding thing I have ever done. Anyways enjoy being a dad and I pray that your little one doesn’t become a kicker instead of quarterback.

Congrats Bud, that is exciting news indeed. We are due in July for our second, so I share your excitement. My advice is get some rest while you can, and go out and spend as much quality time with Lizzy as possible. These two things will go away for a while, but it is well worth having a child.

Gary and Lizzie, I wish you both the best in this new segment of your lives. I know it will be a wonderful, fulfilling new adventure.

    dnzsmom

What a wonderful blessing, congratulations. My best wishes for a healthy child and painfree as possible delivery for Lizzie. My advice to you (and any new parent) is ‘dare to discipline’…kids need those rules, follow-through, structure, consequences and loving discipline starting at an early age. Kids need to be ‘heard’ and appreciated for who they are too. We are all such unique individuals and kids so need their parents to just ‘be there’ and love them as them! And most of all, just really trust your own instincts…it truly applies with innate parenting skills just as it does with knowing wines. :)

  464. January 14, 2009

    Rob B.

Congrats!!!, the show was great, lots of energy today. QOTD: Enjoy the little things, with kids everything is constantly changing, and can be hectic sometimes. Make sure you enjoy it all.

    FÉLICITATIONS!!! Gary,
As a father of two girls, my piece of advice to you would be – spend as much time as possible with them, cause time flies my friend. Your wine life will never be the same… alot of “BABY POOP ACTION” in future wine tastings might be part of your palate.

QOTD: BOTH of you read Baby Wise!!!!!! Our kids sleep from 9:30 at night until 9:30 in the morning because of the help this book gave us. Not to mention countless other things it helped with. But as you tell us to trust our own palette, only trust was it right for you and extract what you want from the book.

Best of luck with the new little one!

Gary, Congrats! You will realize as soon as your child is born that it is far and away the best thing that ever happened to you.

Two quick pieces of advice. Tell your child everyday that you love them, im my opinion you can’t show a you child too much affection. And enjoy every minute, they will grow up so fast.

    Eli2Tyree

Gary! long time no comment, but Congrats! Greatest experience God can give you. As the Father of an 8 year old daughter I would give you 1 piece of advice and something to think about. my advice…Time. You will feel the urge to work even harder and travel more as it is natural to feel this way as a provider to the family…. Dont get sucked in. try and limit your travel as much as feasable (I used to travel 60% of my job and now have dropped it to about 10%) and be home… not only for your child, but for yourself… you do not want to miss the important things in life that you will remember far more than any professional accomplishments. I would even consider taking 1 on 1 time often. Send Lizzy away on weekends with her friends to get away (nice break for her)and take advantage of bonding time a couple of days a year… It is totally worth it.

Something to think about … As I am moving back to Hunterdon County from PA, I can’t help but think you might want to get back out to the country from NYC… Granted there is no better place than NYC to live. But to raise kids in a great enviornment with the right influences, out of NYC may be a good choice… Come to think of it, Didnt your dad do that for you (Clinton? P- Burg? from Edison?).. Whats beter than the Flemington fair Cotton candy mixed with a little pig poop smell to bring a family together?

As far as the wines… I totally agree with you on the Don Nicor… HAd it and thought it sucked… Also have the La Cattura per Ian’s recomendation on my last WL trip… excited to try, but based on your notes I will cellar for a while.

    Congrats!

    Hi Gary.
You focus on the wine in front of you without paying too much attention to how others rate it, you have your own mind. This mindset has led you to great success. So do the same with your own unique, one of a kind child. A child unique even from it’s siblings to come. Follow your heart and instincts and you will be the “SUPERDAD” of a “SUPERCHILD”.Congratulations from a mom of 4 g-mom of 3. Happy day…

Congrats Gary and Liz; That is awesome news!
My wife just gave birth to our second child on Jan 2nd. and it’s so wonderful to be holding a baby again! I missed that. My first, Logan, is 5 now so it’s been a while.

Since you’re having a baby, this would be the perfect time to do a show on what wine to put away for your kids, maybe even other beverage suggestions as well, like scotch or whiskey…

QOTD: Patience! Besides unending love, the best virtue a parent can have is patience.

Thank you for the chance to leave my thoughts since I’m a dad (you met Mr. Max at your last live taping of the show in the store). I would offer up only this–whenever you can, any chance you get, look into your child’s eyes.

    Todd

    Congratulations, Gary!

As a father of two daughters, my advice is to pray for a son. :)

Actually, savor every moment. Ferris Bueller said it best, I think:

“Life moves pretty fast. You don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”

  517. January 14, 2009

    Sharon

That is truly a blessing! Congratulations to you both, and to your families!
QOTD: Hmmm well I think you will be a great Dad, Gary, but just remember that Baby V will inherit his or her parents’ qualities but will be his or her own unique person. Well, you won’t have to worry about that for a while, but :-) .

  518. January 14, 2009

    JayZee

    Congratulations to you and Lizzie!

    Four pieces of advice:

    1) Savor every moment for they grow up WAY too fast.
    2) Travel less – trust me on this one!
    3) Prediction: You will be too concerned with doing everything “right” with your first child. Don’t be. They are resilient. Also, you will try to protect your child from everything bad in the world (of course). You will fail. It is okay. They will learn from the bad as well as the good.
    4) In any situation that occurs, try not to overreact (you will anyway). :-)

Best of luck on the next phase of your life.

BTW, why was there no Thunder Show for almost a week?

    Congrats!!!
WTF: the Castellani La Cattura is already sold out?

QOTD: After your kid is born put some oil around the rear-end. The 1st couple of poops will be meconium and oil on the skin makes it easier to clean off the poop.

Side note: To increase you palate’s vocabulary, you may want to taste the meconium.

I wish you and your lovely wife nothing but the best. It is an amazing event on many levels. One day this little person does not exist, the next day you would give your life in a heartbeat to make sure that he/she is healthy and safe. Life goes into hyperdrive. My “babies” are now 24 and 20 but it still seems like yesterday we were taking them home from the hospital. My eyes are starting to well up, yours will do so soon. Congratulations.

    Gary, Lizzie and BabyV,

Congrats to all of you! That is wonderful news and I know you will be a wonderful family.

    Advice for parenting
-Use your own judgment and learn from your mistakes. Listen to peoples “advice” ….. and then do what you want. You are the parent and you learned from your awesome parents. So, you are ready!!!

Advice for child birth (this can be and emotionally charge “E” Ticket ride).
    A. For our first child I looked at it as we were a pair of rookies going into the super bowl. So we brought in a pro bowler in the form of a Doula (a fancy word for a birthing coach) to help us. This was the greatest money I have ever spent. In our case it gave us someone that is highly experienced, focused on our birth (the nurses and doctors were amazing but sometimes focusing on lots of different things happening) that could help us with decisions during the epic 24hr roller coaster ride that we went on. It also helped that she worked at the hospital so could “guide” us through the hospital “personalities”
    B. I wish someone had told us that Breast feeding is not always as easy and natural as you would think. So, if BabyV only Sniffy-Sniffs at the Mommy Wine Bar and doesn’t sip it – is okay – it might take a few days to get him/her on board. This sounds relatively simple but it is an emotional time and we have heard the same from many friends… it can be very difficult for the mom emotionally if they think that they cannot feed their own child.

But above all enjoy the ride!!! it is a wild one…

  524. January 14, 2009

    Mott T Hoople

My biggest piece of advice is to tell your kid(s) stories from the time they can understand them, and make sure that you and Lizzie are part of the plot. The stories can be complete fairy tales with no (or very little) basis in real truth – it’s OK to lie a little. My kids are now 18 and 16 and still talk about my goofy stories. This will form such an incredible bond you won’t believe it. They never considered me a fraud or anything once they were old enough to figure out that I was bullshitting them. They still love the stories.
    Try it, you’ll see.
Congrats – this is the greatest thing that will ever happen to you and your wife in your entire lifetime. Even the ‘61 Petrus that I was lucky enough to try about a year ago is nothing in comparison to the joys of parenthood.

  538. January 14, 2009

    Steve

Congrats…If you want my advice, enjoy each moment which precedes the teenage years because that’s when things change. This little human who was so close to you all of those years suddenly finds you very uncool. So there will be some detachment and its a bit of a shock. Someone made a comment about the baby’s first poop. Very sound advice. This is strange but we found ourselves looking forward to it. I think my wife applauded. Lastly, I would recommend not being too much of a disciplinarian. Something which sounds logical to you is often viewed as an invalidation by them and it could stifle their confidence.
    Best of luck.

  539. January 14, 2009

    Shir-Az

Gary, first off, congrats to you and Lizzy. My wife and I just had our first baby in November. My biggest piece of advise to you is to just enjoy the whole experience. Your baby’s birth will be something you will never forget.

  540. January 14, 2009

    Dayton

Congrats!!! We are also expecting, though not until August. I have a 2 year old boy and my advice to you would be to enjoy every moment of their childhood. I have found that if I concentrate on slowing down, removing distractions, and giving my child 100% focus when I get home from work, I am able to enjoy each wonderful moment. Wonderful news!!

  541. January 14, 2009

    Joe C

    Congrats!

As everyone has correctly said, enjoy every moment, time flies by. But I’d emphasize:

Spend MORE time and LESS money on your child. Especially when they’re young.

They’ll forget all the expensive stuff you bought them, but they’ll remember every time you took them camping or even a bike trip through the park.

  542. January 14, 2009

    Combsy

First, CONGRATS!!! QOTD: Be strict with your kids because they need boundaries and rules…but at the same time spoil them to death! If they get grounded, spend an awesome night at home playing games as a family and eating lots of ice cream. If they screw up at school, make sure they know it disappoints you but them take them to a movie or something. All about balance.

  543. January 14, 2009

    creating a Vayner-BABY!

  544. January 14, 2009

    Mike Calmus

    Congrats Gary!
Not a parent, but I have nephews. QOTD: Talk to them (as babies) as if they were just small adults. Don’t use baby talk. Talk lots (as if that will be a problem for you). Let the entire family be involved in the rearing.

  545. January 14, 2009

    Michael

Congratulations Gary! The best advice I can give you is make sure your child feels both you and Liz are his/her best friend and he/she can always come to you. It is a dangerous world out there, and the last thing a child needs is to feel alienated by his/her parents.

  546. January 14, 2009

    Leephus

Congrats! There has been nothing in life that means more than my two daughters, I am sure you will feel the same.

QOTD – For the next 10 – 12 years you will be the most brilliant father, protector, provider, and somewhere along the line you become the village idiot. Just ask your 15yr old. ;)

Best wishes to you and your family!

  547. January 14, 2009

    TimCub

    Congratulations, Gary!

QOTD: While I don’t have any kids of my own, I am a gay uncle to two wonderful children under the age of 4, and the best piece of advice I can give you is to be nice to your kids, answer their questions the best that you can, and never, ever stifle creativity in them.

QOTD: You can never get “time” back, remember not too work that you miss the best times…..Providing for your family isn’t always about providing money, its also about providing time…

    So YOU, with a little bit from ME, we are changing next generation. (and changing diapers) {now, imagine me throwing a pacifier at the camera}

also, “Chuck” Vaynerchuk is NOT a name you should consider

Mazal Tov! What beautiful news. Such a lucky baby to have parents a wonderful as you Lizzy. Your next book….”Throwing family friendly wine tasting parties”….or, “Teaching your child the difference between tannin and acidity”. Just kidding;)

QOTD: Always trust your instinct. You are your child’s advocate.

BTW, I’m still waiting for that second place prize from over a year ago.

  554. January 14, 2009

Congrats Gary!!! I don’t have kids so I don’t really have any advice to give, but I wish you and your wife the best of luck!

  555. January 14, 2009

    Alex M

Huge Deal! Congratulations to you both, it’s an awesome thing.

As far as parenthood goes I reckon it’s like wine – trust yourself to do the right thing.

But as you’re asking (find me a parent who doesn’t like giving advice):

My first piece of advice – listen to everything they say as if it’s important… it is.

The second piece of advice is something I got from a pamphlet in the hospital while taking my newborn for a ‘walk’, I still remember it 5 years on. It said “Fathers often work very hard so that they can provide their children with everything they could possibly want. When all they really want is their father.”

  556. January 14, 2009

    kersley

QOTD: “i’ve said it before and i’ll say it again: life moves pretty fast, if you don’t stop to look around once in a while, you could miss it.” (FBDO) never more true when talking about your kids. days/years go by in the blink of an eye, cherish each minute.

one other thing, don’t forget about lizzie. it is easy to do sometimes when you have a new baby around…

    congrats!

  557. January 14, 2009

    Bob Leighton

Congratulations Gary, to you and your lovely wife! Welcom to the Parent Club, I saw an earlier post that was so true. You’l be a hero beyond belief for 12-13 years or so then condemnation to village idiotdom. I understand they come back to believing in us again around 24-25. god Bless em, I wouldn’t trade for anything. I understand in order to have Good kids, love their Mother. Seems to work for me.

Wonderful news! Congratulations to you and your family!

    Vinophile

Congratulations Gary, Lizzy, and Baby Vay (who will surely grow to realize how amazing his/her parents are…that will take awhile, but it will happen)!!

You said it…that your life is about to change dramatically. Today, you can only wonder what that really means. In a few short months, you will know a love so overwhelming that it hurts. You will be stunned at its power over you. That love will consume you for the rest of your life. You’ve participated in the miracle of life and it is REAL! That knowledge is mind-blowing (just ask my 51-year-old brother, who has turned into a blubbering man-child since the birth of his firstborn just two yars ago)!

Advice? Just be you…it is very obvious to Vayniacs like me that you have life’s priorities in proper order. Enjoy the roller coaster and cherish every moment of the ride. Life is about to get way MORE passionate!

  562. January 14, 2009

    David Dadekian

QOTD: HAVE FUN! It’s not always easy, sometimes it’s just plain f-ing hard, but it’s always great. You may have to cut back a little bit on Gary, but I don’t think you’d have that problem for family. Have a lot of fun is my advice. Congratulations, Gary.

Congrats Gary, that is SUCH great news!!! My wife and I are expecting baby #2 in August. It is such an amazing experience, I’m sure you’ll be a great dad. The best advice I can give you is miss as little as possible (I’ve been spoiled working from home but they still grow up so fast!), and be sure to give Lizzy a break whenever you can (you can go a little stir crazy from constant baby care, especially if the baby’s having a hard time, giving eachother breaks will help reduce the stress some). Have fun!!!

    Hey Gary,

Fantastic news and congratulations to you and Lizzie both! QOTD – As one without children I can’t “give you advice” but as an active uncle I can certainly let you know that having plenty of family nearby is a real blessing (as you and your family are so close already I’m certain you know this)!

Will you be setting aside any special wines for your child’s future Birthday celebration. I’ve heard you mention folks who purchase a special wine to unveil at their child’s 21st (or later) Birthday celebration as an “Event Anniversary” bottle.

  571. January 14, 2009

    jjmabaseb

    Huge congrats to you.

QOTD: Not a parent, but I do know that probably the single biggest thing that I remember from growing up was always hearing my dad cheering at every single baseball game I played in. He is a very busy and successful lawyer, but always made sure he was a dad first.

  572. January 14, 2009

    Phil M.

CONGRATULATIONS Gary! That is outstanding. It’s what life is all about!!! My son, Jack, was born 4 years ago and I can tell you it is the most amazing journey you will ever have. As many have told you, you will hear many things from many people and some of it will scare you, but, I believe some people are just naturals when it comes to raising a loving family, and I have no doubt that you are one of those. You will love it. You will be in the middle of some important meeting at work and cry over something cute your kid said. Trust me, when you hear that very first “I wuv you daddy”, it is the best moment of your life. I only wish I could witness you getting a sniffy sniff of the diapers…”I am getting some strained prune action, which I am enjoying. I also get, like a mashed pea herbasioius thing that I find fascinating. But suprisingly, not a lot of poop on this nose. Mott, what do you think”

Good luck to you and Lizzy. She is the boss and deserves mad respect!

  575. January 14, 2009

    Karl Laczko

Gary, I am so happy for you & Liz, congratulations!

QOTD – just remember as you pass through the crying, nappy-soiling, bed-wetting, disease introductions & toddler-tantrums that they turn into pleasant little humans for a few years, and then once they turn 11 or 12….. on second thoughts just enjoy what you have now, you’ll find out the rest soon enough!

  576. January 14, 2009

    QOTD: BIG UPS GV!!!!!!!!

I’m a single dad of 3 kids, and the best advice i can give you is not to listen to advice from anyone– Just trust your own feelings and use common sense. Plus, this is just your starter kid, you’re allowed to screw this one up and keep tryin’ till you get it right!! :-)

  577. January 14, 2009

Congratulations Gary! As a mother of 4 and a grandmother of 9, I don’t think you need any advice as I know you will do a great job. I do think I could have worried less as they were growing up–they all turned out great even though there were times I didn’t think that would ever happen! Just take the long view.

And can we soon expect schwag baby bottles that read ‘Give it a Whirl’?

qotd:I ‘only’ have a 2.5 year old goddaughter but here’s some advice anyway. Don’t try extra hard to be their friend, don’t force them to be yours. Be yourself and if they want to be your friend, they will. And it will be amazing.

Congrats on the BIG news. What a wonderful change is about to come into your life. There is nothing better than becoming a parent. My wife and I have 6, they’re all adults now. We are waiting for our first grandchild.

Love CDRs. The La Cattura sounds interesting and My wife would love the gingerbread man component, unfortunately its sold out.

QOTD: As it has been said before enjoy all the facets of baby care, projectile vomiting, diaper changing, etc. There is nothing to compare to the love a baby will add to your life.

Came looking for Wednesday’s show, but it doesn’t look like we are having one. Oh well. Congrats on the wonderful news.

One other little bit of advice – - you can probably get away with saying that you and Lizzie are pregnant right now, but as she gets a little further along you may want to change it to, “Lizzie and I are expecting.”

You’ll be able to share in the birth of your child, my friend, but I don’t think you really want to be claiming that you shared the pregnancy.

Like another commenter, I”d love to know what 2009 wine you are going to put away for your child’s 21st birthday.

Congrats Gary!!! You are going to be a great dad….

Congrats! The thing about kids, you grow to love then and then you grow to know it’s time for them to leave. smile. Will baby Vaynerchuk be doing a bottle tasting show?

Very good show. nice to hear about the backgrounds, though never can find MOST of your wines here in NC! I do love Super Tuscans a lot.

QOTD: One advice: talk to them, give them your thoughts and values, don’t let them find it themselves. Take them occasionally with you, each saturday I took one kid with me for most of the day. So matter what I was doing – working, gardening, volunteering, etc. That way they have a piece of you in their heart and spirit. Best wishes to Lizzy as she raises you and the child.

    Purple Toothed Bandit

Congrats Gary! There must be nothing like the feeling of achieving the top survival goal of any living organism…. reproduction! I don’t have kids myself but am the youngest from a family of 7 with many nieces and nephews to look after. The greatest advice from my observations has to do with developing their palates! Two of my nephews were raised with the daily choice of what they wanted for dinner. If my sister was making something the kids thought they didn’t want, they would hold out ’til she would make them something else “just so they would eat”! As a result these kids are now 10 and 6 and are scared to try anything new!! Do yourself and their palates a favor and keep them on your eating schedule… If they don’t want to eat it they must not be hungry! This was how all 7 of us were raised without a question about it and we are all unspoken gastronomists with 1 somewhat renowned chef among us! Cheers!

Thanks for show and congrats…..I respect how long you took to make the Big A…

QOTD: Good question of the day..as kids dont come with manuals…that would be great though. The best advice I can give would be…
    1)Follow your instincts
    2) Get a Doula for labor support.
    3) Stay off the internet if your child is sick, not feeling well or you are just “unsure” of anything.
4)Let your child be your star but don’t put them on stage. They will be perfectly imperfect and uniquely them.
5)EDUCATION EDUCATION EDUCATION our world needs these babies.

    CONGRATULATIONS MR. soon-to-be-dad

My pieces of advise (being a dad of 3 kids) :

Take time for your kids… play with them – talk with them – ask for their advise – at 4-5 years they are already pretty clever.

And be aware that you in future will have to share the wines you drink with your kids.
My son of 2 always wants to taste whatever I’m having (white, red, portwine, beer)

    – and my daughter of 5 has a huge favorite – German RIESLING (dry and sweet)

    All the best

CONGRATULATIONS!!! That’s a huge deal. My girlfriend and I sometimes feel like taking the plunge, but I figure it would be a good idea to get at least one graduate degree and start a business before delving into that territory. You’re a braver man than I, but maybe I’ll grow some balls before the time arrives.

QOTD: I may not be a parent, but having been the recipient of various efforts at child-rearing (and having helped to raise a couple of brothers), I feel qualified to offer advice that I hope will prove helpful: Rather than trying to overtly shape your child, concentrate instead on what you can learn from him or her. Paradoxically, you may find that this inspires a sense of wonder and curiosity in the child that enables the little miracle to learn more easily than if you tried to teach more directly. In a way it seems ludicrous for parents, with all of the “rules” and habits they’ve learned over their lifetimes, to try to impose their own limitations on their children (who are comparably limitless). I typically think that children are wiser than their parents, though in different ways of course. The trick for the parents is to recognize in their children some of the wisdom they have themselves lost over the years. It’s not necessarily important to find it, but to be looking for it. Please pardon me for being preachy. In all honesty, I think you will be a fantastic father. It’s just that I am commonly discouraged at the sight of parents who unwittingly undermine the dynamic spirits of their children (and I think it is easy to fall into that trap when your life is transformed so suddenly). I wish you and Lizzie the very best.

On a side note, I will be leaving Nevada and moving to a state that accepts shipping from WineLibrary after my next semester is completed. I can hardly wait.

    All the best,
    Will

I believe that congratulations are in order – ?????????? ???! I wish you the best in this endeavor; not that you need it – I can’t imagine you being anything less than a spectacular father.

QOTD: Despite being secluded to the CKC, I would say that the best thing you could do for you kids is to be supportive in their exploits. Help them to do whatever brings THUNDER to their world – if only everyone did what made them happy for a living, and didn’t try to make a living to be happy.

    WineWoman

Gary and Lizzy, CONGRATULATIONS on the Fantastic News!! I know you will be great parents, but the number 1 piece of advice is to teach them R-E-S-P-E-C-T. It’s disappointing at times to see the lack of VALUES, some people have today, but I’m certain your children won’t fall in that category.

Too bad the Terradalgo wine wasn’t available when you had the Gingerbread House Tasting. At least the “rabbit” wine made an appearance for the “pregnant” episode.

  653. January 15, 2009

QOTD – My one piece of advice for a new parent is to enjoy life. Kids can present you with a myriad of different stresses. Take time to enjoy your kids. They are only kids once. Show them everything. Take them to the zoo, the aquarium, the movies, the theatre, etc. They will hold onto those memories and you will get to witness the world through their eyes. I highly reccomend you watch “The Last Lecture” by Randy Pausch (http://cellarmuse.blogspot.com/2008/08/last-lecture.html) – A MUST SEE

  656. January 15, 2009

    Congrats Gary V!!!

QOTD – Try to slow things down and enjoy every moment. As the father of a 3.5 year old and a 15 month toddler – life is whizzing by and it is scary how quickly it goes. You will LOVE it and I wish you and your wife the best!

a million congrats Gary V and Lizzie!!!
QOTD: Be prepared to experience feelings that you can’t fathom when you first lay eyes on that miracle!!!

    damon aka unknownwine

Yeah!! Hope you’re still reading these.

Many times I thought this announcement was coming.

My one piece of advice is to keep your marriage a priority while raising your child. It will take more work than ever before. Kids learn a great deal by how their parents relate to one another. It is the first model for relationships that they see.

I have 2 adopted kids 2 and 3.5 and have never been more fulfilled. I’m exhausted, but fulfilled. I am a stay at home dad while trying to keep my own business afloat.

All the best. From what I’ve seen, you will be a great dad.

  663. January 15, 2009

    Joedy Z

    Congrats Gary -

My advice as a parent of 3 great kids…. Be consistent and do what you say you will do. That applies to everything from how you discipline to how your family has fun. And secondly, don’t count to three, it just gives them 2 seconds longer to deliberately disobey you :-)

  664. January 15, 2009

That’s awesome! Ours is now 7 months and is both a handful and a joy. Your life is about to change for the better. Give your wife lots of support and accept the fact that she might go a bit ‘crazy’ for a while. :) Spend as much time as possible with her and the little’ un. Good luck!

    Congrats Gary! Huge news!

I spoke to some of the wine library staff today about an order I have in place- I’m planning a blind tasting of pure unblended varietals to expand (and my friends’) palettes. Had a blast picking out wines on the wine library website. The staff was friendly and helpful, too. Can’t wait!

You may never read this one Gary, but if you do…please read my comments on episode #605. Enough said….I don’t know how I do it.

We wish you and Lizzy all the best.

QOTD: My advice as a father of two is to first, get the most comfortable rocking chair money can buy and put it in the nursery. Second, photograph and videotape everything, and lastly always spend some private time (at least 20 minutes) with the little one every day you can.

  679. January 15, 2009

    JKIRBY

Congratulations! You will soon find out that being a parent is the most rewarding job ever.

QOTD: Enjoy every single second (even when he/she is up at all hours of the night) because they grow up too quickly! You will blink your eyes and your kid will be walking. Children are what life is all about!

  680. January 15, 2009

    Peter

Congratulations, Gary! Great news. Do you know you tipped us off in the previous episode? When you said something about Lizzie not wanting you to bring any colds home, I was wondering if that meant she was pregnant. All the best!

  681. January 15, 2009

    jeffe

Peter, I was thinking the exact same thing.
And I couldn’t be happier that we were both right.
Except maybe if it’s twins. Then Gary could groom them to become the next great tag team — the Killer Vees.

Gary, congratulations. It couldn’t have happened to a better guy. And an even better girl.

    Darren

A huge congratulations to you and your wife! I am the very proud father of an 18 month old, and expecting our 2nd in early April.

QOTD: 1)Make sure you pick a name you love because once they start moving, and getting into stuff, your going to be saying it 100 times a day.
2)Don’t worry about when they will start walking and talking, cause as soon as they are you, you will want them to please sit down and be quiet.

  684. January 16, 2009

    mark thomasseau

    Wonderful news – Congratulations!
My only advice – just enjoy it! It goes by much too quickly!

    nnothing

Congratulations Gary. Your enthusiasm for trying new things, not settling for the same old mediocrity, and desire to spread this message to as many people as you can, not to mention your strong connection to your family, will undoubtedly make you a great father. I couldn’t be happier for you and Lizzie. Plus May 31 would be an awesome birthday right between me (May 29) and my roommate (June 1). Geminis Rock!! heh

  687. January 16, 2009

    Eric

Congrats Gary and Lizzie! Here’s hoping the young Vaynerbuck loves the dirty Jerz as much as we do.

  688. January 16, 2009

    Jayhitek

Congratulations! But Gary you wont look good pregnant.. Puffy face and all.
Those due dates are pretty accurate. My first was due on May 29 and popped on June 3rd. Then my second was due and June 3rd and popped on June 6.
Blows you mind when they tell you it’s really 10 months and not 9.. Don’t it.

QOTD: If the baby is having a tough time with something, just remember that every three weeks it will change. Not sleeping, not taking the binky, not eating, crying a lot; whatever it is.. 3 weeks, it will change.

Oh and if Lizzy successfully breast feeds.. her body will snap back to action withing weeks. Just like that. Pow!

  689. January 16, 2009

    Congratulations!

My advice–sleep and sleep often while you still can. Also, when the time comes, “Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Baby” by Marc Weissbluth. It really helped us establish a routine, and our toddler is a great sleeper because of it.

Congratulations to you, Lizzie and your entire family. Not that’s bringing some thunder.

Great show, I’m very interested in trying Castellani La Catura.

    QOTD: Some things to consider,
This is one of those moments when you realize you have arrived in life. What you now know scientifically to be the center of the universe will change come May.
If you don’t have a tradition already, maybe something your dad or grandparents introduced, create one. Even simple things like “Abrazo de Oso” (Bear hugs) can become legacy.

I’m just catching up on episodes after several weeks away from WLTV. WOW!!!!

This is, indeed, a HUGE announcement. Carla and I are so happy for you! We wish Lizzy the best of health throughout the pregnancy. My son turns 14 this year, and it is not cliche that time flies.

Best wishes and all the best!

Oh, QOTD: Never be in a rush for your child to move from one stage to another (crawling to walking, babbling to talking). Enjoy and treasure each phase of his/her life…that’s where the memories come from.

  701. January 17, 2009

    Big Congrats Gary!

Normally watch you on iTunes, but had to drop by and comment on your huge announcement.

Love the show. Traveled to Brazil recently and finally got caught up watching the Podcasts on my iPhone. Freed up about 3.5G.

Congrats GV! It is a wonderful journey that I have experienced 4 times with my wife.

QOTD – Love unconditionally, do not smother. Remember – your greatest gift to your children are the values you pass on to them.

First of all, sorry for being so late in the comments – just catching up on some episodes this afternoon. 2nd, a huge congrats to you & your wife. You will be a great Dad I am sure – if you bring the same enthusiasm to parenting as your show

    QOTD:
    1) Never wake a sleeping baby
    2) Dont sweat the little stuff; give your kids a solid foundation of principles early & the rest will take care of itself.

Now, our question for you – what bottle or bottles are you going to put away in the cellar for 2030 (when your child turns 21) – do a show on it – taste some candidates. We would all be interested to know.

GARY!! CONGRATULATIONS MAN! I am so sorry that it took me this long to comment on this HUGE announcement, but I am absolutely thrilled for you and Lizzy. Truly. I know this will be the most significant changes of your life, and with your strong family values I know you’re naturally cut out to be a great father. I have no personal advice to offer, but as a son among four siblings, I can tell you that as long as you love, respect, and support, and loosely guide your child, then he or she will make responsible choices and find their own path. Cheers.

Well done GV you and your wife are in for a hell of a ride!!!

QOTD: 1 Breast feed it’s the best start you can give them.
2 Make sure you both get time to yourself (you’ll need it for sanity)
3 Read to your kids everyday.
4 Kids need routine (for their sanity)
    5 Create memories
6 Just let them be kids don’t make them grow up to quickly.
    7 Have fun !!!!!!!

QOTD: Say what you mean, and mean what you say. Hold them close, but give them some space. Read to them, early on, and keep it up. Let them read to you as well. Expose them to a variety of activities, and let them choose. Don’t fill their day with organized activities, though. Love them and tell them you do, often. Wish you both the best!

Congrats GaryV! I have two young boys… this will be better than any of your other successes!

QOTD: Could say all kind of mushy stuff, but I’m sure that’s covered. Take a crap-load of short movie clips of candid situations with your kid. (Most people take the photos or “event” videos already) But those candid shots of your kid just saying what’s on their mind are 10000x cooler even just 6-months from then. They change so much and sometimes you forget they have until you look back.

Hey Gary, Congratulations! I’ve been busy, and I’m trying to catch up watching the episodes. However, as a psychologist who has worked with children and adolescents, my answer to your QOTD comes in three words: Loving, Reliable, and Consistent. If you strive to have these three qualities with your children, you are on the right path.
